We present a calculation of the spin polarization of spin-1/2 fermions in a relativistic fluid at local thermodynamic equilibrium at the second order in the gradient expansion, including second-order derivatives. The second-order derivative terms vanish if the local equilibrium hypersurface is the hyperplane $t=const$ in the collision center-of-mass frame. However, since the freeze-out hypersurface has a non-trivial space-time structure, these terms may result in a non-vanishing contribution to the spin polarization, whose magnitude needs to be assessed with numerical computations., Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures

The chiral magnetic wave (CMW) is a collective mode in quark-gluon plasma originated from the chiral magnetic effect (CME) and chiral separation effect. Its detection in heavy-ion collisions is challenging due to significant background contamination. In Ref.[1], we have constructed a neural network which can accurately identify the CME-related signal from the final-state pion spectra. In this paper, we generalize such a neural network to the case of CMW search. We show that, after a updated training, the neural network can effectively recognize the CMW-related signal. We investigate the effects of boost invariance breaking on the isotropization of pressure in the glasma, using the $3+1$D glasma simulation. The breaking is attributed to spatial fluctuations of the classical color charge density along the collision axis. We present numerical results for pressure and energy density at mid-rapidity and across a wider rapidity region. It is found that, despite varying longitudinal correlation lengths, the behaviors of the pressure isotropizations are qualitatively similar. The numerical results suggest that, in the initial stage, longitudinal color electromagnetic fields develop, similar to those in the boost invariant glasma. Subsequently, these fields evolve into a dilute glasma, expanding longitudinally in a manner akin to a dilute gas. We propose to use spectator particle yield ratios to probe the configuration of $\alpha$ clusters in $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O by their collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. The idea is illustrated based on initial density distributions with various $\alpha$-cluster configurations generated by a microscopic cluster model, and without $\alpha$ clusters from mean-field calculations. The multifragmentation of the spectator matter produces more spectator light nuclei including $\alpha$ clusters in collisions of nuclei with chain structure of $\alpha$ clusters, compared to those of nuclei with a more compact structure. The yield ratio of free spectator neutrons to spectator particles with mass-to-charge ratio $A/Z=2$ scaled by their masses can be practically measured by the zero-degree calorimeter (ZDC) at RHIC and LHC, serving as a clean probe free from modeling the complicated dynamics at midrapidities., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We propose a new numerical method for $3+1$D glasma simulation using Milne coordinates. We formulate the classical Yang-Mills field and $3$D classical color current on a lattice at the initial proper time, specified as a moment just before the collision of the two nuclei. By solving the evolution equations, we extract observables of the $3$D glasma at later times. We demonstrate the efficiency of our method in terms of numerical cost and apply it to the central collisions of Au-Au. We demonstrate that in a chiral plasma subject to an external magnetic field, the chiral vortical effect can induce a new type of magnetohydrodynamic instability which we refer to as the {\it chiral magnetovortical instability}. This instability arises from the mutual evolution of the magnetic and vortical fields. We investigate the finite-temperature quantum chromodynamics (QCD) on a rotating lattice with $N_f=2+1$ staggered fermions and the projective plane boundary condition. We observe a negative rotational rigidity (defined in the main text) and a negative quark spin susceptibility associated with the chiral vortical effect. In contrast to most of the effective model predictions, we find that the chiral condensate decreases and the Polyakov loop increases with imaginary rotation, implying a rotational catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking and confinement by real rotation. We determine the phase boundaries for both chiral and confinement-deconfinement phase transitions on the $\Omega_I$-$T$ plane, where $\Omega_I$ is the imaginary angular velocity., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Rapid rotation may exist in physical systems such as non-central heavy ion collisions and neutron stars. Using functional renormalization group analysis of the quark-meson model, we investigate the effects of real and imaginary rotation on the chiral phase transition. Magnetic field plays a crucial role in various novel phenomena in heavy-ion collisions. We solve the Maxwell equations numerically in a medium with time-dependent electric conductivity by using the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) algorithm. We investigate the time evolution of magnetic fields in two scenarios with different electric conductivities at collision energies ranging from $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}}=$ 7.7 to 200 GeV. Our results suggest that the magnetic field may not persist long enough to induce a significant splitting between the global spin polarizations of $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ at freeze-out stage. The nuclear equation of state (EOS) is at the center of numerous theoretical and experimental efforts in nuclear physics. With advances in microscopic theories for nuclear interactions, the availability of experiments probing nuclear matter under conditions not reached before, endeavors to develop sophisticated and reliable transport simulations to interpret these experiments, and the advent of multi-messenger astronomy, the next decade will bring new opportunities for determining the nuclear matter EOS, elucidating its dependence on density, temperature, and isospin asymmetry. Among controlled terrestrial experiments, collisions of heavy nuclei at intermediate beam energies (from a few tens of MeV/nucleon to about 25 GeV/nucleon in the fixed-target frame) probe the widest ranges of baryon density and temperature, enabling studies of nuclear matter from a few tenths to about 5 times the nuclear saturation density and for temperatures from a few to well above a hundred MeV, respectively. Collisions of neutron-rich isotopes further bring the opportunity to probe effects due to the isospin asymmetry. However, capitalizing on the enormous scientific effort aimed at uncovering the dense nuclear matter EOS, both at RHIC and at FRIB as well as at other international facilities, depends on the continued development of state-of-the-art hadronic transport simulations. Ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions (UPCs) offer unique opportunities to study processes under strong electromagnetic fields. In these collisions, highly charged fast-moving ions carry strong electromagnetic fields that can be effectively treated as photon fluxes. The exchange of photons can induce photonuclear and two-photon interactions, and excite ions. This excitation of the ions results in Coulomb dissociation with the emission of photons, neutrons, and other particles. Additionally, the electromagnetic fields generated by the ions can be sufficiently strong to enforce mutual interactions between the two colliding ions. Consequently, the two colliding ions experienced an electromagnetic force that pushed them in opposite directions, causing a back-to-back correlation in the emitted neutrons. Using a Monte Carlo simulation, we qualitatively demonstrated that the above electromagnetic effect is large enough to be observed in UPCs, which would provide a clear means to study strong electromagnetic fields and their effects., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, published version at NST

Relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) provides an extremely useful description of the low-energy long-wavelength phenomena in a variety of physical systems from quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions to matters in supernovas, compact stars, and early universe. We review the recent theoretical progresses of RMHD, such as a formulation of RMHD from the perspective of magnetic flux conservation using the entropy-current analysis, the nonequilibrium statistical operator approach applied to quantum electrodynamics, and the relativistic kinetic theory. We discuss how the transport coefficients in RMHD are computed in kinetic theory and perturbative quantum field theories. We also explore the collective modes and instabilities in RMHD with a special emphasis on the role of chirality in a parity-odd plasma. We develop a relativistic (quasi-)hydrodynamic framework, dubbed the gyrohydrodynamics, to describe fluid dynamics of many-body systems with spin under strong vorticity based on entropy-current analysis. This framework generalizes the recently-developed spin hydrodynamics to the regime where the spin density is at the leading order in derivatives but suppressed by another small parameter, the Planck constant $\hbar$, due to its quantum nature. Our analysis shows that the complete first-order constitutive relations of gyrohydrodynamics involve seventeen transport coefficients and are highly anisotropic.

We compute the relaxation rate of the spin density of heavy quarks in a perturbative QCD plasma to leading-log order in the coupling constant $g$. The spin relaxation rate $\Gamma_s$ in spin hydrodynamics is shown to be $\Gamma_s\sim g^4\log(1/g)T (T/M)^2$ in the heavy-quark limit $T/M\ll 1$, which is smaller than the relaxation rate of other non-hydrodynamic modes by additional powers of $T/M$. We demonstrate three different methods to evaluate the spin relaxation rate: 1) the Green-Kubo formula in the spin hydrodynamic regime, 2) the spin density correlation function in the strict hydrodynamic limit, and 3) quantum kinetic theory of the spin distribution function in momentum space. Chiral anomaly and the novel quantum phenomena it induces have been widely studied for Dirac and Weyl fermions. In most typical cases, the Lorentz covariance is assumed and thus the linear dispersion relations are maintained. However, in realistic materials, such as Dirac and Weyl semimetals, the non-linear dispersion relations appear naturally. We develop a kinetic framework to study the chiral anomaly for Weyl fermions with non-linear dispersions by using the methods of Wigner function and semi-classical equations of motion. In this framework, the chiral anomaly is sourced by Berry monopoles in momentum space and could be enhanced or suppressed due to the windings around the Berry monopoles. In this study, Au+Au collisions with the impact parameter of $0 \leq b \leq 12.5$ fm at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV are simulated by the AMPT model to provide the preliminary final-state information. After transforming these information into appropriate input data (the energy spectra of final-state charged hadrons), we construct a deep neural network (DNN) and a convolutional neural network (CNN) to connect final-state observables with impact parameters. The results show that both the DNN and CNN can reconstruct the impact parameters with a mean absolute error about $0.4$ fm with CNN behaving slightly better. Then, we test the neural networks for different beam energies and pseudorapidity ranges in this task. It turns out that these two models work well for both low and high energies. But when making test for a larger pseudorapidity window, we observe that the CNN shows higher prediction accuracy than the DNN. With the method of Grad-CAM, we shed light on the `attention' mechanism of the CNN model.

We derive a Cooper-Frye type spin polarization formula for Dirac fermions at local thermal equilibrium described by a grand canonical ensemble specified by temperature, fluid velocity, chemical potential, and spin potential. We discuss the physical meaning of different contributions to spin polarization and compare them with previous works. Within the framework of Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model, we extract the global spin polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperon in $^{108}$Ag + $^{108}$Ag and $^{197}$Au + $^{197}$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 2.42 - 62.4$ GeV. We use two different approaches to calculate the $\Lambda$ polarization $P_y$: approach I is based on equilibrium assumption so that $P_y$ is determined by thermal vorticity and approach II assumes a proportional relation between $P_y$ and the system's angular momentum in $\Lambda$'s rest frame. We find that both approaches can describe the experimental data at low energies around a few GeV but only approach I describes well also higher-energy data. This suggests that at higher energies the relativistic effect plays an important role. We study the global polarizations of $\Lambda$, $\Xi^-$, and $\Omega^-$ hyperons in noncentral Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=$ 7.7-200 GeV. We highlight the importance of effect of decay feeddown to the measured global polarization. With the decay contributions taken into account, the global polarization ordering $P_{\Omega^-} > P_{\Xi^-} > P_\Lambda$ can be naturally explained, which is consistent with the observation recently reported from the STAR experiment from Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV. We give an introduction to the phase structure of QCD matter under rotation based on effective four-fermion models. The effects of the magnetic field on the rotating QCD matter are also explored. Using the second law of local thermodynamics and the first-order Palatini formalism, we formulate relativistic spin hydrodynamics for quantum field theories with Dirac fermions, such as QED and QCD, in a torsionful curved background. We work in a regime where spin density, which is assumed to relax much slower than other non-hydrodynamic modes, is treated as an independent degree of freedom in an extended hydrodynamic description. Spin hydrodynamics in our approach contains only three non-hydrodynamic modes corresponding to a spin vector, whose relaxation time is controlled by a new transport coefficient: the rotational viscosity. We study linear response theory and observe an interesting mode mixing phenomenon between the transverse shear and the spin density modes. Global spin polarization of hyperons is an important observable to probe the vorticity of the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions. We calculate the global polarizations of $\Lambda$, $\Xi^-$, and $\Omega^-$ in Au+Au collisions at energies $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}}=$ 7.7--200 GeV based on a multiphase transport model. Our calculations suggest that their primary global polarizations fulfill $P_{\Omega^-}\simeq 5/3P_{\Xi^-}\simeq 5/3P_\Lambda$. We also estimate the feed-down effect of particle decay on the global polarization. With the feed-down effect taken into account, the global polarizations of $\Lambda$ and $\Xi^-$ are clearly separated, and the final global polarizations are in the ordering: $P_{\Omega^-}>P_{\Xi^-}>P_\Lambda$. The search of chiral magnetic effect (CME) in heavy-ion collisions has attracted long-term attentions. Multiple observables have been proposed but all suffer from obstacles due to large background contaminations. In this Letter, we construct an observable-independent CME-meter based on a deep convolutional neural network. After trained over data set generated by a multiphase transport model, the CME-meter shows high accuracy in recognizing the CME-featured charge separation from the final-state pion spectra. It also exhibits remarkable robustness to diverse conditions including different collision energies, centralities, and elliptic flow backgrounds. In a transfer learning manner, the CME-meter is validated in isobaric collision systems, showing good transferability among different colliding systems. Based on variational approaches, we utilize the DeepDream method to derive the most responsive CME-spectra that demonstrates the physical contents the machine learns., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures

We analytically investigate hydrodynamic attractor solutions in both M\"{u}ller-Israel-Stewart (MIS) and kinetic theories in a viscous fluid system undergoing a Hubble expansion with a fixed expansion rate. We show that the gradient expansion for the MIS theory and the Chapman-Enskog expansion for the Boltzmann equation within the relaxation time approximation are factorially divergent and obtain hydrodynamic attractor solutions by applying the Borel resummation technique to those asymptotic divergent series. In both theories, we find that the hydrodynamic attractor solutions are globally attractive and only the first-order non-hydrodynamic mode exists. We also find that the hydrodynamic attractor solutions in the two theories disagree with each other when gradients become large, and that the speed of the attraction is different. Similarities and differences from hydrodynamic attractors in the Bjorken and Gubser flows are also discussed. High-energy heavy-ion collisions generate extremely strong magnetic field which plays a key role in a number of novel quantum phenomena in quark-gluon plasma (QGP), such as the chiral magnetic effect (CME). However, due to the complexity in theoretical modellings of the coupled electromagnetic fields and the QGP system, especially in the pre-equilibrium stages, the lifetime of the magnetic field in the QGP medium remains undetermined. We establish, for the first time, a kinetic framework to study the dynamical decay of the magnetic field in the early stages of a weakly coupled QGP by solving the coupled Boltzmann and Maxwell equations. We find that at late times a magnetohydrodynamical description of the coupled system emerges. With respect to realistic collisions at RHIC and the LHC, we estimate the residual strength of the magnetic field in the QGP when the system start to evolve hydrodynamically., Comment: 6 pages and 3 figures

We perform a systematic study of the spin polarization of hyperons in heavy-ion collisions using the MUSIC hydrodynamic model with A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) pre-equilibrium dynamics. Our model calculations nicely describe the measured collision-energy, centrality, rapidity, and $p_T$ dependence of $\Lambda$ polarization. We also study and predict the global spin polarization of $\Xi^-$ and $\Omega^-$ as a function of collision energy, which provides a baseline for the studies of the magnetic moment, spin, and mass dependence of the spin polarization. For the local spin polarization, we calculate the radial and azimuthal components of the transverse $\Lambda$ polarization and find specific modulating behavior which could reflect the circular vortical structure. However, our model fails to describe the azimuthal-angle dependence of the longitudinal and transverse $\Lambda$ polarization, which indicates that the hydrodynamic framework with the spin Cooper-Frye formula under the assumption of thermal equilibrium of spin degree of freedom needs to be improved., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

Heavy ion collisions generate strong fluid vorticty in the produced hot quark-gluon matter which could in turn induce measurable spin polarization of hadrons. We review recent progress on the vorticity formation and spin polarization in heavy ion collisions with transport models. We present an introduction to the fluid vorticity in non-relativistic and relativistic hydrodynamics and address various properties of the vorticity formed in heavy ion collisions. We discuss the spin polarization in a vortical fluid using the Wigner function formalism in which we derive the freeze-out formula for the spin polarization. We investigate the spin alignment of vector mesons arising from locally polarized quarks and anti-quarks (local spin alignment) in heavy-ion collisions. We find that $\rho_{00}\neq 1/3$ does not necessarily signal the global polarization of quarks and anti-quarks along the orbital angular momentum of the system, but may also originate from their local spin polarization. Such local spin polarization could be induced by local vorticity arising from the anisotropic expansion of the fireball. We further propose experimental observables that can distinguish between the local and the global spin alignments. We discuss phenomenological implications of the anomalous transport induced by the scale anomaly in QCD coupled to an electromagnetic (EM) field, based on a dilaton effective theory. The scale anomalous current emerges in a way perfectly analogous to the conformal transport current induced in a curved spacetime background, or the Nernst current in Dirac and Weyl semimetals -- both current forms are equivalent by a "Weyl transformation". We focus on a spatially homogeneous system of QCD hadron phase, which is expected to be created after the QCD phase transition and thermalization. We find that the EM field can induce a dynamic oscillatory dilaton field which in turn induces the scale anomalous current. As the phenomenological applications, we evaluate the dilepton and diphoton productions induced from the dynamic scale anomalous current, and find that those productions include a characteristic peak structure related to the dynamic oscillatory dilaton, which could be tested in heavy ion collisions. Rotating photon gas exhibits a chirality separation along the angular velocity which is manifested through a generation of helicity and zilch currents. In this paper we study this system using the corresponding Wigner function and construct elements of the covariant chiral kinetic theory for photons from first principles. The Wigner function is solved order-by-order in $\hbar$ and the unconstrained terms are fixed by matching with quantum field theory results. We further consider the zilch and helicity currents and show that both manifestations of the chirality transport originate in the Berry phase of photons similarly to other chiral effects. Constructing the kinetic description from the Wigner function we find that the frame vector needed to fix the definition of spin of a massless particle is, in fact, the vector of the residual gauge freedom for the free Maxwell theory. We find that the recently developed kinetic theories with spin for massive and massless fermions are smoothly connected. By introducing a reference-frame vector, we decompose the dipole-moment tensor into electric and magnetic dipole moments. We show that the axial-vector component of the Wigner function contains a contribution from the transverse magnetic dipole moment which accounts for the transverse spin degree of freedom (DOF) and vanishes smoothly in the massless limit. As a result, the kinetic equations, describing four DOF for massive fermions, becomes smoothly the chiral kinetic equations describing two DOF in the massless limit. Relativistic heavy-ion collisions create hot quark-gluon plasma as well as very strong electromagnetic (EM) and fluid vortical fields. The strong EM field and vorticity can induce intriguing macroscopic quantum phenomena such as chiral magnetic, chiral separation, chiral electric separation, and chiral vortical effects as well as the spin polarization of hadrons. These phenomena provide us with experimentally feasible means to study the nontrivial topological sector of quantum chromodynamics, the possible parity violation of strong interaction at high temperature, and the subatomic spintronics of quark-gluon plasma. These studies, both in theory and in experiments, are strongly connected with other subfields of physics such as condensed matter physics, astrophysics, and cold atomic physics, and thus form an emerging interdisciplinary research area. We give an introduction to the aforementioned phenomena induced by the EM field and vorticity and an overview of the current status of their experimental research in heavy-ion collisions. We investigate the hadron production from the vortical quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions. Based on the quark-coalescence and statistical hadronization models, we show that total hadron yields summed over the spin components are enhanced by the local vorticity with quadratic dependence. The enhancement factor amounts to be a few percent and may be detectable within current experimental sensitivities. We also show that the effect is stronger for hadrons with larger spin, and thus propose a new signature of the local vorticity, which may be detected by the yield ratio of distinct hadron species having different spins such as $\phi$ and $\eta'$. We give a theoretical perspective on the vorticity and spin polarization in heavy-ion collisions. We discuss the recent progress in spin hydrodynamics and spin kinetic theory. We develop a covariant kinetic theory for massive fermions in curved spacetime and external electromagnetic field based on quantum field theory. We calculated the azimuthal angle dependence of the local spin polarization of hyperons in 200 GeV Au+Au and 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb collisions in the framework of the (3+1)D viscous hydrodynamic model CLVisc with AMPT initial conditions encoding initial orbital angular momenta. We find that the azimuthal angle dependence of the hyperon polarization strongly depends on the choice of the spin chemical potential $\Omega_{\mu\nu}$. We study the kinematic and thermal vorticities in low-energy heavy-ion collisions by using the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model. We explore their time evolution and spatial distribution. We find that the initial vorticities have a non-monotonic dependence on the collision energy $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$: as $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ grows the vorticities first increase steeply and then decrease with the turning point around $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}\sim 3-5$ GeV depending on the centrality., Comment: V2: 5 pages, 7 figures

We revisit the condensation scenario of charged pions in external magnetic field and rotation, which was first considered by Y. Liu and I. Zahed. Based on the Ginzburg-Landau analysis of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, we find that the charged-pion condensation takes place only when both a strong coupling constant and negatively large baryon chemical potential are applied. Besides, our numerical calculation shows that the chiral restoration induced by the interplay between magnetic field and rotation (i.e., the rotational magnetic inhibition) interrupts the formation of the charged-pion condensate. This suggests that the analysis of such condensation requires a careful treatment of the inner structure of pions, which was not taken into account before. We revisit the azimuthal angle dependence of the local spin polarization of hyperons in heavy-ion collisions at 200 GeV in the framework of the (3+1)D viscous hydrodynamic model CLVisc. Two different initial conditions are considered in our simulation: the optical Glauber initial condition without initial orbital angular momentum and the AMPT initial condition with an initial orbital angular momentum. We find that the azimuthal angle dependence of the hyperon polarization strongly depends on the choice of the so-called "spin chemical potential" $\Omega_{\mu\nu}$. With $\Omega_{\mu\nu}$ chosen to be proportional to the temperature vorticity, our simulation shows qualitatively coincidental results with the recent measurements at RHIC for both the longitudinal and transverse polarization. We develop a theoretical framework to study the feed-down effect of higher-lying strange baryons on the spin polarization of the $\Lambda$ hyperon. In this framework, we consider two-body decays through strong, electromagnetic, and weak processes and derive general formulas for the angular distribution and spin polarization of the daughter particle by adopting the helicity formalism. Using the realistic experimental data as input, we explore the feed-down contribution to the global and the local $\Lambda$ polarizations and find that such a contribution suppresses the primordial $\Lambda$ polarization, which is not strong enough to resolve the discrepancy between the current theoretical and the experimental results on the azimuthal-angle dependence of $\Lambda$ polarization. Our paper may also be useful for the measurement of spin polarization of baryons heavier than $\Lambda$ (e.g., $\Xi^-$) in future experiments., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

We study electron and positron pair production from the vacuum by a strong slow electric field superimposed by a weak fast electric field pointing in an arbitrary direction as a perturbation (the dynamically assisted Schwinger mechanism). An analytical formula for the production number is derived on the basis of the perturbation theory in the Furry picture. The formula is found to be in good agreement with non-perturbative results obtained by numerically solving the Dirac equation if the perturbation is sufficiently weak and/or is not very slow. We also find analytically/numerically that the Schwinger mechanism becomes spin-dependent if the perturbation has a transverse component with respect to the strong electric field. The number difference between spin up and down particles is strongly suppressed by an exponential of the critical field strength if the frequency of the perturbation is small, while it is only weakly suppressed by powers of the critical field strength if the frequency is large enough. We show that the coherent axion field spontaneously decays by emitting axion particles via quantum tunneling if axion potential has more than one minimum. By employing the $\hbar$-expansion and mean field approximation, we develop a formalism to trace the real-time dynamics of the axion particle production including its backreaction to the coherent axion field. We also present numerical results for the time evolution of various physical quantities including the strength of the coherent axion field, phase-space density of produced axion particles, energy density, and pressure. We discuss spontaneous spin current generation from the vacuum by strong electric fields as a result of interplay between the Schwinger mechanism and a spin-orbit coupling. By considering a homogeneous slow strong electric field superimposed by a fast weak transverse electric field, we explicitly evaluate the vacuum expectation value of a spin current (the Bargmann-Wigner spin current) by numerically solving the Dirac equation. We show that a non-vanishing spin current polarized in the direction perpendicular to the electric fields flows mostly in the longitudinal direction. We show that effective coupling strengths between ungapped and gapped quarks in the two-flavor color superconducting (2SC) phase are renormalized by logarithmic quantum corrections. We obtain a set of coupled renormalization-group (RG) equations for two distinct effective coupling strengths arising from gluon exchanges carrying different color charges. The diagram of RG flow suggests that both of the coupling strengths evolve into a strong-coupling regime as we decrease the energy scale toward the Fermi surface. This is a characteristic behavior observed in the Kondo effect, which has been known to occur in the presence of impurity scatterings via non-Abelian interactions. We propose a novel Kondo effect emerging without doped impurities, but with the gapped quasiexcitations and the residual SU(2) color subgroup intrinsic in the 2SC phase, which we call the 2SC Kondo effect., Comment: Discussions added before the conclusion. We derive relativistic hydrodynamic equations with a dynamical spin degree of freedom on the basis of an entropy-current analysis. The first and second laws of local thermodynamics constrain possible structures of the constitutive relations including a spin current and the antisymmetric part of the (canonical) energy-momentum tensor. Solving the obtained hydrodynamic equations within the linear-mode analysis, we find spin-diffusion modes, indicating that spin density is damped out after a characteristic time scale controlled by transport coefficients introduced in the antisymmetric part of the energy-momentum tensor in the entropy-current analysis. Many-body systems with chiral fermions exhibit anomalous transport phenomena originated from quantum anomalies. Based on quantum field theory, we derive the kinetic theory for chiral fermions interacting with an external electromagnetic field and a background curved geometry. The resultant framework respects the covariance under the U(1) gauge, local Lorentz, and diffeomorphic transformations. It is particularly useful to study the gravitational or non-inertial effects for chiral systems. As the first application, we study the chiral dynamics in a rotating coordinate and clarify the roles of the Coriolis force and spin-vorticity coupling in generating the chiral vortical effect (CVE). The hot and dense matter generated in heavy-ion collisions contains intricate vortical structure in which the local fluid vorticity can be very large. Such vorticity can polarize the spin of the produced particles. We study the event-by-event generation of the so-called thermal vorticity in Au + Au collisions at energy region $\sqrt{s}=7.7-200$ GeV and calculate its time evolution, spatial distribution, etc., in a multiphase transport (AMPT) model. We then compute the spin polarization of the $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ hyperons as a function of $\sqrt{s}$, transverse momentum $p_T$, rapidity, and azimuthal angle. Furthermore, we study the harmonic flow of the spin, in a manner analogous to the harmonic flow of the particle number. The measurement of the spin harmonic flow may provide a way to probe the vortical structure in heavy-ion collisions. We carry out simulations using a multiphase transport (AMPT) model to describe the observed flow signatures in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV Pb-Pb collisions. Especially, we calculate the flow fluctuations of $v_2$ in terms of cumulant ratios and the standardized skewness. Based on event-by-event AMPT simulations, we study the linear and cubic response relation between $v_2$ and $\varepsilon_2$. We found that the observed response relation is compatible to what has been noticed in hydrodynamic modelings, with similar dependence on shear viscosity. Besides, this response relation is not sensitive to nonflow effects.

The spin Hall effect of light attracted enormous attention in the literature due to the ongoing progress in developing of new optically active materials and metamaterials with non-trivial spin-orbit interaction. Recently, it was shown that rotating fermionic systems with relativistic massless spectrum may exhibit a 3d analogue of the spin Hall current -- the chiral vortical effect (CVE). Here we show that CVE is a general feature of massless particles with an arbitrary spin. We derive the semi-classical equations of motion in rotating frame from the first principles and show how by coordinate transformation in the phase space it can be brought to the intuitive form proposed in [1]. Our finding clarifies the superficial discrepancies in different formulations of the chiral kinetic theory for rotating systems. We then generalize the chiral kinetic theory, originally introduced for fermions, to an arbitrary spin and study chirality current in a general rotating chiral medium. We stress that the higher-spin realizations of CVE can be in principle observed in various setups including table-top experiments on quantum optics., Comment: 17 pages, references updated
