Point defect tolerance in materials, which extends operational lifetime, is essential for societal sustainability, and the creation of a framework to design such properties is a grand challenge in the material sciences. Using three prototypical lead bromide perovskites in single crystal form and high-resolution synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopy, we reveal the unexpectedly pivotal role of the A-cation in mediating the influence of photoinduced defects. Organic A-cation hydrogen bonding facilitates chemical flexing of the lead-bromide bond that mitigates the self-doping effect of bromide vacancies. The contribution of partially ionic lead-bromide bonding to the electronic band edges, where the bonding becomes more ionic upon the formation of defects, mitigates re-hybridization of the electronic structure upon degradation. These findings reveal two new general design principles for defect tolerance in materials. Our findings uncover the foundations of defect tolerance in halide perovskites and have implications for defect calculations, all beam-based measurements of photophysical properties and perovskite solar cell technology.

Two-dimensional halide perovskites are among intensely studied materials platforms profiting from solution based growth and chemical flexibility. They feature exceptionally strong interactions among electronic, optical as well as vibrational excitations and hold a great potential for future optoelectronic applications. A key feature for these materials is the occurrence of structural phase transitions that can impact their functional properties, including the electronic band gap and optical response dominated by excitons. However, to what extent the phase-transitions in two-dimensional perovskites alter the fundamental exciton properties remains barely explored so far. Here, we study the influence of the phase transition on both exciton binding energy and exciton diffusion, demonstrating their robust nature across the phase transition. These findings are unexpected in view of the associated substantial changes of the free carrier masses, strongly contrast broadly considered effective mass and drift-diffusion transport mechanisms, highlighting the unusual nature of excitons in two-dimensional perovskites.

Hot carrier solar cells hold promise for exceeding the Shockley-Queisser limit. Slow hot carrier cooling is one of the most intriguing properties of lead halide perovskites and distinguishes this class of materials from competing materials used in solar cells. Here we use the element selectivity of high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy to uncover a previously hidden feature in the conduction band states, the {\sigma}-{\pi} energy separation, and find that it is strongly influenced by the strength of electronic coupling between the A-cation and bromide-lead sublattice. Our finding provides an alternative mechanism to the commonly discussed polaronic screening and hot phonon bottleneck carrier cooling mechanisms. Our work emphasizes the optoelectronic role of the A-cation, provides a comprehensive view of A-cation effects in the electronic and crystal structures, and outlines a broadly applicable spectroscopic approach for assessing the impact of chemical alterations of the A-cation on halide and potentially non-halide perovskite electronic structure., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Organic-inorganic halide perovskites have been intensively re-investigated due to their applications, yet the opto-electronic function of the organic cation remains unclear. Through organic-selective resonant Auger electron spectroscopy measurements on well-defined single crystal surfaces, we find evidence for electronic coupling in the unoccupied states between the organic and inorganic sub-lattices of the prototypical hybrid perovskite, which is contrary to the notion based on previous studies that the organic cation is electronically inert. Organic-inorganic perovskites have shown great promise towards their application in optoelectronics. The success of this class of material is dictated by the complex interplay between various underlying microscopic phenomena. The structural dynamics of organic cations and the inorganic sublattice after photoexcitation is hypothesized to have a direct effect on the material properties, thereby affecting the overall device performance. Here, we use two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectroscopy to reveal impulsively excited vibrational modes of methylammonium (MA) lead iodide perovskite, which drive the structural distortion after photoexcitation. The vibrational analysis of the measured data allows us to directly monitor the time evolution of the librational motion of the MA cation along with the vibrational coherences of inorganic sublattice. Wavelet analysis of the observed vibrational coherences uncovers the interplay between these two types of phonons. It reveals the coherent generation of the librational motion of the MA cation within ~300 fs, which is complemented by the coherent evolution of the skeletal motion of the inorganic sublattice. We have employed time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) to study the atomic motion of the MA cation and the inorganic sublattice during the process of photoexcitation. The TDDFT calculations support our experimental observations of the coherent generation of librational motions in the MA cation and highlight the importance of the anharmonic interaction between the MA cation and the inorganic sublattice. Our calculations predict the transfer of the photoinduced vibrational coherence from the MA cation to the inorganic sublattice, which drives the skeleton motion to form a polaronic state leading to long lifetimes of the charge carriers. This work may lead to novel design principles for next generation of solar cell materials.

Singlet fission is a spin-allowed exciton multiplication process in organic semiconductors that converts one spin-singlet exciton to two triplet excitons. It offers the potential to enhance solar energy conversion by circumventing the Shockley-Queisser limit on efficiency. Recently, the mechanism of the primary singlet fission process in pentacene and its derivatives have been extensively investigated, however, the nature of the primary ultrafast process in singlet fission is still a matter of debate. Here, we study the singlet fission process in a pentacene film by employing a combination of transient-grating (TG) and two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectroscopy complemented by quantum chemical and nonadiabatic dynamics calculations. The high sensitivity of heterodyne detected TG spectroscopy enabled us to capture the vibrational coherence and to show that it mediates the transition from the singlet excited electronic state to the triplet-pair state. This coherent process is further examined by 2D electronic spectroscopy. Detailed analysis of the experimental data reveals that significant vibronic couplings of a few key modes in the low- and high-frequency region connect the excited singlet and triplet-pair states. Based on quantum chemical calculations, we identify these key intermolecular rocking modes along the longitudinal molecular axis between the pentacene molecules. They play the essential role of an electronic bridge between the singlet and triplet-pair states. Along with high-frequency local vibrations acting as tuning modes, these rocking motions drive the ultrafast dynamics at the multidimensional conical intersection in the singlet fission process.

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have recently emerged as highly promising solution-processable materials for photovoltaic (PV) and other optoelectronic devices. HOIPs represent a broad family of materials with properties highly tuneable by the ions that make up the perovskite structure as well as their multiple combinations. Interestingly, recent high-efficiency PV devices using HOIPs with substantially improved long-term stability have used combinations of different ionic compositions. The structural dynamics of these systems are unique for semiconducting materials and are currently argued to be central to HOIPs stability and charge-transport properties. Here, we studied the impact of ionic composition on phonon speeds of HOIPs from Brillouin spectroscopy experiments and density functional theory calculations for FAPbBr$_3$, MAPbBr$_3$, MAPbCl$_3$, and the mixed halide MAPbBr$_{1.25}$Cl$_{1.75}$. Our results show that the acoustic phonon speeds can be strongly modified by ionic composition, which we explain by analysing the lead-halide sublattice in detail. The vibrational properties of HOIPs are therefore tuneable by using targeted ionic compositions in the perovskite structure. This tuning can be rationalized with non-trivial effects, for example, considering the influence of the shape and dipole moment of organic cations. This has an important implication to further improvements in the stability and charge-transport properties of these systems.

Lead-halide perovskites are promising materials for opto-electronic applications. Recent reports indicated that their mechanical and electronic properties are strongly affected by the lattice vibrations. Herein we report far-infrared spectroscopy measurements of CH$_{3}$NH$_{3}$Pb(I/Br/Cl)$_{3}$ thin films and single crystals at room temperature and a detailed quantitative analysis of the spectra. We find strong broadening and anharmonicity of the lattice vibrations for all three halide perovskites, which indicates dynamic disorder of the lead-halide cage at room temperature. We determine the frequencies of the transversal and longitudinal optical phonons, and use them to calculate, via appropriate models, the static dielectric constants, polaron masses, electron-phonon coupling constants, and upper limits for the phonon-scattering limited charge carrier mobilities. Within the limitations of the model used, we can place an upper limit of 200$\,$cm$^{2}$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ for the room temperature charge carrier mobility in MAPbI$_{3}$ single crystals. Our findings are important for the basic understanding of charge transport processes and mechanical properties in metal halide perovskites.

Hysteresis in the current-voltage characteristics of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite-based solar cells is one of the fundamental aspects of these cells that we do not understand well. One possible cause, suggested for the hysteresis, is polarization of the perovskite layer under applied voltage and illumination bias, due to ion migration within the perovskite. To study this problem systemically current-voltage characteristics of both regular (light incident through the electron conducting contact) and so-called inverted (light incident through the hole conducting contact) perovskite cells were studied at different temperatures and scan rates. We explain our results by assuming that the effects of scan rate and temperature on hysteresis are strongly correlated to ion migration within the device, with the rate-determining step being ion migration at/across the interfaces of the perovskite layer with the contact materials. By correlating between the scan rate with the measurement temperature we show that the inverted and regular cells operate in different hysteresis regimes, with different activation energies of 0.28+-0.04 eV and 0.59+-0.09 eV, respectively. We suggest that the differences, observed between the two architectures are due to different rates of ion migration close to the interfaces, and conclude that the diffusion coefficient of migrating ions in the inverted cells is 3 orders of magnitude higher than in the regular cells, leading to different accumulation rates of ions near the interfaces. Analysis of VOC as a function of temperature shows that the main recombination mechanism is trap-assisted (Shockley-Read Hall, SRH) in the space charge region, similar to what is the case for other thin film inorganic solar cells., Comment: 47 pages including supplementary information

The soft character of organic materials leads to strong coupling between molecular nuclear and electronic dynamics. This coupling opens the way to control charge transport in organic electronic devices by inducing molecular vibrational motions. However, despite encouraging theoretical predictions, experimental realization of such control has remained elusive. Here we demonstrate experimentally that photoconductivity in a model organic optoelectronic device can be controlled by the selective excitation of molecular vibrations. Using an ultrafast infrared laser source to create a coherent superposition of vibrational motions in a pentacene/C60 photoresistor, we observe that excitation of certain modes in the 1500-1700 cm$^{-1}$ region leads to photocurrent enhancement. Excited vibrations affect predominantly trapped carriers. The effect depends on the nature of the vibration and its mode-specific character can be well described by the vibrational modulation of intermolecular electronic couplings. Vibrational control thus presents a new tool for studying electron-phonon coupling and charge dynamics in (bio)molecular materials.

For small organic conjugated molecules the exciton binding energy can be calculated treating molecules as conductor, and is given by a simple relation BE \approx e2/(4{\pi}{\epsilon}0{\epsilon}R), where {\epsilon} is the dielectric constant and R is the equivalent radius of the molecule. However, if the molecule deviates from spherical shape, a minor correction factor should be added.
