Search

The reconstruction of charged particle trajectories in tracking detectors is a key problem in the analysis of experimental data for high-energy and nuclear physics. The amount of data in modern experiments is so large that classical tracking methods, such as the Kalman filter, cannot process them fast enough. To solve this problem, we developed two neural network algorithms based on deep learning architectures for track recognition in pixel and strip-based particle detectors. These are TrackNETv3 for local (track by track) and RDGraphNet for global (all tracks in an event) tracking. These algorithms were tested using the GEM tracker of the BM@N experiment at JINR (Dubna) and the cylindrical GEM inner tracker of the BESIII experiment at IHEP CAS (Beijing). The RDGraphNet model, based on a reverse directed graph, showed encouraging results: 95% recall and 74% precision for track finding. The TrackNETv3 model demonstrated a recall value of 95% and 76% precision. This result can be improved after further model optimization.

The SPD (Spin Physics Detector) is a planned spin physics experiment in the second interaction point of the NICA collider that is under construction at JINR. The main goal of the experiment is the test of basic of the QCD via the study of the polarized structure of the nucleon and spin-related phenomena in the collision of longitudinally and transversely polarized protons and deuterons at the center-of-mass energy up to 27 GeV and luminosity up to $10^{32}$ 1/(cm$^2$ s). The data rate at the maximum design luminosity is expected to reach 0.2 Tbit/s. Current approaches to SPD computing and offline software will be presented. Particle tracking is a fundamental part of the event analysis in high energy and nuclear physics. Events multiplicity increases each year along with the drastic growth of the experimental data which modern HENP detectors produce, so the classical tracking algorithms such as the well-known Kalman filter cannot satisfy speed and scaling requirements. At the same time, breakthroughs in the study of deep learning open an opportunity for the application of high-performance deep neural networks for solving tracking problems in a dense environment of experiments with heavy ions. However, there are no well-documented software libraries for deep learning track reconstruction yet. We introduce Ariadne, the first open-source library for particle tracking based on the PyTorch deep learning framework. The goal of our library is to provide a simple interface that allows one to prepare train and test datasets and to train and evaluate one of the deep tracking models implemented in the library on the data from your specific experiment. The user experience is greatly facilitated because of the system of gin-configurations. The modular structure of the library and abstract classes let the user develop his data processing pipeline and deep tracking model easily. The study of hexagonal silicon polytypes attracts special attention due to their unique physical properties compared to the traditional cubic phase of Si. Thus, for some hexagonal phases, a significant improvement in the emission properties has been demonstrated. In this work, the luminescent properties of SiO2/Si structures irradiated with Kr+ ions at different doses and annealed at 800 {\deg}C have been systematically investigated. For such structures, a photoluminescence line at ~ 1240 nm is observed and associated with the formation of hexagonal 9R-Si phase inclusions. It is found that the variation in the thickness of oxide film and the relative position of ion distribution profile and film / substrate interface leads to a regular change in the luminescence intensity. The nature of the observed dependencies is discussed as related to the interplay between the desirable 3C-Si -> 9R-Si structural transition and generation of nonradiative defects. The revealed regularities suggest optimal ion irradiation conditions for synthesis of optically active 9R-Si phase in diamond-like silicon.

Gallium oxide with a corundum structure ({\alpha}-Ga2O3) has recently attracted great attention in view of electronic and photonic applications due to its unique properties including a wide band gap exceeding that of the most stable beta phase (\b{eta}-Ga2O3). However, the lower thermal stability of the {\alpha}-phase at ambient conditions in comparison with the \b{eta}-phase requires careful investigation of its resistance to other external influences such as ion irradiation, ion doping, etc. In this work, the structural changes under the action of Al+ ion irradiation have been investigated for a polymorphic gallium oxide layers grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy on c-plane sapphire and consisting predominantly of {\alpha}-phase with inclusions of {\alpha}(\k{appa})-phase. It is established by the X-ray diffraction technique that inclusions of {\alpha}(\k{appa})-phase in the irradiated layer undergo the expansion along the normal to the substrate surface, while there is no a noticeable deformation for the {\alpha}-phase. This speaks in favor of the different radiation tolerance of various Ga2O3 polymorphs, especially the higher radiation tolerance of the {\alpha}-phase. This fact should be taken into account when utilizing ion implantation to modify gallium oxide properties in terms of development of efficient doping strategies.

Gallium oxide and in particular its thermodynamically stable \b{eta}-Ga2O3 phase is within the most exciting materials in research and technology nowadays due to its unique properties, such as an ultra-wide band gap and a very high breakdown electric field, finding a number of applications in electronics and optoelectronics. Ion implantation is a traditional technological method used in these fields, and its well-known advantages can contribute greatly to the rapid development of physics and technology of Ga2O3-based materials and devices. Here, the current status of ion beam implantation in \b{eta}-Ga2O3 is reviewed. The main attention is paid to the results of experimental study of damage under ion irradiation and the properties of Ga2O3 layers doped by ion implantation. The results of ab initio theoretical calculations of the impurities and defects parameters are briefly presented, and the physical principles of a number of analytical methods used to study implanted gallium oxide layers are highlighted. The use of ion implantation in the development of such Ga2O3-based devices as metal oxide field effect transistors, Schottky barrier diodes, and solar-blind UV detectors, is described together with systematical analysis of the achieved values of their characteristics. Finally, the most important challenges to be overcome in this field of science and technology are discussed.

Black-box optimization is one of the vital tasks in machine learning, since it approximates real-world conditions, in that we do not always know all the properties of a given system, up to knowing almost nothing but the results. This paper describes our approach to solving the black-box optimization challenge at NeurIPS 2020 through learning search space partition for local Bayesian optimization. We describe the task of the challenge as well as our algorithm for low budget optimization that we named \texttt{SPBOpt}. We optimize the hyper-parameters of our algorithm for the competition finals using multi-task Bayesian optimization on results from the first two evaluation settings. The methodical properties of the original difference method for the search of the anisotropy at the knee region of the primary cosmic radiation energy spectrum are analyzed. The main feature of the suggested method is a study of the difference in the EAS characteristics in different directions but not their intensity. It is shown that the method is stable to the random experimental errors and allows to separate the anomalies related to the laboratory coordinate system from the anomalies in the celestial coordinates. The method uses multiple scattering of the charge particles in the Galaxy magnetic fields to study the whole celestial sphere including the regions outside of the line of sight of the installation., Comment: 8 pages

We present preliminary results obtained by a novel difference method for the study of the nature of the knee in the energy spectrum of the primary cosmic radiation. We have applied this method to data from the GAMMA experiment in Armenia. The analysis provides evidence for the possible existence of a nearby source of primary cosmic rays in the Southern hemisphere., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

The motion of a projectile with horizontal initial velocity V0, moving under the action of the gravitational field and a drag force is studied analytically. As it is well known, the projectile reaches a terminal velocity Vterm. There is a curious result concerning the minimum speed Vmin; it turns out that the minimum velocity is lower than the terminal one if V0 > Vterm and is lower than the initial one if V0 < Vterm. These results show that the velocity is not a monotonous function. If the initial speed is not horizontal, there is an angle range where the velocity shows the same behavior mentioned previously. Out of that range, the volocity is a monotonous function. These results come out from numerical simulations.

The energy spectrum of the primary cosmic radiation in the energy range 1 - 100 PeV and the extensive air shower (EAS) characteristics obtained on the basis of the expanded data bank of the GAMMA experiment (Mt. Aragats, Armenia) are presented. With increased statistics we confirm our previous results on the energy spectrum. The spectral index above the knee is about -3.1, but at energies beyond 20 PeV a flattening of the spectrum is observed. The existence of the 'bump' at about 70 PeV is confirmed with a significance of more than 4{\sigma}. In the energy range of 10 - 100 PeV the shower age becomes energy independent and we observe a direct proportionality of the EAS size to the primary energy. This suggests an approximately constant depth of the EAS maximum in this energy range. This is evidence in favour of an increasing average mass of primary particles at energies above 20 PeV. The additional source scenario, which is a possible explanation of the 'bump' in the spectrum, also leads to the conclusion of increasing mass of the primary cosmic rays. The present status of the GAMMA facility consisting of an enlarged surface EAS array (116 of 1 m^2 scintillation detectors) and underground muon carpet (150 m^2 detectors) is described. The recent results on mass composition and energy spectrum at the energy region above the knee obtained on the basis of the GAMMA experimental data are presented. It is shown that the power law after the knee is not invariable like -3.1. The slope of the energy spectrum becomes more flat at E0>20 PeV. The strong irregularities of the energy spectrum at about 70-80 PeV are discussed in comparison with other experiments. We present an upper limit of galactic diffuse gamma-ray flux, measured with the GAMMA experiment at energy about 175 TeV. The results were obtained using selection of muon poor extensive air showers at mountain level (700 g/cm^2, Mt. Aragats, Armenia) for 5 GeV muon energy threshold. An upper limit for the differential flux at energy E=175+/-25 TeV is equal to (5.8-7.0)x10^-12 [erg m^2 s sr]^-1 for 95% confidence level., Comment: Submitted to the 31-th ICRC, Lodz, 2009

We present all-particle primary cosmic-ray energy spectrum in the 3-200 PeV energy range obtained by a multi-parametric event-by-event evaluation of the primary energy. The results are obtained on the basis of an expanded EAS data set detected at mountain level (700 g/cm^2) by the GAMMA experiment. The energy evaluation method has been developed using the EAS simulation with the SIBYLL interaction model taking into account the response of GAMMA detectors and reconstruction uncertainties of EAS parameters. Nearly unbiased (<5%) energy estimations regardless of a primary nuclear mass with an accuracy of about 15-10% in the 3-200 PeV energy range respectively are attained. An irregularity ('bump') in the spectrum is observed at primary energies of ~74 PeV. This bump exceeds a smooth power-law fit to the data by about 4 standard deviations. Not rejecting stochastic nature of the bump completely, we examined the systematic uncertainties of our methods and conclude that they cannot be responsible for the observed feature., Comment: Accepted by J.Phys.G: Nucl.Part.Phys

We describe a novel approach to the analysis of toxicogenomics data and elucidation of biological networks affected by drug treatments. In this method approximately 15,000 linear pathway modules were generated from manually assembled pathway maps from MetaCore (GeneGo, Inc.). Microarray expression data from livers of rat exposed to phenobarbital, mestranol and tamoxifen were mapped onto these modules. Using different analytical techniques we have identified sets of "differential" pathways featuring highly correlated expression among multiple repeats of the same treatment while showing strong anti-correlation across different treatments. Network modules distinguishing chemical treatments were re-assembled based on these pathways. Unlike traditional statistical and clustering procedures in expression profiling, our method takes into account both network connectivity and gene expression in the course of the analysis. We demonstrate that it enables identification of important cellular mechanisms involved in drug response that would have been missed by the analysis based on individual gene expression profiles., Comment: 28 pages, 3 figures and 3 tables

On the basis of the extensive air shower (EAS) data obtained by the GAMMA experiment, the energy spectra and elemental composition of the primary cosmic rays are derived in the 1-100 PeV energy range. The reconstruction of the primary energy spectra is carried out using an EAS inverse approach in the framework of the SIBYLL2.1 and QGSJET01 interaction models and the hypothesis of power-law primary energy spectra with rigidity-dependent knees. The energy spectra of primary H, He, O-like and Fe-like nuclei obtained with the SIBYLL interaction model agree with corresponding extrapolations of the balloon and satellite data to ~1 PeV energies. The energy spectra obtained from the QGSJET model show a predominantly proton composition in the knee region. The rigidity-dependent knee feature of the primary energy spectra for each interaction model is displayed at the following rigidities: ~2.5+/-0.2 PV (SIBYLL) and ~3.1-4.2 PV (QGSJET). We confirm the result obtained many years ago at Tien-Shan mountain station with the large 36-m2 lead calorimeter that in extensive air showers (EAS) with energies of few PeV the attenuation of core energy deposit in lead becomes slower than it could be predicted by modern codes. It is shown that this effect is connected with the appearance of the excess of abnormal cores with a large ionisation released in lower layers of the calorimeter and these abnormal EAS cores are most probably produced by high-energy muon groups. A few hypotheses of the excess of muon reach EAS cores are considered. To study the absorption of EAS hadrons and muons in a lead ionization calorimeter, the EAS development in the atmosphere was simulated in the framework of the CORSIKA+QGSJET code whereupon the passage of hadrons and muons through a lead calorimeter has been modeled with using the FLUKA transport code., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures
