Search

Design of photonic crystals having large bandgaps above a prescribed band is a well-known physical problem with many applications. A connection to an interesting mathematical construction was pointed out some time ago: it had been conjectured that optimal structures for gaps between bands n and n+1 correspond, in case of transverse magnetic polarisation, to rods located at the generators of centroidal Voronoi tessellation (CVT), and in case of transverse electric polarisation to the walls of this tessellation. We discover another mathematical receipt which produces even better solutions: optimal packing of discs in square and triangular tori. It provides solutions qualitatively different from CVT, sometimes increasing the resulting bandgap size in several times. We therefore introduce two new classes of periodic structures with remarkable properties which may find applications in many other areas of modern solid state physics: arrays of particles located at the centers of optimally packed discs on tori, and nets corresponding to the walls of their Voronoi tessellations., Comment: 11 pages. The explanation of the basic acoustic properties of crystals requires a recognition of the acoustic axes. To derive the acoustic axes in a given material, one requires both a workable method and the necessary and sufficient criteria for the existence of the acoustic axes in a partial propagation direction. We apply the reduced form of the acoustic tensor to the acoustic axis conditions in the present work. Using this tensor, we obtain in a compact form, allowing for qualitative analysis, the necessary and sufficient criteria for the existence of the acoustic axis. Furthermore, the well-known Khatkevich criteria and their variants are recast in terms of the reduced acoustic tensor. This paper's primary input is an alternate minimal polynomial-based system of acoustic axes conditions. In this approach, we derive an additional characteristic of acoustic axes: the directions in which the minimal polynomial of the third order is reduced to that of the second order. Next, we offer a general solution to the second-order minimum polynomial equation, that utilizes a scalar and a unit vector for defining the acoustic tensor along the acoustic axis. It is shown that the scalar matches the eigenvalue of the reduced acoustic tensor, and the vector corresponds to the polarization into the single eigenvalue direction. We use the minimal polynomial construction to demonstrate the equivalence of different acoustic axis criteria. We demonstrate the applicability of this approach to actual computations of the acoustic axes and their fundamental properties (phase speeds and polarizations) for high symmetry cases, such as isotropic materials and RTHC crystals.

Success of machine learning (ML) in the modern world is largely determined by abundance of data. However at many industrial and scientific problems, amount of data is limited. Application of ML methods to data-scarce scientific problems can be made more effective via several routes, one of them is equivariant neural networks possessing knowledge of symmetries. Here we suggest that combination of symmetry-aware invariant architectures and stacks of dilated convolutions is a very effective and easy to implement receipt allowing sizable improvements in accuracy over standard approaches. We apply it to representative physical problems from different realms: prediction of bandgaps of photonic crystals, and network approximations of magnetic ground states. The suggested invariant multiscale architectures increase expressibility of networks, which allow them to perform better in all considered cases., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

Acoustic axes are spatial directions in media (often crystals) where at least two of the three acoustic waves have the same phase velocity. Identification of such directions for materials with specific elasticity parameters is both theoretically fascinating and practical in acoustic applications. In this paper, we introduce the notion of the reduced acoustic tensor. In contrast to the ordinary Cristoffel's tensor, this tensor is traceless. Then it has only five independent components and fulfills the depressed cubic characteristic equation. We show that the conditions for the existence of an acoustic axes in a given propagation direction are determined solely by the reduced acoustic tensor. The necessary and sufficient conditions takes a simple compact invariant form. We also present the expression for the wave velocities along the acoustic axis. The conditions for the oblate/prolate types of the axis are derived in terms of reduced acoustic tensor.

The Cauchy relations distinguish between rari- and multi-constant linear elasticity theories. These relations are treated in this paper in a form that is invariant under two groups of transformations: indices permutation and general linear transformations of the basis. The irreducible decomposition induced by the permutation group is outlined. The Cauchy relations are then formulated as a requirement of nullification of an invariant subspace. A successive decomposition under rotation group allows to define the partial Cauchy relations and two types of elastic materials. We explore several applications of the full and partial Cauchy relations in physics of materials. The structure's deviation from the basic physical assumptions of Cauchy's model is defined in an invariant form. The Cauchy and non-Cauchy contributions to Hooke's law and elasticity energy are explained. We identify wave velocities and polarization vectors that are independent of the non-Cauchy part for acoustic wave propagation. A variational derivative of a Lagrangian with regard to the metric tensor is used in classical field models to define Hilbert's energy-momentum tensor for a matter field. In solid-state physics, constitutive relationships between fundamental field variables are a topic that is covered by a broad variety of models. In this context, a constitutive tensor of higher order replaces the of the second-order metric tensor. For the classical field models of gravity and electrodynamics, a similar premetric description with a linear constitutive relation has recently presented. In this paper, we analyze the extension of the Hilbert definition of the energy-momentum tensor to models with general linear constitutive law. Differential forms are required for the covariant treatment of integrals on a differential manifold. The Lagrangian, electromagnetic current, and energy-momentum current must all be represented as twisted 4-forms, 3-forms, and vector-valued 3-forms, respectively. For an arbitrary linear map on forms, we derive a commutative variation identity that allows direct variation procedures without having to deal with the individual components. One can deal with Maxwell-type Lagrangians in any dimension by restricting the linear map to the generalized Hodge dual map (constitutive law). The Hilbert energy-momentum current, which is defined as a variation derivative of the Lagrangian with regard to a coframe field, is derived in differential form. It is demonstrated that the commutative variation identity is closely connected to the explicit form of the energy-momentum current. This construction is applied to a number of field models having a general linear constitutive law.

An extension of Riemmann's geometry into a direction dependent geometric structure is usually described by Finsler's geometry. Historically, this construction was motivated by the well-known Riemann's quartic length element example. Quite surprisingly, the same quartic expression emerges in solid-state electrodynamics as a basic dispersion relation -- covariant Fresnel equation. Consequently, Riemann's quartic length expression can be interpreted as a mathematical model of a well-established physics phenomena. In this paper, we present various examples of Riemann's quartic that demonstrate that Finsler's geometry is too restrictive even in the case of a positive definite Euclidean signature space. In the case of the spaces endowed with an indefinite (Minkowski) signature, there are much more singular hypersurfaces where the strong axioms of Finsler's geometry are broken down. We propose a weaker definition of Finsler's structure that is required to be satisfied only on open subsets of the tangent bundle. We exhibit the characteristic singular hypersurfaces related to Riemann's quartic and briefly discuss their possible physical interpretation.

Third-order tensors are widely used as a mathematical tool for modeling physical properties of media in solid state physics. In most cases, they arise as constitutive tensors of proportionality between basic physics quantities. The constitutive tensor can be considered as a complete set of physical parameters of a medium. The algebraic features of the constitutive tensor can be seen as a tool for proper identification of natural material, as crystals, and for design the artificial nano-materials with prescribed properties. In this paper, we study the algebraic properties of a generic 3-rd order tensor relative to its invariant decomposition. In a correspondence to different groups acted on the basic vector space, we present the hierarchy of types of tensor decomposition into invariant subtensors. In particular, we discuss the problem of non-uniqueness and reducibility of high-order tensor decomposition. For a generic 3-rd order tensor, these features are described explicitly. In the case of special tensors of a prescribed symmetry, the decomposition turns out to be irreducible and unique. We present the explicit results for two physically interesting models: the piezoelectric tensor as an example of a pair symmetry and the Hall tensor as an example of a pair skew-symmetry.

In linear elasticity, a fourth order elasticity (stiffness) tensor of 21 independent components completely describes deformation properties of a material. Due to Voigt, this tensor is conventionally represented by a $6\times 6$ symmetric matrix. This classical matrix representation does not conform with the irreducible decomposition of the elasticity tensor. In this paper, we construct two alternative matrix representations. The $3\times 7$ matrix representation is in a correspondence with the permutation transformations of indices and with the general linear transformation of the basis. An additional representation of the elasticity tensor by three $3\times 3$ matrices is suitable for description the irreducible decomposition under the rotation transformations. We present the elasticity tensor of all crystal systems in these compact matrix forms and construct the hierarchy diagrams based on this representation.

We continue to investigate the premetric teleparallel theory of gravity (TG) with the coframe (tetrad) as gravitational potential. We start from the field equations and a local and linear constitutive law. We create a Tonti diagram of TG in order to disclose the structure of TG. Subsequently we irreducibly decompose the 6th order constitutive tensor under the linear group. Moreover, we construct the most general constitutive tensors from the metric and the totally antisymmetric Levi-Civita symbol, and we demonstrate that they encompass nontrivial axion and skewon type pieces. Using these tools, we derive for TG in the geometric-optics approximation propagating massless spin 0, 1, and 2 waves, including the special case of Einstein's general relativity., Comment: 54 pages, 2 figures, Latex

Nonlinear phononics play important role in strong laser-solid interactions. We discuss nonlinear dynamical protocols which allow for efficient excitation and control of nonlinear phonons. We consider recent inspiring proposals: inducing ferroelectricity in paraelectric material such as KTaO$_3$ and inducing structural deformations in cuprates like La$_2$CuO$_4$ [A. Subedi et.al, Phys. Rev. B 89,220301 (2014), A.Subedi, Phys. Rev. B 95, 134113 (2017)]. High-frequency phonon modes are driven by mid-infrared pulses, and coupled to lower-frequency modes those indirect excitation causes structural deformations. Such proposals are in line with a series of recent experiments on light-induced phase transitions. We study in a more detail the case of KTaO$_3$ without strain, where (at first glance) it was not possible to excite the needed low frequency phonon mode by resonant driving of the higher frequency one. Behaviour of the phonon system is explained using a reduced model of coupled driven nonlinear oscillators. We find a dynamical mechanism which prevents effective excitation at resonance driving, and show that for certain detunings of driving frequency from the exact resonance the system response is, counterintuitively, greatly amplified. In order to induce ferroelectricity in KTaO$_3$ without a strain we employ driving with sweeping frequency, realizing so called capture into resonance. The method works for realistic femtosecond pulses. Our approach can be applied to other related systems, e.g. laser driven orthorombic perovskites like ErFeO$_3$., Comment: Minor amendments; comments are welcome

In general relativity (GR), the metric tensor of spacetime is essential since it represents the gravitational potential. In other gauge theories (such as electromagnetism), the so-called premetric approach succeeds in separating the purely topological field equation from the metric-dependent constitutive law. We show here that GR allows for a premetric formulation, too. For this purpose, we apply the teleparallel approach of gravity, which represents GR as a gauge theory based on the translation group. We formulate the metric-free topological field equation and a general linear constitutive law between the basic field variables. The requirement of local Lorentz invariance turns the model into a full equivalent of GR. In 1922, Kottler put forward the program to remove the gravitational potential, the metric of spacetime, from the fundamental equations in physics as far as possible. He successfully applied this idea to Newton's gravitostatics and to Maxwell's electrodynamics, where Kottler recast the field equations in premetric form and specified a metric-dependent constitutive law. We will discuss the basics of the premetric approach and some of its beautiful consequences, like the division of universal constants into two classes. We show that classical electrodynamics can be developed without a metric quite straightforwardly: the Maxwell equations, together with a local and linear response law for electromagnetic media, admit a consistent premetric formulation. Kottler's program succeeds here without provisos. In Kottler's approach to gravity, making the theory relativistic, two premetric quasi-Maxwellian field equations arise, but their field variables, if interpreted in terms of general relativity, do depend on the metric. We study dynamics of fermions loaded in an optical lattice with a superimposed parabolic trap potential. In the recent Hamburg experiments [J.Heinze et.al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 085302 (2013)] on quantum simulation of photoconductivity, a modulation pulse on the optical lattice transferred part of the population of the lowest band to an excited band, leaving a hole in the particle distribution of the lowest band. Subsequent intricate dynamics of both excited particles and holes can be explained by a semiclassical approach based on the evolution of Wigner function. Here we provide a more detailed analysis of the dynamics taking into account the dimensionality of the system and finite temperature effects, aiming at reproducing experimental results on longer timescales. A semiclassical wave packet is constructed more accurately than in the previous theory. As a result, semiclassical dynamics indeed reproduces experimental data and full quantum numerical calculations with much better accuracy. In particular, fascinating phenomenon of collapse and revival of holes is investigated in a more detail. We presume the experimental setup can be used for deeper exploration of nonlinear waves in fermionic gases.

In the recent decades, it became more and more popular for engineers, physicists, and mathematicians alike to put the Maxwell equations into a generally covariant form. This is particularly useful for understanding the fundamental structure of electrodynamics (conservation of electric charge and magnetic flux). Moreover, it is ideally suited for applying it to media with local (and mainly linear) response behavior. We try to collect the new knowledge that grew out of this development. Electrodynamics with a local and linear constitutive law is used as a framework for models violating Lorentz covariance. The constitutive tensor of such a construction is irreducibly decomposed into three independent pieces. The principal part is the anisotropic generalisation of the standard electrodynamics. The two other parts, axion and skewon, represent non-classical modifications of electrodynamics. We derive the expression for the photon propagator in the Minkowski spacetime endowed with a skewon field. For a relatively small (antisymmetric) skewon field, a modified Coulom law is exhibited.

We study the quadratic invariants of the elasticity tensor in the framework of its unique irreducible decomposition. The key point is that this decomposition generates the direct sum reduction of the elasticity tensor space. The corresponding subspaces are completely independent and even orthogonal relative to the Euclidean (Frobenius) scalar product. We construct a basis set of seven quadratic invariants that emerge in a natural and systematic way. Moreover, the completeness of this basis and the independence of the basis tensors follow immediately from the direct sum representation of the elasticity tensor space. We define the Cauchy factor of an anisotropic material as a dimensionless measure of a closeness to a pure Cauchy material and a similar isotropic factor is as a measure for a closeness of an anisotropic material to its isotropic prototype. For cubic crystals, these factors are explicitly displayed and cubic crystal average of an arbitrary elastic material is derived.

We study properties of the fourth rank elasticity tensor C within linear elasticity theory. First C is irreducibly decomposed under the linear group into a "Cauchy piece" S (with 15 independent components) and a "non-Cauchy piece" A (with 6 independent components). Subsequently, we turn to the physically relevant orthogonal group, thereby using the metric. We find the finer decomposition of S into pieces with 9+5+1 and of A into those with 5+1 independent components. Some reducible decompositions, discussed earlier by numerous authors, are shown to be inconsistent. --- Several physical consequences are discussed. The Cauchy relations are shown to correspond to A=0. Finsler geometry is a natural generalization of pseudo-Riemannian geometry. It can be motivated e.g. by a modified version of the Ehlers-Pirani-Schild axiomatic approach to space-time theory. Also, some scenarios of quantum gravity suggest a modified dispersion relation which could be phrased in terms of Finsler geometry. On a Finslerian spacetime, the Universality of Free Fall is still satisfied but Local Lorentz Invariance is violated in a way not covered by standard Lorentz Invariance Violation schemes. In this paper we consider a Finslerian modification of Maxwell's equations. The corrections to the Coulomb potential and to the hydrogen energy levels are computed. We find that the Finsler metric corrections yield a splitting of the energy levels. Experimental data provide bounds for the Finsler parameters., Comment: 10 pages; minor changes

Electromagnetic media with generic linear response provide a rich class of Lorentz violation models. In the framework of a general covariant metric-free approach, we study electromagnetic wave propagation in these media. We define the notion of an optic tensor and present its unique canonical irreducible decomposition into the principle and skewon parts. The skewon contribution to the Minkowski vacuum is a subject that does not arise in the ordinary models of Lorentz violation based on a modified Lagrangian. We derive the covector parametrization of the skewon optic tensor and discuss its $U(1)$-gauge symmetry. We obtain several compact expressions for the contribution of the principle and skewon optic tensor to the dispersion relation. As an application of the technique proposed here, we consider the case of a generic skewon tensor contributed to a simple metric-type principle part. Our main result: Every solution of the skewon modified Minkowski dispersion relation is necessary spacelike or null. It provides an extreme violation of the Lorentz symmetry. The case of the antisymmetric skewon is studied in detail and some new special cases (electric, magnetic, and degenerate) are discovered. In the case of a skewon represented by a symmetric matrix, we observe a parametric gap that has some similarity to the Higgs model. We worked out a set of specific examples that justify the generic properties of the skewon models and demonstrate the different types of the Lorentz violation phenomena.

In the framework of standard electrodynamics with linear local response, we construct a model that provides spontaneously broken transparency. The functional dependence of the medium parameter turns out to be of the Higgs type., Comment: 3 pages, 5 figures

A generally covariant four-dimensional representation of Maxwell's electrodynamics in a generic material medium can be achieved straightforwardly in the metric-free formulation of electromagnetism. In this setup, the electromagnetic phenomena described by two tensor fields, which satisfy Maxwell's equations. A generic tensorial constitutive relation between these fields is an independent ingredient of the theory. By use of different constitutive relations (local and non-local, linear and non-linear, etc.), a wide area of applications can be covered. In the current paper, we present the jump conditions for the fields and for the energy-momentum tensor on an arbitrarily moving surface between two media. From the differential and integral Maxwell equations, we derive the covariant boundary conditions, which are independent of any metric and connection. These conditions include the covariantly defined surface current and are applicable to an arbitrarily moving smooth curved boundary surface. As an application of the presented jump formulas, we derive a Lorentzian type metric as a condition for existence the wave front in isotropic media. This result holds for the ordinary materials as well as for the metamaterials with the negative material constants.

Guided by results in the premetric electrodynamics of local and linear media, we introduce on 4-dimensional spacetime the new abstract notion of a Kummer tensor density of rank four, ${\cal K}^{ijkl}$. This tensor density is, by definition, a cubic algebraic functional of a tensor density of rank four ${\cal T}^{ijkl}$, which is antisymmetric in its first two and its last two indices: ${\cal T}^{ijkl} = - {\cal T}^{jikl} = - {\cal T}^{ijlk}$. Thus, ${\cal K}\sim {\cal T}^3$, see Eq.(46). (i) If $\cal T$ is identified with the electromagnetic response tensor of local and linear media, the Kummer tensor density encompasses the generalized {\it Fresnel wave surfaces} for propagating light. In the reversible case, the wave surfaces turn out to be {\it Kummer surfaces} as defined in algebraic geometry (Bateman 1910). (ii) If $\cal T$ is identified with the {\it curvature} tensor $R^{ijkl}$ of a Riemann-Cartan spacetime, then ${\cal K}\sim R^3$ and, in the special case of general relativity, ${\cal K}$ reduces to the Kummer tensor of Zund (1969). This $\cal K$ is related to the {\it principal null directions} of the curvature. We discuss the properties of the general Kummer tensor density. We consider a single particle tunnelling in a tight-binding model with nearest-neighbour couplings, in the presence of a periodic high-frequency force. An effective Hamiltonian for the particle is derived using an averaging method resembling classical canonical perturbation theory. Three cases are considered: uniform lattice with periodic and open boundary conditions, and lattice with a parabolic potential. We find that in the latter case, interplay of the potential and driving leads to appearence of the effective next-nearest neighbour couplings. In the uniform case with periodic boundary conditions the second- and third-order corrections to the averaged Hamiltonian are completely absent, while in the case with open boundary conditions they have a very simple form, found before in some particular cases by S.Longhi [Phys. Rev. B 77, 195326 (2008)]. We consider 1D lattices described by Hubbard or Bose-Hubbard models, in the presence of periodic high-frequency perturbations, such as uniform ac force or modulation of hopping coefficients. Effective Hamiltonians for interacting particles are derived using an averaging method resembling classical canonical perturbation theory. As is known, a high-frequency force may renormalize hopping coefficients, causing interesting phenomena such as coherent destruction of tunnelling and creation of artificial gauge fields. We find explicitly additional corrections to the effective Hamiltonians due to interactions, corresponding to non-trivial processes such as single-particle density-dependent tunnelling, correlated pair hoppings, nearest neighbour interactions, etc. Some of these processes arise also in multiband lattice models, and are capable to give rise to a rich variety of quantum phases. The apparent contradiction with other methods, e.g. Floquet-Magnus expansion, is explained. The results may be useful for designing effective Hamiltonian models in experiments with ultracold atoms, as well as in the field of ultrafast nonequilibrium magnetism. An example of manipulating exchange interaction in a Mott-Hubbard insulator is considered, where our corrections play an essential role.

Axion modification of the electrodynamics can be considered as produced by an irreducible part of the constitutive pseudotensor. In this paper, we study the modification of wave propagation produced by the second irreducible part called skewon. We introduce the notions of skewon optic tensor and skewon optic covector. With these devices we prove that in a pseudo-Riemannian manifold endowed with an arbitrary skewon at least one solution of the dispersion relation is spacelike. This means that the skewon generates superluminal wave motion and is thus ruled out on the basis of SR principles., Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev. D

We report on the experimental observation of an analog to a persistent alternating photocurrent in an ultracold gas of fermionic atoms in an optical lattice. The dynamics is induced and sustained by an external harmonic confinement. While particles in the excited band exhibit long-lived oscillations with a momentum dependent frequency a strikingly different behavior is observed for holes in the lowest band. An initial fast collapse is followed by subsequent periodic revivals. Both observations are fully explained by mapping the system onto a nonlinear pendulum., Comment: 5+7 pages, 4+4 figures

In linear anisotropic elasticity, the elastic properties of a medium are described by the fourth rank elasticity tensor C. The decomposition of C into a partially symmetric tensor M and a partially antisymmetric tensors N is often used in the literature. An alternative, less well-known decomposition, into the completely symmetric part S of C plus the reminder A, turns out to be irreducible under the 3-dimensional general linear group. We show that the SA-decomposition is unique, irreducible, and preserves the symmetries of the elasticity tensor. The MN-decomposition fails to have these desirable properties and is such inferior from a physical point of view. Various applications of the SA-decomposition are discussed: the Cauchy relations (vanishing of A), the non-existence of elastic null Lagrangians, the decomposition of the elastic energy and of the acoustic wave propagation. The acoustic or Christoffel tensor is split in a Cauchy and a non-Cauchy part. The Cauchy part governs the longitudinal wave propagation. We provide explicit examples of the effectiveness of the SA-decomposition. We analyze the dynamics of a classical particle in a spatially periodic potential under the influence of a periodic in time uniform force. It was shown in [S.Flach, O.Yevtushenko, Y. Zolotaryuk, Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 2358 (2000)] that despite zero average force, directed transport is possible in the system. Asymptotic description of this phenomenon for the case of slow driving was developed in [X. Leoncini, A. Neishtadt, A. Vasiliev, Phys. Rev. E 79, 026213 (2009)]. Here we consider the case of fast driving using canonical perturbation theory. An asymptotic formula is derived for the average drift velocity as a function of the system parameters and the driving law. We show that directed transport arises in an effective Hamiltonian that does not possess chaotic dynamics, thereby clarifying the relation between chaos and transport in the system. We consider a slowly rotating rectangular billiard with moving boundaries and use the canonical perturbation theory to describe the dynamics of a billiard particle. We analyze the spectrum of the 3-site Bose-Hubbard model with periodic boundary conditions using a semiclassical method. The Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization is applied to an effective classical Hamiltonian which we derive using resonance normal form theory. The derivation takes into account the 1:1 resonance between frequencies of a linearized classical system, and brings nonlinear terms into a corresponding normal form. The obtained expressions reproduce the exact low-energy spectrum of the system remarkably well even for a small number of particles N corresponding to fillings of just two particles per site. A compact and elegant description of the electromagnetic fields in media and in vacuum is attained in the differential forms formalism. This description is explicitly invariant under diffeomorphisms of the spacetime so it is suitable for arbitrary curvilinear coordinates. Moreover, it is independent of the geometry of the underline spacetime. The bulk electric charge and current densities are represented by twisted non-singular differential 3-forms. The charge and current densities with a support on the low dimensional submanifolds (surfaces, strings and points) naturally require singular differential forms. In this paper, we present a covariant metric-free description of the surface, string and point densities. It is shown that a covariant description requires Dirac's delta-forms instead of delta-functions. Covariant metric-free conservation laws for the low-dimensional densities are derived.

Da Rocha and Rodigues (RR) claim (i) that in classical electrodynamics in vector calculus the distinction between polar and axial vectors and in exterior calculus between twisted and untwisted forms is inappropriate and superfluous, and (ii) that they can derive the Lorentz force equation from Maxwell's equations. As to (i), we point out that the distinction of polar/axial and twisted/untwisted derives from the property of the electric charge of being a pure scalar, that is, not carrying any screw sense. Therefore, the mentioned distinctions are necessary ingredients in any fundamental theory of electrodynamics. If one restricted the allowed coordinate transformations to those with positive Jacobian determinants (or prescribed an equivalent constraint), then the RR scheme could be accommodated; however, such a restriction is illegal since electrodynamics is, in fact, also covariant under transformations with negative Jacobians. As to (ii), the "derivation" of the Lorentz force from Maxwell's equations, we point out that RR forgot to give the symbol F (the field strength) in Maxwell's equations an operational meaning in the first place. The electromagnetic wave propagation in an anisotropic dielectric media with two generic matrices $\epsilon^{ij}$ and $\mu^{ij}$ of permittivity and permeability is studied. These matrices are not required to be symmetric, positive definite, and even invertible. In the framework of a metric-free electrodynamics approach, compact tensorial dispersion relation is derived. The resulted formula are useful for a theoretical study of electromagnetic wave propagation in a classical media and in a modern type of media with a generic linear constitutive relation including metamaterials.

The premetric approach to electrodynamics provides a unified description of a wide class of electromagnetic phenomena. In particular, it involves axion, dilaton and skewon modifications of the classical electrodynamics. This formalism emerges also when the non-minimal coupling between the electromagnetic tensor and the torsion of Einstein-Cartan gravity is considered. Moreover, the premetric formalism can serve as a general covariant background of the electromagnetic properties of anisotropic media. In the current paper, we study wave propagation in the premetric electrodynamics. We derive a system of characteristic equations corresponded to premetric generalization of the Maxwell equation. This singular system is characterized by the adjoint matrix which turns to be of a very special form -- proportional to a scalar quartic factor. We prove that a necessary condition for existence a non-trivial solution of the characteristic system is expressed by a unique scalar dispersion relation. In the tangential (momentum) space, it determines a fourth order light hypersurface which replaces the ordinary light cone of the standard Maxwell theory. We derive an explicit form of the covariant dispersion relation and establish it'salgebraic and physical origin.

We consider dynamics of a slowly time-dependent Dicke model, which represents a many-body generalization of the Landau-Zener model. In particular, the model describes narrow Feshbach resonance passage in an ultracold gas of Fermi atoms. Adiabaticity is destroyed when a parameter crosses a critical value, even at very slow sweeping rates of a parameter. The dynamics crucially depends on direction of the sweep. We apply our recent analysis [A.P. Itin, P. Torma, arXiv:0901.4778v1] to the "inverse" sweep through the resonance, corresponding (in a context of Feshbach resonance passage) to dissociation of molecules. On a level of the mean-field approximation, the dynamics is equivalent to a molecular condensate formation from Bose atoms within a two-mode model. Formation of stationary 3D wave patterns generated by a small point-like impurity moving through a Bose-Einstein condensate with supersonic velocity is studied. Asymptotic formulae for a stationary far-field density distribution are obtained. Comparison with three-dimensional numerical simulations demonstrates that these formulae are accurate enough already at distances from the obstacle equal to a few wavelengths., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We consider dynamics of Dicke models, with and without counterrotating terms, under slow variations of parameters which drive the system through a quantum phase transition. The model without counterrotating terms and sweeped detuning is seen in the contexts of a many-body generalization of the Landau-Zener model and the dynamical passage through a second-order quantum phase transition (QPT). Adiabaticity is destroyed when the parameter crosses a critical value. Applying semiclassical analysis based on concepts of classical adiabatic invariants and mapping to the second Painleve equation (PII), we derive a formula which accurately describes particle distributions in the Hilbert space at wide range of parameters and initial conditions of the system. We find striking universal features in the particle distributions which can be probed in an experiment on Feshbach resonance passage or a cavity QED experiment. The dynamics is found to be crucially dependent on the direction of the sweep. The model with counterrotating terms has been realized recently in an experiment with ultracold atomic gases in a cavity. Its semiclassical dynamics is described by a Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom. Passage through a QPT corresponds to passage through a bifurcation, and can also be described by PII (after averaging over fast variables), leading to similar universal distributions. Minkowski's concept of a four-dimensional physical space is a central paradigm of modern physics. The three-dimensional Maxwellian electrodynamics is uniquely generalized to the covariant four-dimensional form. Is the (1+3) decomposition of the covariant four-dimensional form unique? How do the different sign assumptions of electrodynamics emerge from this decomposition? Which of these assumptions are fundamental and which of them may be modified? How does the Minkowski space-time metric emerge from this preliminary metric-free construction? In this paper we are looking for answers to the problems mentioned. Our main result is the derivation of four different possible sets of electrodynamic equations which may occur in different types of isotropic electromagnetic media. The wave propagation in each of these media is described by the Minkowskian optical metrics. Moreover, the electric and magnetic energies are nonnegative in all cases. We also show that the correct directions of the Lorentz force (as a consequence of the Dufay and the Lenz rules) hold true for all these cases. However, the differences between these four types of media must have a physical meaning. We study dynamics of a two-color photoassociation of atoms into diatomic molecules via nonlinear Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) process. This system has a famous counterpart in (linear) quantum mechanics, and been discussed recently in the context of generalizing quantum adiabatic theorem to nonlinear systems. Here we use another approach to study adiabaticity and stability in the system: we apply methods of classical Hamiltonian dynamics. The possible extensions of GR for description of fermions on a curved space, for supergravity and for loop quantum gravity require a richer set of 16 independent variables. These variables can be assembled in a coframe field, i.e., a local set of four linearly independent 1-forms. In the ordinary formulation, the coframe gravity does not have any connection to a specific geometry even being constructed from the geometrical meaningful objects. A geometrization of the coframe gravity is an aim of this paper. We construct a complete class of the coframe connections which are linear in the first order derivatives of the coframe field on an $n$ dimensional manifolds with and without a metric. The subclasses of the torsion-free, metric-compatible and flat connections are derived. We also study the behavior of the geometrical structures under local transformations of the coframe. The remarkable fact is an existence of a subclass of connections which are invariant when the infinitesimal transformations satisfy the Maxwell-like system of equations. In the framework of the coframe geometry construction, we propose a geometrical action for the coframe gravity. It is similar to the Einstein-Hilbert action of GR, but the scalar curvature is constructed from the general coframe connection. We show that this geometric Lagrangian is equivalent to the coframe Lagrangian up to a total derivative term. Moreover there is a family of coframe connections which Lagrangian does not include the higher order terms at all. The axion modified electrodynamics is usually used as a model for description of possible violation of Lorentz invariance in field theory. The low-energy manifestation of Lorentz violation can hopefully be observed in experiments with the electromagnetic waves. It justifies the importance of study how a small axion addition can modify the wave propagation. Although a constant axion does not contribute to the dispersion relation at all, even a slowly varying axion field destroys the light cone structure. In this paper, we study the wave propagation in the axion modified electrodynamics in the framework of premetric approach. In an addition to the modified dispersion relation, we derive the axion generalization of the photon propagator in Feynman and Landau gauge. Our consideration is free from the usual restriction of a usual restriction to the constant gradient axion field. It is remarkable that the axion modified propagator is hermitian. In this paper, the axion contribution to the electromagnetic wave propagation is studied. First we show how the axion electrodynamics model can be embedded into a premetric formalism of Maxwell electrodynamics. In this formalism, the axion field is not an arbitrary added Chern-Simon term of the Lagrangian, but emerges in a natural way as an irreducible part of a general constitutive tensor.We show that in order to represent the axion contribution to the wave propagation it is necessary to go beyond the geometric approximation, which is usually used in the premetric formalism. We derive a covariant dispersion relation for the axion modified electrodynamics. The wave propagation in this model is studied for an axion field with timelike, spacelike and null derivative covectors. The birefringence effect emerges in all these classes as a signal of Lorentz violation. This effect is however completely different from the ordinary birefringence appearing in classical optics and in premetric electrodynamics. The axion field does not simple double the ordinary light cone structure. In fact, it modifies the global topological structure of light cones surfaces. In CFJ-electrodynamics, such a modification results in violation of causality. In addition, the optical metrics in axion electrodynamics are not pseudo-Riemannian. In fact, for all types of the axion field, they are even non-Finslerian.

A covariant gauge independent derivation of the generalized dispersion relation of electromagnetic waves in a medium with local and linear constitutive law is presented. A generalized photon propagator is derived. For Maxwell constitutive tensor, the standard light cone structure and the standard Feynman propagator are reinstated.

Mean-field approach has recently been used to model coupled atom-molecular Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) and coupled Fermi-Bose condensates near Feshbach resonance. Sweeping of magnetic field across the resonance gives a new (nonlinear) version of Landau-Zener problem. We investigate the structure of the corresponding classical phase space and calculate change in the action which corresponds to finite-rate efficiency of the sweep. We discuss dynamics of approximate adiabatic invariants in several nonlinear models being related to physics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). We show that nonadiabatic dynamics in Feshbach resonance passage, nonlinear Landau-Zener (NLZ) tunnelling, and BEC tunnelling oscillations in a double-well can be considered within a unifying approach based on the theory of separatrix crossings. The separatrix crossing theory was applied previously to some problems of classical mechanics, plasma physics and hydrodynamics, but has not been used in the rapidly growing BEC-related field yet. We derive explicit formulas for the change in the action in several models. Extensive numerical calculations support the theory and demonstrate its universal character. Classical electrodynamics can be based on the conservation laws of electric charge and magnetic flux. Both laws are independent of the metric and the linear connection of spacetime. Within the framework of such a premetric electrodynamics -- provided a local and linear constitutive law of the vacuum is added -- the propagation of electromagnetic waves in the geometric-optics limit can be studied. The wave vectors of the wave fronts obey a quartic extended Fresnel equation. If one forbids birefringence in vacuum, the light cone emerges and Maxwell-Lorentz vacuum electrodynamics can be recovered. If minimal coupling of electrodynamics to gravity is assumed, then only the gravitational potential, i.e., the metric of spacetime, emerges in the constitutive law. The problem of derivation of the equations of motion from the field equations is considered. Einstein's field equations have a specific analytical form: They are linear in the second order derivatives and quadratic in the first order derivatives of the field variables. We utilize this particular form and propose a novel algorithm for thederivation of the equations of motion from the field equations. It is based on the condition of the balance between the singular terms of the field equation. We apply the algorithm to a nonlinear Lorentz invariant scalar field model. We show that it results in the Newton law of attraction between the singularities of the field moved on approximately geodesic curves. We investigate several mechanisms of vortex creation during splitting of a spinor BEC in a magnetic trap controlled by a pair of current carrying wires and bias magnetic fields. Our study is motivated by a recent MIT experiment on splitting BECs with a similar trap, where unexpected fork-like structure appeared in the interference fringes corresponding to interference of two condensates, one with and the other without a singly quantized vortex. It is well-known that in a spin-1 BEC in a quadrupole trap a doubly quantized vortex is produced topologically by a ``slow'' reversal of bias magnetic field $B_z$. We find that in the magnetic trap considered it is also possible to produce a 4- and 1-quantized vortex in a spin-1 BEC. The latter is possible, for example, during the magnetic field switching-off process. We therefore provide a possible explanation for the unexpected interference patterns in the experiment. We study which geometric structure can be constructed from the vierbein (frame/coframe) variables and which field models can be related to this geometry. The coframe field models, alternative to GR, are known as viable models for gravity, since they have the Schwarzschild solution. Since the local Lorentz invariance is violated, a physical interpretation of additional six degrees of freedom is required. The geometry of such models is usually given by two different connections -- the Levi-Civita symmetric and metric-compatible connection and the Weitzenbock flat connection. We construct a general family of linear connections of the same type, which includes two connections above as special limiting cases. We show that for dynamical propagation of six additional degrees of freedom it is necessary for the gauge field of infinitesimal transformations (antisymmetric tensor) to satisfy the system of two first order differential equations. This system is similar to the vacuum Maxwell system and even coincides with it on a flat manifold. The corresponding ``Maxwell-compatible connections'' are derived. Alternatively, we derive the same Maxwell-type system as a symmetry conditions of the viable models Lagrangian. Consequently we derive a nontrivial decomposition of the coframe field to the pure metric field plus a dynamical field of infinitesimal Lorentz rotations. Exact spherical symmetric solution for our dynamical field is derived. It is bounded near the Schwarzschild radius.
