Random matrix theory has proven very successful in the understanding of the spectra of chaotic systems. Depending on symmetry with respect to time reversal and the presence or absence of a spin 1/2 there are three ensembles, the Gaussian orthogonal (GOE), Gaussian unitary (GUE), and Gaussian symplectic (GSE) one. With a further particle-antiparticle symmetry the chiral variants of these ensembles, the chiral orthogonal, unitary, and symplectic ensembles (the BDI, AIII, and CII in Cartan's notation) appear which are the main point of interest in this paper. Following a recently published work on chiral random matrix ensembles and their experimental realizations (Rehemanjiang et al., PRL 124, 116801 (2020)), this is achieved by using dielectric cylinders placed between two parallel aluminium plates. These cylinders act as microwave resonators which are used to create tight-binding chains of finite length up to N=5. The different ensembles are achieved by using different types of couplings: For the orthogonal case spatial proximity is used, for the unitary case microwave circulators are used, and for the symplectic case a combination of circulators and cables is used to create the necessary symmetry. In all cases the predicted repulsion behavior between positive and negative eigenvalues for energies close to zero are verified by a comparison with theory taking the finite size of the systems into account. We will show that the difference to the expected universal behavior is given by logarithmic corrections only. These corrections stem from the Hamiltonians having zero entries in their off-diagonal blocks., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures

Transmission measurements through three-port microwave graphs are performed in a symmetric setting, in analogy to three-terminal voltage drop devices with orthogonal, unitary, and symplectic symmetry. The terminal used as a probe is symmetrically located between two chaotic graphs, each graph is connected to one port, the input and the output, respectively. The analysis of the experimental data exhibit the weak localization and antilocalization phenomena in a clear fashion. We find a good agreement with theoretical predictions, provided that the effect of dissipation and imperfect coupling to the ports are taken into account.

The Landauer-B\"uttiker formalism establishes an equivalence between the electrical conduction through a device, e.g., a quantum dot, and the transmission. Guided by this analogy we perform transmission measurements through three-port microwave graphs with orthogonal, unitary, and symplectic symmetry thus mimicking three-terminal voltage drop devices. One of the ports is placed as input and a second one as output, while a third port is used as a probe. Analytical predictions show good agreement with the measurements in the presence of orthogonal and unitary symmetries, provided that the absorption and the influence of the coupling port are taken into account. The symplectic symmetry is realized in specifically designed graphs mimicking spin 1/2 systems. Again a good agreement between experiment and theory is found. For the symplectic case the results are marginally sensitive to absorption and coupling strength of the port, in contrast to the orthogonal and unitary case., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Following an idea by Joyner et al. [EPL, 107 (2014) 50004] a microwave graph with antiunitary symmetry T obeying T^2=-1 has been realized. The Kramers doublets expected for such systems have been clearly identified and could be lifted by a perturbation which breaks the antiunitary symmetry. The observed spectral level spacings distribution of the Kramers doublets is in agreement with the predictions from the Gaussian symplectic ensemble (GSE), expected for chaotic systems with such a symmetry. In addition results on the two-point correlation function, the spectral form factor, the number variance and the spectral rigidity are presented, as well as on the transition from GSE to GOE statistics by continuously changing T from T^2=-1 to T^2=1., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

We propose a concept of chiral photonic limiters utilising topologically protected localised midgap defect states in a photonic waveguide. The chiral symmetry alleviates the effects of structural imperfections and guaranties a high level of resonant transmission for low intensity radiation. At high intensity, the light-induced absorption can suppress the localised modes, along with the resonant transmission. In this case the entire photonic structure becomes highly reflective within a broad frequency range, thus increasing dramatically the damage threshold of the limiter. Here we demonstrate experimentally the principle of operation of such photonic structures using a waveguide consisting of coupled dielectric microwave resonators., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The effective Hamiltonian formalism is extended to vectorial electromagnetic waves in order to describe statistical properties of the field in reverberation chambers. The latter are commonly used in electromagnetic compatibility tests. As a first step, the distribution of wave intensities in chaotic systems with varying opening in the weak coupling limit for scalar quantum waves is derived by means of random matrix theory. In this limit the only parameters are the modal overlap and the number of open channels. Using the extended effective Hamiltonian, we describe the intensity statistics of the vectorial electromagnetic eigenmodes of lossy reverberation chambers. Finally, the typical quantity of interest in such chambers, namely, the distribution of the electromagnetic response, is discussed. By determining the distribution of the phase rigidity, describing the coupling to the environment, using random matrix numerical data, we find good agreement between the theoretical prediction and numerical calculations of the response., Comment: 13 pages , 8 figures

This article presents a study of the electromagnetic response of a chaotic reverberation chamber (RC) in the presence of losses. By means of simulations and of experiments, the fluctuations in the maxima of the field obtained in a conventional mode-stirred RC are compared with those in a chaotic RC in the neighborhood of the Lowest Useable Frequency (LUF). The present work illustrates that the universal spectral and spatial statistical properties of chaotic RCs allow to meet more adequately the criteria required by the Standard IEC 61000-4-21 to perform tests of electromagnetic compatibility., Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures

The change of resonance widths in an open system under a perturbation of its interior has been recently introduced by Fyodorov and Savin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 184101 (2012)] as a sensitive indicator of the nonorthogonality of resonance states. We experimentally study universal statistics of this quantity in weakly open two-dimensional microwave cavities and reverberation chambers realizing scalar and electromagnetic vector fields, respectively. We consider global as well as local perturbations, and also extend the theory to treat the latter case. The influence of the perturbation type on the width shift distribution is more pronounced for many-channel systems. We compare the theory to experimental results for one and two attached antennas and to numerical simulations with higher channel numbers, observing a good agreement in all cases., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The recent realization of topological phases in insulators and superconductors has advanced the quest for robust quantum technologies. The prospects to implement the underlying topological features controllably has given incentive to explore optical platforms for analogous realizations. Here we realize a topologically induced defect state in a chain of dielectric microwave resonators and show that the functionality of the system can be enhanced by supplementing topological protection with non-hermitian symmetries that do not have an electronic counterpart. We draw on a characteristic topological feature of the defect state, namely, that it breaks a sublattice symmetry. This isolates the state from losses that respect parity-time symmetry, which enhances its visibility relative to all other states both in the frequency and in the time domain. The influence of absorption on the spectra of microwave graphs has been studied experimentally. The microwave networks were made up of coaxial cables and T junctions. First, absorption was introduced by attaching a 50 Ohm load to an additional vertex for graphs with and without time-reversal symmetry. The resulting level-spacing distributions were compared with a generalization of the Wigner surmise in the presence of open channels proposed recently by Poli et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 174101 (2012)]. Good agreement was found using an effective coupling parameter. Second, absorption was introduced along one individual bond via a variable microwave attenuator, and the influence of absorption on the length spectrum was studied. The peak heights in the length spectra corresponding to orbits avoiding the absorber were found to be independent of the attenuation, whereas, the heights of the peaks belonging to orbits passing the absorber once or twice showed the expected decrease with increasing attenuation., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

In ballistic open quantum systems one often observes that the resonances in the complex-energy plane form a clear chain structure. Taking the open 3-disk system as a paradigmatic model system, we investigate how this chain structure is reflected in the resonance states and how it is connected to the underlying classical dynamics. Using an efficient scattering approach we observe that resonance states along one chain are clearly correlated while resonance states of different chains show an anticorrelation. Studying the phase space representations of the resonance states we find that their localization in phase space oscillate between different regions of the classical trapped set as one moves along the chains and that these oscillations are connected to a modulation of the resonance spacing. A single resonance chain is thus no WKB quantization of a single periodic orbits, but the structure of several oscillating chains arises from the interaction of several periodic orbits. We illuminate the physical mechanism behind these findings by combining the semiclassical cycle expansion with a quantum graph model., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures

Waves propagating through a weakly scattering random medium show a pronounced branching of the flow accompanied by the formation of freak waves, i.e., extremely intense waves. Theory predicts that this strong fluctuation regime is accompanied by its own fundamental length scale of transport in random media, parametrically different from the mean free path or the localization length. We show numerically how the scintillation index can be used to assess the scaling behavior of the branching length. We report the experimental observation of this scaling using microwave transport experiments in quasi-two-dimensional resonators with randomly distributed weak scatterers. A schematic model for baryon excitations is presented in terms of a symmetric Dirac gyroscope, a relativistic model solvable in closed form, that reduces to a rotor in the non-relativistic limit. The model is then mapped on a nearest neighbour tight binding model. In its simplest one-dimensional form this model yields a finite equidistant spectrum. This is experimentally implemented as a chain of dielectric resonators under conditions where their coupling is evanescent and good agreement with the prediction is achieved., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures

We present the first experimental microwave realization of the one-dimensional Dirac oscillator, a paradigm in exactly solvable relativistic systems. The experiment relies on a relation of the Dirac oscillator to a corresponding tight-binding system. This tight-binding system is implemented as a microwave system by a chain of coupled dielectric disks, where the coupling is evanescent and can be adjusted appropriately. The resonances of the finite microwave system yields the spectrum of the one-dimensional Dirac oscillator with and without mass term. The flexibility of the experimental set-up allows the implementation of other one-dimensional Dirac type equations., Comment: 6 figures, 5 pages

A realisation of a periodically driven microwave system is presented. The principal element of the scheme is a variable capacity, i.e. a varicap, introduced as an element of the resonant circuit. Sideband structures corresponding to different driving signals, have been measured experimentally. In the linear regime we observed sideband structures with specific shapes. The main peculiarities of these shapes can be explained within a semiclassical approximation. Symmetry reduced three-disk and five-disk systems are studied in a microwave setup. Using harmonic inversion the distribution of the imaginary parts of the resonances is determined. With increasing opening of the systems, a spectral gap is observed for thick as well as for thin repellers and for the latter case it is compared with the known topological pressure bounds. The maxima of the distributions are found to coincide for a large range of the distance to radius parameter with half of the classical escape rate. This confirms theoretical predictions based on rigorous mathematical analysis for the spectral gap and on numerical experiments for the maxima of the distributions., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We present microwave experiments on the symmetry reduced 5-disk billiard studying the transition from a closed to an open system. The measured microwave reflection signal is analyzed by means of the harmonic inversion and the counting function of the resulting resonances is studied. For the closed system this counting function shows the Weyl asymptotic with a leading exponent equal to 2. By opening the system successively this exponent decreases smoothly to an non-integer value. For the open systems the extraction of resonances by the harmonic inversion becomes more challenging and the arising difficulties are discussed. The results can be interpreted as a first experimental indication for the fractal Weyl conjecture for resonances., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Experiments on hexagonal graphene-like structures using microwave measuring techniques are presented. The lowest transverse-electric resonance of coupled dielectric disks sandwiched between two metallic plates establishes a tight-binding configuration. The nearest-neighbor coupling approximation is investigated in systems with few disks. Taking advantage of the high flexibility of the disks positions, consequences of the disorder introduced in the graphene lattice on the Dirac points are investigated. Using two different types of disks, a boron-nitride-like structure (a hexagonal lattice with a two-atom basis) is implemented, showing the appearance of a band gap., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures

The boundaries of waveguides and nanowires have drastic influence on their coherent scattering properties. Designing the boundary profile is thus a promising approach for transmission and band-gap engineering with many applications. By performing an experimental study of microwave transmission through rough waveguides we demonstrate that a recently proposed surface scattering theory can be employed to predict the measured transmission properties from the boundary profiles and vice versa. A new key ingredient of this theory is a scattering mechanism which depends on the squared gradient of the surface profiles. We demonstrate the non-trivial effects of this scattering mechanism by detailed mode-resolved microwave measurements and numerical simulations., Comment: 5 pages 4 figures

We analyse the single-mode transmission of microwaves in a guide with internal random structure. The waveguide contains scatterers characterised by random heights and positions, corresponding to compositional and structural disorder. We measure the effects of cross-correlations between two kinds of disorder, showing how they enhance or attenuate the experimentally found transmission gaps generated by long-range self-correlations. The results agree with the theoretical predictions obtained for the aperiodic Kronig-Penney model and prove that self- and cross-correlations have relevant effects also in finite disordered samples of small size., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

A microwave setup for mode-resolved transport measurement in quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) structures is presented. We will demonstrate a technique for direct measurement of the Green's function of the system. With its help we will investigate quasi-1D structures with various types of disorder. We will focus on stratified structures, i.e., structures that are homogeneous perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. In this case the interaction between different channels is absent, so wave propagation occurs individually in each open channel. We will apply analytical results developed in the theory of one-dimensional (1D) disordered models in order to explain main features of the quasi-1D transport. The main focus will be selective transport due to long-range correlations in the disorder. In our setup, we can intentionally introduce correlations by changing the positions of periodically spaced brass bars of finite thickness. Because of the equivalence of the stationary Schr\"odinger equation and the Helmholtz equation, the result can be directly applied to selective electron transport in nanowires, nanostripes, and superlattices., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

We consider an application of a general theory for cavities with point-like perturbations for a rectangular shape. Hereby we concentrate on experimental wave patterns obtained for nearly degenerate states. The nodal lines in these patterns may be broken, which is an effect coming only from the experimental determination of the patterns. The fidelity decay in a microwave billiard is considered, where the coupling to an attached antenna is varied. The resulting quantity, coupling fidelity, is experimentally studied for three different terminators of the varied antenna: a hard wall reflection, an open wall reflection, and a 50 Ohm load, corresponding to a totally open channel. The model description in terms of an effective Hamiltonian with a complex coupling constant is given. We present a microwave realization of finite tight-binding graphene-like structures. The structures are realized using discs with a high index of refraction. The discs are placed on a metallic surface while a second surface is adjusted atop the discs, such that the waves coupling the discs in the air are evanescent, leading to the tight-binding behavior. In reflection measurements the Dirac point and a linear increase close to the Dirac point is observed, if the measurement is performed inside the sample. Resonances due to edge states are found close to the Dirac point if the measurements are performed at the zigzag-edge or at the corner in case of a broken benzene ring., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures

Microwave transport experiments have been performed in a quasi-two-dimensional resonator with randomly distributed scatterers, each mimicking an $r^{-2}$ repulsive potential. Analysis of both stationary wave fields and transient transport shows large deviations from Rayleigh's law for the wave height distribution, which can only partially be described by existing multiple-scattering theories. At high frequencies, the flow shows branching structures similar to those observed previously in stationary imaging of electron flow. Semiclassical simulations confirm that caustics in the ray dynamics are likely to be responsible for the observed structures. Particular conspicuous features observed in the stationary patterns are "hot spots" with intensities far beyond those expected in a random wave field. Reinterpreting the flow patterns as ocean waves in the presence of spatially varying currents or depth variations in the sea floor, the branches and hot spots lead to enhanced frequency of freak or rogue wave formation in these regions., Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures

We study the effects of random positional disorder in the transmission of waves in a 1D Kronig-Penny model. For weak disorder we derive an analytical expression for the localization length and relate it to the transmission coefficient for finite samples. The obtained results describe very well the experimental frequency dependence of the transmission in a microwave realization of the model. We present microwave measurements for the density and spatial correlation of current critical points in an open billiard system, and compare them with the predictions of the Random Wave Model (RWM). In particular, due to a novel improvement of the experimental set-up, we determine experimentally the spatial correlation of saddle points of the current field. An asymptotic expression for the vortex-saddle and saddle-saddle correlation functions based on the RWM is derived, with experiment and theory agreeing well. We also derive an expression for the density of saddle points in the presence of a straight boundary with general mixed boundary conditions in the RWM, and compare with experimental measurements of the vortex and saddle density in the vicinity of a straight wall satisfying Dirichlet conditions., Comment: submitted to Physical Review E

The theoretical interpretation of measurements of "wavefunctions" and spectra in electromagnetic cavities excited by antennas is considered. Assuming that the characteristic wavelength of the field inside the cavity is much larger than the radius of the antenna, we describe antennas as "point-like perturbations". This approach strongly simplifies the problem reducing the whole information on the antenna to four effective constants. In the framework of this approach we overcame the divergency of series of the phenomenological scattering theory and justify assumptions lying at the heart of "wavefunction measurements". This selfconsistent approach allowed us to go beyond the one-pole approximation, in particular, to treat the experiments with degenerated states. The central idea of the approach is to introduce ``renormalized'' Green function, which contains the information on boundary reflections and has no singularity inside the cavity., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures

We study the fundamental question of dynamical tunneling in generic two-dimensional Hamiltonian systems by considering regular-to-chaotic tunneling rates. Experimentally, we use microwave spectra to investigate a mushroom billiard with adjustable foot height. Numerically, we obtain tunneling rates from high precision eigenvalues using the improved method of particular solutions. Analytically, a prediction is given by extending an approach using a fictitious integrable system to billiards. In contrast to previous approaches for billiards, we find agreement with experimental and numerical data without any free parameter., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

From a reflection measurement in a rectangular microwave billiard with randomly distributed scatterers the scattering and the ordinary fidelity was studied. The position of one of the scatterers is the perturbation parameter. Such perturbations can be considered as {\em local} since wave functions are influenced only locally, in contrast to, e. g., the situation where the fidelity decay is caused by the shift of one billiard wall. Using the random-plane-wave conjecture, an analytic expression for the fidelity decay due to the shift of one scatterer has been obtained, yielding an algebraic $1/t$ decay for long times. A perfect agreement between experiment and theory has been found, including a predicted scaling behavior concerning the dependence of the fidelity decay on the shift distance. From the measurement of a reflection spectrum of an open microwave cavity the poles of the scattering matrix in the complex plane have been determined. The resonances have been extracted by means of the harmonic inversion method. By this it became possible to resolve the resonances in a regime where the line widths exceed the mean level spacing up to a factor of 10, a value inaccessible in experiments up to now. The obtained experimental distributions of line widths were found to be in perfect agreement with predictions from random matrix theory when wall absorption and fluctuations caused by couplings to additional channels are considered., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures

We study the effects of single impurities on the transmission in microwave realizations of the photonic Kronig-Penney model, consisting of arrays of Teflon pieces alternating with air spacings in a microwave guide. As only the first propagating mode is considered, the system is essentially one dimensional obeying the Helmholtz equation. We derive analytical closed form expressions from which the band structure, frequency of defect modes, and band profiles can be determined. These agree very well with experimental data for all types of single defects considered (e.g. interstitial, substitutional) and shows that our experimental set-up serves to explore some of the phenomena occurring in more sophisticated experiments. Conversely, based on the understanding provided by our formulas, information about the unknown impurity can be determined by simply observing certain features in the experimental data for the transmission. This article reports on a joint theoretical and experimental study of the Pauli quantum-mechanical stress tensor $T_{\alpha \beta}(x,y)$ for open two-dimensional chaotic billiards. In the case of a finite current flow through the system the interior wave function is expressed as $\psi = u+iv$. With the assumption that $u$ and $v$ are Gaussian random fields we derive analytic expressions for the statistical distributions for the quantum stress tensor components $T_{\alpha \beta}$. The Gaussian random field model is tested for a Sinai billiard with two opposite leads by analyzing the scattering wave functions obtained numerically from the corresponding Schroedinger equation. Two-dimensional quantum billiards may be emulated from planar microwave analogues. Hence we report on microwave measurements for an open 2D cavity and how the quantum stress tensor analogue is extracted from the recorded electric field. The agreement with the theoretical predictions for the distributions for $T_{\alpha \beta}(x,y)$ is quite satisfactory for small net currents. However, a distinct difference between experiments and theory is observed at higher net flow, which could be explained using a Gaussian random field, where the net current was taken into account by an additional plane wave with a preferential direction and amplitude., Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures

We experimentally study the effect of enhancement of localization in weak one-dimensional random potentials. Our experimental setup is a single mode waveguide with 100 tuneable scatterers periodically inserted into the waveguide. By measuring the amplitudes of transmitted and reflected waves in the spacing between each pair of scatterers, we observe a strong decrease of the localization length when white-noise scatterers are replaced by a correlated arrangement of scatterers., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures

Nodal domains are studied both for real $\psi_R$ and imaginary part $\psi_I$ of the wavefunctions of an open microwave cavity and found to show the same behavior as wavefunctions in closed billiards. In addition we investigate the variation of the number of nodal domains and the signed area correlation by changing the global phase $\phi_g$ according to $\psi_R+i\psi_I=e^{i\phi_g}(\psi_R'+i\psi_I')$. We review recent research on the transport properties of classical waves through chaotic systems with special emphasis on microwaves and sound waves. Inasmuch as these experiments use antennas or transducers to couple waves into or out of the systems, scattering theory has to be applied for a quantitative interpretation of the measurements. Most experiments concentrate on tests of predictions from random matrix theory and the random plane wave approximation. In all studied examples a quantitative agreement between experiment and theory is achieved. To this end it is necessary, however, to take absorption and imperfect coupling into account, concepts that were ignored in most previous theoretical investigations. We consider waveguides formed by single or multiple two-dimensional chaotic cavities connected to leads. The cavities are chaotic in the sense that the ray (or equivalently, classical particle) dynamics within them is chaotic. Geometrical parameters are chosen to produce a mixed phase space (chaotic regions surrounding islands of stability where motion is regular). Incoming rays (or particles) cannot penetrate into these islands but incoming plane waves dynamically tunnel into them at a certain discrete set of frequencies (energies). The support of the corresponding quasi-bound states is along the trajectories of periodic orbits trapped within the cavity. We take advantage of this difference in the ray/wave behavior to demonstrate how chaotic waveguides can be used to design beam splitters and microlasers. It was recently conjectured that 1/f noise is a fundamental characteristic of spectral fluctuations in chaotic quantum systems. In this Letter we show that the level fluctuations of experimental realizations of the Sinai billiard exhibit {\em 1/f} noise, corroborating the conjecture. Assuming that the statistical properties of these systems are those of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE), we compare the experimental results with the universal behavior predicted in the random matrix framework, and find an excellent agreement. The deviations from this behavior observed at low frequencies can be easily explained with the semiclassical periodic orbit theory. In conclusion, it is shown that the main features of the conjecture are affected neither by non-universal properties due to the underlying classical dynamics nor by the uncertainties of the experimental setup., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Europhysics Letters

A tunable microwave scattering device is presented which allows the controlled variation of Fano line shape parameters in transmission through quantum billiards. We observe a non-monotonic evolution of resonance parameters that is explained in terms of interacting resonances. The dissipation of radiation in the cavity walls leads to decoherence and thus to a modification of the Fano profile. We show that the imaginary part of the complex Fano q-parameter allows to determine the absorption constant of the cavity. Our theoretical results demonstrate further that the two decohering mechanisms, dephasing and dissipation, are equivalent in terms of their effect on the evolution of Fano resonance lineshapes., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Physica E (conference proceedings)

Evidence for dynamical tunneling is observed in studies of the transmission, and wave functions, of a soft-walled microwave cavity resonator. We investigate the statistical properties of wavefunctions in an open chaotic cavity. When the number of channels in the openings of the billiard is increased by varying the frequency, wavefunctions cross over from real to complex. The distribution of the phase rigidity, which characterizes the degree to which a wavefunction is complex, and long-range correlations of intensity and current density are studied as a function of the number of channels in the openings. We quantify the presence of direct processes in the S-matrix of chaotic microwave cavities with absorption in the one-channel case. To this end the full distribution P_S(S) of the S-matrix, i.e. S=\sqrt{R}e^{i\theta}, is studied in cavities with time-reversal symmetry for different antenna coupling strengths T_a or direct processes. The experimental results are compared with random-matrix calculations and with numerical simulations based on the Heidelberg approach including absorption. The theoretical result is a generalization of the Poisson kernel. The distributions of the reflection coefficients $P(R)$ for chaotic microwave cavities with time-reversal symmetry are investigated in different absorption and antenna coupling regimes. We use a microwave cavity to investigate the influence of a movable absorbing center on the wave function of an open quantum dot. Our study shows that the absorber acts as a position-selective probe, which may be used to suppress those wave function states that exhibit an enhancement of their probability density near the region where the impurity is located. For an experimental probe of this wave function selection, we develop a technique that we refer to as scanning Fourier spectroscopy, which allows us to identify, and map out, the structure of the classical trajectories that are important for transmission through the cavity., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

The tight-binding model with correlated disorder introduced by Izrailev and Krokhin [PRL 82, 4062 (1999)] has been extended to the Kronig-Penney model. The results of the calculations have been compared with microwave transmission spectra through a single-mode waveguide with inserted correlated scatterers. The spectra of Sinai microwave billiards and rectangular billiards with statistically distributed circular scatterers have been taken as a function of the position of one wall, and of one of the scatterers, respectively. Whereas in the first case the velocity distribution and correlations obey the universal behaviour predicted by Simons and Altshuler, in the second case a completely different behaviour is observed.
