The critical brain hypothesis posits that neural systems operate near a phase transition, optimising the transmission, storage, and processing of information. While scale invariance and non-Gaussian dynamics - hallmarks of criticality - have been observed in brain activity, a direct link between criticality and behavioural performance remains unexplored. Here, we use a phenomenological renormalisation group (PRG) approach to examine neuronal activity in the primary visual cortex of mice performing a visual recognition task. We show that non-trivial scaling in neuronal activity is associated with enhanced task performance, with pronounced scaling observed during successful task completion. When rewards were removed or non-natural stimuli presented, these scaling signatures diminished. These results suggest that critical dynamics in the brain may be crucial for optimising behavioural outcomes, offering new insights into the functional role of criticality in cortical processing.

This work proposes a novel approach for automatic verification and synthesis of infinite-state reactive programs with respect to ${CTL}^*$ specifications, based on translation to Existential Horn Clauses (EHCs). $CTL^*$ is a powerful temporal logic, which subsumes the temporal logics LTL and CTL, both widely used in specification, verification, and synthesis of complex systems. EHCs with its solver E-HSF, is an extension of Constrained Horn Clauses, which includes existential quantification as well as the power of handling well-foundedness. We develop the translation system \textit{Trans}, which given a verification problem consisting of a program $P$ and a specification $\phi$, builds a set of EHCs which is satisfiable iff $P$ satisfies $\phi$. We also develop a synthesis algorithm that given a program with holes in conditions and assignments, fills the holes so that the synthesized program satisfies the given $CTL^*$ specification. We prove that our verification and synthesis algorithms are both sound and relative complete. Finally, we present case studies to demonstrate the applicability of our algorithms for $CTL^*$ verification and synthesis.

Top sensitivity Ring Laser Gyroscopes based on a simple mechanical scheme, so called heterolithic, have shown to operate on a continuous basis; since the mirror positions are not fixed, unwanted signals can occur, and data selection is necessary. For this purpose, Fringe Contrast is very useful. It depends on output beams intensity, alignment, and polarization; the model of the alignment and polarization contributions to Contrast has been implemented, and tested on the GP2 prototype. Polarization changes are corrected by acting on the output beams with plates, in order to recombine linearly polarized light. Using such model, the GP2 prototype was characterized as for polarization of the beams, inside the cavity and at their interference, and for non-planarity; as a result, the interfering beams off-axis has also been measured.

Nowadays, Internet of Things platforms are being deployed in a wide range of application domains. Some of these include use cases with security requirements, where the data generated by an IoT node is the basis for making safety-critical or liability-critical decisions at system level. The challenge is to develop a solution for data exchange while proving and verifying the authenticity of the data from end-to-end. In line with this objective, this paper proposes a novel solution with the proper protocols to provide Trust in Data, making use of two Roots of Trust that are the IOTA Distributed Ledger Technology and the Trusted Platform Module. The paper presents the design of the proposed solution and discusses the key design aspects and relevant trade-offs. The paper concludes with a Proof-of-Concept implementation and an experimental evaluation to confirm its feasibility and to assess the achievable performance.

The local field potential (LFP) is as a measure of the combined activity of neurons within a region of brain tissue. While biophysical modeling schemes for LFP in cortical circuits are well established, there is a paramount lack of understanding regarding the LFP properties along the states assumed in cortical circuits over long periods. Here we use a symbolic information approach to determine the statistical complexity based on Jensen disequilibrium measure and Shannon entropy of LFP data recorded from the primary visual cortex (V1) of urethane-anesthetized rats and freely moving mice. Using these information quantifiers, we find consistent relations between LFP recordings and measures of cortical states at the neuronal level. More specifically, we show that LFP's statistical complexity is sensitive to cortical state (characterized by spiking variability), as well as to cortical layer. In addition, we apply these quantifiers to characterize behavioral states of freely moving mice, where we find indirect relations between such states and spiking variability.

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for an inverse sequence $S_0 \leftarrow S_1 \leftarrow \dots$ indexed by natural numbers to have ${\rm lim}^1S=0$. This condition can be treated as a transfinite version of the Mittag-Leffler condition. We consider inverse sequences in an arbitrary abelian category having a generator and satisfying Grothendieck axioms ${\rm (AB3)}$ and ${\rm (AB4^*)}.$ We also show that the class of inverse sequences $S$ such that ${\rm lim}\: S={\rm lim}^1 S=0$ is the least class of inverse sequences containing the trivial inverse sequence and closed with respect to small limits and a certain type of extensions.

The Snowmass report on rare processes and precision measurements recommended Mu2e-II and a next generation muon facility at Fermilab (Advanced Muon Facility) as priorities for the frontier. The Workshop on a future muon program at FNAL was held in March 2023 to discuss design studies for Mu2e-II, organizing efforts for the next generation muon facility, and identify synergies with other efforts (e.g., muon collider). Topics included high-power targetry, status of R&D for Mu2e-II, development of compressor rings, FFA and concepts for muon experiments (conversion, decays, muonium and other opportunities) at AMF. The study of local deformations is a hot topic in geodesy. Local rotations of the crust around the vertical axis can be caused by deformations. In the Gran Sasso area the ring laser gyroscope GINGERINO and the GNSS array are operative. One year of data of GINGERINO is compared with the ones from the GNSS stations, homogeneously selected around the position of GINGERINO, aiming at looking for rotational signals with period of days common to both systems. At that purpose the rotational component of the area circumscribed by the GNSS stations has been evaluated and compared with the GINGERINO data. The coherences between the signals show structures that even exceed 60$\%$ coherence over the 6-60 days period; this unprecedented analysis is validated by two different methods that evaluate the local rotation using the GNSS stations. The analysis reveals that the shared rotational signal's amplitude in both instruments is approximately $10^{-13} rad/s$, an order of magnitude lower than the amplitudes of the signals examined using the coherence method. The comparison of the ring laser data with GNSS antennas provides evidence of the validity of the ring laser data for very low frequency investigation, essential for fundamental physics test.

Large frame Ring laser gyroscopes, based on the Sagnac effect, are top sensitivity instrumentation to measure angular velocity with respect to the fixed stars. GINGER (Gyroscopes IN GEneral Relativity) project foresees the construction of an array of three large dimension ring laser gyroscopes, rigidly connected to the Earth. GINGER has the potentiality to measure general relativity effects and Lorentz Violation in the gravity sector, once a sensitivity of $10^{-9}$, or better, of the Earth rotation rate is obtained. Being attached to the Earth crust, the array will also provide useful data for geophysical investigation. For this purpose, it is at present under construction as part of the multi-components observatory called Underground Geophysics at Gran Sasso (UGSS). Sensitivity is the key point to determine the relevance of this instrument for fundamental science. Absolute angular rotation rate measurements with sensitivity better than prad/s would be beneficial for fundamental science investigations. On this regard, large frame Earth based ring laser gyroscopes are top instrumentation as far as bandwidth, long--term operation, and sensitivity are concerned. Here, we demonstrate that the GINGERINO active--ring laser upper limiting noise is close to $2 \times 10^{-15}$ rad/s for $\sim 2 \times 10^5$ s of integration time, as estimated by the Allan deviation evaluated in a differential measurement scheme. This is more than a factor 10 better than the theoretical prediction so far accounted for ideal ring lasers shot--noise with the two beams counter--propagating inside the cavity considered as two independent propagating modes. This feature is related to the peculiarity of real ring laser system dynamics that causes phase cross--talking among the two counter--propagating modes. We study the performance of an hot-electron bolometer (HEB) operating at THz frequencies based on superconducting niobium nitride films. We report on the voltage response of the detector over a large optical bandwidth carried out with different THz sources. We show that the impulse response of the fully packaged HEB at 7.5 K has a 3 dB cut-off around 2 GHz. Remarkably, detection capability is still observed above 30 GHz in an heterodyne beating experiment using a THz quantum cascade laser frequency comb. Additionally, the HEB sensitivity has been evaluated and an optical noise equivalent power NEP of 0.8 pW/sqrt(Hz) has been measured at 1 MHz.

In this paper, we outline the scientific objectives, the experimental layout, and the collaborations envisaged for the GINGER (Gyroscopes IN GEneral Relativity) project. The GINGER project brings together different scientific disciplines aiming at building an array of Ring Laser Gyroscopes (RLGs), exploiting the Sagnac effect, to measure continuously, with sensitivity better than picorad/ s, large bandwidth (ca. 1 kHz), and high dynamic range, the absolute angular rotation rate of the Earth. In the paper, we address the feasibility of the apparatus with respect to the ambitious specifications above, as well as prove how such an apparatus, which will be able to detect strong Earthquakes, very weak geodetic signals, as well as general relativity effects like Lense-Thirring and De Sitter, will help scientific advancements in Theoretical Physics, Geophysics, and Geodesy, among other scientific fields., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures

The absolute measurement of the Earth angular rotation rate with ground-based instruments becomes challenging if the 1 part in $10^9$ of precision has to be obtained. This threshold is important for fundamental physics and for geodesy, to investigate effects of General Relativity and Lorentz violation in the gravity sector and to provide the fast variation of the Earth rotation rate. High sensitivity Ring Laser Gyroscopes (RLG) are currently the only promising technique to achieve this task in the near future, but their precision has been so far limited by systematics related to the laser operation. In this paper we analyze two different sets of observations, each of them three days long. They were obtained from the G ring laser at the Geodetic Observatory Wettzell. The applied method has been developed for the GINGERINO ring laser in order to identify and extract the laser systematics. For the available data sets the residuals show mostly white noise behavior and the Allan deviation drops below 1 part in $10^9$ after an integration time of about $10^4$~s., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

This work demonstrates that a middle size ring laser gyroscope (RLG) can be a very sensitive and robust instrument for rotational seismology, even if it operates in a quite noisy environment. The RLG has a square cavity, $1.60\times 1.60$ m$^2$, and it lies in a plane orthogonal to the Earth rotational axis. The Fabry-Perot optical cavities along the diagonals of the square were accessed and their lengths were locked to a reference laser. Through a quite simple locking circuit, we were able to keep the sensor fully operative for 14 days. The obtained long term stability is of the order of 3~nanorad/s and the short term sensitivity close is to 2~nanorad/s$\cdot$Hz$^{-1/2}$. The Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM) specification is increasingly being adopted in digital pathology to promote data standardization and interoperability. Efficient conversion of proprietary file formats into the DICOM standard format is a key requirement for institutional adoption of DICOM, necessary to ensure compatibility with existing scanners, microscopes, and data archives. Here, we present a cloud computing architecture for DICOM conversion, leveraging an event-driven microservices framework hosted in a serverless computing environment in Google Cloud to enable efficient DICOM conversion at scales ranging from individual images to institutional-scale datasets. In our experiments, employing a microservices-based approach substantially reduced runtime to process a batch of images relative to parallel and serial processing. This work demonstrates the importance of designing scalable systems for enabling enterprise-level adoption of digital pathology workflows, and provides a blueprint for using a microservice architecture to enable efficient DICOM conversion.

Several studies with brain signals suggested that bottom-up and top-down influences are exerted through distinct frequency bands among visual cortical areas. It has been recently shown that theta and gamma rhythms subserve feedforward, whereas the feedback influence is dominated by the alpha-beta rhythm in primates. A few theoretical models for reproducing these effects have been proposed so far. Here we show that a simple but biophysically plausible two-network motif composed of spiking-neuron models and chemical synapses can exhibit feedforward and feedback influences through distinct frequency bands. Differently from previous studies, this kind of model allows us to study directed influences not only at the population level, by using a proxy for the local field potential, but also at the cellular level, by using the neuronal spiking series.

The debate on gravity theories to extend or modify General Relativity is very active today because of the issues related to ultra-violet and infra-red behavior of Einstein's theory. In the first case, we have to address the Quantum Gravity problem. In the latter, dark matter and dark energy, governing the large scale structure and the cosmological evolution, seem to escape from any final fundamental theory and detection. The state of art is that, up to now, no final theory, capable of explaining gravitational interaction at any scale, has been formulated. In this perspective, many research efforts are devoted to test theories of gravity by space-based experiments. Here we propose straightforward tests by the GINGER experiment, which, being Earth based, requires little modeling of external perturbation, allowing a thorough analysis of the systematics, crucial for experiments where sensitivity breakthrough is required. Specifically, we want to show that it is possible to constrain parameters of gravity theories, like scalar-tensor or Horava-Lifshitz gravity, by considering their post-Newtonian limits matched with experimental data. In particular, we use the Lense-Thirring measurements provided by GINGER to find out relations among the parameters of theories and finally compare the results with those provided by LARES and Gravity Probe-B satellites., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in EPJP

The sensitivity to angular rotation of the top class Sagnac gyroscope GINGERINO is carefully investigated with standard statistical means, using 103 days of continuous operation and the available geodesic measurements of the Earth angular rotation rate. All features of the Earth rotation rate are correctly reproduced. The sensitivity of fractions of frad/s is attained for long term runs. This excellent sensitivity and stability put Sagnac gyroscopes at the forefront for fundamental physics, in particular for tests of general relativity and Lorentz violation, where the sensitivity plays the key role to provide reliable data for deeper theoretical investigations. GINGERINO is one of the most sensitive Sagnac laser-gyroscope based on an heterolithic mechanical structure. It is a prototype for GINGER, the laser gyroscopes array proposed to reconstruct the Earth rotation vector and in this way to measure General Relativity effects. Many factors affect the final sensitivity of laser gyroscopes, in particular, when they are used in long term measurements, slow varying environmental parameters come into play. To understand the role of different terms allows to design more effective mechanical as well as optical layouts, while a proper model of the dynamics affecting long term (low frequency) signals would increase the effectiveness of the data analysis for improving the overall sensitivity. In this contribution we focus our concerns on the effects of room temperature and pressure aiming at further improving mechanical design and long term stability of the apparatus. Our data are compatible with a local orientation changes of the Gran Sasso site below $\mu$rad as predicted by geodetic models. This value is, consistent with the requirements for GINGER and the installation of an high sensitivity Sagnac gyroscope oriented at the maximum signal, \textit{i.e.} along the Earth rotation axes., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Complex systems are typically characterized as an intermediate situation between a complete regular structure and a random system. Brain signals can be studied as a striking example of such systems: cortical states can range from highly synchronous and ordered neuronal activity (with higher spiking variability) to desynchronized and disordered regimes (with lower spiking variability). It has been recently shown, by testing independent signatures of criticality, that a phase transition occurs in a cortical state of intermediate spiking variability. Here, we use a symbolic information approach to show that, despite the monotonical increase of the Shannon entropy between ordered and disordered regimes, we can determine an intermediate state of maximum complexity based on the Jensen disequilibrium measure. More specifically, we show that statistical complexity is maximized close to criticality for cortical spiking data of urethane-anesthetized rats, as well as for a network model of excitable elements that presents a critical point of a non-equilibrium phase transition., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Understanding the functional connectivity of the brain has become a major goal of neuroscience. In many situatons, the relative phase difference, together with coherence patterns, have been employed to infer the direction of the information flow. However, it has been recently shown in local field potential data from monkeys the existence of a synchronized regime in which unidirectionally coupled areas can present both positive and negative phase differences. During the counterintuitive regime, called anticipated synchronization (AS), the phase difference does not reflect the causality. Here we investigate coherence and causality at the alpha frequency band (10 Hz) between pairs of electroencephalogram (EEG) electrodes in humans during a GO/NO-GO task. We show that human EEG signals can exhibit anticipated synchronization, which is characterized by a unidirectional influence from an electrode A to an electrode B, but the electrode B leads the electrode A in time. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first verification of AS in EEG signals and in the human brain. The usual delayed synchronization (DS) regime is also present between many pairs. DS is characterized by a unidirectional influence from an electrode A to an electrode B and a positive phase difference between A and B which indicates that the electrode A leads the electrode B in time. Moreover, we show that EEG signals exhibit diversity in phase relations: the pairs of electrodes can present in-phase, anti-phase, or out-of-phase synchronization with a similar distribution of positive and negative phase differences.

Recent experimental results on spike avalanches measured in the urethane-anesthetized rat cortex have revealed scaling relations that indicate a phase transition at a specific level of cortical firing rate variability. The scaling relations point to critical exponents whose values differ from those of a branching process, which has been the canonical model employed to understand brain criticality. This suggested that a different model, with a different phase transition, might be required to explain the data. Here we show that this is not necessarily the case. By employing two different models belonging to the same universality class as the branching process (mean-field directed percolation) and treating the simulation data exactly like experimental data, we reproduce most of the experimental results. We find that subsampling the model and adjusting the time bin used to define avalanches (as done with experimental data) are sufficient ingredients to change the apparent exponents of the critical point. We describe a THz spectrometer operating between 1.2 and 10.5 THz, consisting of band pass filters made with metasurfaces. The source is made of 10 W small black body. The detector is a high sensitivity room temperature pyroelectric sensor. Various techniques used to prepare samples are described. The spectra obtained are compared with those measured with a Fourier Transformer Infrared Spectrometer on the same samples. The instrument, using commercial technologies available at the present time, can constitute an economical alternative to very expensive spectrometers. Measuring in a single location on Earth its angular rotation rate with respect to the celestial frame, with a sensitivity enabling access to the tiny Lense-Thirring effect is an extremely challenging task. GINGERINO is a large frame ring laser gyroscope, operating free running and unattended inside the underground laboratory of the Gran Sasso, Italy. The main geodetic signals, i.e., Annual and Chandler wobbles, daily polar motion and Length of the Day, are recovered from GINGERINO data using standard linear regression methods, demonstrating a sensitivity better than 1 prad/s, therefore close to the requirements for an Earth-based Lense-Thirring test., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

It has recently been reported that statistical signatures of brain criticality, obtained from distributions of neuronal avalanches, can depend on the cortical state. We revisit these claims with a completely different and independent approach, employing a maximum entropy model to test whether signatures of criticality appear in urethane-anesthetized rats. To account for the spontaneous variation of cortical state, we parse the time series and perform the maximum entropy analysis as a function of the variability of the population spiking activity. To compare data sets with different number of neurons, we define a normalized distance to criticality that takes into account the peak and width of the specific heat curve. We found an universal collapse of the normalized distance to criticality dependence on the cortical state on an animal by animal basis. This indicates a universal dynamics and a critical point at an intermediate value of spiking variability.

The mobile application market is rapidly growing and changing, offering always brand new software to install in increasingly powerful devices. Mobile devices become pervasive and more heterogeneous, embedding latest technologies such as multicore architectures, special-purpose circuits and reconfigurable logic. In a future mobile market scenario reconfigurable systems are employed to provide high-speed functionalities to assist execution of applications. However, new security concerns are introduced. In particular, protecting the Intellectual Property of the exchanged soft IP cores is a serious concern. The available techniques for preserving integrity, confidentiality and authenticity suffer from the limitation of heavily relying onto the system designer. In this paper we propose two different protocols suitable for the secure deployment of soft IP cores in FPGA-based mobile heterogeneous systems where multiple independent actors are involved: a simple scenario requiring trust relationship between entities, and a more complex scenario where no trust relationship exists through adoption of the Direct Anonymous Attestation protocol. Finally, we provide a prototype implementation of the proposed architectures.

Ring laser gyroscopes are top sensitivity inertial sensors used in the measurement of angular rotation rates. It is well known that the response of such remarkable instruments can in principle access the very low frequency band, but the occurrence of nonlinear effects in the laser dynamics imposes severe limitations in terms of sensitivity and stability. We report here general relationships aimed at evaluating corrections able to effectively account for nonlinear laser dynamics. The so-derived corrections are applied to analyse thirty days of continuous operation of the large area ring laser gyroscope GINGERINO leading to duly reconstruct the Sagnac frequency $\omega_S$. The analysis shows that, on the average, the evaluated corrections affect the measurement of the Earth rotation rate $\Omega_E$ at the level of 1 part in $1.5\times10^{3}$. Among the identified corrections, the null shift term $\omega_{NS}$ is the dominant one. It turns out proportional to the optical losses $\mu$ of the ring cavity, which are changing in time at the level of $10\%$ within the considered period of thirty days. The time behaviour is reconstructed based on available signals (interferogram and mono-beam intensities), and the Allan deviation of the estimated $\Omega_E$ shows a remarkable long term stability, leading to a sensitivity better than $10^{-10}$rad/s with more than $10$s of integration time, and approaching $(8.5\pm 0.5)\times 10^{-12}$rad/s with $4.5\times10^{5}$s of integration time., Comment: 7 pages and 6 figure

Inertial sensors stimulate very large interest, not only for their application but also for fundamental physics tests. Ring laser gyros, which measure angular rotation rate, are certainly among the most sensitive inertial sensors, with excellent dynamic range and bandwidth. Large area ring laser gyros are routinely able to measure fractions of prad/s, with high duty cycle and bandwidth, providing fast, direct and local measurement of relevant geodetic and geophysical signals. Improvements of a factor $10-100$ would open the windows for general relativity tests, as the GINGER project, an Earth based experiment aiming at the Lense-Thirring test at $1\%$ level. However, it is well known that the dynamics of the laser induces non-linearities, and those effects are more evident in small scale instruments. Sensitivity and accuracy improvements are always worthwhile, and in general there is demand for high sensitivity environmental study and development of inertial platforms, where small scale transportable instruments should be used. We discuss a novel technique to analyse the data, aiming at studying and removing those non-linearity. The analysis is applied to the two ring laser prototypes GP2 and GINGERINO, and angular rotation rate evaluated with the new and standard methods are compared. The improvement is evident, it shows that the back-scatter problem of the ring laser gyros is negligible with a proper analysis of the data, improving the performances of large scale ring laser gyros, but also indicating that small scale instruments with sensitivity of nrad/s are feasible., Comment: 9 pages and 7 figures

Large frame ring laser gyroscopes are top sensitivity inertial sensors able to measure absolute angular rotation rate below $\rm \mathbf{prad/s}$ in few seconds. The development of ring laser based on a simple mechanical structure, usually called hetero lithic structure, requires to control the geometry of the apparatus. Our prototype GP2 is a middle size ring laser, whose main purpose is the geometry control with opto-mechanical means. The first tests have been performed, and the data analysed. The lengths of the diagonals of the ring cavity have been measured with $\pmb{\mu {\rm m}}$ accuracy, and continuous operation has been obtained, without loss of sensitivity. GP2 is located in a standard laboratory, with a temperature stabilisation around 1 degree Celsius. The analysis shows that middle size ring lasers can obtain nrad/s sensitivity also in a standard environment., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We employ an accurate, ab initio potential energy surface (PES) which describes the electronic interaction energy between the molecular anion OH$^-$ ($^1\Sigma^+$) and the neutral rubidium atom Rb ($^2S$), to evaluate the elastic and inelastic cross sections over a range of energies representative of the conditions of low-T experiments in MOT traps, when combined with laser-cooled rubidium gas. The system is considered to be in its vibrational ground state, while the first four rotational levels are taken to be involved in the cooling and heating collisional processes that are computed here. The corresponding cooling and heating rates up to about 35 K are obtained from the calculations and compared with the recent results in a similar experiments, where He was the partner atom of the current anion.

This paper deals with the possible formation of two molecular anions often considered likely components in the physical environments of the Interstellar Medium ( ISM) : $\mathrm{C_2H^-}$ and $\mathrm{NCO^-}$. They are both discussed here by computationally following the radiative association (RA) mechanism starting from $\mathrm{C_2^-}$, $\mathrm{H}$, $\mathrm{NC^-}$ and $\mathrm{O}$ as partners. The corresponding RA total cross sections produced by the calculations are in turn employed to generate the overall association rates over the relevant range of temperatures. The latter are found to be in line with other molecular ions formed by RA but not large enough to uniquivocally suggest this path as the main route to the anions formation in the ISM. Other possible paths of formation are also analysed and discussed. The presence of resonant structures during the association dynamics for both systems is found by the calculations and their consequences are discussed in some detail in the present study.

We experimentally study the nonlinear dynamics of a femtosecond ytterbium doped mode-locked fiber laser. With the laser operating in the pulsed regime a route to chaos is presented, starting from stable mode-locking, period two, period four, chaos and period three regimes. Return maps and bifurcation diagrams were extracted from time series for each regime. The analysis of the time series with the laser operating in the quasi mode-locked regime presents deterministic chaos described by an unidimensional Rossler map. A positive Lyapunov exponent $\lambda = 0.14$ confirms the deterministic chaos of the system. We suggest an explanation about the observed map by relating gain saturation and intra-cavity loss.

GINGERINO is a square ring-laser prototype, which has been built to investigate the level of noise inside the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. It Is meant for fundamental physics, but it provides suitable data for geophysics and seismology. Since May 2017 it is continuously acquiring data. The analysis of the first $90$ days shows that the duty cycle is higher than $95\%$, and the quantum shot noise limit is of the order of $ 10^{-10}(\mathrm{rad}/s)/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$. It is located in a seismically active area, and it recorded part of the of central Italy earthquakes. Its high sensitivity in the frequency band of fraction of Hz makes it suitable for seismology studies. The main purpose of the present analysis is to investigate the long term response of the apparatus. Simple and fast routines to eliminate the disturbances coming from the laser have been developed. The Allan deviation of the raw data reaches $10^{-7}$ after about $10^6s$ of integration time, while the processed data shows an improvement of one order of magnitude. Disturbances at the daily time scale are present in the processed data and the expected signal induced by polar motion and solid Earth tide is covered by those disturbances., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

Heterostructures of topological insulators and ferromagnets offer new opportunities in spintronics and a route to novel anomalous Hall states. In one such structure, EuS/Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ a dramatic enhancement of the Curie temperature was recently observed. We performed Raman spectroscopy on a similar set of thin films to investigate the magnetic and lattice excitations. Interfacial strain was monitored through its effects on the Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ phonon modes while the magnetic system was probed through the EuS Raman mode. Despite its appearance in bare EuS, the heterostructures lack the corresponding EuS Raman signal. Through numerical calculations we rule out the possibility of Fabry-Perot interference suppressing the mode. We attribute the absence of a magnetic signal in EuS to a large charge transfer with the Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. This could provide an additional pathway for manipulating the magnetic, optical, or electronic response of topological heterostructures., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Anticipated synchronization (AS) is a counter intuitive behavior that has been observed in several systems. When AS establishes in a sender-receiver configuration, the latter can predict the future dynamics of the former for certain parameter values. In particular, in neuroscience AS was proposed to explain the apparent discrepancy between information flow and time lag in the cortical activity recorded in monkeys. Despite its success, a clear understanding on the mechanisms yielding AS in neuronal circuits is still missing. Here we use the well-known phase-resetting-curve (PRC) approach to study the prototypical sender-receiver-interneuron neuronal motif. Our aim is to better understand how the transitions between delayed to anticipated synchronization and anticipated synchronization to phase-drift regimes occur. We construct a map based on the PRC method to predict the phase-locking regimes and their stability. We find that a PRC function of two variables, accounting simultaneously for the inputs from sender and interneuron into the receiver, is essential to reproduce the numerical results obtained using a Hodgkin-Huxley model for the neurons. On the contrary, the typical approximation that considers a sum of two independent single-variable PRCs fails for intermediate to high values of the inhibitory connectivity between interneuron. In particular, it looses the delayed-synchronization to anticipated-synchronization transition.

GINGERino is a large frame laser gyroscope investigating the ground motion in the most inner part of the underground international laboratory of the Gran Sasso, in central Italy. It consists of a square ring laser with a $3.6$ m side. Several days of continuous measurements have been collected, with the apparatus running unattended. The power spectral density in the seismic bandwidth is at the level of $10^{-10} \rm{(rad/s)/\sqrt{Hz}}$. A maximum resolution of $30\,\rm{prad/s}$ is obtained with an integration time of few hundred seconds. The ring laser routinely detects seismic rotations induced by both regional earthquakes and teleseisms. A broadband seismic station is installed on the same structure of the gyroscope. We investigate the synchronization properties between two excitatory coupled neurons in the presence of an inhibitory loop mediated by an interneuron. Dynamical inhibition together with noise independently applied to each neuron provide phase diversity in the dynamics of the neuronal motif. We show that the interplay between the coupling strengths and external noise controls the phase relations between the neurons in a counter-intuitive way. For a master-slave configuration (unidirectional coupling) we find that the slave can anticipate the master, on average, if the slave is subject to the inhibitory feedback. In this non-usual regime, called anticipated synchronization (AS), the phase of the post-synaptic neuron is advanced with respect to that of the pre-synaptic neuron. We also show that the AS regime survives even in the presence of unbalanced bidirectional excitatory coupling. Moreover, for the symmetric mutually coupled situation, the neuron that is subject to the inhibitory loop leads in phase.

We present an apparatus for terahertz fingerprint discrimination of materials designed to be fast, simple, compact and economical in order to be suitable for preliminary on-field analysis. The system working principles, bioinspired by the human vision of colors, are based on the use of microfabricated metamaterials selective filters and of a very compact optics based on metallic ellipsoidal mirrors in air. We experimentally demonstrate the operation of the apparatus in discriminating simple substances such as salt, staple foods and grease in an accurate and reproducible manner. Recent advances in large ring laser gyroscopes (RLG) technologies opened the possibility to observe rotations of the ground with sensitivities up to $10^{-11}$ $\frac{rad}{s}$ over the frequency band of seismological interest (0.01-1Hz), thus opening the way to a new geophysical discipline, i.e. rotational seismology. A measure of rotations in seismology is of fundamental interest for (a) the determination of all the six degrees of freedom that characterize a rigid body motion, and (b) the quantitative estimate of the rotational motions contaminating ground translation measurements obtained from standard seismometers. Within this framework, this paper presents and describes GINGERino, a new large observatory-class RLG located in Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS), one national laboratories of the INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare). We also report unprecedented observations and analyses of the roto-translational signals from a tele-seismic event observed in such a deep underground environment.

Large ring-laser gyroscopes are capable of measuring angular rotations with a precision well below fractions of $prad/s$, not far from $10^{-14}$ $rad/s$, the accuracy required for General Relativity tests, this is what the GINGER (Gyroscope-IN-GEneral-Relativity) experiment is aiming for. These features do not guarantee the possibility of measuring the General Relativity Lense--Thirring effect, that manifests itself as a tiny ($\approx 10^{-9} \times \Omega_E$) perturbation of the Earth rotation rate. An underground location being in principle less affected by external local disturbances represents a good candidate for housing such a challenging experiment. GINGERino is a test apparatus to investigate the residual local disturbances in the most inner part of the underground international laboratory of the GranSasso (LNGS). It consists of a square ring laser with a $3.6$ m side. The instrument has been tailored to be the larger allowed by the particular location inside the laboratory. Its main objective is to measure the very low frequency rotational motions, in order to prove that LNGS is a suitable location for very low noise measurements and, possibly, General Relativity tests. Aside this main goal, GINGERino will provide unique data for geodesy and geophysics. Its installation has been completed during 2015. Since then, several long set of data have been collected, and the apparatus has been continuously running unattended for more than one week. The typical power spectrum sensitivity was a few $ 10^{-10} rad/s/\sqrt(Hz)$, with integration time not longer than tens of seconds. Cold molecules are important for many applications, from fundamental precision measurements, quantum information processing, quantum-controlled chemistry, to understanding the cold interstellar medium. Molecular ions are known to be cooled efficiently in sympathetic collisions with cold atoms or ions. However, little knowledge is available on the elementary cooling steps, because the determination of quantum state-to-state collision rates at low temperature is prohibitively challenging for both experiment and theory. Here we present a method to manipulate molecular quantum states by non-resonant photodetachment. Based on this we provide absolute quantum scattering rate coefficients under full quantum state control for the rotationally inelastic collision of hydroxyl anions with helium. Experiment and quantum scattering theory show excellent agreement without adjustable parameters. Very similar rate coefficients are obtained for two different isotopes, which is linked to several quantum scattering resonances appearing at different energies. The presented method is also applicable to polyatomic systems and will help shed light on non-radiative processes in polyaromatic hydrocarbons and protein chromophores., Comment: Nature Physics (in press)

After reviewing the importance of light as a probe for testing the structure of space-time, we describe the GINGER project. GINGER will be a three-dimensional array of large size ring-lasers able to measure the de Sitter and Lense-Thirring effects. The instrument will be located at the underground laboratory of GranSasso, in Italy. We describe the preliminary actions and measurements already under way and present the full road map to GINGER. The intermediate apparatuses GP2 and GINGERino are described. A superconducting metasurface operating in the THz range and based on the complementary metamaterial approach is discussed. Experimental measurements as a function of temperature and magnetic field display a modulation of the metasurface with a change in transmission amplitude and frequency of the resonant features. Such a metasurface is successively used as a resonator for a cavity quantum electrodynamic experiment displaying ultrastrong coupling to the cyclotron transition of a 2DEG. A finite element modeling is developed and its results are in good agreement with the experimental data. In this system a normalized coupling ratio of $\frac{\Omega}{\omega_c}=0.27$ is measured and a clear modulation of the polaritonic states as a function of the temperature is observed.

GINGER is a proposed tridimensional array of laser gyroscopes with the aim of measuring the Lense-Thirring effect, predicted by the General Relativity theory, in a terrestrial laboratory environment. For decades astronomers and astrophysicists believed that only positively charged ions were worthy of relevance in drawing the networks for possible chemical reactions in the interstellar medium, as well as in modeling the physical conditions in most of astrophysical environments. Thus, molecular negative ions received minor attention until their possible existence was observationally confirmed (discovery of the first interstellar anion, C6H-), about thirty years after the first physically reasonable proposal on their actual detection was theoretically surmised by E.Herbst. In an astrophysical context, their role should be then found in their involvement in the charge balance as well as in the chemical evolution of the considered environment: depending on their amount and on the global gas density, in fact, the possible evolutive scenario could be susceptible of marked variations on the estimated time needed for reaching the steady state, their presence having thus also important repercussions on the final chemical composition of a given environment. The main reasons that originally motivated us to undertake the present work, were at least two. First of all, we intended to demonstrate the importance of resonances in forming molecular anions in different astrophysical environments. Secondly, we were attracted by the possibility of investigating the occurrence of radiationless paths like intramolecular vibrational redistributions to account for the dissipation of the extra energy initially carried by the impinging electron. Accordingly, the present PhD represents a theoretical/computational work which deals with an area placed at the boundary between (molecular) astrophysics, quantum collision thery, and theoretical chemistry. The formation of anionic species in the interstellar medium from interaction of linear molecules containing carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen as atomic components (polyynes) with free electrons in the environment is modelled via a quantum treatment of the collision dynamics. The ensuing integral cross sections are employed to obtain the corresponding attachment rates over a broad range of temperatures for the electrons. The calculations unequivocally show that a parametrization form often employed for such rates yields a broad range of values that turn out to be specific for each molecular species considered, thus excluding using a unique set for the whole class of polyynes., Comment: accepted to be published on MNRAS

CONTEXT: The attachment of free electrons to polycondensed aromatic ring molecules (PAHs) is studied for the variety of these molecules with different numbers of condensed rings and over a broad range of electron temperatures, using a multichannel quantum scattering approach. The calculations of the relevant cross sections are used in turn to model the corresponding attachment rates for each of the systems under study, and these rates are parametrized as a function of temperature using a commonly employed expression for two-body processes in the interstellar medium (ISM). AIM: The scope of this work is to use first principles to establish the influence of chemical properties on the efficiency of the electron-attachment process for PAHs. METHODS: Quantum multichannel scattering methods are employed to generate the relevant cross sections, hence the attachment rates, using integral elastic cross sections computed over a broad range of relevant energies, from threshold up to 1000 K and linking the attachment to low-energy resonant collisions. RESULTS: The rates obtained for the present molecules are found to markedly vary within the test ensemble of the present work and to be lower than the earlier values used for the entire class of PAHs anions, when modelling their evolutions in ISM environments. The effects of such differences on the evolutions of chemical networks that include both PAH and PAH- species are analysed in some detail and related to previous calculations., Comment: accepted to be published on A&A

We propose a scheme for the realization of artificial neural networks based on Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs). In order to demonstrate the operation of this scheme we designed and successfully tested a small network that implements a XOR gate and is trained by means of examples. The proposed scheme can be particularly convenient as support for superconducting applications such as detectors for astrophysics, high energy experiments, medicine imaging and so on., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We report the observation of the ground rotation induced by the Mw=9.0, 11th of March 2011, Japan earthquake. The rotation measurements have been conducted with a ring laser gyroscope operating in a vertical plane, thus detecting rotations around the horizontal axis. Comparison of ground rotations with vertical accelerations from a co-located force-balance accelerometer shows excellent ring laser coupling at periods longer than 100s. Under the plane wave assumption, we derive a theoretical relationship between horizontal rotation and vertical acceleration for Rayleigh waves. Due to the oblique mounting of the gyroscope with respect to the wave direction-of-arrival, apparent velocities derived from the acceleration / rotation rate ratio are expected to be always larger than, or equal to the true wave propagation velocity. This hypothesis is confirmed through comparison with fundamental-mode, Rayleigh wave phase velocities predicted for a standard Earth model., Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of Seismology

Two identical autonomous dynamical systems coupled in a master-slave configuration can exhibit anticipated synchronization (AS) if the slave also receives a delayed negative self-feedback. Recently, AS was shown to occur in systems of simplified neuron models, requiring the coupling of the neuronal membrane potential with its delayed value. However, this coupling has no obvious biological correlate. Here we propose a canonical neuronal microcircuit with standard chemical synapses, where the delayed inhibition is provided by an interneuron. In this biologically plausible scenario, a smooth transition from delayed synchronization (DS) to AS typically occurs when the inhibitory synaptic conductance is increased. The phenomenon is shown to be robust when model parameters are varied within physiological range. Since the DS-AS transition amounts to an inversion in the timing of the pre- and post-synaptic spikes, our results could have a bearing on spike-timing-dependent-plasticity models.
