Choosing models from a well-fitted evolved population that generalizes beyond training data is difficult. We introduce a pragmatic method to estimate model complexity using Hessian rank for post-processing selection. Complexity is approximated by averaging the model output Hessian rank across a few points (N=3), offering efficient and accurate rank estimates. This method aligns model selection with input data complexity, calculated using intrinsic dimensionality (ID) estimators. Using the StackGP system, we develop symbolic regression models for the Penn Machine Learning Benchmark and employ twelve scikit-dimension library methods to estimate ID, aligning model expressiveness with dataset ID. Our data-informed complexity metric finds the ideal complexity window, balancing model expressiveness and accuracy, enhancing generalizability without bias common in methods reliant on user-defined parameters, such as parsimony pressure in weight selection., Comment: Submitted to GECCO 2025

Thermal radiative transfer (TRT) is an essential piece of physics in inertial confinement fusion, high-energy density physics, astrophysics etc. The physical models of this type of problem are defined by strongly coupled differential equations describing multiphysics phenomena. This paper presents a new nonlinear multilevel iterative method with two photon energy grids for solving the multigroup radiative transfer equation (RTE) coupled with the material energy balance equation (MEB). The multilevel system of equations of the method is formulated by means of a nonlinear projection approach. The RTE is projected over elements of phase space to derive the low-order equations of different types. The hierarchy of equations consists of (1) multigroup weighted flux equations which can be interpreted as the multigroup RTE averaged over subintervals of angular range and (2) the effective grey (one-group) equations which are spectrum averaged low-order quasidiffusion (aka variable Eddington factor) equations. The system of RTE, low-order and MEB equations is approximated by the fully implicit Euler time-integration method in which absorption coefficient and emission term are evaluated at the current time step. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate convergence of a multilevel iteration algorithm in the Fleck-Cummings test problem with Marshak wave solved with large number of photon energy groups.

Here we report first results of applying Genetic Programming to obtain equations for constructing reduced-order models of quantum systems, with a particular interest in nuclear Density Functional Theory. We employ the reduced basis method to obtain reduced coordinates as the amplitudes of the reduced basis, and use genetic programming to avoid the need of constructing the reduced equations through, for example, a Galerkin projection. The resulting reduced-order models show excellent performance in both accuracy and speed, including for extrapolations in the control parameters, and show promise as an effective method for emulating computationally demanding calculations in Nuclear Physics

Sharpness-Aware Minimization (SAM) was recently introduced as a regularization procedure for training deep neural networks. It simultaneously minimizes the fitness (or loss) function and the so-called fitness sharpness. The latter serves as a measure of the nonlinear behavior of a solution and does so by finding solutions that lie in neighborhoods having uniformly similar loss values across all fitness cases. In this contribution, we adapt SAM for tree Genetic Programming (TGP) by exploring the semantic neighborhoods of solutions using two simple approaches. By capitalizing upon perturbing input and output of program trees, sharpness can be estimated and used as a second optimization criterion during the evolution. To better understand the impact of this variant of SAM on TGP, we collect numerous indicators of the evolutionary process, including generalization ability, complexity, diversity, and a recently proposed genotype-phenotype mapping to study the amount of redundancy in trees. The experimental results demonstrate that using any of the two proposed SAM adaptations in TGP allows (i) a significant reduction of tree sizes in the population and (ii) a decrease in redundancy of the trees. This paper examines various methods of computing uncertainty and diversity for active learning in genetic programming. We found that the model population in genetic programming can be exploited to select informative training data points by using a model ensemble combined with an uncertainty metric. We explored several uncertainty metrics and found that differential entropy performed the best. We also compared two data diversity metrics and found that correlation as a diversity metric performs better than minimum Euclidean distance, although there are some drawbacks that prevent correlation from being used on all problems. Finally, we combined uncertainty and diversity using a Pareto optimization approach to allow both to be considered in a balanced way to guide the selection of informative and unique data points for training.

Effective communication between a clinician and their patient is critical for delivering healthcare maximizing outcomes. Unfortunately, traditional communication training approaches that use human standardized patients and expert coaches are difficult to scale. Here, we present the development and validation of a scalable, easily accessible, digital tool known as the Standardized Online Patient for Health Interaction Education (SOPHIE) for practicing and receiving feedback on doctor-patient communication skills. SOPHIE was validated by conducting an experiment with 30 participants. We found that participants who underwent SOPHIE performed significantly better than the control in overall communication, aggregate scores, empowering the patient, and showing empathy ($p < 0.05$ in all cases). One day, we hope that SOPHIE will help make communication training resources more accessible by providing a scalable option to supplement existing resources., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

We present high-order, finite element-based Second Moment Methods (SMMs) for solving radiation transport problems in two spatial dimensions. We leverage the close connection between the Variable Eddington Factor (VEF) method and SMM to convert existing discretizations of the VEF moment system to discretizations of the SMM moment system. The moment discretizations are coupled to a high-order Discontinuous Galerkin discretization of the Discrete Ordinates transport equations. We show that the resulting methods achieve high-order accuracy on high-order (curved) meshes, preserve the thick diffusion limit, and are effective on a challenging multi-material problem both in outer fixed-point iterations and in inner preconditioned iterative solver iterations for the discrete moment systems. We also present parallel scaling results and provide direct comparisons to the VEF algorithms the SMM algorithms were derived from.

The determination of orientation relationships in dual or multi-phase materials is very important in the field of interface engineering for the design of materials with tailored properties. In this work, a code is developed for the automated and statistical analysis of the orientation relationship of electron backscatter diffraction data. On the example of Fe-Ni-(Si)-C alloys containing lenticular martensite and retained austenite, the code is applied and it is shown that the orientation relationship (OR) corresponds to the Greninger-Troiano OR and that a statistically reliable investigation of the OR between the retained austenite and the related martensite variants is feasible using the code developed in this study., Comment: in revision currently in Crystals

We study a cast Mg-4.65Al-2.82Ca alloy with a microstructure containing $\alpha$-Mg matrix reinforced with a C36 Laves phase skeleton. Such ternary alloys are targeted for elevated temperature applications in automotive engines since they possess excellent creep properties. However, in application, the alloy may be subjected to a wide range of strain rates and in material development, accelerated testing is often of essence. It is therefore crucial to understand the effect of such rate variations. Here, we focus on their impact on damage formation. Due to the locally highly variable skeleton forming the reinforcement in this alloy, we employ an analysis based on high resolution panoramic imaging by scanning electron microscopy coupled with automated damage analysis by deep learning-based object detection and classification convolutional neural network algorithm (YOLOV5). We find that with decreasing strain rate the dominant damage mechanism for a given strain level changes: at a strain rate of $5\cdot10^{-4}/s$ the evolution of microcracks in the C36 Laves phase governs damage formation. However , when the strain rate is decreased to $5\cdot10^{-6}/s$, interface decohesion at the $\alpha$-Mg/Laves phase interfaces becomes equally important. We also observe a change in crack orientation indicating an increasing influence of plastic co-deformation of the {\alpha}-Mg matrix and Laves phase. We attribute this transition in leading damage mechanism to thermally activated processes at the interface.

Mg-based alloys are industrially used for structural applications, both as solid solutions alloys and as composites containing intermetallic compounds. However, a further development in terms of mechanical properties requires the investigation of underlying causalities between synthesis, processing and microstructure to adjust the mechanical and the corrosion properties, ideally down to the near atomic scale. Such fundamental scientific investigations with high resolution characterisation techniques require model materials of exceptionally high purity and strictly controlled microstructure e.g. with respect to grain size, morphology, chemical homogeneity as well as content and size of oxide inclusions. In this context, the Mg-Al-Ca system appears exceptionally challenging from a metallurgical perspective due to the high reactivity and high vapor pressures, so that conventional industrial techniques cannot be successfully deployed. Here, we demonstrate the applicability of various scientific synthesis methods from arc melting over solution growth to diffusion couples, extending to effects and parameters for thermo-mechanical processing. Suitable pathways to overcome the specific challenges of the Mg-Al-Ca system are demonstrated, as well as the persistent limitations of the current state of the art laboratory metallurgy technology., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

The Laves phase skeleton in cast Mg-Al-Ca alloys is known to provide considerable strengthening. Laves phases such as CaMg$_2$ (C14), Ca(Al,Mg)$_2$ (C36), and CaAl2 (C15) have high melting points, high hardness at room and elevated temperatures, but unfortunately are inherently brittle. Mg-Al-Ca alloys thus have good creep properties but limited ductility. An understanding of the co-deformation behaviour of $\alpha$-Mg and Laves phases is essential for optimising the strength-ductility balance of these alloys. Here, we study the mechanical behaviour of a Mg-4.65Al-2.82Ca alloy using micropillar compression in the $\alpha$-Mg matrix, at $\alpha$-Mg/C36 and $\alpha$-Mg/C15 interfaces and in the C15 phase in combination with scanning electron microscopy (SE imaging), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD), and low-kV scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). We show that both, C15 and C36, Laves phases provide considerable strengthening to the $\alpha$-Mg matrix by delaying the onset of basal slip and extension twinning, while only the C36 phase appears to allow a certain extent of slip transfer/ plastic co-deformation, in spite of its greater anisotropy compared with the cubic C15 phase. We therefore conclude based on these results that strengthening of the $\alpha$-Mg matrix by the C36 Laves phase is preferable given that it combines easy skeleton formation with some co-deformation and considerable stability at common application temperatures of magnesium alloys.

We apply high-order mixed finite element discretization techniques and their associated preconditioned iterative solvers to the Variable Eddington Factor (VEF) equations in two spatial dimensions. The mixed finite element VEF discretizations are coupled to a high-order Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization of the Discrete Ordinates transport equation to form effective linear transport algorithms that are compatible with high-order (curved) meshes. This combination of VEF and transport discretizations is motivated by the use of high-order mixed finite element methods in hydrodynamics calculations at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Due to the mathematical structure of the VEF equations, the standard Raviart Thomas (RT) mixed finite elements cannot be used to approximate the vector variable in the VEF equations. Instead, we investigate three alternatives based on the use of continuous finite elements for each vector component, a non-conforming RT approach where DG-like techniques are used, and a hybridized RT method. We present numerical results that demonstrate high-order accuracy, compatibility with curved meshes, and robust and efficient convergence in iteratively solving the coupled transport-VEF system and in the preconditioned linear solvers used to invert the discretized VEF equations.

The present study is an extension of the work done in Parareal convergence for oscillatory pdes with finite time-scale separation (2019), A. G. Peddle, T. Haut, and B. Wingate, [16], and An asymptotic parallel-in-time method for highly oscillatory pdes (2014), T. Haut and B. Wingate, [10], where a two-level Parareal method with averaging is examined. The method proposed in this paper is a multi-level Parareal method with arbitrarily many levels, which is not restricted to the two-level case. We give an asymptotic error estimate which reduces to the two-level estimate for the case when only two levels are considered. Introducing more than two levels has important consequences for the averaging procedure, as we choose separate averaging windows for each of the different levels, which is an additional new feature of the present study. The different averaging windows make the proposed method especially appropriate for multi-scale problems, because we can introduce a level for each intrinsic scale of the problem and adapt the averaging procedure such that we reproduce the behavior of the model on the particular scale resolved by the level. A secondary function of the mammals' respiratory system is during inspiration to heat the air to body temperature and to saturate it with water before it reaches the alveoli. Relying on a mathematical model, we comprehensively analyze this function, considering all the terrestrial mammals (spanning six orders of magnitude of the body mass, $M$) and focusing on the sole contribution of the lungs to this air conditioning. The results highlight significant differences between the small and the large mammals, as well as between rest and effort, regarding the spatial distribution of heat and water exchanges in the lungs, and in terms of regime of mass transfer taking place in the lumen of the airways. Interestingly, the results show that the mammalian lungs appear to be designed just right to fully condition the air at maximal effort: all generations of the bronchial region of the lungs are mobilized for this purpose. For mammals with a mass above a certain threshold ($\simeq 5$ kg at rest and $\simeq 50$ g at maximal effort), it appears that the maximal value of this evaporation rate scales as $M^{-1/8}$ at rest and $M^{-1/16}$ at maximal effort and that around 40\% (at rest) or 50\% (at maximal effort) of the water/heat extracted from the lungs during inspiration is returned to the bronchial mucosa during expiration, independently of the mass, due to a subtle coupling between different phenomena. This last result implies that, above these thresholds, the amounts of water and heat extracted from the lungs by the ventilation scale with the mass such as the ventilation rate (i.e. as $M^{3/4}$ at rest and $M^{7/8}$ at maximal effort). A schema-guided approach to dialogue management has been shown in recent work to be effective in creating robust customizable virtual agents capable of acting as friendly peers or task assistants. However, successful applications of these methods in open-ended, mixed-initiative domains remain elusive -- particularly within medical domains such as virtual standardized patients, where such complex interactions are commonplace -- and require more extensive and flexible dialogue management capabilities than previous systems provide. In this paper, we describe a general-purpose schema-guided dialogue management framework used to develop SOPHIE, a virtual standardized cancer patient that allows a doctor to conveniently practice for interactions with patients. We conduct a crowdsourced evaluation of conversations between medical students and SOPHIE. Our agent is judged to produce responses that are natural, emotionally appropriate, and consistent with her role as a cancer patient. Furthermore, it significantly outperforms an end-to-end neural model fine-tuned on a human standardized patient corpus, attesting to the advantages of a schema-guided approach.

The use of correlation as a fitness function is explored in symbolic regression tasks and the performance is compared against the typical RMSE fitness function. Using correlation with an alignment step to conclude the evolution led to significant performance gains over RMSE as a fitness function. Using correlation as a fitness function led to solutions being found in fewer generations compared to RMSE, as well it was found that fewer data points were needed in the training set to discover the correct equations. In this paper we introduce an active learning method for symbolic regression using StackGP. The approach begins with a small number of data points for StackGP to model. To improve the model the system incrementally adds a data point such that the new point maximizes prediction uncertainty as measured by the model ensemble. Symbolic regression is re-run with the larger data set. This cycle continues until the system satisfies a termination criterion. We use the Feynman AI benchmark set of equations to examine the ability of our method to find appropriate models using fewer data points. The approach was found to successfully rediscover 72 of the 100 Feynman equations using as few data points as possible, and without use of domain expertise or data translation., Comment: 8 page, 1 figure. The investigation of the deformation behaviour of intermetallic phases is mostly limited to high temperatures due to their low ductility at ambient temperature. Therefore, within this study, nanoindentation experiments on the Al$_{2}$Cu phase were performed from ambient temperature up to 300{\deg}C in conjunction with TEM investigations of the deformed material. It was found that the Al$_{2}$Cu phase starts to soften from temperatures above 150{\deg}C. The low temperature deformation behaviour was dominated by serrated yielding and transitioned towards a smooth deformation behaviour above 150{\deg}C. No slip traces were observed in the vicinity of the indents in both temperature regimes. The predominant dislocations observed after ambient temperature deformation and elevated temperature deformation are assumed to belong to the same operating slip systems. Therefore, the underlying deformation mechanism for both temperatures appears to be the same and thermally activated.

We present a family of discretizations for the Variable Eddington Factor (VEF) equations that have high-order accuracy on curved meshes and efficient preconditioned iterative solvers. The VEF discretizations are combined with a high-order Discontinuous Galerkin transport discretization to form an effective high-order, linear transport method. The VEF discretizations are derived by extending the unified analysis of Discontinuous Galerkin methods for elliptic problems to the VEF equations. This framework is used to define analogs of the interior penalty, second method of Bassi and Rebay, minimal dissipation local Discontinuous Galerkin, and continuous finite element methods. The analysis of subspace correction preconditioners, which use a continuous operator to iteratively precondition the discontinuous discretization, is extended to the case of the non-symmetric VEF system. Numerical results demonstrate that the VEF discretizations have arbitrary-order accuracy on curved meshes, preserve the thick diffusion limit, and are effective on a proxy problem from thermal radiative transfer in both outer transport iterations and inner preconditioned linear solver iterations. In addition, a parallel weak scaling study of the interior penalty VEF discretization demonstrates the scalability of the method out to 1152 processors.

Medium-Mn steels exhibit excellent mechanical properties and lower production costs compared to high-Mn steels, which makes them a potential material for future application in the automotive industry. Intercritical annealing (ICA) after cold rolling allows to control the stacking fault energy (SFE) of austenite, the fraction of ferrite and reverted austenite, and the element partitioning (especially Mn). Although Mn deteriorates the corrosion behavior of Fe-Mn-Al alloys, the influence of austenite fraction and element partitioning of Mn on the electrochemical corrosion behavior has not been investigated yet. Therefore, the electrochemical corrosion behavior in 0.1 M H2SO4 of X6MnAl12-3, which was intercritically annealed for 2 h at 550 {\deg}C, 600 {\deg}C and 700 {\deg}C, was investigated by potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and mass spectroscopy with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS). Additionally, specimens after 1 h and 24 h of immersion were examined via SEM to visualize the corrosion damage. The ICA specimens showed a selective dissolution of reverted austenite due to its micro-galvanic coupling with the adjacent ferrite. The severity of the micro-galvanic coupling can be reduced by decreasing the interface area as well as the chemical gradient of mainly Mn between ferrite and reverted austenite by ICA., Comment: 23 pages, 14 Figures, 4 Tables

Intermetallic phases can significantly improve the creep resistance of magnesium alloys, extending their use to higher temperatures. However, little is known about the deformation behaviour of these phases at application temperatures, which are commonly below their macroscopic brittle-to-ductile-transition temperature. In this study, we therefore investigate the activation of different slip systems of the CaMg$_2$ phase and the occurrence of serrated yielding in the temperature range from 50$^\circ$C to 250$^\circ$C. A decreasing amount of serrated flow with increasing temperature suggests that solute atoms govern the flow behaviour when the CaMg$_{2}$ phase is off-stoichiometric., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures

The microstructure of Mg-Al-Ca alloys consists of a hard intra- and intergranular eutectic Laves phase network embedded in a soft $\alpha$-Mg matrix. For such heterogeneous microstructures, the mechanical response and co-deformation of both phases under external load are not yet fully understood. We therefore used nano- and microindentation in combination with electron microscopy to study the deformation behaviour of an Mg-3.68Al-3.8Ca alloy. We found that the hardness of the Mg$_2$Ca phase was significantly larger than the $\alpha$-Mg phase and stays constant within the measured temperature range. The strain rate sensitivity of the softer $\alpha$-Mg phase and of the interfaces increased while activation volume decreased with temperature. The creep deformation of the Mg$_2$Ca Laves phase was significantly lower than the $\alpha$-Mg phase at 170 $^{\circ}$C. Moreover, the deformation zone around and below microindents depends on the matrix orientation and is influenced by the presence of Laves phases. Most importantly, slip transfer from the $\alpha$-Mg phase to the (Mg,Al)$_2$Ca Laves phase occurred, carried by the basal planes. Based on the observed orientation relationship and active slip systems, a slip transfer mechanism from the soft $\alpha$-Mg phase to the hard Laves phase is proposed. Further, we present implications for future alloy design strategies.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are trained using stochastic gradient descent (SGD)-based optimizers. Recently, the adaptive moment estimation (Adam) optimizer has become very popular due to its adaptive momentum, which tackles the dying gradient problem of SGD. Nevertheless, existing optimizers are still unable to exploit the optimization curvature information efficiently. This paper proposes a new AngularGrad optimizer that considers the behavior of the direction/angle of consecutive gradients. This is the first attempt in the literature to exploit the gradient angular information apart from its magnitude. The proposed AngularGrad generates a score to control the step size based on the gradient angular information of previous iterations. Thus, the optimization steps become smoother as a more accurate step size of immediate past gradients is captured through the angular information. Two variants of AngularGrad are developed based on the use of Tangent or Cosine functions for computing the gradient angular information. Theoretically, AngularGrad exhibits the same regret bound as Adam for convergence purposes. Nevertheless, extensive experiments conducted on benchmark data sets against state-of-the-art methods reveal a superior performance of AngularGrad. We study the convergence of the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method applied to the advection-reaction equation on meshes with reentrant faces. On such meshes, the upwind numerical flux is not smooth, and so the numerical integration of the resulting face terms can only be expected to be first-order accurate. Despite this inexact integration, we prove that the DG method converges with order $\mathcal{O}(h^{p+1/2})$, which is the same rate as in the case of exact integration. Consequently, specialized quadrature rules that accurately integrate the non-smooth numerical fluxes are not required for high-order accuracy. We present a new approach for solving high-order thermal radiative transfer (TRT) using the Variable Eddington Factor (VEF) method (also known as quasidiffusion). Our approach leverages the VEF equations, which consist of the first and second moments of the $S_N$ transport equation, to more efficiently compute the TRT solution for each time step. The scheme consists of two loops - an outer loop to converge the Eddington tensor and an inner loop to converge the iteration between the temperature equation and the VEF system. By converging the outer iteration, one obtains the fully implicit TRT solution for the given time step with a relatively low number of transport sweeps. However, one could choose to perform exactly one outer iteration (and therefore exactly one sweep) per time step, resulting in a semi-implicit scheme that is both highly efficient and robust. In this work, we present a database of multimodal communication features extracted from debate speeches in the 2019 North American Universities Debate Championships (NAUDC). Feature sets were extracted from the visual (facial expression, gaze, and head pose), audio (PRAAT), and textual (word sentiment and linguistic category) modalities of raw video recordings of competitive collegiate debaters (N=717 6-minute recordings from 140 unique debaters). Each speech has an associated competition debate score (range: 67-96) from expert judges as well as competitor demographic and per-round reflection surveys. We observe the fully multimodal model performs best in comparison to models trained on various compositions of modalities. We also find that the weights of some features (such as the expression of joy and the use of the word we) change in direction between the aforementioned models. The deformation behaviour of the intermetallic Al$_{2}$Cu-phase was investigated using atomistic simulations and micropillar compression, where slip on the unexpected {211} and {022} slip planes was revealed. Additionally, all possible slip systems for the intermetallic phases were further evaluated and a preference for the activation of slip systems based on their effective interplanar distances as well as the effective Burgers vector is proposed. The effective interplanar distance corresponds to the manually determined interplanar distance, whereas the effective Burgers vector takes a potential dislocation dissociation into account. This new order is: {211}1/2<111>, {022}1/2<111> and {022}<100>, {110}<001>, {310}<001>, {022}<011>, {110}1/2<111>, {112}<110> and {112}1/2<111> from high to low ratio of deff/beff. Computer mediated conversations (e.g., videoconferencing) is now the new mainstream media. How would credibility be impacted if one could change their race on the fly in these environments? We propose an approach using Deepfakes and a supporting GAN architecture to isolate visual features and alter racial perception. We then crowd-sourced over 800 survey responses to measure how credibility was influenced by changing the perceived race. We evaluate the effect of showing a still image of a Black person versus a still image of a White person using the same audio clip for each survey. We also test the effect of showing either an original video or an altered video where the appearance of the person in the original video is modified to appear more White. We measure credibility as the percent of participant responses who believed the speaker was telling the truth. We found that changing the race of a person in a static image has negligible impact on credibility. However, the same manipulation of race on a video increases credibility significantly (61\% to 73\% with p $<$ 0.05). Imagine an app on your phone or computer that can tell if you are being dishonest, just by processing affective features of your facial expressions, body movements, and voice. People could ask about your political preferences, your sexual orientation, and immediately determine which of your responses are honest and which are not. In this paper we argue why artificial intelligence-based, non-invasive lie detection technologies are likely to experience a rapid advancement in the coming years, and that it would be irresponsible to wait any longer before discussing its implications. Legal and popular perspectives are reviewed to evaluate the potential for these technologies to cause societal harm. To understand the perspective of a reasonable person, we conducted a survey of 129 individuals, and identified consent and accuracy as the major factors in their decision-making process regarding the use of these technologies. In our analysis, we distinguish two types of lie detection technology, accurate truth metering and accurate thought exposing. We generally find that truth metering is already largely within the scope of existing US federal and state laws, albeit with some notable exceptions. In contrast, we find that current regulation of thought exposing technologies is ambiguous and inadequate to safeguard civil liberties. In order to rectify these shortcomings, we introduce the legal concept of mental trespass and use this concept as the basis for proposed regulation., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

The mechanical behaviour of Mg-Al alloys can be largely improved by the formation of an intermetallic Laves phase skeleton, in particular the creep strength. Recent nanomechanical studies revealed plasticity by dislocation glide in the (Mg,Al)$_2$Ca Laves phase, even at room temperature. As strengthening skeleton, this phase remains, however, brittle at low temperature. In this work, we present experimental evidence of slip transfer from the Mg matrix to the (Mg,Al)$_2$Ca skeleton at room temperature and explore associated mechanisms by means of atomistic simulations. We identify two possible mechanisms for transferring Mg basal slip into Laves phases depending on the crystallographic orientation: a direct and an indirect slip transfer triggered by full and partial dislocations, respectively. Our experimental and numerical observations also highlight the importance of interfacial sliding that can prevent the transfer of the plasticity from one phase to the other., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

We present a method for accelerating discrete ordinates radiative transfer calculations for radiative transfer. Our method works with nonlinear positivity fixes, in contrast to most acceleration schemes. The method is based on the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) and using a sequence of rank-one updates to compute the singular value decomposition needed for DMD. Using a sequential method allows us to automatically determine the number of solution vectors to include in the DMD acceleration. We present results for slab geometry discrete ordinates calculations with the standard temperature linearization. Compared with positive source iteration, our results demonstrate that our acceleration method reduces the number of transport sweeps required to solve the problem by a factor of about 3 on a standard diffusive Marshak wave problem, a factor of several thousand on a cooling problem where the effective scattering ratio approaches unity, and a factor of 20 improvement in a realistic, multimaterial radiating shock problem., Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures

We show that differential calculus (in its usual form, or in the general form of topological differential calculus) can be fully imdedded into a functor category (functors from a small category of anchord tangent algebras to anchored sets). To prepare this approach, we define a new, symmetric, presentation of differential calculus, whose main feature is the central r{\^o}le played by the anchor map, which we study in detail. Our aim for developing this theory is twofold: (1) define a setting for calculus over any commutative ring, including finite rings; (2) define a setting that can be generalized to categories of graded rings (super differential calculus).

A standard approach to solving the S$_N$ transport equations is to use source iteration with diffusion synthetic acceleration (DSA). Although this approach is widely used and effective on many problems, there remain some practical issues with DSA preconditioning, particularly on highly heterogeneous domains. For large-scale parallel simulation, it is critical that both (i) preconditioned source iteration converges rapidly, and (ii) the action of the DSA preconditioner can be applied using fast, scalable solvers, such as algebraic multigrid (AMG). For heterogeneous domains, these two interests can be at odds. In particular, there exist DSA diffusion discretizations that can be solved rapidly using AMG, but they do not always yield robust/fast convergence of the larger source iteration. Conversely, there exist robust DSA discretizations where source iteration converges rapidly on difficult heterogeneous problems, but fast parallel solvers like AMG tend to struggle applying the action of such operators. Moreover, very few current methods for the solution of deterministic transport are compatible with voids. This paper develops a new heterogeneous DSA preconditioner based on only preconditioning the optically thick subdomains. The resulting method proves robust on a variety of heterogeneous transport problems, including a linearized hohlraum mesh related to inertial confinement fusion. Moreover, the action of the preconditioner is easily computed using $\mathcal{O}(1)$ AMG iterations, {convergence of the transport iteration typically requires $2-5\times$ less iterations than current state-of-the-art ``full DSA,'' and the proposed method is} trivially compatible with voids. On the hohlraum problem, rapid convergence is obtained by preconditioning less than 3\% of the mesh elements with $5-10$ AMG iterations., Comment: 23 pages, accepted to NSE

Mammals have a high metabolism that produces heat proportionally to the power 3/4 of their mass at rest. Any excess of heat has to be dissipated in the surrounding environment to prevent overheating. Most of that dissipation occurs through the skin, but the efficiency of that mechanism decreases with the animal's mass. The role of the other mechanisms for dissipating heat is then raised, more particularly the one linked to the lung that forms a much larger surface area than the skin. The dissipation occurring in the lung is however often neglected, even though there exists no real knowledge of its dynamics, hidden by the complexity of the organ's geometry and of the physics of the exchanges. Here we show, based on an original and analytical model of the exchanges in the lung, that all mammals, independently of their mass, dissipate through their lung the same proportion of the heat they produced, about 6-7 %. We found that the heat dissipation in mammals' lung is driven by a number, universal among mammals, that arises from the dynamics of the temperature of the bronchial mucosa. We propose a scenario to explain how evolution might have tuned the lung for heat exchanges. Furthermore, our analysis allows to define the pulmonary heat and water diffusive capacities. We show in the human case that these capacities follow closely the oxygen consumption. Our work lays the foundations for more detailed analysis of the heat exchanges occurring in the lung. Future studies should focus on refining our understanding of the universal number identified. In an ecological framework, our analysis paves the way to a better understanding of the mammals' strategies for thermoregulation and of the effect of warming environments on mammals' metabolism.

We present a new flux-fixup approach for arbitrarily high-order discontinuous Galerkin discretizations of the SN transport equation. This approach is sweep-compatible: as the transport sweep is performed, a local quadratic programming (QP) problem is solved in each spatial cell to ensure that the solution satisfies certain physical constraints, including local particle balance. The constraints can be chosen in two ways, leading to two variants of the method: QP Zero (QPZ) and QP Maximum Principle (QPMP). The coefficients of the solution are constrained to be nonnegative in QPZ, and they are constrained by an approximate discrete maximum principle in QPMP. There are two primary takeaways in this paper. First, it is shown that the QPMP method, when used with the positive Bernstein basis, eliminates negativities, preserves high-order accuracy for smooth problems, and significantly dampens unphysical oscillations in the solution. The second takeaway is that the Variable Eddington Factor (VEF) method can be used to accelerate the convergence of source iteration with fixup for problems with optically thick regions. Regardless of whether a fixup is applied, source iteration converges slowly when optically thick regions are present and acceleration is needed. When VEF is combined with fixed-up transport sweeps, the result is a scheme that produces a nonnegative solution, converges independently of the mean free path, and, in the case of the QPMP fixup, adheres to an approximate discrete maximum principle., Comment: Revised draft submitted to Journal of Computational Physics

Strain heterogeneity at the microstructural level plays a vital role in the deformation and fracture behaviour of dual or multi-phase materials. In the present work, the strain heterogeneity, localization and partitioning arising at the sub-micron scale during elevated temperature (170 {\deg}C) tensile deformation of an Mg-5Al-3Ca alloy was investigated using quasi in-situ {\mu}-DIC experiments. The results reveal that the strain is mainly carried by the {\alpha}-Mg phase, while the intermetallic Laves phase plays a critical role in that strain concentrations build up at the {\alpha}-Mg matrix and Laves phase interfaces, hence, reducing the overall deformability of the alloy. In quasi in-situ and bulk material analysis at elevated temperature, cracks were observed to nucleate in the Laves phase, at i) the intersection points of slip lines in the {\alpha}-Mg matrix with the Laves phase and ii) the twin intersections with {\alpha}-Mg/Laves phase interfaces and iii) twin transmissions across {\alpha}-Mg/Laves phase interfaces. Euler number analysis has shown that the (inter-)connectivity of the Laves phase decreases with deformation. Finally, cracks grow preferentially along the Laves phases until the material fractures., Comment: 13 figures

Despite a revolution in the pervasiveness of video cameras in our daily lives, one of the most meaningful forms of nonverbal affective communication, interpersonal eye gaze, i.e. eye gaze relative to a conversation partner, is not available from common video. We introduce the Interpersonal-Calibrating Eye-gaze Encoder (ICE), which automatically extracts interpersonal gaze from video recordings without specialized hardware and without prior knowledge of participant locations. Leveraging the intuition that individuals spend a large portion of a conversation looking at each other enables the ICE dynamic clustering algorithm to extract interpersonal gaze. We validate ICE in both video chat using an objective metric with an infrared gaze tracker (F1=0.846, N=8), as well as in face-to-face communication with expert-rated evaluations of eye contact (r= 0.37, N=170). We then use ICE to analyze behavior in two different, yet important affective communication domains: interrogation-based deception detection, and communication skill assessment in speed dating. We find that honest witnesses break interpersonal gaze contact and look down more often than deceptive witnesses when answering questions (p=0.004, d=0.79). In predicting expert communication skill ratings in speed dating videos, we demonstrate that interpersonal gaze alone has more predictive power than facial expressions.

A promising approach to deform metallic-intermetallic composite materials is the application of electric current pulses during the deformation process to achieve a lower yield strength and enhanced elongation to fracture. This is known as the electroplastic effect. We developed a novel setup to study the electroplastic effect during nanoindentation on individual phases and well-defined interfaces. Using a eutectic Al- Al2Cu alloy as a model material, we compare the electroplastic nanoindentation results to macroscopic electroplastic compression tests. The results of the micro- and macroscopic investigations reveal current induced displacement shifts and stress drops, respectively, with the first displacement shift / stress drop being higher than the subsequent ones. A higher current intensity, higher loading rate and larger pulsing interval all cause increased displacement shifts. This observation, in conjunction with the fact that the first displacement shift is highest, strongly indicates that de-pinning of dislocations from obstacles dominates the mechanical response, rather than solely thermal effects.

We present a novel acceleration technique for improving the convergence of source iteration for discrete ordinates transport calculations. Our approach uses the idea of the dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) to estimate the slowly decaying modes from source iteration and remove them from the solution. The memory cost of our acceleration technique is that the scalar flux for a number of iterations must be stored; the computational cost is a singular value decomposition of a matrix comprised of those stored scalar fluxes.On 1-D slab geometry problems we observe an order of magnitude reduction in the number of transport sweeps required compared to source iteration and that the number of sweeps required is independent of the scattering ratio in the problem. These observations hold for an extremely heterogeneous problem and a 2-D problem. In 2-D we do observe that the effectiveness of the approach slowly degrades as the mesh is refined, but is still about one order of magnitude faster than source iteration., Comment: 4 pages

This paper derives and analyzes new diffusion synthetic acceleration (DSA) preconditioners for the SN transport equation when discretized with a high-order (HO) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization. DSA preconditioners address the need to accelerate solving SN transport when the mean free path $\varepsilon$ of particles is small and the condition number of the SN transport equation scales like $O(\varepsilon^{-2})$. By expanding the SN transport operator in $\varepsilon$ and employing a singular matrix perturbation analysis, we derive a DSA matrix that reduces to the symmetric interior penalty (SIP) DG discretization of diffusion when the mesh is first-order and the total opacity is constant. We prove that preconditioning HO DG SN transport with the SIP DSA matrix results in an $O(\varepsilon)$ perturbation of the identity, and fixed-point iteration therefore converges rapidly for optically thick problems. However, the SIP DSA matrix is conditioned like $O(\varepsilon^{-1})$, making it difficult to invert for small $\varepsilon$. We further derive a new two-part, additive DSA preconditioner based on a continuous discretization of diffusion-reaction, which has a condition number independent of $\varepsilon$, and prove that this DSA variant has the same theoretical efficiency as the SIP DSA preconditioner in the optically thick limit. The analysis is extended to the case of HO (curved) meshes, where so-called mesh cycles can result from elements both being upwind of each other. In particular, we prove that performing two additional transport sweeps between DSA steps yields the same theoretical conditioning of fixed-point iterations as in the cycle-free case. We propose a graph-based sweep algorithm for solving the steady state, mono-energetic discrete ordinates on meshes of high-order curved mesh elements. Our spatial discretization consists of arbitrarily high-order discontinuous Galerkin finite elements using upwinding at mesh element faces. To determine mesh element sweep ordering, we define a directed, weighted graph whose vertices correspond to mesh elements, and whose edges correspond to mesh element upwind dependencies. This graph is made acyclic by removing select edges in a way that approximately minimizes the sum of removed edge weights. Once the set of removed edges is determined, transport sweeps are performed by lagging the upwind dependency associated with the removed edges. The proposed algorithm is tested on several 2D and 3D meshes composed of high-order curved mesh elements.

Mezcal is a traditional alcoholic Mexican spirit distilled from fermented agave juices that has been produced for centuries. Its preparation and testing involves an artisanal method to determine the alcohol content based on pouring a stream of the liquid into a small vessel: if the alcohol content is correct, stable bubbles, known as pearls, form at the surface and remain floating for some time. It has been hypothesized that an increase in bubble lifetime results from a decrease in surface tension due to added surfactants. However, the precise mechanism for extended lifetime remains unexplained. By conducting experiments and numerical simulations, we studied the extended lifetime of pearls. It was found that both changes in fluid properties (resulting from mixing ethanol and water) and the presence of surfactants are needed to observe pearls with a long lifetime. Moreover, we found that the dimensionless lifetime of a bubble first increases with the Bond number, until reaching a maximum at $Bo\approx 1$, and then continuously decreases. Our findings on bubble stability in Mezcal not only explain the effectiveness of the artisanal method, but it also provides insight to other fields where floating bubbles are relevant such as in oceanic foam, bio-foams, froth flotation and magma flows.

This paper focuses on the problem of quantifying the effects of model-structure uncertainty in the context of time-evolving dynamical systems. This is motivated by multi-model uncertainty in computer physics simulations: developers often make different modeling choices in numerical approximations and process simplifications, leading to different numerical codes that ostensibly represent the same underlying dynamics. We consider model-structure inference as a two-step methodology: the first step is to perform system identification on numerical codes for which it is possible to observe the full state; the second step is structural uncertainty quantification (UQ), in which the goal is to search candidate models "close" to the numerical code surrogates for those that best match a quantity-of-interest (QOI) from some empirical dataset. Specifically, we: (1) define a discrete, local representation of the structure of a partial differential equation, which we refer to as the "local dynamical operator" (LDO); (2) identify model structure non-intrusively from numerical code output; (3) non-intrusively construct a reduced order model (ROM) of the numerical model through POD-DEIM-Galerkin projection; (4) perturb the ROM dynamics to approximate the behavior of alternate model structures; and (5) apply Bayesian inference and energy conservation laws to calibrate a LDO to a given QOI. Though considered as an inflammation marker, exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) was shown to be sensitive to airway caliber changes to such an extent that it might be considered as a marker of them. It is thus important to understand how these changes and their localization mechanically affect the total NO flux penetrating the airway lumen (JawNO), hence FENO, independently from any inflammatory status change. A new model was used which simulates NO production, consumption and diffusion inside the airway epithelium wall, then, NO excretion through the epithelial wall into the airway lumen and, finally, its axial transport by diffusion and convection in the airway lumen. This model may also consider the presence of a mucus layer coating the epithelial wall. Simulations were performed that showed the great sensitivity of JawNO to peripheral airways caliber changes. Moreover, FENO showed distinct behaviors depending on the location of the caliber change. Considering a bronchodilation, absence of FENO change was associated with dilation of central airways, FENO increase with dilation up to pre-acinar small airways, and FENO decrease with intra-acinar dilation due to amplification of the back-diffusion flux. The presence of a mucus layer was also shown to play a significant role in FENO changes. Altogether, the present work provides theoretical evidences that specific FENO changes in acute situations are linked to specifically located airway caliber changes in the lung periphery. This opens the way for a new role for FENO as a functional marker of peripheral airway caliber change.

A variant of the Parareal method for highly oscillatory systems of PDEs was proposed by Haut and Wingate (2014). In that work they proved superlinear conver- gence of the method in the limit of infinite time scale separation. Their coarse solver features a coordinate transformation and a fast-wave averag- ing method inspired by analysis of multiple scales PDEs and is integrated using an HMM-type method. However, for many physical applications the timescale separation is finite, not infinite. In this paper we prove con- vergence for finite timescale separaration by extending the error bound on the coarse propagator to this case. We show that convergence requires the solution of an optimization problem that involves the averaging win- dow interval, the time step, and the parameters in the problem. We also propose a method for choosing the averaging window relative to the time step based as a function of the finite frequencies inherent in the problem.

Recent machine learning methods make it possible to model potential energy of atomic configurations with chemical-level accuracy (as calculated from ab-initio calculations) and at speeds suitable for molecular dynam- ics simulation. Best performance is achieved when the known physical constraints are encoded in the machine learning models. For example, the atomic energy is invariant under global translations and rotations, it is also invariant to permutations of same-species atoms. Although simple to state, these symmetries are complicated to encode into machine learning algorithms. In this paper, we present a machine learning approach based on graph theory that naturally incorporates translation, rotation, and permutation symmetries. Specifically, we use a random walk graph kernel to measure the similarity of two adjacency matrices, each of which represents a local atomic environment. This Graph Approximated Energy (GRAPE) approach is flexible and admits many possible extensions. We benchmark a simple version of GRAPE by predicting atomization energies on a standard dataset of organic molecules.

We present a numerical method for solving the time-independent thermal radiative transfer (TRT) equation or the neutron transport (NT) equation when the opacity or cross-section varies rapidly in energy (frequency). The approach is based on a rigorous homogenization of the TRT/NT equation in the energy (frequency) variable. Discretization of the homogenized TRT/NT equation results in a multigroup-type system, and can therefore be solved by standard methods. We demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the approach on three model problems. First we consider the Elsasser band model with constant temperature and a small line spacing. Second, we consider a neutron transport application for fast neutrons incident on iron, where the characteristic resonance spacing necessitates about 16,000 energy discretization parameters if Planck-weighted cross sections are used. Third, we consider an atmospheric TRT problem with an opacity corresponding to water vapor. For all three problems, we demonstrate that we can achieve between 0.1 and 1 percent relative error in the solution, and with several orders of magnitude fewer parameters than a standard multigroup formulation with a comparable accuracy.

We develop the Sparse Approximate Matrix Multiply ($\tt SpAMM$) $n$-body solver for first order Newton Schulz iteration of the matrix square root and inverse square root. The solver performs recursive two-sided metric queries on a modified Cauchy-Schwarz criterion, culling negligible sub-volumes of the product-tensor for problems with structured decay in the sub-space metric. These sub-structures are shown to bound the relative error in the matrix-matrix product, and in favorable cases, to enjoy a reduced computational complexity governed by dimensionality reduction of the product volume. A main contribution is demonstration of a new, algebraic locality that develops under contractive identity iteration, with collapse of the metric-subspace onto the identity's plane diagonal, resulting in a stronger $\tt SpAMM$ bound. Also, we carry out a first order {Fr\'{e}chet} analyses for single and dual channel instances of the square root iteration, and look at bifurcations due to ill-conditioning and a too aggressive $\tt SpAMM$ approximation. Then, we show that extreme $\tt SpAMM$ approximation and contractive identity iteration can be achieved for ill-conditioned systems through regularization, and we demonstrate the potential for acceleration with a scoping, product representation of the inverse factor.

With steadily increasing parallelism for high-performance architectures, simulations requiring a good strong scalability are prone to be limited in scalability with standard spatial-decomposition strategies at a certain amount of parallel processors. This can be a show-stopper if the simulation results have to be computed with wallclock time restrictions (e.g.\,for weather forecasts) or as fast as possible (e.g. for urgent computing). Here, the time-dimension is the only one left for parallelization and we focus on Parareal as one particular parallelization-in-time method. We discuss a software approach for making Parareal parallelization transparent for application developers, hence allowing fast prototyping for Parareal. Further, we introduce a decentralized Parareal which results in autonomous simulation instances which only require communicating with the previous and next simulation instances, hence with strong locality for communication. This concept is evaluated by a prototypical solver for the rotational shallow-water equations which we use as a representative black-box solver.

The manuscript presents a new technique for computing the exponential of skew-Hermitian operators. Principal advantages of the proposed method include: stability even for large time-steps, the possibility to parallelize in time over many characteristic wavelengths, and large speed-ups over existing methods in situations where simulation over long times are required. Numerical examples involving the 2D rotating shallow water equations and the 2D wave equation in an inhomogenous medium are presented, and the method is compared to the 4th order Runge-Kutta (RK4) method and to the use of Chebyshev polynomials. Is is demonstrated that the new method achieves high accuracy over long time intervals, and with speeds that are orders of magnitude faster than both RK4 and the use of Chebyshev polynomials.
