We study how the choice of input data affects simulations of positive streamers in humid air, focusing on H2O cross sections, photoionization models, and chemistry sets. Simulations are performed in air with a mole fraction of 0%, 3% or 10% H2O using an axisymmetric fluid model. Five H2O cross section sets are considered, which lead to significant differences in the resulting electron attachment coefficient. As a result, the streamer velocity can vary by up to about 50% with 10% H2O. We compare results with three photoionization models: the Naidis model for humid air, the Aints model for humid air, and the standard Zheleznyak model for dry air. With the Naidis and in particular the Aints model, there is a significant reduction in photoionization with higher humidities. This results in higher streamer velocities and maximal electric fields, and it can also cause streamer branching in our axisymmetric simulations. Three humid air chemistry sets are considered. Differences between these sets, particularly in the formation of water clusters around positive ions, cause the streamer velocity to vary by up to about 50% with 10% H2O. A sensitivity analysis is performed to identify the most important chemical reactions in these chemistries.

One way to understand planet formation is through studying the correlations between planet occurrence rates and stellar mass. However, measuring stellar mass in the red giant regime is very difficult. In particular, the spectroscopic masses of certain evolved stars, often referred to as "retired A-stars", have been questioned in the literature. Efforts to resolve this mass controversy using spectroscopy, interferometry and asteroseismology have so far been inconclusive. A recent ensemble study found a mass-dependent mass offset, but the result was based on only 16 stars. With NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), we expand the investigation of the mass discrepancy to a total of 92 low-luminosity stars, synonymous with the retired A-stars. We measure their characteristic oscillation frequency, $\mathrm{\nu}_{\mathrm{max}}$, and the large frequency separation, $\mathrm{\Delta\nu}$, from their TESS photometric time series. Using these measurements and asteroseismic scaling relations, we derive asteroseismic masses and compare them with spectroscopic masses from five surveys, to comprehensively study the alleged mass-dependent mass offset. We find a mass offset between spectroscopy and seismology that increases with stellar mass. However, we note that adopting the seismic mass scale does not have a significant effect on the planet occurrence-mass-metallicity correlation for the so-called retired A-stars. Adapting pre-trained large language models to different domains in natural language processing requires two key considerations: high computational demands and model's inability to continual adaptation. To simultaneously address both issues, this paper presents COPAL (COntinual Pruning in Adaptive Language settings), an algorithm developed for pruning large language generative models under a continual model adaptation setting. While avoiding resource-heavy finetuning or retraining, our pruning process is guided by the proposed sensitivity analysis. The sensitivity effectively measures model's ability to withstand perturbations introduced by the new dataset and finds model's weights that are relevant for all encountered datasets. As a result, COPAL allows seamless model adaptation to new domains while enhancing the resource efficiency. Our empirical evaluation on a various size of LLMs show that COPAL outperforms baseline models, demonstrating its efficacy in efficiency and adaptability., Comment: ICML2024

We study radio emissions from positive streamers in air using 3D simulations, from which the radiated electric field is computed by solving Jefimenko's equations. The simulations are performed at 0.5 bar using two photoionization methods: the Helmholtz approximation for a photon density and a Monte Carlo method using discrete photons, with the latter being the most realistic. We consider cases with single streamers, streamer branching, streamers interacting with preionization and streamer-streamer encounters. We do not observe a strong VHF radio signal during or after branching, which is confirmed by lab experiments. This indicates that the current inside a streamer discharges evolves approximately continuously during branching. On the other hand, stochastic fluctuations in streamer propagation due to Monte Carlo photoionization lead to more radio emission being emitted at frequencies of 100 MHz and above. Another process that leads to such high-frequency emission is the interaction of a streamer with a weakly preionized region, which can be present due to a previous discharge. In agreement with previous work, we observe the strongest and highest-frequency emission from streamer encounters. The amount of total energy that is radiated seems to depend primarily on the background electric field, and less on the particular streamer evolution. Finally, we present approximations for the maximal current along a streamer channel and a fit formula for a streamer's current moment.

Hallucinations and delusions are often grouped together within the positive symptoms of psychosis. However, recent evidence suggests they may be driven by distinct computational and neural mechanisms. Examining the time course of their emergence may provide insights into the relationship between these underlying mechanisms. Participants from the second (N = 719) and third (N = 699) iterations of the North American Prodrome Longitudinal Study (NAPLS 2 and 3) were assessed for timing of CHR-P-level delusion and hallucination onset. Pre-onset symptom patterns in first-episode psychosis patients (FEP) from the Prevention and Early Intervention Program for Psychosis (PEPP-Montreal; N = 694) were also assessed. Symptom onset was determined at baseline assessment and the evolution of symptom patterns examined over 24 months. In all three samples, participants were more likely to report the onset of delusion-spectrum symptoms prior to hallucination-spectrum symptoms (odds ratios (OR): NAPLS 2 = 4.09; NAPLS 3 = 4.14; PEPP, Z = 7.01, P < 0.001) and to present with only delusions compared to only hallucinations (OR: NAPLS 2 = 5.6; NAPLS 3 = 11.11; PEPP = 42.75). Re-emergence of delusions after remission was also more common than re-emergence of hallucinations (Ps < 0.05), and hallucinations more often resolved first (Ps < 0.001). In both CHR-P samples, ratings of delusional ideation fell with the onset of hallucinations (P = 0.007). Delusions tend to emerge before hallucinations and may play a role in their development. Further work should examine the relationship between the mechanisms driving these symptoms and its utility for diagnosis and treatment.

In recent quantum algorithmic developments, a feedback-based approach has shown promise for preparing quantum many-body system ground states and solving combinatorial optimization problems. This method utilizes quantum Lyapunov control to iteratively construct quantum circuits. Here, we propose a substantial enhancement by implementing a protocol that uses ideas from quantum Lyapunov control and the counterdiabatic driving protocol, a key concept from quantum adiabaticity. Our approach introduces an additional control field inspired by counterdiabatic driving. We apply our algorithm to prepare ground states in one-dimensional quantum Ising spin chains. Comprehensive simulations demonstrate a remarkable acceleration in population transfer to low-energy states within a significantly reduced time frame compared to conventional feedback-based quantum algorithms. This acceleration translates to a reduced quantum circuit depth, a critical metric for potential quantum computer implementation. In recent years, tasks of machine learning ranging from image processing & audio/video analysis to natural language understanding have been transformed by deep learning. The data content in all these scenarios are expressed via Euclidean space. However, a considerable amount of application data is structured in non-Euclidean space and is expressed as graphs, e.g. dealing with complicated interactions & object interdependencies. Modelling physical systems, learning molecular signatures, identifying protein interactions and predicting diseases involve utilising a model that can adapt from graph data. Graph neural networks (GNNs), specified as artificial-neural models, employ message transmission between graph nodes to represent graph dependencies and are primarily used in the non-Euclidean domain. Variants of GNN like Graph Recurrent Networks (GRN), Graph Auto Encoder (GAE), Graph Convolution Networks (GCN), Graph Adversarial Methods & Graph Reinforcement learning have exhibited breakthrough productivity on a wide range of tasks, especially in the field of bioinformatics, in recent years as a result of the rapid collection of biological network data. Apart from presenting all existing GNN models, mathematical analysis and comparison of the variants of all types of GNN have been highlighted in this survey. Graph neural networks are investigated for their potential real-world applications in various fields, focusing on Bioinformatics. Furthermore, resources for evaluating graph neural network models and accessing open-source code & benchmark data sets are included. Ultimately, we provide some (seven) proposals for future research in this rapidly evolving domain. We present a protocol for detecting multipartite entanglement in itinerant many-body electronic systems using single particle Green's functions. To achieve this, we first establish a connection between the quantum Fisher information (QFI) and single particle Green's functions by constructing a set of witness operators built out of single electron creation and destruction operators in a doubled system. This set of witness operators is indexed by a momenta $k$. We compute the QFI for these witness operators and show that for thermal ensembles it can be expressed as an auto-convolution of the single particle spectral function. We then apply our framework to a one-dimensional fermionic system to showcase its effectiveness in detecting entanglement in itinerant electron models. We observe that the detected entanglement level is sensitive to the wave vector associated with witness operator. Our protocol will permit detecting entanglement in many-body systems using scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, two spectroscopies that measure the single particle Green's function. It offers the prospect of the experimental detection of entanglement through spectroscopies beyond the established route of measuring the dynamical spin response., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Photodetectors that are sensitive in shortwave infrared (SWIR) range (1 um - 2 um) are of significant interest for applications in 3D, night and adverse weather imaging, machine vision and autonomous driving, among others. Currently available technologies in the SWIR rely on costly epitaxial semiconductors that are not monolithically integrated with CMOS electronics. Solution-processed quantum dots can address this challenge by enabling low-cost manufacturing and simple monolithic integration on silicon in a back-end-of-line (BEOL) process. To date, colloidal quantum dot (CQD) materials to access the SWIR are mostly based on lead sulfide (PbS) and mercury telluride (HgTe) compounds, imposing major regulatory concerns and impeding their deployment in consumer electronics due to toxicity concerns. Here we report a new synthesis method for environmentally-friendly silver telluride (Ag2Te) quantum dots and their application in high-performance SWIR photodetectors. The CQD photodetector stack employs materials compliant with the Restriction of Hazardous Substance (RoHS) directives and is sensitive in the spectral range from 350 nm - 1600 nm. The room-temperature detectivity is of the order 1012 Jones, the 3dB bandwidth is in excess of 0.1 MHz and the linear dynamic range is over 118 dB. We also realize a monolithically integrated SWIR imager based on solution processed, heavy-metal-free materials, thus paving the way of this technology to consumer electronics market.

Multinational corporations routinely track how its employees use their computers, the internet, or email. There are roughly a thousand devices on the market that enable businesses to monitor their workforce. Observe what their users do online, in their emails, and on their so-called personal laptops while at work. Our team will develop a key-logger for this Journal project that will allow us to capture every keystroke. Additionally, it will enable us to capture the mouse movements and clicks. This will enable us to keep an eye on how a person uses the internet and every other application on his or her "own" computer. Keyloggers, on the other hand, can also be used to steal data in the form of malware or something comparable. An anti-key logger will also be created to address this issue, allowing us to determine whether a key logger is already monitoring the system. Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We develop a framework to solve a large class of linearly driven non-Hermitian quantum systems. Such a class of models in the Hermitian scenario is commonly known as multi-state Landau-Zener models. The non-hermiticity is due to the anti-Hermitian couplings between the diabatic levels. We find that there exists a new conservation law, unique to this class of models, that describes the simultaneous growth of the unnormalized wavefunctions. These models have practical applications in Bose-Einstein condensates, and they can describe the dynamics of multi-species bosonic systems. The conservation law relates to a pair-production mechanism that explains the dissociation of diatomic molecules into atoms. We provide a general framework for both solvable and semiclassically solvable non-Hermitian Landau-Zener models. Our findings will open new avenues for a number of diverse emergent phenomena in explicitly time-dependent non-Hermitian quantum systems.

Point cloud data plays an essential role in robotics and self-driving applications. Yet, annotating point cloud data is time-consuming and nontrivial while they enable learning discriminative 3D representations that empower downstream tasks, such as classification and segmentation. Recently, contrastive learning-based frameworks have shown promising results for learning 3D representations in a self-supervised manner. However, existing contrastive learning methods cannot precisely encode and associate structural features and search the higher dimensional augmentation space efficiently. In this paper, we present CLR-GAM, a novel contrastive learning-based framework with Guided Augmentation (GA) for efficient dynamic exploration strategy and Guided Feature Mapping (GFM) for similar structural feature association between augmented point clouds. We empirically demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves state-of-the-art performance on both simulated and real-world 3D point cloud datasets for three different downstream tasks, i.e., 3D point cloud classification, few-shot learning, and object part segmentation.

In this paper, we study how streamer discharges are influenced by a previous voltage pulse using an axisymmetric fluid model. We simulate double-pulse positive streamers in N2-O2 mixtures containing 20% and 10% O2 at 1 bar. By varying the time between the pulses between 5 ns and 10 microseconds, we observe three regimes during the second pulse: streamer continuation, inhibited growth and streamer repetition. In the streamer continuation regime, a new streamer emerges from the tip of the previous one. In the inhibited regime, the previous channel is partially re-ionized, but there is considerably less field enhancement and almost no light emission. Finally, for the longest interpulse times, a new streamer forms that is similar to the first one. The remaining electron densities at which we observe streamer continuation agree with earlier experimental work. We introduce an estimate which relates streamer continuation to the dielectric relaxation time, the background field and the pulse duration. Furthermore, we show that for interpulse times above 100 ns several electron detachment reactions significantly slow down the decay of the electron density.

By transferring knowledge from large, diverse, task-agnostic datasets, modern machine learning models can solve specific downstream tasks either zero-shot or with small task-specific datasets to a high level of performance. While this capability has been demonstrated in other fields such as computer vision, natural language processing or speech recognition, it remains to be shown in robotics, where the generalization capabilities of the models are particularly critical due to the difficulty of collecting real-world robotic data. We argue that one of the keys to the success of such general robotic models lies with open-ended task-agnostic training, combined with high-capacity architectures that can absorb all of the diverse, robotic data. In this paper, we present a model class, dubbed Robotics Transformer, that exhibits promising scalable model properties. We verify our conclusions in a study of different model classes and their ability to generalize as a function of the data size, model size, and data diversity based on a large-scale data collection on real robots performing real-world tasks. The Indian agricultural sector being in a constant phase of upgradation, has been on the road to modernization for the last couple of years. The fundamental source of livelihood for over 70 percent of the population living in rural parts of the country is still agriculture. The average Indian farmer, although has access to raw and trend data pertaining to crop prices, yield and demand from Indian government and private websites, still struggles to make the right choices. They are constantly faced with the dilemma of choosing the right crop to address market demand and fetch them a decent profit. Since the process of shortlisting crops amongst the many suitable ones isn't completely scientific and usually dictated by area tradition, this project has aimed to address that issue by forecasting the price of those crops and uses that to create an optimal portfolio that the farmers can obtain to arrive at a data-driven decision for crop selection with optimal estimated ROI., Comment: 14 pages

Considering the functionality of situational awareness in safety-critical automation systems, the perception of risk in driving scenes and its explainability is of particular importance for autonomous and cooperative driving. Toward this goal, this paper proposes a new research direction of joint risk localization in driving scenes and its risk explanation as a natural language description. Due to the lack of standard benchmarks, we collected a large-scale dataset, DRAMA (Driving Risk Assessment Mechanism with A captioning module), which consists of 17,785 interactive driving scenarios collected in Tokyo, Japan. Our DRAMA dataset accommodates video- and object-level questions on driving risks with associated important objects to achieve the goal of visual captioning as a free-form language description utilizing closed and open-ended responses for multi-level questions, which can be used to evaluate a range of visual captioning capabilities in driving scenarios. We make this data available to the community for further research. Using DRAMA, we explore multiple facets of joint risk localization and captioning in interactive driving scenarios. In particular, we benchmark various multi-task prediction architectures and provide a detailed analysis of joint risk localization and risk captioning. We develop the theoretical framework of nonequilibrium ultrafast photonics in monolayer quantum spin-Hall insulators supporting a multitude of topological states. In these materials, ubiquitous strong light-matter interactions in the femtosecond scale lead to non-adiabatic quantum dynamics, resulting in topology-dependent nonlinear optoelectronic transport phenomena. We investigate the mechanism driving topological Dirac fermions interacting with strong ultrashort light pulses and uncover various experimentally accessible physical quantities that encode fingerprints of the quantum material's topological electronic state from the high harmonic generated spectrum. Our work sets the theoretical cornerstones to realize the full potential of time-resolved harmonic spectroscopy for identifying topological invariants in two-dimensional quantum spin-Hall solid state systems., Comment: 4 figures

Amongst the derivatives of 4-biphenylcarboxylic acid and amino acid esters, the crystal structure of 4-biphenylcarboxy-(L)-phenylalaninate is unusual owing to its monoclinic symmetry within a pseudo-orthorhombic lattice. The distortion is described by disparate rotational property around the chiral centers ($\varphi_{\mathrm{chiral}}$ $\simeq$ -129 degrees and 58 degrees) of the two molecules in the asymmetric unit. Each of these molecules comprise of planar biphenyl moieties ($\varphi_{\mathrm{biphenyl}}$ = 0 degrees). Using temperature dependent single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments we show that the compound undergoes a phase transition below $T$ $\sim$ 124 K that is characterized by a commensurate modulation wave vector, $\mathbf{q}$ = $\delta(101)$, $\delta$ = $\frac{1}{2}$. The (3+1) dimensional modulated structure at $T$ = 100 K suggests that the phase transition drives the biphenyl moieties towards non coplanar conformations with significant variation of internal torsion ($\varphi^{\mathrm{max}}_{\mathrm{biphenyl}}$ $\leq$ $20$ degrees). These intramolecular rotations lead to dimerization of the molecular stacks that are described predominantly by intermolecular tilts and small variations in intermolecular distances. Atypical of modulated structures and superstructures of biphenyl and other polyphenyls, the rotations of individual molecules are asymmetric ($\Delta$$\varphi_{\mathrm{biphenyl}}$ $\approx$ 5 degrees) while $\varphi_{\mathrm{biphenyl}}$ of one independent molecule is two to four times larger than the other. Crystal-chemical analysis and phase relations in superspace suggest multiple competing factors involving intramolecular steric factors, intermolecular H--C${\cdot}{\cdot}{\cdot}$C--H contacts and weak C--H${\cdot}{\cdot}{\cdot}$O hydrogen bonds that govern the distinctively unequal torsional property of the molecules.

This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. Here we report the detection of polarization variations due to nonradial modes in the beta Cephei star beta Crucis. In so doing we confirm 40-year-old predictions of pulsation-induced polarization variability and its utility in asteroseismology for mode identification. In an approach suited to other beta Cep stars, we combine polarimetry with space-based photometry and archival spectroscopy to identify the dominant nonradial mode in polarimetry, f2, as l = 3, m = -3 (in the m-convention of Dziembowski) and determine the stellar axis position angle as 25 (or 205) +/- 8 deg. The rotation axis inclination to the line of sight was derived as approx. 46 deg. from combined polarimetry and spectroscopy, facilitating identification of additional modes and allowing for asteroseismic modelling. This reveals a star of 14.5 +/- 0.5 Solar masses and a convective core containing approx. 28% of its mass -- making beta Crucis the most massive star with an asteroseismic age., Comment: 33 pages, 11 figures, 8 tables (incl. For a Landau-Zener transition in a two-level system, the probability for a particle, initially in the first level, {\em i}, to survive the transition and to remain in the first level, depends exponentially on the square of the tunnel matrix element between the two levels. This result remains valid when the second level, {\em f}, is broadened due to e.g. coupling to continuum [V. M. Akulin and W. P. Schleicht, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 46}, 4110 (1992)]. If the level, {\em i}, is also coupled to continuum, albeit much weaker than the level {\em f}, a particle, upon surviving the transition, will eventually escape. However, for shorter times, the probability to find the particle in the level {\em i} after crossing {\em f} is {\em enhanced} due to the coupling to continuum. This, as shown in the present paper, is the result of a second-order process, which is an {\em additional coupling between the levels}. For a Landau-Zener transition in a two-level system, the probability for a particle, initially in the first level, to survive the transition and to remain in the first level, does not depend on whether or not the second level is broadened [V. M. Akulin and W. P. Schleicht, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 46}, 4110 (1992)]. In other words, the seminal Landau-Zener result applies regardless of the broadening of the second level. The same question for the multistate Landau-Zener transition is addressed in the present paper. While for integrable multistate models, where the transition does not involve interference of the virtual paths, it can be argued that the independence of the broadening persists, we focus on non-integrable models involving interference. The discovery of novel inhibitor molecules for emerging drug-target proteins is widely acknowledged as a challenging inverse design problem: Exhaustive exploration of the vast chemical search space is impractical, especially when the target structure or active molecules are unknown. Here we validate experimentally the broad utility of a deep generative framework trained at-scale on protein sequences, small molecules, and their mutual interactions -- that is unbiased toward any specific target. As demonstrators, we consider two dissimilar and relevant SARS-CoV-2 targets: the main protease and the spike protein (receptor binding domain, RBD). To perform target-aware design of novel inhibitor molecules, a protein sequence-conditioned sampling on the generative foundation model is performed. Despite using only the target sequence information, and without performing any target-specific adaptation of the generative model, micromolar-level inhibition was observed in in vitro experiments for two candidates out of only four synthesized for each target. The most potent spike RBD inhibitor also exhibited activity against several variants in live virus neutralization assays. These results therefore establish that a single, broadly deployable generative foundation model for accelerated hit discovery is effective and efficient, even in the most general case where neither target structure nor binder information is available., Comment: Revised title, abstract, and text; additional figures

Bidirectional quantum teleportation is a fundamental protocol for exchanging quantum information between two quantum nodes. All bidirectional quantum teleportation protocols till now have achieved a maximum efficiency of $40\%$. Here, we propose a new scheme for symmetric bidirectional quantum teleportation using a six-qubit cluster state as the quantum channel, for symmetric ($3\leftrightarrow3$) qubit bidirectional quantum teleportation of a special three-qubit entangled state. The novelty of our scheme lies in its generalization for ($N\leftrightarrow N$) qubit bidirectional quantum teleportation employing a $2N$-qubit cluster state. The efficiency of the proposed protocol is remarkably increased to $50\%$ which is highest till now. We provide a framework to solve generic models describing the dissociation of multiple molecular Bose-Einstein condensates in a nonadiabatic regime. The competition between individual chemical reactions can lead to non-trivial dependence on critical components such as path interference and symmetries, thus, affecting the final distribution of atomic population. We find an analytical solution for an illustrative example model involving four atomic modes. When the system parameters satisfy $CPT$ symmetry, where $C$ is charge conjugation, $P$ is parity, and $T$ is time-reversal symmetry, our solution predicts a population imbalance between atomic modes that is exponentially sensitive to system parameters. However, a weakly broken symmetry alters the population in each atomic mode and can reverse the population imbalance. Our solution also demonstrates a strong quantum correlation between atomic modes that leads to the spontaneous production of atoms in a multi-mode squeezed state. We solve a model that describes a stimulated conversion between ultracold bosonic atoms and molecules. The reaction is triggered by a linearly time-dependent transition throughout the Feshbach resonance. Our solution predicts a nonexponential dependence, with a dynamic phase transition, of the reaction efficiency on the transition rate. We find that the emerging phase can have a thermalized energy distribution with the temperature defined by the rate of the transition. Recent advances in trajectory prediction have shown that explicit reasoning about agents' intent is important to accurately forecast their motion. However, the current research activities are not directly applicable to intelligent and safety critical systems. This is mainly because very few public datasets are available, and they only consider pedestrian-specific intents for a short temporal horizon from a restricted egocentric view. To this end, we propose LOKI (LOng term and Key Intentions), a novel large-scale dataset that is designed to tackle joint trajectory and intention prediction for heterogeneous traffic agents (pedestrians and vehicles) in an autonomous driving setting. The LOKI dataset is created to discover several factors that may affect intention, including i) agent's own will, ii) social interactions, iii) environmental constraints, and iv) contextual information. We also propose a model that jointly performs trajectory and intention prediction, showing that recurrently reasoning about intention can assist with trajectory prediction. The recent observations of nonlinear Hall effect in time-reversal symmetry protected systems and on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators due to an in-plane magnetic field have attracted immense experimental and theoretical investigations in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides and Weyl semimetals. The origin of this type of second order effect has been attributed to the emergence of a Berry curvature dipole, which requires a low-symmetry environment. Here, we propose a mechanism for generating such a second order nonlinear Hall effect in Kane-Mele two-dimensional topological insulators due to spatial and time reversal symmetry breaking in the presence of Zeeman and Rashba couplings. By actively tuning the energy gaps with external electromagnetic fields we also demonstrate that the nonlinear Hall effect shows remarkable signatures of topological phase transitions existing in the considered two-dimensional systems., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Motion forecasting plays a significant role in various domains (e.g., autonomous driving, human-robot interaction), which aims to predict future motion sequences given a set of historical observations. However, the observed elements may be of different levels of importance. Some information may be irrelevant or even distracting to the forecasting in certain situations. To address this issue, we propose a generic motion forecasting framework (named RAIN) with dynamic key information selection and ranking based on a hybrid attention mechanism. The general framework is instantiated to handle multi-agent trajectory prediction and human motion forecasting tasks, respectively. In the former task, the model learns to recognize the relations between agents with a graph representation and to determine their relative significance. In the latter task, the model learns to capture the temporal proximity and dependency in long-term human motions. We also propose an effective double-stage training pipeline with an alternating training strategy to optimize the parameters in different modules of the framework. The graphene family materials are two-dimensional staggered monolayers with a gapped energy band structure due to intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. The mass gaps in these materials can be manipulated on-demand via biasing with a static electric field, an off-resonance circularly polarized laser, or an exchange interaction field, allowing the monolayer to be driven through a multitude of topological phase transitions. We investigate the dynamics of spin-orbit coupled graphene family materials to unveil topological phase transition fingerprints embedded in the nonlinear regime and show how these signatures manifest in the nonlinear Kerr effect and in third-harmonic generation processes. We show that the resonant nonlinear spectral response of topological fermions can be traced to specific Dirac cones in these materials, enabling characterization of topological invariants in any phase by detecting the cross-polarized component of the electromagnetic field. By shedding light on the unique processes involved in harmonic generation via topological phenomena our findings open an encouraging path towards the development of novel nonlinear systems based on two-dimensional semiconductors of the graphene family., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Breast cancer is the most common invasive cancer in women, and the second main cause of death. Breast cancer screening is an efficient method to detect indeterminate breast lesions early. The common approaches of screening for women are tomosynthesis and mammography images. However, the traditional manual diagnosis requires an intense workload by pathologists, who are prone to diagnostic errors. Thus, the aim of this study is to build a deep convolutional neural network method for automatic detection, segmentation, and classification of breast lesions in mammography images. Based on deep learning the Mask-CNN (RoIAlign) method was developed to features selection and extraction; and the classification was carried out by DenseNet architecture. Finally, the precision and accuracy of the model is evaluated by cross validation matrix and AUC curve. We demonstrate that the general model of a linearly time-dependent crossing of two energy bands is integrable. Namely, the Hamiltonian of this model has a quadratically time-dependent commuting operator. We apply this property to four-state Landau-Zener (LZ) models that have previously been used to describe the Landau-St\"uckelberg interferometry experiments with an electron shuttling between two semiconductor quantum dots. The integrability then leads to simple but nontrivial exact relations for the transition probabilities. In addition, the integrability leads to a semiclassical theory that provides analytical approximation for the transition probabilities in these models for all parameter values. The results predict a dynamic phase transition, and show that similarly-looking models belong to different topological classes.

Predicting future trajectories of traffic agents in highly interactive environments is an essential and challenging problem for the safe operation of autonomous driving systems. On the basis of the fact that self-driving vehicles are equipped with various types of sensors (e.g., LiDAR scanner, RGB camera, radar, etc.), we propose a Cross-Modal Embedding framework that aims to benefit from the use of multiple input modalities. At training time, our model learns to embed a set of complementary features in a shared latent space by jointly optimizing the objective functions across different types of input data. At test time, a single input modality (e.g., LiDAR data) is required to generate predictions from the input perspective (i.e., in the LiDAR space), while taking advantages from the model trained with multiple sensor modalities. This paper considers the problem of multi-modal future trajectory forecast with ranking. Here, multi-modality and ranking refer to the multiple plausible path predictions and the confidence in those predictions, respectively. We propose Social-STAGE, Social interaction-aware Spatio-Temporal multi-Attention Graph convolution network with novel Evaluation for multi-modality. Our main contributions include analysis and formulation of multi-modality with ranking using interaction and multi-attention, and introduction of new metrics to evaluate the diversity and associated confidence of multi-modal predictions. We evaluate our approach on existing public datasets ETH and UCY and show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the state of the arts on these datasets., Comment: ICRA 2021

The study of planet occurrence as a function of stellar mass is important for a better understanding of planet formation. Estimating stellar mass, especially in the red giant regime, is difficult. In particular, stellar masses of a sample of evolved planet-hosting stars based on spectroscopy and grid-based modelling have been put to question over the past decade with claims they were overestimated. Although efforts have been made in the past to reconcile this dispute using asteroseismology, results were inconclusive. In an attempt to resolve this controversy, we study four more evolved planet-hosting stars in this paper using asteroseismology, and we revisit previous results to make an informed study of the whole ensemble in a self-consistent way. For the four new stars, we measure their masses by locating their characteristic oscillation frequency, $\mathrm{\nu}_{\mathrm{max}}$, from their radial velocity time series observed by SONG. For two stars, we are also able to measure the large frequency separation, $\mathrm{\Delta\nu}$, helped by extended SONG single-site and dual-site observations and new TESS observations. We establish the robustness of the $\mathrm{\nu}_{\mathrm{max}}$-only-based results by determining the stellar mass from $\mathrm{\Delta\nu}$, and from both $\mathrm{\Delta\nu}$ and $\mathrm{\nu}_{\mathrm{max}}$. We then compare the seismic masses of the full ensemble of 16 stars with the spectroscopic masses from three different literature sources. We find an offset between the seismic and spectroscopic mass scales that is mass-dependent, suggesting that the previously claimed overestimation of spectroscopic masses only affects stars more massive than about 1.6 M$_\mathrm{\odot}$., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in the Main Journal of MNRAS

We propose a robust solution to future trajectory forecast, which can be practically applicable to autonomous agents in highly crowded environments. For this, three aspects are particularly addressed in this paper. First, we use composite fields to predict future locations of all road agents in a single-shot, which results in a constant time complexity, regardless of the number of agents in the scene. Second, interactions between agents are modeled as a non-local response, enabling spatial relationships between different locations to be captured temporally as well (i.e., in spatio-temporal interactions). Third, the semantic context of the scene are modeled and take into account the environmental constraints that potentially influence the future motion. We consider the problem of predicting the future trajectory of scene agents from egocentric views obtained from a moving platform. This problem is important in a variety of domains, particularly for autonomous systems making reactive or strategic decisions in navigation. In an attempt to address this problem, we introduce TITAN (Trajectory Inference using Targeted Action priors Network), a new model that incorporates prior positions, actions, and context to forecast future trajectory of agents and future ego-motion. In the absence of an appropriate dataset for this task, we created the TITAN dataset that consists of 700 labeled video-clips (with odometry) captured from a moving vehicle on highly interactive urban traffic scenes in Tokyo. Our dataset includes 50 labels including vehicle states and actions, pedestrian age groups, and targeted pedestrian action attributes that are organized hierarchically corresponding to atomic, simple/complex-contextual, transportive, and communicative actions. To evaluate our model, we conducted extensive experiments on the TITAN dataset, revealing significant performance improvement against baselines and state-of-the-art algorithms. We also report promising results from our Agent Importance Mechanism (AIM), a module which provides insight into assessment of perceived risk by calculating the relative influence of each agent on the future ego-trajectory. The pattern and profile of a dried colloidal deposit formed after evaporation of a sessile water droplet containing polystyrene particles on a non-uniformly heated glass are investigated experimentally. In particular, the effects of temperature gradient across the substrate and particles size are investigated. The temperature gradient was imposed using Peltier coolers, and side visualization, infrared thermography, optical microscopy, and optical profilometry were employed to collect the data. On a uniformly heated substrate, a ring with an inner deposit is obtained, which is attributed to axisymmetric Marangoni recirculation and consistent with previous reports. However, the dimensions of the ring formed on a non-uniformly heated substrate are significantly different on the hot and cold side of the substrate and are found to be a function of the temperature gradient and particles size. In the case of smaller particle size, the contact line on hot side depins and together with twin asymmetric Marangoni recirculations, it results in a larger ring width on the cold side as compared to the hot side. In contrast, the contact line remains pinned in case of larger particles, and the twin asymmetric Marangoni recirculations advect more particles on the hot side, resulting in a larger ring width at the hot side. A mechanistic model is employed to explain why the depinning is dependent on the particle size. A larger temperature gradient significantly increases or decreases the ring width depending on the particle size, due to a stronger intensity recirculation. A regime map is proposed for the deposit patterns on temperature gradient-particle size plane to classify the deposits.

Predicting the future trajectory of agents from visual observations is an important problem for realization of safe and effective navigation of autonomous systems in dynamic environments. This paper focuses on two important aspects of future trajectory forecast which are particularly relevant for mobile platforms: 1) modeling uncertainty of the predictions, particularly from egocentric views, where uncertainty in the interactive reactions and behaviors of other agents must consider the uncertainty in the ego-motion, and 2) modeling multi-modality nature of the problem, which are particularly prevalent at junctions in urban traffic scenes. To address these problems in a unified approach, we propose NEMO (Noisy Ego MOtion priors for future object localization) for future forecast of agents in the egocentric view. In the proposed approach, a predictive distribution of future forecast is jointly modeled with the uncertainty of predictions. For this, we divide the problem into two tasks: future ego-motion prediction and future object localization. We first model the multi-modal distribution of future ego-motion with uncertainty estimates. The resulting distribution of ego-behavior is used to sample multiple modes of future ego-motion. Then, each modality is used as a prior to understand the interactions between the ego-vehicle and target agent. We predict the multi-modal future locations of the target from individual modes of the ego-vehicle while modeling the uncertainty of the target's behavior. To this end, we extensively evaluate the proposed framework using the publicly available benchmark dataset (HEV-I) supplemented with odometry data from an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU).

We propose a Deep RObust Goal-Oriented trajectory prediction Network (DROGON) for accurate vehicle trajectory prediction by considering behavioral intentions of vehicles in traffic scenes. Our main insight is that the behavior (i.e., motion) of drivers can be reasoned from their high level possible goals (i.e., intention) on the road. To succeed in such behavior reasoning, we build a conditional prediction model to forecast goal-oriented trajectories with the following stages: (i) relational inference where we encode relational interactions of vehicles using the perceptual context; (ii) intention estimation to compute the probability distributions of intentional goals based on the inferred relations; and (iii) behavior reasoning where we reason about the behaviors of vehicles as trajectories conditioned on the intentions. The autoencoder is one of machine learning algorithms used for feature extraction by dimension reduction of input data, denoising of images, and prior learning of neural networks. At the same time, autoencoders using quantum computers are also being developed. However, current quantum computers have a limited number of qubits, which makes it difficult to calculate big data. In this paper, as a solution to this problem, we propose a computation method that applies a convolution filter, which is one of the methods used in machine learning, to quantum computation. As a result of applying this method to a quantum autoencoder, we succeeded in denoising image data of several hundred qubits or more using only a few qubits under the autoencoding accuracy of 98%, and the effectiveness of this method was obtained. Meanwhile, we have verified the feature extraction function of the proposed autoencoder by dimensionality reduction. By projecting the MNIST data to two-dimension, we found the proposed method showed superior classification accuracy to the vanilla principle component analysis (PCA). We also verified the proposed method using IBM Q Melbourne and the actual machine failed to provide accurate results implying high error rate prevailing in the current NISQ quantum computer., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

We experimentally investigate the profile and morphology of the ring-like deposits obtained after evaporation of a sessile water droplet containing polystyrene colloidal particles on a hydrophilic glass substrate. In particular, the coupled effect of particle size and concentration are studied. The deposits were qualitatively visualized under an optical microscope and profile of the ring was measured by an optical profilometer. The profile of the ring resembles a partial torus-like shape for all cases of particles size and concentration. The cracks on the surface of the ring were found to occur only at smaller particle size and larger concentration. We plot a regime map to classify three deposit types - discontinuous monolayer ring, continuous monolayer ring, and multiple layers ring - on particles concentration - particle size plane. Our data shows a possible existence of a critical concentration (particle size) for a given particle size (concentration) at which the monolayer ring forms. For the larger particle sizes, the immersion capillary forces between the particles dominate, aiding the formation of a monolayer ring of the particles. The relative mass of the particles accumulated in the ring is lesser in cases of the monolayer ring. We measure the width and height of the ring and show that they scale with particle concentration by a power law for the multiple layers ring. This scaling corroborates with an existing continuum based theoretical model. We briefly discuss the effect of the interaction of growing deposit with shrinking free surface on the ring dimensions and profile. The present results aid understanding of the ring formation process and will be useful in guiding the design of self-assemblies of the colloidal particles formed by the evaporating droplets.

In the presence of spin-orbit coupling two branches of the energy spectrum of 2D electrons get shifted in the momentum space. Application of in-plane magnetic field causes the splitting of the branches in energy. When both, spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting are present, the branches of energy spectrum cross at certain energy. Near this energy, the Landau quantization becomes peculiar since semiclassical trajectories, corresponding to individual branches, get coupled. We study this coupling as a function of proximity to the topological transition. Remarkably, the dependence on the proximity is strongly asymmetric reflecting the specifics of the behavior of the trajectories near the crossing. Equally remarkable, on one side of the transition, the magnitude of coupling is an oscillating function of this proximity. These oscillations can be interpreted in terms of the St{\"u}ckelberg interference. Scaling of characteristic detuning with magnetic length is also unusual. 3D multi-object detection and tracking are crucial for traffic scene understanding. However, the community pays less attention to these areas due to the lack of a standardized benchmark dataset to advance the field. Moreover, existing datasets (e.g., KITTI) do not provide sufficient data and labels to tackle challenging scenes where highly interactive and occluded traffic participants are present. To address the issues, we present the Honda Research Institute 3D Dataset (H3D), a large-scale full-surround 3D multi-object detection and tracking dataset collected using a 3D LiDAR scanner. H3D comprises of 160 crowded and highly interactive traffic scenes with a total of 1 million labeled instances in 27,721 frames. With unique dataset size, rich annotations, and complex scenes, H3D is gathered to stimulate research on full-surround 3D multi-object detection and tracking. To effectively and efficiently annotate a large-scale 3D point cloud dataset, we propose a labeling methodology to speed up the overall annotation cycle. A standardized benchmark is created to evaluate full-surround 3D multi-object detection and tracking algorithms. 3D object detection and tracking algorithms are trained and tested on H3D. In conventional solid-state electron systems with localized states the ac absorption is linear since the inelastic widths of the energy levels exceeds the drive amplitude. The situation is different in the systems of cold atoms in which phonons are absent. Then even a weak drive leads to saturation of the ac absorption within resonant pairs, so that the population of levels oscillates with the Rabi frequency. We demonstrate that, in the presence of weak dipole-dipole interactions, the response of the system acquires a long-time component which oscillates with frequency much smaller than the Rabi frequency. The underlying mechanism of this long-time behavior is that the fields created in the course of the Rabi oscillations serve as resonant drive for the second-generation Rabi oscillations in pairs with level spacings close to the Rabi frequency. The frequency of the second-generation oscillations is of the order of interaction strength. As these oscillations develop, they can initiate the next-generation Rabi oscillations, and so on. Non-diagonal (bond) disorder in graphene broadens Landau levels (LLs) in the same way as random potential. The exception is the zeroth LL, $n=0$, which is robust to the bond disorder, since it does not mix different $n=0$ states within a given valley. The mechanism of broadening of the $n=0$ LL is the inter-valley scattering. Several numerical simulations of graphene with bond disorder had established that $n=0$ LL is not only anomalously narrow but also that its shape is very peculiar with three maxima, one at zero energy, $E=0$, and two others at finite energies $\pm E$. We study theoretically the structure of the states in $n=0$ LL in the presence of bond disorder. Adopting the assumption that the bond disorder is strongly anisotropic, namely, that one type of bonds is perturbed much stronger than other two, allowed us to get an analytic expression for the density of states which agrees with numerical simulations remarkably well. On the qualitative level, our key finding is that delocalization of $E=0$ state has a dramatic back effect on the density of states near $E=0$. We consider a single-layer graphene with high ripples, so that the pseudo-magnetic fields due to these ripples are strong. If the magnetic length corresponding to a typical pseudo-magnetic field is smaller than the ripple size, the resulting Landau levels are local. Then the effective properties of the macroscopic sample can be calculated by averaging the local properties over the distribution of ripples. We find that this averaging does not wash out the Landau quantization completely. Average density of states (DOS) contains a feature (inflection point) at energy corresponding to the first Landau level in a {\em typical} field. Moreover, the frequency dependence of the ac conductivity %while the average ac conductivity contains a maximum at a frequency corresponding to the first Landau level in a typical field. This nontrivial behavior of the effective characteristics of randomly strained graphene is a consequence of non-equidistance of the Landau levels in the Dirac spectrum., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

In this paper, we presented a preliminary study for tactical driver behavior detection from untrimmed naturalistic driving recordings. While supervised learning based detection is a common approach, it suffers when labeled data is scarce. Manual annotation is both time-consuming and expensive. To emphasize this problem, we experimented on a 104-hour real-world naturalistic driving dataset with a set of predefined driving behaviors annotated. There are three challenges in the dataset. First, predefined driving behaviors are sparse in a naturalistic driving setting. Second, the distribution of driving behaviors is long-tail. Third, a huge intra-class variation is observed. To address these issues, recent self-supervised and supervised learning and fusion of multimodal cues are leveraged into our architecture design. Preliminary experiments and discussions are reported.
