The quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in the X-ray variability of both black hole (BH) and neutron star (NS) systems provide a tool for probing strong gravity and dense matter equations of state. Nevertheless, the mechanism of QPO modulation in NS systems, where the amplitudes of QPOs with frequencies approaching kHz range are very high in comparison to BH high-frequency QPOs, remains an unsolved puzzle. Relativistic ray tracing of photons emitted from the immediate vicinity of compact objects has, to date, been used to investigate various mechanisms that explain the observed weak BH QPOs. However, it has not been applied to model the NS QPO signal, which requires incorporating the NS surface and a bright boundary layer (BL) on it. Here, we explore the QPO modulation mechanisms based on the BL obscuration. Using simplified models of axisymmetric oscillations of thick accretion discs (tori), we demonstrate that the disc oscillations drive the high NS QPO amplitudes through BL obscuration, which is relevant especially for vertical oscillations. We present two-dimensional general relativistic radiative magnetohydrodynamical simulations of accretion disks around non-rotating stellar-mass black hole. We study the evolution of an equilibrium accreting torus in different grid resolutions to determine an adequate resolution to produce a stable turbulent disk driven by magneto-rotational instability. We evaluate the quality parameter, $Q_{\theta}$, from the ratio of MRI wavelength to the grid zone size and examine the effect of resolution in various quantitative values such as the accretion rate, magnetisation, fluxes of physical quantities and disk scale-height. We present a full general relativistic analytic solution for a radiation-pressure supported equilibrium fluid torus orbiting a rotating neutron star (NS). Previously developed analytical methods are thoroughly applied in the Hartle-Thorne geometry, including the effects of both the NS's angular momentum and quadrupole moment. The structure, size and shape of the torus are explored, focusing especially on the critically thick solution - the cusp tori. For the astrophysically relevant range of NS parameters, we examine how our findings differ from those obtained for the Schwarzschild spacetime. The solutions for rotating stars display signatures of the interplay between relativistic and Newtonian effects where the impact of NS angular momentum and quadrupole moment are almost counterbalanced at the given radius. Nevertheless, the spacetime parameters still strongly influence the size of tori, which can be shown in a coordinate-independent way. Finally, we discuss the importance of the size of the central NS, determining whether or not the surrounding torus may exist. The four characteristic oscillation frequencies of accretion flows are, in addition to the Keplerian orbital frequency, often discussed in the context of the time variability of the black hole and neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). These are namely the frequencies of the axisymmetric radial and vertical epicyclic oscillations, and the frequencies of non-axisymmetric oscillations corresponding to the periastron (radial) and Lense-Thirring (vertical) precessions. In this context, we investigate the effect of the quadrupole moment of a slowly rotating NS and provide complete formulae for calculating these oscillation and precession frequencies, as well as their convenient approximations. Simple formulae corresponding to the geodesic limit of a slender torus (and test particle motion) and the limit of a marginally overflowing torus (torus exhibiting a critical cusp) are presented, and furthermore, more general approximate formulae are included to allow calculations for arbitrarily thick tori. We provide the Wolfram Mathematica code used for our calculations together with C++ and PYTHON codes for calculations of the frequencies. Our formulae can be used for various calculations describing the astrophysical signatures of the NSs' superdense matter equation of state. For instance, we demonstrate that, even for a given fixed number of free parameters, a model accounting for fluid flow precession better matches the frequencies of twin-peak quasiperiodic oscillations observed in NS LMXBs than a model using geodesic precession., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. This dissertation is written as an annotated collection of selected articles. The dissertation focuses on the modelling of accretion disks in X-ray binaries with a black hole or neutron star. The main objective is to use advanced numerical methods to reveal the fundamental processes that influence the observed spectral and temporal features. Among the significant results of this modelling is the recognition of the puffy accretion disk, a novel type of accretion disk based purely on the results of numerical simulations. Furthermore, the work focuses on modelling the X-ray variability and quasi-periodic oscillations using analytical models of accretion disks, but an advanced description of the oscillations, and a discussion of the implications of this modelling for observational data., Comment: PhD thesis defended on September 21st 2023, at the Institute of Physics of the Silesian University in Opava, Czech Republic, including minor corrections according to the referees' reports

We examine the influence of quadrupole moment of a slowly rotating neutron star (NS) on the oscillations of a fluid accretion disk (torus) orbiting a compact object the spacetime around which is described by the Hartle-Thorne geometry. Explicit formulae for non-geodesic orbital epicyclic and precession frequencies, as well as their simplified practical versions that allow for an expeditious application of the universal relations determining the NS properties, are obtained and examined. We demonstrate that the difference in the accretion disk precession frequencies for NSs of the same mass and angular momentum, but different oblateness, can reach up to tens of percent. Even higher differences can arise when NSs with the same mass and rotational frequency, but different equations of state (EoS), are considered. In particular, the Lense-Thirring precession frequency defined in the innermost parts of the accretion region can differ by more than one order of magnitude across NSs with different EoS. Puffy disc is a numerical model, expected to capture the properties of the accretion flow in X-ray black hole binaries in the luminous, mildly sub-Eddington state. We fit the kerrbb and kynbb spectral models in XSPEC to synthetic spectra of puffy accretion discs, obtained in general relativistic radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations, to see if they correctly recover the black hole spin and mass accretion rate assumed in the numerical simulation. We conclude that neither of the two models is capable of correctly interpreting the puffy disc parameters, which highlights a necessity to develop new, more accurate, spectral models for the luminous regime of accretion in X-ray black hole binaries. We examine the influence of the quadrupole moment of a slowly rotating neutron star on the oscillations of non-slender accretion tori. We apply previously developed methods to perform analytical calculations of frequencies of the radial epicyclic mode of a torus in the specific case of the Hartle-Thorne geometry. We present here our preliminary results and provide a brief comparison between the calculated frequencies and the frequencies previously obtained assuming both standard and linearized Kerr geometry. Finally, we shortly discuss the consequences for models of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations observed in low-mass X-ray binaries., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

Following the previous research on epicyclic oscillations of accretion disks around black holes (BHs) and neutron stars (NSs), a new model of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) has been proposed (CT model), which deals with oscillations of fluid in marginally overflowing accretion tori (i.e., tori terminated by cusps). According to preliminary investigations, the model provides better fits of the NS QPO data compared to the relativistic precession (RP) model. It also implies a significantly higher upper limit on the Galactic microquasars BH spin. A short analytic formula has been noticed to well reproduce the model's predictions on the QPO frequencies in Schwarzschild spacetimes. Here we derive an extended version of this formula that applies to rotating compact objects. We start with the consideration of Kerr spacetimes and derive a formula that is not restricted to a particular specific angular momentum distribution of the inner accretion flow, such as Keplerian or constant. Finally, we consider Hartle-Thorne spacetimes and include corrections implied by the NS oblateness. For a particular choice of a single parameter, our relation provides frequencies predicted by the CT model. For another value, it provides frequencies predicted by the RP model. We conclude that the formula is well applicable for rotating oblateness NSs and both models. We briefly illustrate application of our simple formula on several NS sources and confirm the expectation that the CT model is compatible with realistic values of the NS mass and provides better fits of data than the RP model., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Numerical general relativistic radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations of accretion disks around a stellar mass black hole with a luminosity above 0.5 of the Eddington value reveal their stratified, elevated vertical structure. We refer to these thermally stable numerical solutions as puffy disks. Above a dense and geometrically thin core of dimensionless thickness $h/r \sim 0.1$, crudely resembling a classic thin accretion disk, a puffed-up, geometrically thick layer of lower density and $h/r \sim 1.0$ is formed. We discuss the observational properties of puffy disks, in particular the geometrical obscuration of the inner disk by the elevated puffy region at higher observing inclinations, and collimation of the radiation along the accretion disk spin axis, which may explain the apparent super-Eddington luminosity of some X-ray objects. We also present synthetic spectra of puffy disks, and show that they are qualitatively similar to those of a Comptonized thin disk. We demonstrate that the existing xspec spectral fitting models provide good fits to synthetic observations of puffy disks, but cannot correctly recover the input black hole spin. The puffy region remains optically thick to scattering; in its spectral properties the puffy disk roughly resembles that of a warm corona sandwiching the disk core. We suggest that puffy disks may correspond to X-ray binary systems of luminosities above 0.3 of the Eddington luminosity in the intermediate spectral states.

We explore the influence of non-geodesic pressure forces that are present in an accretion disk on the frequencies of its axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric epicyclic oscillation modes. {We discuss its implications for models of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) that have been observed in the X-ray flux of accreting black holes (BHs) in the three Galactic microquasars, GRS 1915+105, GRO J1655$-$40 and XTE J1550$-$564. We focus on previously considered QPO models that deal with low azimuthal number epicyclic modes, $\lvert m \rvert \leq 2$, and outline the consequences for the estimations of BH spin, $a\in[0,1]$.} For four out of six examined models, we find only small, rather insignificant changes compared to the geodesic case. For the other two models, on the other hand, there is a fair increase of the estimated upper limit on the spin. Regarding the QPO model's falsifiability, we find that one particular model from the examined set is incompatible with the data. If the microquasar's spectral spin estimates that point to $a>0.65$ were fully confirmed, two more QPO models would be ruled out. Moreover, if two very different values of the spin, such as $a\approx 0.65$ in GRO J1655$-$40 vs. $a\approx 1$ in GRS 1915+105, were confirmed, all the models except one would remain unsupported by our results. Finally, we discuss the implications for a model recently proposed in the context of neutron star (NS) QPOs as a disk-oscillation-based modification of the relativistic precession model. This model provides overall better fits of the NS data and predicts more realistic values of the NS mass compared to the relativistic precession model. We investigate the three-dimensional, general relativistic Poynting-Robertson effect in the case of rigidly rotating spherical source which emits radiation radially in the local comoving frame. Such radiation field is meant to approximate the field produced by the surface of a rotating neutron star, or by the central radiating hot corona of accreting black holes; it extends the purely radial radiation field that we considered in a previous study. Its angular momentum is expressed in terms of the rotation frequency and radius of the emitting source. For the background we adopt a Kerr spacetime geometry. We derive the equations of motion for test particles influenced by such radiation field, recovering the classical and weak-field approximation for slow rotation. We concentrate on solutions consisting of particles orbiting along circular orbits off and parallel to the equatorial plane, which are stabilized by the balance between gravitational attraction, radiation force and PR drag. Such solutions are found to lie on a critical hypersurface, whose shape may morph from prolate to oblate depending on the Kerr spin parameter and the luminosity, rotation and radius of the radiating sphere. For selected parameter ranges, the critical hypersurface intersects the radiating sphere giving rise to a bulging equatorial region or, alternatively, two lobes above the poles. We calculate the trajectories of test particles in the close vicinity of the critical hypersurface for a selected set of initial parameters and analyze the spatial and angular velocity of test particles captured on the critical hypersurface., Comment: 20 pages, 13 Figures

We report on a new class of solutions of black hole accretion disks that we have found through three-dimensional, global, radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations in general relativity. It combines features of the canonical thin, slim and thick disk models but differs in crucial respects from each of them. We expect these new solutions to provide a more realistic description of black hole disks than the slim disk model. We are presenting a disk solution for a non-spinning black hole at a sub-Eddington mass accretion rate, $\dot M=0.6\,\dot M_{\rm Edd}$. By the density scale-height measure the disk appears to be thin, having a high density core near the equatorial plane of height $h_{\rho} \sim 0.1 \,r$, but most of the inflow occurs through a highly advective, turbulent, optically thick, Keplerian region that sandwiches the core and has a substantial geometrical thickness comparable to the radius, $H \sim r$. The accreting fluid is supported above the midplane in large part by the magnetic field, with the gas and radiation to magnetic pressure ratio $\beta \sim 1$, this makes the disk thermally stable, even though the radiation pressure strongly dominates over gas pressure. A significant part of the radiation emerging from the disk is captured by the black hole, so the disk is less luminous than a thin disk would be at the same accretion rate., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, submitted to APJ Letters

In this paper we investigate the three-dimensional (3D) motion of a test particle in a stationary, axially symmetric spacetime around a central compact object, under the influence of a radiation field. To this aim we extend the two-dimensional (2D) version of the Poynting-Robertson effect in General Relativity (GR) that was developed in previous studies. The radiation flux is modeled by photons which travel along null geodesics in the 3D space of a Kerr background and are purely radial with respect to the zero angular momentum observer (ZAMO) frames. The 3D general relativistic equations of motion that we derive are consistent with the classical (i.e. non-GR) description of the Poynting-Robertson effect in 3D. The resulting dynamical system admits a critical hypersurface, on which radiation force balances gravity. Selected test particle orbits are calculated and displayed, and their properties described. It is found that test particles approaching the critical hypersurface at a finite latitude and with non-zero angular moment are subject to a latitudinal drift and asymptotically reach a circular orbit on the equator of the critical hypersurface, where they remain at rest with respect to the ZAMO. On the contrary, test particles that have lost all their angular momentum by the time they reach the critical hypersurface do not experience this latitudinal drift and stay at rest with respects to the ZAMO at fixed non-zero latitude., Comment: 17 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication on Physical Review D the 3rd of January 2019
