Search

The first FASER search for a light, long-lived particle decaying into a pair of photons is reported. The search uses LHC proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13.6~\text{TeV}$ collected in 2022 and 2023, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $57.7\text{fb}^{-1}$. A model with axion-like particles (ALPs) dominantly coupled to weak gauge bosons is the primary target. Signal events are characterised by high-energy deposits in the electromagnetic calorimeter and no signal in the veto scintillators. One event is observed, compared to a background expectation of $0.44 \pm 0.39$ events, which is entirely dominated by neutrino interactions. World-leading constraints on ALPs are obtained for masses up to $300~\text{MeV}$ and couplings to the Standard Model W gauge boson, $g_{aWW}$, around $10^{-4}$ GeV$^{-1}$, testing a previously unexplored region of parameter space. Other new particle models that lead to the same experimental signature, including ALPs coupled to gluons or photons, U(1)$_B$ gauge bosons, up-philic scalars, and a Type-I two-Higgs doublet model, are also considered for interpretation, and new constraints on previously viable parameter space are presented in this paper., Comment: 37 pages, 22 figures

This paper provides an update on the coronal mass ejection (CME) catalog maintained at the CDAW Data Center, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (https://cdaw.gsfc.nasa.gov/CME_list). This is version 2 (v2) of the Catalog that has been made as the default version as of May 1, 2024. The new features of the Catalog v2 are (i) online measurement tool, (ii) combination JavaScript movies from the STEREO and Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) missions, and (iii) insertion of newly identified CMEs for the period 1996 to 2004. The CME identification was revisited resulting in a set of $\sim$3000 new CMEs added to the Catalog. A vast majority of these CMEs are weak and narrow. Neutrino trident production of di-lepton pairs is well recognized as a sensitive probe of both electroweak physics and physics beyond the Standard Model. Although a rare process, it could be significantly boosted by such new physics, and it also allows the electroweak theory to be tested in a new regime. We demonstrate that the forward neutrino physics program at the Large Hadron Collider offers a promising opportunity to measure for the first time, dimuon neutrino tridents with a statistical significance exceeding $5\sigma$. We present predictions for various proposed experiments and outline a specific experimental strategy to identify the signal and mitigate backgrounds, based on "reverse tracking" dimuon pairs in the FASER$\nu$2 detector. Beginning from the standard Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formulation of general relativity we construct a tentative model of quantum gravity from the point of view of an observer with constant proper acceleration, just outside of a horizon of spacetime. In addition of producing the standard results of black-hole thermodynamics, our model makes an entirely new prediction that there is a certain upper bound for the energies of massive particles. For protons, for instance, this upper bound is around $1.1\times 10^{21}eV$. The result is interesting, because this energy is roughly of the same order of magnitude as are the highest energies ever measured for protons in cosmic rays., Comment: 23 pages, no figures. Inspired by Einstein's Strong Principle of Equivalence we consider the effects of quantum mechanics to the gravity-like phenomena experienced by an observer in a uniformly accelerating motion in flat spacetime. Among other things, our model of quantum gravity, derived from the first principles, predicts the Unruh effect, and a discrete area spectrum for spacelike two-surfaces., Comment: 16 pages, no figures. The initiation of a novel neutrino physics program at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the purpose-built Forward Physics Facility (FPF) proposal have motivated studies exploring the discovery potential of these searches. This requires resolving degeneracies between new predictions and uncertainties in modeling neutrino production in the forward kinematic region. The present work investigates a broad selection of existing predictions for the parent hadron spectra at FASER$\nu$ and the FPF to parameterize expected correlations in the neutrino spectra produced in their decays and to determine the highest achievable precision for their observation based on Fisher information. This allows for setting constraints on various physics processes within and beyond the Standard Model, including neutrino non-standard interactions. We also illustrate how combining multiple neutrino observables could lead to experimental confirmation of the enhanced-strangeness scenario proposed to resolve the cosmic-ray muon puzzle already during the ongoing LHC Run 3., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

Proton-proton collisions at the LHC generate a high-intensity collimated beam of neutrinos in the forward (beam) direction, characterised by energies of up to several TeV. The recent observation of LHC neutrinos by FASER$\nu$ and SND@LHC signals that this hitherto ignored particle beam is now available for scientific inquiry. Here we quantify the impact that neutrino deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) measurements at the LHC would have on the parton distributions (PDFs) of protons and heavy nuclei. We generate projections for DIS structure functions for FASER$\nu$ and SND@LHC at Run III, as well as for the FASER$\nu$2, AdvSND, and FLArE experiments to be hosted at the proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF) operating concurrently with the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). We determine that up to one million electron- and muon-neutrino DIS interactions within detector acceptance can be expected by the end of the HL-LHC, covering a kinematic region in $x$ and $Q^2$ overlapping with that of the Electron-Ion Collider. Including these DIS projections into global (n)PDF analyses, specifically PDF4LHC21, NNPDF4.0, and EPPS21, reveals a significant reduction of PDF uncertainties, in particular for strangeness and the up and down valence PDFs. We show that LHC neutrino data enables improved theoretical predictions for core processes at the HL-LHC, such as Higgs and weak gauge boson production. Our analysis demonstrates that exploiting the LHC neutrino beam effectively provides CERN with a "Neutrino-Ion Collider" without requiring modifications in its accelerator infrastructure., Comment: 42 pages, 22 figures. We report on the close similarity of coronal mass ejection (CME) properties in ground level enhancement (GLE) in solar energetic particle (SEP) events and sustained gamma ray emission (SGRE) from the Sun as indicated by low frequency type III radio bursts observed in the interplanetary medium. The complex type III bursts have an average 1 MHz duration of 36 and 34 min in the SGRE and GLE events, respectively. Similarly, the CMEs underlying SGRE and GLE have average space speeds of 1866 and 2084 km/s, respectively. These are larger than the corresponding values (32 min, 1407 km/s) for a control sample of type III bursts associated with frontside halo CMEs with sky plane speed exceeding 800 km/s. The sustained gamma-ray emission (SGRE) from the Sun is a prolonged enhancement of >100 MeV gamma-ray emission that extends beyond the flare impulsive phase.The origin of the >300 MeV protons resulting in SGRE is debated, both flares and shocks driven by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) being the suggested sites of proton acceleration. We compared the near-Sun acceleration and space speed of CMEs with 'Prompt' and 'Delayed' (SGRE) gamma-ray components (Ajello et al. 2021). We found that 'Delayed'-component-associated CMEs have higher initial acceleration and space speed than 'Prompt-only'-component-associated CMEs. We selected halo CMEs (HCMEs) associated with type II radio bursts (shock-driving HCMEs) and compared the average acceleration and space speed between HCME populations with or without SGRE events, major solar energetic particle (SEP) events, metric, or decameter-hectometric (DH) type II radio bursts. We found that the SGRE-producing HCMEs associated with a DH type II radio burst and/or a major SEP event have higher space speeds and especially initial accelerations than those without an SGRE event. We estimated the radial distance and speed of the CME-driven shocks at the end time of the 2012 January 23 and March 07 SGRE events using white-light images of STEREO Heliospheric Imagers and radio dynamic spectra of Wind WAVES. The shocks were at the radial distances of 0.6-0.8 au and their speeds were high enough (~975 km s$^{-1}$ and ~750 km s$^{-1}$, respectively) for high-energy particle acceleration. How can we design the user interfaces for augmented reality (AR) so that we can interact as simple, flexible and expressive as we can with smartphones in one hand? To explore this question, we propose PalmGazer as an interaction concept integrating eye-hand interaction to establish a singlehandedly operable menu system. In particular, PalmGazer is designed to support quick and spontaneous digital commands -- such as to play a music track, check notifications or browse visual media -- through our devised three-way interaction model: hand opening to summon the menu UI, eye-hand input for selection of items, and dragging gesture for navigation. A key aspect is that it remains always-accessible and movable to the user, as the menu supports meaningful hand and head based reference frames. We demonstrate the concept in practice through a prototypical personal UI with application probes, and describe technique designs specifically-tailored to the application UI. A qualitative evaluation highlights the system's design benefits and drawbacks, e.g., that common 2D scroll and selection tasks are simple to operate, but higher degrees of freedom may be reserved for two hands. $\chi$iplot is an HTML5-based system for interactive exploration of data and machine learning models. A key aspect is interaction, not only for the interactive plots but also between plots. Even though $\chi$iplot is not restricted to any single application domain, we have developed and tested it with domain experts in quantum chemistry to study molecular interactions and regression models. $\chi$iplot can be run both locally and online in a web browser (keeping the data local). The plots and data can also easily be exported and shared. It is known that the weak state of the heliosphere due to diminished solar activity in cycle 24 back-reacted on coronal mass ejections (CMEs) to make them appear wider for a given speed. One of the consequences of the weak state of the heliosphere is that more CMEs appear as halo CMEs (HCMEs), and halos are formed at shorter heliocentric distances. Current predictions for the strength of solar cycle (SC) 25 range from half to twice the strength of SC 24. We compare the HCME occurrence rate and other properties during the rise phase of cycles 23, 24, and 25 to weigh in on the strength of SC 25. We find that HCME and solar wind properties in SC 25 are intermediate between SCs 23 and 24, but closer to SC 24. The HCME occurrence rate, normalized to the sunspot number, is higher in SCs 24 and 25 than in SC 23. The solar wind total pressure in SC 25 is ~35% smaller than that in SC 23. Furthermore, the occurrence rates of high-energy solar energetic particle events and intense geomagnetic storms are well below the corresponding values in SC 23, but similar to those in SC 24. The Reception Reader is a web tool for studying text reuse in the Early English Books Online (EEBO-TCP) and Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) data. Users can: 1) explore a visual overview of the reception of a work, or its incoming connections, across time based on shared text segments, 2) interactively survey the details of connected documents, and 3) examine the context of reused text for "close reading". We show examples of how the tool streamlines research and exploration tasks, and discuss the utility and limitations of the user interface along with its current data sources.

The computation of the single-differential top quark-antiquark pair ($\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$) production cross section at NLO in the fixed-order expansion is examined consistently using the MSR and $\overline{\textrm{MS}}$ short-distance top quark mass schemes. A thorough investigation of the dependence of different regions of the $\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$ invariant mass spectrum on the renormalization scales $R$ and $\mu_m$ of the MSR mass $m_\mathrm{t}^{\textrm{MSR}}(R)$ and $\overline{\textrm{MS}}$ mass $\overline{m}_\mathrm{t}(\mu_m)$, respectively, is carried out. We demonstrate that a scale choice of $R\sim 80$~GeV is important for the stability of the cross-section predictions for the low $\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}$ invariant mass range, which is important for a reliable extraction of the top quark mass. Furthermore, a choice of semi-dynamical renormalization and factorization scales is preferred. These findings are expected to remain valid once non-relativistic quasi-bound state effects are included in the low invariant mass region., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures

Single-differential cross section predictions for top quark pair production are presented at next-to-leading order, using running top quark mass renormalization schemes. The evolution of the mass of the top quark is performed in the MSR scheme $m_{\mathrm{t}}^{\textrm{MSR}}(\mu)$ for renormalization scales $\mu$ below the $\overline{\textrm{MS}}$ top quark mass $\overline{m}_{\mathrm{t}}(\overline{m}_{\mathrm{t}})$, and in the $\overline{\textrm{MS}}$ scheme $\overline{m}_{\mathrm{t}}(\mu)$ for scales above. In particular, the implementation of a mass renormalization scale independent of the strong coupling renormalization scale and factorization scale in quantum chromodynamics allows investigating independent dynamical scale variations. We report on the solar and interplanetary (IP) causes of the third largest geomagnetic storm (2018 August 26) in solar cycle 24. The underlying coronal mass ejection (CME) originating from a quiescent filament region becomes a 440 km/s magnetic cloud (MC) at 1 au after ~5 days. The prolonged CME acceleration (for about 24 hrs) coincides with the time profiles of the post-eruption arcade intensity and reconnected flux. Chen et al. (2019) obtain lower speed since they assumed that the CME does not accelerate after about 12 hrs. The presence of multiple coronal holes near the filament channel and the high-speed wind from them seem to have the combined effect of producing complex rotation in the corona and IP medium resulting in a high-inclination MC. The Dst time profile in the main phase steepens significantly (rapid increase in storm intensity) coincident with the density increase (prominence material) in the second half of the MC. Simulations using the Comprehensive Inner Magnetosphere-Ionosphere (CIMI) model shows that a higher ring current energy results from larger dynamic pressure in MCs. Furthermore, the Dst index is highly correlated with the main-phase time integral of the ring current injection that includes density, consistent with the simulations. A complex temporal structure develops in the storm main phase if the underlying MC has a complex density structure during intervals of southward interplanetary magnetic field. We provide an overview of the xFitter open-source software package, review the general capabilities of the program, and highlight applications relevant to the Snowmass study. An updated version of the program (2.2.0) is available on CERN GitLab, a and this has been updated to a C++ codebase with enhanced and extended features. We also discuss some of the ongoing and future code developments that may be useful for precision studies. We survey recent analyses performed by the xFitter developers' team including: W and Z production, photon PDFs, Drell-Yan forward-backward asymmetry studies, resummation of small-x contributions, heavy quark production, constraints on the strange PDF, determination of the pion PDF, and determination of the pion Fragmentation Functions. Finally, we briefly summarize selected applications of xFitter in the literature. The xFitter program is a versatile, flexible, modular, and comprehensive tool that can provide impact studies for possible future facilities. We report on a study that compares energetic particle fluxes in corotating interaction regions (CIRs) associated with type III radio storm with those in nonstorm CIRs. In a case study, we compare the CIR particle events on 2010October 21 and 2005 November 2. The two events have similar solar and solar wind circumstances, except that the former is associated with a type III radio storm and has a higher CIR particle flux and fluence. An intense type III radio storm has been disrupted by a fast halo coronal mass ejection (CME) on 2000 April 4. The CME is also associated with a large solar energetic particle (SEP) event. The storm recovers after about10 hrs. We identified another CME that occurs on 2003 November 11 with similar CME properties but there is no type III storm in progress. The 2003 November 11 CME is also not associated with an SEP event above the background (less than 2 pfu), whereas the one with type III storm has an intense SEP event (about 56 pfu). One of the factors affecting the intensity of SEP events is the presence of seed particles that are accelerated by CME-driven shocks. Existing methods for explaining black box learning models often focus on building local explanations of model behaviour for a particular data item. It is possible to create global explanations for all data items, but these explanations generally have low fidelity for complex black box models. We propose a new supervised manifold visualisation method, SLISEMAP, that simultaneously finds local explanations for all data items and builds a (typically) two-dimensional global visualisation of the black box model such that data items with similar local explanations are projected nearby. We provide a mathematical derivation of our problem and an open source implementation implemented using the GPU-optimised PyTorch library. We compare SLISEMAP to multiple popular dimensionality reduction methods and find that SLISEMAP is able to utilise labelled data to create embeddings with consistent local white box models. We also compare SLISEMAP to other model-agnostic local explanation methods and show that SLISEMAP provides comparable explanations and that the visualisations can give a broader understanding of black box regression and classification models., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables. After providing an overview of solar activity as measured by the sunspot number (SSN) and space weather events during solar cycles (SCs) 21-24, we focus on the weak solar activity in SC 24. The weak solar activity reduces the number of energetic eruptions from the Sun and hence the number of space weather events. The speeds of coronal mass ejections (CMEs), interplanetary (IP) shocks, and the background solar wind all declined in SC 24. One of the main heliospheric consequences of weak solar activity is the reduced total (magnetic + gas) pressure, magnetic field strength, and Alfv\'en speed. There are three groups of phenomena that decline to different degrees in SC 24 relative to the corresponding ones in SC 23: (i) those that decline more than SSN does, (ii) those that decline like SSN, and (iii) those that decline less than SSN does. The decrease in the number of severe space weather events such as high-energy solar energetic particle (SEP) events and intense geomagnetic storms is deeper than the decline in SSN. CMEs expand anomalously and hence their magnetic content is diluted resulting in weaker geomagnetic storms. The reduction in the number of intense geomagnetic storms caused by corotating interaction regions is also drastic. The diminished heliospheric magnetic field in SC 24 reduces the efficiency of particle acceleration, resulting in fewer high-energy SEP events. The numbers of IP type II radio bursts, IP socks, and high-intensity energetic storm particle events closely follow the number of fast and wide CMEs (and approximately SSN). The number of halo CMEs in SC 24 declines less than SSN does, mainly due to the weak heliospheric state. Phenomena such as IP CMEs and magnetic clouds related to frontside halos also do not decline significantly. The sustained gamma-ray emission (SGRE) events from the Sun are associated with an ultrafast (2000 km/s or greater) halo coronal mass ejection (CME) and a type II radio burst in the decameter-hectometric (DH) wavelengths. The SGRE duration is linearly related to the type II burst duration indicating that >300 MeV protons required for SGREs are accelerated by the same shock that accelerates tens of keV electrons that produce type II bursts. When magnetically well connected, the associated solar energetic particle (SEP) event has a hard spectrum, indicating copious acceleration of high-energy protons. In one of the SGRE events observed on 2014 January 7 by Fermi/LAT, the SEP event detected by GOES has a very soft spectrum with not many particles beyond 100 MeV. This contradicts the presence of the SGRE, implying the presence of significant number of >300 MeV protons. Furthermore, the durations of the type II burst and the SGRE agree with the known linear relationship between them (Gopalswamy et al. 2018, ApJ 868, L19). We show that the soft spectrum is due to poor magnetic connectivity of the shock nose to an Earth observer. Even though the location of the eruption (S15W11) is close to the disk center, the CME propagated non-radially making the CME flank crossing the ecliptic rather than the nose. High-energy particles are accelerated near the nose, so they do not reach GOES but they do precipitate to the vicinity of the eruption region to produce SGRE. Causal structure discovery (CSD) models are making inroads into several domains, including Earth system sciences. Their widespread adaptation is however hampered by the fact that the resulting models often do not take into account the domain knowledge of the experts and that it is often necessary to modify the resulting models iteratively. We present a workflow that is required to take this knowledge into account and to apply CSD algorithms in Earth system sciences. At the same time, we describe open research questions that still need to be addressed. We present a way to interactively modify the outputs of the CSD algorithms and argue that the user interaction can be modelled as a greedy finding of the local maximum-a-posteriori solution of the likelihood function, which is composed of the likelihood of the causal model and the prior distribution representing the knowledge of the expert user. We use a real-world data set for examples constructed in collaboration with our co-authors, who are the domain area experts. We show that finding maximally usable causal models in the Earth system sciences or other similar domains is a difficult task which contains many interesting open research questions. We report on the 2015 June 25 sustained gamma-ray emission (SGRE) event associated with a halo coronal mass ejection and a type II radio burst in the decameter-hectometric (DH) wavelengths. The duration and ending frequency of the type II burst are linearly related to the SGRE duration as found in previous works involving intense gamma-ray events. We study neologism use in two samples of early English correspondence, from 1640--1660 and 1760--1780. Of especial interest are the early adopters of new vocabulary, the social groups they represent, and the types and functions of their neologisms. We describe our computer-assisted approach and note the difficulties associated with massive variation in the corpus. Our findings include that while male letter-writers tend to use neologisms more frequently than women, the eighteenth century seems to have provided more opportunities for women and the lower ranks to participate in neologism use as well. In both samples, neologisms most frequently occur in letters written between close friends, which could be due to this less stable relationship triggering more creative language use. We review the possible effects of the miscalibration of the flavor-dependent Jet Energy Corrections ($F_{\mathrm{Corr}}$) on the D{\O} lepton+jets top mass measurement. The work is based on a previous study, where the D{\O} $F_{\mathrm{Corr}}$ calibration procedure was repeated based on the release of the internal D{\O} notes after a 5-year moratorium. The cited study was motivated by the extraordinary precision claimed by D{\O} in their top mass measurement. Using a Pythia6-based $F_{\mathrm{Corr}}$ recalibration, the $m_t$ result was shifted from 174.95 to 173.16 GeV. Moreover, utilizing a Herwig7-based $F_{\mathrm{Corr}}$ calibration (not accounted for in D{\O} studies), a shift down to 171.84 GeV was observed. We find this both convincing and specific evidence for re-reviewing a part of the $F_{\mathrm{Corr}}$ calibration process. We investigate the opportunities and challenges of running virtual reality (VR) studies remotely. Today, many consumers own head-mounted displays (HMDs), allowing them to participate in scientific studies from their homes using their own equipment. Researchers can benefit from this approach by being able to reach a more diverse study population and to conduct research at times when it is difficult to get people into the lab (cf. the COVID pandemic). We first conducted an online survey (N=227), assessing HMD owners' demographics, their VR setups, and their attitudes towards remote participation. We then identified different approaches to running remote studies and conducted two case studies for an in-depth understanding. We synthesize our findings into a framework for remote VR studies, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the different approaches, and derive best practices. Our work is valuable for HCI researchers conducting VR studies outside labs.

We present a clear case of a Diffuse Interplanetary Radio Emission (DIRE) event observed during 2002 March 11-12 in association with a fast coronal mass ejection (CME). In the previous event reported [1], there were two CMEs, and a detailed analysis was required to pin down the underlying CME. In the event presented here, the CME association is unambiguous, and the DIRE is found to originate from the flanks of the CME-driven shock. We also provide quantitative explanation for not observing radio emission from the shock nose. We report on the Balloonborne Investigation of Temperature and Speed of Electrons in the corona (BITSE) mission launched recently to observe the solar corona from about 3 Rs to 15 Rs at four wavelengths (393.5, 405.0, 398.7, and 423.4 nm). The BITSE instrument is an externally occulted single stage coronagraph developed at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in collaboration with the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). BITSE used a polarization camera that provided polarization and total brightness images of size 1024 x 1024 pixels. The Wallops Arc Second Pointing (WASP) system developed at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility (WFF) was used for Sun-pointing. The coronagraph and WASP were mounted on a gondola provided by WFF and launched from the Fort Sumner, New Mexico station of Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility (CSBF) on September 18, 2019. BITSE obtained 17,060 coronal images at a float altitude of about 128,000 feet (39 km) over a period of about 4 hrs. BITSE flight software was based on NASA's core Flight System, which was designed to help develop flight quality software. We used EVTM (Ethernet Via Telemetry) to download science data during operations; all images were stored onboard using flash storage. At the end of the mission, all data were recovered and analyzed. Preliminary analysis shows that BITSE imaged the solar minimum corona with the equatorial streamers on the east and west limbs. The narrow streamers observed by BITSE are in good agreement with the geometric properties obtained by SOHO coronagraphs in the overlapping physical domain. In spite of the small signal-to-noise ratio (about 14) we were able to obtain the temperature and flow speed of the western steamer region in the range 4 to 7 Rs as: For the equatorial streamer on the west limb, we obtained a temperature of 1.0 +/- 0.3 MK and a flow speed of about 260 km/s with a large uncertainty interval., Comment: 40 pages, 25 figures, 4 tables, 3 electronic supplements, to appear in Solar Physics

Recurrent respiratory symptoms are common in infants but the paucity of lung function tests suitable for routine use in infants is a widely acknowledged clinical problem. In this study we evaluated tidal breathing variability (expiratory variability index, EVI) measured at home during sleep using impedance pneumography (IP) as a marker of lower airway obstruction in 36 infants (mean age 12.8 [range 6-23] months) with recurrent respiratory symptoms. Lowered EVI was associated with lower lung function (VmaxFRC), higher asthma risk, and obstructive symptoms, but not with nasal congestion. EVI measured using IP is a potential technique for lung function testing in infants.

Solar cycle (SC) 24 has come to an end by the end of 2019, providing information on two full cycles to understand the manifestations of SC 24, the smallest cycle in the Space Age that has resulted in a weak heliospheric state indicated by the reduced pressure. The backreaction of the heliospheric state is to make the coronal mass ejections (CMEs) appear physically bigger than in SC 23, but their magnetic content has been diluted resulting in a lower geoeffectiveness. The heliospheric magnetic field is also lower in SC 24, leading to the dearth of high-energy solar energetic particle (SEP) events. These space weather events closely follow fast and wide (FW) CMEs. All but FW CMEs are higher in number in SC 24. The CME rate vs. sunspot number (SSN) correlation is high in both cycles but the rate increases faster in SC 24. We revisit the study of limb CMEs (those with source regions within 30 degrees from the limb) previously studied over partial cycles. We find that limb CMEs are slower in SC 24 as in the general population but wider. Limb halo CMEs follow the same trend of slower SC-24 CMEs. However, the SC-24 CMEs become halos at a shorter distance from the Sun. Thus, slower CMEs becoming halos sooner is a clear indication of the backreaction of the weaker heliospheric state on CMEs. We report on a statistical study of prominence eruptions (PEs) using a catalog of these events routinely imaged by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) in the 304 \r{A} pass band. Using an algorithm developed as part of an LWS project, we have detected PEs in 304 \r{A} synoptic images with 2-min cadence since May 2010. A catalog of these PEs is made available online (https://cdaw.gsfc.nasa.gov/CME_list/autope/). The 304 \r{A} images are polar-transformed and divided by a background map (pixels with minimum intensity during one day) to get the ratio maps above the limb. The prominence regions are defined as pixels with a ratio $\ge$2. Two prominence regions with more than 50% of pixels overlapping are considered the same prominence. If the height of a prominence increases monotonically in 5 successive images, it is considered eruptive. All the PEs seen above the limb are detected by the routine, but only PEs with width $\ge$15{\deg} are included in the catalog to eliminate polar jets and other small-scale mass motions. The identifications are also cross-checked with the PEs identified in Nobeyama Radioheliograph images (http://solar.nro.nao.ac.jp/norh/html/prominence/). The catalog gives the date, time, central position angle, latitude, and width of the eruptive prominence. The catalog also provides links to JavaScript movies that combine SDO/AIA images with GOES soft X-ray data to identify the associated flares, and with SOHO/LASCO C2 images to identify the associated coronal mass ejections. We examined the statistical properties of the PEs and found that the high-latitude PE speed decreased with the decreasing of the average polar magnetic field strength of the previous cycle., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures

The radial speed of a coronal mass ejection (CME) determines the shock-driving capability of a CME as indicated by the presence of a type II radio burst. Here we report on the April 18, 2014 CME that was associated with a type II radio burst in the metric and interplanetary domains. We used the radio-burst data provided by the San Vito Solar Observatory of the Radio Solar Telescope Network and data from the Wind spacecraft. The CME is a full halo in the field of view of the coronagraphs on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The CME was also observed by the coronagraphs on board the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO). We computed the CME shock and flux rope speeds based on the multi-view observations by the different coronagraphs and by EUV instruments. We determined the shock speed from metric and interplanetary radio observations and found them to be consistent with white-light observations, provided the metric type II burst and its continuation into the decameter-hectometric domain are produced at the shock flanks, where the speed is still high enough to accelerate electrons that produce the type II bursts. Interestingly, there was an interplanetary type II burst segment consistent with an origin at the shock nose suggesting that the curved shock was crossing plasma levels separated by a few solar radii. We conclude that the CME speed is high enough to produce the interplanetary Type II burst and a solar energetic particle (SEP) event. Metric type II solar radio bursts and solar energetic particles (SEPs) are both associated with shock fronts driven by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in the solar corona. Recent studies of ground level enhancements (GLEs), regular large solar energetic particle (SEP) events and filament eruption (FE) associated large SEP events have shown that SEP events are organized by spectral index of proton fluence spectra and by the average starting frequencies of the associated type II radio bursts. Both these results indicate a hierarchical relationship between CME kinematics and SEP event properties. In this study, we expand the investigations to fluence spectra and the longitudinal extent of metric type II associated SEP events including low-intensity SEP events. We utilize SEP measurements of particle instruments on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft together with radio bursts observations by ground-based radio observatories during solar cycle 24. Our results show that low-intensity SEP events follow the hierarchy of spectral index or the hierarchy of the starting frequency of type II radio bursts. We also find indications of a trend between the onset frequency of metric type II bursts and the estimated longitudinal extent of the SEP events although the scatter of data points is quite large. These two results strongly support the idea of SEP acceleration by shocks. We report on the source of greater than 300 MeV protons during the SOL2014-09-01 sustained gamma-ray emission (SGRE) event based on multi-wavelength data from a wide array of space- and ground-based instruments. Based on the eruption geometry we provide concrete explanation for the spatially and temporally extended {\gamma}-ray emission from the eruption. We show that the associated flux rope is of low inclination (roughly oriented in the east-west direction), which enables the associated shock to extend to the frontside. We compare the centroid of the SGRE source with the location of the flux rope leg to infer that the high-energy protons must be precipitating between the flux rope leg and the shock front. The durations of the SOL2014-09-01 SGRE event and the type II radio burst agree with the linear relationship between these parameters obtained for other SGRE events with duration exceeding 3 hrs. The fluence spectrum of the SEP event is very hard, indicating the presence of high-energy (GeV) particles in this event. This is further confirmed by the presence of an energetic coronal mass ejection (CME) with a speed more than 2000 km/s, similar to those in ground level enhancement (GLE) events. The type II radio burst had emission components from metric to kilometric wavelengths as in events associated with GLE events. All these factors indicate that the high-energy particles from the shock were in sufficient numbers needed for the production of {\gamma}-rays via neutral pion decay., Comment: 39 pages, 14 figures, to appear in Solar Physics

Solar type II radio bursts are the signature of particle acceleration by shock waves in the solar corona and interplanetary medium. The shocks originate in solar eruptions involving coronal mass ejections (CMEs) moving at super-Alfvenic speeds. Type II bursts occur at frequencies ranging from hundreds of MHz to tens of kHz, which correspond to plasma frequencies prevailing in the inner heliosphere from the base of the solar corona to the vicinity of Earth. Type II radio bursts occurring at frequencies below the ionospheric cutoff are of particular importance, because they are due to very energetic CMEs that can disturb a large volume of the heliosphere. The underlying shocks accelerate not only electrons that produce the type II bursts, but also protons and heavy ions that have serious implications for space weather. We outline a token model for Truebit, a retrofitting, blockchain enhancement which enables secure, community-based computation. As an attempt to realize Wheeler's "it-from-bit proposal" that physics should be reduced to simple yes-no questions we consider a model of loop quantum gravity, where the only allowed values of the quantum numbers $j_p$ at the punctures of the spin network on the spacelike two-surfaces of spacetime are $0$ and $\frac{1}{2}$. When $j_p=0$, the puncture is in the vacuum, and it does not contribute to the area of the two-surface, whereas when $j_p=\frac{1}{2}$, the puncture is in an excited state, and the allowed values of the associated quantum number $m_p$ are $-\frac{1}{2}$ and $+\frac{1}{2}$. As a consequence, the spin network used as a model of spacetime is analogous to a system of particles with spin $\frac{1}{2}$, and every puncture carries exactly one bit of information. When applied to spacetimes with horizon our model enables us to find an explicit expression for the partition function of spacetime. Using this partition function we may, among other things, obtain the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy law for black holes. When applied to cosmological models with horizon the partition function predicts a cosmic phase transition in the early Universe, where the cosmological constant went through a dramatic decrease and the matter of the Universe was created out of the vacuum., Comment: 47 pages. We report on the properties of type II radio bursts observed by the Radio and Plasma Wave Experiment (WAVES) on board the Wind spacecraft over the past two solar cycles. We confirm that the associated coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are fast and wide, more than half the CMEs being halos. About half of the type II bursts extend down to 0.5 MHz, corresponding to a heliocentric distance of tens of solar radii. The DH type II bursts are mostly confined to the active region belt and their occurrence rate follows the solar activity cycle. The Rosette Nebula is an HII region ionized mainly by the stellar cluster NGC 2244. Elephant trunks, globules, and globulettes are seen at the interface where the HII region and the surrounding molecular shell meet. We have observed a field in the northwestern part of the Rosette Nebula where we study the small globules protruding from the shell. Our aim is to measure their properties and study their star formation history in continuation of our earlier study of the features of the region. We imaged the region in broadband near-infrared (NIR) JsHKs filters and narrowband H2 1-0 S(1), P$\beta$, and continuum filters using the SOFI camera at the ESO/NTT. The imaging was used to study the stellar population and surface brightness, create visual extinction maps, and locate star formation. Mid-infrared (MIR) Spitzer IRAC and WISE and optical NOT images were used to further study the star formation and the structure of the globules. The NIR and MIR observations indicate an outflow, which is confirmed with CO observations made with APEX. The globules have mean number densities of ~$4.6\times10^4 \rm cm^{-3}$. P$\beta$ is seen in absorption in the cores of the globules where we measure visual extinctions of 11-16 mag. The shell and the globules have bright rims in the observed bands. In the Ks band 20 to 40% of the emission is due to fluorescent emission in the 2.12 $\mu$m H2 line similar to the tiny dense globulettes we studied earlier in a nearby region. We identify several stellar NIR excess candidates and four of them are also detected in the Spitzer IRAC 8.0 $\mu$m image and studied further. We find an outflow with a cavity wall bright in the 2.124 $\mu$m H2 line and at 8.0 $\mu$m in one of the globules. The outflow originates from a Class I young stellar object (YSO) embedded deep inside the globule. An H$\alpha$ image suggests the YSO drives a possible parsec-scale outflow. We report on further evidence that solar energetic particles are organized by the kinematic properties of coronal mass ejections (CMEs)[1]. In particular, we focus on the starting frequency of type II bursts, which is related to the distance from the Sun where the radio emission starts. We find that the three groups of solar energetic particle (SEP) events known to have distinct values of CME initial acceleration, also have distinct average starting frequencies of the associated type II bursts. SEP events with ground level enhancement (GLE) have the highest starting frequency (107 MHz), while those associated with filament eruption (FE) in quiescent regions have the lowest starting frequency (22 MHz); regular SEP events have intermediate starting frequency (81 MHz). Taking the onset time of type II bursts as the time of shock formation, we determine the shock formation heights measured from the Sun center. We find that the shocks form on average closest to the Sun (1.51 Rs) in GLE events, farthest from the Sun in FE SEP events (5.38 Rs), and at intermediate distances in regular SEP events (1.72 Rs). Finally, we present the results of a case study of a CME with high initial acceleration (~3 km s^-2) and a type II radio burst with high starting frequency (~200 MHz) but associated with a minor SEP event. The Carina nebula hosts a large number of globulettes. The majority are of planetary mass, but there are also those with masses of several tens up to a few hundred Jupiter masses. We carried out radio observations of molecular line emission in 12CO and 13CO (2-1) and (3-2) of 12 larger objects in addition of positions in adjacent shell structures using APEX. All selected objects were detected with radial velocities shifted relative to the emission from related shell structures and background molecular clouds. Globulettes along the western part of an extended dust shell show a small spread in velocity with small velocity shifts relative to the shell. This system of globulettes and shell structures in the foreground of the bright nebulosity surrounding the cluster Trumpler 14 is expanding with a few km/s relative to the cluster. The Carina globulettes are compact and denser than objects of similar mass studied previously in the Rosette nebula. Some globulettes in Tr 14 are located far from any shell structures. These objects move at a similar speed as the globulettes along the shell. The distribution and velocities of the globulettes studied suggest that they have originated from eroding shells and elephant trunks., Comment: 8 pages

Named Entity Recognition (NER), search, classification and tagging of names and name like frequent informational elements in texts, has become a standard information extraction procedure for textual data. NER has been applied to many types of texts and different types of entities: newspapers, fiction, historical records, persons, locations, chemical compounds, protein families, animals etc. In general a NER system's performance is genre and domain dependent and also used entity categories vary (Nadeau and Sekine, 2007). The most general set of named entities is usually some version of three partite categorization of locations, persons and organizations. In this paper we report first large scale trials and evaluation of NER with data out of a digitized Finnish historical newspaper collection Digi. Experiments, results and discussion of this research serve development of the Web collection of historical Finnish newspapers. Digi collection contains 1,960,921 pages of newspaper material from years 1771-1910 both in Finnish and Swedish. We use only material of Finnish documents in our evaluation. The OCRed newspaper collection has lots of OCR errors; its estimated word level correctness is about 70-75 % (Kettunen and P\"a\"akk\"onen, 2016). Our principal NER tagger is a rule-based tagger of Finnish, FiNER, provided by the FIN-CLARIN consortium. We show also results of limited category semantic tagging with tools of the Semantic Computing Research Group (SeCo) of the Aalto University. Three other tools are also evaluated briefly. This research reports first published large scale results of NER in a historical Finnish OCRed newspaper collection. The backside coronal mass ejection (CME) of 2012 July 23 had a short Sun to Earth shock transit time (18.5 hours). The associated solar energetic particle (SEP) event had a >10 MeV proton flux peaking at ~5000 pfu, and the energetic storm particle (ESP) event was an order of magnitude larger, making it the most intense event in the space era at these energies. By a detailed analysis of the CME, shock, and SEP characteristics, we find that the July 23 event is consistent with a high-energy SEP event (accelerating particles to GeV energies). The time of maximum and fluence spectra in the range 10-100 MeV were very hard, similar to those of ground level enhancement (GLE) events. We found a hierarchical relationship between the CME initial speeds and the fluence spectral indices: CMEs with low initial speeds had SEP events with the softest spectra, while those with highest initial speeds had SEP events with the hardest spectra. CMEs attaining intermediate speeds result in moderately hard spectra. The July 23 event was in the group of hard-spectrum events. During the July 23 event, the shock speed (>2000 km s^-1), the initial acceleration (~1.70 km s^-2), and the shock formation height (~1.5 solar radii) were all typical of GLE events. The associated type II burst had emission components from metric to kilometric wavelengths suggesting a strong shock. These observation confirm that the 2012 July 23 event is likely to be an extreme event in terms of the energetic particles it accelerated., Comment: 36 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ on October 18, 2016

We report on our study of radio source regions during the type II radio burst on 2013 May 22 based on direction finding (DF) analysis of the Wind/WAVES and STEREO/WAVES (SWAVES) radio observations at decameter-hectometric (DH) wavelengths. The type II emission showed an enhancement that coincided with interaction of two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) launched in sequence along closely spaced trajectories. The triangulation of the SWAVES source directions posited the ecliptic projections of the radio sources near the line connecting the Sun and the STEREO-A spacecraft. The WAVES and SWAVES source directions revealed shifts in the latitude of the radio source indicating that the spatial location of the dominant source of the type II emission varies during the CME-CME interaction. The WAVES source directions close to 1 MHz frequencies matched the location of the leading edge of the primary CME seen in the images of the LASCO/C3 coronagraph. This correspondence of spatial locations at both wavelengths confirms that the CME-CME interaction region is the source of the type II enhancement. Comparison of radio and white-light observations also showed that at lower frequencies scattering significantly affects radio wave propagation., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report on a case study of the complex type II radio burst of 2012 January 19 and its association with a white light coronal mass ejection (CME). The complexity can be described as the appearance of an additional type II burst component and strong intensity variation. The dynamic spectrum shows a pair of type II bursts with fundamental harmonic structures, one confined to decameter-hectometric (DH) wavelengths and the other extending to kilometric (km) wavelengths. An intense type IV radio burst was observed by the STEREO Behind (STB) spacecraft located about 144 degres behind Earth. The burst was associated with a large solar eruption that occurred on the backside of the Sun (N05E151) close to the disk center in the STB view. The eruption was also observed by the STEREO Ahead (STA) spacecraft (located at 149 degrees ahead of Earth) as an eruption close to the west limb (N05W60) in that view. The type IV burst was complete in STB observations in that the envelope reached the lowest frequency and then receded to higher frequencies. The burst was partial viewed from STA, revealing only the edge coming down to the lowest frequency. The type IV burst was not observed at all near Earth because the source was 61 degrees behind the east limb. The eruption was associated with a low-frequency type II burst observed in all three views, although it was not very intense. Solar energetic particles were also observed at both STEREOs and at SOHO, suggesting that the shock was much extended, consistent with the very high speed of the CME (about 2048 km/s). These observations suggest that the type IV emission is directed along a narrow cone above the flare site. We point out that with a specific counting of states loop quantum gravity implies that black holes perform a phase transition at a certain characteristic temperature $T_C$. In this phase transition the punctures of the spin network on the stretched horizon of the black hole jump, in effect, from the vacuum to the excited states. The characteristic temperature $T_C$ may be regarded as the lowest possible temperature of the hole. From the point of view of a distant observer at rest with respect to the hole the characteristic temperature $T_C$ corresponds to the Hawking temperature of the hole., Comment: 7 pages, no figures, published in the Physical Review D.
