Embodied navigation requires robots to understand and interact with the environment based on given tasks. Vision-Language Navigation (VLN) is an embodied navigation task, where a robot navigates within a previously seen and unseen environment, based on linguistic instruction and visual inputs. VLN agents need access to both local and global action spaces; former for immediate decision making and the latter for recovering from navigational mistakes. Prior VLN agents rely only on instruction-viewpoint alignment for local and global decision making and back-track to a previously visited viewpoint, if the instruction and its current viewpoint mismatches. These methods are prone to mistakes, due to the complexity of the instruction and partial observability of the environment. We posit that, back-tracking is sub-optimal and agent that is aware of its mistakes can recover efficiently. For optimal recovery, exploration should be extended to unexplored viewpoints (or frontiers). The optimal frontier is a recently observed but unexplored viewpoint that aligns with the instruction and is novel. We introduce a memory-based and mistake-aware path planning strategy for VLN agents, called \textit{StratXplore}, that presents global and local action planning to select the optimal frontier for path correction. The proposed method collects all past actions and viewpoint features during navigation and then selects the optimal frontier suitable for recovery. Experimental results show this simple yet effective strategy improves the success rate on two VLN datasets with different task complexities.

Embodied AI aims to develop robots that can \textit{understand} and execute human language instructions, as well as communicate in natural languages. On this front, we study the task of generating highly detailed navigational instructions for the embodied robots to follow. Although recent studies have demonstrated significant leaps in the generation of step-by-step instructions from sequences of images, the generated instructions lack variety in terms of their referral to objects and landmarks. Existing speaker models learn strategies to evade the evaluation metrics and obtain higher scores even for low-quality sentences. In this work, we propose SAS (Spatially-Aware Speaker), an instruction generator or \textit{Speaker} model that utilises both structural and semantic knowledge of the environment to produce richer instructions. For training, we employ a reward learning method in an adversarial setting to avoid systematic bias introduced by language evaluation metrics. Empirically, our method outperforms existing instruction generation models, evaluated using standard metrics. Our code is available at \url{https://github.com/gmuraleekrishna/SAS}.

Design of an efficient thread-safe concurrent data structure is a balancing act between its implementation complexity and performance. Lock-based concurrent data structures, which are relatively easy to derive from their sequential counterparts and to prove thread-safe, suffer from poor throughput under even light multi-threaded workload. At the same time, lock-free concurrent structures allow for high throughput, but are notoriously difficult to get right and require careful reasoning to formally establish their correctness. We explore a solution to this conundrum based on batch parallelism, an approach for designing concurrent data structures via a simple insight: efficiently processing a batch of a priori known operations in parallel is easier than optimising performance for a stream of arbitrary asynchronous requests. Alas, batch-parallel structures have not seen wide practical adoption due to (i) the inconvenience of having to structure multi-threaded programs to explicitly group operations and (ii) the lack of a systematic methodology to implement batch-parallel structures as simply as lock-based ones. We present OBatcher-an OCaml library that streamlines the design, implementation, and usage of batch-parallel structures. It solves the first challenge (how to use) by suggesting a new lightweight implicit batching design that is built on top of generic asynchronous programming mechanisms. The second challenge (how to implement) is addressed by identifying a family of strategies for converting common sequential structures into efficient batch-parallel ones. We showcase OBatcher with a diverse set of benchmarks. Our evaluation of all the implementations on large asynchronous workloads shows that (a) they consistently outperform the corresponding coarse-grained lock-based implementations and that (b) their throughput scales reasonably with the number of processors., Comment: Extended version of the OOPSLA'24 paper

At first light, the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) near-infrared (NIR) instruments will be fed by a multiconjugate adaptive optics instrument known as the Narrow Field Infrared Adaptive Optics System (NFIRAOS). NFIRAOS will use six laser guide stars to sense atmospheric turbulence in a volume corresponding to a field of view of 2', but natural guide stars (NGSs) will be required to sense tip/tilt and focus. To achieve high sky coverage (50% at the north Galactic pole), the NFIRAOS client instruments use NIR on-instrument wavefront sensors that take advantage of the sharpening of the stars by NFIRAOS. A catalog of guide stars with NIR magnitudes as faint as 22 mag in the J band (Vega system), covering the TMT-observable sky, will be a critical resource for the efficient operation of NFIRAOS, and no such catalog currently exists. Hence, it is essential to develop such a catalog by computing the expected NIR magnitudes of stellar sources identified in deep optical sky surveys using their optical magnitudes. This paper discusses the generation of a partial NIR Guide Star Catalog (IRGSC), similar to the final IRGSC for TMT operations. The partial catalog is generated by applying stellar atmospheric models to the optical data of stellar sources from the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) optical data and then computing their expected NIR magnitudes. We validated the computed NIR magnitudes of the sources in some fields by using the available NIR data for those fields. We identified the remaining challenges of this approach. We outlined the path for producing the final IRGSC using the Pan-STARRS data. We have named the Python code to generate the IRGSC as irgsctool, which generates a list of NGS for a field using optical data from the Pan-STARRS 3pi survey and also a list of NGSs having observed NIR data from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey if they are available.

We present new near-ultraviolet (NUV, $\lambda$ = 2479 $-$ 3306 $\r{A}$) transmission spectroscopy of KELT-9b, the hottest known exoplanet, obtained with the Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment ($CUTE$) CubeSat. Two transits were observed on September 28th and September 29th 2022, referred to as Visits 1 and 2 respectively. Using a combined transit and systematics model for each visit, the best-fit broadband NUV light curves are R$_{\text{p}}$/R$_{\star}$ $=$ 0.136$_{0.0146}^{0.0125}$ for Visit 1 and R$_{\text{p}}$/R$_{\star}$ $=$ 0.111$_{0.0190}^{0.0162}$ for Visit 2, appearing an average of 1.54$\times$ larger in the NUV than at optical wavelengths. While the systematics between the two visits vary considerably, the two broadband NUV light curves are consistent with each other. A transmission spectrum with 25 $\r{A}$ bins suggests a general trend of excess absorption in the NUV, consistent with expectations for ultra-hot Jupiters. Although we see an extended atmosphere in the NUV, the reduced data lack the sensitivity to probe individual spectral lines.

Dust polarisation observations at optical wavelengths help understand the dust grain properties and trace the plane-of-the-sky component of the magnetic field. In this study, we make use of published optical polarisation data acquired with AIMPOL along with distances ($d$) and extinction ($A_{\mathrm{V}}$) data. We study the variation of polarisation efficiency ($P/A_{\mathrm{V}}$) as a function of $A_{\mathrm{V}}$ in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) and intracluster mediums (ICM) using the already published polarisation data of six clusters. Among these clusters, NGC 2281, NGC 1664, and NGC 1960 are old; while Stock 8, NGC 1931, and NGC 1893 are young. We categorize stars towards each cluster into foreground, background, and cluster members by employing two clustering algorithms GMM and DBSCAN. Thus, classified field stars and cluster members are used to reveal the polarisation properties of ISM and ICM dust, respectively. We find that the dust grains located in the diffuse ISM show higher polarisation efficiencies when compared to those located in the ICM of younger clusters., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

We present a detailed structural and gas kinematic study of the star-forming complex W5-NW. A cloud-cloud collision scenario unravels with evidences of collision induced star and cluster formation. Various signatures of cloud-cloud collision such as "complementary distribution" and "bridging-features" are explored. At the colliding region, the two clouds have complementary morphologies, where W5-NWb has a filamentary key-like shape which fits into the U-shaped cavity in W5-NWa that behaves like a keyhole. The interaction region between the two clouds is characterised by bridging features with intermediate velocities connecting the two clouds. A skewed V-shaped bridging feature is also detected at the site of collision. A robust picture of the molecular gas distribution highlighting the bridges is seen in the position-position-velocity diagram obtained using the SCOUSEPY algorithm. Star cluster formation with an over-density of Class I and Class II young stellar objects is also seen towards this cloud complex, likely triggered by the cloud collision event., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 2 appendices, Accepted for publication in AJ

Humans use their knowledge of common house layouts obtained from previous experiences to predict nearby rooms while navigating in new environments. This greatly helps them navigate previously unseen environments and locate their target room. To provide layout prior knowledge to navigational agents based on common human living spaces, we propose WIN (\textit{W}hat \textit{I}s \textit{N}ear), a commonsense learning model for Vision Language Navigation (VLN) tasks. VLN requires an agent to traverse indoor environments based on descriptive navigational instructions. Unlike existing layout learning works, WIN predicts the local neighborhood map based on prior knowledge of living spaces and current observation, operating on an imagined global map of the entire environment. The model infers neighborhood regions based on visual cues of current observations, navigational history, and layout common sense. We show that local-global planning based on locality knowledge and predicting the indoor layout allows the agent to efficiently select the appropriate action. Specifically, we devised a cross-modal transformer that utilizes this locality prior for decision-making in addition to visual inputs and instructions. Experimental results show that locality learning using WIN provides better generalizability compared to classical VLN agents in unseen environments. Our model performs favorably on standard VLN metrics, with Success Rate 68\% and Success weighted by Path Length 63\% in unseen environments.

Modern micromanipulation techniques typically involve trapping using electromagnetic, acoustic or flow fields that produce stresses on the trapped particles thereby precluding stress-free manipulations. Here, we show that by employing polyhedral symmetries in a multichannel microfluidic design, we can separate the tasks of displacing and trapping a particle into two distinct sets of flow operations, each characterized and protected by their unique groups of symmetries. By combining only the displacing uniform flow modes to entrain and move targeted particles in arbitrary directions, we were able to realize symmetry-protected, stress-free micromanipulation in 3D. Furthermore, we engineered complex, microscale paths by programming and controlling the flow within each channel in real-time, resulting in multiple particles simultaneously following desired paths in the absence of any supervision or feedback. Our work therefore provides a general symmetry-group-based framework for understanding and engineering microfluidics and a novel platform for 3D stress-free manipulations.

Intracellular transport of cargoes in the cell is essential for the organization and functioning cells, especially those that are large and elongated. The cytoskeletal networks inside large cells can be highly complex, and this cytoskeletal organization can have impacts on the distance and trajectories of travel. Here, we experimentally created microtubule networks with varying mesh sizes and examined the ability of kinesin-driven quantum dot cargoes to traverse the network. Using the experimental data, we deduced parameters for cargo detachment at intersections and away from intersections, allowing us to create an analytical theory for the run length as a function of mesh size. We also used these parameters to perform simulations of cargoes along paths extracted from the experimental networks. Atmospheric escape is a fundamental process that affects the structure, composition, and evolution of many planets. The signatures of escape are detectable on close-in, gaseous exoplanets orbiting bright stars, owing to the high levels of extreme-ultraviolet irradiation from their parent stars. The Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment (CUTE) is a CubeSat mission designed to take advantage of the near-ultraviolet stellar brightness distribution to conduct a survey of the extended atmospheres of nearby close-in planets. The CUTE payload is a magnifying NUV (2479~--~3306 Ang) spectrograph fed by a rectangular Cassegrain telescope (206mm x 84mm); the spectrogram is recorded on a back-illuminated, UV-enhanced CCD. The science payload is integrated into a 6U Blue Canyon Technology XB1 bus. CUTE was launched into a polar, low-Earth orbit on 27 September 2021 and has been conducting this transit spectroscopy survey following an on-orbit commissioning period. This paper presents the mission motivation, development path, and demonstrates the potential for small satellites to conduct this type of science by presenting initial on-orbit science observations. A common type of cytoskeletal morphology involves multiple converging microbutubules with their minus ends collected and stabilized by a microtubule organizing center (MTOC) in the interior of the cell. This arrangement enables the ballistic transport of cargo bound to microtubules, both dynein mediated transport towards the MTOC and kinesin mediated transport away from it, interspersed with diffusion for unbound cargo-motor complexes. Spatial and temporal positioning of the MTOC allows for bidirectional transport towards and away from specific organelles and locations within the cell and also the sequestering and subsequent dispersal of dynein transported cargo. The general principles governing dynamics, efficiency and tunability of such transport in the MTOC vicinity is not fully understood. To address this, we develop a one-dimensional model that includes advective transport towards an attractor (such as the MTOC), and diffusive transport that allows particles to reach absorbing boundaries (such as cellular membranes). We calculated the mean first passage time (MFPT) for cargo to reach the boundaries as a measure of the effectiveness of sequestering (large MFPT) and diffusive dispersal (low MFPT). The MFPT experiences a dramatic growth in magnitude, transitioning from a low to high MFPT regime (dispersal to sequestering) over a window of cargo attachment/detachment rates that is close to in vivo values. We find that increasing either the attachment or detachment rate, while fixing the other, can result in optimal dispersal when the attractor is placed asymmetrically. Finally, we describe a rare event regime, where the escape location is exponentially sensitive to the attractor positioning. Our results suggest that structures such as the MTOC allow for the sensitive control of the spatial and temporal features of transport and corresponding function under physiological conditions.

Molecular clouds are sites of star formation. Magnetic fields are believed to play an important role in their dynamics and shaping morphology. We aim to study any possible correlation that might exist between the magnetic fields orientation inside the clouds and the magnetic fields at envelope scales and their connection with respect to the observed morphology of the selected clouds. We examine the magnetic field orientation towards the clouds L1512, L1523, L1333, L1521E, L1544, L1517, L1780, and L183 using optical and \textit{Planck} polarization observations. We also found the correlation between the ambient magnetic field and core orientations derived using \textit{Astrodendrogram} on the \textit{Herschel} 250 $\mu$m data. We find that the magnetic fields derived from optical and \textit{Planck} agree with each other. The derived magnetic fields are aligned along the observed emission of each cloud as seen in \textit{Herschel} 250 $\mu$m data. We also find that the relative orientation between the cores and the magnetic fields is random. This lack of correlation may arise due to the fact that the core orientation could also be influenced by the different magnetization within individual clouds at higher densities or the feedback effects which may vary from cloud to cloud. The estimated magnetic field strength and the mass-to-flux ratio suggest that all the clouds are in a magnetically critical state except L1333, L1521E, and L183 where the cloud envelope could be strongly supported by the magnetic field lines., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures and 5 tables; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Cells self-organize into functional, ordered structures during tissue morphogenesis, a process that is evocative of colloidal self-assembly into engineered soft materials. Understanding how inter-cellular mechanical interactions may drive the formation of ordered and functional multicellular structures is important in developmental biology and tissue engineering. Here, by combining an agent-based model for contractile cells on elastic substrates with endothelial cell culture experiments, we show that substrate deformation-mediated mechanical interactions between cells can cluster and align them into branched networks. Motivated by the structure and function of vasculogenic networks, we predict how measures of network connectivity like percolation and fractal dimension, as well as local morphological features including junctions, branches, and rings depend on cell contractility and density, and on substrate elastic properties including stiffness and compressibility. We predict and confirm with experiments that cell network formation is substrate stiffness-dependent, being optimal at intermediate stiffness. Overall, we show that long-range, mechanical interactions provide an optimal and general strategy for multi-cellular self-organization, leading to more robust and efficient realization of space-spanning networks than through just local inter-cellular interactions., Comment: 30 pages, 22 figures

Many types of mammalian cells exert active contractile forces and mechanically deform their elastic substrate, to accomplish biological functions such as cell migration. These substrate deformations provide a mechanism by which cells can sense other cells, leading to long range mechanical intercell interactions and possible self organization. Here, we treat cells as noisy motile particles that exert contractile dipolar stresses on elastic substrates as they move. By combining this minimal model for the motility of individual cells with a linear elastic model that accounts for substrate mediated cell cell interactions, we examine emergent collective states that result from the interplay of cell motility and long range elastic dipolar interactions. In particular, we show that particles self assemble into flexible, motile chains which can cluster to form diverse larger scale compact structures with polar order. By computing key structural and dynamical metrics, we distinguish between the collective states at weak and strong elastic interactions, as well as at low and high motility. We also show how these states are affected by confinement, an important characteristic of the complex mechanical microenvironment inhabited by cells. Seamless Human-Robot Interaction is the ultimate goal of developing service robotic systems. For this, the robotic agents have to understand their surroundings to better complete a given task. Semantic scene understanding allows a robotic agent to extract semantic knowledge about the objects in the environment. In this work, we present a semantic scene understanding pipeline that fuses 2D and 3D detection branches to generate a semantic map of the environment. The 2D mask proposals from state-of-the-art 2D detectors are inverse-projected to the 3D space and combined with 3D detections from point segmentation networks. Unlike previous works that were evaluated on collected datasets, we test our pipeline on an active photo-realistic robotic environment - BenchBot. Our novelty includes rectification of 3D proposals using projected 2D detections and modality fusion based on object size. This work is done as part of the Robotic Vision Scene Understanding Challenge (RVSU). The spatial distribution of the HI gas in galaxies holds important clues on the physical processes that shape the structure and dynamics of the interstellar medium (ISM). In this work, we quantify the structure of the HI gas in a sample of 33 nearby galaxies taken from the THINGS Survey using the delta-variance spectrum. The THINGS galaxies display a large diversity in their spectra, however, there are a number of recurrent features. In many galaxies, we observe a bump in the spectrum on scales of a few to several hundred pc. We find the characteristic scales associated with the bump to be correlated with galactic SFR for values of the SFR > 0.5 M$_{sol}$ yr$^{-1}$ and also with the median size of the HI shells detected in those galaxies. On larger scales, we observe the existence of two self-similar regimes. The first one, on intermediate scales is shallow and the power law that describes this regime has an exponent in the range [0.1-1] with a mean value of 0.55 which is compatible with the density field being generated by supersonic turbulence in the cold phase of the HI gas. The second power law is steeper, with a range of exponents between [0.5-1.5] and a mean value of 1.5. These values are associated with subsonic turbulence which is characteristic of the warm phase of the HI gas. The spatial scale at which the transition between the two regimes occurs is found to be $\approx 0.5 R_{25}$ which is similar to the size of the molecular disk in the THINGS galaxies. Overall, our results suggest that on scales < $0.5 R_{25}$, the structure of the ISM is affected by the effects of supernova explosions. On larger scales (> 0.5 $R_{25}$), stellar feedback has no significant impact, and the structure of the ISM is determined by large scale processes that govern the dynamics of the gas in the warm neutral medium such as the flaring of the HI disk and the effects of ram pressure stripping., Comment: Accepted to A&A. We present the results on the physical properties of filaments and dense cores in IC 5146, as a part of the TRAO FUNS project. We carried out On-The-Fly mapping observations using the Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory (TRAO) 14m telescope covering about 1 square degree of the area of IC 5146 using various molecular lines. We identified 14 filaments (24 in total, including sub-filaments) from the C$^{18}$O (1-0) data cube and 22 dense cores from the $\rm N_{2}H^{+}$ (1-0) data. We examined the filaments' gravitational criticality, turbulence properties, accretion rate from filaments to dense cores, and relative evolutionary stages of cores. Most filaments in IC 5146 are gravitationally supercritical within the uncertainty, and most dense cores are formed in them. We found that dense cores in the hubs show a systemic velocity shift of ~0.3 km/s between the $\rm N_{2}H^{+}$ and C$^{18}$O gas. Besides, these cores are subsonic or transonic, while the surrounding filament gas is transonic or supersonic, indicating that the cores in the hubs are likely formed by the turbulence dissipation in the colliding turbulent filaments and the merging is still ongoing. We estimated the mass accretion rate of $15 - 35~M_{\odot}~\rm Myr^{-1}$ from the filaments to the dense cores, and the required time scales to collect the current core mass are consistent with the lifetime of the dense cores. Variations of transport efficiency in structured environments between distinct individuals in actively self-propelled systems is both hard to study and poorly understood. Here, we study the transport of a non-tumbling {\ecoli} strain, an active-matter archetype with intrinsic size variation but fairly uniform speed, through a periodic pillar array. We show that long-term transport switches from a trapping dominated state for shorter cells to a much more dispersive state for longer cells above a critical bacterial size set by the pillar array geometry. Using a combination of experiments and modeling, we show that this anomalous size-dependence arises from an enhancement of the escape rate from trapping for longer cells caused by nearby pillars. Our results show that geometric effects can lead to size being a sensitive tuning knob for transport in structured environments, with implications in general for active matter systems and, in particular, for the morphological adaptation of bacteria to structured habitats, spatial structuring of communities and for anti-biofouling materials design., Comment: 4 figures

Approximate Membership Query structures (AMQs) rely on randomisation for time- and space-efficiency, while introducing a possibility of false positive and false negative answers. Correctness proofs of such structures involve subtle reasoning about bounds on probabilities of getting certain outcomes. Because of these subtleties, a number of unsound arguments in such proofs have been made over the years. In this work, we address the challenge of building rigorous and reusable computer-assisted proofs about probabilistic specifications of AMQs. We describe the framework for systematic decomposition of AMQs and their properties into a series of interfaces and reusable components. We implement our framework as a library in the Coq proof assistant and showcase it by encoding in it a number of non-trivial AMQs, such as Bloom filters, counting filters, quotient filters and blocked constructions, and mechanising the proofs of their probabilistic specifications. We demonstrate how AMQs encoded in our framework guarantee the absence of false negatives by construction. We also show how the proofs about probabilities of false positives for complex AMQs can be obtained by means of verified reduction to the implementations of their simpler counterparts. Finally, we provide a library of domain-specific theorems and tactics that allow a high degree of automation in probabilistic proofs., Comment: 24 pages

The CS molecule is known to be absorbed onto dust in the cold and dense conditions, causing it to get significantly depleted in the central region of cores. This study is aimed to investigate the depletion of the CS molecule using the optically thin C$^{34}$S molecular line observations. We mapped five prestellar cores, L1544, L1552, L1689B, L694-2, and L1197 using two molecular lines, C$^{34}$S $(J=2-1)$ and N$_2$H$^+$ $(J=1-0)$ with the NRO 45-m telescope, doubling the number of cores where the CS depletion was probed using C$^{34}$S. In most of our targets, the distribution of C$^{34}$S emission shows features that suggest that the CS molecule is generally depleted in the center of the prestellar cores. The radial profile of the CS abundance with respect to H$_2$ directly measured from the CS emission and the Herschel dust emission indicates that the CS molecule is depleted by a factor of $\sim$3 toward the central regions of the cores with respect to their outer regions. The degree of the depletion is found to be even more enhanced by an order of magnitude when the contaminating effect introduced by the presence of CS molecules in the surrounding envelope that lie along the line-of-sight is removed. Except for L1197 which is classified as relatively the least evolved core in our targets based on its observed physical parameters, we found that the remaining four prestellar cores are suffering from significant CS depletion at their central region regardless of the relative difference in their evolutionary status., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

The spatial localization or sequestering of motile cargo and their dispersal within cells is an important process in a number of physiological contexts. The morphology of the cytoskeletal network, along which active, motor-driven intracellular transport takes place, plays a critical role in regulating such transport phases. Here, we use a computational model to address the existence and sensitivity of dynamic sequestering and how it depends on the parameters governing the cytoskeletal network geometry, with a focus on filament lengths and polarization away or toward the periphery. Our model of intracellular transport solves for the time evolution of a probability distribution of cargo that is transported by passive diffusion in the bulk cytoplasm and driven by motors on explicitly rendered, polar cytoskeletal filaments with random orientations. We show that depending on the lengths and polarizations of filaments in the network, dynamic sequestering regions can form in different regions of the cell. Furthermore, we find that, for certain parameters, the residence time of cargo is non-monotonic with increasing filament length, indicating an optimal regime for dynamic sequestration that is potentially tunable via filament length. Our results are consistent with {\it in vivo} observations and suggest that the ability to tunably control cargo sequestration via cytoskeletal network regulation could provide a general mechanism to regulate intracellular transport phases., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures

"TRAO FUNS" is a project to survey Gould Belt's clouds in molecular lines. This paper presents its first results on the central region of the California molecular cloud, L1478. We performed On-The-Fly mapping observations using the Taedeok Radio Astronomy Observatory (TRAO) 14m single dish telescope equipped with a 16 multi-beam array covering $\sim$1.0 square degree area of this region using C$^{18}$O (1-0) mainly tracing low density cloud and about 460 square arcminute area using N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ (1-0) mainly tracing dense cores. CS (2-1) and SO $(3_{2}-2_{1})$ were also used simultaneously to map $\sim$440 square arcminute area of this region. We identified 10 filaments by applying the dendrogram technique to the C$^{18}$O data-cube and 8 dense N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ cores by using {\sc FellWalker}. Basic physical properties of filaments such as mass, length, width, velocity field, and velocity dispersion are derived. It is found that L1478 consists of several filaments with slightly different velocities. Especially the filaments which are supercritical are found to contain dense cores detected in N$_{2}$H$^{+}$. Comparison of non-thermal velocity dispersions derived from C$^{18}$O and N$_{2}$H$^{+}$ for the filaments and dense cores indicates that some of dense cores share similar kinematics with those of the surrounding filaments while several dense cores have different kinematics with those of their filaments. The Colorado Ultraviolet Transit Experiment (CUTE) is a 6U NASA CubeSat carrying on-board a low-resolution (R~2000--3000), near-ultraviolet (2500--3300 {\AA}) spectrograph. It has a rectangular primary Cassegrain telescope to maximize the collecting area. CUTE, which is planned for launch in Spring 2020, is designed to monitor transiting extra-solar planets orbiting bright, nearby stars aiming at improving our understanding of planet atmospheric escape and star-planet interaction processes. We present here the CUTE data simulator, which we complemented with a basic data reduction pipeline. This pipeline will be then updated once the final CUTE data reduction pipeline is developed. We show here the application of the simulator to the HD209458 system and a first estimate of the precision on the measurement of the transit depth as a function of temperature and magnitude of the host star. We also present estimates of the effect of spacecraft jitter on the final spectral resolution. The simulator has been developed considering also scalability and adaptability to other missions carrying on-board a long-slit spectrograph. The data simulator will be used to inform the CUTE target selection, choose the spacecraft and instrument settings for each observation, and construct synthetic CUTE wavelength-dependent transit light curves on which to develop the CUTE data reduction pipeline., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments and Systems

We present the results of a systematic search for molecular outflows in 68 Very Low Luminosity Objects (VeLLOs) from single-dish observations in CO isotopologues which find 16 VeLLOs showing clear outflow signatures in the CO maps. With additional three VeLLOs from the literature, we analyzed the outflow properties for 19 VeLLOs, identifying 15 VeLLOs as proto-Brown Dwarf (BD) candidates and four VeLLOs as likely faint protostar candidates. The proto-BD candidates are found to have a mass accretion rate ($\sim 10^{-8} - 10^{-7}$ $\rm M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$) lower than that of the protostar candidates ($\gtrsim 10^{-6}$ $\rm M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$). Their accretion luminosities are similar to or smaller than their internal luminosities, implying that many proto-BD candidates might have had either small accretion activity in a quiescent manner throughout their lifetime, or be currently exhibiting a relatively higher (or episodic) mass accretion than the past. There are strong trends that outflows of many proto-BDs are less active if they are fainter or have less massive envelopes. The outflow forces and internal luminosities for more than half of the proto-BD candidates seem to follow an evolutionary track of a protostar with its initial envelope mass of $\sim$0.08 $\rm M_{\odot}$, indicating that some BDs may form in less massive dense cores in a way similar to normal stars. But, because there also exists a significant fraction (about 40%) of proto-BDs with much weaker outflow force than expected by the relations for protostars, we should not rule out the possibility of other formation mechanism for the BDs., Comment: 32 pages, 9 Figures, 5 Tables, Accepted for publication in ApJS

Heterogeneous growth plays an important role in the shape and pattern formation of thin elastic structures ranging from the petals of blooming lilies to the cell walls of growing bacteria. Here we address the stability and regulation of such growth, which we modeled as a quasi-static time evolution of a metric, with fast elastic relaxation of the shape. We consider regulation via coupling of the growth law, defined by the time derivative of the target metric, to purely local properties of the shape, such as the local curvature and stress. For cylindrical shells, motivated by rod-like E. \textit{coli}, we show that coupling to curvature alone is generically linearly unstable and that additionally coupling to stress can lead to stably elongating structures. Our approach can readily be extended to gain insights into the general classes of stable growth laws for different target geometries.

Spatial Heterodyne Spectroscopy (SHS) is a relatively novel interferometric technique similar to the Fourier transform spectroscopy with heritage from the Michelson Interferometer. An imaging detector is used at the output of a SHS to record the spatially-heterodyned interference pattern. The spectrum of the source is obtained by Fourier transforming the recorded interferogram. The merits of the SHS -- its design, including the absence of moving parts, compactness, high throughput, high SNR and instantaneous spectral measurements -- make it suitable for space as well as for ground observatories. The small bandwidth limitation of the SHS can be overcome by building it in tunable configuration (Tunable Spatial Heterodyne Spectrometer, TSHS). In this paper, we describe the design, development and simulation of a TSHS in refractive configuration suitable for optical wavelength regime. Here we use a beam splitter to split the incoming light compared with all--reflective SHS where a reflective grating does the beam splitting. Hence the alignment of this instrument is simple compared with all--reflective SHS where a fold mirror and a roof mirror are used to combine the beam. This instrument is intended to study faint diffuse extended celestial objects with a resolving power above 20000, and can cover a wavelength range from 350 nm to 700 nm by tuning. India's largest 3.6 m aperture optical telescope has been successfully installed in the central Himalayan region at Devasthal, Nainital district, Uttarakhand. The primary mirror of the telescope uses the active optics technology. The back-end instruments, enabling spectroscopic and photometric imaging of the celestial sky are designed and developed by ARIES along with other Indian institutes. We present the results of our power spectral density analysis for the BL Lac object OJ\,287, utilizing the {\it Fermi}-LAT survey at high-energy $\gamma$-rays, {\it Swift}-XRT in X-rays, several ground-based telescopes and the {\it Kepler} satellite in the optical, and radio telescopes at GHz frequencies. The light curves are modeled in terms of continuous-time auto-regressive moving average (CARMA) processes. Owing to the inclusion of the {\it Kepler} data, we were able to construct \emph{for the first time} the optical variability power spectrum of a blazar without any gaps across $\sim6$ dex in temporal frequencies. Our analysis reveals that the radio power spectra are of a colored-noise type on timescales ranging from tens of years down to months, with no evidence for breaks or other spectral features. The overall optical power spectrum is also consistent with a colored noise on the variability timescales ranging from 117 years down to hours, with no hints of any quasi-periodic oscillations. The X-ray power spectrum resembles the radio and optical power spectra on the analogous timescales ranging from tens of years down to months. Finally, the $\gamma$-ray power spectrum is noticeably different from the radio, optical, and X-ray power spectra of the source: we have detected a characteristic relaxation timescale in the {\it Fermi}-LAT data, corresponding to $\sim 150$\,days, such that on timescales longer than this, the power spectrum is consistent with uncorrelated (white) noise, while on shorter variability timescales there is correlated (colored) noise., Comment: ApJ accepted

Collective motion of cells is common in many physiological processes, including tissue development, repair, and tumor formation. Recent experiments have shown that certain malignant cancer cells form clusters in a chemoattractant gradient, which display three different phases of motion: translational, rotational, and random. Intriguingly, all three phases are observed simultaneously, with clusters spontaneously switching between these modes of motion. The origin of this behavior is not understood at present, especially the robust appearance of cluster rotations. Guided by experiments on the motion of two-dimensional clusters in-vitro, we developed an agent based model in which the cells form a cohesive cluster due to attractive and alignment interactions but with potentially different behaviors based on their local environment. We find that when cells at the cluster rim are more motile, all three phases of motion coexist, in excellent agreement with the observations. Using the model we can identify that the transitions between different phases are driven by a competition between an ordered rim and a disordered core accompanied by the creation and annihilation of topological defects in the velocity field. The model makes definite predictions regarding the dependence of the motility phase of the cluster on its size and external chemical gradient, which agree with our experimental data. Microtubules are protein polymers that form "molecular highways" for long-range transport within living cells. Molecular motors actively step along microtubules to shuttle cellular materials between the nucleus and the cell periphery; this transport is critical for the survival and health of all eukaryotic cells. Structural defects in microtubules exist, but whether these defects impact molecular motor-based transport remains unknown. Here, we report a new, to our knowledge, approach that allowed us to directly investigate the impact of such defects. Using a modified optical-trapping method, we examined the group function of a major molecular motor, conventional kinesin, when transporting cargos along individual microtubules. We found that microtubule defects influence kinesin-based transport in vitro. The effects depend on motor number: cargos driven by a few motors tended to unbind prematurely from the microtubule, whereas cargos driven by more motors tended to pause. To our knowledge, our study provides the first direct link between microtubule defects and kinesin function. The effects uncovered in our study may have physiological relevance in vivo.

With their longest dimension typically being less than 100 nm, molecular motors are significantly below the optical-resolution limit. Despite substantial advances in fluorescence-based imaging methodologies, labeling with beads remains critical for optical-trapping-based investigations of molecular motors. A key experimental challenge in bead-based assays is that the number of motors on a bead is not well defined. Particularly for single-molecule investigations, the probability of single versus multiple-motor events has not been experimentally investigated. Here, we used bead travel distance as an indicator of multiple-motor transport and determined the lower-bound probability of bead transport by two or more motors. We limited the ATP concentration to increase our detection sensitivity for multiple- versus single-kinesin transport. Surprisingly, for all but the lowest motor number examined, our measurements exceeded estimations of a previous model by R2-fold. To bridge this apparent gap between theory and experiment, we derived a closed-form expression for the probability of bead transport by multiple motors, and constrained the only free parameter in this model using our experimental measurements. Our data indicate that kinesin extends to ~57 nm during bead transport, suggesting that kinesin exploits its conformational flexibility to interact with microtubules at highly curved interfaces such as those present for vesicle transport in cells. To our knowledge, our findings provide the first experimentally constrained guide for estimating the probability of multiple-motor transport in optical trapping studies. The experimental approach utilized here (limiting ATP concentration) may be generally applicable to studies in which molecular motors are labeled with cargos that are artificial or are purified from cellular extracts.

Within living cells, the transport of cargo is accomplished by groups of molecular motors. Such collective transport could utilize mechanisms which emerge from inter-motor interactions in ways that are yet to be fully understood. Here we combined experimental measurements of two-kinesin transport with a theoretical framework to investigate the functional ramifications of inter-motor interactions on individual motor function and collective cargo transport. In contrast to kinesin's low sidestepping frequency when present as a single motor, with exactly two kinesins per cargo, we observed substantial motion perpendicular to the microtubule. Our model captures a surface-associated mode of kinesin, which is only accessible via inter-motor interference in groups, in which kinesin diffuses along the microtubule surface and rapidly "hops" between protofilaments without dissociating from the microtubule. Critically, each kinesin transitions dynamically between the active stepping mode and this weak surface-associated mode enhancing local exploration of the microtubule surface, possibly enabling cellular cargos to overcome macromolecular crowding and to navigate obstacles along microtubule tracks without sacrificing overall travel distance.

Intracellular transport is essential for maintaining proper cellular function in most eukaryotic cells, with perturbations in active transport resulting in several types of disease. Efficient delivery of critical cargos to specific locations is accomplished through a combination of passive diffusion and active transport by molecular motors that ballistically move along a network of cytoskeletal filaments. Although motor-based transport is known to be necessary to overcome cytoplasmic crowding and the limited range of diffusion within reasonable time scales, the topological features of the cytoskeletal network that regulate transport efficiency and robustness have not been established. Using a continuum diffusion model, we observed that the time required for cellular transport was minimized when the network was localized near the nucleus. In simulations that explicitly incorporated network spatial architectures, total filament mass was the primary driver of network transit times. However, filament traps that redirect cargo back to the nucleus caused large variations in network transport. Filament polarity was more important than filament orientation in reducing average transit times, and transport properties were optimized in networks with intermediate motor on and off rates. Our results provide important insights into the functional constraints on intracellular transport under which cells have evolved cytoskeletal structures, and have potential applications for enhancing reactions in biomimetic systems through rational transport network design., Comment: 46 pages (20 pages main text, 4 main figures + supplement)

We present results of our study on eight dense cores, previously classified as starless, using infrared (3-160 {\micron}) imaging observations with \textit{AKARI} telescope and molecular line (HCN and N$_2$H$^+$) mapping observations with \textit{KVN} telescope. Combining our results with the archival IR to mm continuum data, we examined the starless nature of these eight cores. Two of the eight cores are found to harbor faint protostars having luminosity of $\sim0.3-4.4$ L$_{\odot}$. The other six cores are found to remain as starless and probably are in a dynamically transitional state. The temperature maps produced using multi-wavelength images show an enhancement of about 3-6 K towards the outer boundary of these cores, suggesting that they are most likely being heated externally by nearby stars and/or interstellar radiation fields. Large virial parameters and an over-dominance of red asymmetric line profiles over the cores may indicate that the cores are set into either an expansion or an oscillatory motion, probably due to the external heating. Most of the starless cores show coreshine effect due to the scattering of light by the micron-size dust grains. This may imply that the age of the cores is of the order of $\sim10^{5}$ years, being consistent with the timescale required for the cores to evolve into an oscillatory stage due to the external perturbation. Usual inversion for earthquake source parameters from tsunami wave data incorporates subjective elements. Noisy and possibly insufficient data also results in instability and non-uniqueness in most deterministic inversions. Here we employ the satellite altimetry data for the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman tsunami event to invert the source parameters. Using a finite fault model that represents the extent of rupture and the geometry of the trench, we perform a non-linear joint inversion of the slips, rupture velocities and rise times with minimal a priori constraints. Despite persistently good waveform fits, large variance and skewness in the joint parameter distribution constitute a remarkable feature of the inversion. These uncertainties suggest the need for objective inversion strategies that should incorporate more sophisticated physical models in order to significantly improve the performance of early warning systems.

Motivated to understand the behavior of biological filaments interacting with membranes of various types, we study a theoretical model for the shape and thermodynamics of intrinsically-helical filaments bound to curved membranes. We show filament-surface interactions lead to a host of non-uniform shape equilibria, in which filaments progressively unwind from their native twist with increasing surface interaction and surface curvature, ultimately adopting uniform-contact curved shapes. The latter effect is due to non-linear coupling between elastic twist and bending of filaments on anisotropically-curved surfaces, such as the cylindrical surfaces considered here. Via a combination of numerical solutions and asymptotic analysis of shape equilibria we show that filament conformations are critically sensitive to the surface curvature in both the strong- and weak-binding limits. These results suggest that local structure of membrane-bound chiral filaments is generically sensitive to the curvature-radius of the surface to which it is bound, even when that radius is much larger than the filament intrinsic pitch. Typical values of elastic parameters and interaction energies for several prokaryotic and eukaryotic filaments indicate that biopolymers are inherently very sensitive to the coupling between twist, interactions and geometry and that this could be exploited for regulation of a variety of processes such as the targeted exertion of forces, signaling and self-assembly in response to geometric cues including the local mean and Gaussian curvatures.

Collective and directed motility or swarming is an emergent phenomenon displayed by many self-organized assemblies of active biological matter such as clusters of embryonic cells during tissue development, cancerous cells during tumor formation and metastasis, colonies of bacteria in a biofilm, or even flocks of birds and schools of fish at the macro-scale. Such clusters typically encounter very heterogeneous environments. What happens when a cluster encounters an interface between two different environments has implications for its function and fate. Here we study this problem by using a mathematical model of a cluster that treats it as a single cohesive unit that moves in two dimensions by exerting a force/torque per unit area whose magnitude depends on the nature of the local environment. We find that low speed (overdamped) clusters encountering an interface with a moderate difference in properties can lead to refraction or even total internal reflection of the cluster. For large speeds (underdamped), where inertia dominates, the clusters show more complex behaviors crossing the interface multiple times and deviating from the predictable refraction and reflection for the low velocity clusters. We then present an extreme limit of the model in the absense of rotational damping where clusters can become stuck spiraling along the interface or move in large circular trajectories after leaving the interface. Our results show a wide range of behaviors that occur when collectively moving active biological matter moves across interfaces and these insights can be used to control motion by patterning environments., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

OJ287 is a quasi-periodic quasar with roughly 12 year optical cycles. It displays prominent outbursts which are predictable in a binary black hole model. The model predicted a major optical outburst in December 2015. We found that the outburst did occur within the expected time range, peaking on 2015 December 5 at magnitude 12.9 in the optical R-band. Based on Swift/XRT satellite measurements and optical polarization data, we find that it included a major thermal component. Its timing provides an accurate estimate for the spin of the primary black hole, chi = 0.313 +- 0.01. The present outburst also confirms the established general relativistic properties of the system such as the loss of orbital energy to gravitational radiation at the 2 % accuracy level and it opens up the possibility of testing the black hole no-hair theorem with a 10 % accuracy during the present decade.

We carried out deep and wide-field near- and mid-infrared observations for a sample of 8 bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs). Supplemented with the $Spitzer$ archival data, we have identified and classified 44 to 433 young stellar objects (YSOs) associated with these BRCs. The Class I sources are generally located towards the places with higher extinction and are relatively closer to each other than the Class II sources, confirming that the young protostars are usually found in regions having denser molecular material. On the other hand the comparatively older population, Class II objects, are more randomly found throughout the regions, which can be due to their dynamical evolution. Using the minimal sampling tree analyses, we have extracted 13 stellar cores of 8 or more members, which contains 60\% of the total YSOs. The typical core is $\sim$0.6 pc in radii and somewhat elongated (aspect ratio of 1.45), of relatively low stellar density (surface density 60 pc$^{-2}$), consisting of a small (35) number of YSOs of relatively young sources (66\% Class I ), and partially embedded (median $A_K$ =1.1 mag). But the cores show a wide range in their mass distribution ($\sim$20 to 2400 M$_\odot$) with a median value of around 130 M$_\odot$. We have found the star formation efficiencies in the cores to be between 3\% and 30\% with an average of $\sim$14\%, which agree with the efficiencies needed to link the core mass function to the initial mass function. We also found a linear relation between the density of the clouds and the number of YSOs. Foraging, either solitarily or collectively, is a necessary behavior for survival that is demonstrated by many organisms. Foraging can be collectively optimized by utilizing communication between the organisms. Examples of such communication range from high level strategic foraging by animal groups to rudimentary signaling among unicellular organisms. Here we systematically study the simplest form of communication via long range repulsive interactions between two diffusing Brownian searchers on a one-dimensional lattice. We show that the mean first passage time for either of them to reach a fixed target depends non-monotonically on the range of the interaction and can be optimized for a repulsive range that is comparable to the average spacing between searchers. Our results suggest that even the most rudimentary form of collective searching does in fact lower the search time for the foragers suggesting robust mechanisms for search optimization in cellular communities, Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Dendritic processing is now considered to be important in pre-processing of signals coming into a cell. Dendrites are involved in both propagation and backpropagation of signals. In a cylindrical dendrite, signals moving in either direction will be similar. However, if the dendrites taper, then this is not the case any more. The picture gets more complex if the ion channel distribution along the dendrite is also non-uniform. These equations have been solved using the Chebyshev pseudo-spectral method. Here we look at non-uniform dendritic voltage gated channels in both cylindrical and tapering dendrites. For back-propagating signals, the signal is accentuated in the case of tapering dendrites. We assume a Hodgkin-Huxley formulation of ion channels and solve these equations with the compact finite-difference scheme. The scheme gives spectral-like spatial resolution while being easier to solve than spectral methods. We show that the scheme is able to reproduce the results obtained from spectral methods. The compact difference scheme is widely used to study turbulence in airflow, however it is being used for the first time in our laboratory to solve the equations involving transmission of signals in the brain., Comment: 10 pages, 3 Figures, 3 Tables

Dendrites have voltage-gated ion channels which aid in production of action potentials. Thus dendrites are not just passive conductors of information, but actively act on the incoming input. Here we assume Hodgkin-Huxley formulations of voltage-gated ion channels on the dendrite. These equations are normally solved by some form of central difference scheme or the spectral methods. We use a compact finite-difference scheme to solve these equations. This scheme gives spectral-like spatial resolution while being easier to solve than spectral methods. The scheme has shown to be able to reproduce the results from spectral methods. In this paper cylindrical dendrites are described. It may also be noted that the compact difference scheme can be used to solve any other PDE both in biological as well as non biological systems. The emergence of collective motion, also known as flocking or swarming, in groups of moving individuals who orient themselves using only information from their neighbors is a very general phenomenon that is manifested at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Swarms that occur in natural environments typically have to contend with spatial disorder such as obstacles that hinder an individual's motion or communication with neighbors. We study swarming particles, with both aligning and repulsive interactions, on percolated networks where topological disorder is modeled by the random removal of lattice bonds. We find that an infinitesimal amount of disorder can completely suppress swarming for particles that utilize only alignment interactions suggesting that alignment alone is insufficient. The addition of repulsive forces between particles produces a critical phase transition from a collectively moving swarm to a disordered gas-like state. This novel phase transition is entirely driven by the amount of topological disorder in the particles environment and displays critical features that are similar to those of 2D percolation, while occurring at a value of disorder that is far from the percolation critical point.

Dendrites are extensions to the neuronal cell body in the brain which are posited in several functions ranging from electrical and chemical compartmentalization to coincident detection. Dendrites vary across cell types but one common feature they share is a branched structure. The cable equation is a partial differential equation that describes the evolution of voltage in the dendrite. A solution to this equation is normally found using finite difference schemes. Spectral methods have also been used to solve this equation with better accuracy. Here we report the solution to the cable equation using a compact finite difference scheme which gives spectral like resolution and can be more easily used with modifications to the cable equation like nonlinearity, branching and other morphological transforms. Widely used in the study of turbulent flow and wave propagation, this is the first time it is being used to study conduction in the brain. Here we discuss its usage in a passive, soma dendrite construct. Here we look at the various ways in which lambda(space constant/ variable space constant/length parameter) is calculated in the cases of linear, passive transmission as well as nonlinear active transmission. Changes in morphology are taken into account by including the case of tapering dendrite, branched dendrites, branched dendrites with taper or flare. Chiral polymers are ubiquitous in nature and in the cellular context they are often found in association with membranes. Here we show that surface bound polymers with an intrinsic twist and anisotropic bending stiffness can exhibit a sharp continuous phase transition between states with very different effective persistence lengths as the binding affinity is increased. Above a critical value for the binding strength, determined solely by the torsional modulus and intrinsic twist rate, the filament can exist in a zero twist, surface bound state with a homogeneous stiffness. Below the critical binding strength, twist walls proliferate and function as weak or floppy joints that sharply reduce the effective persistence length that is measurable on long lengthscales. We study the statistics of encounters of L\'evy flights by introducing the concept of vicious L\'evy flights - distinct groups of walkers performing independent L\'evy flights with the process terminating upon the first encounter between walkers of different groups. We show that the probability that the process survives up to time $t$ decays as $t^{-\alpha}$ at late times. We compute $\alpha$ up to the second order in $\epsilon$-expansion, where $\epsilon=\sigma-d$, $\sigma$ is the L\'evy exponent and $d$ is the spatial dimension. For $d=\sigma$, we find the exponent of the logarithmic decay exactly. Theoretical values of the exponents are confirmed by numerical simulations., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

The asymptotic behaviour of the survival or reunion probability of vicious walks with short-range interactions is generally well studied. In many realistic processes, however, walks interact with a long ranged potential that decays in $d$ dimensions with distance $r$ as $r^{-d-\sigma}$. We employ methods of renormalized field theory to study the effect of such long range interactions. We calculate, for the first time, the exponents describing the decay of the survival probability for all values of parameters $\sigma$ and $d$ to first order in the double expansion in $\epsilon=2-d$ and $\delta=2-d-\sigma$. We show that there are several regions in the $\sigma-d$ plane corresponding to different scalings for survival and reunion probabilities.
