This paper compares Julia reduction and hyperbolic reduction with the aim of finding equivalent binary forms with minimal coefficients. We demonstrate that hyperbolic reduction generally outperforms Julia reduction, particularly in the cases of sextics and decimics, though neither method guarantees achieving the minimal form. We further propose an additional shift and scaling to approximate the minimal form more closely. Finally, we introduce a machine learning framework to identify optimal transformations that minimize the heights of binary forms. This study provides new insights into the geometry and algebra of binary forms and highlights the potential of AI in advancing symbolic computation and reduction techniques. The findings, supported by extensive computational experiments, lay the groundwork for hybrid approaches that integrate traditional reduction methods with data-driven techniques.

In this paper, we provide algorithmic methods for conducting exhaustive searches for periodic Golay pairs. Our methods enumerate several lengths beyond the currently known state-of-the-art available searches: we conducted exhaustive searches for periodic Golay pairs of all lengths $v \leq 72$ using our methods, while only lengths $v \leq 34$ had previously been exhaustively enumerated. Our methods are applicable to periodic complementary sequences in general. We utilize sequence compression, a method of sequence generation derived in 2013 by Djokovi\'c and Kotsireas. We also introduce and implement a new method of "multi-level" compression, where sequences are uncompressed in several steps. This method allowed us to exhaustively search all lengths $v \leq 72$ using less than 10 CPU years. For cases of complementary sequences where uncompression is not possible, we introduce some new methods of sequence generation inspired by the isomorph-free exhaustive generation algorithm of orderly generation. Finally, we pose a conjecture regarding the structure of periodic Golay pairs and prove it holds in many lengths, including all lengths $v \lt 100$. We demonstrate the usefulness of our algorithms by providing the first ever examples of periodic Golay pairs of length $v = 90$. The smallest length for which the existence of periodic Golay pairs is undecided is now $106$.

We introduce quaternary Legendre pairs of length $\ell$. In contrast to binary Legendre pairs they can exist for even $\ell$ as well. First we show that they are pertinent to the construction of quaternary Hadamard matrices of order $2\ell+2$ and thus of binary Hadamard matrices of order $4\ell+4$. Then for a prime $p>2$ we present a construction of a pair of sequences of length $p$ from which we can derive quaternary Legendre pairs of length $\ell=2p$ by decompression for $p=3,5,7,13,19,31,41$. Moreover, we give also constructions of Legendre pairs of length $\ell$ for all remaining even $\ell\le 24$.

Our objectives with this survey are to synthesize pertinent literature in this field by presenting a thorough description and analysis of the known methods capable of finding one or many solutions to SNEs, and to assist interested readers seeking to identify solution techniques which are well suited for solving the various classes of SNEs which one may encounter in real world applications. To accomplish these objectives, we present a multi-part survey. In part one, we focused on root-finding approaches which can be used to search for solutions to a SNE without transforming it into an optimization problem. In part two, we introduce the various transformations which have been utilized to transform a SNE into an optimization problem, and we discuss optimization algorithms which can then be used to search for solutions. We emphasize the important characteristics of each method, and we discuss promising directions for future research. In part three, we will present a robust quantitative comparative analysis of methods capable of searching for solutions to SNEs.

By assuming a type of balance for length $\ell=87$ and non-trivial subgroups of multiplier groups of Legendre pairs (LPs) for length $\ell=85$, we find LPs of these lengths. We then study the power spectral density (PSD) values of m-compressions of LPs of length 5m. We also formulate a conjecture for Legendre pairs of lengths $\ell \equiv 0$ (mod 5) and demonstrate how it can be used to decrease the search space and storage requirements for finding such LPs. The newly found LPs decrease the number of integers in the range $\leq 200$ for which the existence question of LPs remains unsolved from 12 to 10.

We provide a search method for Legendre pairs of composite length based on generating binary matrices with fixed row and column sums from compressed, complementary integer vectors. This approach yielded the first construction of a Legendre pair of length $77$, as well as the first exhaustive generation of Legendre pairs of length $55$., Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure. We prove a proposition that connects constant-PAF sequences and the corresponding Legendre pairs with integer PSD values. We show how to determine explicitly the complete spectrum of the $(\ell/3)$-rd value of the discrete Fourier transform for Legendre pairs of lengths $\ell \equiv 0 \, (\mod 3)$. This is accomplished by two new algorithms based on number-theoretic arguments. As an application, we prove that Legendre pairs of the open lengths 117, 129, 133, and 147 exist by finding Legendre pairs of these lengths with a multiplier group of order at least 3. As a consequence, 85, 87, 115, 145, 159, 161, 169, 175, 177, 185, 187, 195 are the twelve integers in the range < 200 for which the question of existence of Legendre pairs remains unsolved.

In 1989, computer searches by Lam, Thiel, and Swiercz experimentally resolved Lam's problem from projective geometry$\unicode{x2014}$the long-standing problem of determining if a projective plane of order ten exists. Both the original search and an independent verification in 2011 discovered no such projective plane. However, these searches were each performed using highly specialized custom-written code and did not produce nonexistence certificates. In this paper, we resolve Lam's problem by translating the problem into Boolean logic and use satisfiability (SAT) solvers to produce nonexistence certificates that can be verified by a third party. A Formal Orthogonal Pair is a pair $(A,B)$ of symbolic rectangular matrices such that $AB^T=0$. It can be applied for the construction of Hadamard and Weighing matrices. In this paper we introduce a systematic way for constructing such pairs. Our method involves Representation Theory and Group Cohomology. The orthogonality property is a consequence of non-vanishing maps between certain cohomology groups. This construction has strong connections to the theory of Association Schemes and (weighted) Coherent Configurations. Our techniques are also capable for producing (anti-) amicable pairs. A handful of examples are given.

In 1983, a computer search was performed for ovals in a projective plane of order ten. The search was exhaustive and negative, implying that such ovals do not exist. However, no nonexistence certificates were produced by this search, and to the best of our knowledge the search has never been independently verified. In this paper, we rerun the search for ovals in a projective plane of order ten and produce a collection of nonexistence certificates that, when taken together, imply that such ovals do not exist. In the 1970s and 1980s, searches performed by L. Carter, C. Lam, L. Thiel, and S. Swiercz showed that projective planes of order ten with weight 16 codewords do not exist. These searches required highly specialized and optimized computer programs and required about 2,000 hours of computing time on mainframe and supermini computers. In 2011, these searches were verified by D. Roy using an optimized C program and 16,000 hours on a cluster of desktop machines. We performed a verification of these searches by reducing the problem to the Boolean satisfiability problem (SAT). Our verification uses the cube-and-conquer SAT solving paradigm, symmetry breaking techniques using the computer algebra system Maple, and a result of Carter that there are ten nonisomorphic cases to check. Using techniques from the fields of symbolic computation and satisfiability checking we verify one of the cases used in the landmark result that projective planes of order ten do not exist. In particular, we show that there exist no projective planes of order ten that generate codewords of weight fifteen, a result first shown in 1973 via an exhaustive computer search. We provide a simple satisfiability (SAT) instance and a certificate of unsatisfiability that can be used to automatically verify this result for the first time. All previous demonstrations of this result have relied on search programs that are difficult or impossible to verify---in fact, our search found partial projective planes that were missed by previous searches due to previously undiscovered bugs. Furthermore, we show how the performance of the SAT solver can be dramatically increased by employing functionality from a computer algebra system (CAS). We use techniques from the fields of computer algebra and satisfiability checking to develop a new algorithm to search for complex Golay pairs. We implement this algorithm and use it to perform a complete search for complex Golay pairs of lengths up to 28. In doing so, we find that complex Golay pairs exist in the lengths 24 and 26 but do not exist in the lengths 23, 25, 27, and 28. This independently verifies work done by F. Fiedler in 2013 and confirms the 2002 conjecture of Craigen, Holzmann, and Kharaghani that complex Golay pairs of length 23 don't exist. Our algorithm is based on the recently proposed SAT+CAS paradigm of combining SAT solvers with computer algebra systems to efficiently search large spaces specified by both algebraic and logical constraints. The algorithm has two stages: first, a fine-tuned computer program uses functionality from computer algebra systems and numerical libraries to construct a list containing every sequence which could appear as the first sequence in a complex Golay pair up to equivalence. Second, a programmatic SAT solver constructs every sequence (if any) that pair off with the sequences constructed in the first stage to form a complex Golay pair. In this paper, we provide an overview of the SAT+CAS method that combines satisfiability checkers (SAT solvers) and computer algebra systems (CAS) to resolve combinatorial conjectures, and present new results vis-\`a-vis best matrices. The SAT+CAS method is a variant of the Davis$\unicode{8211}$Putnam$\unicode{8211}$Logemann$\unicode{8211}$Loveland $\operatorname{DPLL}(T)$ architecture, where the $T$ solver is replaced by a CAS. We describe how the SAT+CAS method has been previously used to resolve many open problems from graph theory, combinatorial design theory, and number theory, showing that the method has broad applications across a variety of fields. Additionally, we apply the method to construct the largest best matrices yet known and present new skew Hadamard matrices constructed from best matrices. We show the best matrix conjecture (that best matrices exist in all orders of the form $r^2+r+1$) which was previously known to hold for $r\leq6$ also holds for $r=7$. Over the last few decades, many distinct lines of research aimed at automating mathematics have been developed, including computer algebra systems (CASs) for mathematical modelling, automated theorem provers for first-order logic, SAT/SMT solvers aimed at program verification, and higher-order proof assistants for checking mathematical proofs. More recently, some of these lines of research have started to converge in complementary ways. One success story is the combination of SAT solvers and CASs (SAT+CAS) aimed at resolving mathematical conjectures. Many conjectures in pure and applied mathematics are not amenable to traditional proof methods. Instead, they are best addressed via computational methods that involve very large combinatorial search spaces. SAT solvers are powerful methods to search through such large combinatorial spaces---consequently, many problems from a variety of mathematical domains have been reduced to SAT in an attempt to resolve them. However, solvers traditionally lack deep repositories of mathematical domain knowledge that can be crucial to pruning such large search spaces. By contrast, CASs are deep repositories of mathematical knowledge but lack efficient general search capabilities. By combining the search power of SAT with the deep mathematical knowledge in CASs we can solve many problems in mathematics that no other known methods seem capable of solving. We demonstrate the success of the SAT+CAS paradigm by highlighting many conjectures that have been disproven, verified, or partially verified using our tool MathCheck. These successes indicate that the paradigm is positioned to become a standard method for solving problems requiring both a significant amount of search and deep mathematical reasoning. In this article we demonstrate how to solve a variety of problems and puzzles using the built-in SAT solver of the computer algebra system Maple. Once the problems have been encoded into Boolean logic, solutions can be found (or shown to not exist) automatically, without the need to implement any search algorithm. In particular, we describe how to solve the $n$-queens problem, how to generate and solve Sudoku puzzles, how to solve logic puzzles like the Einstein riddle, how to solve the 15-puzzle, how to solve the maximum clique problem, and finding Graeco-Latin squares., Comment: To appear in Proceedings of the Maple Conference 2019

We present new constructions for perfect and odd perfect sequences over the quaternion group $Q_8$. In particular, we show for the first time that perfect and odd perfect quaternion sequences exist in all lengths $2^t$ for $t\geq0$. In doing so we disprove the quaternionic form of Mow's conjecture that the longest perfect $Q_8$-sequence that can be constructed from an orthogonal array construction is of length 64. Furthermore, we use a connection to combinatorial design theory to prove the existence of a new infinite class of Williamson sequences, showing that Williamson sequences of length $2^t n$ exist for all $t\geq0$ when Williamson sequences of odd length $n$ exist. We enumerate all circulant good matrices with odd orders divisible by 3 up to order 70. As a consequence of this we find a previously overlooked set of good matrices of order 27 and a new set of good matrices of order 57. We also find that circulant good matrices do not exist in the orders 51, 63, and 69, thereby finding three new counterexamples to the conjecture that such matrices exist in all odd orders. Additionally, we prove a new relationship between the entries of good matrices and exploit this relationship in our enumeration algorithm. Our method applies the SAT+CAS paradigm of combining computer algebra functionality with modern SAT solvers to efficiently search large spaces which are specified by both algebraic and logical constraints.

We provide a complete enumeration of all complex Golay pairs of length up to 25, verifying that complex Golay pairs do not exist in lengths 23 and 25 but do exist in length 24. This independently verifies work done by F. Fiedler in 2013 that confirms the 2002 conjecture of Craigen, Holzmann, and Kharaghani that complex Golay pairs of length 23 don't exist. We employ tools from the fields of symbolic computation and satisfiability checking---namely, computer algebra systems and SAT solvers---to study the Williamson conjecture from combinatorial design theory and increase the bounds to which Williamson matrices have been enumerated. In particular, we completely enumerate all Williamson matrices of even order up to and including 70 which gives us deeper insight into the behaviour and distribution of Williamson matrices. We find that, in contrast to the case when the order is odd, Williamson matrices of even order are quite plentiful and exist in every even order up to and including 70. As a consequence of this and a new construction for 8-Williamson matrices we construct 8-Williamson matrices in all odd orders up to and including 35. We additionally enumerate all Williamson matrices whose orders are divisible by 3 and less than 70, finding one previously unknown set of Williamson matrices of order 63., Comment: To appear in the Journal of Symbolic Computation

We single out a class of difference families which is widely used in some constructions of Hadamard matrices and which we call Goethals--Seidel (GS) difference families. They consist of four subsets (base blocks) of a finite abelian group of order $v$, which can be used to construct Hadamard matrices via the well-known Goethals--Seidel array. We consider the special class of these families in cyclic groups, where each base block is either symmetric or skew. We omit the well-known case where all four blocks are symmetric. By extending previous computations by several authors, we complete the classification of GS-difference families of this type for odd $v<50$. In particular, we have constructed the first examples of so called good matrices, G-matrices and best matrices of order 43, and good matrices and G-matrices of order 45. Our main objective is to show that the computational methods that we previously developed to search for difference families in cyclic groups can be fully extended to the more general case of arbitrary finite abelian groups. In this work, we propose an optimization approach for constructing various classes of circulant combinatorial designs that can be defined in terms of autocorrelations. The problem is formulated as a so-called feasibility problem having three sets, to which the Douglas-Rachford projection algorithm is applied. The approach is illustrated on three different classes of circulant combinatorial designs: circulant weighing matrices, D-optimal matrices, and Hadamard matrices with two circulant cores. Furthermore, we explicitly construct two new circulant weighing matrices, a $CW(126,64)$ and a $CW(198,100)$, whose existence was previously marked as unresolved in the most recent version of Strassler's table.

The search of binary sequences with low auto-correlations (LABS) is a discrete combinatorial optimization problem contained in the NP-hard computational complexity class. We study this problem using Warning Propagation (WP) , a message passing algorithm, and compare the performance of the algorithm in the original problem and in two different disordered versions. We show that in all the cases Warning Propagation converges to low energy minima of the solution space. Our results highlight the importance of the local structure of the interaction graph of the variables for the convergence time of the algorithm and for the quality of the solutions obtained by WP. While in general the algorithm does not provide the optimal solutions in large systems it does provide, in polynomial time, solutions that are energetically similar to the optimal ones. Moreover, we designed hybrid models that interpolate between the standard LABS problem and the disordered versions of it, and exploit them to improved the convergence time of WP and the quality of the solutions.

Functional iterations such as Newton's are a popular tool for polynomial root-finding. We consider realistic situation where some (e.g., better-conditioned) roots have already been approximated and where further computations is directed to approximation of the remaining roots. Such situation is also realistic for root-finding by means of subdivision. A natural approach of applying explicit deflation has been much studied and recently advanced by one of the authors of this paper, but presently we contribute to the alternative approach of applying implicit deflation, which we combine with mapping the variable and reversion of an input polynomial. We also show another unexplored direction for substantial further progress in this long and extensively studied area. Namely we dramatically increase their local efficiency by means of the incorporation of fast algorithms for multipoint polynomial evaluation and Fast Multipole Method., Comment: 15 pages

We examine implicit representations of parametric or point cloud models, based on interpolation matrices, which are not sensitive to base points. We show how interpolation matrices can be used for ray shooting of a parametric ray with a surface patch, including the case of high-multiplicity intersections. Most matrix operations are executed during pre-processing since they solely depend on the surface. For a given ray, the bottleneck is equation solving. Our Maple code handles bicubic patches in $\le 1$~sec, though numerical issues might arise. Our second contribution is to extend the method to parametric space curves and, generally, to codimension $> 1$, by computing the equations of (hyper)surfaces intersecting precisely at the given object. By means of Chow forms, we propose a new, practical, randomized algorithm that always produces correct output but possibly with a non-minimal number of surfaces. For space curves, we obtain 3 surfaces whose polynomials are of near-optimal degree; in this case, computation reduces to a Sylvester resultant. We illustrate our algorithm through a series of examples and compare our Maple prototype with other methods implemented in Maple i.e., Groebner basis and implicit matrix representations. Our Maple prototype is not faster but yields fewer equations and seems more robust than Maple's {\tt implicitize}; it is also comparable with the other methods for degrees up to 6.

We construct several cyclic $(v;k_1,k_2,k_3;\lambda)$ difference families with $v\equiv3 \pmod{4}$ a prime and $\lambda=k_1+k_2+k_3-(3v-1)/4$. Such families can be used in conjunction with the well-known Paley-Todd difference sets to construct skew-Hadamard matrices of order $4v$. We study the motion of a secondary celestial body under the influence of the corrected gravitational force of a primary. We study the effect of quantum and relativistic corrections to the gravitational potential of a primary body acting on the orbiting body. More specifically, two equations are derived to approximate the perigee/perihelion/periastron time rate of change and its total variation over one revolution (i.e., the difference between the anomalistic period and the Keplerian period) under the influence of the quantum as well as post- Newtonian accelerations. We construct new symmetric Hadamard matrices of orders $92,116$, and $172$. While the existence of those of order $92$ was known since 1978, the orders $116$ and $172$ are new. Our construction is based on a recent new combinatorial array discovered by N. A. Balonin and J. Seberry. For order $116$ we used an adaptation of an algorithm for parallel collision search. The adaptation pertains to the modification of some aspects of the algorithm to make it suitable to solve a 3-way matching problem. We also point out that a new infinite series of symmetric Hadamard matrices arises by plugging into the GP array the matrices constructed by Xia, Xia, Seberry, and Wu in 2005., Comment: 9 pages, to appear in Special Matrices Vol. 3

We construct supplementary difference sets (SDS) with parameters $(59;28,22;21)$, $(69;31,27;24)$, $(75;36,29;28)$, $(77;34,31;27)$ and $(87;38,36;31)$. These SDSs give D-optimal designs (DO-designs) of two-circulant type of orders 118,138,150,154 and 174. Until now, no DO-designs of orders 138,154 and 174 were known. While a DO-design (not of two-circulant type) of order 150 was constructed previously by Holzmann and Kharaghani, no such design of two-circulant type was known. The smallest undecided order for DO-designs is now 198. A $k$-ary charm bracelet is an equivalence class of length $n$ strings with the action on the indices by the additive group of the ring of integers modulo $n$ extended by the group of units. Periodic Golay pairs are a generalization of ordinary Golay pairs. They can be used to construct Hadamard matrices. A positive integer $v$ is a (periodic) Golay number if there exists a (periodic) Golay pair of length $v$. Taking into the account the results obtained in this note and an yet unpublished new result, there are only seven known periodic Golay numbers which are definitely not Golay numbers, namely 34,50,58,68,72,74,82. We construct here periodic Golay pairs of lengths 74,122,164,202,226. It is apparently unknown whether 122,164,202,226 are Golay numbers. A collection of complex sequences of length v is complementary if the sum of their periodic autocorrelation function values at all non-zero shifts is constant. For a complex sequence A=[a_0,a_1,...,a_{v-1}] of length v=dm we define the m-compressed sequence A^{(d)} of length d whose terms are the sums a_i + a_{i+d} + ... + a_{i+(m-1)d}. We prove that the m-compression of a complementary collection of sequences is also complementary. The compression procedure can be used to simplify the construction of complementary {+1,-1}-sequences of composite length. In particular, we construct several supplementary difference sets (v;r,s;lambda) with v even and lambda=(r+s)-v/2, given here for the first time. There are 15 normalized parameter sets (v;r,s;lambda) with v <= 50 for which the existence question was open. We resolve all but one of these cases., Comment: 15 pages

We construct Hadamard matrices of orders 4x251 = 1004 and 4x631 = 2524, and skew-Hadamard matrices of orders 4x213 = 852 and 4x631 = 2524. As far as we know, such matrices have not been constructed previously. The constructions use the Goethals-Seidel array, suitable supplementary difference sets on a cyclic group and a new efficient matching algorithm based on hashing techniques., Comment: 8 pages
