Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) for whole slide image (WSI) analysis in computational pathology often neglects instance-level learning as supervision is typically provided only at the bag level. In this work, we present PathMIL, a framework designed to improve MIL through two perspectives: (1) employing instance-level supervision and (2) learning inter-instance contextual information on bag level. Firstly, we propose a novel Coarse-to-Fine Self-Distillation (CFSD) paradigm, to probe and distil a classifier trained with bag-level information to obtain instance-level labels which could effectively provide the supervision for the same classifier in a finer way. Secondly, to capture inter-instance contextual information in WSI, we propose Two-Dimensional Positional Encoding (2DPE), which encodes the spatial appearance of instances within a bag. We also theoretically and empirically prove the instance-level learnability of CFSD. PathMIL is evaluated on multiple benchmarking tasks, including subtype classification (TCGA-NSCLC), tumour classification (CAMELYON16), and an internal benchmark for breast cancer receptor status classification. Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance, with AUC scores of 0.9152 and 0.8524 for estrogen and progesterone receptor status classification, respectively, an AUC of 0.9618 for subtype classification, and 0.8634 for tumour classification, surpassing existing methods.

Language model alignment is a critical step in training modern generative language models. Alignment targets to improve win rate of a sample from the aligned model against the base model. Today, we are increasingly using inference-time algorithms (e.g., Best-of-N, controlled decoding, tree search) to decode from language models rather than standard sampling. We show that this train/test mismatch makes standard RLHF framework sub-optimal in view of such inference-time methods. To this end, we propose a framework for inference-aware alignment (InfAlign), which aims to optimize inference-time win rate of the aligned policy against the base model. We prove that for any inference-time decoding procedure, the optimal aligned policy is the solution to the standard RLHF problem with a transformation of the reward. This motivates us to provide the calibrate-and-transform RL (InfAlign-CTRL) algorithm to solve this problem, which involves a reward calibration step and a KL-regularized reward maximization step with a transformation of the calibrated reward. For best-of-N sampling and best-of-N jailbreaking, we propose specific transformations offering up to 3-8% improvement on inference-time win rates. Finally, we also show that our proposed reward calibration method is a strong baseline for optimizing standard win rate.

The fabrication and assembly of High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) magnets can be significantly streamlined by (1) direct deposition of HTS onto modular components and (2) laser-ablated grooves to bound and guide the electric currents over the superconducting surfaces. "Coils" bounded by consecutive grooves can be individually powered, or connected in series, or in parallel. Applications include plasma-confinement devices such as stellarators and magnets for particle accelerators. On the way to HTS magnets generating more complicated three-dimensional fields, this paper validates the technique for two cylindrically symmetric magnets made of standard conductors. The optimized grooving pattern is considered as an inverse problem that is resolved using a least squares approach with Tikhonov regularization. This approach was first applied to design a magnet that replicates the magnetic field configuration of a microwave source of the gyrotron type. Gyrotrons require a particular profile of magnetic field, which our aluminium prototype successfully reproduced with 10$^{-1}$ precision. The second one, in copper, is a small-size, reduced-field magnet for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). This application requires highly uniform longitudinal fields. The achieved precision (about 50 ppm) is exceptional for an MRI magnet just getting out of the factory, and can easily meet hospital standards after minimal shimming or other error field correction. Classifiers are used throughout industry to enforce policies, ranging from the detection of toxic content to age-appropriate content filtering. While these classifiers serve important functions, it is also essential that they are built in ways that minimize unfair biases for users. One such fairness consideration is called group fairness, which desires that different sub-population of users receive equal treatment. This is a well-studied problem in the context of 'classical' classifiers. However, the emergence of prompt-based language model (LM) decision making has created new opportunities to solve text-based classification tasks, and the fairness properties of these new classifiers are not yet well understood. Further, the `remediation toolkit' is incomplete for LM-based decision makers and little is understood about how to improve decision maker group fairness while maintaining classifier performance. This work sets out to add more tools to that toolbox. We introduce adaptations of existing effective approaches from the classical classifier fairness to the prompt-based classifier space. We also devise simple methods that take advantage of the new structure of prompt-based decision makers and operate at the prompt level. We compare these approaches empirically on real data. Our results suggest that adaptations of approaches that are effective for classical classifiers remain effective in the LM-based classifier environment. However, there is room for further exploration of prompt-based remediation methods (and other remediation methods that take advantage of LM structure).

Directed collective cell migration is central in morphogenesis, wound healing and cancer progression1,2. Although it is well-accepted that the molecular anisotropy of the micro-environment guides this migration3,4, its impact on the pattern of the cell flows remains largely unexplored. Studying confluent human bronchial epithelial cells (HBECs) in vitro, we show that subcellular microgrooves elicit a polar mode of collective migration in millimeter-long bidirectional lanes that are much wider than a cell size, even though cell flows are highly disordered on featureless surfaces 5. This directed flocking-like transition6,7 can be accounted for by a hydrodynamic theory of active polar fluids and corresponding numerical simulations. This model further predicts that anisotropic friction resulting from the grooves lowers the threshold of the transition, which we confirm experimentally. Therefore, microscopic anisotropy of the environment not only directs the collective motion of the cells in the easy direction, but also shapes the cell migration pattern. Flow patterns induced by collective contact guidance are thus markedly different from those induced by supracellular confinement8, demonstrating that all length-scales of the micro-environment must be considered in a comprehensive description of collective migration. We construct a hydrodynamic theory of active smectics A in two-dimensional space, including the creation/annihilation and motility of dislocations with Burgers' number $\pm1$. We derive analytical criteria on the set of parameters that lead to flows. We show that the motility of dislocations can lead to flow transitions with distinct features from the previously reported active Helfrich--Hurault shear instability with, notably, a first-order transition in the velocity from quiescence to turbulence., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Several enzymes exhibit enhanced diffusion in the presence of a substrate. One explanation of this enhancement arises from fluctuating dimer models, which suggest that enzymes have a higher diffusion constant when interacting with substrates compared to when they are free. Another possible mechanism, suggested in both experimental and theoretical studies, is that enzymes act as nanoswimmers. However, existing nanoswimmer models have struggled to account for the exceptionally high self-propulsion speeds observed in experiments, with estimated increases in diffusion due to self-propulsion found to be minimal. In this study, we model enzymes as dimers with fluctuating mobility. We show that even dimers can exhibit run-and-tumble motion when transitioning between states of varying mobility within the enzymatic cycle. By exploring a three-state enzymatic cycle, we identify the conditions under which self-propulsion speeds and increases in diffusion rate consistent with experimental observations can be achieved.

In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

Plug-and-Play (PnP) algorithms are a class of iterative algorithms that address image inverse problems by combining a physical model and a deep neural network for regularization. Even if they produce impressive image restoration results, these algorithms rely on a non-standard use of a denoiser on images that are less and less noisy along the iterations, which contrasts with recent algorithms based on Diffusion Models (DM), where the denoiser is applied only on re-noised images. We propose a new PnP framework, called Stochastic deNOising REgularization (SNORE), which applies the denoiser only on images with noise of the adequate level. It is based on an explicit stochastic regularization, which leads to a stochastic gradient descent algorithm to solve ill-posed inverse problems. A convergence analysis of this algorithm and its annealing extension is provided. Experimentally, we prove that SNORE is competitive with respect to state-of-the-art methods on deblurring and inpainting tasks, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

There is renewed interest in the structure of the essential amino acid Phenylalanine in the solid state. Three new polymorphs were found in the years 2012 to 2014. Here, we investigate the structure, stability, and energetical ordering of these phases using first-principles simulations at the level of Density Functional Theory incorporating van-der-Waals interactions. Two of the distinct crystal forms are found to be structurally similar and energetically very close after vibrational free energy corrections have been taken into account. Infrared absorption spectra are likewise calculated and compared to experimental measurements. By combining measurements obtained with a commercial Fourier Transform Infra-Red spectrometer and a homemade air-photonics-based THz Time Domain spectrometer, we could carry out this comparison in the vibrational frequency region from 1 to 40~THz. The excellent agreement of the line positions and the established energy ranking allow us to identify the most stable polymorph of Phenylalanine.

We compare three different setups for measuring cell-cell adhesion. We show that the measured strength depends on the type of setup that is used. For identical cells different assays measure different detachment forces. This can be understood from the fact that cell-cell detachment is a global property of the system. We also analyse the role of external force and line tension on contact angle and cell-cell detachment. Comparison with experiment suggests that the current data are essentially dynamical in nature. This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Despite achieving promising fairness-error trade-offs, in-processing mitigation techniques for group fairness cannot be employed in numerous practical applications with limited computation resources or no access to the training pipeline of the prediction model. In these situations, post-processing is a viable alternative. However, current methods are tailored to specific problem settings and fairness definitions and hence, are not as broadly applicable as in-processing. In this work, we propose a framework that turns any regularized in-processing method into a post-processing approach. This procedure prescribes a way to obtain post-processing techniques for a much broader range of problem settings than the prior post-processing literature. We show theoretically and through extensive experiments that our framework preserves the good fairness-error trade-offs achieved with in-processing and can improve over the effectiveness of prior post-processing methods. Finally, we demonstrate several advantages of a modular mitigation strategy that disentangles the training of the prediction model from the fairness mitigation, including better performance on tasks with partial group labels., Comment: Conference paper at ICML 2024

Cell adhesion proteins typically form stable clusters that anchor the cell membrane to its environment. Several works have suggested that cell membrane protein clusters can emerge from a local feedback between the membrane curvature and the density of proteins. Here, we investigate the effect of such curvature-sensing mechanism in the context of cell adhesion proteins. We show how clustering emerges in an intermediate range of adhesion and curvature-sensing strengths. This work aims at constraining the size, shape, and geometric albedo of the dwarf planet candidate 2002 MS4 through the analysis of nine stellar occultation events. Using multichord detection, we also studied the object's topography by analyzing the obtained limb and the residuals between observed chords and the best-fitted ellipse. We predicted and organized the observational campaigns of nine stellar occultations by 2002 MS4 between 2019 and 2022, resulting in two single-chord events, four double-chord detections, and three events with three to up to sixty-one positive chords. Using 13 selected chords from the 8 August 2020 event, we determined the global elliptical limb of 2002 MS4. The best-fitted ellipse, combined with the object's rotational information from the literature, constrains the object's size, shape, and albedo. Additionally, we developed a new method to characterize topography features on the object's limb. The global limb has a semi-major axis of 412 $\pm$ 10 km, a semi-minor axis of 385 $\pm$ 17 km, and the position angle of the minor axis is 121 $^\circ$ $\pm$ 16$^\circ$. From this instantaneous limb, we obtained 2002 MS4's geometric albedo and the projected area-equivalent diameter. Significant deviations from the fitted ellipse in the northernmost limb are detected from multiple sites highlighting three distinct topographic features: one 11 km depth depression followed by a 25$^{+4}_{-5}$ km height elevation next to a crater-like depression with an extension of 322 $\pm$ 39 km and 45.1 $\pm$ 1.5 km deep. Our results present an object that is $\approx$138 km smaller in diameter than derived from thermal data, possibly indicating the presence of a so-far unknown satellite. However, within the error bars, the geometric albedo in the V-band agrees with the results published in the literature, even with the radiometric-derived albedo.

Despite the rich literature on machine learning fairness, relatively little attention has been paid to remediating complex systems, where the final prediction is the combination of multiple classifiers and where multiple groups are present. In this paper, we first show that natural baseline approaches for improving equal opportunity fairness scale linearly with the product of the number of remediated groups and the number of remediated prediction labels, rendering them impractical. We then introduce two simple techniques, called {\em task-overconditioning} and {\em group-interleaving}, to achieve a constant scaling in this multi-group multi-label setup. Our experimental results in academic and real-world environments demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposal at mitigation within this environment.

Cell adhesion proteins are transmembrane proteins that bind cells to their environment. These proteins typically cluster into disk-shaped or linear structures. Here we show that such clustering patterns spontaneously emerge when the protein sense the membrane deformation gradient, for example by reaching a lower-energy conformation when the membrane is tilted relative to the underlying binding substrate. Increasing the strength of the membrane gradient-sensing mechanism first yields isolated disk-shaped clusters and then long linear structures. Spatiotemporal coordination of chromatin and subnuclear compartments is crucial for cells. Numerous enzymes act inside nucleus\textemdash some of those transiently link and pass two chromatin segments. Here we study how such an active perturbation affects fluctuating dynamics of an inclusion in the chromatic medium. Using numerical simulations and a versatile effective model, we categorize inclusion dynamics into three distinct modes. The transient-link-and-pass activity speeds up inclusion dynamics by affecting a slow mode related to chromatin remodeling, viz., size and shape of the chromatin meshes.

In this paper, we propose to regularize ill-posed inverse problems using a deep hierarchical variational autoencoder (HVAE) as an image prior. The proposed method synthesizes the advantages of i) denoiser-based Plug \& Play approaches and ii) generative model based approaches to inverse problems. First, we exploit VAE properties to design an efficient algorithm that benefits from convergence guarantees of Plug-and-Play (PnP) methods. Second, our approach is not restricted to specialized datasets and the proposed PnP-HVAE model is able to solve image restoration problems on natural images of any size. Our experiments show that the proposed PnP-HVAE method is competitive with both SOTA denoiser-based PnP approaches, and other SOTA restoration methods based on generative models.

Inheritance is the fundamental building block of civilization. This is the addition of wealth, knowledge and properties over time that produce the society in which we are living. Every generation does not have to start from zero and can capitalize on the efforts of previous generations. Blockchain based assets are very efficiently and securely transferred between living entities. Yet the actual way to make heirs inherit crypto-assets is seldom discussed. It appears that the problems linked with the inheritance of crypto-assets raise a lot of technical, societal and legal issues. Part of those issues have to be tackled with at the level of the blockchain infrastructure itself. The aim of this paper is to open a research field, and to discuss some ideas, with regards to this overlooked issue. Inheritance is neither a peripheral question nor one that can be dodged. Fluid pumping and the generation of electric current by living tissues are required during morphogenetic processes and for maintainance of homeostasis. How these flows emerge from active and passive ion transport in cells has been well established. However, the interplay between flow and current generation is not well understood. Here, we study the electro-hydraulic coupling that arises from cell ion pumping. We develop a one-dimensional continuum model of fluid and ion transport across active cell membranes. Solving the Nernst-Planck and Poisson equations in the limit of weak charge imbalance allows us to derive approximate analytical solutions of the model. These approximations, consistent with the numerical results in physiologically relevant regime of parameters, allow us to describe electro-hydraulic activity of cells and tissues in terms of experimentally accessible parameters.

Shadows in videos are difficult to detect because of the large shadow deformation between frames. In this work, we argue that accounting for shadow deformation is essential when designing a video shadow detection method. To this end, we introduce the shadow deformation attention trajectory (SODA), a new type of video self-attention module, specially designed to handle the large shadow deformations in videos. Moreover, we present a new shadow contrastive learning mechanism (SCOTCH) which aims at guiding the network to learn a unified shadow representation from massive positive shadow pairs across different videos. We demonstrate empirically the effectiveness of our two contributions in an ablation study. Furthermore, we show that SCOTCH and SODA significantly outperforms existing techniques for video shadow detection. There has been a flurry of research in recent years on notions of fairness in ranking and recommender systems, particularly on how to evaluate if a recommender allocates exposure equally across groups of relevant items (also known as provider fairness). While this research has laid an important foundation, it gave rise to different approaches depending on whether relevant items are compared per-user/per-query or aggregated across users. Despite both being established and intuitive, we discover that these two notions can lead to opposite conclusions, a form of Simpson's Paradox. We reconcile these notions and show that the tension is due to differences in distributions of users where items are relevant, and break down the important factors of the user's recommendations. Based on this new understanding, practitioners might be interested in either notions, but might face challenges with the per-user metric due to partial observability of the relevance and user satisfaction, typical in real-world recommenders. We describe a technique based on distribution matching to estimate it in such a scenario. We demonstrate on simulated and real-world recommender data the effectiveness and usefulness of such an approach.

We consider a deterministic optimal control problem with a maximum running cost functional, in a finite horizon context, and propose deep neural network approximations for Bellman's dynamic programming principle, corresponding also to some first-order Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations. This work follows the lines of Hur\'e et al. (SIAM J. Numer. Anal., vol. 59 (1), 2021, pp. 525-557) where algorithms are proposed in a stochastic context. However, we need to develop a completely new approach in order to deal with the propagation of errors in the deterministic setting, where no diffusion is present in the dynamics. Our analysis gives precise error estimates in an average norm. The study is then illustrated on several academic numerical examples related to front propagations models in the presence of obstacle constraints, showing the relevance of the approach for average dimensions (e.g. from $2$ to $8$), even for non-smooth value functions.

The PIP-II Injector Test 1 PIP2IT facility accelerator was assembled in multiple stages in 2014 $-$ 2021 to test concepts and components of the future PIPII linac that is being constructed at Fermilab. In its final configuration, PIP2IT accelerated a 0.55 ms x 20 Hz x 2 mA H$-$ beam to 16 MeV. To protect elements of the beam line, a Machine Protection System MPS was implemented and commissioned. The beam was interrupted faster than 10$\mu$s when excessive beam loss was detected. A series of beam dynamic studies were performed in 2020-2021 at the PIP-II Injector Test Facility (PIP2IT) that has been built to validate the concept of the front-end of the PIP-II linac being constructed at Fermilab. PIP2IT is comprised of a 30-keV H- ion source, a 2 m-long Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT), a 2.1- MeV CW RFQ, followed by a 10-m Medium Energy Beam Transport (MEBT), 2 cryomodules accelerating the beam to 16 MeV and a High-Energy Beam Transport (HEBT) bringing the beam to a dump. This paper presents beam dynamics - related measurements performed at PIP2IT such as the Twiss parameters with Allison scanners, beam envelopes along the injector, and transverse and longitudinal rms emittance reconstruction. These measurements are compared with predictions from the beam dynamics code Tracewin.

We discuss some issues to the inheritance of crypto assets. We propose a distributed, privacy preserving, protocol to establish a consensus on the death of the owner of crypto assets: the Tales From the Crypt Protocol. Until the actual death of the owner no link can be made between public information and the corresponding crypto assets. This protocol is generic and could be incorparated into any arbitrary crypto platform.

We show that dislocations in active 2d smectics with underlying rotational symmetry are always unbound in the presence of noise, meaning the active smectic phase does not exist for non-zero noise in $d=2$. The active smectic phase can, like equilibrium smectics in 2d, be stabilized by applying rotational symmetry breaking fields; however, even in the presence of such fields, active smectics are still much less stable against noise than equilibrium ones, when the symmetry breaking field(s) are weak., Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures

We investigate the problem of producing diverse solutions to an image super-resolution problem. From a probabilistic perspective, this can be done by sampling from the posterior distribution of an inverse problem, which requires the definition of a prior distribution on the high-resolution images. In this work, we propose to use a pretrained hierarchical variational autoencoder (HVAE) as a prior. We train a lightweight stochastic encoder to encode low-resolution images in the latent space of a pretrained HVAE. At inference, we combine the low-resolution encoder and the pretrained generative model to super-resolve an image. We demonstrate on the task of face super-resolution that our method provides an advantageous trade-off between the computational efficiency of conditional normalizing flows techniques and the sample quality of diffusion based methods., Comment: 13 pages , 6 figures

Cell monolayers are a central model system to tissue biophysics. In vivo, epithelial tissues are curved on the scale of microns, and curvature's role in the onset of spontaneous tissue flows is still not well-understood. Here, we present a hydrodynamic theory for an apical-basal asymmetric active nematic gel on a curved strip. We show that surface curvature qualitatively changes monolayer motion compared to flat space: the resulting flows can be thresholdless, and the transition to motion may change from continuous to discontinuous. We consider a core language of graph queries. These queries are seen as formulas to be solved with respect to graph-oriented databases. For this purpose, we first define a graph query algebra where some operations over graphs and sets of graph homomorphisms are specified. Then, the notion of pattern is introduced to represent a kind of recursively defined formula over graphs. The syntax and formal semantics of patterns are provided. Afterwards, we propose a new sound and complete calculus to solve patterns. This calculus, which is based on a rewriting system, develops only one derivation per pattern to be solved. Our calculus is generic in the sense that it can be adapted to different kinds of graph databases provided that the notions of graph and graph homomorphism (match) are well defined.

We derive a fully covariant theory of the hydrodynamics of nematic and polar active surfaces, subjected to internal and external forces and torques. We study the symmetries of polar and nematic surfaces and find that in addition to 5 different types of in-plane isotropic surfaces, polar and nematic surfaces can be classified into 5 polar, 2 pseudopolar, 5 nematic and 2 pseudonematic types of surfaces. We give examples of physical realisations of the different types of surfaces we have identified. We obtain expressions for the equilibrium tensions, moments, and external forces and torques acting on a passive polar or nematic surface. We calculate the entropy production rate using the framework of thermodynamics close to equilibrium and find constitutive equations for polar and nematic active surfaces with different symmetries. We study the instabilities of a confined flat planar-chiral polar active layer and of a confined deformable polar active surface with broken up-down symmetry.

Spatial organization of chromatin plays a critical role in genome regulation. Various types of affinity mediators and enzymes have been attributed to regulate spatial organization of chromatin from a thermodynamics perspective. However, at the mechanistic level, enzymes act in their unique ways. Here, we construct a polymer physics model following the mechanistic scheme of Topoisomerase-II, an enzyme resolving topological constraints of chromatin, and investigate its role on interphase chromatin organization. Our computer simulations demonstrate Topoisomerase-II's ability to phase separate chromatin into eu- and heterochromatic regions with a characteristic wall-like organization of the euchromatic regions. Exploiting a mean-field framework, we argue that the ability of the euchromatic regions crossing each other due to enzymatic activity of Topoisomerase-II induces this phase separation. Motivated from a recent experimental observation on different structural states of the eu- and the heterochromatic units, we further extend our model to a bidisperse setting and show that the characteristic features of the enzymatic activity driven phase separation survives there. The existence of these characteristic features, even under the non-localized action of the enzyme, highlights the critical role of enzymatic activity in chromatin organization, and points out the importance of further experiments along this line., Comment: 4 figures, 3 supplementary figures

We present a recently developed terahertz platform. An air plasma produced by an ultrashort two-color laser pulse serves as a broadband terahertz source, with electric field that has peak amplitude in the MV/cm range. Air biased coherent detection of the terahertz field is employed where a peak detector associated with a micro-controller board acquires the signal coming from an avalanche photodiode. The temporal and spectral profiles of the produced terahertz electric field are presented, in excellent agreement with numerical simulations of the whole setup. Sky survey telescopes and powerful targeted telescopes play complementary roles in astronomy. In order to investigate the nature and characteristics of the motions of very faint objects, a flexibly-pointed instrument capable of high astrometric accuracy is an ideal complement to current astrometric surveys and a unique tool for precision astrophysics. Such a space-based mission will push the frontier of precision astrometry from evidence of Earth-mass habitable worlds around the nearest stars, to distant Milky Way objects, and out to the Local Group of galaxies. As we enter the era of the James Webb Space Telescope and the new ground-based, adaptive-optics-enabled giant telescopes, by obtaining these high precision measurements on key objects that Gaia could not reach, a mission that focuses on high precision astrometry science can consolidate our theoretical understanding of the local Universe, enable extrapolation of physical processes to remote redshifts, and derive a much more consistent picture of cosmological evolution and the likely fate of our cosmos. Already several missions have been proposed to address the science case of faint objects in motion using high precision astrometry missions: NEAT proposed for the ESA M3 opportunity, micro-NEAT for the S1 opportunity, and Theia for the M4 and M5 opportunities. Additional new mission configurations adapted with technological innovations could be envisioned to pursue accurate measurements of these extremely small motions. Inducing and controlling the ultrafast molecular rotational dynamics using shaped laser fields is essential in numerous applications. Several approaches exist that allow following the coherent molecular motion in real-time, including Coulomb explosion-based techniques and recovering molecular orientation from the angular distribution of high harmonics. We theoretically consider a non-intrusive optical scheme for visualizing the rotational dynamics in an anisotropic molecular gas. The proposed method allows determining the instantaneous orientation of the principal optical axes of the gas. The method is based on probing the sample using ultra-short circularly polarized laser pulses and recording the transmission image through a vortex wave plate. We consider two example excitations: molecular alignment induced by an intense linearly polarized laser pulse and unidirectional molecular rotation induced by a polarization-shaped pulse. Tissues are characterized by layers of functional units such as cells and extracellular matrix (ECM). Nevertheless, how dynamics at interlayer interfaces help transmit cellular forces in tissues remains overlooked. Here, we investigate a multi-layer system where a layer of epithelial cells is seeded upon an elastic substrate in contact with a hard surface. Our experiments show that, upon a cell extrusion event in the cellular layer, long-range wave propagation emerges in the substrate only when the two substrate layers were weakly attached to each other. We then derive a theoretical model which quantitatively reproduces the wave dynamics and explains how frictional sliding between substrate layers helps propagate cellular forces at a variety of scales, depending on the stiffness, thickness, and slipperiness of the substrate. Graph query languages feature mainly two kinds of queries when applied to a graph database: those inspired by relational databases which return tables such as SELECT queries and those which return graphs such as CONSTRUCT queries in SPARQL. The latter are object of study in the present paper. For this purpose, a core graph query language GrAL is defined with focus on CONSTRUCT queries. Queries in GrAL form the final step of a recursive process involving so-called GrAL patterns. By evaluating a query over a graph one gets a graph, while by evaluating a pattern over a graph one gets a set of matches which involves both a graph and a table. CONSTRUCT queries are based on CONSTRUCT patterns, and sub-CONSTRUCT patterns come for free from the recursive definition of patterns. The semantics of GrAL is based on RDF graphs with a slight modification which consists in accepting isolated nodes. Such an extension of RDF graphs eases the definition of the evaluation semantics, which is mainly captured by a unique operation called Merge. As multi-task models gain popularity in a wider range of machine learning applications, it is becoming increasingly important for practitioners to understand the fairness implications associated with those models. Most existing fairness literature focuses on learning a single task more fairly, while how ML fairness interacts with multiple tasks in the joint learning setting is largely under-explored. In this paper, we are concerned with how group fairness (e.g., equal opportunity, equalized odds) as an ML fairness concept plays out in the multi-task scenario. In multi-task learning, several tasks are learned jointly to exploit task correlations for a more efficient inductive transfer. This presents a multi-dimensional Pareto frontier on (1) the trade-off between group fairness and accuracy with respect to each task, as well as (2) the trade-offs across multiple tasks. We aim to provide a deeper understanding on how group fairness interacts with accuracy in multi-task learning, and we show that traditional approaches that mainly focus on optimizing the Pareto frontier of multi-task accuracy might not perform well on fairness goals. We propose a new set of metrics to better capture the multi-dimensional Pareto frontier of fairness-accuracy trade-offs uniquely presented in a multi-task learning setting. We further propose a Multi-Task-Aware Fairness (MTA-F) approach to improve fairness in multi-task learning. Experiments on several real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

In this work we study the problem of measuring the fairness of a machine learning model under noisy information. Focusing on group fairness metrics, we investigate the particular but common situation when the evaluation requires controlling for the confounding effect of covariate variables. In a practical setting, we might not be able to jointly observe the covariate and group information, and a standard workaround is to then use proxies for one or more of these variables. Prior works have demonstrated the challenges with using a proxy for sensitive attributes, and strong independence assumptions are needed to provide guarantees on the accuracy of the noisy estimates. In contrast, in this work we study using a proxy for the covariate variable and present a theoretical analysis that aims to characterize weaker conditions under which accurate fairness evaluation is possible. Furthermore, our theory identifies potential sources of errors and decouples them into two interpretable parts $\gamma$ and $\epsilon$. The first part $\gamma$ depends solely on the performance of the proxy such as precision and recall, whereas the second part $\epsilon$ captures correlations between all the variables of interest. We show that in many scenarios the error in the estimates is dominated by $\gamma$ via a linear dependence, whereas the dependence on the correlations $\epsilon$ only constitutes a lower order term. As a result we expand the understanding of scenarios where measuring model fairness via proxies can be an effective approach. Finally, we compare, via simulations, the theoretical upper-bounds to the distribution of simulated estimation errors and show that assuming some structure on the data, even weak, is key to significantly improve both theoretical guarantees and empirical results.

The traditional transmission coefficient present in the original Landauer formulation, which is valid for quasi-static scenarios with working frequencies below the inverse of the electron transit time, is substituted by a novel time-dependent displacement current coefficient valid for frequencies above this limit. Our model captures in a simple way the displacement current component of the total current, which at frequencies larger than the inverse of the electron transit time can be more relevant than the particle component. The proposed model is applied to compute the response of a resonant tunneling diode from 10$\,$GHz up to 5$\,$THz. We show that tunneling electron devices are intrinsically nonlinear at such high frequencies, even under small-signal conditions, due to memory effects related to the displacement current. We show that these intrinsic nonlinearities (anharmonicities) represent an advantage, rather than a drawback, as they open the path for tunneling devices in many THz applications, and avoid further device downscaling.

In this work, we propose a framework to learn a local regularization model for solving general image restoration problems. This regularizer is defined with a fully convolutional neural network that sees the image through a receptive field corresponding to small image patches. The regularizer is then learned as a critic between unpaired distributions of clean and degraded patches using a Wasserstein generative adversarial networks based energy. This yields a regularization function that can be incorporated in any image restoration problem. Imagine a food recommender system -- how would we check if it is \emph{causing} and fostering unhealthy eating habits or merely reflecting users' interests? How much of a user's experience over time with a recommender is caused by the recommender system's choices and biases, and how much is based on the user's preferences and biases? Popularity bias and filter bubbles are two of the most well-studied recommender system biases, but most of the prior research has focused on understanding the system behavior in a single recommendation step. How do these biases interplay with user behavior, and what types of user experiences are created from repeated interactions? In this work, we offer a simulation framework for measuring the impact of a recommender system under different types of user behavior. Using this simulation framework, we can (a) isolate the effect of the recommender system from the user preferences, and (b) examine how the system performs not just on average for an "average user" but also the extreme experiences under atypical user behavior. As part of the simulation framework, we propose a set of evaluation metrics over the simulations to understand the recommender system's behavior. We propose instance segmentation as a useful tool for image analysis in materials science. Instance segmentation is an advanced technique in computer vision which generates individual segmentation masks for every object of interest that is recognized in an image. Using an out-of-the-box implementation of Mask R-CNN, instance segmentation is applied to images of metal powder particles produced through gas atomization. Leveraging transfer learning allows for the analysis to be conducted with a very small training set of labeled images. As well as providing another method for measuring the particle size distribution, we demonstrate the first direct measurements of the satellite content in powder samples. After analyzing the results for the labeled data dataset, the trained model was used to generate measurements for a much larger set of unlabeled images. The resulting particle size measurements showed reasonable agreement with laser scattering measurements. The satellite measurements were self-consistent and showed good agreement with the expected trends for different samples. Finally, we provide a small case study showing how instance segmentation can be used to measure spheroidite content in the UltraHigh Carbon Steel Database, demonstrating the flexibility of the technique., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures

We consider the recommendations of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) about RDF framework and its associated query language SPARQL. We propose a new formal framework based on category theory which provides clear and concise formal definitions of the main basic features of RDF and SPARQL. We define RDF graphs as well as SPARQL basic graph patterns as objects of some nested categories. This allows one to clarify, in particular, the role of blank nodes. We use a theoretical approach to examine the effect of a radial fluid flow or electric current on the growth and homeostasis of a cell spheroid. Such conditions may be generated by a drain of micrometric diameter. To perform this analysis, we describe the tissue as a continuum. We include active mechanical, electric, and hydraulic components in the tissue material properties. We consider a spherical geometry and study the effect of the drain on the dynamics of the cell aggregate. We show that a steady fluid flow or electric current imposed by the drain could be able to significantly change the spheroid long-time state. In particular, our work suggests that a growing spheroid can systematically be driven to a shrinking state if an appropriate external field is applied. Order-of-magnitude estimates suggest that such fields are of the order of the indigenous ones. In SPARQL, the query forms SELECT and CONSTRUCT have been the subject of several studies, both theoretical and practical. However, the composition of such queries and their interweaving when forming involved nested queries has not yet received much interest in the literature. We mainly tackle the problem of composing such queries. For this purpose, we introduce a language close to SPARQL where queries can be nested at will, involving either CONSTRUCT or SELECT query forms and provide a formal semantics for it. This semantics is based on a uniform interpretation of queries. This uniformity is due to an extension of the notion of RDF graphs to include isolated items such as variables. As a key feature of this work, we show how classical SELECT queries can be easily encoded as a particular case of CONSTRUCT queries.

Supervised Dictionary Learning has gained much interest in the recent decade and has shown significant performance improvements in image classification. However, in general, supervised learning needs a large number of labelled samples per class to achieve an acceptable result. In order to deal with databases which have just a few labelled samples per class, semi-supervised learning, which also exploits unlabelled samples in training phase is used. Indeed, unlabelled samples can help to regularize the learning model, yielding an improvement of classification accuracy. In this paper, we propose a new semi-supervised dictionary learning method based on two pillars: on one hand, we enforce manifold structure preservation from the original data into sparse code space using Locally Linear Embedding, which can be considered a regularization of sparse code; on the other hand, we train a semi-supervised classifier in sparse code space. We show that our approach provides an improvement over state-of-the-art semi-supervised dictionary learning methods.

Much of the previous machine learning (ML) fairness literature assumes that protected features such as race and sex are present in the dataset, and relies upon them to mitigate fairness concerns. However, in practice factors like privacy and regulation often preclude the collection of protected features, or their use for training or inference, severely limiting the applicability of traditional fairness research. Therefore we ask: How can we train an ML model to improve fairness when we do not even know the protected group memberships? In this work we address this problem by proposing Adversarially Reweighted Learning (ARL). In particular, we hypothesize that non-protected features and task labels are valuable for identifying fairness issues, and can be used to co-train an adversarial reweighting approach for improving fairness. We consider building predictors when the data have missing values. We study the seemingly-simple case where the target to predict is a linear function of the fully-observed data and we show that, in the presence of missing values, the optimal predictor may not be linear. In the particular Gaussian case, it can be written as a linear function of multiway interactions between the observed data and the various missing-value indicators. Due to its intrinsic complexity, we study a simple approximation and prove generalization bounds with finite samples, highlighting regimes for which each method performs best. We then show that multilayer perceptrons with ReLU activation functions can be consistent, and can explore good trade-offs between the true model and approximations. Our study highlights the interesting family of models that are beneficial to fit with missing values depending on the amount of data available.
