Inspired by the problem of biofilm growth, we numerically investigate clustering in a two-dimensional suspension of active (Janus) particles of finite size confined in a circular cavity. Their dynamics is regulated by a non-reciprocal mechanism that causes them to switch from active to passive above a certain threshold of the perceived near-neighbor density (quorum sensing).A variety of cluster phases -- glassy, solid (hexatic) and liquid -- is observed depending on the particle dynamics at the boundary, the quorum sensing range, and the level of noise

We propose a generalization of the stochastic resetting mechanism for a Brownian particle diffusing in a one-dimensional periodic potential: randomly in time, the particle gets reset at the bottom of the potential well it was in. Numerical simulations show that in mirror asymmetric potentials, stochastic resetting rectifies the particle's dynamics, with maximum drift speed for an optimal average resetting time. Accordingly, an unbiased Brownian tracer diffusing on an asymmetric substrate can rectify its motion by adopting an adaptive stop-and-go strategy. Brownian particles suspended in disordered crowded environments often exhibit non-Gaussian normal diffusion (NGND), whereby their displacements grow with mean square proportional to the observation time and non-Gaussian statistics. Their distributions appear to decay almost exponentially according to "universal" laws largely insensitive to the observation time. This effect is generically attributed to slow environmental fluctuations, which perturb the local configuration of the suspension medium. To investigate the microscopic mechanisms responsible for the NGND phenomenon, we study Brownian diffusion in low dimensional systems, like the free diffusion of ellipsoidal and active particles, the diffusion of colloidal particles in fluctuating corrugated channels and Brownian motion in arrays of planar convective rolls. NGND appears to be a transient effect related to the time modulation of the instantaneous particle's diffusivity, which can occur even under equilibrium conditions. Consequently, we propose to generalize the definition of NGND to include transient displacement distributions which vary continuously with the observation time. To this purpose, we provide a heuristic one-parameter function, which fits all time-dependent transient displacement distributions corresponding to the same diffusion constant. Moreover, we reveal the existence of low dimensional systems where the NGND distributions are not leptokurtic (fat exponential tails), as often reported in the literature, but platykurtic (thin sub-Gaussian tails), i.e., with negative excess kurtosis. It is often desirable to enhance the motility of active nano- or microscale swimmers such as, e.g., self-propelled Janus particles as agents of chemical reactions or weak sperm cells for better chances of successful fertilization. Here we tackle this problem based on the idea that motility can be transferred from a more active guest species to a less active host species. We performed numerical simulations of motility transfer in two typical cases, namely for interacting particles with weak inertia effect, by analyzing their velocity distributions, and for interacting overdamped particles, by studying their effusion rate. In both cases we detected motility transfer with a motility enhancement of the host species of up to a factor of four. The diffusion of an artificial active particle in a two-dimensional periodic pattern of stationary convection cells is investigated by means of extensive numerical simulations. In the limit of large P\'eclet numbers, i.e., for self-propulsion speeds below a certain depinning threshold and weak roto-translational fluctuations, the particle undergoes asymptotic normal diffusion with diffusion constant proportional to the square root of its diffusion constant at zero flow. Chirality effects in the propulsion mechanism, modeled here by a tunable applied torque, favors particle's jumping between adjacent convection rolls. Roll jumping is signaled by an excess diffusion peak, which appears to separate two distinct active diffusion regimes for low and high chirality. A qualitative interpretation of our simulation results is proposed as a first step toward a fully analytical study of this phenomenon., Comment: To be publish in Physical Review Research

A Brownian particle floating in a narrow corrugated (sinusoidal) channel with fluctuating cross section exhibits non-Gaussian normal diffusion. Its displacements are distributed according to a Gaussian law for very short and asymptotically large observation times, whereas a robust exponential distribution emerges for intermediate observation times of the order of the channel fluctuation correlation time. For intermediate to large observation times the particle undergoes normal diffusion with one and the same effective diffusion constant. These results are analytically interpreted without having recourse to heuristic assumptions. Such a simple model thus reproduces recent experimental and numerical observations obtained by investigating complex biophysical systems.

In many natural and artificial devices diffusive transport takes place in confined geometries with corrugated boundaries. Such boundaries cause both entropic and hydrodynamic effects, which have been studied only for the case of spherical particles. Here we experimentally investigate diffusion of particles of elongated shape confined into a corrugated quasi-two-dimensional channel. Elongated shape causes complex excluded-volume interactions between particle and channel walls which reduce the accessible configuration space and lead to novel entropic free energy effects. The extra rotational degree of freedom also gives rise to a complex diffusivity matrix that depends on both the particle location and its orientation. We further show how to extend the standard Fick-Jacobs theory to incorporate combined hydrodynamic and entropic effects, so as, for instance, to accurately predict experimentally measured mean first passage times along the channel. The mechanism of thermal conductivity in amorphous polymers, especially polymer fibers, is unclear in comparison with that in inorganic materials. Here, we report the observation of across over of heat conduction behavior from three dimensions (3D) to quasi-one dimension (1D) in Polyimide(PI) nanofibers at a given temperature. A theoretical model based on the random walk theory has been proposed to quantitatively describe the interplay between the inter-chain hopping and the intra-chain hopping in nanofibers. In the absence of advection, confined diffusion characterizes transport in many natural and artificial devices, such as ionic channels, zeolites, and nanopores. While extensive theoretical and numerical studies on this subject have produced many important predictions, experimental verifications of the predictions are rare. Here, we experimentally measure colloidal diffusion times in microchannels with periodically varying width and contrast results with predictions from the Fick-Jacobs theory and Brownian dynamics simulation. While the theory and simulation correctly predict the entropic effect of the varying channel width, they fail to account for hydrodynamic effects, which include both an overall decrease and a spatial variation of diffusivity in channels. Neglecting such hydrodynamic effects, the theory and simulation underestimate the mean and standard deviation of first passage times by 40\% in channels with a neck width twice the particle diameter. We further show that the validity of the Fick-Jakobs theory can be restored by reformulating it in terms of the experimentally measured diffusivity. Our work thus demonstrates that hydrodynamic effects play a key role in diffusive transport through narrow channels and should be included in theoretical and numerical models., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Thermal conductance of a homogeneous 1D nonlinear lattice system with neareast neighbor interactions has recently been computationally studied in detail by Li et al [Eur. Phys. J. B {\bf 88}, 182 (2015)], where its power-law dependence on temperature $T$ for high temperatures is shown. Here, we address its entire temperature dependence, in addition to its dependence on the size $N$ of the system. We obtain a neat data collapse for arbitrary temperatures and system sizes, and numerically show that the thermal conductance curve is quite satisfactorily described by a fat-tailed $q$-Gaussian dependence on $TN^{1/3}$ with $q \simeq 1.55$. Consequently, its $T \to\infty$ asymptotic behavior is given by $T^{-\alpha}$ with $\alpha=2/(q-1) \simeq 3.64$., Comment: 5 pages including 2 figures

We investigate both analytically and by numerical simulation the relaxation of an overdamped Brownian particle in a 1D multiwell potential. We show that the mean relaxation time from an injection point inside the well down to its bottom is dominated by statistically rare trajectories that sample the potential profile outside the well. As a consequence, also the hopping time between two degenerate wells can depend on the detailed multiwell structure of the entire potential. The nonlocal nature of the transitions between two states of a disordered landscape is important for the correct interpretation of the relaxation rates in complex chemical-physical systems, measured either through numerical simulations or experimental techniques., Comment: Accepted by J. An active swimmer can tow a passive cargo by binding it to form a self-propelling dimer. The orientation of the cargo relative to the axis of the active dimer's head is determined by the hydrodynamic interactions associated with the propulsion mechanism of the latter. We show how the tower-cargo angular configuration greatly influences the dimer's diffusivity and, therefore, the efficiency of the active swimmer as a micro-towing motor.

We theoretically investigate the spin-dependent Seebeck effect in an Aharonov-Bohm mesoscopic ring in the presence of both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions under magnetic flux perpendicular to the ring. We apply the Green's function method to calculate the spin Seebeck coefficient employing the tight-binding Hamiltonian. It is found that the spin Seebeck coefficient is proportional to the slope of the energy-dependent transmission coefficients. We study the strong dependence of spin Seebeck coefficient on the Fermi energy, magnetic flux, strength of spin-orbit coupling, and temperature. Maximum spin Seebeck coefficients can be obtained when the strengths of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings are slightly different. A self-propelled artificial microswimmer is often modeled as a ballistic Brownian particle moving with constant speed aligned along one of its axis, but changing direction due to random collisions with the environment. Similarly to thermal noise, its angular randomization is described as a memoryless stochastic process. Here, we speculate that finite-time correlations in the orientational dynamics can affect the swimmer's diffusivity. To this purpose we propose and solve two alternative models. In the first one we simply assume that the environmental fluctuations governing the swimmer's propulsion are exponentially correlated in time, whereas in the second one we account for possible damped fluctuations of the propulsion velocity around the swimmer's axis. The corresponding swimmer's diffusion constants are predicted to get, respectively, enhanced or suppressed upon increasing the model memory time. We numerically investigate the motion of active artificial microswimmers diffusing in a fuel concentration gradient. We observe that, in the steady state, their probability density accumulates in the low-concentration regions, whereas a tagged swimmer drifts with velocity depending in modulus and orientation on how the concentration gradient affects the self-propulsion mechanism. Under most experimentally accessible conditions, the particle drifts toward the high-concentration regions (pseudo-chemotactic drift). In contrary to other 1D momentum-conserving lattices such as the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam $\beta$ (FPU-$\beta$) lattice, the 1D coupled rotator lattice is a notable exception which conserves total momentum while exhibits normal heat conduction behavior. The temperature behavior of the thermal conductivities of 1D coupled rotator lattice had been studied in previous works trying to reveal the underlying physical mechanism for normal heat conduction. However, two different temperature behaviors of thermal conductivities have been claimed for the same coupled rotator lattice. These different temperature behaviors also intrigue the debate whether there is a phase transition of thermal conductivities as the function of temperature. In this work, we will revisit the temperature dependent thermal conductivities for the 1D coupled rotator lattice. We find that the temperature dependence follows a power law behavior which is different with the previously found temperature behaviors. Our results also support the claim that there is no phase transition for 1D coupled rotator lattice. We also give some discussion about the similarity of diffusion behaviors between the 1D coupled rotator lattice and the single kicked rotator also called the Chirikov standard map., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the transport diffusivity of artificial microswimmers, a.k.a. Janus particles, moving in a sinusoidal channel in the absence of external biases. Their diffusion constant turns out to be quite sensitive to the self-propulsion mechanism and the geometry of the channel compartments. We review recent advances in rectification control of artificial microswimmers, also known as Janus particles, diffusing along narrow, periodically corrugated channels. The swimmer self-propulsion mechanism is modeled so as to incorporate a nonzero torque (propulsion chirality). We first summarize the effects of chirality on the autonomous current of microswimmers freely diffusing in channels of different geometries. In particular, left-right and upside-down asymmetric channels are shown to exhibit different transport properties. We then report new results on the dependence of the diffusivity of chiral microswimmers on the channel geometry and their own self-propulsion mechanism. Transport and diffusion of heat in one dimensional (1D) nonlinear systems which {\it conserve momentum} is typically thought to proceed anomalously. Notable exceptions, however, exist of which the rotator model is a prominent case. Therefore, the quest arises to identify the origin of manifest anomalous transport in those low dimensional systems. Here, we develop the theory for both, momentum/heat diffusion and its corresponding momentum/heat transport. We demonstrate that the second temporal derivative of the mean squared deviation of the momentum spread is proportional to the equilibrium correlation of the total momentum flux. This result in turn relates, via the integrated momentum flux correlation, to an effective viscosity, or equivalently, to the underlying momentum diffusivity. We put forward the intriguing hypothesis that a fluid-like momentum dynamics with a {\it finite viscosity} causes {\it normal} heat transport; its corollary being that superdiffusive momentum diffusion with an intrinsic {\it diverging viscosity} in turn yields {\it anomalous} heat transport. This very hypothesis is corroborated over wide extended time scales by use of precise molecular dynamics simulations. The numerical validation of the hypothesis involves three distinct archetype classes of nonlinear pair-interaction potentials: (i) a globally bounded pair interaction (the noted rotator model), (ii) unbounded interactions acting at large distances (the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam $\beta$ model, or the rotator model amended with harmonic pair interactions) and (iii), a pair interaction potential being unbounded at short distances while displaying an asymptotic free part (Lennard-Jones model)., Comment: New J. Rectification of electron wave-packets propagating along a quasi-one dimensional chain is commonly achieved via the simultaneous action of nonlinearity and longitudinal asymmetry, both confined to a limited portion of the chain termed wave diode. However, it is conceivable that, in the presence of an external magnetic field, spatial asymmetry perpendicular to the direction of propagation suffices to ensure rectification. This is the case of a nonlinear ring-shaped lattice with different upper and lower halves (diode), which is attached to two elastic chains (leads). The resulting device is mirror symmetric with respect to the ring vertical axis, but mirror asymmetric with respect to the chain direction. Wave propagation along the two diode paths can be modeled for simplicity by a discrete Schr\"odinger equation with cubic nonlinearities. The effect of intrinsic channel noise is investigated for the dynamic response of a neuronal cell with a delayed feedback loop. The loop is based on the so-called autapse phenomenon in which dendrites establish not only connections to neighboring cells but as well to its own axon. The biophysical modeling is achieved in terms of a stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley model containing such a built in delayed feedback. The fluctuations stem from intrinsic channel noise, being caused by the stochastic nature of the gating dynamics of ion channels. The influence of the delayed stimulus is systematically analyzed with respect to the coupling parameter and the delay time in terms of the interspike interval histograms and the average interspike interval. The delayed feedback manifests itself in the occurrence of bursting and a rich multimodal interspike interval distribution, exhibiting a delay-induced reduction of the spontaneous spiking activity at characteristic frequencies. Noisy saltatory spike propagation along myelinated axons is studied within a stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley model. The intrinsic noise (whose strength is inverse proportional to the nodal membrane size) arising from fluctuations of the number of open ion channels influences the dynamics of the membrane potential in a node of Ranvier where the sodium ion channels are predominantly localized. The nodes of Ranvier are linearly coupled. As the measure for the signal propagation reliability we focus on the ratio between the number of initiated spikes and the transmitted spikes. This work supplements our earlier study [A. Ochab-Marcinek, G. Schmid, I. Goychuk and P. H\"anggi, Phys. Rev E 79, 011904 (2009)] towards stronger channel noise intensity and supra-threshold coupling. For strong supra-threshold coupling the transmission reliability decreases with increasing channel noise level until the causal relationship is completely lost and a breakdown of the spike propagation due to the intrinsic noise is observed., Comment: To appear in EPJST
