Explaining outliers occurrence and mechanism of their occurrence can be extremely important in a variety of domains. Malfunctions, frauds, threats, in addition to being correctly identified, oftentimes need a valid explanation in order to effectively perform actionable counteracts. The ever more widespread use of sophisticated Machine Learning approach to identify anomalies make such explanations more challenging. We present the Decision Tree Outlier Regressor (DTOR), a technique for producing rule-based explanations for individual data points by estimating anomaly scores generated by an anomaly detection model. This is accomplished by first applying a Decision Tree Regressor, which computes the estimation score, and then extracting the relative path associated with the data point score. Our results demonstrate the robustness of DTOR even in datasets with a large number of features. Additionally, in contrast to other rule-based approaches, the generated rules are consistently satisfied by the points to be explained. Furthermore, our evaluation metrics indicate comparable performance to Anchors in outlier explanation tasks, with reduced execution time.

In this paper, we consider a quasi-linear Dirichlet system with possible competing $(p,q)$-Laplacians and convections. Due to the lack of ellipticity, monotonicity, and variational structure, the standard approaches to the existence of weak solutions cannot be adopted. Nevertheless, through an approximation procedure and a corollary of Brouwer's fixed point theorem we show that the problem admits a solution in a suitable sense.

The aim of this short paper is to show that some assumptions in [10] can be relaxed and even dropped when looking for weak solutions instead of strong ones. This improvement is a consequence of two results concerning gradient terms: an $L^\infty$ estimate, which exploits nonlinear potential theory, and a compactness result, based on the classical Riesz-Fr\'echet-Kolmogorov theorem.

The observation of energetic astronomical sources emitting very high-energy gamma-rays in the TeV spectral range (as e.g. supernova remnants or blazars) is mainly based on detecting the Cherenkov light induced by relativistic particles in the showers produced by the photon interaction with the Earth atmosphere. The ASTRI Mini-Array is an INAF-led project aimed observing such celestial objects in the 1 - 100 TeV energy range. It consists of an array of nine innovative imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes that are an evolution of the dual-mirror aplanatic ASTRI-Horn telescope operating at the INAF "M.C. Fracastoro" observing station (Serra La Nave, Mount Etna, Italy). The ASTRI Mini-Array is currently under construction at the Observatorio del Teide (Tenerife, Spain). In this paper, we present the compact (diameter 660mm, height 520mm, weight 73kg) ASTRI-Horn prototype Cherenkov Camera based on a modular multipixel Silicon Photon Multiplier (SiPM) detector, has been acquiring data since 2016 and allowing us to obtain both scientific data and essential lessons. In this contribution, we report the main features of the camera and its evolution toward the new Cherenkov camera, which will be installed on each ASTRI Mini-Array telescope to cover an unprecedented field of view of 10.5{\deg}., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 2022 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium (NSS), Medical Imaging Conference (MIC) and Room Temperature Semiconductor Detector (RTSD) Conference in press by IEEE Xplore

The ASTRI Mini-Array (MA) is an INAF project to build and operate a facility to study astronomical sources emitting at very high-energy in the TeV spectral band. The ASTRI MA consists of a group of nine innovative Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The telescopes will be installed at the Teide Astronomical Observatory of the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) on the basis of a host agreement with INAF. Thanks to its expected overall performance, better than those of current Cherenkov telescopes' arrays for energies above \sim 5 TeV and up to 100 TeV and beyond, the ASTRI MA will represent an important instrument to perform deep observations of the Galactic and extra-Galactic sky at these energies., Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures

We study the performance -- and specifically the rate at which the error probability converges to zero -- of Machine Learning (ML) classification techniques. Leveraging the theory of large deviations, we provide the mathematical conditions for a ML classifier to exhibit error probabilities that vanish exponentially, say $\sim \exp\left(-n\,I + o(n) \right)$, where $n$ is the number of informative observations available for testing (or another relevant parameter, such as the size of the target in an image) and $I$ is the error rate. Such conditions depend on the Fenchel-Legendre transform of the cumulant-generating function of the Data-Driven Decision Function (D3F, i.e., what is thresholded before the final binary decision is made) learned in the training phase. As such, the D3F and, consequently, the related error rate $I$, depend on the given training set, which is assumed of finite size. Interestingly, these conditions can be verified and tested numerically exploiting the available dataset, or a synthetic dataset, generated according to the available information on the underlying statistical model. In other words, the classification error probability convergence to zero and its rate can be computed on a portion of the dataset available for training. Coherently with the large deviations theory, we can also establish the convergence, for $n$ large enough, of the normalized D3F statistic to a Gaussian distribution. This property is exploited to set a desired asymptotic false alarm probability, which empirically turns out to be accurate even for quite realistic values of $n$. Furthermore, approximate error probability curves $\sim \zeta_n \exp\left(-n\,I \right)$ are provided, thanks to the refined asymptotic derivation (often referred to as exact asymptotics), where $\zeta_n$ represents the most representative sub-exponential terms of the error probabilities.

Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Signal Processing - Abstract
Structured covariance matrix estimation in the presence of missing data is addressed in this paper with emphasis on radar signal processing applications. After a motivation of the study, the array model is specified and the problem of computing the maximum likelihood estimate of a structured covariance matrix is formulated. A general procedure to optimize the observed-data likelihood function is developed resorting to the expectation-maximization algorithm. The corresponding convergence properties are thoroughly established and the rate of convergence is analyzed. The estimation technique is contextualized for two practically relevant radar problems: beamforming and detection of the number of sources. In the former case an adaptive beamformer leveraging the EM-based estimator is presented; in the latter, detection techniques generalizing the classic Akaike information criterion, minimum description length, and Hannan-Quinn information criterion, are introduced. Numerical results are finally presented to corroborate the theoretical study.

The COVID-19 pandemic has, worldwide and up to December 2020, caused over 1.7 million deaths, and put the world's most advanced healthcare systems under heavy stress. In many countries, drastic restrictive measures adopted by political authorities, such as national lockdowns, have not prevented the outbreak of new pandemic's waves. In this article, we propose an integrated detection-estimation-forecasting framework that, using publicly available data, is designed to: (i) learn relevant features of the pandemic (e.g., the infection rate); (ii) detect as quickly as possible the onset (or the termination) of an exponential growth of the contagion; and (iii) reliably forecast the pandemic evolution. The proposed solution is validated by analyzing the COVID-19 second and third waves in the USA., Comment: Accepted to be published in IEEE Communications Magazine, feature topic "Networking Technologies to Combat the COVID-19 Pandemic"

This work focuses on the development of a new family of decision-making algorithms for adaptation and learning, which are specifically tailored to decision problems and are constructed by building up on first principles from decision theory. A key observation is that estimation and decision problems are structurally different and, therefore, algorithms that have proven successful for the former need not perform well when adjusted for decision problems. We propose a new scheme, referred to as BLLR (barrier log-likelihood ratio algorithm) and demonstrate its applicability to real-data from the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy. The results illustrate the ability of the design tool to track the different phases of the outbreak.

During the course of an epidemic, one of the most challenging tasks for authorities is to decide what kind of restrictive measures to introduce and when these should be enforced. In order to take informed decisions in a fully rational manner, the onset of a critical regime, characterized by an exponential growth of the contagion, must be identified as quickly as possible. Providing rigorous quantitative tools to detect such an onset represents an important contribution from the scientific community to proactively support the political decision makers. In this paper, leveraging the quickest detection theory, we propose a mathematical model of the COVID-19 pandemic evolution and develop decision tools to rapidly detect the passage from a controlled regime to a critical one. A new sequential test -- referred to as MAST (mean-agnostic sequential test) -- is presented, and demonstrated on publicly available COVID-19 infection data from different countries. Then, the performance of MAST is investigated for the second pandemic wave, showing an effective trade-off between average decision delay $\Delta$ and risk $R$, where $R$ is inversely proportional to the time required to declare the need to take unnecessary restrictive measures. Ideally, the decision mechanism should react as quick as possible for a given level of risk. We find that all the countries share the same behaviour in terms of quickest detection, specifically the risk scales exponentially with the delay, $R \sim \exp{(-\omega \Delta)}$, where $\omega$ depends on the specific nation. For a reasonably small risk level, say, one possibility in ten thousand (i.e., unmotivated implementation of countermeasures every 27 years, on the average), the proposed algorithm detects the onset of the critical regime with delay between a few days to three weeks, much earlier than when the exponential growth becomes evident.

The decision statistic can be cast in a recursive form and is particularly suited for on-line analysis. By back-testing our approach on publicly-available COVID-19 data we find reliable early warning of infection flare-ups, in fact sufficiently early that the tool may be of use to decision-makers on the timing of restrictive measures that may in the future need to be taken., Comment: Accepted to be published in IEEE Signal Processing Letters

Economics - General Economics - Abstract
To prevent the outbreak of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), many countries around the world went into lockdown and imposed unprecedented containment measures. These restrictions progressively produced changes to social behavior and global mobility patterns, evidently disrupting social and economic activities. Here, using maritime traffic data collected via a global network of AIS receivers, we analyze the effects that the COVID-19 pandemic and containment measures had on the shipping industry, which accounts alone for more than 80% of the world trade. We rely on multiple data-driven maritime mobility indexes to quantitatively assess ship mobility in a given unit of time. The mobility analysis here presented has a worldwide extent and is based on the computation of: CNM of all ships reporting their position and navigational status via AIS, number of active and idle ships, and fleet average speed. To highlight significant changes in shipping routes and operational patterns, we also compute and compare global and local density maps. We compare 2020 mobility levels to those of previous years assuming that an unchanged growth rate would have been achieved, if not for COVID-19. Following the outbreak, we find an unprecedented drop in maritime mobility, across all categories of commercial shipping. With few exceptions, a generally reduced activity is observable from March to June, when the most severe restrictions were in force. We quantify a variation of mobility between -5.62% and -13.77% for container ships, between +2.28% and -3.32% for dry bulk, between -0.22% and -9.27% for wet bulk, and between -19.57% and -42.77% for passenger traffic. This study is unprecedented for the uniqueness and completeness of the employed dataset, which comprises a trillion AIS messages broadcast worldwide by 50000 ships, a figure that closely parallels the documented size of the world merchant fleet.

We present an elementary proof of Fermat's Last Theorem. No ancillary results are used, not even the most basic ones. The proof directly leads to a contradiction of the Fermat equation in the set of integers., Comment: 10 pages, in Spanish. The paper contains some wrong identities. This invalidates its conclusion. More precisely, in page 3, after equation (6), it is affirmed that bk-3=j_{1d} and ak-2=x. What it actually holds is that bk-3 is a multiple of j_[1d} and ak-2 a multiple of x. This kind of incorrect arguments is repeated afterwards, in page 7 and at the beginning of page 8, and finally in page 10, after equation (20). In this way the statement is not correctly proved, and I apologise for this situation. So I request the article be removed from the arXiv, or if this is not possible, at least that the present comment of the author be displayed to the potential readers. Finally I say that I have tried to, but unfortunately I cannot fix the errors. Thank you

Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Signal Processing - Abstract
This paper studies the operation of multi-agent networks engaged in multi-task decision problems under the paradigm of simultaneous learning and adaptation. Two scenarios are considered: one in which a decision must be taken among multiple states of nature that are known but can vary over time and space, and another in which there exists a known "normal" state of nature and the task is to detect unpredictable and unknown deviations from it. In both cases the network learns from the past and adapts to changes in real time in a multi-task scenario with different clusters of agents addressing different decision problems. The system design takes care of challenging situations with clusters of complicated structure, and the performance assessment is conducted by computer simulations. A theoretical analysis is developed to obtain a statistical characterization of the agents' status at steady-state, under the simplifying assumption that clustering is made without errors. This provides approximate bounds for the steady-state decision performance of the agents. Insights are provided for deriving accurate performance prediction by exploiting the derived theoretical results.

We obtain a pair of nontrivial solutions for a class of concave-linear-convex type elliptic problems that are either critical or subcritical. The solutions we find are neither local minimizers nor of mountain pass type in general. They are higher critical points in the sense that they each have a higher critical group that is nontrivial. This fact is crucial for showing that our solutions are nontrivial. We also prove some intermediate results of independent interest on the localization and homotopy invariance of critical groups of functionals involving critical Sobolev exponents.

SPECT systems using pinhole apertures permit radiolabeled molecular distributions to be imaged in vivo in small animals. Nevertheless studying cardiovascular diseases by means of small animal models is very challenging. Specifically, submillimeter spatial resolution, good energy resolution and high sensitivity are required. We designed what we consider the "optimal" radionuclide detector system for this task. It should allow studying both detection of unstable atherosclerotic plaques and monitoring the effect of therapies. Using mice is particularly challenging in situations that require several intravenous injections of radiotracers, possibly for week or even months, in chronically ill animals. Thus, alternative routes of delivering the radiotracer in tail vein should be investigated. In this study we have performed preliminary measurements of detection of atherosclerotic plaques in genetically modified mice with high-resolution prototype detector. We have also evaluated the feasibility of assessing left ventricular perfusion by intraperitoneal delivering of MIBI-Tc in healthy mice., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures

Computer Science - Cryptography and Security - Abstract
The efficiency and service quality in a medical environment can be improved by using electronic documents (or e-docs) and digital signatures to speed up both doctors' activity and to provide in the same time easy retrieval and use of needed data without loosing convenience. Our proposed solution satisfies these needs by making use of the AIDA system and many cutting-edge techniques to build a digitalized management system. To be more specific, we present firstly the AIDA document exchange framework for the management (creation, search, storage) of e-docs expressed in XML format. The framework provides security services, like privacy, authorization, authentication and non-repudiation. We describe next the use of AIDA in a real world medical service, namely the creation of electronic medical records (e- MRs). Doctors can use mobile devices that embed a secure trustworthy environment defined also in AIDA for digitally signing the e-MRs. Technically speaking a handheld PC equipped with a smart-card reader and integrating What You See Is What You Sign (WYSIWYS) features will be used for viewing and signing the e-MRs. Furthermore the proposed system is easily integrated with the infrastructure (e.g., database system) already in use at hospital's administration site and allows easy handling and updating of data processed on the mobile devices. The use of web interface for the operations to be executed on the mobile device or for those executed on the remote part of the system makes the whole application homogeneous and easy to use., Comment: Paper in proceedings of IADIS International Conference WWW/Internet 2002 (ICWI 2002). arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1910.07945

We report on the first detection of very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the Crab Nebula by a Cherenkov telescope in dual-mirror Schwarzschild-Couder (SC) configuration. The result has been achieved by means of the 4 m size ASTRI-Horn telescope, operated on Mt. Etna (Italy) and developed in the context of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory preparatory phase. The dual-mirror SC design is aplanatic and characterized by a small plate scale, allowing us to implement large field of view cameras with small-size pixel sensors and a high compactness. The curved focal plane of the ASTRI camera is covered by silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs), managed by an unconventional front-end electronics based on a customized peak-sensing detector mode. The system includes internal and external calibration systems, hardware and software for control and acquisition, and the complete data archiving and processing chain. The observations of the Crab Nebula were carried out in December 2018, during the telescope verification phase, for a total observation time (after data selection) of 24.4 h, equally divided into on- and off-axis source exposure. The camera system was still under commissioning and its functionality was not yet completely exploited. Furthermore, due to recent eruptions of the Etna Volcano, the mirror reflection efficiency was reduced. Nevertheless, the observations led to the detection of the source with a statistical significance of 5.4 sigma above an energy threshold of ~3 TeV. This result provides an important step towards the use of dual-mirror systems in Cherenkov gamma-ray astronomy. A pathfinder mini-array based on nine large field-of-view ASTRI-like telescopes is under implementation., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Dedicated studies were performed to verify the feasibility of the calibration through muons on the relatively small size of the primary mirror (~4 m diameter), as in the case of larger Cherenkov telescopes. A number of tests were performed using simulations of the atmospheric showers with the CORSIKA package and of the telescope response with a dedicated simulator. In this contribution we present a preliminary analysis of muon events detected by ASTRI-Horn during the regular scientific data taking performed in December 2018 and March 2019. These muon events validate the results obtained with the simulations and definitively confirm the feasibility of calibrating the ASTRI-Horn SST telescope with muons., Comment: Proceedings of the 36th International Cosmic Ray Conference, Madison, Wisconsin, USA, 24 July-1 August 2019

Mathematics - Analysis of PDEs - Abstract
The general stability problem of truncations for a family of functions concentrating mass at the origin is described and a concrete example in the framework of entire optimizers for the fractional Hardy-Sobolev inequality is given. In this short note we point out some quantitative stability estimates, useful in dealing with critical $p-q$ fractional equations., Comment: 9 pages, comments welcome!

Mathematics - Analysis of PDEs ,35J20, 35J60 - Abstract
A homogeneous Dirichlet problem with $(p,q)$-Laplace differential operator and reaction given by a parametric $p$-convex term plus a $q$-concave one is investigated. A bifurcation-type result, describing changes in the set of positive solutions as the parameter $\lambda>0$ varies, is proven. Since for every admissible $\lambda$ the problem has a smallest positive solution $\bar u_{\lambda}$, both monotonicity and continuity of the map $ \lambda \mapsto \bar u_{\lambda}$ are studied., Comment: 12 pages, comments are welcome

Computer Science - Information Theory - Abstract
Emerging applications of sensor networks for detection sometimes suggest that classical problems ought be revisited under new assumptions. This is the case of binary hypothesis testing with independent - but not necessarily identically distributed - observations under the two hypotheses, a formalism so orthodox that it is used as an opening example in many detection classes. However, let us insert a new element, and address an issue perhaps with impact on strategies to deal with "big data" applications: What would happen if the structure were streamlined such that data flowed freely throughout the system without provenance? How much information (for detection) is contained in the sample values, and how much in their labels? How should decision-making proceed in this case? The theoretical contribution of this work is to answer these questions by establishing the fundamental limits, in terms of error exponents, of the aforementioned binary hypothesis test with unlabeled observations drawn from a finite alphabet. Then, we focus on practical algorithms. A low-complexity detector - called ULR - solves the detection problem without attempting to estimate the labels. A modified version of the auction algorithm is then considered, and two new greedy algorithms with ${\cal O}(n^2)$ worst-case complexity are presented, where $n$ is the number of observations. The detection operational characteristics of these detectors are investigated by computer experiments.

We study "active" decision making over sensor networks where the sensors' sequential probing actions are actively chosen by continuously learning from past observations. We consider two network settings: with and without central coordination. In the first case, the network nodes interact with each other through a central entity, which plays the role of a fusion center. In the second case, the network nodes interact in a fully distributed fashion. In both of these scenarios, we propose sequential and adaptive hypothesis tests extending the classic Chernoff test. We compare the performance of the proposed tests to the optimal sequential test. In the presence of a fusion center, our test achieves the same asymptotic optimality of the Chernoff test, minimizing the risk, expressed by the expected cost required to reach a decision plus the expected cost of making a wrong decision, when the observation cost per unit time tends to zero. The test is also asymptotically optimal in the higher moments of the time required to reach a decision. Additionally, the test is parsimonious in terms of communications, and the expected number of channel uses per network node tends to a small constant. In the distributed setup, our test achieves the same asymptotic optimality of Chernoff's test, up to a multiplicative constant in terms of both risk and the higher moments of the decision time. Additionally, the test is parsimonious in terms of communications in comparison to state-of-the-art schemes proposed in the literature. The analysis of these tests is also extended to account for message quantization and communication over channels with random erasures., Comment: A part of this work has been accepted in ISIT 2018 and CDC 2018; Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information Theory

The mine detection in an unexplored area is an optimization problem where multiple mines, randomly distributed throughout an area, need to be discovered and disarmed in a minimum amount of time. We propose a strategy to explore an unknown area, using a stigmergy approach based on ants behavior, and a novel swarm based protocol to recruit and coordinate robots for disarming the mines cooperatively. Simulation tests are presented to show the effectiveness of our proposed Ant-based Task Robot Coordination (ATRC) with only the exploration task and with both exploration and recruiting strategies. Multiple minimization objectives have been considered: the robots' recruiting time and the overall area exploration time. We discuss, through simulation, different cases under different network and field conditions, performed by the robots. The results have shown that the proposed decentralized approaches enable the swarm of robots to perform cooperative tasks intelligently without any central control., Comment: Soft Computing, 2017

Computer Science - Multiagent Systems - Abstract
This work studies the operation of multi-agent networks engaged in binary decision tasks, and derives performance expressions and performance operating curves under challenging conditions with some revealing insights. One of the main challenges in the analysis is that agents are only allowed to exchange one-bit messages, and the information at each agent therefore consists of both continuous and discrete components. Due to this mixed nature, the steady-state distribution of the state of each agent cannot be inferred from direct application of central limit arguments. Instead, the behavior of the continuous component is characterized in integral form by using a log-characteristic function, while the behavior of the discrete component is characterized by means of an asymmetric Bernoulli convolution. By exploiting these results, the article derives reliable approximate performance expressions for the network nodes that match well with the simulated results for a wide range of system parameters. The results also reveal an important interplay between continuous adaptation under constant step-size learning and the binary nature of the messages exchanged with neighbors., Comment: To appear in IEEE Trans. on Information Theory

Computer Science - Information Theory - Abstract
Signal amplitude estimation and detection from unlabeled quantized binary samples are studied, assuming that the order of the time indexes is completely unknown. First, maximum likelihood (ML) estimators are utilized to estimate both the permutation matrix and unknown signal amplitude under arbitrary, but known signal shape and quantizer thresholds. Sufficient conditions are provided under which an ML estimator can be found in polynomial time and an alternating maximization algorithm is proposed to solve the general problem via good initial estimates. In addition, the statistical identifiability of the model is studied. Furthermore, the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) detector is adopted to detect the presence of signal. In addition, an accurate approximation to the probability of successful permutation matrix recovery is derived, and explicit expressions are provided to reveal the relationship between the number of signal samples and the number of quantizers. Finally, numerical simulations are performed to verify the theoretical results.

Mathematics - Analysis of PDEs - Abstract
A short account of recent existence and multiplicity theorems on the Dirichlet problem for an elliptic equation with $(p,q)$-Laplacian in a bounded domain is performed. Both eigenvalue problems and different types of perturbation terms are briefly discussed. Special attention is paid to possibly coercive, resonant, subcritical, critical, or asymmetric right-hand sides., Comment: Comments welcome

Mathematics - Analysis of PDEs - Abstract
A Dirichlet problem driven by the $(p,q)$-Laplace operator and an asymmetric concave reaction with positive parameter is investigated. Four nontrivial smooth solutions (two positive, one negative, and the remaining nodal) are obtained once the parameter turns out to be sufficiently small. Under a oddness condition near the origin for the perturbation, a whole sequence of sign-changing solutions, which converges to zero, is produced., Comment: Comments welcome

Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics - Abstract
ASTRI SST-2M is one of the prototypes of the small size class of telescopes proposed for the Cherenkov Telescope Array. Its optical design is based on a dual-mirror Schwarzschild-Couder configuration, and the camera is composed by a matrix of monolithic multipixel silicon photomultipliers managed by ad-hoc tailored front-end electronics. This paper describes the procedures for the gain calibration on the ASTRI SST-2M. Since the SiPM gain depends on the operative voltage and the temperature, we adjust the operative voltages for all sensors to have equal gains at a reference temperature. We then correct gain variations caused by temperature changes by adjusting the operating voltage of each sensor. For that purpose the SiPM gain dependence on operating voltage and on temperature have been measured. In addition, we present the calibration procedures and the results of the experimental measurements to evaluate, for each pixel, the parameters necessary to make the trigger uniform over the whole focal plane., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, 1 table

We consider the optimizers $u$ in the Hardy-Sobolev inequality for the space $\dot{W}^{s,p}({\mathbb R}^N)$ with order of differentiability $s\in ]0,1[$. After proving existence through concentration-compactness, we derive the pointwise asymptotic $u(x)\simeq |x|^{-\frac{N-ps}{p-1}}$ for large $|x|$ and the summability estimate $u\in \dot{W}^{s,\gamma}({\mathbb R}^N)$ for all $\gamma>\frac{N(p-1)}{N-s}$. These estimates are optimal in the limit $s\to 1^-$, in which case optimizers are explicitly known., Comment: Extended and corrected version. Comments welcome

We prove the existence of $N$ distinct pairs of nontrivial solutions for critical $p$-Laplacian problems in ${\mathbb R}^N$, as well as in bounded domains. To overcome the difficulties arising from the lack of compactness, we use a recent global compactness result of Mercuri and Willem.

The potential of compressed sensing for obtaining sparse time-frequency representations for gravitational wave data analysis is illustrated by comparison with existing methods, as regards i) shedding light on the fine structure of noise transients (glitches) in preparation of their classification, and ii) boosting the performance of waveform consistency tests in the detection of unmodeled transient gravitational wave signals using a network of detectors affected by unmodeled noise transient, Comment: 16 pages + 17 figures

We consider distributed detection problems over adaptive networks, where dispersed agents learn continually from streaming data by means of local interactions. The simultaneous requirements of adaptation and cooperation are achieved by employing diffusion algorithms with constant step-size {\mu}. In [1], [2] some main features of adaptive distributed detection were revealed. By resorting to large deviations analysis, it was established that the Type-I and Type-II error probabilities of all agents vanish exponentially as functions of 1/{\mu}, and that all agents share the same Type-I and Type-II error exponents. However, numerical evidences presented in [1], [2] showed that the theory of large deviations does not capture the fundamental impact of network connectivity on performance, and that additional tools and efforts are required to obtain accurate predictions for the error probabilities. This work addresses these open issues and extends the results of [1], [2] in several directions. By conducting a refined asymptotic analysis based on the mathematical framework of exact asymptotics, we arrive at a revealing and powerful understanding of the universal behavior of distributed detection over adaptive networks: as functions of 1/{\mu}, the error (log-)probability curves corresponding to different agents stay nearly-parallel to each other (as already discovered in [1], [2]), however, these curves are ordered following a criterion reflecting the degree of connectivity of each agent. Depending on the combination weights, the more connected an agent is, the lower its error probability curve will be. Interesting and somehow unexpected behaviors emerge, in terms of the interplay between the network topology, the combination weights, and the inference performance. The lesson learned is that connectivity matters., Comment: submitted for publication

The existence of two nontrivial smooth solutions to a semilinear Robin problem with indefinite unbounded potential and asymmetric nonlinearity $f$ is established. Both crossing and resonance are allowed. A third nonzero solution exists provided $f$ is $C^1$. Proofs exploit variational methods, truncation techniques, and Morse theory., Comment: 29 pages

The Cherenkov Imaging Telescope Integrated Read Out Chip, CITIROC, is a chip adopted as the front-end of the camera at the focal plane of the imaging Cherenkov ASTRI dual-mirror small size telescope (ASTRI SST-2M) prototype. This paper presents the results of the measurements performed to characterize CITIROC tailored for the ASTRI SST-2M focal plane requirements. In particular, we investigated the trigger linearity and efficiency, as a function of the pulse amplitude. Moreover, we tested its response by performing a set of measurements using a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) in dark conditions and under light pulse illumination. The CITIROC output signal is found to vary linearly as a function of the input pulse amplitude. Our results show that it is suitable for the ASTRI SST-2M camera., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures, 1 table

The existence of three smooth solutions, one negative, one positive, and one nodal, to a homogeneous Robin problem with $p$-Laplacian and Carath\'eodory reaction is established. No sub-critical growth condition is taken on. Proofs exploit variational as well as truncation techniques. The case $p=2$ is separately examined, obtaining a further nodal solution via Morse's theory.

We obtain nontrivial solutions of a critical $(p,q)$-Laplacian problem in a bounded domain. In addition to the usual difficulty of the loss of compactness associated with problems involving critical Sobolev exponents, this problem lacks a direct sum decomposition suitable for applying the classical linking theorem. We show that every Palais-Smale sequence at a level below a certain energy threshold admits a subsequence that converges weakly to a nontrivial critical point of the variational functional. Then we prove an abstract critical point theorem based on a cohomological index and use it to construct a minimax level below this threshold., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1406.6242

Mathematics - Probability - Abstract
The L\'evy-Ciesielski Construction of Brownian motion is used to determine non-asymptotic estimates for the maximal deviation of increments of a Brownian motion process $(W_{t})_{t\in \left[ 0,T\right] }$ normalized by the global modulus function, for all positive $\varepsilon $ and $\delta $. Additionally, uniform results over $\delta $ are obtained. Using the same method, non-asymptotic estimates for the distribution function for the standard Brownian motion normalized by its local modulus of continuity are obtained. Similar results for the truncated Brownian motion are provided and play a crucial role in establishing the results for the standard Brownian motion case.
