The future 6G network is envisioned to be AI-native, and as such, ML models will be pervasive in support of optimizing performance, reducing energy consumption, and in coping with increasing complexity and heterogeneity. A key challenge is automating the process of finding optimal model architectures satisfying stringent requirements stemming from varying tasks, dynamicity and available resources in the infrastructure and deployment positions. In this paper, we describe and review the state-of-the-art in Neural Architecture Search and Transfer Learning and their applicability in networking. Further, we identify open research challenges and set directions with a specific focus on three main requirements with elements unique to the future network, namely combining NAS and TL, multi-objective search, and tabular data. Finally, we outline and discuss both near-term and long-term work ahead.

A permanently available molecular-beam injection setup for controlled molecules (COMO) was installed and commissioned at the small quantum systems (SQS) instrument at the European x-ray free-electron laser (EuXFEL). A $b$-type electrostatic deflector allows for pure state-, size-, and isomer-selected samples of polar molecules and clusters. The source provides a rotationally cold ($T\approx1$~K) and dense ($\rho\approx10^8$~cm$^{-3}$) molecular beam with pulse durations up to 100~\us generated by a new version of the Even-Lavie valve. Here, a performance overview of the COMO setup is presented along with characterization experiments performed both, with an optical laser at the Center for Free-Electron-Laser Science and with x-rays at EuXFEL under burst-mode operation. COMO was designed to be attached to different instruments at the EuXFEL, in particular at the small quantum systems (SQS) and single particles, clusters, and biomolecules (SPB) instruments. This advanced controlled-molecules injection setup enables XFEL studies using highly defined samples with soft and hard x-ray FEL radiation for applications ranging from atomic, molecular, and cluster physics to elementary processes in chemistry and biology.

We present novel approaches involving generative adversarial networks and diffusion models in order to synthesize high quality, live and spoof fingerprint images while preserving features such as uniqueness and diversity. We generate live fingerprints from noise with a variety of methods, and we use image translation techniques to translate live fingerprint images to spoof. To generate different types of spoof images based on limited training data we incorporate style transfer techniques through a cycle autoencoder equipped with a Wasserstein metric along with Gradient Penalty (CycleWGAN-GP) in order to avoid mode collapse and instability. We find that when the spoof training data includes distinct spoof characteristics, it leads to improved live-to-spoof translation. We assess the diversity and realism of the generated live fingerprint images mainly through the Fr\'echet Inception Distance (FID) and the False Acceptance Rate (FAR). Our best diffusion model achieved a FID of 15.78. The comparable WGAN-GP model achieved slightly higher FID while performing better in the uniqueness assessment due to a slightly lower FAR when matched against the training data, indicating better creativity. Moreover, we give example images showing that a DDPM model clearly can generate realistic fingerprint images.

Efficient error estimates for the Trotter product formula are central in quantum computing, mathematical physics, and numerical simulations. However, the Trotter error's dependency on the input state and its application to unbounded operators remains unclear. Here, we present a general theory for error estimation, including higher-order product formulas, with explicit input state dependency. Our approach overcomes two limitations of the existing operator-norm estimates in the literature. First, previous bounds are too pessimistic as they quantify the worst-case scenario. Second, previous bounds become trivial for unbounded operators and cannot be applied to a wide class of Trotter scenarios, including atomic and molecular Hamiltonians. Our method enables analytical treatment of Trotter errors in chemistry simulations, illustrated through a case study on the hydrogen atom. Our findings reveal: (i) for states with fat-tailed energy distribution, such as low-angular-momentum states of the hydrogen atom, the Trotter error scales worse than expected (sublinearly) in the number of Trotter steps; (ii) certain states do not admit an advantage in the scaling from higher-order Trotterization, and thus, the higher-order Trotter hierarchy breaks down for these states, including the hydrogen atom's ground state; (iii) the scaling of higher-order Trotter bounds might depend on the order of the Hamiltonians in the Trotter product for states with fat-tailed energy distribution. Physically, the enlarged Trotter error is caused by the atom's ionization due to the Trotter dynamics. Mathematically, we find that certain domain conditions are not satisfied by some states so higher moments of the potential and kinetic energies diverge. Our analytical error analysis agrees with numerical simulations, indicating that we can estimate the state-dependent Trotter error scaling genuinely., Comment: 50 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

Quantum entanglement between the degrees of freedom encountered in the classical world is challenging to observe due to the surrounding environment. To elucidate this issue, we investigate the entanglement generated over ultrafast timescales in a bipartite quantum system comprising two massive particles: a free-moving photoelectron, which expands to a mesoscopic length-scale, and a light-dressed atomic ion, which represents a hybrid state of light and matter. Although the photoelectron spectra are measured classically, the entanglement allows us to reveal information about the dressed-state dynamics of the ion and the femtosecond extreme ultraviolet pulses delivered by a seeded free-electron laser. The observed generation of entanglement is interpreted using the time-dependent von Neumann entropy. This paper proposes a structural econometric approach to estimating the basic reproduction number ($\mathcal{R}_{0}$) of Covid-19. This approach identifies $\mathcal{R}_{0}$ in a panel regression model by filtering out the effects of mitigating factors on disease diffusion and is easy to implement. We apply the method to data from 48 contiguous U.S. states and a diverse set of countries. Our results reveal a notable concentration of $\mathcal{R}_{0}$ estimates with an average value of 4.5. Through a counterfactual analysis, we highlight a significant underestimation of the $\mathcal{R}_{0}$ when mitigating factors are not appropriately accounted for.

We investigate the spatial characteristics of high-order harmonic radiation generated in argon, and observe cross-like patterns in the far field. An analytical model describing harmonics from an astigmatic driving beam reveals that these patterns result from the order and generation position dependent divergence of harmonics. Even small amounts of driving field astigmatism may result in cross-like patterns, coming from the superposition of individual harmonics with spatial profiles elongated in different directions. By correcting the aberrations using a deformable mirror, we show that fine-tuning the driving wavefront is essential for optimal spatial quality of the harmonics.

The quantum harmonic oscillator is one of the most fundamental objects in physics. We consider the case where it is extended to an arbitrary number modes and includes all possible terms that are bilinear in the annihilation and creation operators, and assume we also have an arbitrary time-dependent drive term that is linear in those operators. Such a Hamiltonian is very general, covering a broad range of systems including quantum optics, superconducting circuit QED, quantum error correcting codes, Bose-Einstein condensates, atomic wave packet transport beyond the adiabatic limit and many others. We examine this situation from the point of view of quantum control, making use of optimal control theory to determine what can be accomplished, both when the controls are arbitrary and when they must minimize some cost function. In particular we develop a class of analytical pulses. We then apply our theory to a number of specific topical physical systems to illustrate its use and provide explicit control functions, including the case of the continuously driven conditional displacement gate., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

A fundamental problem in quantum engineering is determining the lowest time required to ensure that all possible unitaries can be generated with the tools available, which is one of a number of possible quantum speed limits. We examine this problem from the perspective of quantum control, where the system of interest is described by a drift Hamiltonian and set of control Hamiltonians. Our approach uses a combination of Lie algebra theory, Lie groups and differential geometry, and formulates the problem in terms of geodesics on a differentiable manifold. We provide explicit lower bounds on the quantum speed limit for the case of an arbitrary drift, requiring only that the control Hamiltonians generate a topologically closed subgroup of the full unitary group, and formulate criteria as to when our expression for the speed limit is exact and not merely a lower bound. These analytic results are then tested and confirmed using a numerical optimization scheme. Finally we extend the analysis to find a lower bound on the quantum speed limit in the common case where the system is described by a drift Hamiltonian and a single control Hamiltonian., Comment: 13 pages

This paper will argue that one of the biggest challenges for livestock genomics is to make whole-genome sequencing and functional genomics applicable to breeding practice. It discusses potential explanations for why it is so difficult to consistently improve the accuracy of genomic prediction by means of whole-genome sequence data, and three potential attacks on the problem.

Attosecond pulses created by high-order harmonic generation in gases often exhibit strong chromatic aberrations, arising from the broad bandwidth and wavelength-dependent nonlinear light-matter interaction. When the driving laser intensity varies spatially, as for Gaussian driving beams, the apparent source position of the harmonics differs significantly from one order to the next, thus affecting the achievable intensity and duration of the attosecond pulses when they are focused on a target. We show that these chromatic aberrations can be reduced by spatially shaping the fundamental beam to generate high-order harmonics with a driver having a flat-top profile inside the gas medium. By measuring both the intensity profile and wavefront for each harmonic in a plane, we access the extreme ultra-violet (XUV) beam properties and investigate these properties near focus. We observe that controlling chromatic aberrations by flat-top spatial shaping strongly reduces the variation of the XUV spectrum on the beam axis during propagation and, in return, the longitudinal sensitivity of both the temporal profiles and the temporal shifts of the focused attosecond pulses., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures + supplementary material: 10 pages, 13 figures

This paper describes the active available bandwidth measurement tool DietTopp. It measures the available bandwidth and the link capacity on an end-to-end path having one bottleneck link. DietTopp is based on a simplified TOPP method. This paper describe and motivate the simplifications and assumptions made to TOPP. Further, the paper describes some of the DietTopp implementation issues. A first evaluation of DietTopp in a testbed scenario is made. Within this evaluation the performance and measurement accuracy of DietTopp is compared to the state-of-the-art tools Pathload and Pathrate. The radiative quantum cascade, i.e. the consecutive emission of photons from a ladder of energy levels, is of fundamental importance in quantum optics. For example, the two-photon cascaded emission from calcium atoms was used in pioneering experiments to test Bell inequalities. In solid-state quantum optics, the radiative biexciton-exciton cascade has proven useful to generate entangled-photon pairs. More recently, correlations and entanglement of microwave photons emitted from a two-photon cascaded process were measured using superconducting circuits. All these experiments rely on the highly non-linear nature of the underlying energy ladder, enabling direct excitation and probing of specific single-photon transitions. Here, we use exciton polaritons to explore the cascaded emission of photons in the regime where individual transitions of the ladder are not resolved, a regime that has not been addressed so far. We excite a polariton quantum cascade by off-resonant laser excitation and probe the emitted luminescence using a combination of spectral filtering and correlation spectroscopy. Remarkably, the measured photon-photon correlations exhibit a strong dependence on the polariton energy, and therefore on the underlying polaritonic interaction strength, with clear signatures from two- and three-body Feshbach resonances. Our experiment establishes photon-cascade correlation spectroscopy as a highly sensitive tool to provide valuable information about the underlying quantum properties of novel semiconductor materials and we predict its usefulness in view of studying many-body quantum phenomena.

Current non-intrusive measurement techniques for characterising the solids flow in gas-solids suspensions are limited by the low temporal or low spatial resolution of the sample volume, or in the case of optical methods, by a short range of sight. In this work, a sub-millimetre wave range-Doppler radar is developed and validated for non-intrusive sensing of solids concentrations in a gas-solids particle system with known characteristics. The radar system combines favourable features, such as the ability to see through at optical frequencies opaque materials, to measure the local solids velocity and the reflected radar power with a spatial resolution of a few cubic centimetres over distances of a few metres. This paper introduces a method to relate the received radar signal power to the solids volumetric concentrations (cv) of different particulate materials. The experimental set-up provides a steady stream of free-falling solids that consist of glass spheres, bronze spheres or natural sand grains with known particle size distributions and with particle diameters in the range of 50-300 $\mu$m. Thus, the values of cv found using the radar measurements are validated using the values of cv retrieved from closure of the mass balance derived from the measured mass flow rate of the solids stream and the solids velocity. The results show that the radar system provides reliable measurements of cv, with a mean relative error of approximately 25% for all the tested materials, particle sizes and mass flow rates, yielding values of cv ranging from 0.2x10$^{-4}$ m$^{3}$/ m$^{3}$ up to 40x10$^{-4}$ m$^{3}$/ m$^{3}$ and solids velocities within the range of 0-4.5 m/s. We study resonant two-photon ionization of helium atoms via the $1s3p$, $1s4p$ and $1s5p^1$P$_1$ states using the 15$^\mathrm{th}$ harmonic of a titanium-sapphire laser for the excitation and a weak fraction of the laser field for the ionization. The phase of the photoelectron wavepackets is measured by an attosecond interferometric technique, using the 17$^\mathrm{th}$ harmonic. We perform experiments with angular resolution using a velocity map imaging spectrometer and with high energy resolution using a magnetic bottle electron spectrometer. Our results are compared to calculations using the two-photon random phase approximation with exchange to account for electron correlation effects. We give an interpretation for the multiple $\pi$-rad phase jumps observed, both at and away from resonance, as well as their dependence on the emission angle.

We investigated the dissociation of dications and trications of three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), fluorene, phenanthrene, and pyrene. PAHs are a family of molecules ubiquitous in space and involved in much of the chemistry of the interstellar medium. In our experiments, ions are formed by interaction with 30.3 nm extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photons, and their velocity map images are recorded using a PImMS2 multi-mass imaging sensor. Application of recoil-frame covariance analysis allows the total kinetic energy release (TKER) associated with multiple fragmentation channels to be determined to high precision, ranging 1.94-2.60 eV and 2.95-5.29 eV for the dications and trications, respectively. Experimental measurements are supported by Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) simulations.

Emerging use-cases like smart manufacturing and smart cities pose challenges in terms of latency, which cannot be satisfied by traditional centralized networks. Edge networks, which bring computational capacity closer to the users/clients, are a promising solution for supporting these critical low latency services. Different from traditional centralized networks, the edge is distributed by nature and is usually equipped with limited connectivity and compute capacity. This creates a complex network to handle, subject to failures of different natures, that requires novel solutions to work in practice. To reduce complexity, more lightweight solutions are needed for containerization as well as smart monitoring strategies with reduced overhead. Orchestration strategies should provide reliable resource slicing with limited resources, and intelligent scaling while preserving data privacy in a distributed fashion. In sliced networks, the shared tenancy of slices requires adaptive admission control of data flows, based on measurements of network resources. In this paper, we investigate the design of measurement-based admission control schemes, deciding whether a new data flow can be admitted and in this case, on which slice. The objective is to devise a joint measurement and decision strategy that returns a correct decision (e.g., the least loaded slice) with a certain level of confidence while minimizing the measurement cost (the number of measurements made before committing to the decision). We study the design of such strategies for several natural admission criteria specifying what a correct decision is. For each of these criteria, using tools from best arm identification in bandits, we first derive an explicit information-theoretical lower bound on the cost of any algorithm returning the correct decision with fixed confidence. We then devise a joint measurement and decision strategy achieving this theoretical limit. We compare empirically the measurement costs of these strategies, and compare them both to the lower bounds as well as a naive measurement scheme. We find that our algorithm significantly outperforms the naive scheme (by a factor $2-8$).

Extreme-ultraviolet pulses can propagate through ionised solid-density targets, unlike optical pulses and, thus, have the potential to probe the interior of such plasmas on sub-femtosecond timescales. We present a synthetic diagnostic method for solid-density laser-generated plasmas based on the dispersion of an extreme-ultraviolet attosecond probe pulse, in a pump--probe scheme. We demonstrate the theoretical feasibility of this approach through calculating the dispersion of an extreme-ultraviolet probe pulse propagating through a laser-generated plasma. The plasma dynamics is calculated using a particle-in-cell simulation, whereas the dispersion of the probe is calculated with an external pseudo-spectral wave solver, allowing for high accuracy when calculating the dispersion. The application of this method is illustrated on thin-film plastic and aluminium targets irradiated by a high-intensity pump pulse. By comparing the dispersion of the probe pulse at different delays relative to the pump pulse, it is possible to follow the evolution of the plasma as it disintegrates. The high-frequency end of the dispersion provides information on the line-integrated electron density, whereas lower frequencies are more affected by the highest density encountered along the path of the probe. Rabi oscillations are periodic modulations of populations in two-level systems interacting with a time-varying field. They are ubiquitous in physics with applications in different areas such as photonics, nano-electronics, electron microscopy, and quantum information. While the theory developed by Rabi was intended for fermions in gyrating magnetic fields, Autler and Townes realized that it could also be used to describe coherent light-matter interaction within the rotating wave approximation\cite. Although intense nanometer-wavelength light-sources have been available for more than a decade, Rabi dynamics at such short wavelengths have not been observed directly. Here we show that femtosecond extreme-ultraviolet pulses from a seeded free-electron laser can drive Rabi oscillations between the ground state and an excited state in helium atoms. The measured photoemission signal revealed an Autler-Townes doublet as well as an avoided crossing, phenomena that are both trademarks of quantum optics. Using theoretical analyses that go beyond the strong-field approximation, we found that the ultrafast build-up of the doublet structure follows from a quantum interference effect between resonant and non-resonant photoionization pathways. Given the recent availability of intense attosecond and few-femtosecond extreme-ultraviolet pulses, our results offer opportunities to carry out ultrafast manipulation of coherent processes at short wavelengths using free-electron lasers., Comment: 38 pages, 10 figures

We consider a spin-$j$ particle coupled to a structured bath of bosonic modes that decay into thermal baths. We obtain an analytic expression for the reduced spin state and use it to investigate non-Markovian spin dynamics. In the heavily overdamped regime, spin coherences are preserved due to a quantum Zeno affect. We extend the solution to two spins and include coupling between the modes, which can be leveraged for preservation of the symmetric spin subspace. For many spins, we find that inter-mode coupling gives rise to a privileged symmetric mode gapped from the other modes. This provides a handle to selectively address that privileged mode for quantum control of the collective spin. We present the Infrared spectrometer of SuperCam Instrument Suite that enables the Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover to study remotely the Martian mineralogy within the Jezero crater. The SuperCam IR spectrometer is designed to acquire spectra in the 1.3-2.6 $\mu$m domain at a spectral resolution ranging from 5 to 20~nm. The field-of-view of 1.15 mrad, is coaligned with the boresights of the other remote-sensing techniques provided by SuperCam: laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, remote time-resolved Raman and luminescence spectroscopies, and visible reflectance spectroscopy, and micro-imaging. The IR spectra can be acquired from the robotic-arm workspace to long-distances, in order to explore the mineralogical diversity of the Jezero crater, guide the Perseverance Rover in its sampling task, and to document the samples' environment. Ionization of atoms and molecules by absorption of a light pulse results in electron wavepackets carrying information on the atomic or molecular structure as well as on the dynamics of the ionization process. These wavepackets can be described as a coherent sum of waves of given angular momentum, called partial waves, each characterized by an amplitude and a phase. The complete characterization of the individual angular momentum components is experimentally challenging, requiring the analysis of the interference between partial waves both in energy and angle. Using a two-photon interferometry technique based on extreme ultraviolet attosecond and infrared femtosecond pulses, we characterize the individual partial wave components in the photoionization of the 2p shell in neon. The study of the phases of the angular momentum channels allows us to unravel the influence of short-range, correlation and centrifugal effects. This approach enables the complete reconstruction of photoionization electron wavepackets in time and space, providing insight into the photoionization dynamics.

Resting state functional magnetic resonance images (fMRI) are commonly used for classification of patients as having Alzheimer's disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), or being cognitive normal (CN). Most methods use time-series correlation of voxels signals during the observation period as a basis for the classification. In this paper we show that Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classification based on spatial correlation of time-averaged signals yield a classification accuracy of up to 82% (sensitivity 86%, specificity 80%)for a data set with 429 subjects (246 cognitive normal and 183 Alzheimer patients). For the spatial correlation of time-averaged signal values we use voxel subdomains around center points of the 90 regions AAL atlas. We form the subdomains as sets of voxels along a Hilbert curve of a bounding box in which the brain is embedded with the AAL regions center points serving as subdomain seeds. The matrix resulting from the spatial correlation of the 90 arrays formed by the subdomain segments of the Hilbert curve yields a symmetric 90x90 matrix that is used for the classification based on two different CNN networks, a 4-layer CNN network with 3x3 filters and with 4, 8, 16, and 32 output channels respectively, and a 2-layer CNN network with 3x3 filters and with 4 and 8 output channels respectively. We present an online system for real time recognition of actions involving objects working in online mode. The system merges two streams of information processing running in parallel. One is carried out by a hierarchical self-organizing map (SOM) system that recognizes the performed actions by analysing the spatial trajectories of the agent's movements. It consists of two layers of SOMs and a custom made supervised neural network. The activation sequences in the first layer SOM represent the sequences of significant postures of the agent during the performance of actions. These activation sequences are subsequently recoded and clustered in the second layer SOM, and then labeled by the activity in the third layer custom made supervised neural network. The second information processing stream is carried out by a second system that determines which object among several in the agent's vicinity the action is applied to. This is achieved by applying a proximity measure. The presented method combines the two information processing streams to determine what action the agent performed and on what object. The action recognition system has been tested with excellent performance.

Human recognition of the actions of other humans is very efficient and is based on patterns of movements. Our theoretical starting point is that the dynamics of the joint movements is important to action categorization. On the basis of this theory, we present a novel action recognition system that employs a hierarchy of Self-Organizing Maps together with a custom supervised neural network that learns to categorize actions. The system preprocesses the input from a Kinect like 3D camera to exploit the information not only about joint positions, but also their first and second order dynamics. We evaluate our system in two experiments with publicly available data sets, and compare its performance to the performance with less sophisticated preprocessing of the input. The results show that including the dynamics of the actions improves the performance. We also apply an attention mechanism that focuses on the parts of the body that are the most involved in performing the actions.

Large optical nonlinearities can have numerous applications, ranging from the generation of cat-states for optical quantum computation, through to quantum sensing where the sensitivity exceeds Heisenberg scaling in the resources. However, the generation of ultra-large optical nonlinearities has proved immensely challenging experimentally. We describe a novel protocol where one can effectively generate large optical nonlinearities via the conditional application of a linear operation on an optical mode by an ancilla mode, followed by a measurement of the ancilla and corrective operation on the probe mode. Our protocol can generate high quality optical Schr{\"{o}}dinger cat states useful for optical quantum computing and can be used to perform sensing of an unknown rotation or displacement in phase space, with super-Heisenberg scaling in the resources. We introduce and study a new class of stochastic bandit problems, referred to as predictive bandits. In each round, the decision maker first decides whether to gather information about the rewards of particular arms (so that their rewards in this round can be predicted). These measurements are costly, and may be corrupted by noise. The decision maker then selects an arm to be actually played in the round. Predictive bandits find applications in many areas; e.g. they can be applied to channel selection problems in radio communication systems. In this paper, we provide the first theoretical results about predictive bandits, and focus on scenarios where the decision maker is allowed to measure at most one arm per round. We derive asymptotic instance-specific regret lower bounds for these problems, and develop algorithms whose regret match these fundamental limits. We illustrate the performance of our algorithms through numerical experiments. This work presents a photodissociation study of the diamondoid adamantane using extreme ultraviolet femtosecond pulses. The fragmentation dynamics of the dication is unraveled by the use of advanced ion and electron spectroscopy giving access to the dissociation channels as well as their energetics. To get insight into the fragmentation dynamics, we use a theoretical approach combining potential energy surface determination, statistical fragmentation methods and molecular dynamics simulations. Entangled resources enable quantum sensing that achieves Heisenberg scaling, a quadratic improvement on the standard quantum limit, but preparing large scale entangled states is challenging in the presence of decoherence. We present a quantum control strategy using highly nonlinear geometric phase gates for preparing entangled states on spin ensembles which can be used for practical precision metrology. The method uses a dispersive coupling of $N$ spins to a common bosonic mode and does not require addressability, special detunings, or interactions between the spins. Using a control sequence that executes Grover's algorithm on a subspace of permutationally symmetric states, a target entangled resource state can be prepared using $O(N^{5/4})$ geometric phase gates. The geometrically closed path of the control operations ensures the gates are insensitive to the initial state of the mode and the sequence has built-in dynamical decoupling providing resilience to dephasing errors., Comment: 5 pages + 6 pages supplementary, 3 + 1 figures

The hitherto unexplored two-photon doubly-excited states [Ne$^{*}$($2p^{-1}3s$)]$_{2}$ were experimentally identified using the seeded, fully coherent, intense extreme ultraviolet free-electron laser FERMI. These states undergo ultrafast interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) which predominantly produces singly-ionized dimers. In order to obtain the rate of ICD, the resulting yield of Ne$_{2}^{+}$ ions was recorded as a function of delay between the XUV pump and UV probe laser pulses. The extracted lifetimes of the long-lived doubly-excited states, 390 (-130 / +450} fs, and of the short-lived ones, less than 150~fs, are in good agreement with \emph{ab initio} quantum mechanical calculations.

Due to its element- and site-specificity, inner-shell photoelectron spectroscopy is a widely used technique to probe the chemical structure of matter. Here we show that time-resolved inner-shell photoelectron spectroscopy can be employed to observe ultrafast chemical reactions and the electronic response to the nuclear motion with high sensitivity. The ultraviolet dissociation of iodomethane (CH$_3$I) is investigated by ionization above the iodine 4d edge, using time-resolved inner-shell photoelectron and photoion spectroscopy. The dynamics observed in the photoelectron spectra appear earlier and are faster than those seen in the iodine fragments. The experimental results are interpreted using crystal field and spin-orbit configuration interaction calculations, and demonstrate that time-resolved inner-shell photoelectron spectroscopy is a powerful tool to directly track ultrafast structural and electronic transformations in gas-phase molecules.

We report on the design and performance of a velocity map imaging (VMI) spectrometer optimized for experiments using high-intensity extreme ultraviolet (XUV) sources such as laser-driven high-order harmonic generation (HHG) sources and free-electron lasers (FELs). Typically exhibiting low repetition rates and high single-shot count rates, such~experiments do not easily lend themselves to coincident detection of photo-electrons and -ions. In order to obtain molecular frame or reaction channel-specific information, one has to rely on other correlation techniques, such as covariant detection schemes. Our device allows for combining different photo-electron and -ion detection modes for covariance analysis. In a seminal article, Fano predicts that absorption of light occurs preferably with increase of angular momentum. Here we generalize Fano's propensity rule to laser-assisted photoionization, consisting of absorption of an extreme-ultraviolet photon followed by absorption or emission of an infrared photon. The predicted asymmetry between absorption and emission leads to incomplete quantum interference in attosecond photoelectron interferometry. It explains both the angular-dependence of the photoionization time delays and the delay-dependence of the photoelectron angular distributions. Our theory is verified by experimental results in Ar in the 20-40 eV range.

The shortest light pulses produced to date are of the order of a few tens of attoseconds, with central frequencies in the extreme ultraviolet range and bandwidths exceeding tens of eV. They are often produced as a train of pulses separated by half the driving laser period, leading in the frequency domain to a spectrum of high, odd-order harmonics. As light pulses become shorter and more spectrally wide, the widely-used approximation consisting in writing the optical waveform as a product of temporal and spatial amplitudes does not apply anymore. Here, we investigate the interplay of temporal and spatial properties of attosecond pulses. We show that the divergence and focus position of the generated harmonics often strongly depend on their frequency, leading to strong chromatic aberrations of the broadband attosecond pulses. Our argumentation uses a simple analytical model based on Gaussian optics, numerical propagation calculations and experimental harmonic divergence measurements. This effect needs to be considered for future applications requiring high quality focusing while retaining the broadband/ultrashort characteristics of the radiation.

We present an optical system based on two toroidal mirrors in a Wolter configuration to focus broadband XUV radiation. Optimization of the focusing optics alignment is carried out with the aid of an XUV wavefront sensor. Back-propagation of the optimized wavefront to the focus yields a focal spot of 3.6$\times$4.0 $\mu$m$^2$ full width at half maximum, which is consistent with ray-tracing simulations that predict a minimum size of 3.0$\times$3.2 $\mu$m$^2$. The dynamics following laser-induced molecular photodissociation of gas-phase CH$_{2}$BrI at 271.6 nm were investigated by time-resolved Coulomb explosion imaging using intense near-IR femtosecond laser pulses. The observed delay-dependent photofragment momenta reveal that CH$_{2}$BrI undergoes C-I cleavage, depositing 65.6% of the available energy into internal product states, and that absorption of a second UV photon breaks the C-Br bond of CH$_{2}$Br. Simulations confirm that this mechanism is consistent with previous data recorded at 248 nm, demonstrating the sensitivity of Coulomb explosion imaging as a real-time probe of chemical dynamics., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures. We propose a method of estimating the linear-in-means model of peer effects in which the peer group, defined by a social network, is endogenous in the outcome equation for peer effects. Endogeneity is due to unobservable individual characteristics that influence both link formation in the network and the outcome of interest. We propose two estimators of the peer effect equation that control for the endogeneity of the social connections using a control function approach. We leave the functional form of the control function unspecified and treat it as unknown. To estimate the model, we use a sieve semiparametric approach, and we establish asymptotics of the semiparametric estimator.

We explore time-resolved Coulomb explosion induced by intense, extreme ultraviolet (XUV) femtosecond pulses from the FLASH free-electron laser as a method to image photo-induced molecular dynamics in two molecules, iodomethane and 2,6-difluoroiodobenzene. At an excitation wavelength of 267\,nm, the dominant reaction pathway in both molecules is neutral dissociation via cleavage of the carbon--iodine bond. This allows investigating the influence of the molecular environment on the absorption of an intense, femtosecond XUV pulse and the subsequent Coulomb explosion process. We find that the XUV probe pulse induces local inner-shell ionization of atomic iodine in dissociating iodomethane, in contrast to non-selective ionization of all photofragments in difluoroiodobenzene. The results reveal evidence of electron transfer from methyl and phenyl moieties to a multiply charged iodine ion. In addition, indications for ultrafast charge rearrangement on the phenyl radical are found, suggesting that time-resolved Coulomb explosion imaging is sensitive to the localization of charge in extended molecules.

Laser-induced adiabatic alignment and mixed-field orientation of 2,6-difluoroiodobenzene (C6H3F2I) molecules are probed by Coulomb explosion imaging following either near-infrared strong-field ionization or extreme-ultraviolet multi-photon inner-shell ionization using free-electron laser pulses. The resulting photoelectrons and fragment ions are captured by a double-sided velocity map imaging spectrometer and projected onto two position-sensitive detectors. The ion side of the spectrometer is equipped with the Pixel Imaging Mass Spectrometry (PImMS) camera, a time-stamping pixelated detector that can record the hit positions and arrival times of up to four ions per pixel per acquisition cycle. Thus, the time-of-flight trace and ion momentum distributions for all fragments can be recorded simultaneously. We show that we can obtain a high degree of one- and three-dimensional alignment and mixed- field orientation, and compare the Coulomb explosion process induced at both wavelengths.

To meet the 2{\deg}C target and, in particular the 1.5{\deg}C target defined in the Paris Agreement, rapid scaling-up of BECCS (Bio-Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage) and other negative emissions technologies (NETs) is essential. Recent research on BECCS has mainly focused on biophysical and sustainability limitations to multi-Gigatonne deployment in the latter half of this century. However, this paper focuses on the critical short-term opportunities for immediate deployment, considering solely existing bio-energy facilities in Sweden as a case study. We show that the immediate potential for BECCS in this country amounts to 20 Mt annually. This corresponds to 39% of total GHG emissions in 2014 in Sweden. The current costs for implementing BECCS at this level is compared to the present carbon taxes and other incentives. We show that including BECCS in the carbon tax incentive mechanism at current incentive levels would yield 16.7 Mt of negative emissions annually with an estimated societal cost saving of more than 600 M e annually, when compared to current incentive marginal abatement costs. We conclude that Sweden is ideally positioned for immediate BECCS deployment.

Important computational physics problems are often large-scale in nature, and it is highly desirable to have robust and high performing computational frameworks that can quickly address these problems. However, it is no trivial task to determine whether a computational framework is performing efficiently or is scalable. The aim of this paper is to present various strategies for better understanding the performance of any parallel computational frameworks for solving PDEs. Important performance issues that negatively impact time-to-solution are discussed, and we propose a performance spectrum analysis that can enhance one's understanding of critical aforementioned performance issues. As proof of concept, we examine commonly used finite element simulation packages and software and apply the performance spectrum to quickly analyze the performance and scalability across various hardware platforms, software implementations, and numerical discretizations. It is shown that the proposed performance spectrum is a versatile performance model that is not only extendable to more complex PDEs such as hydrostatic ice sheet flow equations, but also useful for understanding hardware performance in a massively parallel computing environment. Potential applications and future extensions of this work are also discussed.

Cellular has always relied on static deployments for providing wireless access. However, even the emerging fifth-generation (5G) networks may face difficulty in supporting the increased traffic demand with rigid, fixed infrastructure without substantial over-provisioning. This is particularly true for spontaneous large-scale events that require service providers to augment capacity of their networks quickly. Today, the use of aerial devices equipped with high-rate radio access capabilities has the potential to offer the much needed "on-demand" capacity boost. Conversely, it also threatens to rattle the long-standing business strategies of wireless operators, especially as the "gold rush" for cheaper millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum lowers the market entry barriers. However, the intricate structure of this new market presently remains a mystery. This paper sheds light on competition and cooperation behavior of dissimilar aerial mmWave access suppliers, concurrently employing licensed and license-exempt frequency bands, by modeling it as a vertically differentiated market where customers have varying preferences in price and quality. To understand viable service provider strategies, we begin with constructing the Nash equilibrium for the initial market competition by employing the Bertrand and Cournot games. We then conduct a unique assessment of short-term market dynamics, where two licensed-band service providers may cooperate to improve their competition positions against the unlicensed-band counterpart intruding the market. We report the observation of room-temperature superradiance from single, highly luminescent diamond nanocrystals with spatial dimensions much smaller than the wavelength of light, and each containing a large number (~10^3) of embedded nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centres. After excitation of the nanodiamonds with an off-resonant, green laser pulse, we observe i) ultrafast radiative lifetimes down to ~ 1 ns, and ii) super-Poissonian photon bunching in the autocorrelation function of the light emitted from the fastest nanodiamonds. We explain our findings with a detailed theoretical model based on collective Dicke states and well-known properties of NV centres. Using a minimal set of fit parameters, the model captures both the wide range of different lifetimes and the nontrivial photon correlations found in the experiments. The results pave the way towards a systematic study of superradiance in a well controlled, solid-state quantum system at room temperature. We present the first demonstration of two-photon double ionization of neon using an intense extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulse train (APT) in a photon energy regime where both direct and sequential mechanisms are allowed. For an APT generated through high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in argon we achieve a total pulse energy close to 1 $\mu$J, a central energy of 35 eV and a total bandwidth of $\sim30$ eV. The APT is focused by broadband optics in a neon gas target to an intensity of $3\cdot10^{12} $W$\cdot$cm$^{-2}$. By tuning the photon energy across the threshold for the sequential process the double ionization signal can be turned on and off, indicating that the two-photon double ionization predominantly occurs through a sequential process. The demonstrated performance opens up possibilities for future XUV-XUV pump-probe experiments with attosecond temporal resolution in a photon energy range where it is possible to unravel the dynamics behind direct vs. sequential double ionization and the associated electron correlation effects.

Detecting faults and SLA violations in a timely manner is critical for telecom providers, in order to avoid loss in business, revenue and reputation. At the same time predicting SLA violations for user services in telecom environments is difficult, due to time-varying user demands and infrastructure load conditions. In this paper, we propose a service-agnostic online learning approach, whereby the behavior of the system is learned on the fly, in order to predict client-side SLA violations. The approach uses device-level metrics, which are collected in a streaming fashion on the server side. Our results show that the approach can produce highly accurate predictions (>90% classification accuracy and < 10% false alarm rate) in scenarios where SLA violations are predicted for a video-on-demand service under changing load patterns. Detecting a single photon without absorbing it is a long standing challenge in quantum optics. All experiments demonstrating the nondestructive detection of a photon make use of a high quality cavity. We present a cavity free scheme for nondestructive single-photon detection. By pumping a nonlinear medium we implement an inter-field Rabi-oscillation which leads to a ?pi phase shift on weak probe coherent laser field in the presence of a single signal photon without destroying the signal photon. Our cavity-free scheme operates with a fast intrinsic time scale in comparison with similar cavity-based schemes. We implement a full real-space multimode numerical analysis of the interacting photonic modes and confirm the validity of our nondestructive scheme in the multimode case., Comment: 4 figures, 5 pages

In a class of methods for measurement of available path capacity and other capacity-related metrics in a network, trains of probe packets are transmitted from a sender to a receiver across a network path, and the sequences of time stamps at sending and reception are analyzed. In large-scale implementations there may potentially be interference between the probe-packet trains corresponding to several concurrent measurement sessions, due to congestion in the network and common measurement end points. This paper outlines principles for large-scale deployments of network capacity measurement methods using standardized network functionality. Further, the paper provides an in-depth study of dimensioning and scalability challenges related to the measurement end-points of such systems. The main result is a framework for dimensioning of large-scale network capacity measurement systems based on TWAMP. The framework is based on a method for explicit calculation of queuelength and waiting-time distributions, where results from M/G/1 queuing theory are combined with Monte Carlo integration.

Flow cytometry is a widespread single-cell measurement technology with a multitude of clinical and research applications. Interpretation of flow cytometry data is hard; the instrumentation is delicate and can not render absolute measurements, hence samples can only be interpreted in relation to each other while at the same time comparisons are confounded by inter-sample variation. Despite this, current automated flow cytometry data analysis methods either treat samples individually or ignore the variation by for example pooling the data. In this article we introduce a Bayesian hierarchical model for studying latent relations between cell populations in flow cytometry samples, thereby systematizing inter-sample variation. The model is applied to a data set containing replicated flow cytometry measurements of samples from healthy individuals, with informative priors capturing expert knowledge. It is shown that the technical variation in the inferred cell population sizes is small in comparison to the intrinsic biological variation. The large size of flow cytometry data, where a single sample can contain measurements on hundreds of thousands of cells, necessitates computationally efficient methods. We utilise a magneto-mechanical levitated massive resonator in the quantum regime to prepare highly macroscopic quantum superposition states. Using these macroscopic superpositions we present a novel interferometry protocol to perform absolute gravimetry with a sensitivity that exceeds state of the art atom-interferometric and corner-cube gravimeters by a factor of 20. In addition, our scheme allows probing the gravitational field on a length scale eight orders of magnitude smaller than other methods.
