We present the application of the image coaddition algorithm, Up-sampling and PSF Deconvolution Coaddition (UPDC), for stacking multiple exposure images captured by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam). By addressing the point spread function (PSF) effect, UPDC provides visually enhanced and sharper images. Furthermore, the anti-aliasing and super-resolution capabilities of UPDC make it easier to deblend sources overlapped on images, yielding a higher accuracy of aperture photometry. We apply this algorithm to the SMACS J0723 imaging data. Comparative analysis with the Drizzle algorithm demonstrates significant improvements in detecting faint sources, achieving accurate photometry, and effectively deblending (super-resolution) closely packed sources. {As a result, we have newly detected a pair of close binary stars that were previously unresolvable in the original exposures or the Drizzled image.} These improvements significantly benefit various scientific projects conducted by JWST. Correlations between galaxies and their supermassive black holes (SMBHs) have been observed, but the causal mechanisms remained unclear. The emerging field of causal inference now enables examining these relationships using observational data. This study, using advanced causal discovery techniques and a state-of-the-art dataset, reveals a causal link between galaxy properties and SMBH masses. In elliptical galaxies, bulge properties influence SMBH growth, while in spiral galaxies, SMBHs affect host galaxy properties, potentially through feedback in gas-rich environments. For spiral galaxies, SMBHs progressively quench star formation, whereas in elliptical galaxies, quenching is complete, and the causal connection has reversed. We present the High-$z$ Evolution of Large and Luminous Objects (HELLO) project, a set of $\sim\!30$ high-resolution cosmological simulations aimed to study Milky Way analogues ($M_\star\sim10^{10-11}$\,\Msun) at high redshift ($z\sim [2-4]$). Based on the Numerical Investigation of a Hundred Astrophysical Objects (NIHAO), HELLO features an updated scheme for chemical enrichment and the addition of local photoionization feedback. Independently of redshift and mass, our galaxies exhibit a smooth progression along the star formation main sequence until $M_\star \sim\!10^{10.5}$, around which our sample at $z \sim 4$ remains mostly unperturbed while the most massive galaxies at $z \sim 2$ reach their peak star formation rate (SFR) and its subsequent decline, due to a mix of gas consumption and stellar feedback. While AGN feedback remains subdominant with respect to stellar feedback for energy deposition, its localised nature likely adds to the physical processes leading to declining SFRs. The phase in which a galaxy in our mass range can be found at a given redshift is set by its gas reservoir and assembly history. Finally, our galaxies are in excellent agreement with various scaling relations observed with the \textit{Hubble Space Telescope} and the \textit{James Webb Space Telescope}, and hence can be used to provide the theoretical framework to interpret current and future observations from these facilities and shed light on the transition from star-forming to quiescent galaxies., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables, published in MNRAS

We have developed a novel method for co-adding multiple under-sampled images that combines the iteratively reweighted least squares and divide-and-conquer algorithms. Our approach not only allows for the anti-aliasing of the images but also enables PSF deconvolution, resulting in enhanced restoration of extended sources, the highest PSNR, and reduced ringing artefacts. To test our method, we conducted numerical simulations that replicated observation runs of the CSST/VST telescope and compared our results to those obtained using previous algorithms. The simulation showed that our method outperforms previous approaches in several ways, such as restoring the profile of extended sources and minimizing ringing artefacts. Additionally, because our method relies on the inherent advantages of least squares fitting, it is more versatile and does not depend on the local uniformity hypothesis for the PSF. In the regime of cosmology and large-scale structure formation, filaments are vital components of the cosmic web. This study employs statistical methods to examine the formation, evolution, and cosmological constraints of filaments identified by DisPerSe. We run large-sample of N-body simulations to study the filament length and its evolution. In general, the filament length distribution can be fitted by a power law with both the normalization and power index dependent on redshift and cosmological parameters. It is discovered that filament length distribution is influenced by various cosmological parameters, with $\sigma_8$ and $n_s$ exhibiting slightly stronger dependence than $\Omega_m$. We also uncover a three-stage filament formation process from $z \sim 3$ to $z \sim 1$: rapid formation of both long and short filaments from $z \sim 3$ to $z \sim 2$, persistence of long filaments from $z \sim 2$ to $z \sim 1$, followed by fragmentation and increased prevalence of shorter filaments below $z \sim 1$. Finally, we employ initial power spectrum fluctuations to elucidate the cosmological dependence on the filament length function. For decades, the boundary of cosmic filaments have been a subject of debate. In this work, we determine the physically-motivated radii of filaments by constructing stacked galaxy number density profiles around the filament spines. We find that the slope of the profile changes with distance to the filament spine, reaching its minimum at approximately 1 Mpc at z = 0 in both state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations and observational data. This can be taken as the average value of the filament radius. Furthermore, we note that the average filament radius rapidly decreases from z = 4 to z = 1, and then slightly increases. Moreover, we find that the filament radius depends on the filament length, the distance from connected clusters, and the masses of the clusters. These results suggest a two-phase formation scenario of cosmic filaments. The filaments experience rapid contraction before z = 1, but their density distribution has remained roughly stable since then. Galaxy angular momenta (spins) contain valuable cosmological information, complementing their positions and velocities. The baryonic spin direction of galaxies has been probed as a reliable tracer of their host halos and the primordial spin modes. Here we use the TNG100 simulation of the IllustrisTNG project to study the spin magnitude correlations between dark matter, gas, and stellar components of galaxy-halo systems and their evolutions across cosmic history. We find that these components generate similar initial spin magnitudes from the same tidal torque in Lagrangian space. At low redshifts, the gas component still traces the spin magnitude of the dark matter halo and the primordial spin magnitude. However, the traceability of the stellar component depends on the $ex$ $situ$ stellar mass fraction, $f_{\rm acc}$. Our results suggest that the galaxy baryonic spin magnitude can also serve as a tracer of their host halo and the initial perturbations, and the galaxy-halo correlations are affected by the similarity of their evolution histories., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures. We utilize the public GIZMO code to simulate twelve disc galaxies from the NIHAO suite simulated with the GASOLINE code, then compare the corresponding galaxies in the two simulations. We find that while both codes with the same initial conditions and large-scale environments can successfully produce similar disc galaxies, significant differences are still seen in many properties of the galaxies, particularly in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) environment they reside. Specifically, the thermal feedback recipe used in GASOLINE results in ubiquitous long-lasting collimated outflows, primarily driven by high-density hot interstellar medium (ISM) from the galaxy center, and inflows of gas not aligned with the outflow cools rapidly and flows towards the galactic center. In contrast, galaxies from GIZMO code do not exhibit large-scale outflows at low redshifts, but instead display quasi-virialized hot gaseous halos that arise from the strong interaction between inflow of gas and feedback driven outflow. Therefore, the origins of mass and angular momentum of the cold disc in the two simulations are quite different, even though the final morphologies of corresponding galaxies are similar at $z\sim0$. The Hot Universe Baryon Surveyor (HUBS) is a proposed space-based X-ray telescope for detecting X-ray emissions from the hot gas content in our universe. With its unprecedented spatially-resolved high-resolution spectroscopy and large field of view, the HUBS mission will be uniquely qualified to measure the physical and chemical properties of the hot gas in the interstellar medium, the circumgalactic medium, the intergalactic medium, and the intracluster medium. These measurements will be valuable for two key scientific goals of HUBS, namely to unravel the AGN and stellar feedback physics that governs the formation and evolution of galaxies, and to probe the baryon budget and multi-phase states from galactic to cosmological scales. In addition to these two goals, the HUBS mission will also help us solve some problems in the fields of galaxy clusters, AGNs, diffuse X-ray backgrounds, supernova remnants, and compact objects. Recent observations from weak gravitational lensing (WL) surveys indicate a smoother Universe compared to the predictions of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). This inconsistency is commonly referred to as the $\sigma_8$ tension or $S_8$ tension, where $\sigma_8$ represents the present root-mean-square matter fluctuation averaged over a sphere of radius $8 h^{-1} \mathrm{Mpc}$, and $S_8 \equiv \sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_m/0.3}$. In this article, we investigate a kind of general Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) Lagrangian referred to as \textit{surface-type DBI} (sDBI) model. We find that up to the linear order, the constraints on the sDBI model with high-redshift probe (CMB) and low-redshift probes (WL and Galaxy Clustering, GC) yield $S_8= 0.7448_{-0.21}^{+0.031}$ and $0.7426_{-0.085}^{+0.054}$, respectively. Remarkably, these values not only demonstrate self-consistency but also align with the values obtained from the majority of low-redshift probes. We study the Satellite Plane Problem of the Milky Way\ (MW) by using the recently published simulation data of TNG50-1. Here, we only consider the satellite plane consisting of the brightest 14 MW satellites \ (11 classical satellites plus Canes Venatici I\ (CVn I), Crater II and Antlia II). One halo\ (haloID=395, at z=0, hereafter halo395 ) of 231 MW like candidates, possesses a satellite plane as spatially thin and kinematically coherent as the observed one has been found. Halo395 resembles the MW in a number of intriguing ways: it hosts a spiral central galaxy and its satellite plane is almost ($\sim 87^{\circ}$)perpendicular to the central stellar disk. In addition, halo395 is embedded in a sheet plane, with a void on the top and bottom, similar to the local environment of MW. More interestingly, we found that the 11 of 14 of the satellites on the plane of halo395, arise precisely from the peculiar geometry of its large-scale environment\ (e.g. sheet and voids). The remaining three members appeared at the right place with the right velocity by chance at z=0. Our results support previous studies wherein the Satellite Plane Problem is not seen as a serious challenge to the $\Lambda$CDM model and its formation is ascribed to the peculiarities of our environment., Comment: Accepted for publication by ApJ. The peculiar velocities of dark matter halos are crucial to study many issues in cosmology and galaxy evolution. In this study, by using the state-of-the-art deep learning technique, a UNet-based neural network, we propose to reconstruct the peculiar velocity field from the redshift-space distribution of dark matter halos. Through a point-to-point comparison and examination of various statistical properties, we demonstrate that, the reconstructed velocity field is in good agreement with the ground truth. The power spectra of various velocity field components, including velocity magnitude, divergence and vorticity, can be successfully recovered when $k\lesssim 1.1$ $h/\rm Mpc$ (the Nyquist frequency of the simulations) at about 80% accuracy. This approach is very promising and presents an alternative method to correct the redshift-space distortions using the measured 3D spatial information of halos. Additionally, for the reconstruction of the momentum field of halos, UNet achieves similar good results. We predict the dwarf galaxy detection limits for the upcoming Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST) survey that will cover 17,500 deg$^{2}$ of the sky with a wide field of view of 1.1 deg$^2$. The point-source depth reaches 26.3 mag in the $g$ band and 25.9 mag in the $i$ band. Constructing mock survey data based on the designed photometric bands, we estimate the recovery rate of artificial dwarf galaxies from mock point-source photometric catalogues. The detection of these artificial dwarf galaxies is strongly dependent on their distance, magnitude and size, in agreement with searches in current surveys. We expect CSST to enable the detection of dwarf galaxies with $M_V = -3.0$ and $\mu_{250} = 32.0$ mag/arcsec$^2$ (surface-brightness limit for a system of half-light radius $r_{\rm h}$ = 250 pc at 400 kpc, and $M_V = -4.9$ and $\mu_{250} = 30.5$ mag/arcsec$^2$ around the Andromeda galaxy. Beyond the Local Group, the CSST survey will achieve $M_V = -5.8$, and $\mu_{250}$ = 29.7 mag/arcsec$^2$ in the distance range of 1--2 Mpc, opening up an exciting discovery space for faint field dwarf galaxies. With its optical bands, wide survey footprint, and space resolution, CSST will undoubtedly expand our knowledge of low-mass dwarf galaxies to an unprecedented volume., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures. Sophisticated spectral energy distribution (SED) models describe dust attenuation and emission using geometry parameters. This treatment is natural since dust effects are driven by the underlying star-dust geometry in galaxies. An example is the Starduster SED model, which divides a galaxy into a stellar disk, a stellar bulge, and a dust disk. This work utilises the Starduster SED model to study the efficacy of inferring geometry parameters using spatially integrated SED fitting. Our method fits the SED model to mock photometry produced by combining a semi-analytic model with the same SED model. Our fitting results imply that the disk radius can be constrained, while the inclination angle, dust disk to stellar disk radius ratio, bulge radius and intrinsic bulge to total luminosity ratio are unconstrained, even though 21 filters from UV to FIR are used. We also study the impact of S/N, finding that the increase of S/N (up to 80) brings limited improvements to the results. Galaxies display several well-behaved scaling relations between their properties, such as the star formation rate-stellar mass relation (the main sequence) and the stellar mass-halo mass relation (SHMR). In principle, these scaling relations could imply different star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies and different constraints on galaxy formation physics. In this paper, we derive the SFHs of galaxies by assuming that they always follow the SHMRs at different redshifts and use an empirical model to constrain key processes in their baryon cycle. It is found that, besides cold accretion due to halo growth, outflow of gas produced by stellar feedback has to be recycled to sustain the derived SFHs of galaxies. The recycled fraction is strongly affected by the baryon fraction in accreted low-mass haloes and the mass loading factor which quantifies the ratio between the galactic outflow rate and star formation rate. Our fiducial model predicts that around $20-60\%$ of outflow is recycled in $\sim0.5-4Gyrs$, while simulations predict a slightly higher recycle fraction and a lower recycle time. We argue that strong constraints on the baryon cycle process can be obtained from future observation of the circum-galactic medium (CGM) of galaxies, such as the gas cooling rate of CGM. We also find that the implied SFHs from the SHMRs indicate that galaxies stay on the main sequences only for part of their lifetimes. It has been suggested that a trail of diffuse galaxies, including two dark matter deficient galaxies (DMDGs), in the vicinity of NGC1052 formed because of a high-speed collision between two gas-rich dwarf galaxies, one bound to NGC1052 and the other one on an unbound orbit. The collision compresses the gas reservoirs of the colliding galaxies, which in turn triggers a burst of star formation. In contrast, the dark matter and pre-existing stars in the progenitor galaxies pass through it. Since the high pressures in the compressed gas are conducive to the formation of massive globular clusters (GCs), this scenario can explain the formation of DMDGs with large populations of massive GCs, consistent with the observations of NGC1052-DF2 (DF2) and NGC1052-DF4. A potential difficulty with this `mini bullet cluster' scenario is that the observed spatial distributions of GCs in DMDGs are extended. GCs experience dynamical friction causing their orbits to decay with time. Consequently, their distribution at formation should have been even more extended than that observed at present. Using a semi-analytic model, we show that the observed positions and velocities of the GCs in DF2 imply that they must have formed at a radial distance of 5-10kpc from the center of DF2. However, as we demonstrate, the scenario is difficult to reconcile with the fact that the strong tidal forces from NGC1052 strip the extendedly distributed GCs from DF2, requiring 33-59 massive GCs to form at the collision to explain observations., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

The galaxy intrinsic alignment (IA) is a dominant source of systematics in weak lensing (WL) studies. In this paper, by employing large simulations with semi-analytical galaxy formation, we investigate the IA effects on WL peak statistics. Different simulated source galaxy samples of different redshift distributions are constructed, where both WL shear and IA signals are included. Convergence reconstruction and peak statistics are then performed for these samples. Our results show that the IA effects on peak abundances mainly consist of two aspects. One is the additional contribution from IA to the shape noise. The other is from the satellite IA that can affect the peak signals from their host clusters significantly. The latter depends on the level of inclusion in a shear sample of the satellite galaxies of the clusters that contribute to WL peaks, and thus is sensitive to the redshift distribution of source galaxies. We pay particular attention to satellite IA and adjust it artificially in the simulations to analyze the dependence of the satellite IA impacts on its strength. This information can potentially be incorporated into the modeling of WL peak abundances, especially for high peaks physically originated from massive clusters of galaxies, and thus to mitigate the IA systematics on the cosmological constraints derived from WL peaks., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

In this paper, we present a spherical Fast Multipole Method (sFMM) for ray tracing simulation of gravitational lensing (GL) on a curved sky. The sFMM is a non-trivial extension of the Fast Multiple Method (FMM) to sphere $\mathbb S^2$, and it can accurately solve the Poisson equation with time complexity of $O(N)\log(N)$, where $N$ is the number of particles. It is found that the time complexity of the sFMM is near $O(N)$ and the computational accuracy can reach $10^{-10}$ in our test. In addition, compared with the Fast Spherical Harmonic Transform (FSHT), the sFMM is not only faster but more accurate, as it has the ability to reserve high-frequency components of the density field. These merits make the sFMM an optimum method to simulate the gravitational lensing on a curved sky, which is the case for upcoming large-area sky surveys, such as the Vera Rubin Observatory and the China Space Station Telescope., Comment: Accepted by The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ)

In this article, we provide an alternative up-sampling and PSF deconvolution method for the iterative multi-exposure coaddition. Different from the previous works, the new method has a ratio-correction term, which allows the iterations to converge more rapidly to an accurate representation of the underlying image than those with difference-correction terms. By employing this method, one can coadd the under-sampled multi-exposures to a super-resolution and obtain a higher peak signal-to-noise ratio. A set of simulations show that we can take many advantages of the new method, e.g. in the signal-to-noise ratio, the average deviation of all source fluxes, super-resolution, and source distortion ratio, etc., which are friendly to astronomical photometry and morphology, and benefits faint source detection and shear measurement of weak gravitational lensing. The star formation history (SFH) of galaxies is critical for understanding galaxy evolution. Hydrodynamical simulations enable us to precisely reconstruct the SFH of galaxies and establish a link to the underlying physical processes. In this work, we present a model to describe individual galaxies' SFHs from three simulations: TheThreeHundred, Illustris-1 and TNG100-1. This model divides the galaxy SFH into two distinct components: the "main sequence" and the "variation". The "main sequence" part is generated by tracing the history of the $SFR-M_*$ main sequence of galaxies across time. The "variation" part consists of the scatter around the main sequence, which is reproduced by fractional Brownian motions. We find that: 1) The evolution of the main sequence varies between simulations; 2) fractional Brownian motions can reproduce many features of SFHs, however, discrepancies still exist; 3) The variations and mass-loss rate are crucial for reconstructing the SFHs of the simulations. This model provides a fair description of the SFHs in simulations. On the other hand, by correlating the fractional Brownian motion model to simulation data, we provide a 'standard' against which to compare simulations., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables

We have analysed two cosmological zoom simulations with $M_{\rm vir}\sim 10^{12}{\rm\,M}_\odot$ from the NIHAO series, both with and without feedback. We show that an entropy criterion based on the equation of state of the intergalactic medium can successfully separate cold- and hot-mode accretion. The shock-heated gas has non-negligible turbulent support and cools inefficiently. In the simulations without feedback, only a small fraction ($\sim 20$ per cent) of the stellar mass comes from baryons that have been in the hot circumgalactic medium, although quantitative conclusions should be taken with caution due to our small-number statistics. With feedback, the fraction is larger because of the reaccretion of gas heated by supernovae, which has lower entropies and shorter cooling times than the gas heated by accretion shocks. We have compared the results of NIHAO to predictions of the GalICS 2.1 semianalytic model of galaxy formation. Although active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback is required in simulations of galaxies to regulate star formation, further downstream effects on the dark matter distribution of the halo and stellar kinematics of the central galaxy can be expected. We combine simulations of galaxies with and without AGN physics from the Numerical Investigation of a Hundred Astrophysical Objects (NIHAO) to investigate the effect of AGN on the dark matter profile and central stellar rotation of the host galaxies. Specifically, we study how the concentration-halo mass ($c-M$) relation and the stellar spin parameter ($\lambda_R$) are affected by AGN feedback. We find that AGN physics is crucial to reduce the central density of simulated massive ($\gtrsim 10^{12}$ M$_\odot$) galaxies and bring their concentration to agreement with results from the Spitzer Photometry & Accurate Rotation Curves (SPARC) sample. Similarly, AGN feedback has a key role in reproducing the dichotomy between slow and fast rotators as observed by the ATLAS$^{3\text{D}}$ survey. Without star formation suppression due to AGN feedback, the number of fast rotators strongly exceeds the observational constraints. Our study shows that there are several collateral effects that support the importance of AGN feedback in galaxy formation, and these effects can be used to constrain its implementation in numerical simulations., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 15 pages, 10 figures

The transition of high-mass galaxies from being blue and star forming to being red and dead is a crucial step in galaxy evolution, yet not fully understood. In this work, we use the NIHAO suite of galaxy simulations to investigate the relation between the transition time through the green valley and other galaxy properties. The typical green valley crossing time of our galaxies is approximately 400 Myr, somewhat shorter than observational estimates. The crossing of the green valley is triggered by the onset of AGN feedback and the subsequent shut down of star formation. Interestingly the time spent in the green valley is not related to any other galaxy properties, such as stellar age or metallicity, or the time at which the star formation quenching takes place. The crossing time is set by two main contributions: the ageing of the current stellar population and the residual star formation in the green valley. These effects are of comparable magnitude, while major and minor mergers have a negligible contribution. Most interestingly, we find the time that a galaxy spends to travel through the green valley is twice the $e$-folding time of the star formation quenching. This result is stable against galaxy properties and the exact numerical implementation of AGN feedback in the simulation. Assuming a typical crossing time of about one Gyr inferred from observations, our results imply that any mechanism or process aiming to quench star formation, must do it on a typical timescale of 500 Myr., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

A rare population of massive disk galaxies have been found to invade the red sequence dominated by early-type galaxies. These red/quenched massive disk galaxies have recently gained great interest into their formation and origins. The usually proposed quenching mechanisms, such as bar quenching and environment quenching, seem not suitable for those bulge-less quenched disks in low-density environment. In this paper, we use the IllustrisTNG-300 simulation to investigate the formation of massive quenched central disk galaxies. It is found that these galaxies contain less gas and harbor giant supermassive black holes(SMBHs) (above $ 10^{8}M_{\odot}$) than their star forming counterparts. By tracing their formation history, we found that quenched disk galaxies formed early and preserved disk morphology for cosmological time scales. They have experienced less than one major merger on average and it is mainly mini-mergers (mass ratio $<$1/10) that contribute to the growth of their SMBHs. In the Illustris-TNG simulation the black hole feedback mode switches from thermal to kinetic feedback when the black hole mass is more massive than $\sim 10^{8}M_{\odot}$, which is more efficient to eject gas outside of the galaxy and to suppress further cooling of hot gaseous halo. We present Starduster, a supervised deep learning model that predicts the multi-wavelength SED from galaxy geometry parameters and star formation history by emulating dust radiative transfer simulations. The model is comprised of three specifically designed neural networks, which take into account the features of dust attenuation and emission. We utilise the Skirt radiative transfer simulation to produce data for the training data of neural networks. Each neural network can be trained using ~ 4000 - 5000 samples. Compared with the direct results of the Skirt simulation, our deep learning model produces ~ 0.005 mag and ~ 0.1 - 0.2 mag errors for dust attenuation and emission respectively. As an application, we fit our model to the observed SEDs of IC4225 and NGC5166. Our model can reproduce the observations, and provide reasonable measurements of the inclination angle and stellar mass. However, some predicted geometry parameters are different from an image-fitting study. Our analysis implies that including a constraint at (rest-frame) ~ 40 micron could alleviate the degeneracy in the parameter space for both IC4225 and NGC5166, leading to broadly consistent results with the image-fitting predictions. Cosmic filaments are the largest collapsing structure in the Universe. Recently both observations and simulations inferred that cosmic filaments have coherent angular momenta (spins). Here we use filament finders to identify the filamentary structures in cosmological simulations and study their physical origins, which are well described by the primordial tidal torque of their Lagrangian counterpart regions -- protofilaments. This initial angular momenta statistically preserve their directions to low redshifts. We further show that a spin reconstruction method can predict the spins of filaments and potentially relate their spins to the initial conditions of the Universe. This correlation provides a new way of constraining and obtaining additional information of the initial perturbations of the Universe., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. The Fourier transformation is an effective and efficient operation of Gaussianization at the one-point level. Using a set of N-body simulation data, we verified that the one-point distribution functions of the dark matter momentum divergence and density fields closely follow complex Gaussian distributions. The one-point distribution function of the quotient of two complex Gaussian variables is introduced and studied. Statistical theories are then applied to model one-point statistics about the growth of individual Fourier mode of the dark matter density field, which can be obtained by the ratio of two Fourier transformed cosmic fields. Our simulation results proved that the models based on the Gaussian approximation are impressively accurate, and our analysis revealed many interesting aspects about the growth of dark matter's density fluctuation in Fourier space., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures. The population of satellite galaxies in a host galaxy is a combination of the cumulative accretion of subhaloes and their associated star formation efficiencies, therefore, the luminosity distribution of satellites provides valuable information of both dark matter properties and star formation physics. Recently, the luminosity function of satellites in nearby Milky Way-mass galaxies has been well measured to satellites as faint as Leo I with $M_{V} \sim -8$. In addition to the finding of the diversity in the satellite luminosity functions, it has been noticed that there is a big gap among the magnitude of satellites in some host galaxies, such as M101, where the gap is around 5 in magnitude, noticeably larger than the prediction from the halo abundance matching method. The reason of this gap is still unknown. In this paper, we use a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation, combined with high-resolution N-body simulation, to investigate the probability and origin of such big gap in M101-alike galaxies. We found that, although M101 analogues are very rare with probability of \sim 0.1%-0.2% in the local universe, their formation is a natural outcome of the CDM model. The gap in magnitude is mainly due to the mass of the accreted subhaloes, not from the stochastic star formation in them. We also found that the gap is correlated with the total satellite mass and host halo mass. By tracing the formation history of M101 type galaxies, we find that they likely formed after $z \sim 1$ due to the newly accreted bright satellites. Both simulation and observational data have shown that the spin and shape of dark matter halos are correlated with their nearby large-scale environment. As structure formation on different scales is strongly coupled, it is trick to disentangle the formation of halo with the large-scale environment, making it difficult to infer which is the driving force for the correlation between halo spin/shape with the large-scale structure. In this paper, we use N-body simulation to produce twin Universes that share the same initial conditions on small scales but different on large scales. This is achieved by changing the random seeds for the phase of those k modes smaller than a given scale in the initial conditions. In this way, we are able to disentangle the formation of halo and large-scale structure, making it possible to investigate how halo spin and shape correspond to the change of environment on large scales. We identify matching halo pairs in the twin simulations as those sharing the maximum number of identical particles within each other. Using these matched halo pairs, we study the cross match of halo spin and their correlation with the large-scale structure. It is found that when the large-scale environment changes (eigenvector) between the twin simulations, the halo spin has to rotate accordingly, although not significantly, to maintain the universal correlation seen in each simulation. Most cosmological structures in the universe spin. Although structures in the universe form on a wide variety of scales from small dwarf galaxies to large super clusters, the generation of angular momentum across these scales is poorly understood. We have investigated the possibility that filaments of galaxies - cylindrical tendrils of matter hundreds of millions of light-years across, are themselves spinning. By stacking thousands of filaments together and examining the velocity of galaxies perpendicular to the filament's axis (via their red and blue shift), we have found that these objects too display motion consistent with rotation making them the largest objects known to have angular momentum. The strength of the rotation signal is directly dependent on the viewing angle and the dynamical state of the filament. Just as it is easiest to measure rotation in a spinning disk galaxy viewed edge on, so too is filament rotation clearly detected under similar geometric alignment. Furthermore, the mass of the haloes that sit at either end of the filaments also increases the spin speed. The more massive the haloes, the more rotation is detected. Satellites are not randomly distributed around their central galaxies but show polar and planar structures. In this paper, we investigate the axis-asymmetry or lopsidedness of satellite galaxy distributions around isolated galaxies in a hydrodynamic cosmological simulation. We find a statistically significant lopsided signal by studying the angular distribution of the satellite galaxies' projected positions around isolated central galaxies in a two-dimensional plane. The signal is dependent on galaxy mass, color and large-scale environment. Satellites that inhabit low-mass blue hosts, or located further from the hosts show the most lopsided signal. Galaxy systems with massive neighbors exhibit stronger lopsidedness. This satellite axis-asymmetry signal also decreases as the universe evolves. We present a new study of the merger dynamics of Abell~1775 by analyzing the high-quality Chandra and XMM-Newton archival data. We confirm/identify an arc-shaped edge (i.e., the head) at $\sim48$~kpc west of the X-ray peak, a split cold gas tail that extends eastward to $\sim163$~kpc, and a plume of spiral-like X-ray excess (within about $81-324$~kpc northeast of the cluster core) that connects to the end of the tail. The head, across which the projected gas temperature rises outward from $3.39_{-0.18}^{+0.28}$~keV to $5.30_{-0.43}^{+0.54}$~keV, is found to be a cold front with a Mach number of $\mathcal{M}\sim0.79$. Along the surfaces of the cold front and tail, typical KHI features (noses and wings, etc.) are found and are used to constrain the upper limit of the magnetic field ($\sim11.2~\mu$G) and the viscosity suppression factor ($\sim0.01$). Combining optical and radio evidence we propose a two-body merger (instead of systematic motion in a large-scale gas environment) scenario and have carried out idealized hydrodynamic simulations to verify it. We find that the observed X-ray emission and temperature distributions can be best reproduced with a merger mass ratio of 5 after the first pericentric passage. The NAT radio galaxy is thus more likely to be a single galaxy falling into the cluster center at a relative velocity of 2800~$\rm km~s^{-1}$, a speed constrained by its radio morphology. The infalling subcluster is expected to have a relatively low gas content, because only a gas-poor subcluster can cause central-only disturbances as observed in such an off-axis merger., Comment: 12 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in the ApJ

Mass segregation, a tendency of more massive galaxies being distributed closer to the cluster center, is naturally expected from dynamical friction, but its presence is still controversial. Using deep optical observations of 14 Abell clusters (KYDISC) and a set of hydrodynamic simulations (YZiCS), we find in some cases a hint of mass segregation inside the virial radius. Segregation is visible more clearly when the massive galaxy fraction is used instead of mean stellar mass. The trend is more significant in the simulations than in the observations. To find out the mechanisms working on mass segregation, we look into the evolution of individual clusters simulated. We find that the degree of mass segregation is different for different clusters: the trend is visible only for low-mass clusters. We compare the masses of galaxies and their dark haloes at the time of infall and at the present epoch to quantify the amount of tidal stripping. We then conclude that satellites that get accreted at earlier epochs or galaxies in more massive clusters go through more tidal stripping. We use hydrodynamical cosmological simulations to show that it is possible to create, via tidal interactions, galaxies lacking dark matter in a dark matter dominated universe. We select dwarf galaxies from the NIHAO project, obtained in the standard Cold Dark Matter model and use them as initial conditions for simulations of satellite-central interactions. After just one pericentric passage on an orbit with a strong radial component, NIHAO dwarf galaxies can lose up to 80 per~cent of their dark matter content, but, most interestingly, their central ($\approx 8$~kpc) dark matter to stellar ratio changes from a value of ${\sim}25$, as expected from numerical simulations and abundance matching techniques, to roughly unity as reported for NGC1052-DF2 and NGC1054-DF4. The stellar velocity dispersion drops from ${\sim}30$ ${\rm km\,s^{-1}}$ before infall to values as low as $6\pm 2$~ ${\rm km\,s^{-1}}$. These, and the half light radius around 3 kpc, are in good agreement with observations from van Dokkum and collaborators. Our study shows that it is possible to create a galaxy "without" dark matter starting from typical dwarf galaxies formed in a dark matter dominated universe, provided they live in a dense environment., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures. We investigate how the NIHAO galaxies match the observed star formation main sequence (SFMS) and what the origin of its scatter is. The NIHAO galaxies reproduce the SFMS and generally agree with observations, but the slope is about unity and thus significantly larger than observed values. This is because observed galaxies at large stellar masses, although still being part of the SFMS, are already influenced by quenching. This partial suppression of star formation by AGN feedback leads to lower star formation rates and therefore to lower observed slopes. We confirm that including the effects of AGN in our galaxies leads to slopes in agreement with observations. We find the deviation of a galaxy from the SFMS is correlated with its $z=0$ dark matter halo concentration and thus with its halo formation time. This means galaxies with a higher-than-average star formation rate (SFR) form later and vice versa. We explain this apparent correlation with the SFR by re-interpreting galaxies that lie above the SFMS (higher-than-average SFR) as lying to the left of the SFMS (lower-than-average stellar mass) and vice versa. Thus later forming haloes have a lower-than-average stellar mass, this is simply because they have had less-than-average time to form stars, and vice versa. Galaxies, as well as their satellites, are known to form within the cosmic web: the large, multi-scale distribution of matter in the universe. It is known that the surrounding large scale structure (LSS) can impact and influence the formation of galaxies, e.g. the spin and shape of haloes or galaxies are correlated with the LSS and the correlation depends on halo mass or galaxy morphology. In this work, we use group and filament catalogues constructed from the SDSS DR12 to investigate the correlation between satellite systems and the large scale filaments they are located in. We find that the distribution of satellites is significantly correlated with filaments, namely the major axis of the satellite systems are preferentially aligned with the spine of the closest filament. Stronger alignment signals are found for the cases where the system away from the filament spine, while systems close to the filament spine show significantly weaker alignment. Our results suggest that satellites are accreted along filaments, which agrees with previous works. A number of methods for studying the large-scale cosmic matter distribution exist in the literature. One particularly common method employed to define the cosmic web is to examine the density, velocity or potential field. Such methods are advantageous since a Hessian matrix can be constructed whose eigenvectors (and eigenvalues) indicate the principal directions (and strength) of local collapse or expansion. Technically this is achieved by diagonalizing the Hessian matrix using a fixed finite grid. The resultant large-scale structure quantification is thus inherently limited by the grid's finite resolution. Here, we overcome the obstacle of finite grid resolution by introducing a new method to determine halo environment using an adaptive interpolation which is more robust to resolution than the typical "Nearest Grid Point" (NGP) method. Essentially instead of computing and diagonalizing the Hessian matrix once for the entire grid, we suggest doing so once for each halo or galaxy in question. We examine how the eigenvalues and eigenvector direction's computed using our algorithm and the NGP method converge for different grid resolutions, finding that our new method is convergent faster. Namely changes of resolution have a much smaller effect than in the NGP method. It is well known from the Butcher-Oemler effect that galaxies in dense environment are mostly red with little star formation and the fraction of blue galaxies in galaxy groups/clusters also declines rapidly with redshifts. A recent work by Hashimoto et al. reported a local 'blue cluster' with high fraction of blue galaxies ($\sim 0.57$), higher than the model predictions. They ascribed this blue cluster to the feeding of gas along a filamentary structure around the cluster. In this work we use group catalog from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7) and the state-of-art of semi-analytic model (SAM) to investigate the formation of blue clusters in local Universe. In total, we find four blue clusters with halo mass $\sim 10^{14}M_{\odot}$ at $0.02 < z < 0.082$, while only the one found by Hashimoto et al. is in a filamentary structure. The SAM predicts that blue clusters have later formation time and most blue satellite galaxies are recently accreted. We conclude that the formation of blue clusters is mainly governed by newly accreted blue satellites, rather than the effect of large-scale environment., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, accepted by RAA

Quenched massive spiral galaxies have attracted great attention recently, as more data is available to constrain their environment and cold gas content. However, the quenching mechanism is still uncertain, as it depends on the mass range and baryon budget of the galaxy. In this letter, we report the identification of a rare population of very massive, quenched spiral galaxies with stellar mass $\gtrsim10^{11}{\rm~M_\odot}$ and halo mass $\gtrsim10^{13}{\rm~M_\odot}$ from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey at redshift $z\sim0.1$. Our CO observations using the IRAM-30m telescope show that these galaxies contain only a small amount of molecular gas. Similar galaxies are also seen in the state-of-the-art semi-analytical models and hydro-dynamical simulations. It is found from these theoretical models that these quenched spiral galaxies harbor massive black holes, suggesting that feedback from the central black holes has quenched these spiral galaxies. We present a systematic analysis of the reaction of dark matter distribution to galaxy formation across more than eight orders of magnitude in stellar mass. We extend the previous work presented in the NIHAO-IV paper (Tollet et al.) by adding 46 new high resolution simulations of massive galaxies performed with the inclusion of Black Hole feedback. We show that outflows generated by the AGN are able to partially counteract the dark matter contraction due to the large central stellar component in massive haloes. The net effect is to relax the central dark matter distribution that moves to a less cuspy density profiles at halo masses larger than $\approx 3 \times 10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$. The scatter around the mean value of the density profile slope ($\alpha$) is fairly constant ($\Delta\alpha \approx 0.3$), with the exception of galaxies with halo masses around $10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$, at the transition from stellar to AGN feedback dominated systems, where the scatter increases by almost a factor three. We provide useful fitting formulas for the slope of the dark matter density profiles at few percent of the virial radius for the whole stellar mass range: $10^5-10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$ ($2 \times 10^9-5 \times 10^{13}$ M$_{\odot}$ in halo mass)., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

A large number of new members ($\sim$150) of the Cetus Stream (CS) were identified from their clustering features in dynamical space using 6D kinematic data by combining LAMOST DR5 and Gaia DR2 surveys. They map a diffuse structure that extends over at least 100 degrees in the northern and southern Galactic hemispheres, at heliocentric distances between 20 to 50 kpc. Taking advantage of this expanded dataset, we model the stream with a suite of tailored N-body simulations. Our findings exclude the possibility that the NGC 5824 globular cluster is the core of the progenitor of the stream, as postulated by previous studies. Our best models, which successfully reproduce the features of the CS indicate that the progenitor is likely a dwarf galaxy of $\sim$ 2$\times$10$^9$M$_{\odot}$, with a diffuse disc morphology. The merger occured $\sim$ 5 Gyr ago and since then it has experienced approximately eight apo-center passages. Our results suggest that NGC 5824 was either a globular cluster situated off-centre in the dwarf progenitor or, alternatively, it was the nuclear star cluster of another dwarf galaxy that has very similar orbit as the progenitor of the CS. In both scenarios, the progenitor systems would leave streams around NGC 5824, but with distinct distance distributions. To discriminate between these scenarios, the detection and accurate distance measurements of the predicted stream around the GC are crucial, which will be possible in the upcoming LSST era. Our simulations also predict that part of the Southern Cetus stream is very likely the newly discovered Palca stream, and possibly related to another, more diffuse Southern substructure, the Eridanus-Pheonix overdensity., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Theoretical studying of the very inner structure of faint satellite galaxy requires very high-resolution hydro-dynamical simulations with realistic models for star formation, which are beginning to emerge recently. In this work we present an analytical description to model the inner kinematic of satellites in the Milky Way (MW). We use a Monte-Carlo method to produce merger trees for MW mass halo and analytical models to produce stellar mass in the satellite galaxies. We consider two important processes which can significantly modify the inner mass distribution in satellite galaxy. The first is baryonic feedback which can induce a flat inner profile depending on the star formation efficiency in the galaxy. The second is the tidal stripping to reduce and re-distribute the mass inside satellite. We apply this model to MW satellite galaxies in both CDM and thermal relic WDM models. It is found that tidal heating must be effective to produce a relatively flat distribution of the satellite circular velocities, to agree with the data. The constraint on WDM mass depends on the host halo mass. For a MW halo with dark matter mass lower than $2\times 10^{12}M_{\odot}$, a 2 keV WDM model can be safely excluded as the predicted satellite circular velocities are systematically lower than the data. For WDM with mass of 3.5 keV, it requires the MW halo mass to be larger than $1.5\times 10^{12}M_{\odot}$, otherwise the 3.5 Kev model can also be excluded. We present a Bayesian Stacking technique to directly measure the HI mass function (HIMF) and its evolution with redshift using galaxies formally below the nominal detection threshold. We generate galaxy samples over several sky areas given an assumed HIMF described by a Schechter function and simulate the HI emission lines with different levels of background noise to test the technique. We use Multinest to constrain the parameters of the HIMF in a broad redshift bin, demonstrating that the HIMF can be accurately reconstructed, using the simulated spectral cube far below the HI mass limit determined by the $5\sigma$ flux-density limit, i.e. down to $M_{\rm HI} = 10^{7.5}$ M$_{\odot}$ over the redshift range $0 < z < 0.55$ for this particular simulation, with a noise level similar to that expected for the MIGHTEE survey. We also find that the constraints on the parameters of the Schechter function, $\phi_{\star}$, $M_\star$ and $\alpha$ can be reliably fit, becoming tighter as the background noise decreases as expected, although the constraints on the redshift evolution are not significantly affected. All the parameters become better constrained as the survey area increases. In summary, we provide an optimal method for estimating the HI mass at cosmological distances that allows us to constrain the HI mass function below the detection threshold in forthcoming HI surveys. Observational work have shown that the two brightest satellite galaxies of the Milky Way (MW), the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), are rare amongst MW analogues. It is then interesting to know whether the presence of massive satellite has any effect on the whole satellite population in MW analogues. In this article, we investigate this problem using a semi-analytical model combined with the Millennium-II Simulation. MW-analogous galaxies are defined to have similar stellar mass or dark matter halo mass to the MW. We find that, in the first case, the halo mass is larger and there are, on average, twice as many satellites in Milky Way analogs if there is a massive satellite galaxy in the system. This is mainly from the halo formation bias. The difference is smaller if MW analogues are selected using halo mass. We also find that the satellites distribution is slightly asymmetric, being more concentrated on the line connecting the central galaxy and the massive satellite and that, on average, LMC have brought in 14.7 satellite galaxies with $M_{r}<0$ at its accretion, among which 4.5 satellites are still within a distance of 50kpc from the LMC. Considering other satellites, we predict that thereare 7.8 satellites with 50kpc of the LMC. By comparing our model with the early data of Satellites Around Galactic Analogs (SAGA), a survey to observe satellite galaxies around 100 Milky Way analogues, we find that SAGA has more bright satellites and less faint satellites than our model predictions. Following Cui et al. 2018 (hereafter Paper I) on the classification of large-scale environments (LSE) at z = 0, we push our analysis to higher redshifts and study the evolution of LSE and the baryon distributions in them. Our aim is to investigate how baryons affect the LSE as a function of redshift. In agreement with Paper I, the baryon models have negligible effect on the LSE over all investigated redshifts. We further validate the conclusion obtained in Paper I that the gas web is an unbiased tracer of total matter -- even better at high redshifts. By separating the gas mainly by temperature, we find that about 40 per cent of gas is in the so-called warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM). This fraction of gas mass in the WHIM decreases with redshift, especially from z = 1 (29 per cent) to z = 2.1 (10 per cent). By separating the whole WHIM gas mass into the four large-scale environments (i.e. voids, sheets, filaments, and knots), we find that about half of the WHIM gas is located in filaments. Although the total gas mass in WHIM decreases with redshift, the WHIM mass fractions in the different LSE seem unchanged., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, published version in MNRAS. We have used the NIHAO simulations to explore how supernovae (SNe) affect star formation in galaxies. We find that SN feedback operates on all scales from the interstellar medium (ISM) to several virial radii. SNe regulate star formation by preventing condensation of HI into H$_2$ and by moving cold neutral gas to the hot HII phase. The first effect explains why the cold neutral gas in dwarf galaxies forms stars inefficiently. The second maintains the hot ISM of massive galaxies (HII vents out at lower masses). At $v_{\rm vir}\simeq 67{\rm\,km\,s}^{-1}$, the outflow rate follows the relation: $\dot{M}_{\rm out}=23\,(v_{\rm vir}/67{\rm\,km\,s}^{-1})^{-4.6}\,{\rm SFR}$. $20\%$ to $70\%$ of the gas expelled from galaxies escapes from the halo (ejective feedback) but outflows are dominated by cold swept-up gas, most of which falls back onto the galaxy on a $\sim 1\,$Gyr timescale. This `fountain feedback' reduces the masses of galaxies by a factor of two to four, since gas spends half to three quarter of its time in the fountain. Less than $10\%$ of the ejected gas mixes with the hot circumgalactic medium and this gas is usually not reaccreted. On scales as large as $6r_{\rm vir}$, galactic winds divert the incoming gas from cosmic filaments and prevent if from accreting onto galaxies (pre-emptive feedback). We choose the bright compact group HCG 62, which was found to exhibit both excess X-ray emission and high Fe abundance to the southwest of its core, as an example to study the impact of mergers on chemical enrichment in the intragroup medium. We first reanalyze the high-quality Chandra and XMM-Newton archive data to search for the evidence for additional SN II yields, which is expected as a direct result of the possible merger-induced starburst. We reveal that, similar to the Fe abundance, the Mg abundance also shows a high value in both the innermost region and the southwest substructure, forming a high-abundance plateau, meanwhile all the SN Ia and SN II yields show rather flat distributions in $>0.1r_{200}$ in favor of an early enrichment. Then we carry out a series of idealized numerical simulations to model the collision of two initially isolated galaxy groups by using the TreePM-SPH GADGET-3 code. We find that the observed X-ray emission and metal distributions, as well as the relative positions of the two bright central galaxies with reference to the X-ray peak, can be well reproduced in a major merger with a mass ratio of 3 when the merger-induced starburst is assumed. The `best-match' snapshot is pinpointed after the third pericentric passage when the southwest substructure is formed due to gas sloshing. By following the evolution of the simulated merging system, we conclude that the effects of such a major merger on chemical enrichment are mostly restricted within the core region when the final relaxed state is reached., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We study the origin of bulge stars and their angular momentum (AM) evolution in 10 spiral galaxies with baryonic masses above $10^{10}$M$_\odot$ in the NIHAO galaxy formation simulations. The simulated galaxies are in good agreement with observations of the relation between specific AM and mass of the baryonic component and the stellar bulge-to-total ratio ($B/T$). We divide the star particles at $z=0$ into disc and bulge components using a hybrid photometric/kinematic decomposition method that identifies all central mass above an exponential disc profile as the `bulge'. By tracking the bulge star particles back in time, we find that on average 95\% of the bulge stars formed {\it in situ}, 3\% formed {\it ex situ} in satellites of the same halo, and only 2\% formed {\it ex situ} in external galaxies. The evolution of the AM distribution of the bulge stars paints an interesting picture: the higher the final $B/T$ ratio, the more the specific AM remains preserved during the bulge formation. In all cases, bulge stars migrate significantly towards the central region, reducing their average galactocentric radius by roughly a factor 2, independently of the final $B/T$ value. However, in the higher $B/T$ ($\gtrsim0.2$) objects, the velocity of the bulge stars increases and the AM of the bulge is almost conserved, whereas at lower $B/T$ values, the velocity of the bulge stars decreases and the AM of bulge reduces. The correlation between the spins of dark matter halos and the large-scale structure (LSS) has been studied in great detail over a large redshift range, while investigations of galaxies are still incomplete. Motivated by this point, we use the state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulation, Illustris-1, to investigate mainly the spin--LSS correlation of galaxies at redshift of $z=0$. We mainly find that the spins of low-mass, blue, oblate galaxies are preferentially aligned with the slowest collapsing direction ($e_3$) of the large-scale tidal field, while massive, red, prolate galaxy spins tend to be perpendicular to $e_3$. The transition from a parallel to a perpendicular trend occurs at $\sim10^{9.4} M_{\odot}/h$ in the stellar mass, $\sim0.62$ in the g-r color, and $\sim0.4$ in triaxiality. The transition stellar mass decreases with increasing redshifts. The alignment was found to be primarily correlated with the galaxy stellar mass. Our results are consistent with previous studies both in N-body simulations and observations. We analyze 88 independent high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations of disk galaxies in the NIHAO simulations suite to explore the connection between the atomic gas fraction and angular momentum of baryons throughout cosmic time. The study is motivated by the analytic model of \citet{obreschkow16}, which predicts a relation between the atomic gas fraction $f_{\rm atm}$ and the global atomic stability parameter $q \equiv j\sigma / (GM)$, where $M$ and $j$ are the mass and specific angular momentum of the galaxy (stars+cold gas) and $\sigma$ is the velocity dispersion of the atomic gas. We show that the simulated galaxies follow this relation from their formation ($z\simeq4$) to present within $\sim 0.5$ dex. To explain this behavior, we explore the evolution of the local Toomre stability and find that $90\%$--$100\%$ of the atomic gas in all simulated galaxies is stable at any time. In other words, throughout the entire epoch of peak star formation until today, the timescale for accretion is longer than the timescale to reach equilibrium, thus resulting in a quasi-static equilibrium of atomic gas at any time. Hence, the evolution of $f_{\rm atm}$ depends on the complex hierarchical growth history primarily via the evolution of $q$.
