Massive stars end their life as core-collapse supernovae, amongst which some extremes are Type Ic broad-lined supernovae associated with long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) having powerful relativistic jets. Their less-extreme brethren make unsuccessful jets that are choked inside the stars, appearing as X-ray flashes or low-luminosity GRBs. On the other hand, there exists a population of extragalactic fast X-ray transients (EFXTs) with timescales ranging from seconds to thousands of seconds, whose origins remain obscure. Known sources that contribute to the observed EFXT population include the softer analogs of LGRBs, shock breakouts of supernovae, or unsuccessful jets. Here, we report the discovery of the bright X-ray transient EP240414a detected by the Einstein Probe (EP), which is associated with the Type Ic supernova SN 2024gsa at a redshift of 0.401. The X-ray emission evolution is characterised by a very soft energy spectrum peaking at < 1.3 keV, which makes it distinct from known LGRBs, X-ray flashes, or low-luminosity GRBs. Follow-up observations at optical and radio bands revealed the existence of a weak relativistic jet that interacts with an extended shell surrounding the progenitor star. Located on the outskirts of a massive galaxy, this event reveals a new population of explosions of Wolf-Rayet stars characterised by a less powerful engine that drives a successful but weak jet, possibly owing to a progenitor star with a smaller core angular momentum than in traditional LGRB progenitors., Comment: 43 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, submitted. We report the suppression of Type-I Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) in the EAST tokamak under ITER baseline conditions using $n = 4$ Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs), while maintaining energy confinement. Achieving RMP-ELM suppression requires a normalized plasma beta ($\beta_N$) exceeding 1.8 in a target plasma with $q_{95}\approx 3.1$ and tungsten divertors. Quasi-linear modeling shows high plasma beta enhances RMP-driven neoclassical toroidal viscosity torque, reducing field penetration thresholds. With the introduction of the Adaptive Intelligence Engine (AIE), the Versal Adaptive Compute Acceleration Platform (Versal ACAP) has garnered great attention. However, the current focus of Vitis Libraries and limited research has mainly been on how to invoke AIE modules, without delving into a thorough discussion on effectively utilizing AIE in its typical use cases. As a result, the widespread adoption of Versal ACAP has been restricted. The Communication Avoidance (CA) algorithm is considered a typical application within the AIE architecture. Nevertheless, the effective utilization of AIE in CA applications remains an area that requires further exploration. We propose a top-down customized design framework, EA4RCA(Efficient AIE accelerator design framework for regular Communication-Avoid Algorithm), specifically tailored for CA algorithms with regular communication patterns, and equipped with AIE Graph Code Generator software to accelerate the AIE design process. The primary objective of this framework is to maximize the performance of AIE while incorporating high-speed data streaming services. Experiments show that for the RCA algorithm Filter2D and Matrix Multiple (MM) with lower communication requirements and the RCA algorithm FFT with higher communication requirements, the accelerators implemented by the RA4RCA framework achieve the highest throughput improvements of 22.19x, 1.05x and 3.88x compared with the current highest performance acceleration scheme (SOTA), and the highest energy efficiency improvements of 6.11x, 1.30x and 7.00x.

All-optical spin switching (AOS) is a new phenomenon found in a small group of magnetic media, where a single laser pulse can switch spins from one direction to another, without assistance of a magnetic field, on a time scale much shorter than existing magnetic technology. However, despite intensive efforts over a decade, its underlying working principle remains elusive. Here through manganese-based Heusler ferrimagnets, we show that a group of flat bands around the Fermi level act as gateway states to form efficient channels or spin switching, where their noncentrosymmetry allows us to correlate the spin dynamics to the second-order optical response. To quantify their efficacy, we introduce the third-rank Pancharatnam-Berry tensor (PB tensor), $\boldsymbol{\eta}^{(3)}=\langle i |{\bf p} |m\rangle \langle m|{\bf p} |f\rangle \langle f|{\bf p} |i\rangle,$ where $|i\rangle$, $|m\rangle$ and $|f\rangle$ are initial, intermediate and final band states, respectively, and ${\bf p}$ is the momentum operator. A picture emerges: Those which show AOS, such as the recently discovered Mn$_2$RuGa, always have a large PB tensor element} but have a small sublattice spin moment ratio, consistent with the prior experimental small remanence criterion. This does not only reveal that the delicate balance between the large PB tensor element and the small sublattice spin ratio plays a decisive role in AOS, but also, conceptually, connects the $n$th-order nonlinear optics to $(n+1)$th-rank PB tensors in general., Comment: 20 pages, four figures. Bilayer antiferromagnets CrX$_{3}$ (X $=$ Cl, Br, and I) are promising materials for spintronics and optoelectronics that are rooted in their peculiar electronic structures. However, their bands are often hybridized from the interlayer antiferromagnetic ordering, which are difficult to disentangle by traditional methods. In this work, we theoretically show that nonlinear harmonic spectra can differentiate subtle differences in their electronic states. In contrast to prior nonlinear optical studies which often use one or two photon energies, we systematically study the wavelength-dependent nonlinear harmonic spectra realized by hundreds of individual dynamical simulations under changed photon energies. Through turning on and off some excitation channels, we can pinpoint every dipole-allowed transition that largely contributes to the second and third harmonics. With the help of momentum matrix elements, highly entangled resonance peaks at a higher energy above the band edge can be assigned to specific transitions between the valence bands and three separate regions of conduction bands. Our findings demonstrate a feasible means to detect very complex electronic structures in an important family of two-dimensional antiferromagnets.

A subspace of resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) configurations for edge localized mode (ELM) suppression is predicted for H-mode burning plasmas at 15 MA current and 5.3 T magnetic field in ITER. Perturbation of the core plasma can be reduced by a factor of 2 for equivalent edge stability proxies, while the perturbed plasma boundary geometry remains mostly resilient. The striation width of perturbed field lines connecting from the main plasma (normalized poloidal flux $< 1$) to the divertor targets is found to be significantly larger than the expected heat load width in the absence of RMPs. This facilitates heat load spreading with peak values at an acceptable level below 10 MW m${}^{-2}$ on the outer target already at moderate gas fueling and low Ne seeding for additional radiative dissipation of the 100 MW of power into the scrape-off layer (SOL). On the inner target, however, re-attachment is predicted away from the equilibrium strike point due to increased upstream heat flux, higher downstream temperature and less efficient impurity radiation., Comment: submitted in Nuclear Fusion

This report is in partial fulfillment of deliverable D1.1 Optimization of the SPI model and summarizes axisymmetric ITER SPI parameter scans performed by the NIMROD code for several ITER equilibria. These axisymmetric parameter scans are to assess the sensitivity of various injection parameters in preparation for 3D MHD SPI simulations. The second brightest GRB in history, GRB230307A provides an ideal laboratory to study the details of GRB prompt emission thanks to its extraordinarily high photon statistics and its single broad pulse overall shape characterized by an energy-dependent fast-rise-exponential-decay (FRED) profile. Here we demonstrate that its broad pulse is composed of many rapidly variable short pulses, rather than being the superposition of many short pulses on top of a slow component. Such a feature is consistent with the picture of many mini-jets due to local magnetic reconnection events in a large emission zone far from the GRB central engine, as envisaged in the internal-collision-induced magnetic reconnection and turbulence (ICMART) model, but raises a great challenge to the internal shock models that attribute all variability components to collisions among different shells. Since relativistic mini-jets demand strong magnetization in the outflow, this work provides strong evidence for a Poynting-flux-dominated jet composition of this bright GRB., Comment: 7 pages and 2 figures in the main text. 27 pages and 9 figures in total

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) has emerged as a promising tool for detecting electronic and magnetic structures in noncentrosymmetric materials, but 100$\%$ spin-polarized SHG has not been reported. In this work, we demonstrate nearly 100$\%$ spin-polarized SHG from half-metallic ferrimagnet Mn$_{2}$RuGa. A band gap in the spin-down channel suppresses SHG, so the spin-up channel contributes nearly all the signal, as large as 3614 pm/V about 10 times larger than that of GaAs. In the spin-up channel, $\chi_{xyz}^{(2)}$ is dominated by the large intraband current in three highly dispersed bands near the Fermi level. With the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the reduced magnetic point group allows additional SHG components, where the interband contribution is enhanced. Our finding is important as it predicts a large and complete spin-polarized SHG in a all-optical spin switching ferrimagnet. This opens the door for future applications.

Gravitational-wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) is a space-borne instrument dedicated to monitoring high-energy transients, including Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes (TGFs) and Terrestrial Electron Beams (TEBs). We implemented a TGF/TEB search algorithm for GECAM, with which 147 bright TGFs, 2 typical TEBs and 2 special TEB-like events are identified during an effective observation time of $\sim$9 months. We show that, with gamma-ray and charged particle detectors, GECAM can effectively identify and distinguish TGFs and TEBs, and measure their temporal and spectral properties in detail. A very high TGF-lightning association rate of $\sim$80\% is obtained between GECAM and GLD360 in east Asia region., Comment: The paper was accepted by Geophysical Research Letters on June 16th, 2023

The q95 window for Type-I Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) suppression using n=4 even parity Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs) has been significantly expanded to a range from 3.9 to 4.8, which is demonstrated to be reliable and repeatable in EAST over the last two years. This window is significantly wider than the previous one, which is around q95=3.7pm0.1, and is achieved using n=4 odd parity RMPs. Here, n represents the toroidal mode number of the applied RMPs and q95 is the safety factor at the 95% normalized poloidal magnetic flux. During ELM suppression, there is only a slight drop in the stored energy (<=10%). The comparison of pedestal density profiles suggests that ELM suppression is achieved when the pedestal gradient is kept lower than a threshold. This wide q95 window for ELM suppression is consistent with the prediction made by MARS-F modeling prior to the experiment, in which it is located at one of the resonant q95 windows for plasma response. The Chirikov parameter taking into account plasma response near the pedestal top, which measures the plasma edge stochasticity, significantly increases when q95 exceeds 4, mainly due to denser neighboring rational surfaces. Modeling of plasma response by the MARS-F code shows a strong coupling between resonant and non-resonant components across the pedestal region, which is characteristic of the kink-peeling like response observed during RMP-ELM suppression in previous studies on EAST. We report the experimental results of the commissioning phase in the 10 PW laser beamline of Shanghai Superintense Ultrafast Laser Facility (SULF). The peak power reaches 2.4 PW on target without the last amplifying during the experiment. The laser energy of 72\pm 9 J is directed to a focal spot of ~6 {\mu}m diameter (FWHM) in 30 fs pulse duration, yielding a focused peak intensity around 2.0 \times 10^{21} W/cm^2. First laser-proton acceleration experiment is performed using plain copper and plastic targets. High-energy proton beams with maximum cut-off energy up to 62.5 MeV are achieved using copper foils at the optimum target thickness of 4 {\mu}m via target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA). For plastic targets of tens of nanometers thick, the proton cut-off energy is approximately 20 MeV, showing ring-like or filamented density distributions. These experimental results reflect the capabilities of the SULF-10 PW beamline, e.g., both ultrahigh intensity and relatively good beam contrast. The confinement of Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) particles in the presence of n=3 Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs) in 15 MA ITER DT plasmas has been studied using full orbit ASCOT simulations. Realistic NBI distribution functions, and 3D wall and equilibria, including the plasma response to the externally applied 3D fields calculated with MARS-F, have been employed. The observed total fast-ion losses depend on the poloidal spectra of the applied n=3 RMP as well as on the absolute toroidal phase of the applied perturbation with respect to the NBI birth distribution. The absolute toroidal phase of the RMP perturbation does not affect the ELM control capabilities, which makes it a key parameter in the confinement optimization. The physics mechanisms underlying the observed fast-ion losses induced by the applied 3D fields have been studied in terms of the variation of the particle canonical angular momentum ($\delta P_{\phi}$) induced by the applied 3D fields. The presented simulations indicate that the transport is located in an Edge Resonant Transport Layer (ERTL) as observed previously in ASDEX Upgrade studies. Similarly, our results indicate that an overlapping of several linear and nonlinear resonances at the edge of the plasma might be responsible for the observed fast-ion losses. The results presented here may help to optimize the RMP configuration with respect to the NBI confinement in future ITER discharges.

The Gravitational Wave highly energetic Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) is dedicated to detecting gravitational wave gamma-ray bursts. It is capable of all-sky monitoring over and discovering gamma-ray bursts and new radiation phenomena. GECAM consists of two microsatellites, each equipped with 8 charged particle detectors (CPDs) and 25 gamma-ray detectors (GRDs). The CPD is used to measure charged particles in the space environment, monitor energy and flow intensity changes, and identify between gamma-ray bursts and space charged particle events in conjunction with GRD. CPD uses plastic scintillator as the sensitive material for detection, silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array as the optically readable device, and the inlaid Am-241 radioactive source as the onboard calibration means. One month after launching Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM), a bright thermonuclear X-ray burst from 4U~0614+09, was observed on January 24, 2021. We report the time-resolved spectroscopy of the burst and a burst oscillation detection at 413 Hz with a fractional amplitude 3.4\% (rms). This coincides with the burst oscillation previously discovered with \textit{Swift}/BAT \citep{Strohmayer2008}, and therefore confirms the spin frequency of this source. This burst is the brightest one in the normal bursts (except the superburst) ever detected from 4U~0614+09, which leads to an upper limit of distance estimation as 3.1 kpc. The folded light curve during the burst oscillation shows a multi-peak structure, which is the first case observed during a single burst oscillation in nonpulsating sources. The multi-peak profile could be due to additional harmonics of the burst oscillation, which is corresponding to several brighter/fainter spots at the stellar surface.

The Gravitational Wave Burst High-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM), consists of 2 small satellites that each contain 25 LaBr3 (lanthanum bromide doped with cerium chloride) detectors and 8 plastic scintillator detectors. The detector signals are read out using a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array. In this study, an acquisition algorithm for in-orbit real-time SiPM array data is designed and implemented, and the output event packet is defined. Finally, the algorithm's efficacy for event acquisition is verified.

As the main detector of the GECAM satellite, the calibration of the energy response and detection efficiency of the GRD detector is the main content of the ground-based calibration. The calibration goal requires the calibrated energy points to sample the full energy range (8 keV-2 MeV) as much as possible. The low energy band (8-160 keV) is calibrated with the X-ray beam, while the high energy band (>160 keV) with radioactive sources. This article mainly focuses on the calibration of the energy response and detection efficiency in the 8-160 keV with a refined measurement around the absorption edges of the lanthanum bromide crystal. The GRD performances for different crystal types, data acquisition modes, working modes, and incident positions are also analyzed in detail. Background: Each GECAM satellite payload contains 25 gamma-ray detectors (GRDs), which can detect gamma-rays and particles and can roughly localize the Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). GRD was designed using lanthanum bromide (LaBr3) crystal as the sensitive material with the rear end coupled with silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array for readout. Purpose: In aerospace engineering design of GRD, there are many key points to be studied. In this paper, we present the specific design scheme of GRD, the assembly and the performance test results of detectors. Methods: Based on Monte Carlo simulation and experimental test results, the specific schematic design and assembling process ofGRDwere optimized. After being fully assembled, theGRDswere conducted performance tests by using radioactive source and also conducted random vibration tests. Result and conclusion: The test results show that all satellite-borne GRDs have energy resolution <16% at 59.5 keV, meeting requirements of satellite in scientific performance. The GECAM mission consists of two identical microsatellites (GECAM-A and GECAM-B). Each satellite is equipped with 25 gamma-ray detectors (GRD) and 8 charged particle detectors (CPD). The main scientific objective of the GECAM mission is to detect gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) associated with the gravitational wave events produced by the merging of binary compact stars. After the launch on Dec. 10, 2020 , we carried out a series of on orbit tests. This paper introduces the test results of the GECAM-B satellite. According to the in-flight performance, the energy band for gamma-ray detection of GECAM-B is from about 7 keV to 3.5 MeV. GECAM-B can achieve prompt localization of GRBs. For the first time, GECAM-B realized a quasi-real-time transmission of trigger information using Beidou-3 RDSS. The discovery of gravitational waves and gamma-ray bursts heralds the era of multi-messenger astronomy. With the adoption of two small satellites to achieve the all-sky monitoring of gamma-ray bursts, the gravitational wave high-energy electromagnetic counterpart all-sky monitor (GECAM) possesses a quasi-real-time early warning ability and plays an important role in positioning the sources of gravitational waves and in subsequent observations.

The Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) satellite consists of two small satellites. Each GECAM payload contains 25 gamma ray detectors (GRD) and 8 charged particle detectors (CPD). GRD is the main detector which can detect gamma-rays and particles and localize the Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB),while CPD is used to help GRD to discriminate gamma-ray bursts and charged particle bursts. The GRD makes use of lanthanum bromide (LaBr3) crystal readout by SiPM. As the all available SiPM devices belong to commercial grade, quality assurance tests need to be performed in accordance with the aerospace specifications. In this paper, we present the results of quality assurance tests, especially a detailed mechanism analysis of failed devices during the development of GECAM. This paper also summarizes the application experience of commercial-grade SiPM devices in aerospace payloads, and provides suggestions for forthcoming SiPM space applications., Comment: 13 pages, 23 figures

This paper develops two non-inductive steady state scenarios for larger size configuration of China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) with integrated modeling simulations. A self-consistent core-pedestal coupled workflow for CFETR is developed under integrated modeling framework OMFIT, which allows more accurate evaluation of CFETR performance. The workflow integrates equilibrium code EFIT, transport codes ONETWO and TGYRO, and pedestal code EPED. A fully non-inductive baseline phase I scenario is developed with the workflow, which satisfies the minimum goal of Fusion Nuclear Science Facility. Compared with previous work, which proves the larger size and higher toroidal field CFETR configuration than has the advantages of reducing heating and current drive requirements, lowering divertor and wall power loads, allowing higher bootstrap current fraction and better confinement. A fully non-inductive high-performance phase II scenario is developed, which explores the alpha-particle dominated self-heating regime. Phase II scenario achieves the target of fusion power Pfus>1GW and fusion gain Qfus>20, and it largely reduces auxiliary heating and current drive power. Moreover, the large neutron production of phase II increases the energy generation power and tritium breeding rate.

Recent development of ultrashort laser pulses allows for optical control of structural and electronic properties of complex quantum materials. The layered transition metal dichalcogenide MoTe2, which can crystalize into several different structures with distinct topological and electronic properties, provides possibilities to control or switch between different phases. In this study we report a photo-induced sub-picosecond structural transition between the type-II Weyl semimetal phase and normal semimetal phase in bulk crystalline MoTe2 by using ultrafast pump-probe and time-resolved second harmonic generation spectroscopy. The phase transition is most clearly characterized by the dramatic change of the shear oscillation mode and the intensity loss of second harmonic generation. This work opens up new possibilities for ultrafast manipulation of the topological properties of solids, enabling potentially practical applications for topological switch device with ultrafast excitations., Comment: 8 pages,4 figures

The application of non-axisymmetric resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) to low current plasmas in the Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) was found to be correlated with substantial drops in neutron production, suggesting a significant degradation of fast ion confinement. The effects of such perturbations on fast ions in MAST have been modelled using a revised version of a non-steady-state orbit-following Monte-Carlo code (NSS OFMC), in which the parametrization of fusion reaction rates has been updated and neutron rates have been recalculated. Losses of fast ions via charge-exchange (CX) with background neutrals and the subsequent reionization of fast neutrals due to collisions with bulk plasma particles have also been taken into account. The effects of the plasma response to externally-applied RMPs have been included in the modelling. The updated results show that computed neutron rates in the presence of RMPs with the plasma response and CX reactions taken into account agree very well with the experimental data throughout the analysis target time. We use time-domain terahertz spectroscopy to measure the low energy conductivity and magnons in RuCl$_3$ under external magnetic field. At zero field, an oscillation with a frequency of 0.62 THz is clearly observed in time-domain spectrum below T$_N$, which is identified as a magnon excitation in the magnetic order state. The magnon excitation is not affected by the external magnetic field $\textbf{H}_{DC}$ when it is applied along the c-axis, but is clearly suppressed when $\textbf{H}_{DC}$ is applied within ab plane. More interestingly, when the magnetic component of THz wave $\textbf{h}(t)$ is perpendicular to the applied in-plane magnetic field, we observe another coherent oscillation at slightly higher energy scale at the field above 2 T, which is eventually suppressed for $H_{DC}>$5 T. The measurement seems to indicate that the in-plane magnetic field can lift the degeneracy of two branches of low energy magnons at $\Gamma$ point. The low energy optical conductivity calculated from the measured transmission spectrum is dominated by a broad continuum contribution, which is not affected by changing either temperature or external magnetic field. The continuum is likely to be related to the fractional spin excitation due to dominated Kitaev interaction in the material., Comment: 6 pages

We report the single-crystal growth and the fundamental magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a rare-earth triangular lattice antiferromagnet CeCd$_3$As$_3$. In this rare-earth antiferromagnet, the Ce local moments form a perfect triangular lattice. Due to the spin-orbital-entangled nature of the Ce local moments, the compound exhibits extremely anisotropic antiferromagnetic couplings along the c direction and in the ab plane respectively. We show that CeCd$_3$As$_3$ represents a {\it rare} experimental realization of an antiferromagnetic Ising model on a two dimensional triangular lattice and thus provides a prototype example for geometrical frustration. The plasma response from an external n = 2 magnetic perturbation field in ASDEX Upgrade has been measured using mainly electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostics and a rigid rotating field. To interpret ECE and ECE-imaging (ECE-I) measurements accurately, forward modeling of the radiation transport has been combined with ray tracing. The measured data is compared to synthetic ECE data generated from a 3D ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equilibrium calculated by VMEC. The measured amplitudes of the helical displacement around the low field side midplane are in reasonable agreement with the one from the synthetic VMEC diagnostics. Both exceed the prediction from the vacuum field calculations and indicate the presence of a kink response at the edge, which amplifies the perturbation. VMEC and MARS-F have been used to calculate the properties of this kink mode. The poloidal mode structure of the magnetic perturbation of this kink mode at the edge peaks at poloidal mode numbers larger than the resonant components |m| > |nq|, whereas the poloidal mode structure of its displacement is almost resonant |m| ~ |nq|. This is expected from ideal MHD in the proximity of rational surfaces. The displacement measured by ECE-I confirms this resonant response., Comment: 34 pages, 19 figures. The role of anisotropic thermal diffusivity on tearing mode stability is analysed in general toroidal geometry. A dispersion relation linking the growth rate to the tearing mode stability parameter, Delta, is derived. By using a resistive MHD code, modified to include such thermal transport, to calculate tearing mode growth rates, the dispersion relation is employed to determine Delta in situations with finite plasma pressure that are stabilised by favourable average curvature in a simple resistive MHD model. We also demonstrate that the same code can also be used to calculate the basis-functions [C J Ham, et al, Plasma Phys. Control. The application of resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs) produces splitting of the divertor strike point due to the interaction of the RMP field and the plasma field. The application of a rotating RMP field causes the strike point splitting to rotate, distributing the particle and heat flux evenly over the divertor. The RMP coils in MAST have been used to generate a rotating perturbation with a toroidal mode number n=3. The ELM frequency is doubled with the application of the RMP rotating field, whilst maintaining the H mode. During mitigation, the ELM peak heat flux is seen to be reduced by 50% for a halving in the ELM energy and motion of the strike point, consistent with the rotation of the applied RMP field, is seen using high spatial resolution (1.5mm at the target) heat flux profiles measured using infrared (IR) thermography., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

A new generation detector for the high energy cosmic ray - the DAMPE(DArk Matter Particle Explorer) is a satellite based project. Its main object is the measurement of energy spectrum of cosmic ray nuclei from 100GeV to 100TeV, the high energy electrons and gamma ray from 5GeV to 10TeV. A silicon matrix detector described in this paper, is employed for the sea level cosmic ray energy and position detection while the prototype testing of the DAMPE. This matrix is composed by the 180 silicon PIN detectors, which covers an area of 32*20 cm2. Calculations of tearing mode stability in tokamaks split conveniently into an external region, where marginally stable ideal MHD is applicable, and a resonant layer around the rational surface where sophisticated kinetic physics is needed. These two regions are coupled by the stability parameter. Pressure and current perturbations localized around the rational surface alter the stability of tearing modes. Equations governing the changes in the external solution and - are derived for arbitrary perturbations in axisymmetric toroidal geometry. The relationship of - with and without pressure flattening is obtained analytically for four pressure flattening functions. Resistive MHD codes do not contain the appropriate layer physics and therefore cannot predict stability directly. They can, however, be used to calculate -. Existing methods (Ham et al. 2012 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 54 025009) for extracting - from resistive codes are unsatisfactory when there is a finite pressure gradient at the rational surface and favourable average curvature because of the Glasser stabilizing effect. To overcome this difficulty we introduce a specific pressure flattening function that allows the earlier approach to be used. The technique is first tested numerically in cylindrical geometry with an artificial favourable curvature. Its application to toroidal geometry is then demonstrated using the toroidal tokamak tearing mode stability code T7 (Fitzpatrick et al. 1993 Nucl. Fusion 33 1533) which uses an approximate analytic equilibrium. The prospects for applying this approach to resistive MHD codes such as MARS-F (Liu et al. 2000 Phys. Two-level system (TLS) defects in dielectrics are known to limit the performance of electronic devices. We study TLS using millikelvin microwave loss measurements of three atomic layer deposited (ALD) oxide films--crystalline BeO ($\rm{c-BeO}$), amorphous $\rm{Al_2O_3}$ ($\rm{a-Al_2O_3}$), and amorphous $\rm{LaAlO_3}$ ($\rm{a-LaAlO_3}$)--and interpret them with room temperature characterization measurements. We find that the bulk loss tangent in the crystalline film is 6 times higher than in the amorphous films. In addition, its power saturation agrees with an amorphous distribution of TLS. Through a comparison of loss tangent data to secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) impurity analysis we find that the dominant loss in all film types is consistent with hydrogen-based TLS. In the amorphous films excess hydrogen is found at the ambient-exposed surface, and we extract the associated hydrogen-based surface loss tangent. Data from films with a factor of 40 difference in carbon impurities revealed that carbon is currently a negligible contributor to TLS loss., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures (preprint format)

All current estimations of the energy released by type I ELMs indicate that, in order to ensure an adequate lifetime of the divertor targets on ITER, a mechanism is required to decrease the amount of energy released by an ELM, or to eliminate ELMs altogether. One such amelioration mechanism relies on perturbing the magnetic field in the edge plasma region, either leading to more frequent, smaller ELMs (ELM mitigation) or ELM suppression. This technique of Resonant Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs) has been employed to suppress type I ELMs at high collisionality/density on DIII-D, ASDEX Upgrade, KSTAR and JET and at low collisionality on DIII-D. At ITER-like collisionality the RMPs enhance the transport of particles or energy and keep the edge pressure gradient below the 2D linear ideal MHD critical value that would trigger an ELM, whereas at high collisionality/density the type I ELMs are replaced by small type II ELMs. Although ELM suppression only occurs within limitied operational ranges, ELM mitigation is much more easily achieved. The exact parameters that determine the onset of ELM suppression are unknown but in all cases the magnetic perturbations produce 3D distortions to the plasma and enhanced particle transport. The incorporation of these 3D effects in codes will be essential in order to make quantitative predictions for future devices., Comment: 32 pages, 9 figures

Type-I Edge Localised Modes (ELMs) have been mitigated in MAST through the application of n = 3, 4 and 6 resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs). For each toroidal mode number of the non-axisymmetric applied fields, the frequency of the ELMs has been increased significantly, and the peak heat flux on the divertor plates reduced commensurately. This increase in ELM frequency occurs despite a significant drop in the edge pressure gradient, which would be expected to stabilise the peeling-ballooning modes thought to be responsible for type-I ELMs. Various mechanisms which could cause a destabilisation of the peeling-ballooning modes are presented, including pedestal widening, plasma rotation braking, three dimensional corrugation of the plasma boundary and the existence of radially extended lobe structures near to the X-point. This leads to a model aimed at resolving the apparent dichotomy of ELM control, that is to say ELM suppression occurring due to the pedestal pressure reduction below the peeling-ballooning stability boundary, whilst the reduction in pressure can also lead to ELM mitigation, which is ostensibly a destabilisation of peeling-ballooning modes. In the case of ELM mitigation, the pedestal broadening, 3d corrugation or lobes near the X-point degrade ballooning stability so much that the pedestal recovers rapidly to cross the new stability boundary at lower pressure more frequently, whilst in the case of suppression, the plasma parameters are such that the particle transport reduces the edge pressure below the stability boundary which is only mildly affected by negligible rotation braking, small edge corrugation or short, broad lobe structures., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures. The kinetic effects, due to the mode resonance with thermal particle drift motions in the reversed field pinch (RFP) plasmas, are numerically investigated for the stability of the resistive wall mode, using a non-perturbative MHD-kinetic hybrid formulation. The kinetic effects are generally found too weak to substantially change the mode growth rate, or the stability margin, re-enforcing the fact that the ideal MHD model is rather adequate for describing the RWM physics in RFP experiments., Comment: Submitted to: Plasma Phys. Rich soft X-ray emission lines of highly charged silicon ions (Si VI--Si XII) were observed by irradiating an ultra-intense laser pulse with width of 200 fs and energy of $\sim$90 mJ on the solid silicon target. The high resolution spectra of highly charged silicon ions with full-width at half maximum (FWHM) of $\sim$0.3--0.4\AA is analyzed in wavelength range of 40--90 \AA . The wavelengths of 53 prominent lines are determined with statistical uncertainties being up to 0.005 \AA . Collisional-radiative models were constructed for Si VI -- Si XII ions, which satisfactorily reproduces the experimental spectra, and helps the line identification. Calculations at different electron densities reveal that the spectra of dense plasmas are more complicate than the spectra of thin plasmas. A comparison with the Kelly database reveals a good agreement for most peak intensities, and differences for a few emission lines., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, and 1 table; In press of publication on ApJS July issue

QCD running coupling constant $\alpha_s(m_c)$ and $\alpha_s(m_b)$ are determined from heavy quarkonia $c\overline{c}$ and $b\overline{b}$ decays. The decay rates of $V\rightarrow 3g$ and $V\rightarrow e^+ e^-$ for $V=J/\psi$ and $\Upsilon$ are estimated by taking into account both relativistic and QCD radiative corrections. The decay amplitudes are derived in the Bethe-Salpeter formalism, and the decay rates are estimated by using the meson wavefunctions which are obtained with a QCD-inspired inter-quark potential. For the $V\rightarrow 3g$ decay we find the relativistic correction to be very large and to severely suppress the decay rate. Using the experimental values of ratio $R_g\equiv \frac {\Gamma (V\longrightarrow 3g)}% {\Gamma (V\longrightarrow e^{+}e^{-})}\approx 10,~32 $ for $V=J/\psi, ~\Upsilon$ respectively, and the calculated widths , we find $\alpha_{s}(m_c)=0.29\pm 0.02 $ and $\alpha_s(m_b)=0.20\pm 0.02$. These values for the QCD running coupling constant are substantially enhanced, as compared with the ones obtained without relativistic corrections, and are consistent with the QCD scale parameter $\Lambda_{\overline {MS}}^{(4)}% \approx 200MeV$.
