We present progress in trying to verify a long-standing conjecture by Mark Mahowald on the $v_{1}$-periodic component of the classical Adams spectral sequence for a Moore space $M$. The approach we follow was proposed by John Palmieri in his work on the stable category of $A$-comodules. We improve on Palmieri's work by working with the endomorphism ring of $M$ - $End(M)$ thus resolving some of the initial difficulties of his approach and formulating a conjecture of our own that would lead to Mahowald's formulation.

This paper presents the first MD simulations of a model, which we have designed for understanding the development of electro-induced instability of a thin toluene emulsion film in contact with saline aqueous phase. This study demonstrates the charge accumulation role in toluene film rupture when a DC electric field is applied. The critical value of the external field at which film ruptures, thin film charge distribution, capacitance, number densities and film structure have been obtained in simulating the system within NVT and NPT ensembles. A mechanism of thin film rupture driven by the electric discharge is suggested.We show that NPT ensemble with a constant surface tension is a better choice for further modeling of the systems that resemble more close the real films., Comment: 16 pages, 25 figures

Consider two bounded domains $\Omega$ and $\Lambda$ in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$, and two sufficiently regular probability measures $\mu$ and $\nu$ supported on them. By Brenier's theorem, there exists a unique transportation map $T$ satisfying $T_\#\mu=\nu$ and minimizing the quadratic cost $\int_{\mathbb{R}^{n}}|T(x)-x|^{2}d\mu(x)$. Furthermore, by Caffarelli's regularity theory for the real Monge--Amp\`ere equations, if $\Lambda$ is convex, $T$ is continuous. We study the reverse problem, namely, when is $T$ discontinuous if $\Lambda$ fails to be convex? We prove a result guaranteeing the discontinuity of $T$ in terms of the geometries of $\Lambda$ and $\Omega$ in the two-dimensional case. The main idea is to use tools of convex analysis and the extrinsic geometry of $\partial\Lambda$ to distinguish between Brenier and Alexandrov weak solutions of the Monge--Amp\`ere equation. We also use this approach to give a new proof of a result due to Wolfson and Urbas. We conclude by revisiting an example of Caffarelli, giving a detailed study of a discontinuous map between two explicit domains, and determining precisely where the discontinuities occur., Comment: Final version, to appear in the Journal of Topology and Analysis

The conflicts between armed groups often go on for years. The classical model of such conflicts accounts for the number of participants and for the technology level of the equipment of the groups. Below we extend this model in order to account for events that are present for limited time. As examples we discuss three kinds of such events: inclusion of reserves, presence of epidemics and use of non-conventional weapons. The human society today is far from perfection and conflicts between groups of humans are frequent events. One example for such conflicts are armed intergroup conflicts. The collective behavior of the large number of cooperating participants in these conflicts allows us to describe the conflict on the basis of models containing only few variables. In this paper we discuss several cases of conflicts without use of weapons of non-conventional kind. In the ancient times the Chinese writer Sun Tsu mentioned that the war is an art. The classical Lorenz lowest order system of three nonlinear ordinary differential equations, capable of producing chaotic solutions, has been generalized by various authors in two main directions: (i) for number of equations larger than three (Curry1978) and (ii) for the case of complex variables and parameters. Problems of laser physics and geophysical fluid dynamics (baroclinic instability, geodynamic theory, etc. - see the references) can be related to this second aspect of generalization.
