The design process of centrifugal compressors requires applying an optimization process which is computationally expensive due to complex analytical equations underlying the compressor's dynamical equations. Although the regression surrogate models could drastically reduce the computational cost of such a process, the major challenge is the scarcity of data for training the surrogate model. Aiming to strategically exploit the labeled samples, we propose the Active-CompDesign framework in which we combine a thermodynamics-based compressor model (i.e., our internal software for compressor design) and Gaussian Process-based surrogate model within a deployable Active Learning (AL) setting. We first conduct experiments in an offline setting and further, extend it to an online AL framework where a real-time interaction with the thermodynamics-based compressor's model allows the deployment in production. ActiveCompDesign shows a significant performance improvement in surrogate modeling by leveraging on uncertainty-based query function of samples within the AL framework with respect to the random selection of data points. In recent years, the number of IoT devices has been growing fast which leads to a challenging task for managing, storing, analyzing, and making decisions about raw data from different IoT devices, especially for delay-sensitive applications. In a vehicular network (VANET) environment, the dynamic nature of vehicles makes the current open research issues even more challenging due to the frequent topology changes that can lead to disconnections between vehicles. To this end, a number of research works have been proposed in the context of cloud and fog computing over the 5G infrastructure. On the other hand, there are a variety of research proposals that aim to extend the connection time between vehicles. Vehicular Social Networks (VSNs) have been defined to decrease the burden of connection time between the vehicles. This survey paper first provides the necessary background information and definitions about fog, cloud and related paradigms such as 5G and SDN. Then, it introduces the reader to Vehicular Social Networks, the different metrics and the main differences between VSNs and Online Social Networks. Finally, this survey investigates the related works in the context of VANETs that have demonstrated different architectures to address the different issues in fog computing. Moreover, it provides a categorization of the different approaches and discusses the required metrics in the context of fog and cloud and compares them to Vehicular social networks. A comparison of the relevant related works is discussed along with new research challenges and trends in the domain of VSNs and fog computing.

The experimental evidence of an anomalous behavior in the decay times of Tl$^+$-like impurity centers in alkali-halide crystals has generated a revival of interest with respect to these materials. We discuss here about the possibility that the $A_T$ emission of KCl:Tl can be considered as a double emission, namely as a superposition of the $A_T$ and $A_X$ emission bands. The plausibility of this hypothesis is discussed in the light of the available, old and recent, experimental features. A quantitative test of this assumption is performed in the framework of a model which demonstrates to be suitable for interpreting other similar cases.

The paper presents an explicit state-based modeling approach aimed at modeling Systems of Systems behavior. The approach allows to specify and verify incrementally safety and liveness rules without using model checking techniques. The state-based approach allows moreover to use the system behavior directly as an interface, greatly improving the effectiveness of the recursive composition needed when assembling Systems of Systems. The MEG (Mu to Electron Gamma) experiment has been running at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), Switzerland since 2008 to search for the decay \meg\ by using one of the most intense continuous $\mu^+$ beams in the world. This paper presents the MEG components: the positron spectrometer, including a thin target, a superconducting magnet, a set of drift chambers for measuring the muon decay vertex and the positron momentum, a timing counter for measuring the positron time, and a liquid xenon detector for measuring the photon energy, position and time. The trigger system, the read-out electronics and the data acquisition system are also presented in detail. The analysis of a combined data set, totaling 3.6 \times 10^14 stopped muons on target, in the search for the lepton flavour violating decay mu^+ -> e^+ gamma is presented. The data collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut show no excess of events compared to background expectations and yield a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of 5.7 \times 10^-13 (90% confidence level). We present a new result based on an analysis of the data collected by the MEG detector at the Paul Scherrer Institut in 2009 and 2010, in search of the lepton flavour violating decay mu->e gamma. The likelihood analysis of the combined data sample, which corresponds to a total of 1.8 x 10**14 muon decays, gives a 90% C.L. upper limit of 2.4 x 10**-12 on the branching ratio of the mu->e gamma decay, constituting the most stringent limit on the existence of this decay to date., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication at Phys. A search for the decay mu -> e gamma, performed at PSI and based on data from the initial three months of operation of the MEG experiment, yields an upper limit on the branching ratio of BR(mu -> e gamma) < 2.8 x 10**-11 (90% C.L.). An 800L liquid xenon scintillation $\gamma$ ray detector is being developed for the MEG experiment which will search for $\mu^+\to\mathrm{e}^+\gamma$ decay at the Paul Scherrer Institut. Absorption of scintillation light of xenon by impurities might possibly limit the performance of such a detector. We used a 100L prototype with an active volume of 372x372x496 mm$^3$ to study the scintillation light absorption. We have developed a method to evaluate the light absorption, separately from elastic scattering of light, by measuring cosmic rays and $\alpha$ sources. By using a suitable purification technique, an absorption length longer than 100 cm has been achieved. The optical properties of LXe in the vacuum ultra violet (VUV), determining the performance of a scintillation calorimeter, are discussed in detail. The available data, measured in a wider spectral region from visible to UV light, and in a large range of Xe densities, from gas to liquid, are examined. It is shown that this information can be used for deriving the LXe optical properties in the VUV. A comparison is made with the few direct measurements in LXe for VUV light resulting from the LXe excitation by ionizing particles. A useful relation is obtained which connects the Rayleigh scattering length to the refractive index in LXe., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures

This final article about the CHOOZ experiment presents a complete description of the electron antineutrino source and detector, the calibration methods and stability checks, the event reconstruction procedures and the Monte Carlo simulation. We present new results based on the entire CHOOZ data sample. We find (at 90% confidence level) no evidence for neutrino oscillations in the anti_nue disappearance mode, for the parameter region given by approximately Delta m**2 > 7 x 10**-4 eV^2 for maximum mixing, and sin**2(2 theta) = 0.10 for large Delta m**2. Lower sensitivity results, based only on the comparison of the positron spectra from the two different-distance nuclear reactors, are also presented; these are independent of the absolute normalization of the anti_nue flux, the cross section, the number of target protons and the detector efficiencies., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, Latex file

The CHOOZ experiment measured the antineutrino flux at a distance of about 1 Km from two nuclear reactors in order to detect possible neutrino oscillations with squared mass differences as low as 10**-3 eV**2 for full mixing. We show that the data analysis of the electron antineutrino events, collected by our liquid scintillation detector, locates the antineutrino source within a cone of half-aperture of about 18 degrees at the 68% C.L..
