We implement and analyse a sparse / indirect-addressing data structure for the Lattice Boltzmann Method to support efficient compute kernels for fluid dynamics problems with a high number of non-fluid nodes in the domain, such as in porous media flows. The data structure is integrated into a code generation pipeline to enable sparse Lattice Boltzmann Methods with a variety of stencils and collision operators and to generate efficient code for kernels for CPU as well as for AMD and NVIDIA accelerator cards. We optimize these sparse kernels with an in-place streaming pattern to save memory accesses and memory consumption and we implement a communication hiding technique to prove scalability. We present single GPU performance results with up to 99% of maximal bandwidth utilization. We integrate the optimized generated kernels in the high performance framework WALBERLA and achieve a scaling efficiency of at least 82% on up to 1024 NVIDIA A100 GPUs and up to 4096 AMD MI250X GPUs on modern HPC systems. Further, we set up three different applications to test the sparse data structure for realistic demonstrator problems. We show performance results for flow through porous media, free flow over a particle bed, and blood flow in a coronary artery. We achieve a maximal performance speed-up of 2 and a significantly reduced memory consumption by up to 75% with the sparse / indirect-addressing data structure compared to the direct-addressing data structure for these applications., Comment: 16 pages, 19 figures

Density functional theory has become the workhorse of quantum physics, chemistry, and materials science. Within these fields, a broad range of applications needs to be covered. These applications range from solids to molecular systems, from organic to inorganic chemistry, or even from electrons to other fermions such as protons or muons. This is emphasized by the plethora of density functional approximations that have been developed for various cases. In this work, a new local hybrid exchange-correlation density functional is constructed from first principles, promoting generality and transferability. We show that constraint satisfaction can be achieved even for admixtures with full exact exchange, without sacrificing accuracy. The performance of the new functional for electronic structure theory is assessed for thermochemical properties, excitation energies, M\"ossbauer isomer shifts, NMR spin--spin coupling constants, NMR shieldings and shifts, magnetizabilities, as well as EPR hyperfine coupling constants. Here, the new density functional shows excellent performance throughout all tests and is numerically robust only requiring small grids for converged results. Additionally, the functional can be easily generalized to arbitrary fermions as shown for electron-proton correlation energies. Therefore, we outline that density functionals generated in this way are general purpose tools for quantum mechanical studies.

Temporal logics are powerful tools that are widely used for the synthesis and verification of reactive systems. The recent progress on Large Language Models (LLMs) has the potential to make the process of writing such specifications more accessible. However, writing specifications in temporal logics remains challenging for all but the most expert users. A key question in using LLMs for temporal logic specification engineering is to understand what kind of guidance is most helpful to the LLM and the users to easily produce specifications. Looking specifically at the problem of reactive program synthesis, we explore the impact of providing an LLM with guidance on the separation of control and data--making explicit for the LLM what functionality is relevant for the specification, and treating the remaining functionality as an implementation detail for a series of pre-defined functions and predicates. We present a benchmark set and find that this separation of concerns improves specification generation. Our benchmark provides a test set against which to verify future work in LLM generation of temporal logic specifications.

This paper presents a novel approach to quantum architecture search by integrating the techniques of ZX-calculus with Genetic Programming (GP) to optimize the structure of parameterized quantum circuits employed in Quantum Machine Learning (QML). Recognizing the challenges in designing efficient quantum circuits for QML, we propose a GP framework that utilizes mutations defined via ZX-calculus, a graphical language that can simplify visualizing and working with quantum circuits. Our methodology focuses on evolving quantum circuits with the aim of enhancing their capability to approximate functions relevant in various machine learning tasks. We introduce several mutation operators inspired by the transformation rules of ZX-calculus and investigate their impact on the learning efficiency and accuracy of quantum circuits. The empirical analysis involves a comparative study where these mutations are applied to a diverse set of quantum regression problems, measuring performance metrics such as the percentage of valid circuits after the mutation, improvement of the objective, as well as circuit depth and width. Our results indicate that certain ZX-calculus-based mutations perform significantly better than others for Quantum Architecture Search (QAS) in all metrics considered. Pairs of entangled photons are important for applications in quantum nanophotonics, where their theoretical description must accommodate their bipartite character. Such character is shared at the other end of the intensity range by, for example, the two degenerate instances of the pump field involved in second-harmonic generation. Describing the interaction of nanophotonic structures with bipartite states of light is, regardless of their intensity, a challenge with important technological applications. Here, we develop a theoretical framework for studying the interaction of material structures with bipartite states of light. The basic element is the symmetrized tensor product space of two copies of an electromagnetic Hilbert space. One of the benefits inherited from the single Hilbert space is that consequences of material symmetries are readily deduced. We derive selection rules for second-order non-linear processes in objects with rotational and/or mirror symmetries. We numerically verify several selection rules by combining quantum-chemical calculations with a Maxwell solver to simulate second-harmonic generation in two different MoS$_2$ clusters. The computationally convenient scattering matrix method is also extended to the tensor product space when the response of the object to one part of the state is independent of the other. For such a case, we obtain the relation between the scattering matrix in the single Hilbert space and the scattering matrix for bipartite states. Such a separable case is relevant for the entanglement evolution of biphoton states interacting with nanostructures. We discuss some possibilities for accommodating the computations of non-linear effects in the framework, for example, through a non-separable scattering operator, where the response of the object to one part of the state depends on the other part., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

Fully distributed learning schemes such as Gossip Learning (GL) are gaining momentum due to their scalability and effectiveness even in dynamic settings. However, they often imply a high utilization of communication and computing resources, whose energy footprint may jeopardize the learning process, particularly on battery-operated IoT devices. To address this issue, we present Optimized Gossip Learning (OGL)}, a distributed training approach based on the combination of GL with adaptive optimization of the learning process, which allows for achieving a target accuracy while minimizing the energy consumption of the learning process. We propose a data-driven approach to OGL management that relies on optimizing in real-time for each node the number of training epochs and the choice of which model to exchange with neighbors based on patterns of node contacts, models' quality, and available resources at each node. Our approach employs a DNN model for dynamic tuning of the aforementioned parameters, trained by an infrastructure-based orchestrator function. We performed our assessments on two different datasets, leveraging time-varying random graphs and a measurement-based dynamic urban scenario. Spin-orbit coupling induces a current density in the ground state, which consequently requires a generalization for meta-generalized gradient approximations. That is, the exchange-correlation energy has to be constructed as an explicit functional of the current density and a generalized kinetic energy density has to be formed to satisfy theoretical constraints. Herein, we generalize our previously presented formalism of spin-orbit current density functional theory [Holzer et al., J. Chem. Phys. 157, 204102 (2022)] to non-magnetic and magnetic periodic systems of arbitrary dimension. Besides the ground-state exchange-correlation potential, analytical derivatives such as geometry gradients and stress tensors are implemented. The importance of the current density is assessed for band gaps, lattice constants, magnetic transitions, and Rashba splittings. For the latter, the impact of the current density may be larger than the deviation between different density functional approximations.

In the last years, Infrared Reflection-Absorption Spectroscopy (IRRAS) became a standard technique to study vibrational excitations of molecules. These investigations are strongly motivated by perspective applications in monitoring chemical processes. For a better understanding of the adsorption mechanism of molecules on dielectrics, the polarization-dependence of an interaction of infrared light with adsorbates at dielectric surfaces is commonly used. Thus, the peak positions in absorption spectra could be different for s- and p-polarized light. This shift between the peak positions depends on both the molecule itself and the dielectric substrate. While the origin of this shift is well understood for infinite two-dimensional adsorbate layers, finite-size samples, which consist of 2D islands of a small number of molecules, have never been considered. Here, we present a study on polarization-dependent finite-size effects in the optical response of such islands on dielectric substrates. The study uses a multi-scale modeling approach that connects quantum chemistry calculations to Maxwell scattering simulations. We distinguish the optical response of a single molecule, a finite number of molecules, and a two-dimensional adsorbate layer. We analyze CO and CO$_2$ molecules deposited on CeO$_2$ and Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates. The evolution of the shift between the polarization-dependent absorbance peaks is firstly studied for a single molecule, which it does not exhibit for at all, and for finite molecular islands, which it increases with increasing island size for, as well as for an infinite two-dimensional adsorbate layer. In the latter case, the agreement between the obtained results and the experimental IRRAS data and more traditional three/four-layer-model theoretical studies supports the predictive power of the multi-scale approach.

Quantum Neural Networks (QNNs) are a popular approach in Quantum Machine Learning due to their close connection to Variational Quantum Circuits, making them a promising candidate for practical applications on Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices. A QNN can be expressed as a finite Fourier series, where the set of frequencies is called the frequency spectrum. We analyse this frequency spectrum and prove, for a large class of models, various maximality results. Furthermore, we prove that under some mild conditions there exists a bijection between classes of models with the same area $A = RL$ that preserves the frequency spectrum, where $R$ denotes the number of qubits and $L$ the number of layers, which we consequently call spectral invariance under area-preserving transformations. With this we explain the symmetry in $R$ and $L$ in the results often observed in the literature and show that the maximal frequency spectrum depends only on the area $A = RL$ and not on the individual values of $R$ and $L$. Moreover, we extend existing results and specify the maximum possible frequency spectrum of a QNN with arbitrarily many layers as a function of the spectrum of its generators. If the generators of the QNN can be further decomposed into 2-dimensional sub-generators, then this specification follows from elementary number-theoretical considerations. In the case of arbitrary dimensional generators, we extend existing results based on the so-called Golomb ruler and introduce a second novel approach based on a variation of the turnpike problem, which we call the relaxed turnpike problem.

The goal of this work is to identify steady-state solutions to dynamical systems defined on large, random families of networks. We do so by passing to a continuum limit where the adjacency matrix is replaced by a non-local operator with kernel called a graphon. This graphon equation is often more amenable to analysis and provides a single equation to study instead of the infinitely many variations of networks that lead to the limit. Our work establishes a rigorous connection between steady-states of the continuum and network systems. Precisely, we show that if the graphon equation has a steady-state solution whose linearization is invertible, there exists related steady-state solutions to the finite-dimensional networked dynamical system over all sufficiently large graphs converging to the graphon. The proof involves setting up a Newton--Kantorovich type iteration scheme which is shown to be a contraction on a suitable metric space. Interestingly, we show that the first iterate of our defined operator in general fails to be a contraction mapping, but the second iterate is proven to contract on the space. We extend our results to show that linear stability properties further carry over from the graphon system to the graph dynamical system. Our results are applied to twisted states in a Kuramoto model of coupled oscillators, steady-states in a model of neuronal network activity, and a Lotka--Volterra model of ecological interaction.

This study develops a computationally efficient phase-field lattice Boltzmann model with the capability to simulate thermocapillary flows. The model was implemented into the open-source simulation framework, waLBerla, and extended to conduct the collision stage using central moments. The multiphase model was coupled with both a passive-scalar thermal LB, and a RK solution to the energy equation in order to resolve temperature-dependent surface tension phenomena. Various lattice stencils (D3Q7, D3Q15, D3Q19, D3Q27) were tested for the passive-scalar LB and both the second- and fourth-order RK methods were investigated. There was no significant difference observed in the accuracy of the LB or RK schemes. The passive scalar D3Q7 LB discretisation tended to provide computational benefits, while the second order RK scheme is superior in memory usage. This paper makes contributions relating to the modelling of thermocapillary flows and to understanding the behaviour of droplet capture with thermal sources analogous to thermal tweezers. Four primary contributions to the literature are identified. First, a new 3D thermocapillary, central-moment phase-field LB model is presented and implemented in the open-source software, waLBerla. Second, the accuracy and computational performance of various techniques to resolve the energy equation for multiphase, incompressible fluids is investigated. Third, the dynamic droplet transport behaviour in the presence of thermal sources is studied and insight is provided on the potential ability to manipulate droplets based on local domain heating. Finally, a concise analysis of the computational performance together with near-perfect scaling results on NVIDIA and AMD GPU-clusters is shown. This research enables the detailed study of droplet manipulation and control in thermocapillary devices.

Second harmonic generation (SHG) is forbidden in centrosymmetric molecular materials. However, a signal is frequently observed from interfaces where the symmetry is broken. Whereas the effect can be phenomenologically accommodated, an ab initio qualitative and quantitative description has remained elusive, preventing the exploration of fascinating questions such as how deep below the surface the second harmonic can still be generated. To answer such questions, we present an ab initio multiscale approach to compute the total and layer-dependent intensity of surface SHG from molecular crystals. The microscopic origin of surface SHG is identified in layer-dependent models with embedding partial charges combined with density functional theory. The models show increasing symmetry-breaking distortions of the electron cloud around the molecules as the surface layer is approached. The SHG at the molecular level is determined using time-dependent density functional theory and then brought to the scale of macroscopic films through a rigorous self-consistent multiple scattering formalism capable of predicting the measurable optical intensities of the generated second harmonic signal. We study crystalline molecular films with centrosymmetric unit cells of 7,9-Dibromobenzo[h]quinolin-10-ol. The intensity of the SHG at the surface layer is two orders of magnitude larger than at the next layer below and three orders of magnitude larger than two layers below. Besides providing fundamental understanding, our approach can be used for designing and optimizing optical devices containing nonlinear molecular materials, such as molecular laminates. We show that a relatively basic Kretschmann-like setup can enhance the surface SHG of a crystalline film of centrosymmetric molecular unit cells a thousand times., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Federated clustering, an integral aspect of federated machine learning, enables multiple data sources to collaboratively cluster their data, maintaining decentralization and preserving privacy. In this paper, we introduce a novel federated clustering algorithm named Dynamically Weighted Federated k-means (DWF k-means) based on Lloyd's method for k-means clustering, to address the challenges associated with distributed data sources and heterogeneous data. Our proposed algorithm combines the benefits of traditional clustering techniques with the privacy and scalability benefits offered by federated learning. The algorithm facilitates collaborative clustering among multiple data owners, allowing them to cluster their local data collectively while exchanging minimal information with the central coordinator. The algorithm optimizes the clustering process by adaptively aggregating cluster assignments and centroids from each data source, thereby learning a global clustering solution that reflects the collective knowledge of the entire federated network. We address the issue of empty clusters, which commonly arises in the context of federated clustering. We conduct experiments on multiple datasets and data distribution settings to evaluate the performance of our algorithm in terms of clustering score, accuracy, and v-measure. The results demonstrate that our approach can match the performance of the centralized classical k-means baseline, and outperform existing federated clustering methods like k-FED in realistic scenarios.

Nanophotonic concepts can improve many measurement techniques by enhancing and tailoring the light-matter interaction. However, the optical response of devices that implement such techniques can be intricate, depending on the sample under investigation. That combination of a promise and a challenge makes nanophotonics a ripe field for applying the concept of a digital twin: a digital representation of an entire real-world device. In this work, we detail the concept of a digital twin with the example of a nanophotonically-enhanced chiral sensing platform. In that platform, helicity-preserving cavities with diffractive mirrors enhance the light-matter interaction between chiral molecules and circularly polarized light, allowing a faster measurement of the circular dichroism of the molecules. However, the sheer presence of the molecules affects the cavity's functionality, demanding a holistic treatment to understand the device's performance. In our digital twin, optical and quantum chemistry simulations are fused to provide a comprehensive description of the device with the molecules across all length scales and predict the circular dichroism spectrum of the device containing molecules to be sensed. Performing simulations in lockstep with the experiment will allow a clear interpretation of the results of complex measurements. We also demonstrate how to design a cavity-enhanced circular dichroism spectrometer by utilizing our digital twin. The study of the operational complexity of minimal pumping constants started in [J. DASSOW and I. JECKER. Operational complexity and pumping lemmas. Acta Inform., 59:337-355, 2022], where an almost complete picture of the operational complexity of minimal pumping constants for two different variants of pumping lemmata from the literature was given. We continue this research by considering a pumping lemma for regular languages that allows pumping of sub-words at any position of the considered word, if the sub-word is long enough [S. J. SAVITCH. Abstract Machines and Grammars. 1982]. First we improve on the simultaneous regulation of minimal pumping constants induced by different pumping lemmata including Savitch's pumping lemma. In this way we are able to simultaneously regulate four different minimal pumping constants. This is a novel result in the field of descriptional complexity. Moreover, for Savitch's pumping lemma we are able to completely classify the range of the minimal pumping constant for the operations Kleene star, reversal, complement, prefix- and suffix-closure, union, set-subtraction, concatenation, intersection, and symmetric difference. In this way, we also solve some of the open problems from the paper that initiated the study of the operational complexity of minimal pumping constants mentioned above., Comment: In Proceedings AFL 2023, arXiv:2309.01126

In this work, we present a clear evidence, based on numerical simulations and experiments, that the polarization compensation due to trapped charge strongly influences the ON/ OFF ratio in Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 (HZO)-based ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs). Furthermore, we identify and explain compensation conditions that enable an optimal operation of FTJs. Our results provide both key physical insights and design guidelines for the operation of FTJs as multilevel synaptic devices.

Clustering a graph when the clusters can overlap can be seen from three different angles: We may look for cliques that cover the edges of the graph with bounded overlap, we may look to add or delete few edges to uncover the cluster structure, or we may split vertices to separate the clusters from each other. Splitting a vertex $v$ means to remove it and to add two new copies of $v$ and to make each previous neighbor of $v$ adjacent with at least one of the copies. In this work, we study underlying computational problems regarding the three angles to overlapping clusterings, in particular when the overlap is small. We show that the above-mentioned covering problem is NP-complete. We then make structural observations that show that the covering viewpoint and the vertex-splitting viewpoint are equivalent, yielding NP-hardness for the vertex-splitting problem. On the positive side, we show that splitting at most $k$ vertices to obtain a cluster graph has a problem kernel with $O(k)$ vertices. Finally, we observe that combining our hardness results with the so-called critical-clique lemma yields NP-hardness for Cluster Editing with Vertex Splitting, which was previously open (Abu-Khzam et al. [ISCO 2018]) and independently shown to be NP-hard by Arrighi et al. [IPEC 2023]. Nonlinear optics is essential for many recent photonic technologies. Here, we introduce a novel multi-scale approach to simulate the nonlinear optical response of molecular nanomaterials combining ab initio quantum-chemical and classical Maxwell-scattering computations. In this approach, the first hyperpolarizability tensor is computed with time-dependent density-functional theory and translated into a multi-scattering formalism that considers the optical interaction between neighboring molecules. A novel object is introduce to perform this transition from quantum-chemistry to classical scattering theory: the Hyper-Transition(T)-matrix. With this object at hand, the nonlinear optical response from single molecules and also from entire photonic devices can be computed, incorporating the full tensorial and dispersive nature of the optical response of the molecules. To demonstrate the applicability of our novel approach, the generation of a second-harmonic signal from a thin film of a Urea molecular crystal is computed and compared to more traditional simulations. Furthermore, an optical cavity is designed, which enhances the second-harmonic response of the molecular film by more than two orders of magnitude. Our approach is highly versatile and accurate and can be the working horse for the future exploration of nonlinear photonic molecular materials in structured photonic environments.

We analyze spatial spreading in a population model with logistic growth and chemorepulsion. In a parameter range of short-range chemo-diffusion, we use geometric singular perturbation theory and functional-analytic farfield-core decompositions to identify spreading speeds with marginally stable front profiles. In particular, we identify a sharp boundary between between linearly determined, pulled propagation, and nonlinearly determined, pushed propagation, induced by the chemorepulsion. The primary goal of the EuroHPC JU project SCALABLE is to develop an industrial Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM)-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver capable of exploiting current and future extreme scale architectures, expanding current capabilities of existing industrial LBM solvers by at least two orders of magnitude in terms of processor cores and lattice cells, while preserving its accessibility from both the end-user and software developer's point of view. This is accomplished by transferring technology and knowledge between an academic code (waLBerla) and an industrial code (LaBS). This paper briefly introduces the characteristics and main features of both software packages involved in the process. We also highlight some of the performance achievements in scales of up to tens of thousand of cores presented on one academic and one industrial benchmark case.

We present a novel method to predict the fracture surface energy, {\gamma}, of isochemically crystallizing silicate glasses using readily available crystallographic structure data of their crystalline counterpart and tabled diatomic chemical bond energies, D0. The method assumes that {\gamma} equals the fracture surface energy of the most likely cleavage plane of the crystal. Calculated values were in excellent agreement with those calculated from glass density, network connectivity and D0 data in earlier work. This finding demonstrates a remarkable equivalence between crystal cleavage planes and glass fracture surfaces.

Electronic circular dichroism is an important optical phenomenon offering insights into chiral molecular materials. On the other hand, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a novel group of crystalline porous thin-film materials that provide tailor-made chemical and physical properties by carefully selecting their building units. Combining these two aspects of contemporary material research and integrating chiral molecules into MOFs promises devices with unprecedented functionality. However, considering the nearly unlimited degrees of freedom concerning the choice of materials and the geometrical details of the possibly structured films, we urgently need to complement advanced experimental methods with equally strong modeling techniques. Most notably, these modeling techniques must cope with the challenge that the material and devices thereof cover size scales from {\AA}ngstr\"oms to mm. In response to that need, we outline a computational workflow that seamlessly combines quantum chemical methods to capture the properties of individual molecules with optical simulations to capture the properties of functional devices made from these molecular materials. We concentrate on chiral properties and apply our work to UiO-67-BINOL MOFs, for which experimental results are available to benchmark the results of our simulations and explore the optical properties of cavities and metasurfaces made from that chiral material.

Conjugated polymers are increasingly used as organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors in electrochemical devices for neuromorphic computing, bioelectronics and energy harvesting. The design of efficient applications relies on high electrochemical doping levels, high electronic conductivity, fast doping/dedoping kinetics and high ionic uptake. In this work, we establish structure-property relations and demonstrate how these parameters can be modulated by the co-existence of order and disorder. We use in-situ time-resolved spectroelectrochemistry, resonant Raman and terahertz conductivity measurements to investigate the electrochemical doping in the different morphological domains of poly(3-hexylthiophene). Our main finding is that bipolarons are found preferentially in disordered polymer regions, where they are formed faster and are thermodynamically more favoured. On the other hand, polarons show a preference for ordered domains, leading to drastically different bipolaron/polaron ratios and doping/dedoping dynamics in the distinct regions. We evidence a significant enhancement of the electronic conductivity when bipolarons start being formed in the disordered regions, while the presence of bipolarons in the ordered regions is detrimental for transport. Our study provides significant advances in the understanding of the impact of morphology on the electrochemical doping of conjugated polymers and the induced increase in conductivity.

We study traveling fronts in a system of one dimensional reaction-diffusion-advection equations motivated by problems in reactive flows. In the limit as a parameter tends to infinity, we construct the approximate front profile and determine the leading order expansion for the selected wavespeed. Such fronts are often constructed as transverse intersections of stable and unstable manifolds of the traveling wave differential equation. However, a re-scaling of the dependent variable leads to a lack of hyperbolicity for one of the end states making the definition of one such manifold unclear. We use geometric blow-up techniques to recover hyperbolicity and following an analysis of the blown up vector field are able to show the existence of a traveling front with a leading order expansion of its speed.

Planning energy production is a challenging task due to its cost-sensitivity, fast-moving energy markets, uncertainties in demand, and technical constraints of power plants. Thus, more complex models of this so-called \emph{unit commitment problem (UCP)} have to be solved more rapidly, a task that probably can be solved more efficiently via quantum computing. In this article, we model a UCP with minimum running and idle times as a quadratic unconstrained optimization problem to solve it on quantum computing hardware. A timely and long-term programme of kaon decay measurements at a new level of precision is presented, leveraging the capabilities of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). The proposed programme is firmly anchored on the experience built up studying kaon decays at the SPS over the past four decades, and includes rare processes, CP violation, dark sectors, symmetry tests and other tests of the Standard Model. The experimental programme is based on a staged approach involving experiments with charged and neutral kaon beams, as well as operation in beam-dump mode. The scientific code generation package lbmpy supports the automated design and the efficient implementation of lattice Boltzmann methods (LBMs) through metaprogramming. It is based on a new, concise calculus for describing multiple relaxation-time LBMs, including techniques that enable the numerically advantageous subtraction of the constant background component from the populations. These techniques are generalized to a wide range of collision spaces and equilibrium distributions. The article contains an overview of lbmpy's front-end and its code generation pipeline, which implements the new LBM calculus by means of symbolic formula manipulation tools and object-oriented programming. The generated codes have only a minimal number of arithmetic operations. Their automatic derivation rests on two novel Chimera transforms that have been specifically developed for efficiently computing raw and central moments. Information contained in the symbolic representation of the methods is further exploited in a customized sequence of algebraic simplifications, further reducing computational cost. When combined, these algebraic transformations lead to concise and compact numerical kernels. Specifically, with these optimizations, the advanced central moment- and cumulant-based methods can be realized with only little additional cost as when compared with the simple BGK method. The effectiveness and flexibility of the new lbmpy code generation system is demonstrated in simulating Taylor-Green vortex decay and the automatic derivation of an LBM algorithm to solve the shallow water equations., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures

We investigate the accepting state complexity of deterministic finite automata for regular languages obtained by applying one of the following operations to languages accepted by permutation automata: union, quotient, complement, difference, intersection, Kleene star, Kleene plus, and reversal. The paper thus joins the study of accepting state complexity of regularity preserving language operations which was initiated by the work [J. Dassow: On the number of accepting states of finite automata, J. Autom., Lang. Comb., 21, 2016]. We show that for almost all of the operations, except for reversal and quotient, there is no difference in the accepting state complexity for permutation automata compared to deterministic finite automata in general. For both reversal and quotient we prove that certain accepting state complexities cannot be obtained; these number are called "magic" in the literature. The accurate and efficient computation of the electromagnetic response of objects made from artificial materials is crucial for designing photonic functionalities and interpreting experiments. Advanced fabrication techniques can nowadays produce new materials as three-dimensional lattices of scattering unit cells. Computing the response of objects of arbitrary shape made from such materials is typically computationally prohibitive unless an effective homogeneous medium approximates the discrete material. In here, we introduce a homogenization method based on the effective T-matrix. Such a matrix captures the exact response of the discrete material, is determined by the T-matrix of the isolated unit cell and the material lattice vectors, and is free of spatial dispersion. The truncation of the effective T-matrix to dipolar order determines the common bi-anisotropic constitutive relations. When combined with quantum-chemical and Maxwell solvers, the method allows one to compute the response of arbitrarily-shaped volumetric patchworks of structured molecular materials and metamaterials.

Energy-recovery linacs (ERLs) have been emphasised by the recent (2020) update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics as one of the most promising technologies for the accelerator base of future high-energy physics. The current paper has been written as a base document to support and specify details of the recently published European roadmap for the development of energy-recovery linacs. The paper summarises the previous achievements on ERLs and the status of the field and its basic technology items. The main possible future contributions and applications of ERLs to particle and nuclear physics as well as industrial developments are presented. The paper includes a vision for the further future, beyond 2030, as well as a comparative data base for the main existing and forthcoming ERL facilities. A series of continuous innovations, such as on intense electron sources or high-quality superconducting cavity technology, will massively contribute to the development of accelerator physics at large. Industrial applications are potentially revolutionary and may carry the development of ERLs much further, establishing another shining example of the impact of particle physics on society and its technical foundation with a special view on sustaining nature.

This study compares the free-surface lattice Boltzmann method (FSLBM) with the conservative Allen-Cahn phase-field lattice Boltzmann method (PFLBM) in their ability to model two-phase flows in which the behavior of the system is dominated by the heavy phase. Both models are introduced and their individual properties, strengths and weaknesses are thoroughly discussed. Six numerical benchmark cases were simulated with both models, including (i) a standing gravity and (ii) capillary wave, (iii) an unconfined rising gas bubble in liquid, (iv) a Taylor bubble in a cylindrical tube, and (v) the vertical and (vi) oblique impact of a drop into a pool of liquid. Comparing the simulation results with either analytical models or experimental data from the literature, four major observations were made. Firstly, the PFLBM selected was able to simulate flows purely governed by surface tension with reasonable accuracy. Secondly, the FSLBM, a sharp interface model, generally requires a lower resolution than the PFLBM, a diffuse interface model. However, in the limit case of a standing wave, this was not observed. Thirdly, in simulations of a bubble moving in a liquid, the FSLBM accurately predicted the bubble's shape and rise velocity with low computational resolution. Finally, the PFLBM's accuracy is found to be sensitive to the choice of the model's mobility parameter and interface width.

We analyze the transition between pulled and pushed fronts both analytically and numerically from a model-independent perspective. Based on minimal conceptual assumptions, we show that pushed fronts bifurcate from a branch of pulled fronts with an effective speed correction that scales quadratically in the bifurcation parameter. Strikingly, we find that in this general context without assumptions on comparison principles, the pulled front loses stability and gives way to a pushed front when monotonicity in the leading edge is lost. Our methods rely on far-field core decompositions that identify explicitly asymptotics in the leading edge of the front. We show how the theoretical construction can be directly implemented to yield effective algorithms that determine spreading speeds and bifurcation points with exponentially small error in the domain size. Example applications considered here include an extended Fisher-KPP equation, a Fisher-Burgers equation, negative taxis in combination with logistic population growth, an autocatalytic reaction, and a Lotka-Volterra model., Comment: 35 pages, 10 figures

The optimal power flow problem is central to many tasks in the design and operation of electric power grids. This problem seeks the minimum cost operating point for an electric power grid while satisfying both engineering requirements and physical laws describing how power flows through the electric network. By additionally considering the possibility of component failures and using an accurate AC power flow model of the electric network, the security-constrained AC optimal power flow (SC-AC-OPF) problem is of paramount practical relevance. To assess recent progress in solution algorithms for SC-AC-OPF problems and spur new innovations, the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency--Energy (ARPA-E) organized Challenge 1 of the Grid Optimization (GO) competition. This paper describes the SC-AC-OPF problem formulation used in the competition, overviews historical developments and the state of the art in SC-AC-OPF algorithms, discusses the competition, and summarizes the algorithms used by the top three teams in Challenge 1 of the GO Competition (Teams gollnlp, GO-SNIP, and GMI-GO).

The LHeC provides an intense, high energy electron beam to collide with the LHC. It represents the highest energy application of energy recovery linac (ERL) technology which is increasingly recognized as one of the major pilot technologies for the development of particle physics because it utilizes and stimulates superconducting RF technology progress, and it increases intensity while keeping the power consumption low. The LHeC instantaneous luminosity is determined through the integrated luminosity goal. The electron beam energy is chosen to achieve TeV cms collision energy and enable competitive searches and precision Higgs boson measurements. The wall-plug power has been constrained to 100 MW. Two super-conducting linacs of about 900 m length, which are placed opposite to each other, accelerate the passing electrons by 8.3 GeV each. Federated Learning as a decentralized artificial intelligence (AI) solution solves a variety of problems in industrial applications. It enables a continuously self-improving AI, which can be deployed everywhere at the edge. However, bringing AI to production for generating a real business impact is a challenging task. Especially in the case of Federated Learning, expertise and resources from multiple domains are required to realize its full potential. Having this in mind we have developed an innovative Federated Learning framework FACT based on Fed-DART, enabling an easy and scalable deployment, helping the user to fully leverage the potential of their private and decentralized data.

Automatic code generation is frequently used to create implementations of algorithms specifically tuned to particular hardware and application parameters. The code generation process involves the selection of adequate code transformations, tuning parameters, and parallelization strategies. We propose an alternative to time-intensive autotuning, scenario-specific performance models, or black-box machine learning to select the best-performing configuration. This paper identifies the relevant performance-defining mechanisms for memory-intensive GPU applications through a performance model coupled with an analytic hardware metric estimator. This enables a quick exploration of large configuration spaces to identify highly efficient code candidates with high accuracy. We examine the changes of the A100 GPU architecture compared to the predecessor V100 and address the challenges of how to model the data transfer volumes through the new memory hierarchy. We show how our method can be coupled to the pystencils stencil code generator, which is used to generate kernels for a range-four 3D-25pt stencil and a complex two-phase fluid solver based on the Lattice Boltzmann Method. For both, it delivers a ranking that can be used to select the best-performing candidate. This paper introduces the Exascale Grid Optimization (ExaGO) toolkit, a library for solving large-scale alternating current optimal power flow (ACOPF) problems including stochastic effects, security constraints and multi-period constraints. ExaGO can run on parallel distributed memory platforms, including massively parallel hardware accelerators such as graphical processing units (GPUs). Measured spectral shifts due to intrinsic stellar variability (e.g., pulsations, granulation) and activity (e.g., spots, plages) are the largest source of error for extreme precision radial velocity (EPRV) exoplanet detection. Several methods are designed to disentangle stellar signals from true center-of-mass shifts due to planets. The EXPRES Stellar Signals Project (ESSP) presents a self-consistent comparison of 22 different methods tested on the same extreme-precision spectroscopic data from EXPRES. Methods derived new activity indicators, constructed models for mapping an indicator to the needed RV correction, or separated out shape- and shift-driven RV components. Since no ground truth is known when using real data, relative method performance is assessed using the total and nightly scatter of returned RVs and agreement between the results of different methods. Nearly all submitted methods return a lower RV RMS than classic linear decorrelation, but no method is yet consistently reducing the RV RMS to sub-meter-per-second levels. There is a concerning lack of agreement between the RVs returned by different methods. These results suggest that continued progress in this field necessitates increased interpretability of methods, high-cadence data to capture stellar signals at all timescales, and continued tests like the ESSP using consistent data sets with more advanced metrics for method performance. Future comparisons should make use of various well-characterized data sets -- such as solar data or data with known injected planetary and/or stellar signals -- to better understand method performance and whether planetary signals are preserved., Comment: 33 pages (+12 pages of Appendix), 10 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in AJ

Novel considerations are presented on the physics, apparatus and accelerator designs for a future, luminous, energy frontier electron-hadron ($eh$) scattering experiment at the LHC in the thirties for which key physics topics and their relation to the hadron-hadron HL-LHC physics programme are discussed. Demands are derived set by these physics topics on the design of the LHeC detector, a corresponding update of which is described. Optimisations on the accelerator design, especially the interaction region (IR), are presented. Initial accelerator considerations indicate that a common IR is possible to be built which alternately could serve $eh$ and $hh$ collisions while other experiments would stay on $hh$ in either condition. A forward-backward symmetrised option of the LHeC detector is sketched which would permit extending the LHeC physics programme to also include aspects of hadron-hadron physics. The vision of a joint $eh$ and $hh$ physics experiment is shown to open new prospects for solving fundamental problems of high energy heavy-ion physics including the partonic structure of nuclei and the emergence of hydrodynamics in quantum field theory while the genuine TeV scale DIS physics is of unprecedented rank., Comment: 27 pages, 24 figures, 6 tables; to appear in Eur. We study Turing bifurcations on one-dimensional random ring networks where the probability of a connection between two nodes depends on the distance between the two nodes. Our approach uses the theory of graphons to approximate the graph Laplacian in the limit as the number of nodes tends to infinity by a nonlocal operator -- the graphon Laplacian. For the ring networks considered here, we employ center manifold theory to characterize Turing bifurcations in the continuum limit in a manner similar to the classical partial differential equation case and classify these bifurcations as sub/super/trans-critical. We derive estimates that relate the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the finite graph Laplacian to those of the graphon Laplacian. We are then able to show that, for a sufficiently large realization of the network, with high probability the bifurcations that occur in the finite graph are well approximated by those in the graphon limit. The number of nodes required depends on the spectral gap between the critical eigenvalue and the remaining ones, with the smaller this gap the more nodes that are required to guarantee that the graphon and graph bifurcations are similar. We demonstrate that if this condition is not satisfied then the bifurcations that occur in the finite network can differ significantly from those in the graphon limit.

In the Intersection Non-Emptiness problem, we are given a list of finite automata $A_1,A_2,\dots,A_m$ over a common alphabet $\Sigma$ as input, and the goal is to determine whether some string $w\in \Sigma^*$ lies in the intersection of the languages accepted by the automata in the list. We analyze the complexity of the Intersection Non-Emptiness problem under the promise that all input automata accept a language in some level of the dot-depth hierarchy, or some level of the Straubing-Th\'{e}rien hierarchy. Automata accepting languages from the lowest levels of these hierarchies arise naturally in the context of model checking. We identify a dichotomy in the dot-depth hierarchy by showing that the problem is already NP-complete when all input automata accept languages of the levels zero or one half and already PSPACE-hard when all automata accept a language from the level one. Conversely, we identify a tetrachotomy in the Straubing-Th\'{e}rien hierarchy. More precisely, we show that the problem is in AC$^0$ when restricted to level zero; complete for LOGSPACE or NLOGSPACE, depending on the input representation, when restricted to languages in the level one half; NP-complete when the input is given as DFAs accepting a language in from level one or three half; and finally, PSPACE-complete when the input automata accept languages in level two or higher. Moreover, we show that the proof technique used to show containment in NP for DFAs accepting languages in the Straubing-Th\'{e}rien hierarchy levels one ore three half does not generalize to the context of NFAs. To prove this, we identify a family of languages that provide an exponential separation between the state complexity of general NFAs and that of partially ordered NFAs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first superpolynomial separation between these two models of computation.

We study epidemic arrival times in meta-population disease models through the lens of front propagation into unstable states. We demonstrate that several features of invasion fronts in the PDE context are also relevant to the network case. We show that the susceptible-infected-recovered model on a network is linearly determined in the sense that the arrival times in the nonlinear system are approximated by the arrival times of the instability in the system linearized near the disease free state. Arrival time predictions are extended to an susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered model. We then study a recent model of social epidemics where high order interactions of individuals lead to faster invasion speeds. For these pushed fronts we compute corrections to the estimated arrival time in this case. Finally, we show how inhomogeneities in local infection rates lead to faster average arrival times.

Ferroelectric tunnel junction devices based on ferroelectric thin films of solid solutions of hafnium dioxide can enable CMOS integration of ultra-low power ferroelectric devices with potential for memory and emerging computing schemes such as in-memory computing and neuromorphic applications. In this work, we present ferroelectric tunnel junctions based on Hf$_{0.5}$Zr$_{0.5}$O$_{2}$ with materials and processes compatible with CMOS back-end-of-line integration. We show a device architecture based on W-Hf$_{0.5}$Zr$_{0.5}$O$_{2}$-Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$-TiN stacks featuring low temperature annealing at 400{\deg}C with performance comparable to those obtained with higher temperature annealing conditions.

Automatic code generation is frequently used to create implementations of algorithms specifically tuned to particular hardware and application parameters. We propose a weakly-supervised multi-view learning approach to learn category-specific surface mapping without dense annotations. We learn the underlying surface geometry of common categories, such as human faces, cars, and airplanes, given instances from those categories. While traditional approaches solve this problem using extensive supervision in the form of pixel-level annotations, we take advantage of the fact that pixel-level UV and mesh predictions can be combined with 3D reprojections to form consistency cycles. As a result of exploiting these cycles, we can establish a dense correspondence mapping between image pixels and the mesh acting as a self-supervisory signal, which in turn helps improve our overall estimates. Our approach leverages information from multiple views of the object to establish additional consistency cycles, thus improving surface mapping understanding without the need for explicit annotations. We also propose the use of deformation fields for predictions of an instance specific mesh. Given the lack of datasets providing multiple images of similar object instances from different viewpoints, we generate and release a multi-view ShapeNet Cars and Airplanes dataset created by rendering ShapeNet meshes using a 360 degree camera trajectory around the mesh. For the human faces category, we process and adapt an existing dataset to a multi-view setup. Through experimental evaluations, we show that, at test time, our method can generate accurate variations away from the mean shape, is multi-view consistent, and performs comparably to fully supervised approaches.

In the search for planets orbiting distant stars the presence of stellar activity in the atmospheres of observed stars can obscure the radial velocity signal used to detect such planets. Furthermore, this stellar activity contamination is set by the star itself and cannot simply be avoided with better instrumentation. Various stellar activity indicators have been developed that may correlate with this contamination. We introduce a new stellar activity indicator called the Stellar Activity F-statistic for Exoplanet surveys (SAFE) that has higher statistical power (i.e., probability of detecting a true stellar activity signal) than many traditional stellar activity indicators in a simulation study of an active region on a Sun-like star with moderate to high signal-to-noise. Also through simulation, the SAFE is demonstrated to be associated with the projected area on the visible side of the star covered by active regions. We also demonstrate that the SAFE detects statistically significant stellar activity in most of the spectra for HD 22049, a star known to have high stellar variability. Additionally, the SAFE is calculated for recent observations of the three low-variability stars HD 34411, HD 10700, and HD 3651, the latter of which is known to have a planetary companion. As expected, the SAFE for these three only occasionally detects activity. Furthermore, initial exploration appears to indicate that the SAFE may be useful for disentangling stellar activity signals from planet-induced Doppler shifts., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

We determine the asymptotic spreading speed of the solutions of a Fisher-KPP reaction-diffusion equation, starting from compactly supported initial data, when the diffusion coefficient is a fixed bounded monotone profile that is shifted at a given forcing speed and satisfies a general uniform ellipticity condition. Depending on the monotony of the profile, we are able to characterize this spreading speed as a function of the forcing speed and the two linear spreading speeds associated to the asymptotic problems. Most notably, when the profile of the coefficient diffusion is increasing we show that there is an intermediate range for the forcing speed where spreading actually occurs at a speed which is larger than the linear speed associated with the homogeneous state around the position of the front. We complement our study with the construction of strictly monotone traveling front solutions with strong exponential decay near the unstable state when the profile of the coefficient diffusion is decreasing and in the regime where the forcing speed is precisely the selected spreading speed.

This book chapter describes a novel approach to training machine learning systems by means of a hybrid computer setup i.e. a digital computer tightly coupled with an analog computer. As an example a reinforcement learning system is trained to balance an inverted pendulum which is simulated on an analog computer, thus demonstrating a solution to the major challenge of adequately simulating the environment for reinforcement learning., Comment: Book chapter

A high-performance implementation of a multiphase lattice Boltzmann method based on the conservative Allen-Cahn model supporting high-density ratios and high Reynolds numbers is presented. Metaprogramming techniques are used to generate optimized code for CPUs and GPUs automatically. The coupled model is specified in a high-level symbolic description and optimized through automatic transformations. The memory footprint of the resulting algorithm is reduced through the fusion of compute kernels. A roofline analysis demonstrates the excellent efficiency of the generated code on a single GPU. The resulting single GPU code has been integrated into the multiphysics framework waLBerla to run massively parallel simulations on large domains. Communication hiding and GPUDirect-enabled MPI yield near-perfect scaling behaviour. Scaling experiments are conducted on the Piz Daint supercomputer with up to 2048 GPUs, simulating several hundred fully resolved bubbles. Further, validation of the implementation is shown in a physically relevant scenario-a three-dimensional rising air bubble in water., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

A model of population growth and dispersal is considered where the spatial habitat is a lattice and reproduction occurs generationally. The resulting discrete dynamical systems exhibits velocity locking, where rational speed invasion fronts are observed to persist as parameters are varied. In this article, we construct locked fronts for a particular piecewise linear reproduction function. These fronts are shown to be linear combinations of exponentially decaying solutions to the linear system near the unstable state. Based upon these front solutions, we then derive expressions for the boundary of locking regions in parameter space. We obtain leading order expansions for the locking regions in the limit as the migration parameter tends to zero. Strict spectral stability in exponentially weighted spaces is also established.
