Chiral metasurfaces provide invaluable tools capable of controlling structured light required for biosensing, photochemistry, holography, and quantum photonics. Here we suggest and realize a universal strategy for controlling the chiral response of resonant metasurfaces via the interplay of meta-atom geometry and lattice arrangements within all five possible planar Bravais symmetries. By introducing chiral gradient metasurfaces, we illustrate how our approach allows producing a predictable chiral response tunable by simple parameter variations. We highlight that symmetry-controlled chiral response provides an additional degree of freedom in optical signal processing, and showcase this with simultaneous mid-IR image encoding in two fundamental quantities, transmission and circular dichroism. Our proposed concept represents a universal toolkit for on-demand design and control of chiral metastructures that has potential for numerous applications in life sciences, quantum optics and more.

We generalize the concept of optical scattering matrix ($S$-matrix) to characterize harmonic generation and frequency mixing in planar metasurfaces in the limit of undepleted pump approximation. We show that the symmetry properties of such nonlinear $S$-matrix are determined by the microscopic and macroscopic symmetries of the metasurface. We demonstrate that for description of degenerate frequency mixing processes such as optical harmonic generation, the multidimensional $S$-matrix can be replaced with a reduced two-dimensional $S$-matrix. We show that for metasurfaces possessing specific point group symmetries, the selection rules determining the transformation of the reduced nonlinear $S$-matrix are simplified substantially and can be expressed in a compact form. We apply the developed approach to analyse chiral harmonic generation in nonlinear metasurfaces with various symmetries including rotational, in-plane mirror, and out-of-plane mirror symmetries. For each of those symmetries, we confirm the results of the developed analysis by full-wave numerical calculations. The presence of topological edge modes at the interface of two perturbed honeycomb photonic crystals with $C_6$ symmetry is often attributed to the different signs of Berry curvature at the K and K$'$ valleys. In contrast to the electronic counterpart, the Chern number defined in photonic valley Hall effect is not a quantized quantity but can be tuned to finite values including zero simply by changing geometrical perturbations. Here, we argue that the edge modes in photonic valley Hall effect can exist even when Berry curvature vanishes. We numerically demonstrate the presence of the zero-Berry-curvature edge modes in triangular lattice photonic crystal slab structures in which $C_3$ symmetry is maintained but inversion symmetry is broken. We investigate the evolution of the Berry curvature from the honeycomb-lattice photonic crystal slab to the triangular-lattice photonic crystal slab and show that the triangular-lattice photonic crystals still support edge modes in a very wide photonic bandgap. Growing interest in devices based on layered van der Waals (vdW) materials is motivating the development of new nanofabrication methods. Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is one of the most promising materials for studies of quantum photonics and polaritonics. Here, we report in detail on a promising nanofabrication processes used to fabricate several hBN photonic devices using a hybrid electron beam induced etching (EBIE) and reactive ion etching (RIE) technique. We highlight the shortcomings and benefits of RIE and EBIE and demonstrate the utility of the hybrid approach for the fabrication of suspended and supported device structures with nanoscale features and highly vertical sidewalls. Functionality of the fabricated devices is proven by measurements of high quality cavity optical modes (Q~1500). Our nanofabrication approach constitutes an advance towards an integrated, monolithic quantum photonics platform based on hBN and other layered vdW materials.

The effects of Fano resonance on the optical chirality of planar plasmonic nanodevices in the visible wavelength range are experimentally observed and theoretically explained. The nanodevice consists of a nanodisk at the center with six gold nanorods with an orientation angle to exhibit optical chirality under dark-field illumination. The chiral response induced by the gold nanorods are affected by the presence of the nanodisk with different diameters which causes Fano resonance. An intriguing change to the opposite selection preference of different handedness of the circularly polarized light has been clearly observed experimentally. This change of the preference is understood based on the extended coupled oscillator model. Moreover, electrostatic analysis and the time-dependent simulations provide a further understanding of the phenomenon. The observed and understood effects of Fano resonance on optical chirality enables effective manipulation of chiral characteristics of planar subwavelength nanodevices.

Dark-field illumination is shown to make planar chiral nanoparticle arrangements exhibit circular dichroism in extinction analogous to true chiral scatterers. Circular dichrosim is experimentally observed at the maximum scattering of single oligomers consisting rotationally symmetric arrangements of gold nanorods, with strong agreement to numerical simulation. A dipole model is developed to show that this effect is caused by a difference in the geometric projection of a nanorod onto the handed orientation of electric fields created by a circularly polarized dark-field that is normally incident on a glass substrate. Owing to this geometric origin, the wavelength of the peak chiral response is also experimentally shown to shift depending on the separation between nanoparticles. All presented oligomers have physical dimensions less than the operating wavelength, and the applicable extension to closely packed planar arrays of oligomers is demonstrated to amplify the magnitude of circular dichroism. The realization of strong chirality in these oligomers demonstrates a new path to engineer optical chirality from planar devices using dark-field illumination.

We consider periodic arrangements of metal nanostructures and study the effect of periodicity on the localised surface plasmon resonance of the structures within an electrostatic eigenmode approximation. We show that within this limit, the collective surface plasmon resonances of the periodic structures can be expressed in terms of superpositions of the eigenmodes of uncoupled nanostructures that exhibit a standing--wave character delocalised across the entire periodic structure. The formalism derived successfully enables the design and accounts for the observation of plasmonic edge-states in periodic structures.
