Second-order topological insulators can be characterized by their bulk polarization, which is believed to be intrinsically connected to the center of the Wannier function. In this study, we demonstrate the existence of second-order topological insulators that feature a pair of partially degenerate photonic bands. These arise from the nonsymmorphic glide symmetry in an all-dielectric photonic crystal. The center of the maximally localized Wannier function (MLWF) is consistently located at the origin but is not equivalent with respect to the sum of constituent polarizations. As a result, topological corner modes can be identified by the distinctly hybridized MLWFs that truncate at the sample boundary. Through full-wave numerical simulations paired with microwave experiments, the second-order topology is clearly confirmed and characterized. These topological corner states exhibit notably unique modal symmetries, which are made possible by the inversion of the Wannier bands. Our results provide an alternative approach to explore higher-order topological physics with significant potential for applications in integrated and quantum photonics.

We study the one-dimensional non-Hermitian lattices with linearly varying nonreciprocal hopping, where the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) is found to be dissolved gradually as the strength of nonreciprocity increases. The energy spectrum under the open boundary condition is composed of real and imaginary eigenenergies when the nonreciprocal hopping is weak. Interestingly, the real eigenenergies form an equally spaced ladder, and the corresponding eigenstates are localized at the boundary with a Gaussian distribution due to NHSE. By increasing the nonreciprocity, the number of real eigenenergies will decrease while more and more eigenenergies become imaginary. Accompanied by the real-imaginary transition in the spectrum, the eigenstates are shifted from the boundary into the bulk of the lattice. When the nonreciprocity gets strong enough, the whole spectrum will be imaginary and the NHSE disappears completely in the system; i.e., all the eigenstates become Gaussian bound states localized inside the bulk. We investigate the theory of extending structures by the unified product for perm algebras, and the factorization problem as well as the classifying complements problem in the setting of perm algebras. For a special extending structure, non-abelian extension, we study the inducibility of a pair of automorphisms associated to a non-abelian extension of perm algebras, and give the fundamental sequence of Wells in the context of perm algebras. For a special extending structure, bicrossed product, we introduce the concept of perm bialgebras, equivalently characterized by Manin triples of perm algebras and certain matched pairs of perm algebras. We introduce and study coboundary perm bialgebras, and our study leads to the ''$\mathcal{S}$-equation" in perm algebras, which is an analogue of the classical Yang-Baxter equation. We study the Wannier-Stark (WS) localization in one-dimensional amplitude-chirped lattices with the $j$th onsite potential modulated by a function $Fj\cos(2\pi \alpha j)$, where $F$ is the external field with a period determined by $\alpha=p/q$ ($p$ and $q$ are coprime integers). In the Hermitian (or non-Hermitian) systems with real (or imaginary) fields, we can obtain real (or imaginary) WS ladders in the eigenenergy spectrum. In most cases with $q \geq 2$, there are multiple WS ladders with all the eigenstates localized in the strong field limit. However, in the lattices with $q=4$, the energy-dependent localization phenomenon emerges due to the presence of both spatially periodic and linearly increasing behaviors in the onsite potential. About half the number of eigenstates are gathered at the band center and can extend over a wide region or even the full range of the lattice, even when the field becomes very strong. Moreover, in the non-Hermitian lattices with odd $q$, some of the WS ladders become doubly degenerate, where the eigenstates are evenly distributed at two neighboring sites in a wide regime of field strength. In the data-driven artificial intelligence paradigm, models heavily rely on large amounts of training data. However, factors like sampling distribution imbalance can lead to issues of bias and unfairness in healthcare data. Sensitive attributes, such as race, gender, age, and medical condition, are characteristics of individuals that are commonly associated with discrimination or bias. In healthcare AI, these attributes can play a significant role in determining the quality of care that individuals receive. For example, minority groups often receive fewer procedures and poorer-quality medical care than white individuals in US. Therefore, detecting and mitigating bias in data is crucial to enhancing health equity. Bias mitigation methods include pre-processing, in-processing, and post-processing. Among them, Reweighting (RW) is a widely used pre-processing method that performs well in balancing machine learning performance and fairness performance. RW adjusts the weights for samples within each (group, label) combination, where these weights are utilized in loss functions. However, RW is limited to considering only a single sensitive attribute when mitigating bias and assumes that each sensitive attribute is equally important. This may result in potential inaccuracies when addressing intersectional bias. To address these limitations, we propose M3Fair, a multi-level and multi-sensitive-attribute reweighting method by extending the RW method to multiple sensitive attributes at multiple levels. In conventional plasmonic media and plasmonic metamaterials, such as metallic wire mesh, longitudinal mode of electromagnetic wave manifests itself in frequency overlapping transverse modes, which impedes clear observation of longitudinal-mode-specific physical effects. Through interlacing two sets of wire meshes, an ideal band for longitudinal mode is achieved ranging from zero frequency to plasma frequency where transverse modes are completely forbidden. The unique spectral separation of modes facilitates the observation of pure longitudinal mode and related plasmonic effects in bulk medium. We report the first experiment of anomalous optical transmission, induced solely by electromagnetic longitudinal mode resonance, below plasma frequency in the wire mesh medium.

In this paper, we introduce the notions of crossed module of associative conformal algebras, 2-term strongly homotopy associative conformal algebras, and discuss the relationship between them and the 3-th Hochschild cohomology of associative conformal algebras. We classify the non-abelian extensions by introducing the non-abelian cohomology. We show that non-abelian extensions of an associative conformal algebra can be viewed as Maurer-Cartan elements of a suitable differential graded Lie algebra, and prove that the Deligne groupoid of this differential graded Lie algebra corresponds one to one with the non-abelian cohomology. Based on this classification, we study the inducibility of a pair of automorphisms about a non-abelian extension of associative conformal algebras, and give the fundamental sequence of Wells in the context of associative conformal algebras. Magnetic resonance imaging plays an essential role in clinical diagnosis by acquiring the structural information of biological tissue. Recently, many multi-contrast MRI super-resolution networks achieve good effects. However, most studies ignore the impact of the inappropriate foreground scale and patch size of multi-contrast MRI, which probably leads to inappropriate feature alignment. To tackle this problem, we propose the Flexible Alignment Super-Resolution Network (FASR-Net) for multi-contrast MRI Super-Resolution. The Flexible Alignment module of FASR-Net consists of two modules for feature alignment. (1) The Single-Multi Pyramid Alignment(S-A) module solves the situation where low-resolution (LR) images and reference (Ref) images have different scales. (2) The Multi-Multi Pyramid Alignment(M-A) module solves the situation where LR and Ref images have the same scale. Besides, we propose the Cross-Hierarchical Progressive Fusion (CHPF) module aiming at fusing the features effectively, further improving the image quality. Compared with other state-of-the-art methods, FASR-net achieves the most competitive results on FastMRI and IXI datasets. In this paper, we develop a cohomology theory of a left-symmetric conformal algebra and study its some applications. We define the cohomology of a left-symmetric conformal algebra, and then give an isomorphism between the cohomology spaces of the left-symmetric conformal algebra and its sub-adjacent Lie conformal algebra. As applications of the cohomology theory, we study linear deformations, formal $1$-parameter deformations, $T^*$-extensions of a left-symmetric conformal algebra respectively and obtain some properties., Comment: 16pages

We define a cup product on the Hochschild cohomology of an associative conformal algebra $A$, and show the cup product is graded commutative. We define a graded Lie bracket with the degree $-1$ on the Hochschild cohomology $\HH^{\ast}(A)$ of an associative conformal algebra $A$, and show that the Lie bracket together with the cup product is a Gerstenhaber algebra on the Hochschild cohomology of an associative conformal algebra. Moreover, we consider the Hochschild cohomology of split extension conformal algebra $A\hat{\oplus}M$ of $A$ with a conformal bimodule $M$, and show that there exist an algebra homomorphism from $\HH^{\ast}(A\hat{\oplus}M)$ to $\HH^{\ast}(A)$.

Inspired by the complexity and diversity of biological neurons, a quadratic neuron is proposed to replace the inner product in the current neuron with a simplified quadratic function. Employing such a novel type of neurons offers a new perspective on developing deep learning. When analyzing quadratic neurons, we find that there exists a function such that a heterogeneous network can approximate it well with a polynomial number of neurons but a purely conventional or quadratic network needs an exponential number of neurons to achieve the same level of error. Encouraged by this inspiring theoretical result on heterogeneous networks, we directly integrate conventional and quadratic neurons in an autoencoder to make a new type of heterogeneous autoencoders. To our best knowledge, it is the first heterogeneous autoencoder that is made of different types of neurons. Next, we apply the proposed heterogeneous autoencoder to unsupervised anomaly detection for tabular data and bearing fault signals. The anomaly detection faces difficulties such as data unknownness, anomaly feature heterogeneity, and feature unnoticeability, which is suitable for the proposed heterogeneous autoencoder. Its high feature representation ability can characterize a variety of anomaly data (heterogeneity), discriminate the anomaly from the normal (unnoticeability), and accurately learn the distribution of normal samples (unknownness). Experiments show that heterogeneous autoencoders perform competitively compared to other state-of-the-art models.

In this paper, we study the Batalin-Vilkovisky structure on the Hochschild cohomology of quantum zigzag algebras $A_{q}$ of type $\widetilde{\mathbf{A}}_{1}$. We first calculate the dimensions of Hochschild homology groups and Hochschild cohomology groups of $A_{q}$. Based on these computations, we determine the Hochschild cohomology ring of $A_{q}$, and give the Batalin-Vilkovisky operator and the Gerstenhaber bracket on Hochschild cohomology ring of $A_{q}$ explicitly.

A neural network with the widely-used ReLU activation has been shown to partition the sample space into many convex polytopes for prediction. However, the parameterized way a neural network and other machine learning models use to partition the space has imperfections, \textit{e}.\textit{g}., the compromised interpretability for complex models, the inflexibility in decision boundary construction due to the generic character of the model, and the risk of being trapped into shortcut solutions. In contrast, although the non-parameterized models can adorably avoid or downplay these issues, they are usually insufficiently powerful either due to over-simplification or the failure to accommodate the manifold structures of data. In this context, we first propose a new type of machine learning models referred to as Manifoldron that directly derives decision boundaries from data and partitions the space via manifold structure discovery. Then, we systematically analyze the key characteristics of the Manifoldron such as manifold characterization capability and its link to neural networks. The experimental results on 4 synthetic examples, 20 public benchmark datasets, and 1 real-world application demonstrate that the proposed Manifoldron performs competitively compared to the mainstream machine learning models. Twisted moir\'e superlattices (TMSs) are fascinating materials with exotic physical properties. Despite tremendous studies on electronic, photonic and phononic TMSs, it has never been witnessed that TMSs can exhibit higher-order band topology. Here, we report on the experimental observation of higher-order topological states in acoustic TMSs. By introducing moir\'e twisting in bilayer honeycomb lattices of coupled acoustic resonators, we find a regime with designed interlayer couplings where a sizable band gap with higher-order topology emerges. This higher-order topological phase host unique topological edge and corner states, which can be understood via the Wannier centers of the acoustic Bloch bands below the band gap. We confirm experimentally the higher-order band topology by characterizing the edge and corner states using acoustic pump-probe measurements. Topological phases of matter lie at the heart of physics, connecting elegant mathematical principles to real materials that are believed to shape future electronic and quantum computing technologies. To date, studies in this discipline have almost exclusively been restricted to single-gap band topology because of the Fermi-Dirac filling effect. Here, we theoretically analyze and experimentally confirm a novel class of multi-gap topological phases, which we will refer to as non-Abelian topological semimetals, on kagome geometries. These unprecedented forms of matter depend on the notion of Euler class and frame charges which arise due to non-Abelian charge conversion processes when band nodes of different gaps are braided along each other in momentum space. We identify such exotic phenomena in acoustic metamaterials and uncover a rich topological phase diagram induced by the creation, braiding and recombination of band nodes. Using pump-probe measurements, we verify the non-Abelian charge conversion processes where topological charges of nodes are transferred from one gap to another. Moreover, in such processes, we discover symmetry-enforced intermediate phases featuring triply-degenerate band nodes with unique dispersions that are directly linked to the multi-gap topological invariants. Furthermore, we confirm that edge states can faithfully characterize the multi-gap topological phase diagram. Feature evolvable learning has been widely studied in recent years where old features will vanish and new features will emerge when learning with streams. Conventional methods usually assume that a label will be revealed after prediction at each time step. However, in practice, this assumption may not hold whereas no label will be given at most time steps. A good solution is to leverage the technique of manifold regularization to utilize the previous similar data to assist the refinement of the online model. Nevertheless, this approach needs to store all previous data which is impossible in learning with streams that arrive sequentially in large volume. Thus we need a buffer to store part of them. Considering that different devices may have different storage budgets, the learning approaches should be flexible subject to the storage budget limit. In this paper, we propose a new setting: Storage-Fit Feature-Evolvable streaming Learning (SF$^2$EL) which incorporates the issue of rarely-provided labels into feature evolution. Our framework is able to fit its behavior to different storage budgets when learning with feature evolvable streams with unlabeled data. Besides, both theoretical and empirical results validate that our approach can preserve the merit of the original feature evolvable learning i.e., can always track the best baseline and thus perform well at any time step.

With the rise of social networks, information on the internet is no longer solely organized by web pages. Rather, content is generated and shared among users and organized around their social relations on social networks. This presents new challenges to information retrieval systems. On a social network search system, the generation of result sets not only needs to consider keyword matches, like a traditional web search engine does, but it also needs to take into account the searcher's social connections and the content's visibility settings. Besides, search ranking should be able to handle both textual relevance and the rich social interaction signals from the social network. In this paper, we present our solution to these two challenges by first introducing a social retrieval mechanism, and then investigate novel deep neural networks for the ranking problem. The retrieval system treats social connections as indexing terms, and generates meaningful results sets by biasing towards close social connections in a constrained optimization fashion. The result set is then ranked by a deep neural network that handles textual and social relevance in a two-tower approach, in which personalization and textual relevance are addressed jointly. The retrieval mechanism is deployed on Facebook and is helping billions of users finding postings from their connections efficiently. Topological manipulation of waves is at the heart of the cutting-edge metamaterial researches. Quadrupole topological insulators were recently discovered in two-dimensional (2D) flux-threading lattices which exhibit higher-order topological wave trapping at both the edges and corners. Photonic crystals (PhCs), lying at the boundary between continuous media and discrete lattices, however, are incompatible with the present quadrupole topological theory. Here, we unveil quadrupole topological PhCs triggered by a twisting degree-of-freedom. Using a topologically trivial PhC as the motherboard, we show that twisting induces quadrupole topological PhCs without flux-threading. The twisting-induced crystalline symmetry enriches the Wannier polarizations and lead to the anomalous quadrupole topology. Versatile edge and corner phenomena are observed by controlling the twisting angles in a lateral heterostructure of 2D PhCs. Our study paves the way toward topological twist-photonics as well as the quadrupole topology in the quasi-continuum regime for phonons and polaritons.

Low-energy electrons near Dirac/Weyl nodal points mimic massless relativistic fermions. However, as they are not constrained by Lorentz invariance, they can exhibit tipped-over type-II Dirac/Weyl cones which provide highly anisotropic physical properties and responses, creating unique possibilities. Recently, they have been observed in several quantum and classical systems. Yet, there is still no simple and deterministic strategy to realize them since their nodal points are accidental degeneracies, unlike symmetry-guaranteed type-I counterparts. Here, we propose a band-folding scheme for constructing type-II Dirac points, and we use a tight-binding analysis to unveil its generality and deterministic nature. Through realizations in acoustics, type-II Dirac points are experimentally visualized and investigated using near-field mappings. As a direct effect of tipped-over Dirac cones, strongly tilted kink states originating from their valley-Hall properties are also observed. Learning with feature evolution studies the scenario where the features of the data streams can evolve, i.e., old features vanish and new features emerge. Its goal is to keep the model always performing well even when the features happen to evolve. To tackle this problem, canonical methods assume that the old features will vanish simultaneously and the new features themselves will emerge simultaneously as well. They also assume there is an overlapping period where old and new features both exist when the feature space starts to change. However, in reality, the feature evolution could be unpredictable, which means the features can vanish or emerge arbitrarily, causing the overlapping period incomplete. In this paper, we propose a novel paradigm: Prediction with Unpredictable Feature Evolution (PUFE) where the feature evolution is unpredictable. To address this problem, we fill the incomplete overlapping period and formulate it as a new matrix completion problem. We give a theoretical bound on the least number of observed entries to make the overlapping period intact. With this intact overlapping period, we leverage an ensemble method to take the advantage of both the old and new feature spaces without manually deciding which base models should be incorporated. Theoretical and experimental results validate that our method can always follow the best base models and thus realize the goal of learning with feature evolution.

Valley-Hall phases, first proposed in two-dimensional (2D) materials, originate from nontrivial topologies around valleys which denote local extrema in momentum space. Since they are extended into classical systems, their designs draw inspirations from existing quantum counterparts, and their transports show similar topological protections. In contrast, it is recently established in acoustics that layer pseudospins in valley-Hall phases can give rise to special valley-Hall edge states with fundamentally different transport behaviors at the interfaces compared with various 2D materials. Their realization in other classical systems, such as photonics, would allow us to design topological insulators beyond quantum inspirations. In this work, we show that layer pseudospins exist in photonic valley-Hall phases, using vertically coupled designer surface plasmon crystals, a non-radiative system in open environment supporting tightly-confined propagating modes. The negligible thermal and radiative losses in our structure pave the way for our direct observations of the layer pseudospins and associated topological phenomena stemmed from them in both real and reciprocal spaces. Photonic devices that manipulate signals based on layer pseudospins of the topological phases, such as layer convertors and layer-selected delay lines, are experimentally demonstrated, confirming the potential applications of layer pseudospins as a new degree of freedom carrying information., Comment: 6 figures

The interpretability of deep learning models has raised extended attention these years. It will be beneficial if we can learn an interpretable structure from deep learning models. In this paper, we focus on Recurrent Neural Networks~(RNNs) especially gated RNNs whose inner mechanism is still not clearly understood. We find that Finite State Automaton~(FSA) that processes sequential data has more interpretable inner mechanism according to the definition of interpretability and can be learned from RNNs as the interpretable structure. We propose two methods to learn FSA from RNN based on two different clustering methods. With the learned FSA and via experiments on artificial and real datasets, we find that FSA is more trustable than the RNN from which it learned, which gives FSA a chance to substitute RNNs in applications involving humans' lives or dangerous facilities. Besides, we analyze how the number of gates affects the performance of RNN. Our result suggests that gate in RNN is important but the less the better, which could be a guidance to design other RNNs. Finally, we observe that the FSA learned from RNN gives semantic aggregated states and its transition graph shows us a very interesting vision of how RNNs intrinsically handle text classification tasks.

Many novel properties of non-Hermitian systems are found at or near the exceptional points-branch points of complex energy surfaces at which eigenvalues and eigenvectors coalesce. In particular, higher-order exceptional points can result in optical structures that are ultrasensitive to external perturbations. Here we show that an arbitrary order exceptional point can be achieved in a simple system consisting of identical resonators placed near a waveguide. Unidirectional coupling between any two chiral dipolar states of the resonators mediated by the waveguide mode leads to the exceptional point, which is protected by the transverse spin-momentum locking of the guided wave and is independent of the positions of the resonators. Various analytic response functions of the resonators at the exceptional points are experimentally manifested in the microwave regime. We propose to use logarithmic spiral resonators for efficient absorption of microwaves. By combining their scale invariant geometries and Fabry-Perot-type resonances stemming from the fundamental TM mode, we realize a microwave metasurface with broadband absorption performance. The metasurface comprises logarithmic spiral resonators backed with a metallic surface and it can absorb >95% of incident microwave energy within the frequency range of 6 GHz - 37 GHz. We discuss the physics underlying the broadband absorption and the crucial role of vortex energy flow. Property by design is one appealing idea in material synthesis but hard to achieve in practice. A recent successful example is the demonstration of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures,1-3 in which atomic layers are stacked on each other and different ingredients can be combined beyond symmetry and lattice matching. This concept, usually described as a nanoscale Lego blocks, allows to build sophisticated structures layer by layer. However, this concept has been so far limited in two dimensional (2D) materials. Here we show a class of new material where different layers are coaxially (instead of planarly) stacked. As the structure is in one dimensional (1D) form, we name it "1D vdW heterostructures". We demonstrate a 5 nm diameter nanotube consisting of three different materials: an inner conductive carbon nanotube (CNT), a middle insulating hexagonal boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) and an outside semiconducting MoS2 nanotube. As the technique is highly applicable to other materials in the current 2D libraries,4-6 we anticipate our strategy to be a starting point for discovering a class of new semiconducting nanotube materials. A plethora of function-designable 1D heterostructures will appear after the combination of CNTs, BNNTs and semiconducting nanotubes.

The most intriguing properties of non-Hermitian systems are found near the exceptional points (EPs) at which the Hamiltonian matrix becomes defective. Due to the complex topological structure of the energy Riemann surfaces close to an EP and the breakdown of the adiabatic theorem due to non-Hermiticity, the state evolution in non-Hermitian systems is much more complex than that in Hermitian systems. For example, recent experimental work [Doppler et al. Nature 537, 76 (2016)] demonstrated that dynamically encircling an EP can lead to chiral behaviors, i.e., encircling an EP in different directions results in different output states. Here, we propose a coupled ferromagnetic waveguide system that carries two EPs and design an experimental setup in which the trajectory of state evolution can be controlled in situ using a tunable external field, allowing us to dynamically encircle zero, one or even two EPs experimentally. The tunability allows us to control the trajectory of encircling in the parameter space, including the size of the encircling loop and the starting/end point. We discovered that whether or not the dynamics is chiral actually depends on the starting point of the loop. In particular, dynamically encircling an EP with a starting point in the parity-time-broken phase results in non-chiral behaviors such that the output state is the same no matter which direction the encircling takes. The proposed system is a useful platform to explore the topology of energy surfaces and the dynamics of state evolution in non-Hermitian systems and will likely find applications in mode switching controlled with external parameters., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures

Topological characteristics of energy bands, such as Dirac/Weyl nodes, have attracted substantial interest in condensed matter systems as well as in classical wave systems. Among these energy bands, the type-II Dirac point is a nodal degeneracy with tilted conical dispersion, leading to a peculiar crossing dispersion in the constant energy plane. Such nodal points have recently been found in electronic materials. The analogous topological feature in photonic systems remains a theoretical curiosity, with experimental realization expected to be challenging. Here, we experimentally realize the type-II Dirac point using a planar metasurface architecture, where the band degeneracy point is protected by the underlying mirror symmetry of the metasurface. Gapless edge modes are found and measured at the boundary between the different domains of the symmetry-broken metasurface. Our work shows that metasurfaces are simple and practical platforms for realizing electromagnetic type-II Dirac points, and their planar structure is a distinct advantage that facilitates applications in two-dimensional topological photonics.

We theoretically and experimentally studied resonance-induced hyperbolic metasurfaces, proving that it is an efficient way to introduce Fano-resonance and decreasethe Q-factor in our system in order to create hyperbolic iso-frequency contours (IFCs) along two orthogonal directions. The metasurface with a continuous topological transition for such IFCs has been designed and experimentally implemented. In particular, two independent selfcollimation frequencies corresponding to the transition frequencies in orthogonal directions. As a consequence, we experimentally demonstrated that the metasurface can function as a position- sensor by utilizing the bidirectional hyperbolic surface waves, opening a new avenue for position-sensing.

Learning with streaming data has attracted much attention during the past few years. Though most studies consider data stream with fixed features, in real practice the features may be evolvable. For example, features of data gathered by limited-lifespan sensors will change when these sensors are substituted by new ones. In this paper, we propose a novel learning paradigm: \emph{Feature Evolvable Streaming Learning} where old features would vanish and new features would occur. Rather than relying on only the current features, we attempt to recover the vanished features and exploit it to improve performance. Specifically, we learn two models from the recovered features and the current features, respectively. To benefit from the recovered features, we develop two ensemble methods. In the first method, we combine the predictions from two models and theoretically show that with the assistance of old features, the performance on new features can be improved. In the second approach, we dynamically select the best single prediction and establish a better performance guarantee when the best model switches. Experiments on both synthetic and real data validate the effectiveness of our proposal.

Exceptional points are degeneracies in non-Hermitian systems. A two-state system with parity-time (PT) symmetry usually has only one exceptional point beyond which the eigenmodes are PT-symmetry broken. The so-called symmetry recovery, i.e., eigenmodes become PT-symmetric again, typically occurs in multi-state systems. Here we show that a two-state ferromagnetic waveguide system can have an exceptional point and a subsequent symmetry recovery due to the presence of accidental degeneracy points when the system is lossless. By introducing a parameter space where both exceptional points reside, we designed a system in which the trajectory in the parameter space can be controlled in situ using an adiabatically tunable external field, allowing us to explore the topological and chiral character of the system by encircling zero, one or two exceptional points. We performed microwave experiments to demonstrate the presence of the exceptional point, symmetry recovery, and the effects arising from their dynamical encircling., Comment: 43 pages, 23 figures

Absorption of microwave by metallic conductors is exclusively inefficient, though being natively broadband, due to the huge impedance mismatch between metal and free space. Reducing the thickness to ultrathin conductive film may improve the absorbing efficiency, but is still bounded by a maximal 50% limit induced by the field continuity. Here, we show that broadband perfect (100%) absorption of microwave can be realized on a single layer of ultrathin conductive film when it is illuminated coherently by two oppositely incident beams. Such an effect of breaking the 50% limit maintains the intrinsic broadband feature from the free carrier dissipation, and is frequency-independent in an ultrawide spectrum, ranging typically from kilohertz to gigahertz and exhibiting an unprecedented bandwidth close to 200%. In particular, it occurs on extremely subwavelength scales, ~{\lambda}/10000 or even thinner, which is the film thickness. Our work proposes a way to achieve total electromagnetic wave absorption in a broadband spectrum of radio waves and microwaves with a simple conductive film.

The maximal absorption rate of ultra-thin films is 50% under the condition that the tangential electric (or magnetic) field is almost constant across the film in symmetrical environment. However, with certain reflectors, the absorption rate can be greatly increased, to even perfect absorption (100%). In this work, we explicitly derive the general conditions of the ultra-thin absorptive film parameters to achieve perfect absorption with general types of reflectors under the condition that the tangential electric (or magnetic) field is almost constant across the film. We find that the parameters of the film can be classified into three groups, exhibiting: 1) a large permittivity (permeability), 2) a near-zero permeability (permittivity), or 3) a suitable combination of the permittivity and the permeability, respectively. Interestingly, the latter two cases demonstrate extraordinary absorption in ultra-thin films with almost vanishing losses. Our work serves as a guide for designing ultra-thin perfect absorbers with general types of reflectors.

Transformation optics is a powerful tool to design various novel devices, such as invisibility cloak. Fantastic effects from this technique are usually accompanied with singular mappings, resulting in challenging implementations and narrow bands of working frequencies. Here in this article, we find that Fabry-P\'erot resonances can be used to design various transformation optical devices that are not only easy to realize but also can work well for a set of resonant frequencies (multiple frequencies). A Higgs-Yang Mills monopole scattering spherical symmetrically along light cones is given. The left incoming anti-self-dual \alpha plane fields are holomorphic, but the right outgoing SD \beta plane fields are antiholomorphic, meanwhile the diffeomorphism symmetry is preserved with mutual inverse affine rapidity parameters \mu and \mu^{-1}. The Dirac wave function scattering in this background also factorized respectively into the (anti)holomorphic amplitudes. The holomorphic anomaly is realized by the center term of a quasi Hopf algebra corresponding to an integrable conform affine massive field. We find explicit Nahm transformation matrix(Fourier-Mukai transformation) between the Higgs YM BPS (flat) bundles (D modules) and the affinized blow up ADHMN twistors (perverse sheafs). In this paper we interpret the hidden symmetry of the moduli space of IIB superstring on $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$ in terms of the chiral embedding in $AdS_{5}$, which turns to be the $\mathbb{CP}^{3}$ conformal affine Toda model. We review how the position $\mu $ of poles in the Riemann-Hilbert formulation of dressing transformation and how the value of loop parameters $\mu $ in the vertex operator of affine algebra determines the moduli space of the soliton solutions, which describes the moduli space of the Green-Schwarz superstring. We develop the description of non-commutative geometry of the 4-dimensional quantum Hall fluid's theory proposed recently by Zhang and Hu. The non-commutative structure of fuzzy $S^{4}$ appears naturally in this theory. The fuzzy monopole harmonics, which are the essential elements in this non-commutative geometry, are explicitly constructed and their obeying the matrix algebra is obtained. This matrix algebra is associative. We also propose a fusion scheme of the fuzzy monopole harmonics of the coupling system from those of the subsystems, and determine the fusion rule in such fusion scheme. By products, we provide some essential ingredients of the theory of SO(5) angular momentum. In particular, the explicit expression of the coupling coefficients, in the theory of SO(5) angular momentum, are given. In this Letter, we study the transmission response of microwaves through two identical metallic plates machined with ultranarrow slit arrays. The measured and calculated transmission spectra consistently display a striking transmission peak at wavelength much larger than any characteristic length of the structure (e.g., about twenty-fold of the lattice period), which can not be directly explained by the existing mechanisms. Both the LC-circuit-based microscopic picture and the effective-medium-based macroscopic model are established to capture the essential physics behind such unexpected resonance at the deep subwavelength scale. Prospective applications of this novel transmission property can be anticipated, considering the merits of compact and excellent immunity to structural imperfections.

We study metamaterials with an anisotropic effective permittivity tensor in which one component is near zero. We find that such an anisotropic metamaterial can be used to control wave propagation and construct almost perfect bending waveguides with a high transmission rate (>95%). This interesting effect originates in the power flow redistribution by the surface waves on the input and output interfaces, which smoothly matches with the propagating modes inside the metamaterial waveguide. We also find that waves in such anisotropic epsilon-near-zero materials can be reflected by small-sized perfect magnetic conductor defects. Numerical calculations have been performed to confirm the above effects.

In this paper, we give the general forms of the minimal $L$ matrix (the elements of the $L$-matrix are $c$ numbers) associated with the Boltzmann weights of the $A_{n-1}^1$ interaction-round-a-face (IRF) model and the minimal representation of the $A_{n-1}$ series elliptic quantum group given by Felder and Varchenko. In this paper, we motivate how the Hodge dual related with S-duality gives the hidden symmetry in the moduli space of IIB string. Utilizing the static $% \kappa $-symmetric Killing gauge, if we take the Hodge dual of the vierbeins keeping the connection invariant, the duality of Maure-Cartan equations and the equations of motion becomes manifest. Thus by twistly transforming the vierbein, we can express the BPR currents as the Lax connections by a unique spectral parameter. In this paper, we construct the common eigenstates of "translation" operators $\{U_{s}\}$ and establish the generalized $Kq$ representation on integral noncommutative torus $T^{2N}$. We then study the finite rotation group $G$ in noncommutative space as a mapping in the $Kq$ representation and prove a Blocking Theorem. We finally obtain the complete set of projection operators on the integral noncommutative orbifold $T^{2N}/G$ in terms of the generalized $Kq$ representation. In this paper, we construct a closed form of projectors on the integral noncommutative orbifold $T^2/Z_6$ in terms of elliptic functions by $GHS$ construction. In this paper, we introduce an $N\times N$ matrix $\epsilon^{a\bar{b}}$ in the quantum groups $SU_{q}(N)$ to transform the conjugate representation into the standard form so that we are able to compute the explicit forms of the important quantities in the bicovariant differential calculus on $SU_{q}(N)$, such as the $q$-deformed structure constant ${\bf C}_{IJ}^{~K}$ and the $q$-deformed transposition operator $\Lambda$. From the $q$-gauge covariant condition we define the generalized $q$-deformed Killing form and the $m$-th $q$-deformed Chern class $P_{m}$ for the quantum groups $SU_{q}(N)$. Some useful relations of the generalized $q$-deformed Killing form are presented. In terms of the $q$-deformed homotopy operator we are able to compute the $q$-deformed Chern-Simons $Q_{2m-1}$ by the condition $dQ_{2m-1}=P_{m}$, Furthermore, the $q$-deformed cocycle hierarchy, the $q$-deformed gauge covariant Lagrangian, and the $q$-deformed Yang-Mills equation are derived.
