Direct detection experiments aimed at uncovering the elusive nature of dark matter (DM) have made significant progress in probing ever lower cross-sections for DM-nucleon interactions. At the same time, an upper limit in the cross-section sensitivity region is present due to DM scattering in the Earth and atmosphere and as a result never reaching the detector. We investigate the impact of this effect for both spin-dependent and spin-independent interactions. In contrast to previous studies that assume a straight line path for DM scattering we employ a semi-analytic diffusion model that takes into account the impact of potentially large angle deviations prevalent for light DM masses. We find that for sufficiently low energy thresholds, this difference in modelling impacts the DM interaction cross-section sensitivity. This study evaluates the impact in the context of the QUEST-DMC experiment, which utilises surface-based detectors with superfluid Helium-3 bolometers to search for sub-GeV DM exploiting low energy threshold. At masses below 1 GeV$/c^2$ the deviation between the two frameworks becomes pronounced. The ceiling sensitivity limit for QUEST-DMC on spin-dependent DM-neutron cross-sections is $\sim 3 \times 10^{-24}$ cm$^2$ using the diffusive framework and approximately doubles with the straight-line path DM scattering. Similarly, for spin-independent DM-nucleon cross-sections, the ceiling limit is $\sim 7.5 \times 10^{-27}$ cm$^2$ under the diffusive framework and also increases about a factor of two with the straight-line path approximation, within the mass range of 0.025-5 GeV$/c^2$., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

1) Objectives: This technical report presents a synthetic summary and the principal outcomes of the project R-Vessel-X ("Robust vascular network extraction and understanding within hepatic biomedical images") funded by the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche, and developed between 2019 and 2023. 2) Material and methods: We used datasets and tools publicly available such as IRCAD, Bullitt or VascuSynth toobtain real or synthetic angiographic images. The main contributions lie in the field of 3D angiographic image analysis: filtering, segmentation, modeling and simulation, with a specific focus on the liver. 3) Results: We paid a particular attention to open-source software diffusion of the developed methods, by means of 3D Slicer plugins for the liver anatomy segmentation (SlicerRVXLiverSegmentation) and vesselness filtering (Slicer-RVXVesselnessFilters), and an online demo for the generation of synthetic and realistic vessels in 2D and 3D (OpenCCO). 4) Conclusion: The R-Vessel-X project provided extensive research outcomes, covering various topics related to 3D angiographic image analysis, such as filtering, segmentation, modeling and simulation. Making errors is part of the programming process -- even for the most seasoned professionals. Novices in particular are bound to make many errors while learning. It is well known that traditional (compiler/interpreter) programming error messages have been less than helpful for many novices and can have effects such as being frustrating, containing confusing jargon, and being downright misleading. Recent work has found that large language models (LLMs) can generate excellent error explanations, but that the effectiveness of these error messages heavily depends on whether the LLM has been provided with context -- typically the original source code where the problem occurred. Knowing that programming error messages can be misleading and/or contain that serves little-to-no use (particularly for novices) we explore the reverse: what happens when GPT-3.5 is prompted for error explanations on just the erroneous source code itself -- original compiler/interpreter produced error message excluded. We utilized various strategies to make more effective error explanations, including one-shot prompting and fine-tuning. We report the baseline results of how effective the error explanations are at providing feedback, as well as how various prompting strategies might improve the explanations' effectiveness. Our results can help educators by understanding how LLMs respond to such prompts that novices are bound to make, and hopefully lead to more effective use of Generative AI in the classroom., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure

The o1 model series is trained with large-scale reinforcement learning to reason using chain of thought. These advanced reasoning capabilities provide new avenues for improving the safety and robustness of our models. In particular, our models can reason about our safety policies in context when responding to potentially unsafe prompts, through deliberative alignment. This leads to state-of-the-art performance on certain benchmarks for risks such as generating illicit advice, choosing stereotyped responses, and succumbing to known jailbreaks. Training models to incorporate a chain of thought before answering has the potential to unlock substantial benefits, while also increasing potential risks that stem from heightened intelligence. Our results underscore the need for building robust alignment methods, extensively stress-testing their efficacy, and maintaining meticulous risk management protocols. This report outlines the safety work carried out for the OpenAI o1 and OpenAI o1-mini models, including safety evaluations, external red teaming, and Preparedness Framework evaluations.

We show that the centre of the walled Brauer algebra $B_{r,1}(\delta)$ over the complex field $\mathbb{C}$, for any parameter $\delta\in \mathbb{C}$, is generated by the supersymmetric polynomials evaluated at the Jucys-Murphy elements. Moreover, we prove that its dimension is independent of the parameter $\delta$.

We consider the bidimensional Stokes problem for incompressible fluids in stream function-vorticity. For this problem, the classical finite elements method of degree one converges only to order one-half for the L2 norm of the vorticity. We propose to use harmonic functions to approach the vorticity along the boundary. Discrete harmonics are functions that are used in practice to derive a new numerical method. We prove that we obtain with this numerical scheme an error of order one for the L2 norm of the vorticity.

Aims: We aim to observe the transits and occultations of WASP-33b, which orbits a rapidly-rotating $\delta$ Scuti pulsator, with the goal of measuring the orbital obliquity via the gravity-darkening effect, and constraining the geometric albedo via the occultation depth. Methods: We observed four transits and four occultations with CHEOPS, and employ a variety of techniques to remove the effects of the stellar pulsations from the light curves, as well as the usual CHEOPS systematic effects. We also performed a comprehensive analysis of low-resolution spectral and Gaia data to re-determine the stellar properties of WASP-33. Results: We measure an orbital obliquity 111.3 +0.2 -0.7 degrees, which is consistent with previous measurements made via Doppler tomography. We also measure the planetary impact parameter, and confirm that this parameter is undergoing rapid secular evolution as a result of nodal precession of the planetary orbit. This precession allows us to determine the second-order fluid Love number of the star, which we find agrees well with the predictions of theoretical stellar models. We are unable to robustly measure a unique value of the occultation depth, and emphasise the need for long-baseline observations to better measure the pulsation periods., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures. We present the discovery of two mini Neptunes near a 2:1 orbital resonance configuration orbiting the K0 star TOI-1803. We describe their orbital architecture in detail and suggest some possible formation and evolution scenarios. Using CHEOPS, TESS, and HARPS-N datasets we can estimate the radius and the mass of both planets. We used a multidimensional Gaussian Process with a quasi-periodic kernel to disentangle the planetary components from the stellar activity in the HARPS-N dataset. We performed dynamical modeling to explain the orbital configuration and performed planetary formation and evolution simulations. For the least dense planet, we define possible atmospheric characterization scenarios with simulated JWST observations. TOI-1803 b and TOI-1803 c have orbital periods of $\sim$6.3 and $\sim$12.9 days, respectively, residing in close proximity to a 2:1 orbital resonance. Ground-based photometric follow-up observations revealed significant transit timing variations (TTV) with an amplitude of $\sim$10 min and $\sim$40 min, respectively, for planet -b and -c. With the masses computed from the radial velocities data set, we obtained a density of (0.39$\pm$0.10) $\rho_{earth}$ and (0.076$\pm$0.038) $\rho_{earth}$ for planet -b and -c, respectively. TOI-1803 c is among the least dense mini Neptunes currently known, and due to its inflated atmosphere, it is a suitable target for transmission spectroscopy with JWST. We report the discovery of two mini Neptunes close to a 2:1 orbital resonance. The detection of significant TTVs from ground-based photometry opens scenarios for a more precise mass determination. We uncover new features of generalized contextuality by connecting it to the Kirkwood-Dirac (KD) quasiprobability distribution. Quantum states can be represented by KD distributions, which take values in the complex unit disc. Only for ``KD-positive'' states are the KD distributions joint probability distributions. A KD distribution can be measured by a series of weak and projective measurements. We design such an experiment and show that it is contextual iff the underlying state is not KD-positive. We analyze this connection with respect to mixed KD-positive states that cannot be decomposed as convex combinations of pure KD-positive states. Cytology slides are essential tools in diagnosing and staging cancer, but their analysis is time-consuming and costly. Foundation models have shown great potential to assist in these tasks. In this paper, we explore how existing foundation models can be applied to cytological classification. More particularly, we focus on low-rank adaptation, a parameter-efficient fine-tuning method suited to few-shot learning. We evaluated five foundation models across four cytological classification datasets. Our results demonstrate that fine-tuning the pre-trained backbones with LoRA significantly improves model performance compared to fine-tuning only the classifier head, achieving state-of-the-art results on both simple and complex classification tasks while requiring fewer data samples., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Electrokinetic energy harvesting from evaporation-driven flows in porous materials has recently been the subject of numerous studies, particularly with the development of nanomaterials with high conversion efficiencies. The configuration in which the energy conversion element is located upstream of the element which passively drives the evaporative flow has rarely been studied. However, this configuration offers the possibility of increasing the harvested energy simply by increasing the evaporation surface area and/or the hydraulic resistance of the energy conversion element. In this work, we investigate this configuration with poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) chips playing the role of {\it artificial leaves} driving a pervaporation-induced flow through a polystyrene colloid plug in a submillimetre tube for the energy conversion. With an appropriate design of the venation of the PDMS leaves, we report the first experimental evidence of electrokinetic energy conversion from pervaporation-induced flows, which increases with the pervaporation area. We also provide new insights by demonstrating that this increase is limited by cavitation within the PDMS leaves, which occurs systematically as soon as the water pressure inside the leaf reaches $P_\text{leaf} \simeq 0$~bar. Whatever the cavitation threshold, this phenomenon imposes an intrinsic limit on this configuration, underlining the need for innovative strategies to improve the harvesting of electrokinetic energy by evaporation.

GPT-4o is an autoregressive omni model that accepts as input any combination of text, audio, image, and video, and generates any combination of text, audio, and image outputs. It's trained end-to-end across text, vision, and audio, meaning all inputs and outputs are processed by the same neural network. GPT-4o can respond to audio inputs in as little as 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds, which is similar to human response time in conversation. It matches GPT-4 Turbo performance on text in English and code, with significant improvement on text in non-English languages, while also being much faster and 50\% cheaper in the API. GPT-4o is especially better at vision and audio understanding compared to existing models. In line with our commitment to building AI safely and consistent with our voluntary commitments to the White House, we are sharing the GPT-4o System Card, which includes our Preparedness Framework evaluations. In this System Card, we provide a detailed look at GPT-4o's capabilities, limitations, and safety evaluations across multiple categories, focusing on speech-to-speech while also evaluating text and image capabilities, and measures we've implemented to ensure the model is safe and aligned. We also include third-party assessments on dangerous capabilities, as well as discussion of potential societal impacts of GPT-4o's text and vision capabilities.

We present new observations from CHEOPS and TESS to clarify the architecture of the planetary system hosted by the old Galactic thick disk star TOI-561. Our global analysis, which also includes previously published photometric and radial velocity data, incontrovertibly proves that TOI-561 is hosting at least four transiting planets with periods of 0.44 days (TOI-561 b), 10.8 days (TOI-561 c), 25.7 days (TOI-561 d), and 77.1 days (TOI-561 e) and a fifth non-transiting candidate, TOI-561f with a period of 433 days. The precise characterisation of TOI-561's orbital architecture is interesting since old and metal-poor thick disk stars are less likely to host ultra-short period Super-Earths like TOI-561 b. The new period of planet -e is consistent with the value obtained using radial velocity alone and is now known to be $77.14399\pm0.00025$ days, thanks to the new CHEOPS and TESS transits. The new data allowed us to improve its radius ($R_p = 2.517 \pm 0.045 R_{\oplus}$ from 5$\%$ to 2$\%$ precision) and mass ($M_p = 12.4 \pm 1.4 M_{\oplus}$) estimates, implying a density of $\rho_p = 0.778 \pm 0.097 \rho_{\oplus}$. Thanks to recent TESS observations and the focused CHEOPS visit of the transit of TOI-561 e, a good candidate for exomoon searches, the planet's period is finally constrained, allowing us to predict transit times through 2030 with 20-minute accuracy. Estimation algebras have been extensively studied in Euclidean space, where finite-dimensional estimation algebras form the foundation of the Kalman and Benes filters, and have contributed to the discovery of many other finite-dimensional filters. This work extends the theory of estimation algebras to filtering problems on Riemannian manifolds in continuous time. Objectives: To identify a head acceleration event (HAE) severity measure associated with HIA1 removals in elite level rugby union. Methods: HAEs were recorded from 215 men and 325 women with 30 and 28 HIA1 removals from men and women, respectively. Logistical regression were calculated to identify if peak power, maximum principal strain (MPS) and or Head Acceleration Response Metric (HARM) were associated with HIA1 events compared to non-cases. Optimal threshold values were determined using the Youden Index. Area under the curve (AUC) were compared using a paired sample approach. Significant differences were set at p<0.05. Results: All three severity measures were associated with HIA1 removals in both the mens and womens game. Power performed greatest for HIA1 removals in both the mens and womens games, based on overall AUC, sensitivity, and specificity values. HARM and MPS were found to perform lower than PLA in the womens game based on AUC comparisons (p=0.006 and 0.001, respectively), with MPS performing lower than PAA (p=0.001). Conclusion: The findings progress our understanding of HAE measures associated with HIA1 removals. Dengue virus (DENV) is a mosquito-borne virus with a significant human health concern. With 390 million infections annually and 96 million showing clinical symptoms, severe dengue can lead to life-threatening conditions like dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS). The only FDA-approved vaccine, Dengvaxia, has limitations due to antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE), necessitating careful administration. The recent pre-approval of TAK-003 by WHO in 2024 highlights ongoing efforts to improve vaccine options. We review and provide new proofs of results used to compare the efficiency of estimates generated by reversible MCMC algorithms on a general state space. We provide a full proof of the formula for the asymptotic variance for real-valued functionals on $\phi$-irreducible reversible Markov chains, first introduced by Kipnis and Varadhan. Given two Markov kernels $P$ and $Q$ with stationary measure $\pi$, we say that the Markov kernel $P$ efficiency dominates the Markov kernel $Q$ if the asymptotic variance with respect to $P$ is at most the asymptotic variance with respect to $Q$ for every real-valued functional $f\in L^2(\pi)$. Assuming only a basic background in functional analysis, we prove that for two $\phi$-irreducible reversible Markov kernels $P$ and $Q$, $P$ efficiency dominates $Q$ if and only if the operator $Q-P$, where $P$ is the operator on $L^2(\pi)$ that maps $f\mapsto\int f(y)P(\cdot,dy)$ and similarly for $Q$, is positive on $L^2(\pi)$, i.e. $\langle f,(Q-P)f\rangle\geq0$ for every $f\in L^2(\pi)$. We use this result to show that reversible antithetic kernels are more efficient than i.i.d. sampling, and that efficiency dominance is a partial ordering on $\phi$-irreducible reversible Markov kernels. We also provide a proof based on that of Tierney that Peskun dominance is a sufficient condition for efficiency dominance for reversible kernels. Using these results, we show that Markov kernels formed by randomly selecting other "component" Markov kernels will always efficiency dominate another Markov kernel formed in this way, as long as the component kernels of the former efficiency dominate those of the latter. We investigate exact nonlinear waves on surfaces locally approximating the rotating sphere for two-dimensional inviscid incompressible flow. Our first system corresponds to a beta-plane approximation at the equator and the second to a gamma approximation, with the latter describing flow near the poles. We find exact wave solutions in the Lagrangian reference frame that cannot be written down in closed form in the Eulerian reference frame. The wave particle trajectories, contours of potential vorticity and Lagrangian mean velocity take relatively simple forms. The waves possess a non-trivial Lagrangian mean flow that depends on the amplitude of the waves and on a particle label that characterizes values of constant potential vorticity. The mean flow arises due to potential vorticity conservation on fluid particles. Solutions over the entire space are generated by assuming that the flow far from the origin is zonal and there is a region of constant potential vorticity between this zonal flow and the waves. In the gamma approximation a class of waves are found which, based on analogous solutions on the plane, we call Ptolemaic vortex waves. The mean flow of some of these waves resemble polar jet streams. Several illustrative solutions are used as initial conditions in the fully spherical rotating Navier-Stokes equations, where integration is performed via the numerical scheme presented in Salmon and Pizzo (2023). The potential vorticity contours found from these numerical experiments vary between stable permanent progressive form and fully turbulent flows generated by wave breaking.

Multi-agent human-robot co-manipulation is a poorly understood process with many inputs that potentially affect agent behavior. This paper explores one such input known as interaction force. Interaction force is potentially a primary component in communication that occurs during co-manipulation. There are, however, many different perspectives and definitions of interaction force in the literature. Therefore, a decomposition of interaction force is proposed that provides a consistent way of ascertaining the state of an agent relative to the group for multi-agent co-manipulation. This proposed method extends a current definition from one to four degrees of freedom, does not rely on a predefined object path, and is independent of the number of agents acting on the system and their locations and input wrenches (forces and torques). We report the spectroscopic confirmation and fundamental properties of TOI-757 b, a mini-Neptune on a 17.5-day orbit transiting a bright star ($V = 9.7$ mag) discovered by the TESS mission. We acquired high-precision radial velocity measurements with the HARPS, ESPRESSO, and PFS spectrographs to confirm the planet detection and determine its mass. We also acquired space-borne transit photometry with the CHEOPS space telescope to place stronger constraints on the planet radius, supported with ground-based LCOGT photometry. WASP and KELT photometry were used to help constrain the stellar rotation period. We also determined the fundamental parameters of the host star. We find that TOI-757 b has a radius of $R_{\mathrm{p}} = 2.5 \pm 0.1 R_{\oplus}$ and a mass of $M_{\mathrm{p}} = 10.5^{+2.2}_{-2.1} M_{\oplus}$, implying a bulk density of $\rho_{\text{p}} = 3.6 \pm 0.8$ g cm$^{-3}$. Our internal composition modeling was unable to constrain the composition of TOI-757 b, highlighting the importance of atmospheric observations for the system. We also find the planet to be highly eccentric with $e$ = 0.39$^{+0.08}_{-0.07}$, making it one of the very few highly eccentric planets among precisely characterized mini-Neptunes. Based on comparisons to other similar eccentric systems, we find a likely scenario for TOI-757 b's formation to be high eccentricity migration due to a distant outer companion. We additionally propose the possibility of a more intrinsic explanation for the high eccentricity due to star-star interactions during the earlier epoch of the Galactic disk formation, given the low metallicity and older age of TOI-757., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 26 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables

Medical imaging technologies have undergone extensive development, enabling non-invasive visualization of clinical information. The traditional review of medical images by clinicians remains subjective, time-consuming, and prone to human error. With the recent availability of medical imaging data, quantification have become important goals in the field. Radiomics, a methodology aimed at extracting quantitative information from imaging data, has emerged as a promising approach to uncover hidden biological information and support decision-making in clinical practice. This paper presents a review of the radiomic pipeline from the clinical neuroimaging perspective, providing a detailed overview of each step with practical advice. It discusses the application of handcrafted and deep radiomics in neuroimaging, stratified by neurological diagnosis. Although radiomics shows great potential for increasing diagnostic precision and improving treatment quality in neurology, several limitations hinder its clinical implementation. Addressing these challenges requires collaborative efforts, advancements in image harmonization methods, and the establishment of reproducible and standardized pipelines with transparent reporting. By overcoming these obstacles, radiomics can significantly impact clinical neurology and enhance patient care.

Among the thousands of exoplanets discovered to date, approximately a few hundred gas giants on short-period orbits are classified as "lonely" and only a few are in a multi-planet system with a smaller companion on a close orbit. The processes that formed multi-planet systems hosting gas giants on close orbits are poorly understood, and only a few examples of this kind of system have been observed and well characterised. Within the contest of multi-planet system hosting gas-giant on short orbits, we characterise TOI-1130 system by measuring masses and orbital parameters. This is a 2-transiting planet system with a Jupiter-like planet (c) on a 8.35 days orbit and a Neptune-like planet (b) on an inner (4.07 days) orbit. Both planets show strong anti-correlated transit timing variations (TTVs). Furthermore, radial velocity (RV) analysis showed an additional linear trend, a possible hint of a non-transiting candidate planet on a far outer orbit. Since 2019, extensive transit and radial velocity observations of the TOI-1130 have been acquired using TESS and various ground-based facilities. We present a new photo-dynamical analysis of all available transit and RV data, with the addition of new CHEOPS and ASTEP+ data that achieve the best precision to date on the planetary radii and masses and on the timings of each transit. We were able to model interior structure of planet b constraining the presence of a gaseous envelope of H/He, while it was not possible to assess the possible water content. Furthermore, we analysed the resonant state of the two transiting planets, and we found that they lie just outside the resonant region. This could be the result of the tidal evolution that the system underwent. We obtained both masses of the planets with a precision less than 1.5%, and radii with a precision of about 1% and 3% for planet b and c, respectively., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication by Astronomy and Astrophysics

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Deep learning models for plant species identification rely on large annotated datasets. The PlantNet system enables global data collection by allowing users to upload and annotate plant observations, leading to noisy labels due to diverse user skills. Achieving consensus is crucial for training, but the vast scale of collected data makes traditional label aggregation strategies challenging. Existing methods either retain all observations, resulting in noisy training data or selectively keep those with sufficient votes, discarding valuable information. Additionally, as many species are rarely observed, user expertise can not be evaluated as an inter-user agreement: otherwise, botanical experts would have a lower weight in the AI training step than the average user. Our proposed label aggregation strategy aims to cooperatively train plant identification AI models. This strategy estimates user expertise as a trust score per user based on their ability to identify plant species from crowdsourced data. The trust score is recursively estimated from correctly identified species given the current estimated labels. This interpretable score exploits botanical experts' knowledge and the heterogeneity of users. Subsequently, our strategy removes unreliable observations but retains those with limited trusted annotations, unlike other approaches. We evaluate PlantNet's strategy on a released large subset of the PlantNet database focused on European flora, comprising over 6M observations and 800K users. We demonstrate that estimating users' skills based on the diversity of their expertise enhances labeling performance. Our findings emphasize the synergy of human annotation and data filtering in improving AI performance for a refined dataset. We explore incorporating AI-based votes alongside human input. This can further enhance human-AI interactions to detect unreliable observations.

A central problem in quantum information is determining quantum-classical boundaries. A useful notion of classicality is provided by the quasiprobability formulation of quantum theory. In this framework, a state is called classical if it is represented by a quasiprobability distribution that is positive, and thus a probability distribution. In recent years, the Kirkwood-Dirac (KD) distributions have gained much interest due to their numerous applications in modern quantum-information research. A particular advantage of the KD distributions is that they can be defined with respect to arbitrary observables. Here, we show that if two observables are picked at random, the set of classical states of the resulting KD distribution is a simple polytope of minimal size. When the Hilbert space is of dimension $d$, this polytope is of dimension $2d-1$ and has $2d$ known vertices. Ribonucleic acids (RNA) are unique in that they can store genetic information, replicate and perform catalysis. Importantly, RNA molecules are highly dynamic, and thus determining the ensemble of conformations that they populate is crucial not only to elucidate their biological functions, but also for their potential use as therapeutic targets. Computational and experimental techniques provide complementary views on RNA dynamics, and their integration is fundamental to improve the accuracy of computations and the resolution of experiments. Recent exciting developments in this field, were discussed at the CECAM workshop ``RNA dynamics from experimental and computational approaches'', in Paris, June 26-28, 2023. This report outlines key `take-home' messages that emerged during this workshop from the presentations and discussions.

The James-Stein estimator is a biased estimator -- for a finite number of samples its expected value is not the true mean. The maximum-likelihood estimator (MLE), is unbiased and asymptotically optimal. Yet, when estimating the mean of $3$ or more normally-distributed random variables, the James-Stein estimator has a smaller total (expected) error than the MLE. We introduce the James-Stein estimator to the field of quantum metrology, from both the frequentist and Bayesian perspectives. We characterise the effect of quantum phenomena on the James-Stein estimator through the lens of quantum Gaussian sensing, the task of estimating the mean of an unknown multivariate quantum Gaussian state. We find that noiseless entanglement or coherence improves performance of the James-Stein estimator, but diminishes its advantage over the MLE. In the presence of noise, the James-Stein advantage is restored. Quantum effects can also boost the James-Stein advantage. We demonstrate this by investigating multivariate postselective metrology (generalised weak-value amplification), a strategy that uses quantum effects to measure parameters with imperfect detectors. Simply by post-processing measured data differently, our techniques reduce errors in quantum experiments.

We aim to constrain the internal structure and composition of HD 15337 b and c, two short-period planets situated on opposite sides of the radius valley, using new transit photometry and radial velocity data. We acquire 6 new transit visits with the CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite (CHEOPS) and 32 new radial velocity measurements from the High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) to improve the accuracy of the mass and radius estimates for both planets. We reanalyse light curves from TESS sectors 3 and 4 and analyse new data from sector 30, correcting for long-term stellar activity. Subsequently, we perform a joint fit of the TESS and CHEOPS light curves, and all available RV data from HARPS and the Planet Finder Spectrograph (PFS). Our model fits the planetary signals, the stellar activity signal and the instrumental decorrelation model for the CHEOPS data simultaneously. The stellar activity was modelled using a Gaussian-process regression on both the RV and activity indicators. We finally employ a Bayesian retrieval code to determine the internal composition and structure of the planets. We derive updated and highly precise parameters for the HD 15337 system. Our improved precision on the planetary parameters makes HD 15337 b one of the most precisely characterised rocky exoplanets, with radius and mass measurements achieving a precision better than 2\% and 7\%, respectively. We are able to improve the precision of the radius measurement of HD 15337 c to 3\%. Our results imply that the composition of HD 15337 b is predominantly rocky, while HD 15337 c exhibits a gas envelope with a mass of at least $0.01\ M_\oplus$.Our results lay the groundwork for future studies, which can further unravel the atmospheric evolution of these exoplanets and give new insights into their composition and formation history and the causes behind the radius gap., Comment: 17 pages, including appendix

We report the results of radioactivity assays and heat leak calculations for a range of common cryogenic materials, considered for use in the QUEST-DMC superfluid 3He dark matter detector. The bolometer, instrumented with nanomechanical resonators, will be sensitive to energy deposits from dark matter interactions. Events from radioactive decays and cosmic rays constitute a significant background and must be precisely modelled, using a combination of material screening and Monte Carlo simulations. However, the results presented here are of wider interest for experiments and quantum devices sensitive to minute heat leaks and spurious events, thus we present heat leak per unit mass or surface area for every material studied. This can inform material choices for other experiments, especially if underground operation is considered where the radiogenic backgrounds will dominate even at shallow depths.

We show that under some conditions, two constructions of nearby cycles over general bases coincide. More specifically, we show that under the assumption of $\Psi$-factorizability, the constructions of unipotent nearby cycles over an affine space can be described using the theory of nearby cycles over general bases via the vanishing topos. In particular, this applies to nearby cycles of Satake sheaves on Beilinson-Drinfeld Grassmannians with parahoric ramification., Comment: 18 pages

Recent asteroseismic studies have revealed that the convective core of $\gamma$ Doradus stars rotates faster than their radiative interior. We study the development of differential rotation near the convective core to test angular momentum transport processes that are typically adopted in stellar evolution models. Models that only include the advection of angular momentum by meridional circulation and shear instabilities cannot reproduce current rotational constraints, irrespective of the initial conditions. The latest formulation of internal magnetic fields based on the Tayler instability is indeed able to reproduce the internal rotation rate of post-main sequence stars, however, it appears too efficient during the main sequence and has thus been disfavoured. A less efficient version of the same transport process can simultaneously reproduce the rotation rate of the convective core, the rotation rate in radiative regions as probed by gravity-modes, and the surface rotational velocities of $\gamma$ Doradus stars. We have developed a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microfluidic chip to study the directional drying of a colloidal dispersion confined in a channel. Our measurements on a dispersion of silica nanoparticles once again revealed the phenomenology commonly observed for such systems: the formation of a porous solid with linear growth in the channel at short times, slowing down at longer times as the evaporation rate decreases. The growth of the solid is also accompanied by mechanical stresses that are released by the delamination of the solid from the channel walls and the formation of cracks. In addition to these observations, we report original measurements using hydrophilic filler in the PDMS formulation used (Sylgard-184). When the PDMS matrix is in contact with water, water molecules pool around these hydrophilic sites, resulting in the formation of microscopic water clusters whose size depends on the water potential $\psi$. In our work, we have used these water clusters to estimate the water potential profile in the channel as the porous solid grows. Using a transport model that also takes into account solid delamination in the channel, we then linked these water potential measurements to the hydraulic permeability of the porous solid. These measurements finally enabled us to show that the slowdown in the evaporation rate is due to the invasion of the porous solid by air/water nanomenisci at a critical capillary pressure $\psi_\text{cap}$.

The stabiliser formalism plays a central role in quantum computing, error correction, and fault tolerance. Conversions between and verifications of different specifications of stabiliser states and Clifford gates are important components of many classical algorithms in quantum information, e.g. for gate synthesis, circuit optimisation, and simulating quantum circuits. These core functions are also used in the numerical experiments critical to formulating and testing mathematical conjectures on the stabiliser formalism. We develop novel mathematical insights concerning stabiliser states and Clifford gates that significantly clarify their descriptions. We then utilise these to provide ten new fast algorithms which offer asymptotic advantages over any existing implementations. We show how to rapidly verify that a vector is a stabiliser state, and interconvert between its specification as amplitudes, a quadratic form, and a check matrix. These methods are leveraged to rapidly check if a given unitary matrix is a Clifford gate and to interconvert between the matrix of a Clifford gate and its compact specification as a stabiliser tableau. For example, we extract the stabiliser tableau of a $2^n \times 2^n$ matrix, promised to be a Clifford gate, in $O(n 2^n)$ time. Remarkably, it is not necessary to read all the elements of a Clifford gate matrix to extract its stabiliser tableau. This is an asymptotic speedup over the best-known method that is exponential in the number of qubits. Networks or graphs are widely used across the sciences to represent relationships of many kinds. igraph (https://igraph.org) is a general-purpose software library for graph construction, analysis, and visualisation, combining fast and robust performance with a low entry barrier. igraph pairs a fast core written in C with beginner-friendly interfaces in Python, R, and Mathematica. Over the last two decades, igraph has expanded substantially. It now scales to billions of edges, supports Mathematica and interactive plotting, integrates with Jupyter notebooks and other network libraries, includes new graph layouts and community detection algorithms, and has streamlined the documentation with examples and Spanish translations. Modern testing features such as continuous integration, address sanitizers, stricter typing, and memory-managed vectors have also increased robustness. Hundreds of bug reports have been fixed and a community forum has been opened to connect users and developers. Occultations are windows of opportunity to indirectly peek into the dayside atmosphere of exoplanets. High-precision transit events provide information on the spin-orbit alignment of exoplanets around fast-rotating hosts. We aim to precisely measure the planetary radius and geometric albedo of the ultra-hot Jupiter (UHJ) KELT-20 b as well as the system's spin-orbit alignment. We obtained optical high-precision transits and occultations of KELT-20 b using CHEOPS observations in conjunction with the simultaneous TESS observations. We interpret the occultation measurements together with archival infrared observations to measure the planetary geometric albedo and dayside temperatures. We further use the host star's gravity-darkened nature to measure the system's obliquity. We present time-averaged precise occultation depth of 82(6) ppm measured with seven CHEOPS visits and 131(+8/-7) ppm from the analysis of all available TESS photometry. Using these measurements, we precisely constrain the geometric albedo of KELT-20 b to 0.26(0.04) and the brightness temperature of the dayside hemisphere to 2566(+77/-80) K. Assuming Lambertian scattering law, we constrain the Bond albedo to 0.36(+0.04/-0.05) along with a minimal heat transfer to the nightside. Furthermore, using five transit observations we provide stricter constraints of 3.9(1.1) degrees on the sky-projected obliquity of the system. The aligned orbit of KELT-20 b is in contrast to previous CHEOPS studies that have found strongly inclined orbits for planets orbiting other A-type stars. KELT-20 b's comparably high planetary geometric albedo corroborates a known trend of strongly irradiated planets being more reflective. Fabrication of superconducting nanomechanical resonators for quantum research, detectors and devices traditionally relies on a lithographic process, resulting in oscillators with sharp edges and a suspended length limited to a few 100 micrometres. We report a low-investment top-down approach to fabricating NbTi nanowire resonators with suspended lengths up to several millimetres and diameters down to 100 nanometres. The nanowires possess high critical currents and fields, making them a natural choice for magnetomotive actuation and sensing. This fabrication technique is independent of the substrate material, dimensions and layout and can readily be adapted to fabricate nanowire resonators from any metal or alloy with suitable ductility and yield strength. Our work thus opens access to a new class of nanomechanical devices with applications including microscopic and mesoscopic investigations of quantum fluids, detecting dark matter and fundamental materials research in one-dimensional superconductors in vacuum., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

Traditional supervised denoisers are trained using pairs of noisy input and clean target images. They learn to predict a central tendency of the posterior distribution over possible clean images. When, e.g., trained with the popular quadratic loss function, the network's output will correspond to the minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimate. Unsupervised denoisers based on Variational AutoEncoders (VAEs) have succeeded in achieving state-of-the-art results while requiring only unpaired noisy data as training input. In contrast to the traditional supervised approach, unsupervised denoisers do not directly produce a single prediction, such as the MMSE estimate, but allow us to draw samples from the posterior distribution of clean solutions corresponding to the noisy input. To approximate the MMSE estimate during inference, unsupervised methods have to create and draw a large number of samples - a computationally expensive process - rendering the approach inapplicable in many situations. Here, we present an alternative approach that trains a deterministic network alongside the VAE to directly predict a central tendency. Our method achieves results that surpass the results achieved by the unsupervised method at a fraction of the computational cost.

Achieving thermal equilibrium in two-dimensional lattices of interacting nanomagnets has been a key issue on the route to study exotic phases in artificial frustrated magnets. We revisit this issue in artificial one-dimensional kagom\'e spin chains. Imaging arrested micro-states generated by a field demagnetization protocol and analyzing their pairwise spin correlations in real space, we unveil a non-equilibrated physics. Remarkably, this physics can be reformulated into an at-equilibrium one by rewriting the associated spin Hamiltonian in such a way that one of the coupling constants is quenched. We ascribe this effective behavior to a kinetic hinderance during the demagnetization protocol, which induces the formation of local flux closure spin configurations that sometimes compete with the magnetostatic interaction., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

The focus of dark matter searches to date has been on Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) in the GeV/$c^2$-TeV/$c^2$ mass range. The direct, indirect and collider searches in this mass range have been extensive but ultimately unsuccessful, providing a strong motivation for widening the search outside this range. Here we describe a new concept for a dark matter experiment, employing superfluid $^3$He as a detector for dark matter that is close to the mass of the proton, of order 1 GeV/$c^2$. The QUEST-DMC detector concept is based on quasiparticle detection in a bolometer cell by a nanomechanical resonator. In this paper we develop the energy measurement methodology and detector response model, simulate candidate dark matter signals and expected background interactions, and calculate the sensitivity of such a detector. We project that such a detector can reach sub-eV nuclear recoil energy threshold, opening up new windows on the parameter space of both spin-dependent and spin-independent interactions of light dark matter candidates., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. Accurate analysis of microscopy images is hindered by the presence of noise. This noise is usually signal-dependent and often additionally correlated along rows or columns of pixels. Current self- and unsupervised denoisers can address signal-dependent noise, but none can reliably remove noise that is also row- or column-correlated. Here, we present the first fully unsupervised deep learning-based denoiser capable of handling imaging noise that is row-correlated as well as signal-dependent. Our approach uses a Variational Autoencoder (VAE) with a specially designed autoregressive decoder. This decoder is capable of modeling row-correlated and signal-dependent noise but is incapable of independently modeling underlying clean signal. The VAE therefore produces latent variables containing only clean signal information, and these are mapped back into image space using a proposed second decoder network. Our method does not require a pre-trained noise model and can be trained from scratch using unpaired noisy data. We revisit the problem of characterising the complexity of Quantum PAC learning, as introduced by Bshouty and Jackson [SIAM J. Comput. 1998, 28, 1136-1153]. Several quantum advantages have been demonstrated in this setting, however, none are generic: they apply to particular concept classes and typically only work when the distribution that generates the data is known. In the general case, it was recently shown by Arunachalam and de Wolf [JMLR, 19 (2018) 1-36] that quantum PAC learners can only achieve constant factor advantages over classical PAC learners. We show that with a natural extension of the definition of quantum PAC learning used by Arunachalam and de Wolf, we can achieve a generic advantage in quantum learning. To be precise, for any concept class $\mathcal{C}$ of VC dimension $d$, we show there is an $(\epsilon, \delta)$-quantum PAC learner with sample complexity \[ O\left(\frac{1}{\sqrt{\epsilon}}\left[d+ \log(\frac{1}{\delta})\right]\log^9(1/\epsilon)\right). \] Up to polylogarithmic factors, this is a square root improvement over the classical learning sample complexity. We show the tightness of our result by proving an $\Omega(d/\sqrt{\epsilon})$ lower bound that matches our upper bound up to polylogarithmic factors.

In quantum metrology, information about unknown parameters $\mathbf{\theta} = (\theta_1,\ldots,\theta_M)$ is accessed by measuring probe states $\hat{\rho}_{\mathbf{\theta}}$. A subset of the vertex set of a graph is geodetically convex if it contains every vertex on any shortest path between two elements of the set. The convex hull of a set of vertices is the smallest convex set containing the set. We study variations of two games introduced by Buckley and Harary, where two players take turns selecting previously-unselected vertices of a graph until the convex hull of the jointly-selected vertices becomes too large. The last player to move is the winner. The achievement game ends when the convex hull contains every vertex. In the avoidance game, the convex hull is not allowed to contain every vertex. We present a fresh perspective on shot noise corrupted images and noise removal. By viewing image formation as the sequential accumulation of photons on a detector grid, we show that a network trained to predict where the next photon could arrive is in fact solving the minimum mean square error (MMSE) denoising task. This new perspective allows us to make three contributions: We present a new strategy for self-supervised denoising, We present a new method for sampling from the posterior of possible solutions by iteratively sampling and adding small numbers of photons to the image. We derive a full generative model by starting this process from an empty canvas. We call this approach generative accumulation of photons (GAP). We evaluate our method quantitatively and qualitatively on 4 new fluorescence microscopy datasets, which will be made available to the community. The potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in digital pathology is limited by technical inconsistencies in the production of whole slide images (WSIs), leading to degraded AI performance and posing a challenge for widespread clinical application as fine-tuning algorithms for each new site is impractical. Changes in the imaging workflow can also lead to compromised diagnoses and patient safety risks. We evaluated whether physical color calibration of scanners can standardize WSI appearance and enable robust AI performance. We employed a color calibration slide in four different laboratories and evaluated its impact on the performance of an AI system for prostate cancer diagnosis on 1,161 WSIs. Color standardization resulted in consistently improved AI model calibration and significant improvements in Gleason grading performance. The study demonstrates that physical color calibration provides a potential solution to the variation introduced by different scanners, making AI-based cancer diagnostics more reliable and applicable in clinical settings.

Multi-planet systems are important sources of information regarding the evolution of planets. However, the long-period planets in these systems often escape detection. HD 22946 is a bright star around which 3 transiting planets were identified via TESS photometry, but the true orbital period of the outermost planet d was unknown until now. We aim to use CHEOPS to uncover the true orbital period of HD 22946d and to refine the orbital and planetary properties of the system, especially the radii of the planets. We used the available TESS photometry of HD 22946 and observed several transits of the planets b, c, and d using CHEOPS. We identified 2 transits of planet d in the TESS photometry, calculated the most probable period aliases based on these data, and then scheduled CHEOPS observations. The photometric data were supplemented with ESPRESSO radial velocity data. Finally, a combined model was fitted to the entire dataset. We successfully determined the true orbital period of the planet d to be 47.42489 $\pm$ 0.00011 d, and derived precise radii of the planets in the system, namely 1.362 $\pm$ 0.040 R$_\oplus$, 2.328 $\pm$ 0.039 R$_\oplus$, and 2.607 $\pm$ 0.060 R$_\oplus$ for planets b, c, and d, respectively. Due to the low number of radial velocities, we were only able to determine 3$\sigma$ upper limits for these respective planet masses, which are 13.71 M$_\oplus$, 9.72 M$_\oplus$, and 26.57 M$_\oplus$. We estimated that another 48 ESPRESSO radial velocities are needed to measure the predicted masses of all planets in HD 22946. Planet c appears to be a promising target for future atmospheric characterisation. We can also conclude that planet d, as a warm sub-Neptune, is very interesting because there are only a few similar confirmed exoplanets to date. Such objects are worth investigating in the near future, for example in terms of their composition and internal structure.

A large sample of long-period giant planets has been discovered thanks to long-term radial velocity surveys, but only a few dozen of these planets have a precise radius measurement. Transiting gas giants are crucial targets for the study of atmospheric composition across a wide range of equilibrium temperatures and for shedding light on the formation and evolution of planetary systems. Indeed, compared to hot Jupiters, the atmospheric properties and orbital parameters of cooler gas giants are unaltered by intense stellar irradiation and tidal effects. We identify long-period planets in the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data as duo-transit events. To solve the orbital periods of TESS duo-transit candidates, we use the CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite (CHEOPS) to observe the highest-probability period aliases in order to discard or confirm a transit event at a given period. We also collect spectroscopic observations with CORALIE and HARPS in order to confirm the planetary nature and measure the mass of the candidates. We report the discovery of a warm transiting Neptune-mass planet orbiting TOI-5678. After four non-detections corresponding to possible periods, CHEOPS detected a transit event matching a unique period alias. Joint modeling reveals that TOI-5678 hosts a 47.73 day period planet. TOI-5678 b has a mass of 20 (+-4) Me and a radius of 4.91 (+-0.08 Re) . Using interior structure modeling, we find that TOI-5678 b is composed of a low-mass core surrounded by a large H/He layer with a mass of 3.2 (+1.7, -1.3) Me. TOI-5678 b is part of a growing sample of well-characterized transiting gas giants receiving moderate amounts of stellar insolation (11 Se). We show that Lusztig's theories of two-sided cells and non-unipotent representations of a reductive group over a finite field are compatible with the V. Lafforgue's automorphic-to-galois direction of the Langlands correspondence. To do this, we extend cases where nearby cycles commutes with pushforward from sheaves on the moduli space of shtukas to a product of curves to include certain depth $0$ cases. More generally, we introduce the notion of $\Psi$-factorizability to study nearby cycles over general bases, whereby a sheaf is $\Psi$-factorizable if its nearby cycles are the same as iterated nearby cycles with respect to arbitrary compositions of specializations on the base. The Satake sheaves on Beilinson-Drinfeld grassmannians and their cohomology sheaves on curves are nontrivial examples of $\Psi$-factorizable sheaves. This notion allows us to adapt arguments from Xue. Context. Asteroseismic studies showed that cores of post main-sequence stars rotate slower than theoretically predicted by stellar models with purely hydrodynamical transport processes. Recent studies on main sequence stars, particularly Gamma Doradus ($\gamma$ Dor) stars, revealed their internal rotation rate for hundreds of stars, offering a counterpart on the main sequence for studies of angular momentum transport. Aims. We investigate whether such a disagreement between observed and predicted internal rotation rates is present in main sequence stars by studying angular momentum transport in $\gamma$ Dor stars. Furthermore, we test whether models of rotating stars with internal magnetic fields can reproduce their rotational properties. Methods. We compute rotating models with the Geneva stellar evolution code taking into account meridional circulation and the shear instability. We also compute models with internal magnetic fields using a general formalism for transport by the Tayler-Spruit dynamo. We then compare these models to observational constraints for $\gamma$ Dor stars that we compiled from the literature, combining so the core rotation rates, projected rotational velocities from spectroscopy, and constraints on their fundamental parameters. Results. We show that combining the different observational constraints available for $\gamma$ Dor stars enable to clearly distinguish the different scenarios for internal angular momentum transport. Stellar models with purely hydrodynamical processes are in disagreement with the data whereas models with internal magnetic fields can reproduce both core and surface constraints simultaneously. Conclusions. Similarly to results obtained for subgiant and red giant stars, angular momentum transport in radiative regions of $\gamma$ Dor stars is highly efficient, in good agreement with predictions of models with internal magnetic fields., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 16 pages, 17 figures, 1 appendix

Average-K classification is an alternative to top-K classification in which the number of labels returned varies with the ambiguity of the input image but must average to K over all the samples. A simple method to solve this task is to threshold the softmax output of a model trained with the cross-entropy loss. This approach is theoretically proven to be asymptotically consistent, but it is not guaranteed to be optimal for a finite set of samples. In this paper, we propose a new loss function based on a multi-label classification head in addition to the classical softmax. This second head is trained using pseudo-labels generated by thresholding the softmax head while guaranteeing that K classes are returned on average. We show that this approach allows the model to better capture ambiguities between classes and, as a result, to return more consistent sets of possible classes. Experiments on two datasets from the literature demonstrate that our approach outperforms the softmax baseline, as well as several other loss functions more generally designed for weakly supervised multi-label classification. The gains are larger the higher the uncertainty, especially for classes with few samples.
