We prove that if a certain entry in the map of the Hadamard-Perron theorem is $T$-periodic in one of the variables, then the stable manifold guaranteed by the Hadamard-Perron theorem is a graph of a $T$-periodic function. As an application, we extend the classical Levinson's result about the occurrence of an attracting closed invariant curve near a stable cycle of a system of autonomous equations under periodic perturbations to hybrid differential equations.

A recent result by Gudoshnikov et al [SIAM J. Control Optim. 2022] ensures finite-time convergence of the stress-vector of an elastoplastic lattice spring model under assumption that the vector $g'(t)$ of the applied displacement controlled-loading lies strictly inside the normal cone to the associated polyhedral set (that depends on mechanical parameters of the springs). Determination of the terminal distribution of stresses has been thereby linked to a problem of spotting a face on the boundary of the polyhedral set where the normal cone contains vector $g'(t)$. In this paper the above-mentioned problem of spotting an eligible face is converted into a search for an eligible set of springs that have a certain topological property with respect to the entire graph (of springs). Specifically, we prove that eligible springs are those that keep non-zero lengths after their nodes are collapsed with the nodes of the displacement-controlled loading after a finite number of eligible displacements of the nodes of the graph. The proposed result allows to judge about possible distribution of plastic deformations in elastoplastic lattice spring models directly from the topology of the associated graph of springs. A benchmark example is provided.

Disordered network materials abound in both nature and synthetic situations while rigorous analysis of their nonlinear mechanical behaviors still is very challenging. The purpose of this paper is to connect the mathematical framework of sweeping process originally proposed by Moreau to a generic class of Lattice Spring Models with plasticity phenomenon. We explicitly construct a sweeping process and provide numerical schemes to find the evolution of stresses in a Lattice Spring Model with infinitesimal strains and perfect plasticity. In particular, we develop a highly efficient "leapfrog" computational framework that allow ones to rigorously track the progression of plastic events in the system based on the sweeping process theory. The utility of our framework is demonstrated by analyzing the elastoplastic stresses in a novel class of disordered network materials exhibiting the property of hyperuniformity, in which the infinite wave-length density fluctuations associated with the distribution of network nodes are completely suppressed. We find enhanced mechanical properties such as increasing stiffness, yield strength and tensile strength as the degree of hyperuniformity of the material system increases. Our results have implications for optimal network material design and our event-based framework can be readily generalized for nonlinear stress analysis of other heterogeneous material systems. We also include some insights to the model from the viewpoint of the rigidity theory.

We use the ideas of Adly-Attoych-Cabot [Adv. Mech. Math., 12, Springer, 2006] on finite-time stabilization of dry friction oscillators to establish a theorem on finite-time stabilization of differential inclusions with a moving polyhedral constraint (known as polyhedral sweeping processes) of the form $C+c(t).$ We then employ the ideas of Moreau [New variational techniques in mathematical physics, CIME, 1973] to apply our theorem to a system of elastoplastic springs with a displacement-controlled loading. We show that verifying the condition of the theorem ultimately leads to the following two problems: (i) identifying the active vertex ``A'' or the active face ``A'' of the polyhedron that the vector $c'(t)$ points at; (ii) computing the distance from $c'(t)$ to the normal cone to the polyhedron at ``A''. We provide a computational guide to implement steps (i)-(ii) in the case of an arbitrary elastoplastic system and apply the guide to a particular example. We consider the simplest model of a passive biped walking down a slope given by the equations of switched coupled pendula (McGeer, 1990). Following the fundamental work by Garcia et al (1998), we view the slope of the ground as a small parameter $\gamma\ge 0$. When $\gamma=0$ the system can be solved in closed form and the existence of a family of limit cycles (i.e. potential walking cycles) can be established explicitly. As observed in Garcia et al (1998), the family of limit cycles disappears when $\gamma$ increases and only isolated asymptotically stable cycles (walking cycles) persist. However, no rigorous proofs of such a bifurcation (often referred to as Melnikov bifurcation) have ever been reported. Networks of elastoplastic springs (elastoplastic systems) have been linked to differential equations with polyhedral constraints in the pioneering paper by Moreau (1974). Periodic loading of an elastoplastic system, therefore, corresponds to a periodic motion of the polyhedral constraint. According to Krejci (1996), every solution of a sweeping process with a periodically moving constraint asymptotically converges to a periodic orbit. Understanding whether such an asymptotic periodic orbit is unique or there can be an entire family of asymptotic periodic orbits (that form a periodic attractor) has been an open problem since then. Since suitable small perturbation of a polyhedral constraint seems to be always capable to destroy a potential family of periodic orbits, it is expected that none of potential periodic attractor is structurally stable. In the present paper we give a simple example to prove that even though the periodic attractor (of non-stationary periodic solutions) can be destroyed by little perturbation of the moving constraint, the periodic attractor resists perturbations of the physical parameters of the mechanical model (i.e. the parameters of the network of elastoplastic springs)., Comment: 6 pages

Building upon the technique that we developed earlier for perturbed sweeping processes with convex moving constraints and monotone vector fields (Kamenskii et al, Nonlinear Anal. Hybrid Syst. 30, 2018), the present paper establishes global asymptotic stability of global and periodic solutions to perturbed sweeping processes with prox-regular moving constraint. Our conclusion can be formulated as follows: closer the constraint to a convex one, weaker monotonicity is required to keep the sweeping process globally asymptotically stable. We explain why the proposed technique is not capable to prove global asymptotic stability of a periodic regime in a crowd motion model (Cao-Mordukhovich, DCDS-B 22, 2017). We introduce and analyze a toy model which clarifies the extent of applicability of our result.

We consider a Caratheodory differential equation with a state-dependent convex constraint that changes BV-continuously in time (a perturbed BV-continuous state-dependent sweeping processes). By setting up an appropriate catching-up algorithm we prove solvability of the initial value problem. Then, for sweeping processes with $T$-periodic right-hand-sides, we prove the existence of at least one $T$-periodic solution. Finally, we further consider a $T$-periodic sweeping process which is close to an autonomous sweeping process with a constant constraint and prove the existence of a $T$-periodic solution specifically located near the boundary switched equilibrium of the autonomous sweeping process.

We establish a theorem on bifurcation of limit cycles from a focus boundary equilibrium of an impacting system, which is universally applicable to prove bifurcation of limit cycles from focus boundary equilibria in other types of piecewise-smooth systems, such as Filippov systems and sweeping processes. Specifically, we assume that one of the subsystems of the piecewise-smooth system under consideration admits a focus equilibrium that lie on the switching manifold at the bifurcation value of the parameter. In each of the three cases, we derive a linearized system which is capable to conclude about the occurrence of a finite-time stable limit cycle from the above-mentioned focus equilibrium when the parameter crosses the bifurcation value. A switched equilibrium of a switched system of two subsystems is a such a point where the vector fields of the two subsystems point strictly towards one another. Using the concept of stable convex combination that was developed by Wicks-Peleties-DeCarlo (1998) for linear systems, Bolzern-Spinelli (2004) offered a design of a state feedback switching rule that is capable to stabilize an affine switched system to any switched equilibrium. The state feedback switching rule of Bolzern-Spinelli gives a nonlinear (quadratic) switching threshold passing through the switched equilibrium. In this paper we prove that the switching threshold (i.e. the associated switching rule) can be chosen linear, if each of the subsystems of the switched system under consideration are stable.

For switched systems that switch between distinct globally stable equilibria, we offer closed-form formulas that lock oscillations in the required neighborhood of the equilibria. Motivated by non-spiking neuron models, the main focus of the paper is on the case of planar switched affine systems, where we use properties of nested cylinders coming from quadratic Lyapunov functions. In particular, for the first time ever, we use the dwell-time concept in order to give an explicit condition for non-spiking of linear neuron models with periodically switching current. An extension to the general nonlinear case is also given.

We consider a switched system of two subsystems that are activated as the trajectory enters the regions $\{(x,y):x>\bar x\}$ and $\{(x,y):x<-\bar x\}$ respectively, where $\bar x$ is a positive parameter. We prove that a regular asymptotically stable equilibrium of the associated Filippov equation of sliding motion (corresponding to $\bar x=0$) yields an orbitally stable limit cycle for all $\bar x>0$ sufficiently small. The research is motivated by an application to a dc-dc power converter, where $\bar x>0$ is used in place of $\bar x=0$ to avoid sliding motions.

This paper develops an analytic framework to design both stress-controlled and displacement-controlled T-periodic loadings which make the quasistatic evolution of a one-dimensional network of elastoplastic springs converging to a unique periodic regime. The solution of such an evolution problem is a function t-> (e(t),p(t)), where e_i(t) and p_i(t) are the elastic and plastic deformations of spring i, defined on [t0,\infty) by the initial condition (e(t0),p(t0)). After we rigorously convert the problem into a Moreau sweeping process with a moving polyhedron C(t) in a vector space E of dimension d, it becomes natural to expect (based on a result by Krejci) that the solution t->(e(t),p(t)) always converges to a T-periodic function. The achievement of this paper is in spotting a class of loadings where the Krejci's limit doesn't depend on the initial condition (e(t0),p(t0)) and so all the trajectories approach the same T-periodic regime. The proposed class of sweeping processes is the one for which the normal vectors of any d different facets of the moving polyhedron C(t) are linearly independent. We further link this geometric condition to mechanical properties of the given network of springs. We discover that the normal vectors of any d different facets of the moving polyhedron C(t) are linearly independent, if the number of displacement-controlled loadings is two less the number of nodes of the given network of springs and when the magnitude of the stress-controlled loading is sufficiently large (but admissible). The result can be viewed as an analogue of the high-gain control method for elastoplastic systems. Specifically, we first prove that any sweeping processes with almost periodic monotone right-hand-sides admits a globally exponentially stable almost periodic solution. We describe the behavior of solutions of switched systems with multiple globally exponentially stable equilibria. We introduce an ideal attractor and show that the solutions of the switched system stay in any given $\varepsilon$-inflation of the ideal attractor if the frequency of switchings is slower than a suitable dwell time $T$. In addition, we give conditions to ensure that the $\varepsilon$-inflation is a global attractor. Finally, we investigate the effect of the increase of the number of switchings on the total time that the solutions need to go from one region to another., Comment: 5 figures

An anti-lock braking system (ABS) is the primary motivation for this research. The ABS controller switches the actions of charging and discharging valves in the hydraulic actuator of the brake cylinder based on the wheels' angular speed and acceleration. The controller is, therefore, modeled by discontinuous differential equations where two smooth vector fields are separated by a switching manifold S. The goal of the controller is to maximize the tire-road friction force during braking (and, in particular, to prevent the wheel lock-up). Since the optimal slip L of the wheel is known rather approximately, the actual goal of the controller is to achieve such a switching strategy that makes the dynamics converging to a limit cycle surrounding the region of prospective values of L. In this paper we show that the required limit cycle can be obtained as a bifurcation from a point x0 of S when a suitable parameter D crosses 0. The point x0 turns out to be a fold-fold singularity (the vector fields on the two sides of S are tangent one another at x0) and the parameter D measures the deviation of the switching manifold from a hyperplane. The proposed result is based on an extension of the classical fold bifurcation theory available for smooth maps. Aim of the paper is to provide a method to analyze the behavior of $T$-periodic solutions $x_\eps, \eps>0$, of a perturbed planar Hamiltonian system near a cycle $x_0$, of smallest period $T$, of the unperturbed system. The perturbation is represented by a $T$-periodic multivalued map which vanishes as $\eps\to0$. In several problems from nonsmooth mechanical systems this multivalued perturbation comes from the Filippov regularization of a nonlinear discontinuous $T$-periodic term. \noindent Through the paper, assuming the existence of a $T$-periodic solution $x_\eps$ for $\eps>0$ small, under the condition that $x_0$ is a nondegenerate cycle of the linearized unperturbed Hamiltonian system we provide a formula for the distance between any point $x_0(t)$ and the trajectories $x_\eps([0,T])$ along a transversal direction to $x_0(t).$

By means of a linear scaling of the variables we convert a singular bifurcation equation in $\R^n$ into an equivalent equation to which the classical implicit function theorem can be directly applied. This allows to deduce the existence of a unique branch of solutions as well as a relevant property of the spectrum of the derivative of the singular bifurcation equation along the branch. We use these results to show the existence, uniqueness and the asymptotic stability of periodic solutions of a $T$-periodically perturbed autonomous system bifurcating from a $T$-periodic limit cycle of the autonomous unperturbed system. This problem is classical, but the novelty of the method proposed is that it allows us to solve the problem without any reduction of the dimension of the state space as it is usually done in the literature by means of the Lyapunov-Schmidt method.

We prove asymptotic stability of periodic oscillations in two-bodies vibrating screen model under assumption that the frequencies w1 and w2 of the generating system (without obstacle and periodic driving) satisfy the assumption w1:w2=1:2. We also assume that the frequency of the external periodic driving equals to w1. These settings correspond to nonlinear resonance which is a well known phenomenon in industrial implementation of the vibrating screen. The justification is performed over nonsmooth analog of the second Bogolyubov's theorem proposed by the author in his previous papers. In this paper the statement of the second Bogolyubov's theorem on periodic solutions of smooth systems with small parameter is justified for discountinuous systems. It is assumed that the generating solution intersects the discontinuity hyperplanes transversally and that the system is smooth outside of these hyperplanes. Such a situation is natural for mechanical systems with dry friction and without constraints and sticking of oscillations. Let $y=f(x)$ be a continuously differentiable implicit function solving the equation $F(x,y)=0$ with continuously differentiable $F.$ In this paper we show that if $F_\eps$ is a Lipschitz function such that the Lipschitz constant of $F_\eps-F$ goes to 0 as $\eps\to 0$ then the equation $F_\eps(x,y)=0$ has a Lipschitz solution $y=f_\eps(x)$ such that the Lipschitz constant of $f_\eps-f$ goes to 0 as $\eps\to 0$ either. As an application we evaluate the length of time intervals where the right hand parts of some nonautonomous discontinuous systems of ODEs are continuously differentiable with respect to state variables. A topological degree based averaging principle has been proposed by J. Mawhin in his PhD thesis [J. Mawhin, Le Probleme des Solutions Periodiques en Mecanique non Lineaire, These de doctorat en sciences, Universite de Liege, 1969]. In his thesis the author gives analogous topological degree versions of classical bifurcation results due to I.G. Malkin and V.K. Melnikov, namely the conditions for bifurcation of periodic solutions from families are expressed in term of the topological degree of the bifurcation function. Moreover, the topological index of bifurcated periodic solutions is evaluated over that degree. A third part of the thesis is devoted to the rate the bifurcated periodic solutions converge when the perturbation vanishes. Let $P_e\in C^0(R^n,R^n)$ be the Poincare-Andronov operator over period $T>0$ of the $T$-periodically perturbed autonomous system $x'=f(x)+e g(t,x,e),$ where $e>0$ is small. Assuming that for $e=0$ this system has a $T$-periodic limit cycle $x_0$ we evaluate the topological degree $d(I-P_e,U)$ of $I-P_e$ on an open bounded set $U$ whose boundary contains $x_0([0,T])$ and does not contain other fixed points of $P_0.$ We give an explicit formula connecting $d(I-P_e,U)$ with topological indexes of zeros of the associated Malkin's bifurcation function. The goal of the paper is to prove Mawhin's conjecture which claims that $d(I-P_e,U)$ can be any integer in spite of the fact that the measure of the set of fixed points of $P_0$ on $\partial U$ is zero.

In this paper we consider a class of nonlinear periodic differential systems perturbed by two nonlinear periodic terms with multiplicative different powers of a small parameter $e>0$. For such a class of systems we provide conditions which guarantee the existence of periodic solutions of given period $T>0$. These conditions are expressed in terms of the behaviour on the boundary of an open bounded set $U$ of $R^n$ of the solutions of suitably defined linearized systems. The approach is based on the classical theory of the topological degree for compact vector fields. An application to the existence of periodic solutions to the van der Pol equation is also presented.

In this paper we provide conditions to ensure the existence, for $e>0$ sufficiently small, of periodic solutions of given period $T>0$ in a prescribed domain $U$ for a class of singularly perturbed first order differential systems. Here $e>0$ is the perturbation parameter. Our approach, based on the topological degree theory and the averaging theory, permits to weaken the conditions in [K.R. Schneider, Vibrational control of singularly perturbed systems, in "Lectures Notes in Control and Information Science", 259, 397-408, Springer, London, 2001, Theorem 2] under which the existence of periodic solutions is proved.

Let A:D(A)\to E be an infinitesimal generator either of an analytic compact semigroup or of a contractive C_0-semigroup of linear operators acting in a Banach space E. In this paper we give both necessary and sufficient conditions for bifurcation of $T$-periodic solutions for the equation x'=Ax+f(t,x)+e g(t,x,e) from a k-parameterized family of T-periodic solutions of the unperturbed equation corresponding to e=0. We show that by means of a suitable modification of the classical Mel'nikov approach we can construct a bifurcation function and to formulate the conditions for the existence of bifurcation in terms of the topological index of the bifurcation function. Aim of this paper is to investigate the existence of periodic solutions of a nonlinear planar autonomous system having a limit cycle x_0 of least period T_0>0 when it is perturbed by a small parameter, T_1-periodic, perturbation. In the case when T_0/T_1 is a rational number l/k, with l, k prime numbers, we provide conditions to guarantee, for the parameter perturbation e>0 sufficiently small, the existence of klT_0-periodic solutions x_e of the perturbed system which converge to the trajectory x_1 of the limit cycle as e->0. Moreover, we state conditions under which T=klT_0 is the least period of the periodic solutions x_e. We also suggest a simple criterion which ensures that these conditions are verified. Finally, in the case when T_0/T_1 is an irrational number we show the nonexistence, whenever T>0 and e>0, of T-periodic solutions x_e of the perturbed system converging to x_1. In this paper we study the existence, uniqueness and asymptotic stability of the periodic solutions for a Lipschitz system with a small right hand side. Classical hypotheses in the periodic case of second Bogolyubov's theorem imply our ones. By means of the results established we construct the curves of dependence of the amplitude of asymptotically stable $2\pi$--periodic solutions of the nonsmooth van der Pol oscillator on the detuning parameter and the amplitude of the perturbation. After, we compare the resonance curves obtained, with the resonance curves of the classical van der Pol oscillator which were first constructed by Andronov and Witt., Comment: Submitted to SIAM J. In this paper we consider a class of planar autonomous systems having an isolated limit cycle x_0 of smallest period T>0 such that the associated linearized system around it has only one characteristic multiplier with absolute value 1. We consider two functions, defined by means of the eigenfunctions of the adjoint of the linearized system, and we formulate conditions in terms of them in order to have the existence of two geometrically distinct families of T-periodic solutions of the autonomous system when it is perturbed by nonsmooth T-periodic nonlinear terms of small amplitude. We also show the convergence of these periodic solutions to x_0 as the perturbation disappears and we provide an estimation of the rate of convergence.
