Early results on the plasma deposition of dielectric thin films on acoustic wave (AW) activated substrates revealed a densification pattern arisen from the focusing of plasma ions and their impact on specific areas of the piezoelectric substrate. Herein, we extend this methodology to tailor the plasma deposition of metals onto AW-activated LiNbO3 piezoelectric substrates. Our investigation reveals the tracking of the initial stages of nanoparticle (NP) formation and growth during the submonolayer deposition of silver. We elucidate the specific role of AW activation in reducing particle size, enhancing particle circularity, and retarding NP agglomeration and account for the physical phenomena making these processes differ from those occurring on non-activated substrates. We provide a comparative analysis of the results obtained under two representative plasma conditions: diode DC sputtering and magnetron sputtering. In the latter case, the AW activation gives rise to a 2D pattern of domains with different amounts of silver and a distinct size and circularity for the silver NPs. This difference was attributed to the specific characteristics of the plasma sheath formed onto the substrate in each case. Microacoustic wave devices are essential components in the RF electronics and MEMS industry with increasing impact in various sensing and actuation applications. Reliable and smart operation of acoustic wave devices at low costs would cause a crucial advancement. Herein, we present the enablement of temperature and mechanical sensing capabilities in a Rayleigh-mode standing surface acoustic wave (sSAW) chip device by harnessing an acoustic shear plate wave mode using the same set of electrodes. Most importantly, this mode is excited by switching the polarity of the sSAW transducer electrodes by simple electronics, allowing for direct and inexpensive compatibility with an existing setup. We validated the method in the emergent topic of surface de-icing by continuously monitoring temperature and water liquid-solid phase changes using the plate wave mode, and on-demand Rayleigh-wave deicing with a negligible energy cost. The flexibility for adapting the system to different scenarios, loads and scalability opens the path to impact in lab-on-a-chip, IoT technology, and sectors requiring autonomous acoustic wave actuators., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Within these studies, atomic scale molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to analyze the behavior of water droplets and ice clusters on hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces subjected to high-frequency vibrations. The methodology applied herewith aimed at understanding the phenomena governing the anti-icing and de-icing process enabled by Surface Acoustic Waves (SAWs). The complex wave propagation was simplified by in-plane and out-of-plane substrate vibrations, which are relevant to individual longitudinal and transverse components of SAWs. Since the efficiency of such an active system depends on the energy transfer from the vibrating substrate to water or ice, the agents influencing such transfer as well as the accompanied phenomena were studied in detail. Apart from the polarization of the substrate vibrations (in-plane/out-of-plane), the amplitude and frequency of these vibrations were analyzed through atomic scale modeling. Further, the surface wettability effect was introduced as a critical factor within the simulation of water or ice sitting on the vibrating substrate. The results of these studies allow identifying the different phenomena responsible for water and ice removal from vibrating surfaces depending on the wave amplitude and frequency. The importance of substrate wetting for the ant-icing and de-icing has also been analyzed and discussed concerning the future design and optimization of SAW-based systems.

A well-established procedure for the photoelectrochemical (PEC) splitting of water relies on using porous electrodes of WO3 sensitized with BiVO4 as a visible scavenger photoanode semiconductor. In this work, we propose an evolved photoelectrode fabricated by a soft-template approach consisting of supported multishell nanotubes (NTs). These NTs are formed by a concentric layered structure of indium tin oxide (ITO), WO3, and BiVO4, together with a final film of cobalt phosphate (CoPi) co-catalyst. Photoelectrode manufacturing is easily implemented at large scale and combines thermal evaporation of single crystalline organic nanowires (ONWs), magnetron sputtering (for ITO and WO3), solution dripping, and electrochemical deposition processes (for BiVO4 and CoPi, respectively) plus annealing under mild conditions. The obtained NT electrodes depict a large electrochemically active surface and outperform by more than one order of magnitude the efficiency of equivalent planar-layered electrodes. A thorough electrochemical analysis of the electrodes under blue and solar light illumination demonstrates the critical role of the WO3/BiVO4 Schottky barrier heterojunction in the control of the NT electrode efficiency and its dependence on the BiVO4 outer layer thickness. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance was maximized with the CoPi electrocatalyst, rendering high photocurrents under one sun illumination. Migrating active deicing capabilities to transparent materials with low thermal conductivity has a high potential to improve the operations of several seminal industries in the automotive, robotic, energy, and aerospace sectors. However, the development of efficient and environmentally friendly deicing methods is yet in its infancy regarding their compatibility with end-user surfaces at relevant scales and real-world operations. Herein, we approach deicing through nanoscale surface activation enabled by surface acoustic waves (SAWs), allowing efficient on-demand deicing of surface areas spanning several square centimeters covered with thick layers of glace ice. We contemplate SAW-based deicing from a twofold perspective: First, we demonstrate its functionality both with a bulk piezoelectric material (LiNbO3) and a piezo-electric film (ZnO), the latter proving its versatile applicability to a large variety of functional materials with practical importance; second, we gain fundamental knowledge of the mechanisms responsible for efficient deicing using SAWs. In particular, we show that SAW vibrational modes easily transport energy over greater distances outside the electrode areas and efficiently melt large ice aggregates covering the materials' surfaces. In addition, the essential physics of SAW-based deicing is inferred from a carefully designed experimental and numerical study. We support our findings by providing macroscopic camera snapshots captured in situ inside a climate chamber during deicing and highly resolved laser-doppler vibrometer scans of the undisturbed wavefields at room temperature. Icing has become a hot topic both in academia and in the industry given its implications in strategic sectors such as transport, robotics, wind turbines, photovoltaics, and electricity supply. Recently proposed de-icing solutions involving the propagation of acoustic waves (AWs) at suitable substrates may open the path for a sustainable alternative to standard de-icing or anti-icing protocols. Herein we experimentally unravel some of the basic interactions that contribute to the de-icing and/or hinder the icing (ice accretion) on AW-activated substrates. The response toward icing of a model substrate system consisting of a piezoelectric LiNbO3 plate AW activated by radio-frequency (rf) signaling to planar electrodes has been characterized both at a laboratory scale and in an icing wind tunnel under forced convection conditions. Main features related to de-icing mechanisms, a decrease of ice adhesion, or the avoidance of ice accretion have been disclosed by this holistic investigation. Furthermore, additional experiments have shown that the piezoelectric substrate surfaces modified with a fluorinated ZnO thin film or a ZnO/CFx bilayer present anti-icing functionality and a synergistic response when activated with AWs. A careful analysis of the dependence of resonance frequency of the piezoelectric substrates on experimental variables such as temperature, ice formation, or wind velocity shows that this parameter can be used as an internal control procedure for real-time monitoring of icing processes onto AW-activated devices, Comment: 20 pages including Supporting Information; 8 figures in the main text

The eventual exploitation of one-dimensional nanomaterials yet needs the development of scalable, high yield, homogeneous, and environmentally friendly methods able to meet the requirements for the fabrication of under design functional nanomaterials. In this article, we demonstrate a vacuum and plasma one-reactor approach for the synthesis of the fundamental common element in solar energy and optoelectronics, i.e. the transparent conducting electrode but in the form of nanotubes and nanotrees architectures. Although the process is generic and can be used for a variety of TCOs and wide-bandgap semiconductors, we focus herein on Indium Doped Tin Oxide (ITO) as the most extended in the previous applications. This protocol combines widely applied deposition techniques such as thermal evaporation for the formation of organic nanowires serving as 1D and 3D soft templates, deposition of polycrystalline layers by magnetron sputtering, and removal of the template by simply annealing under mild vacuum conditions. The process variables are tuned to control the stoichiometry, morphology, and alignment of the ITO nanotubes and nanotrees. Four-probe characterization reveals the improved lateral connectivity of the ITO nanotrees and applied on individual nanotubes shows resistivities as low as 3.5 +/- 0.9 x 10-4 {\Omega}.cm, a value comparable to single-crystalline counterparts. The assessment of diffuse reflectance and transmittance in the UV-VIS range confirms the viability of the supported ITO nanotubes as a random optical media working as strong scattering layers. Further ability to form ITO nanotrees opens the path for practical applications as ultra-broadband absorbers in the NIR.
