We present first results on PLCK G266.6-27.3, a galaxy cluster candidate detected at a signal-to-noise ratio of 5 in the Planck All Sky survey. An XMM-Newton validation observation has allowed us to confirm that the candidate is a bona fide galaxy cluster. With these X-ray data we measure an accurate redshift, z = 0.94 +/- 0.02, and estimate the cluster mass to be M_500 = (7.8 +/- 0.8)e+14 solar masses. PLCK G266.6-27.3 is an exceptional system: its luminosity of L_X(0.5-2.0 keV)=(1.4 +/- 0.05)e+45 erg/s, equals that of the two most luminous known clusters in the z > 0.5 universe, and it is one of the most massive clusters at z~1. Moreover, unlike the majority of high-redshift clusters, PLCK G266.6-27.3 appears to be highly relaxed. The 10th recorded outburst of the recurrent eclipsing nova USco was observed simultaneously in X-ray, UV, and optical by XMM-Newton on days 22.9 and 34.9 after outburst. Two full passages of the companion in front of the nova ejecta were observed, witnessing the reformation of the accretion disk. On day 22.9, we observed smooth eclipses in UV and optical but deep dips in the X-ray light curve which disappeared by day 34.9, then yielding clean eclipses in all bands. X-ray dips can be caused by clumpy absorbing material that intersects the line of sight while moving along highly elliptical trajectories. Cold material from the companion could explain the absence of dips in UV and optical light. The disappearance of X-ray dips before day 34.9 implies significant progress in the formation of the disk. The X-ray spectra contain photospheric continuum emission plus strong emission lines, but no clear absorption lines. Both continuum and emission lines in the X-ray spectra indicate a temperature increase from day 22.9 to day 34.9. We find clear evidence in the spectra and light curves for Thompson scattering of the photospheric emission from the white dwarf. Photospheric absorption lines can be smeared out during scattering in a plasma of fast electrons. We also find spectral signatures of resonant line scattering that lead to the observation of the strong emission lines. We present the first all-sky sample of galaxy clusters detected blindly by the Planck satellite through the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect from its six highest frequencies. This early SZ (ESZ) sample is comprised of 189 candidates, which have a high signal-to-noise ratio ranging from 6 to 29. Its high reliability (purity above 95%) is further ensured by an extensive validation process based on Planck internal quality assessments and by external cross-identification and follow-up observations. Planck provides the first measured SZ signal for about 80% of the 169 previously-known ESZ clusters. Planck furthermore releases 30 new cluster candidates, amongst which 20 meet the ESZ signal-to-noise selection criterion. At the submission date, twelve of the 20 ESZ candidates were confirmed as new clusters, with eleven confirmed using XMM-Newton snapshot observations, most of them with disturbed morphologies and low luminosities. The ESZ clusters are mostly at moderate redshifts (86% with z below 0.3) and span more than a decade in mass, up to the rarest and most massive clusters with masses above 10^15 Msol., Comment: Accepted for publication in a special issue of A&A, 26 pages, this paper is part of a package of papers describing first results of the Planck mission

AG Draconis produces a strong supersoft X-ray emission.The X-ray and optical/UV fluxes are in a strict anticorrelation throughout the active and quiescent phases. The aim of this contribution is to identify the source of the X-ray emission and reveal the nature of the observed flux anticorrelation. For this purpose we model the X-ray and UV observations with XMM-Newton, far-UV spectroscopy from FUSE, low- and high-resolution IUE spectra and optical/near-IR spectroscopic and/or photometric observations. Our analysis showed that the supersoft X-ray emission is produced by the white dwarf photosphere. The X-ray and far-UV fluxes make it possible to determine its temperature unambiguously. The supersoft X-ray--optical/UV flux anticorrelation is caused by the variable wind from the hot star. The enhanced hot star wind gives rise to the optical bursts by reprocessing high-energy photons from the Lyman continuum to the optical/UV., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables. By various methods, we obtained L$_{disk}$ $\sim$ 70 L$_{\odot}$ and $\dot{M}$ $\sim$1.1 $\times$ 10$^{-8}$ M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$. These values were about twice as high in the pre-1966-outburst epoch. This allowed the first direct estimate of the total mass accreted before outburst, M$_{accr}$=$\dot{M}_{pre-OB}$ $\cdot \Delta$t, and its comparison with the critical ignition mass M$_{ign}$. We found M$_{accr}$ and M$_{ign}$ to be in perfect agreement (with a value close to 5 $\times$ 10$^{-7}$M$_{\odot}$) for M$_1$ $\sim$ 1.37 M$_{\odot}$, which provides a confirmation of the thermonuclear runaway theory. The comparison of the observed parameters of the eruption phase, with the corresponding values in the grid of models by Yaron and collaborators, provides satisfactory agreement for values of M$_1$ close to 1.35 M$_{\odot}$ and log$\dot{M}$ between -8.0 and -7.0, but the observed value of the decay time t$_3$ is higher than expected. The long duration of the optically thick phase during the recorded outbursts of T Pyx, a spectroscopic behavior typical of classical novae, and the persistence of P Cyg profiles, constrains the ejected mass M$_{ign}$ to within 10$^{-5}$ - 10$^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$. Therefore, T Pyx ejects far more material than it has accreted, and the mass of the white dwarf will not increase to the Chandrasekhar limit as generally believed in recurrent novae. A detailed study based on the UV data excludes the possibility that T Pyx belongs to the class of the supersoft X-ray sources, as has been postulated. XMM-NEWTON observations have revealed a weak, hard source and confirmed this interpretation.

The phase of Super-Soft-Source (SSS) emission of the sixth recorded outburst of the recurrent nova RS Oph was observed twice with Chandra and once with XMM-Newton. The observations were taken on days 39.7, 54.0, and 66.9 after outburst. We confirm a 35-sec period on day 54.0 and found that it originates from the SSS emission and not from the shock. We discus the bound-free absorption by neutral elements in the line of sight, resonance absorption lines plus self-absorbed emission line components, collisionally excited emission lines from the shock, He-like intersystem lines, and spectral changes during an episode of high-amplitude variability. We find a decrease of the oxygen K-shell absorption edge that can be explained by photoionization of oxygen. The absorption component has average velocities of -1286+-267 km/s on day 39.7 and of -771+-65 km/s on day 66.9. The wavelengths of the emission line components are consistent with their rest wavelengths as confirmed by measurements of non-self absorbed He-like intersystem lines. We have evidence that these lines originate from the shock rather than the outer layers of the outflow and may be photoexcited in addition to collisional excitations. We found collisionally excited emission lines that are fading at wavelengths shorter than 15A that originate from the radiatively cooling shock. On day 39.5 we find a systematic blue shift of -526+-114 km/s from these lines. We found anomalous He-like f/i ratios which indicates either high densities or significant UV radiation near the plasma where the emission lines are formed. During the phase of strong variability the spectral hardness light curve overlies the total light curve when shifted by 1000sec. This can be explained by photoionization of neutral oxygen in the line of sight if the densities of order 10^{10}-10^{11} cm^{-3}., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables. The classical nova V4743 Sgr was observed with XMM-Newton for about 10 hours on April 4 2003, 6.5 months after optical maximum. At this time, this nova had become the brightest supersoft X-ray source ever observed. We present the results of a time series analysis performed on the X-ray light curve obtained in this observation, and in a previous shorter observation done with Chandra 16 days earlier. Intense variability, with amplitude as large as 40% of the total flux, was observed both times. Similarities can be found between the two observations in the structure of the variations. Most of the variability is well represented as a combination of oscillations at a set of discrete frequencies lower than 1.7 mHz. At least five frequencies are constant over the 16 day time interval between the two observations. We suggest that a periods in the power spectrum of both light curves at the frequency of 0.75 mHz and its first harmonic are related to the spin period of the white dwarf in the system, and that other observed frequencies are signatures of nonradial white dwarf pulsations. A possible signal with a 24000 sec period is also found in the XMM-Newton light curve: a cycle and a half are clearly identified. This period is consistent with the 24278 s periodicity discovered in the optical light curve of the source and thought to be the orbital period of the nova binary system., Comment: In press in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We have carried out a detailed analysis of the IUE archival high resolution spectra of the classical nova V1974 Cyg 1992. In addition to the P Cygni and emission lines, two shortward shifted absorption systems are present. Evidence is given that these absorptions originate in two separate expanding shells, outside the wind layers where the emission lines are formed. The outer main shell, containing most of the matter ejected at outburst, produces the so-called ``principal absorption line system'', and the inner faster moving second shell produces the so-called ``diffuse--enhanced absorption line system''. The outflow velocity of the two shells increases exponentially with time reaching a value of about 1750 km/s and 2900 km/s, respectively. We suggest that the acceleration of the shells is the result of increasing line-radiation pressure due to the UV-brightening of the star as the effective radius decreases. Around day 60 the second shell has overtaken the slower moving principal system shell, and merged with it. This explains: the sudden disappearance of the diffuse line system near that date, the upward jump of 240 km/s in velocity of the principal system and the first detection of hard X-ray emission on day 63. This velocity jump indicates that the main shell is about 4 times more massive than the second shell. The deceleration suffered by the diffuse-enhanced system after the shock provides a shock temperature of about 1.6 KeV, in fairly good agreement with the temperature of the observed hard X-ray emission., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

On 2003 September 17 INTEGRAL discovered a bright transient source 3 degrees from the Galactic Center, IGR J17544-2619. The field containing the transient was observed by XMM-Newton on 2003 March 17 and September 11 and 17. A bright source, at a position consistent with the INTEGRAL location, was detected by the European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) during both September observations with mean 0.5-10 keV unabsorbed luminosities of 1.1x10^35 and 5.7x10^35 erg s-1 for an (assumed) distance of 8 kpc. The source was not detected in 2003 March, with a 0.5-10 keV luminosity of < 3.8x10^32 erg s-1. The September 11 and 17 EPIC spectra can be represented by a power-law model with photon indices of 2.25+/-0.15 and 1.42+/-0.17, respectively. Thus, the 0.5-10 keV spectrum hardens with increasing intensity. The low-energy absorption during both September observations is comparable to the interstellar value. This paper deals with the definition of the input fluxes used for the calibration of the IUE Final Archive. The method adopted consists on the determination of the shape of the detector's sensitivity curves using IUE low resolution observations with model fluxes of the DA white dwarf G191-B2B. A scale factor was then determined so that the IUE observations of some bright OAO-2 standards match the original measurements from Meade (1978) in the spectral region 2100-2300 A. The ultraviolet fluxes of six standard stars used as input for the Final Archive photometric calibration together with the model fluxes of G191-B2B normalized to the OAO-2 scale are given. A comparison with the independent FOS calibration shows that the IUE flux scale for the Ultraviolet is 7.2% lower. We consider this mainly to be caused by the different normalization procedures. This paper discusses the overall quality of IUE high resolution data processed with the NEWSIPS software in terms of flux and wavelength accuracy. It also describes the processing of NEWSIPS high resolution spectra within the framework of the ESA ``IUE Newly Extracted Spectra'' (INES) System. This system provides the IUE high resolution data in two formats: the high resolution ``concatenated'' spectra, in which the spectral orders are connected, eliminating the overlap regions through a procedure designed to optimize the signal-to-noise ratio at the edges of the orders, and the ``rebinned'' spectra, i.e. the high resolution concatenated spectra resampled into the low resolution wavelength domain. Our study reveals the existence of a significant discrepancy in the wavelength scales of short and long wavelength NEWSIPS high resolution spectra. The INES processing applies a correction of +17.7 km/s to the wavelength scale of the high resolution SWP spectra in order to provide an internally consistent velocity scale. Similarly, suitable corrections have been applied to long wavelength small aperture spectra. In this paper we document the results of the study which led to the ripple correction and absolute calibration algorithms applied to the high resolution spectra processed with the NEWSIPS software for the Final Archive of the IUE Project. In this analysis, based on a very large number of spectra, we find that both K and the alpha parameters (not only the former as previously believed) vary with order number. This fact, together with the finding that the central peaks of the blaze function vary also as a function of the THDA temperature (for the SWP camera) and of the date of observations (for the LWP and LWR cameras), makes the ripple correction algorithm more complex than previously considered but, at the same time, considerably more reliable. As for the high resolution absolute calibration, the method followed is similar to the one implemented in IUESIPS. The internal accuracy of the high resolution calibration is about 4%. We present the extraction and processing of the IUE Low Dispersion spectra within the framework of the ESA ``IUE Newly Extracted Spectra'' (INES) System. Weak points of SWET, the optimal extraction implementation to produce the NEWSIPS output products (extracted spectra) are discussed, and the procedures implemented in INES to solve these problems are outlined. The more relevant modifications are: 1) the use of a new noise model, 2) a more accurate representation of the spatial profile of the spectrum and 3) a more reliable determination of the background. The INES extraction also includes a correction for the contamination by solar light in long wavelength spectra. Examples showing the improvements obtained in INES with respect to SWET are described. Finally, the linearity and repeatability characteristics of INES data are evaluated and the validity of the errors provided in the extraction is discussed., Comment: 15 pages, 18 figures, accepted for A&ASS

We have observed V751 Cyg with the ROSAT HRI during its recent optical low state and clearly detect it at a count rate of 0.015 cts/s. The X-ray intensity is a factor of ~20 higher than the upper limit obtained with the ROSAT PSPC during the optical high state. Spectral investigations suggest a very soft X-ray spectrum. We investigate archival IUE data of V751 Cyg and derive a distance of V751 Cyg of d~500 pc based on the extinction estimate of E(B-V)=0.25+-0.05. This implies that the X-ray emission is very luminous, on the order of 10^34-10^36 erg/s. The spectrum during the optical low-state is characterized by a very blue continuum and the presence of strong emission lines of the Balmer series and HeI. Also, HeII 4686 A is clearly detected. We present the results of an extensive campaign of coordinated X-ray (ROSAT) and UV (IUE) observations of the symbiotic star AG Dra during a long period of quiescence (1990-1993) followed by two optical outbursts in 1994 and 1995. The hot component (i.e. X-ray emitting compact object) turns out to be very luminous during the quiescent phase: (9.5+/-1.5)*10^36 (D/2.5 kpc)^2 erg/s. This suggests that the compact object is burning hydrogen-rich matter on its surface even in the quiescent (as defined optically) state at a rate of (3.2+/-0.5)*10^-8 (D/2.5 kpc)^2 M_sun/yr. Assuming a steady state, i.e. burning at precisely the accretion supply rate, this high rate suggests a Roche lobe filling cool companion though Bondi-Hoyle accretion from the companion wind cannot be excluded. We have discovered a remarkable decrease of the X-ray flux during both optical maxima. In the UV these events were characterized by a large increase of the emission line and continuum fluxes. The anticorrelation of X-ray/UV flux and optical brightness evolution is very likely due to a temperature decrease of the hot component which could be the result of an increased mass transfer to the burning compact object, causing it to slowly expand to about twice its original size during each optical outburst., Comment: accepted for publ. in A&A, 17 pages incl. 5 Figs

The recent 1994-1995 active phase of AG Draconis has given us for the first time the opportunity to follow the full X-ray behaviour of a symbiotic star during two successive outbursts and to compare with its quiescence X-ray emission. With \ros observations we have discovered a remarkable decrease of the X-ray flux during both optical maxima, followed by a gradual recovering to the pre-outburst flux. In the UV the events were characterized by a large increase of the emission line and continuum fluxes, comparable to the behaviour of AG Dra during the 1980-81 active phase. The anticorrelation of X-ray/UV flux and optical brightness evolution is shown to very likely be due to a temperature decrease of the hot component.
