Aerial imagery and its direct application to visual localization is an essential problem for many Robotics and Computer Vision tasks. While Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are the standard default solution for solving the aerial localization problem, it is subject to a number of limitations, such as, signal instability or solution unreliability that make this option not so desirable. Consequently, visual geolocalization is emerging as a viable alternative. However, adapting Visual Place Recognition (VPR) task to aerial imagery presents significant challenges, including weather variations and repetitive patterns. Current VPR reviews largely neglect the specific context of aerial data. This paper introduces a methodology tailored for evaluating VPR techniques specifically in the domain of aerial imagery, providing a comprehensive assessment of various methods and their performance. However, we not only compare various VPR methods, but also demonstrate the importance of selecting appropriate zoom and overlap levels when constructing map tiles to achieve maximum efficiency of VPR algorithms in the case of aerial imagery. Building a scalable universal high-performance quantum processor is a formidable challenge. In particular, the problem of realizing fast high-perfomance two-qubit gates of high-fidelity remains needful. Here we propose a unitary cell for a scalable quantum processor consisting of two transmons and a tunable three-mode coupler allowing for a ZZ interaction control. We experimentally demonstrate the native CZ gate with the pulse duration of 60~ns achieving the two-qubit gate fidelity above 98%, limited mostly by qubit coherence time. Numerical simulations show that by optimizing the gate duration the fidelity can be pushed over 99.97%., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

Over the past few years, deep neural models have made considerable advances in image quality assessment (IQA). However, the underlying reasons for their success remain unclear, owing to the complex nature of deep neural networks. IQA aims to describe how the human visual system (HVS) works and to create its efficient approximations. On the other hand, Saliency Prediction task aims to emulate HVS via determining areas of visual interest. Thus, we believe that saliency plays a crucial role in human perception. In this work, we conduct an empirical study that reveals the relation between IQA and Saliency Prediction tasks, demonstrating that the former incorporates knowledge of the latter. Moreover, we introduce a novel SACID dataset of saliency-aware compressed images and conduct a large-scale comparison of classic and neural-based IQA methods. We propose a scheme to create and transfer thermal squeezed states and random-phase coherent states in a system of two interacting levitated nanoparticles. In this coupled levitated system, we create a thermal squeezed state of motion in one of the nanoparticles by parametrically driving it and then transferring the state to the other nanoparticle with high fidelity. The transfer mechanism is based on inducing a non-reciprocal type of coupling in the system by suitably modulating the phases of the trapping lasers and the inter-particle distance between the levitated nanoparticles. This non-reciprocal coupling creates a unidirectional channel where information flows from one nanoparticle to the other nanoparticle but not vice versa, thereby allowing for transfer of mechanical states between the nanoparticles with high fidelity. We also affirm this transfer mechanism by creating and efficiently transferring a random-phase coherent state in the coupled levitated system. Further, we make use of the feedback nonlinearity and parametric driving to create simultaneous bistability in the coupled levitated system. Interactive segmentation methods rely on user inputs to iteratively update the selection mask. A click specifying the object of interest is arguably the most simple and intuitive interaction type, and thereby the most common choice for interactive segmentation. However, user clicking patterns in the interactive segmentation context remain unexplored. Accordingly, interactive segmentation evaluation strategies rely more on intuition and common sense rather than empirical studies (e.g., assuming that users tend to click in the center of the area with the largest error). In this work, we conduct a real user study to investigate real user clicking patterns. This study reveals that the intuitive assumption made in the common evaluation strategy may not hold. As a result, interactive segmentation models may show high scores in the standard benchmarks, but it does not imply that they would perform well in a real world scenario. To assess the applicability of interactive segmentation methods, we propose a novel evaluation strategy providing a more comprehensive analysis of a model's performance. To this end, we propose a methodology for finding extreme user inputs by a direct optimization in a white-box adversarial attack on the interactive segmentation model. Based on the performance with such adversarial user inputs, we assess the robustness of interactive segmentation models w.r.t click positions. Besides, we introduce a novel benchmark for measuring the robustness of interactive segmentation, and report the results of an extensive evaluation of dozens of models., Comment: Accepted by AAAI2024

Recent measurements of primary and secondary CR spectra, their arrival directions, and our improved knowledge of the magnetic field geometry around the heliosphere allow us to set a bound on the distance beyond which a puzzling 10-TeV ``bump'' and certain related spectral features \emph{cannot} originate. The sharpness of the spectral breaks associated with the bump, the abrupt change of the CR intensity across the local magnetic equator ($90^{\circ}$ pitch angle), and the similarity between the primary and secondary CR spectral patterns point to a local reacceleration of the bump particles out of the background CRs. We argue that, owing to a steep preexisting CR spectrum, a nearby shock may generate such a bump by boosting particle rigidity by a mere factor of $\sim$1.5 in the range below 50 TV. Reaccelerated particles below $\sim$0.5 TV are convected with the interstellar medium flow and do not reach the Sun. The particles above this rigidity then form the bump. This single universal process is responsible for the observed spectral features of all CR nuclei, primary and secondary, in the rigidity range below 100 TV. We propose that one viable candidate is the system of shocks associated with $\epsilon$ Eridani star at 3.2 pc of the Sun, which is well aligned with the direction of the local magnetic field. Other shocks, such as old supernova shells, may produce a similar effect. We provide a simple formula that reproduces the spectra of all CR species with only three parameters uniquely derived from the CR proton data. We show how our formalism predicts helium, boron, carbon, oxygen, and iron spectra. Our model thus unifies all the CR spectral features observed below 50 TV., Comment: 12 pages Cospar 2022 conf. Scalable quantum computers hold the promise to solve hard computational problems, such as prime factorization, combinatorial optimization, simulation of many-body physics, and quantum chemistry. While being key to understanding many real-world phenomena, simulation of non-conservative quantum dynamics presents a challenge for unitary quantum computation. In this work, we focus on simulating non-unitary parity-time symmetric systems, which exhibit a distinctive symmetry-breaking phase transition as well as other unique features that have no counterpart in closed systems. We show that a qutrit, a three-level quantum system, is capable of realizing this non-equilibrium phase transition. By using two physical platforms -- an array of trapped ions and a superconducting transmon -- and by controlling their three energy levels in a digital manner, we experimentally simulate the parity-time symmetry-breaking phase transition. Our results indicate the potential advantage of multi-level (qudit) processors in simulating physical effects, where additional accessible levels can play the role of a controlled environment., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

The last two decades have brought spectacular advances in astrophysics of cosmic rays (CRs) and space- and ground-based astronomy. Launches of missions that employ forefront detector technologies enabled measurements with large effective areas, wide fields of view, and precision that we recently could not even dream of. Meanwhile, interpretation of the individual slices of information about the internal working of the Milky Way provided by such experiments poses challenges to the traditional astrophysical models. New mysteries arise in the composition and spectra of CR species at low and high energies, in the energy range where we thought the main features were already understood fairly well. This accumulation of unsolved puzzles highlights the peculiarity of the current epoch and means that major breakthroughs are still ahead. In my talk, I review the current state of direct measurements of CRs and discuss their possible interpretations. The Toffoli gate takes a special place in the quantum information theory. It opens up a path for efficient implementation of complex quantum algorithms. Despite tremendous progress of the quantum processors based on the superconducting qubits, realization of a high-fidelity three-qubit operation is still a challenging problem. Here, we propose a novel way to perform a high-fidelity CCZ gate on fluxoniums capacitively connected via a transmon qubit, activated by a microwave pulse on the coupler. The main advantages of the approach are relative quickness, simplicity of calibration and significant suppression of the unwanted longitudinal ZZ interaction. We provide numerical simulation of 95-ns long gate of higher than 99.99% fidelity with realistic circuit parameters in the noiseless model and estimate an error of about 0.25% under the conventional decoherence rates., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables

Quantum light is considered to be one of the key resources of the coming second quantum revolution expected to give rise to groundbreaking technologies and applications. If the spatio-temporal and polarization structure of modes is known, the properties of quantum light are well understood. This information provides the basis for contemporary quantum optics and its applications in quantum communication and metrology. However, thinking about quantum light at the most fundamental timescale, namely the oscillation cycle of a mode or the inverse frequency of an involved photon, we realize that the corresponding picture has been missing until now. For instance, how to comprehend and characterize a single photon at this timescale? To fill this gap, we demonstrate theoretically how local quantum measurements allow to reconstruct and visualize a quantum field under study at subcycle scales, even when its temporal mode structure is a priori unknown. In particular, generation and tomography of ultrabroadband squeezed states as well as photon-subtracted states derived from them are described, incorporating also single-photon states. Our results set a cornerstone in the emerging chapter of quantum physics termed time-domain quantum optics. We expect this development to elicit new spectroscopic concepts for approaching e.g. fundamental correlations and entanglement in the dynamics of quantum matter, overcoming the temporal limitation set by the oscillation cycles of both light and elementary excitations., Comment: 43 pages, 15 figures

High-precision cosmic-ray data from ongoing and recent past experiments (Voyager, ACE-CRIS, PAMELA, ATIC, CREAM, NUCLEON, AMS-02, CALET, DAMPE) are being released in the tens of MeV/n to multi-TeV/n energy range. Astrophysical and dark matter interpretations of these data are limited by the precision of nuclear production cross-sections. In Paper I, PRC 98, 034611 (2018), we set up a procedure to rank nuclear reactions whose desired measurements will enable us to fully exploit currently available data on CR Li to N ($Z=3-7$) species. Here we extend these rankings to O up to Si nuclei ($Z=8-14$), also updating our results on the LiBeB species. We study the generation of entanglement between two qubits which communicate through a single cavity mode of quantum light but have no direct interaction. We show that such entanglement can be generated simply by exchanging quanta with a third party, which is in our case the cavity mode. Exchanging only a single quantum creates maximal entanglement. A single quantum can be provided by an external quantum light source. However, we use a classical light source to pump quanta which are used for the exchange, and investigate the degree of two-qubit entanglement. We first identify a characteristic timescale of the interaction between the cavity mode and each qubit. We investigate two regimes of the driving pulse length, one is short and the other is long compared to the characteristic timescale of the interaction. In the first regime, it is known that the pulse can pump the system by generating a displacement of the cavity mode. We show that, by using a specific pulse shape, one can make the displacement to essentially vanish after the pulse finishes interaction with the cavity mode. In this case, a rotation of the qubits can be invoked. In addition, higher-order effects of the pulse including a non-local operation on the joint system of the cavity mode and the qubits are found, and we present a formalism to compute each term up to a given order. An explicit condition on the pulse shape for each term to be nonzero or suppressed is derived to enable an experimental design for verifying the entanglement generation using a classical light source. In the opposite regime where the driving is sufficiently long, we utilize a squeezed state which may be obtained adiabatically. We study how the squeezing and the accompanied rotation of qubits affect the generated two-qubit entanglement.

We report the discovery of GRB 221009A, the highest flux gamma-ray burst ever observed by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM). This GRB has continuous prompt emission lasting more than 600 seconds which smoothly transitions to afterglow visible in the GBM energy range (8 keV--40 MeV), and total energetics higher than any other burst in the GBM sample. By using a variety of new and existing analysis techniques we probe the spectral and temporal evolution of GRB 221009A. We find no emission prior to the GBM trigger time (t0; 2022 October 9 at 13:16:59.99 UTC), indicating that this is the time of prompt emission onset. The triggering pulse exhibits distinct spectral and temporal properties suggestive of the thermal, photospheric emission of shock-breakout, with significant emission up to $\sim$15 MeV. We characterize the onset of external shock at t0+600 s and find evidence of a plateau region in the early-afterglow phase which transitions to a slope consistent with Swift-XRT afterglow measurements. We place the total energetics of GRB 221009A in context with the rest of the GBM sample and find that this GRB has the highest total isotropic-equivalent energy ($\textrm{E}_{\gamma,\textrm{iso}}=1.0\times10^{55}$ erg) and second highest isotropic-equivalent luminosity ($\textrm{L}_{\gamma,\textrm{iso}}=9.9\times10^{53}$ erg/s) based on redshift of z = 0.151. These extreme energetics are what allowed us to observe the continuously emitting central engine of GBM from the beginning of the prompt emission phase through the onset of early afterglow., Comment: 26 pages 7 figures - accepted for publication in ApJL

This paper presents an approach for creating a visual place recognition (VPR) database for localization in indoor environments from RGBD scanning sequences. The proposed approach is formulated as a minimization problem in terms of dominating set algorithm for graph, constructed from spatial information, and referred as DominatingSet. Our algorithm shows better scene coverage in comparison to other methodologies that are used for database creation. Also, we demonstrate that using DominatingSet, a database size could be up to 250-1400 times smaller than the original scanning sequence while maintaining a recall rate of more than 80% on testing sequences. We evaluated our algorithm on 7-scenes and BundleFusion datasets and an additionally recorded sequence in a highly repetitive office setting. In addition, the database selection can produce weakly-supervised labels for fine-tuning neural place recognition algorithms to particular settings, improving even more their accuracy. The paper also presents a fully automated pipeline for VPR database creation from RGBD scanning sequences, as well as a set of metrics for VPR database evaluation. Tunable couplers have recently become one of the most powerful tools for implementing two-qubit gates between superconducting qubits. A tunable coupler typically includes a nonlinear element, such as a SQUID, which is used to tune the resonance frequency of an LC circuit connecting two qubits. Here we propose a complimentary approach where instead of tuning the resonance frequency of the tunable coupler by applying a quasistatic control signal, we excite by microwave the degree of freedom associated with the coupler itself. Due to strong effective longitudinal coupling between the coupler and the qubits, the frequency of this transition strongly depends on the computational state, leading to different phase accumulations in different states. Using this method, we experimentally demonstrate a CZ gate of 44 ns duration on a fluxonium-based quantum processor, obtaining a fidelity of $97.6\pm 0.4 \%$ characterized by cross-entropy benchmarking., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

The Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) light curve repository (LCR) is a publicly available, continually updated library of gamma-ray light curves of variable Fermi-LAT sources generated over multiple timescales. The Fermi-LAT LCR aims to provide publication-quality light curves binned on timescales of 3 days, 7 days, and 30 days for 1525 sources deemed variable in the source catalog of the first 10 years of Fermi-LAT observations. The repository consists of light curves generated through full likelihood analyses that model the sources and the surrounding region, providing fluxes and photon indices for each time bin. The LCR is intended as a resource for the time-domain and multi-messenger communities by allowing users to quickly search LAT data to identify correlated variability and flaring emission episodes from gamma-ray sources. Using the rigid dipole model, we study the translational and rotational motions of single-domain fer-romagnetic nanoparticles in a dilute suspension induced by the harmonically oscillating gradient magnetic field in the presence of a time-independent uniform magnetic field. Our approach is based on a set of the first-order differential equations that describe the time dependencies of the particle coordinate and mag-netization angle. We find the asymptotic solutions of this set of equations at small and large times and, by applying the matched asymptotic expansions for discrete times, derive analytical expressions for the aver-age particle coordinate and velocity., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure

Precise measurements of the boron-to-carbon and boron-to-oxygen ratios by DAMPE show clear hardenings around $100$ GeV/n, which provide important implications on the production, propagation, and interaction of Galactic cosmic rays. In this work we investigate a number of models proposed in literature in light of the DAMPE findings. These models can roughly be classified into two classes, driven by propagation effects or by source ones. Among these models discussed, we find that the re-acceleration of cosmic rays, during their propagation, by random magnetohydrodynamic waves may not reproduce sufficient hardenings of B/C and B/O, and an additional spectral break of the diffusion coefficient is required. The other models can properly explain the hardenings of the ratios. However, depending on simplifications assumed, the models differ in their quality in reproducing the data in a wide energy range. The models with significant re-acceleration effect will under-predict low-energy antiprotons but over-predict low-energy positrons, and the models with secondary production at sources over-predict high-energy antiprotons. An incremental version of the fourth catalog of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) detected by the Fermi-Large Area Telescope is presented. This version (4LAC-DR3) derives from the third data release of the 4FGL catalog based on 12 years of E>50 MeV gamma-ray data, where the spectral parameters, spectral energy distributions (SEDs), yearly light curves, and associations have been updated for all sources. The new reported AGNs include 587 blazar candidates and four radio galaxies. We describe the properties of the new sample and outline changes affecting the previously published one. We also introduce two new parameters in this release, namely the peak energy of the SED high-energy component and the corresponding flux. In studying the interstellar medium (ISM) and Galactic cosmic rays (CRs), uncertainty of the interstellar gas density has always been an issue. To overcome this difficulty, we used a component decomposition of the 21-cm HI line emission and used the resulting gas maps in an analysis of $\gamma$-ray data obtained by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) for the MBM~53, 54, and 55 molecular clouds and the Pegasus loop. We decomposed the ISM gas into intermediate-velocity clouds, narrow-line and optically thick HI, broad-line and optically thin HI, CO-bright H2, and CO-dark H2 using detailed correlations with the HI line profiles from the HI4PI survey, the Planck dust-emission model, and the Fermi-LAT $\gamma$-ray data. We found the fractions of optical depth correction to the HI column density and CO-dark H2 to be nearly equal. We fitted the CR spectra directly measured at/near the Earth and the measured $\gamma$-ray emissivity spectrum simultaneously. We obtained a spectral break in the interstellar proton spectrum at ${\sim}$7~GeV, and found the $\gamma$-ray emissivity normalization agrees with the AMS-02 proton spectrum within 10\%, relaxing the tension with the CR spectra previously claimed., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

Cosmic rays are mostly composed of protons accelerated to relativistic speeds. When those protons encounter interstellar material, they produce neutral pions which in turn decay into gamma rays. This offers a compelling way to identify the acceleration sites of protons. A characteristic hadronic spectrum, with a low-energy break around 200 MeV, was detected in the gamma-ray spectra of four Supernova Remnants (SNRs), IC 443, W44, W49B and W51C, with the Fermi Large Area Telescope. This detection provided direct evidence that cosmic-ray protons are (re-)accelerated in SNRs. Here, we present a comprehensive search for low-energy spectral breaks among 311 4FGL catalog sources located within 5 degrees from the Galactic plane. Using 8 years of data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope between 50 MeV and 1 GeV, we find and present the spectral characteristics of 56 sources with a spectral break confirmed by a thorough study of systematic uncertainty. Our population of sources includes 13 SNRs for which the proton-proton interaction is enhanced by the dense target material; the high-mass gamma-ray binary LS~I +61 303; the colliding wind binary eta Carinae; and the Cygnus star-forming region. This analysis better constrains the origin of the gamma-ray emission and enlarges our view to potential new cosmic-ray acceleration sites., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Superconducting fluxonium qubits provide a promising alternative to transmons on the path toward large-scale superconductor-based quantum computing due to their better coherence and larger anharmonicity. A major challenge for multi-qubit fluxonium devices is the experimental demonstration of a scalable crosstalk-free multi-qubit architecture with high fidelity single-qubit and two-qubit gates, single-shot readout and state initialization. Here, we present a two-qubit fluxonium-based quantum processor with a tunable coupler element following our theoretical proposal [DOI: 10.1063/5.0064800]. We experimentally demonstrate fSim-type and controlled-Z gates with $99.55\%$ and $99.23\%$ fidelities, respectively. The residual ZZ interaction is suppressed down to the few kHz level. Using a galvanically coupled flux control line, we implement high fidelity single-qubit gates and ground state initialization with a single arbitrary waveform generator channel per qubit., Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures

Since its launch, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-02 (AMS-02) has delivered outstanding quality measurements of the spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) species, $\bar{p}$, $e^{\pm}$, and nuclei (H-Si, Fe), which resulted in a number of breakthroughs. The most recent AMS-02 result is the measurement of the spectra of CR sodium and aluminum up to $\sim$2 TV. Given their low solar system abundances, a significant fraction of each element is produced in fragmentations of heavier species, predominantly Ne, Mg, and Si. In this paper, we use precise measurements of the sodium and aluminum spectra by AMS-02 together with ACE-CRIS and Voyager 1 data to test their origin. We show that the sodium spectrum agrees well with the predictions made with the GalProp-HelMod framework, while aluminum spectrum shows a significant excess in the rigidity range from 2-7 GV. In this context, we discuss the origin of other low-energy excesses in Li, F, and Fe found earlier. The observed excesses in Li, F, and Al appear to be consistent with the local Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars hypothesis, invoked to reproduce anomalous $^{22}$Ne/$^{20}$Ne, $^{12}$C/$^{16}$O, and $^{58}$Fe/$^{56}$Fe ratios in CRs, while excess in Fe is likely connected with a past SN activity in the solar neighborhood. We also provide updated local interstellar spectra (LIS) of sodium and aluminum in the rigidity range from few MV to $\sim$2 TV. The influence of measurement back action on electro-optic sampling of electromagnetic quantum fluctuations is investigated. Based on a cascaded treatment of the nonlinear interaction between a near-infrared coherent probe and the mid-infrared vacuum, we account for the generated electric-field contributions that lead to detectable back action. Specifically, we theoretically address two realistic setups, exploiting one or two probe beams for the nonlinear interaction with the quantum vacuum, respectively. The setup parameters at which back action starts to considerably contaminate the measured noise profiles are determined. Due to the vacuum fluctuations entering at the beam splitter, the shot noise of two incoming probe pulses in different channels is uncorrelated. This leads to the absence of the base-level shot noise in the correlation, while further contributions due to nonlinear shot-noise enhancement are still present. Ultimately, the regime in which electro-optic sampling of quantum fields can be considered as effectively back-action free is found., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, plus Supplemental Material (12 pages)

We present an incremental version (4FGL-DR3, for Data Release 3) of the fourth Fermi-LAT catalog of gamma-ray sources. Based on the first twelve years of science data in the energy range from 50 MeV to 1 TeV, it contains 6658 sources. The analysis improves on that used for the 4FGL catalog over eight years of data: more sources are fit with curved spectra, we introduce a more robust spectral parameterization for pulsars, and we extend the spectral points to 1 TeV. The spectral parameters, spectral energy distributions, and associations are updated for all sources. Light curves are rebuilt for all sources with 1 yr intervals (not 2 month intervals). Among the 5064 original 4FGL sources, 16 were deleted, 112 are formally below the detection threshold over 12 yr (but are kept in the list), while 74 are newly associated, 10 have an improved association, and seven associations were withdrawn. Pulsars are split explicitly between young and millisecond pulsars. Pulsars and binaries newly detected in LAT sources, as well as more than 100 newly classified blazars, are reported. We add three extended sources and 1607 new point sources, mostly just above the detection threshold, among which eight are considered identified, and 699 have a plausible counterpart at other wavelengths. We discuss degree-scale residuals to the global sky model and clusters of soft unassociated point sources close to the Galactic plane, which are possibly related to limitations of the interstellar emission model and missing extended sources., Comment: accepted in ApJS; follow-up paper to 1902.10045

We propose and analyze a new time-domain method for subcycle metrology of quantum electric fields using a combination of a 3rd order nonlinear optical process and homodyne detection with a local oscillator (LO) field. The new method enables isolation of intrinsically weak quantum noise contribution by subtraction of the shot noise of the LO on a pulse-by-pulse basis. Together with the centro-symmetric character of the nonlinearity, our method unlocks novel opportunities toward terahertz and mid-infrared quantum field metrologies.

The past decade has brought impressive advances in the astrophysics of cosmic rays (CRs) and multiwavelength astronomy, thanks to the new instrumentation launched into space and built on the ground. Modern technologies employed by those instruments provide measurements with unmatched precision, enabling searches for subtle signatures of dark matter (DM) and new physics. Understanding the astrophysical backgrounds to better precision than the observed data is vital in moving to this new territory. The state-of-the-art CR propagation code called GALPROP is designed to address exactly this challenge. Having 25 years of development behind it, the GALPROP framework has become a de-facto standard in the astrophysics of CRs, diffuse photon emissions (radio- to gamma-rays), and searches for new physics. GALPROP uses information from astronomy, particle physics, and nuclear physics to predict CRs and their associated emissions self-consistently, providing a unifying modelling framework. The range of its physical validity covers 18 orders of magnitude in energy, from sub-keV to PeV energies for particles and from micro-eV to PeV energies for photons. The framework and the datasets are public and are extensively used by many experimental collaborations and by thousands of individual researchers worldwide for interpretation of their data and for making predictions. This paper details the latest release of the GALPROP framework and updated cross sections, further developments of its initially auxiliary datasets for models of the interstellar medium that grew into independent studies of the Galactic structure -- distributions of gas, dust, radiation and magnetic fields -- as well as the extension of its modelling capabilities. The sky at MeV energies is currently poorly explored. Here we present an innovative mission concept that builds on and improves past and currently proposed missions at such energies. We outline the motivations for combining a coded mask and a Compton telescope and we define the scientific goals of such a mission. The Galactic Explorer with a Coded Aperture Mask Compton Telescope (GECCO) is a novel concept for a next-generation telescope covering hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray energies. The potential and importance of this approach that bridges the observational gap in the MeV energy range are presented. With the unprecedented angular resolution of the coded mask telescope combined with the sensitive Compton telescope, a mission such as GECCO can disentangle the discrete sources from the truly diffuse emission. Individual Galactic and extragalactic sources are detected. This also allows to understand the gamma-ray Galactic center excess and the Fermi Bubbles, and to trace the low-energy cosmic rays, and their propagation in the Galaxy. Nuclear and annihilation lines are spatially and spectrally resolved from the continuum emission and from sources, addressing the role of low-energy cosmic rays in star formation and galaxy evolution, the origin of the 511 keV positron line, fundamental physics, and the chemical enrichment in the Galaxy. Such an instrument also detects explosive transient gamma-ray sources, which enable identifying and studying the astrophysical objects that produce gravitational waves and neutrinos in a multi-messenger context. We study the deterministic dynamics of single-domain ferromagnetic nanoparticles in a viscous liquid induced by the joint action of the gradient and uniform magnetic fields. It is assumed that the gradient field depends on time harmonically and the uniform field has two components, perpendicular and parallel to the gradient one. We also assume that the anisotropy magnetic field is so strong that the nanoparticle magnetization lies along the anisotropy axis, i.e., the magnetization vector is "frozen" into the particle body. With these assumptions and neglecting inertial effects we derive the torque and force balance equations that describe the rotational and translational motions of particles. We reduce these equations to a set of two coupled equations for the magnetization angle and particle coordinate, solve them numerically in a wide range of the system parameters and analyze the role of the parallel component of the uniform magnetic field. It is shown, in particular, that nanoparticles perform only periodic rotational and translational motions if the perpendicular component of the uniform magnetic field is absent. In contrast, the nanoparticle dynamics in the presence of this component becomes non-periodic, resulting in the drift motion (directed transport) of nanoparticles. By analyzing the short and long-time dependencies of the magnetization angle and particle coordinate we show that the increase in the parallel component of the uniform magnetic field decreases both the particle displacement for a fixed time and its average drift velocity on each period of the gradient magnetic field., Comment: 5 pages

Nanoindentation of viral capsids provides an efficient tool in order to probe their elastic properties. We investigate in the present work the various sources of stiffness heterogeneity as observed in Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) experiments. By combining experimental results with both numerical and analytical modeling, we first show that for small viruses a position-dependent stiffness is observed. This effect is strong and has not been properly taken into account previously. Moreover, we show that a geometrical model is able to reproduce this effect quantitatively. Our work suggests alternative ways of measuring stiffness heterogeneities on small viral capsids. This is illustrated on two different viral capsids: Adeno Associated Virus serotype 8 (AAV8) and Hepatitis B Virus (HBV with T=4). In the present work the Chern-Simons(C-S) gauge field theory developed by Jackiw and Pi [1] and widely used to explain the fractional quantum Hall effects, was applied to describe the two-dimensional (2D) electron-hole (e-h) system in a strong perpendicular magnetic field under the influence of the quantum point vortices creating the Chern-Simons(C-S) gauge field. The composite particles formed by electrons and by holes with equal integer positive numbers of the attached quantum point vortices are described by the dressed field operators, which obey to the Fermi or to the Bose statistics depending on the even or odd numbers . It is shown that the phase operators as well as the vector and the scalar potentials of the C-S gauge field depend on the difference of the electron and of the hole density operators. They vanish in the mean field approximation, when the average values of the electron and of the whole densities coincide. Nevertheless, even in this case, the quantum fluctuations of the C-S gauge field lead to new physics of the 2D e-h system., Comment: 28 pages

We propose a novel neural-network-based method to perform matting of videos depicting people that does not require additional user input such as trimaps. Our architecture achieves temporal stability of the resulting alpha mattes by using motion-estimation-based smoothing of image-segmentation algorithm outputs, combined with convolutional-LSTM modules on U-Net skip connections. We also propose a fake-motion algorithm that generates training clips for the video-matting network given photos with ground-truth alpha mattes and background videos. We apply random motion to photos and their mattes to simulate movement one would find in real videos and composite the result with the background clips. It lets us train a deep neural network operating on videos in an absence of a large annotated video dataset and provides ground-truth training-clip foreground optical flow for use in loss functions., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

The superconducting fluxonium circuit is an RF-SQUID-type flux qubit that uses a large inductance built from an array of Josephson junctions or a high kinetic inductance material. This inductance suppresses charge sensitivity exponentially and flux sensitivity quadratically. In contrast to the transmon qubit, the anharmonicity of fluxonium can be large and positive, allowing for better separation between the low energy qubit manifold of the circuit and higher-lying excited states. Here, we propose a tunable coupling scheme for implementing two-qubit gates on fixed-frequency fluxonium qubits, biased at half flux quantum. In this system, both qubits and coupler are coupled capacitively and implemented as fluxonium circuits with an additional harmonic mode. We investigate the performance of the scheme by simulating a universal two-qubit fSim gate. In the proposed approach, we rely on a planar on-chip architecture for the whole device. Our design is compatible with existing hardware for transmon-based devices, with the additional advantage of lower qubit frequency facilitating high-precision gating., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

We explore experimentally a quantum metamaterial based on a superconducting chip with 25 frequency-tunable transmon qubits coupled to a common coplanar resonator. The collective bright and dark modes are probed via the microwave response, i.e., by measuring the transmission amplitude of an external microwave signal. All qubits have individual control and readout lines. Their frequency tunability allows to change the number N of resonantly coupled qubits and also to introduce a disorder in their excitation frequencies with preassigned distributions. While increasing N, we demonstrate the expected $N^{1/2}$ scaling law for the energy gap (Rabi splitting) between bright modes around the cavity frequency. By introducing a controllable disorder and averaging the transmission amplitude over a large number of realizations, we demonstrate a decay of mesoscopic fluctuations which mimics an approach towards the thermodynamic limit. The collective bright states survive in the presence of disorder when the strength of individual qubit coupling to the cavity dominates over the disorder strength., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures. The Large Area Telescope (LAT), the primary instrument for the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi) mission, is an imaging, wide field-of-view, high-energy gamma-ray telescope, covering the energy range from 30 MeV to more than 300 GeV. We describe the performance of the instrument at the 10-year milestone. LAT performance remains well within the specifications defined during the planning phase, validating the design choices and supporting the compelling case to extend the duration of the Fermi mission. Since its launch, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-02 (AMS-02) has delivered outstanding quality measurements of the spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) species, $\bar{p}$, $e^{\pm}$, and nuclei (H--O, Ne, Mg, Si, Fe), which resulted in a number of breakthroughs. The most recent AMS-02 result is the measurement of the spectrum of CR fluorine up to $\sim$2 TV. Given its very low solar system abundance, fluorine in CRs is thought to be mostly secondary, produced in fragmentations of heavier species, predominantly Ne, Mg, and Si. Similar to the best-measured secondary-to-primary boron to carbon nuclei ratio that is widely used to study the origin and propagation of CR species, the precise fluorine data would allow the origin of Si-group nuclei to be studied independently. Meanwhile, the secondary origin of CR fluorine has never been tested in a wide energy range due to the lack of accurate CR data. In this paper, we use the first ever precise measurements of the fluorine spectrum by AMS-02 together with ACE-CRIS and Voyager 1 data to actually test this paradigm. Our detailed modeling shows an excess below 10 GV in the fluorine spectrum that may hint at a primary fluorine component. We also provide an updated local interstellar spectrum (LIS) of fluorine in the rigidity range from few MV to $\sim$2 TV. We present the first Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) catalog of long-term $\gamma$-ray transient sources (1FLT). This comprises sources that were detected on monthly time intervals during the first decade of Fermi-LAT operations. The monthly time scale allows us to identify transient and variable sources that were not yet reported in other Fermi-LAT catalogs. The monthly datasets were analyzed using a wavelet-based source detection algorithm that provided the candidate new transient sources. The search was limited to the extragalactic regions of the sky to avoid the dominance of the Galactic diffuse emission at low Galactic latitudes. The transient candidates were then analyzed using the standard Fermi-LAT Maximum Likelihood analysis method. All sources detected with a statistical significance above 4$\sigma$ in at least one monthly bin were listed in the final catalog. The 1FLT catalog contains 142 transient $\gamma$-ray sources that are not included in the 4FGL-DR2 catalog. Many of these sources (102) have been confidently associated with Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN): 24 are associated with Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars; 1 with a BL Lac object; 70 with Blazars of Uncertain Type; 3 with Radio Galaxies; 1 with a Compact Steep Spectrum radio source; 1 with a Steep Spectrum Radio Quasar; 2 with AGN of other types. The remaining 40 sources have no candidate counterparts at other wavelengths. The median $\gamma$-ray spectral index of the 1FLT-AGN sources is softer than that reported in the latest Fermi-LAT AGN general catalog. We investigate high-order harmonics spectra radiated from a two-level model system driven by strong, ultrabroadband half- and single-cycle pulses, which are shorter than the inverse of the transition frequency. In this driving regime, the plateau in frequency spectra typical for radiation from strongly driven systems, has noticeable modulation in amplitude due to interference between waves of a same frequency and emitted at different time instants. Specifically, there is a characteristic `dips' structure at a set of frequencies in the radiation spectra, where the corresponding amplitudes are suppressed by several orders of magnitude. Understanding of this structure is required for applications such as generation of attosecond pulse, where number of composing modes and their relative phases are important. Therefore, we demonstrate a systematic way to find frequencies at which the dips are formed. To further illustrate the interference mechanism, we extract the phase information with the help of time-frequency distribution functions, namely the Husimi and Wigner functions. Especially, we found that the negativity structure of the Wigner function corresponds to each dip frequency and that the information regarding the type of interference is encoded in the pattern of the negative region of the Wigner function. Since such time-frequency Wigner function can actually be measured, we envisage utilizing its negativity structure to extract the phase information between radiation components emitted at time points within a subcycle time scale. This should provide an efficient tool for understanding and designing photonic applications, including short-wavelength coherent light sources., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Recent precise measurements of primary and secondary cosmic rays (CRs) in the TV rigidity domain have unveiled a bump in their spectra, located between 0.5-50 TV. We argue that a local shock may generate such a bump by increasing the rigidity of the preexisting CRs below 50 TV by a mere factor of ~1.5. Reaccelerated particles below ~0.5 TV are convected with the interstellar medium (ISM) flow and do not reach the Sun, thus creating the bump. This single universal process is responsible for the observed spectra of all CR species in the rigidity range below 100 TV. We propose that one viable shock candidate is the Epsilon Eridani star at 3.2 pc from the Sun, which is well-aligned with the direction of the local magnetic field. Other shocks, such as old supernova shells, may produce a similar effect. We provide a simple formula, Eq. (9), that reproduces the spectra of all CR species with only two nonadjustable shock parameters, uniquely derived from the proton data. In recent years, the field of image inpainting has developed rapidly, learning based approaches show impressive results in the task of filling missing parts in an image. But most deep methods are strongly tied to the resolution of the images on which they were trained. A slight resolution increase leads to serious artifacts and unsatisfactory filling quality. These methods are therefore unsuitable for interactive image processing. In this article, we propose a method that solves the problem of inpainting arbitrary-size images. We also describe a way to better restore texture fragments in the filled area. For this, we propose to use information from neighboring pixels by shifting the original image in four directions. Moreover, this approach can work with existing inpainting models, making them almost resolution independent without the need for retraining. We report a detailed theoretical study of a coherent macroscopic quantum-mechanical phenomenon - quantum beats of a single magnetic fluxon trapped in a two-cell SQUID of high kinetic inductance. We calculate numerically and analytically the low-lying energy levels of the fluxon, and explore their dependence on externally applied magnetic fields. The quantum dynamics of the fluxon shows quantum beats originating from its coherent quantum tunneling between the SQUID cells. We analyze the experimental setup based on a three-cell SQUID, allowing for time-resolved measurements of quantum beats of the fluxon., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

A new theoretical framework to describe the experimental advances in electro-optic detection of broadband quantum states, specifically the quantum vacuum, is devised. By making use of fundamental concepts from quantum field theory on spacetime metrics, the nonlinear interaction behind the electro-optic effect can be reformulated in terms of an Unruh-DeWitt detector coupled to a conjugate field during a very short time interval. When the coupling lasts for a time interval comparable to the oscillation periods of the detected field mode (i.e. the subcycle regime), virtual particles inhabiting the field vacuum are transferred to the detector in the form of real excitations. We demonstrate that this behavior can be rigorously translated to the scenario of electro-optic sampling of the quantum vacuum, in which the (spectrally filtered) probe works as an Unruh-DeWitt detector, with its interaction-generated photons arising from virtual particles inhabiting the electromagnetic vacuum. We discuss the specific working regime of such processes, and the consequences through characterization of the quantum light involved in the detection.

Electro-optic sampling has emerged as a new quantum technique enabling measurements of electric field fluctuations on subcycle time scales. Probing a second-order nonlinear material with an ultrashort coherent laser pulse imprints the fluctuations of a terahertz field onto the resulting near-infrared electrooptic signal. We describe how the statistics of this time-domain signal can be calculated theoretically, incorporating from the onset the quantum nature of the electric fields involved in the underlying interactions. To this end, a microscopic quantum theory of the electro-optic process is developed using an ensemble of non-interacting three-level systems as a model for the nonlinear material. We find that the response of the nonlinear medium can be separated into a classical part sampling the terahertz field and quantum contributions independent of the state of the probed terahertz field. The quantum response is caused by interactions between the three-level systems mediated by the terahertz vacuum fluctuations. It arises due to cascading processes and contributions described by quantum susceptibilities solely accessible via quantum light. We show that the quantum contributions can be substantial and might even dominate the total response. We also determine the conditions under which the classical response serves as a good approximation of the electro-optic process and demonstrate how the statistics of the sampled terahertz field can be reconstructed from the statistics of the electro-optic signal. (Abridged) Modern studies and industrial applications related to the design, radiation protection, and reliability of nuclear facilities, medical applications, as well as space research and exploration are relying on extensive simulations and modeling. Computer codes realizing semi-classical and quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) approaches are often employed to make up for the lack of accelerator data on many nuclear reactions at intermediate and high energies (>10s of MeV/n) and are in high demand. This contribution focuses on the methodology of generating reliable proton-induced cross sections in the energy range below 1 GeV. We developed a problem-oriented computer framework based on MCNPX and CASCADE/INPE codes to calculate activation cross section data at intermediate and high energies. Goodness of the fits of nucleon-nucleus interaction models to the existing data is evaluated based on elaborated algorithms. The method is based on the analysis of a large set of data and calculated cross sections for different targets and residual nuclei in a wide range of proton energies using numerous criteria. In practice, this could be done by tuning the model parameters and algorithms to fit required experimental data subset, or through achieving unification and consistency of fundamental parameters for all considered reactions. The presented framework is pursuing the latter approach. We use proton-induced reactions on Si and Fe nuclei to illustrate the application of the developed multi-criteria algorithm, where we use all data below 1 GeV available from the EXFOR data library and the IAEA CRP "Benchmark of Spallation Models." Since its launch, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer - 02 (AMS-02) has delivered outstanding quality measurements of the spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) species, $\bar{p}$, $e^{\pm}$, and nuclei, $_1$H-$_8$O, $_{10}$Ne, $_{12}$Mg, $_{14}$Si, which resulted in a number of breakthroughs. One of the latest long awaited surprises is the spectrum of $_{26}$Fe just published by AMS-02. Because of the large fragmentation cross section and large ionization energy losses, most of CR iron at low energies is local, and may harbor some features associated with relatively recent supernova (SN) activity in the solar neighborhood. Our analysis of new iron spectrum together with Voyager 1 and ACE-CRIS data reveals an unexpected bump in the iron spectrum and in the Fe/He, Fe/O, and Fe/Si ratios at 1-2 GV, while a similar feature in the spectra of He, O, Si, and in their ratios is absent, hinting at a local source of low-energy CRs. The found excess fits well with recent discoveries of radioactive $^{60}$Fe deposits in terrestrial and lunar samples, and in CRs. We provide an updated local interstellar spectrum (LIS) of iron in the energy range from 1 MeV nucleon$^{-1}$ to $\sim$10 TeV nucleon$^{-1}$. We present the first Fermi - Large Area Telescope (LAT) solar flare catalog covering the 24 th solar cycle. This catalog contains 45 Fermi -LAT solar flares (FLSFs) with emission in the gamma-ray energy band (30 MeV - 10 GeV) detected with a significance greater than 5 sigma over the years 2010-2018. A subsample containing 37 of these flares exhibit delayed emission beyond the prompt-impulsive hard X-ray phase with 21 flares showing delayed emission lasting more than two hours. No prompt-impulsive emission is detected in four of these flares. We also present in this catalog the observations of GeV emission from 3 flares originating from Active Regions located behind the limb (BTL) of the visible solar disk. We report the light curves, spectra, best proton index and localization (when possible) for all the FLSFs. The gamma-ray spectra is consistent with the decay of pions produced by >300 MeV protons. This work contains the largest sample of high-energy gamma-ray flares ever reported and provides the unique opportunity to perform population studies on the different phases of the flare and thus allowing to open a new window in solar physics., Comment: Published in ApJS

We theoretically investigate tunneling through free-space or dielectric nanogaps between metallic nanocontacts driven by ultrashort ultrabroadband light pulses. For this purpose we develop a time-dependent quasiclassical theory being especially suitable to describe the tunneling process in the non-adiabatic regime, when this process can be significantly influenced by the photon absorption as the electron moves in the classically forbidden region. Firstly, the case of driving by an ideal half-cycle pulse is studied. For different distances between the contacts, we analyze the main solutions having the form of a quasiclassical wave packet of the tunneling electron and an evanescent wave of the electron density. For each of these solutions the resulting tunneling probability is determined with the exponential accuracy inherent to the method. We identify a crossover between two tunneling regimes corresponding to both solutions in dependence on the field strength and intercontact distance that can be observed in the corresponding behaviour of the tunneling probability. Secondly, considering realistic temporal profiles of few-femtosecond pulses, we demonstrate that the preferred direction of the electron transport through the nanogap can be controlled by changing the carrier-envelope phase of the pulse, in agreement with recent experimental findings and numerical simulations. We find analytical expressions for the tunneling probability, determining the resulting charge transfer in dependence on the pulse parameters. Further, we determine temporal shifts of the outgoing electron trajectories with respect to the peaks of the laser field in dependence on the pulse phase and illustrate when the non-adiabatical character of the tunneling process is particularly important., Comment: 38 pages, 13 figures

An excess $\gamma$-ray signal toward the outer halo of M31 has recently been reported. Although other explanations are plausible, the possibility that it arises from dark matter (DM) is valid. In this work we interpret the excess in the framework of DM annihilation, using as our representative case WIMP DM annihilating to bottom quarks, and we perform a detailed study of the systematic uncertainty in the $J$-factor for the M31 field. We find that the signal favors a DM particle with a mass of $\sim$46-73 GeV. While the mass is well constrained, the systematic uncertainty in the cross-section spans 2.5 orders of magnitude, ranging from $\sim$8$\times 10^{-27}-4 \times 10^{-24} \ \mathrm{cm^3 \ s^{-1}}$. This high uncertainty is due to two main factors, namely, an uncertainty in the substructure nature and geometry of the DM halos for both M31 and the Milky Way (MW), and correspondingly, an uncertainty in the contribution to the signal from the MW's DM halo along the line of sight. However, under the conditions that the minimum subhalo mass is $\lesssim 10^{-6} \ M_\odot$ and the actual contribution from the MW's DM halo along the line of sight is at least $\sim$30$\%$ of its total value, we show that there is a large overlap with the DM interpretations of both the Galactic center (GC) excess and the antiproton excess, while also being compatible with the limits for the MW dwarf spheroidals. More generally, we summarize the results from numerous complementary DM searches in the energy range 10 GeV $-$ 300 GeV corresponding to the GC excess and identify a region in parameter space that still remains viable for discovery of the DM particle., Comment: Submitted to Physical Review D

A recently observed bump in the cosmic ray (CR) spectrum from 0.3--30 TV is likely caused by a stellar bow shock that reaccelerates \emph{preexisting} CRs, which further propagate to the Sun along the magnetic field lines. Along their way, these particles generate an Iroshnikov-Kraichnan (I-K) turbulence that controls their propagation and sustains the bump. {\it Ad hoc} fitting of the bump shape requires six adjustable parameters. Our model requires none, merely depending on \emph{three physical unknowns that we constrain using the fit.} These are the shock Mach number, $M$, its size, $l_{\perp}$, and the distance to it, $\zeta_{\text{obs}}$. Altogether, they define the bump rigidity $R_{0}$. With $M$$\approx$1.5--1.6 and $R_{0}$$\approx$4.4 TV, the model fits the data with $\approx$$0.08\%$ accuracy. The fit critically requires the I-K spectrum predicted by the model and rules out the alternatives. These fit's attributes make an accidental agreement highly unlikely. In turn, $R_{0}$ and $M$ derived from the fit impose the distance-size %($\zeta_{{\rm obs}}$$-$$l_{\perp}$) relation on the shock: $\zeta_{{\rm obs}}$(pc)$\sim$$10^{2}\sqrt{l_{\perp}(\text{pc})}$. For sufficiently large bow shocks, $l_{\perp}$$=$$10^{-3}$$-$$10^{-2}$ pc, we find the distance of $\zeta_{{\rm obs}}$$=$3--10 pc. Three promising stars in this range are: Scholz's Star at 6.8 pc, Epsilon Indi at 3.6 pc, and Epsilon Eridani at 3.2 pc. Based on their current positions and velocities, we propose that Epsilon Indi and Epsilon Eridani can produce the observed spectral bump. Moreover, Epsilon Eridani's position is only $\sim$$6.7^{\circ}$ off of the magnetic field direction in the solar neighborhood, which also changes the CR arrival direction distribution. Wikipedia is edited by volunteer editors around the world. Considering the large amount of existing content (e.g. over 5M articles in English Wikipedia), deciding what to edit next can be difficult, both for experienced users that usually have a huge backlog of articles to prioritize, as well as for newcomers who that might need guidance in selecting the next article to contribute. Therefore, helping editors to find relevant articles should improve their performance and help in the retention of new editors. In this paper, we address the problem of recommending relevant articles to editors. To do this, we develop a scalable system on top of Graph Convolutional Networks and Doc2Vec, learning how to represent Wikipedia articles and deliver personalized recommendations for editors. We test our model on editors' histories, predicting their most recent edits based on their prior edits. We outperform competitive implicit-feedback collaborative-filtering methods such as WMRF based on ALS, as well as a traditional IR-method such as content-based filtering based on BM25. All of the data used on this paper is publicly available, including graph embeddings for Wikipedia articles, and we release our code to support replication of our experiments. Moreover, we contribute with a scalable implementation of a state-of-art graph embedding algorithm as current ones cannot efficiently handle the sheer size of the Wikipedia graph.
