Automatic music transcription (AMT) for musical performances is a long standing problem in the field of Music Information Retrieval (MIR). Visual piano transcription (VPT) is a multimodal subproblem of AMT which focuses on extracting a symbolic representation of a piano performance from visual information only (e.g., from a top-down video of the piano keyboard). Inspired by the success of Transformers for audio-based AMT, as well as their recent successes in other computer vision tasks, in this paper we present a Transformer based architecture for VPT. The proposed VPT system combines a piano bounding box detection model with an onset and pitch detection model, allowing our system to perform well in more naturalistic conditions like imperfect image crops around the piano and slightly tilted images., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

We prove that Floer theory induces a filtration by ideals on equivariant quantum cohomology of symplectic manifolds equipped with a $\mathbb{C}^*$-action. In particular, this gives rise to Hilbert-Poincar\'e polynomials on ordinary cohomology that depend on Floer theory. En route, the paper develops structural properties of filtrations on three versions of equivariant Floer cohomology. We classify equivariant $\mathbb{C}^*$-actions on moduli spaces of Higgs bundles corresponding to the Painlev\'e equations. We deduce the Floer-theoretic filtrations on the cohomology of these spaces, introduced by Ritter and the second author in arXiv:2304.13026. Filtration is then compared with the $``P=W"$ and the filtration obtained by multiplicities of the irreducible components of the nilpotent cone, for all the 2-dimensional Higgs moduli., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

Almost all problems in applied mathematics, including the analysis of dynamical systems, deal with spaces of real-valued functions on Euclidean domains in their formulation and solution. In this paper, we describe the the tool Ariadne, which provides a rigorous calculus for working with Euclidean functions. We first introduce the Ariadne framework, which is based on a clean separation of objects as providing exact, effective, validated and approximate information. We then discuss the function calculus as implemented in \Ariadne, including polynomial function models which are the fundamental class for concrete computations. We then consider solution of some core problems of functional analysis, namely solution of algebraic equations and differential equations, and briefly discuss their use for the analysis of hybrid systems. We will give examples of C++ and Python code for performing the various calculations. Finally, we will discuss progress on extensions, including improvements to the function calculus and extensions to more complicated classes of system.

Using Morse-Bott-Floer spectral sequences, we describe a filtration by ideals on quantum cohomology for symplectic manifolds with a Hamiltonian $S^1$-action that extends to a pseudoholomorphic $\mathbb{C}^*$-action. These spaces include all Conical Symplectic Resolutions, in particular all Quiver Varieties. Our Morse-Bott-Floer spectral sequences give explicit descriptions of birth-death phenomena of the barcode of the persistence module associated to the $\mathbb{C}^*$-action, defined in our earlier paper. This paper contains the foundational work to rigorously construct a filtration on Floer complexes, announced in that earlier paper. We also include a substantial appendix on Morse-Bott-Floer theory, where a large part of the technical difficulties of the paper are dealt with. We compute a plethora of explicit examples, each highlighting various features, for Springer resolutions, ADE resolutions, and several Slodowy varieties of type A. We construct a filtration by ideals on quantum cohomology for symplectic manifolds with a Hamiltonian $S^1$-action that extends to a pseudoholomorphic $\mathbb{C}^*$-action. These spaces include all Conical Symplectic Resolutions, in particular all Quiver Varieties. In particular, we obtain a family of filtrations on singular cohomology for any Conical Symplectic Resolution, that is sensitive to the choice of $\mathbb{C}^*$-action. The symplectic form is rarely exact at infinity for these spaces, so substantial foundational work is carried out to rigorously define Floer theory, in particular symplectic cohomology. Using Floer theory, we construct a periodic persistence module, giving rise to a graded periodic barcode associated to the $\mathbb{C}^*$-action. This encodes birth-death phenomena of Floer invariants. Our filtrations can be viewed as a Floer-theoretic analogue of Atiyah-Bott filtrations, arising from stratifying a manifold by gradient flowlines of a Morse-Bott function, but they are distinct from those and they can detect non-topological properties of the quantum product., Comment: 72 pages, 4 figures. We report the evolution of the electronic structure at the surface of the layered perovskite Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ under large in-plane uniaxial compression, leading to anisotropic $B_{1g}$ strains of ${\varepsilon_{xx}-\varepsilon_{yy}=-0.9\pm0.1\%}$. From angle-resolved photoemission, we show how this drives a sequence of Lifshitz transitions, reshaping the low-energy electronic structure and the rich spectrum of van Hove singularities that the surface layer of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ hosts. From comparison to tight-binding modelling, we find that the strain is accommodated predominantly by bond-length changes rather than modifications of octahedral tilt and rotation angles. Our study sheds new light on the nature of structural distortions at oxide surfaces, and how targeted control of these can be used to tune density of states singularities to the Fermi level, in turn paving the way to the possible realisation of rich collective states at the Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ surface.

We obtain families of non-isotopic closed exact Lagrangian submanifolds in quasi-projective holomorphic symplectic manifolds that admit contracting $\mathbb{C}^*$-actions. We show that the Floer cohomologies of these Lagrangians are topological in nature, recovering the ordinary cohomologies of their intersection. Moreover, by using these Lagrangians and a version of Carrell-Goresky's integral decomposition theorem, we obtain degree-wise lower bounds on the symplectic cohomology of these spaces., Comment: 46 pages

This article introduces Figaro, an algorithm for computing the upper-triangular matrix in the QR decomposition of the matrix defined by the natural join over relational data. Figaro's main novelty is that it pushes the QR decomposition past the join. This leads to several desirable properties. For acyclic joins, it takes time linear in the database size and independent of the join size. Its execution is equivalent to the application of a sequence of Givens rotations proportional to the join size. Its number of rounding errors relative to the classical QR decomposition algorithms is on par with the database size relative to the join output size. The QR decomposition lies at the core of many linear algebra computations including the singular value decomposition (SVD) and the principal component analysis (PCA). We show how Figaro can be used to compute the orthogonal matrix in the QR decomposition, the SVD and the PCA of the join output without the need to materialize the join output. A suite of experiments validate that Figaro can outperform both in runtime performance and numerical accuracy the LAPACK library Intel MKL by a factor proportional to the gap between the sizes of the join output and input.

We present 2,241 exoplanet candidates identified with data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) during its two-year prime mission. We list these candidates in the TESS Objects of Interest (TOI) Catalog, which includes both new planet candidates found by TESS and previously-known planets recovered by TESS observations. We describe the process used to identify TOIs and investigate the characteristics of the new planet candidates, and discuss some notable TESS planet discoveries. The TOI Catalog includes an unprecedented number of small planet candidates around nearby bright stars, which are well-suited for detailed follow-up observations. The TESS data products for the Prime Mission (Sectors 1-26), including the TOI Catalog, light curves, full-frame images, and target pixel files, are publicly available on the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes., Comment: 39 pages, 16 figures. The increasing sophistication of wind turbine design and control generates a need for high-quality data. Therefore, the relatively limited set of measured wind data may be extended with computer-generated surrogate data, e.g. to make reliable statistical studies of energy production and mechanical loads. This paper presents a data-driven, statistical model for the generation of realistic surrogate time series that is based on the phase-randomised Fourier transform. The proposed model simulates an ergodic, pseudo-random process that makes use of an iterative rank-reordering procedure to yield synthetic time series that possess the power spectral density of the target data and concurrently converges to the probability distribution of the target data with an arbitrary, user-defined precision. A comparison with two established data-driven modelling techniques for generating surrogate wind speeds is presented. The proposed model is tested under the same input conditions given in the test cases of the selected models, and its performance is investigated in terms of the agreement with the target statistical descriptors. Simulation results show that the proposed model can reproduce with high fidelity the statistical descriptors of the input datasets and is able to capture the nonstationary diurnal and seasonal variations of the wind speed.

Uncertainty is unavoidable in modeling dynamical systems and it may be represented mathematically by differential inclusions. In the past, we proposed an algorithm to compute validated solutions of differential inclusions; here we provide several theoretical improvements to the algorithm, including its extension to piecewise constant and sinusoidal approximations of uncertain inputs, updates on the affine approximation bounds and a generalized formula for the analytical error. The approach proposed is able to achieve higher order convergence with respect to the current state-of-the-art. We implemented the methodology in Ariadne, a library for the verification of continuous and hybrid systems. For evaluation purposes, we introduce ten systems from the literature, with varying degrees of nonlinearity, number of variables and uncertain inputs. Abrupt change detection based on the wavelet transform and threshold method is very effective in detecting the abrupt changes and hence segmenting the signals recorded during disturbances in the electrical power network. The wavelet method estimates the time-instants of the changes in the signal model parameters during the pre-fault condition, after initiation of fault, after circuit-breaker opening and auto-reclosure. Certain kinds of disturbance signals do not show distinct abrupt changes in the signal parameters. In those cases, the standard mother wavelets fail to achieve correct event-specific segmentations. A new adjustment technique to the standard Haar wavelet is proposed in this paper, by introducing 2n adjusting zeros in the Haar wavelet scaling filter, n being a positive integer. This technique is quite effective in segmenting those fault signals into pre- and post-fault segments, and it is an improvement over the standard mother wavelets for this application. This paper describes the application of the adaptive whitening filter and the wavelet transform used to detect the abrupt changes in the signals recorded during disturbances in the electrical power network in South Africa. Main focus has been to estimate exactly the time-instants of the changes in the signal model parameters during the pre-fault condition and following events like initiation of fault, circuit-breaker opening, auto-reclosure of the circuit-breakers. The key idea is to decompose the fault signals, de-noised using the adaptive whitening filter, into effective detailed and smoothed version using the multiresolution signal decomposition technique based on discrete wavelet transform. Then we apply the threshold method on the decomposed signals to estimate the change time-instants, segmenting the fault signals into the event-specific sections for further signal processing and analysis. We present a numerical method for rigorous over-approximation of a reachable set of differential inclusions. The method gives high-order error bounds for single step approximations and a uniform bound on the error over the finite time interval. We provide formulas for the local error based on Lipschitz constants and bounds on higher-order derivatives. The method is based on a Fliess-like expansion, and extends previous results by providing error estimates which are valid for all possible inputs.

Dynamics with choice is a generalization of discrete-time dynamics where instead of the same evolution operator at every time step there is a choice of operators to transform the current state of the system. This notion is new and interesting from the mathematical point of view. At the same time, many real life processes studied in chemical physics, engineering, biology and medicine, from autocatalytic reaction systems to switched systems to cellular biochemical processes to malaria transmission in urban environments, exhibit the properties described by dynamics with choice.
