Spatial light modulators (SLMs) are widely used to coherently control quantum states of light. When carrying out these experiments, some assumptions are made. For instance, it is supposed that the position-momentum correlations between twin photon pairs are not affected by the use of a liquid crystal display (LCD) as a SLM. Furthermore, it is assumed that the characterization of such devices performed with an intense laser source, is still valid in the single photon regime. In this work, we show that such assumptions are acceptable, within the experimental uncertainties, for a liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) display. This is especially important when considering the use of this kind of displays for the coherent control of quantum states based on twin photon sources.

Spatial light modulators are widely used to perform modulations of different properties of the electromagnetic field. In this work, a simple optimization method for general double-pass setups was developed. It takes into account the involved polarizing elements and displays, and a numerical simulation based on an exhaustive search routine finds the optimal optical axes orientation of the polarizing elements for the desired modulation. By simultaneously considering both impingements, we are able to take full advantage of the modulation capabilities of the chosen spatial light modulators. In particular, different polarization modulations and complex amplitude modulations were studied for twisted nematic liquid crystal displays and passive linear optical elements. Examples for different optimization criteria are shown and compared with experimental results, supporting the feasibility of this approach. Thin films of azopolymer-nanoparticles hybrid materials were fabricated with poly[1-[4-(3-carboxy-4-hydroxyphenylazo) benzenesulfonamido]-1,2-ethanediyl] (PAZO) and different concentrations of Ag and AgAu nanoparticles (NPs). By illuminating the films with polarized interference patterns, surface relief gratings (SRGs) were recorded. It was found that for some concentrations of NPs their modulations and diffraction efficiency were higher than the obtained for PAZO films without NPs. The effect was mainly explained by the increase of the free volume available for the photoisomerization for certain concentrations of NPs. The dependence of the diffraction efficiency on concentration was directly related to changes in modulation depth. We show that an azopolymer can be used to create a supramolecular architecture in a parallel process with patterned surface properties. By illuminating with an interference pattern, we created adhesion and charge patterns that reflect the molecular ordering. We studied the recording process in two limit situations. When birefringence dominates over mass transport, an adhesion pattern was recorded even in absence of a surface relief grating (SRG). When mass transport dominates, we measured a higher frequency adhesion and relief patterns on top of the SRG. We present a tomographic method which requires only $4d-3$ measurement outcomes to reconstruct \emph{any} pure quantum state of arbitrary dimension $d$. Using the proposed scheme we have experimentally reconstructed a large number of pure states of dimension $d=7$, obtaining a mean fidelity of $0.94$. Moreover, we performed numerical simulations of the reconstruction process, verifying the feasibility of the method for higher dimensions. In addition, the \emph{a priori} assumption of purity can be certified within the same set of measurements, what represents an improvement with respect to other similar methods and contributes to answer the question of how many observables are needed to uniquely determine any pure state.

We present an experimental optical implementation of a parallel-in-time discrete model of quantum evolution, based on the entanglement between the quantum system and a finite dimensional quantum clock. The setup is based on a programmable spatial light modulator which entangles the polarization and transverse spatial degrees of freedom of a single photon. It enables the simulation of a qubit history state containing the whole evolution of the system, capturing its main features in a simple and configurable scheme. We experimentally determine the associated system-time entanglement, which is a measure of distinguishable quantum evolution, and also the time average of observables, which in the present realization can be obtained through one single measurement.

We present a proof-of-principle demonstration of a method to characterize \textit{any} pure spatial qudit of arbitrary dimension $d$, which is based on the classic phase shift interferometry technique. In the proposed scheme a total of only $4 d$ measurement outcomes are needed, implying a significant reduction with respect to the standard schemes for quantum state tomography which require of the order of $d^2$. By using this technique, we have experimentally reconstructed a large number of states ranging from $d=2$ up to $14$ with mean fidelity values higher than $0.97$. For that purpose the qudits were codified in the discretized transverse momentum-position of single photons, once they are sent through an aperture with $d$ slits. We provide an experimental implementation of the method based in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, which allows to reduce the number of measurement settings to 4 since the $d$ slits can be measured simultaneously. Furthermore, it can be adapted to consider the reconstruction of the unknown state from the outcome frequencies of $4d-3$ fixed projectors independently of the encoding or the nature of the quantum system, allowing to implement the reconstruction method in a general experiment.
