General Effect Modelling (GEM) is an umbrella over different methods that utilise effects in the analyses of data with multiple design variables and multivariate responses. To demonstrate the methodology, we here use GEM in gene expression data where we use GEM to combine data from different cohorts and apply multivariate analysis of the effects of the targeted disease across the cohorts. Omics data are by nature multivariate, yet univariate analysis is the dominating approach used for such data. A major challenge in omics data is that the number of features such as genes, proteins and metabolites are often very large, whereas the number of samples is limited. Furthermore, omics research aims to obtain results that are generically valid across different backgrounds. The present publication applies GEM to address these aspects. First, we emphasise the benefit of multivariate analysis for multivariate data. Then we illustrate the use of GEM to combine data from two different cohorts for multivariate analysis across the cohorts, and we highlight that multivariate analysis can detect information that is lost by univariate validation., Comment: 12 pages

This paper develops a formal framework to assess policies of learning algorithms in economic games. We investigate whether reinforcement-learning agents with collusive pricing policies can successfully extrapolate collusive behavior from training to the market. We find that in testing environments collusion consistently breaks down. Instead, we observe static Nash play. We then show that restricting algorithms' strategy space can make algorithmic collusion robust, because it limits overfitting to rival strategies. Our findings suggest that policy-makers should focus on firm behavior aimed at coordinating algorithm design in order to make collusive policies robust.

A model is presented for the gravity-driven flow of rainwater descending through the soil layer of a green roof, treated as a porous medium on a flat permeable surface representing an efficient drainage layer. A fully saturated zone is shown to occur. It is typically a thin layer, relative to the total soil thickness, and lies at the bottom of the soil layer. This provides a bottom boundary condition for the partially saturated upper zone. It is shown that after the onset of rainfall, well-defined fronts of water can descend through the soil layer. Also the rainwater flow is relatively quick compared with the moisture uptake by the roots of the plants in the roof. In separate models the exchanges of water are described between the (smaller-scale) porous granules of soil, the roots and the rainwater in the inter-granule pores.
