In Radiation Physics classes, point sources are typically used, for which it is relatively easy to describe the signal obtained by a radiation detector, such as the NaI(Tl) scintillation detector. The use of large extended radiation sources is generally avoided due to the mathematical complexity that their description may involve. However, the use of Monte Carlo simulation methods allows this limitation to be overcome. Potassium chloride, containing the 40K isotope, is an ideal candidate for carrying out this type of experiment. The source activity is obtained through the detection of the 1460.8 keV gamma-photon emitted in the 40K decay. In the first experiment, a cylindrical container is used, placing the NaI(Tl) detector in its center and filling the remaining space with potassium chloride. In a second, more complex case, a large radioactive source consisting of a container filled with a mixture of sand and potassium chloride, with the NaI(Tl) detector placed in the center of the mixture, is used. In this case, the mass of potassium chloride is approximately 1/5 of the sand mass. In both experiments, the detection efficiency is obtained by Monte Carlo simulation. A careful analysis of the experimental data allows to obtain a good agreement between the measured and calculated value of the activity., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, 6 tables

Monte Carlo (MC) techniques are currently deemed the gold standard for internal dosimetry, since the simulations can perform full radiation transport and reach a precision level not attainable by analytical methods. In this study, a custom voxelized particle source was developed for the TOPAS-MC toolkit to be used for internal dosimetry purposes. The source was designed to allow the use of clinical functional scans data to simulate events that reproduce the patient-specific tracer biodistribution. Simulation results are very promising, showing that this can be a first step towards the extension of TOPAS-MC to nuclear medicine applications. The goal of this work is to present results of field output factors (OF) using an IBA CC003 (Razor NanoChamber) and compared these results with PTW 60019 (MicroDiamond) and IBA Razor Diode. The experimental results for IBA CC003 were also compared with Monte Carlo (MC) Simulation, using Penelope and Ulysses programs. In addition, field output correction factors for IBA CC003 were derived with three different methods: 1) using PTW 60019 and IBA Razor as reference detectors; 2) comparison between MC and experimental measurements; and 3) using only MC. The beam collimation included in this study were 1) square field size between 10x10 and 0.5x0.5 cm2 defined by the MLC and jaws and 2) cones of different diameters. For IBA CC003 it was determined the polarity and ion collection efficiency correction factors in parallel and perpendicular orientation. The results indicate 1) the variation of polarity effect with the field size is relevant for the determination of OF using IBA CC003, especially for parallel orientation; 2) there is no significant variation of the ion collection efficiency with the field size using IBA CC003 in parallel orientation; 3) OF differences between IBA CC003 and PTW 60019/IBA Razor and experimental and MC results increase with decreasing field size. Results on the field output correction factor indicate 1) using the first and second method, the factor increase with decreasing field size, which can be related with the influence of the volume effect and 2) using the third method the factor decrease with decreasing field size, which can be explained by the perturbation effect., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, 11 tables

The Di{\'o}si-Penrose model is explored in a relativistic context. Relativistic effects were considered within a recently proposed Grave de Peralta approach [L. Grave de Peralta, {\em Results Phys.} {\bf 18} (2020) 103318], which parametrize the Schr{\"o}dinger-like hamiltonian so as to impose that the average kinetic energy of the system coincide with its relativistic kinetic energy. As a case of study, the method is applied to a particle in a box with good results. In the Di{\'o}si-Penrose model we observed that the width of a quantum matter field confined by its own gravitational field [L. Di{\'o}si, {\em Phys. Lett}. {\bf 105A} (1984) 199], sharply drop to zero for a mass of the order of the Planck mass, indicating a breakdown of the model at the Planck scale.

A relativistic version of the Schr{\"o}dinger-Newton equation is analyzed within the recently proposed Grave de Peralta approach [L. Grave de Peralta, {\em Results Phys.} {\bf 18} (2020) 103318], which include relativistic effects by a parametrization of the non-relativistic hamiltonian, so as to impose that the average kinetic energy of the system coincide with its relativistic kinetic energy. The reliability of this method is tested for the particle in a box. By applying this method to the Schr{\"o}dinger-Newton equation we shows that the characteristic length of the model [L. Di{\'o}si, {\em Phys. Lett}. {\bf 105A} (1984) 199] goes to zero for a mass of the order of the Planck mass, suggesting a collapse of the wavefuncton, induced by gravity.

In this paper, we demonstrate novel relationships between quantum mechanics and the electromagnetic wave equation. In our approach, an invariant interference-dependent electromagnetic quantity, which we call "quantum rest mass", replaces the conventional role of the inertial rest mass. In the ensuing results, photons, during interference, move slower than the speed of light in vacuum, and possess de Broglie wavelength. Further, we use our electromagnetic approach to examine double-slit photon trajectories, and to arrive at the Schrodinger equation's results for a particle in an infinite square well potential., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The aim of this study is to measure the radon mass exhalation rate from common granite building materials used in the East and Northeast part of Portugal. Twelve cubic shaped samples were measured. Nine of them without any coating and three coated with different materials (varnish,hydrorepellent and liquid silicone). The radon measurements were performed with two different techniques: one using passive detectors and other using an active detector. For the passive method CR-39 solid state nuclear track detectors were used. The active method used the RAD7 DURRIDGE detector. Radon mass exhalation rates obtained from both methods present relatively low values in the 11 to 45 mBq/kg/h range for the analyzed samples. Concerning the coated samples, the measured values are on average four times lower than the ones without coating. The primary motivation for this work is the evaluation of the radon concentration in portable water for human consumption in Bibala, a municipality in Angola, where granitic rocks are common, and contain a high concentration of uranium that can be mobilized in underground water. Radon is the largest contributor of radioactive pollution in underground water.Its concentration in water, represents a public health risk due to the fact that the gas can easily escape into the air, adding to the total indoor concentration of radon.On the other hand, ingestion of water with a high radon concentration represents an additional risk to the stomach. Measurements of radon concentration, in Bibala municipality's water, were performed on 16 samples obtained from wells of various depths and analyzed with DURRIDGEs' RAD7 equipment. An active device for radon detection in the air was developed. The monitor operates in pulse counting mode for real-time continuous measurements. The presented prototype has a relatively simple design made of low-price and easy to acquire components which made it possible to develop an inexpensive device. The device used as a sensor, the SLCD-61N5 Si-PIN planar photodiode, which has an area of 9.67x9.67 mm2, is sensitive to alpha particles. An Arduino Uno microcontroller was used as a data acquisition system. Signals were observed when placing an 241Am or 226Ra source near the sensor. The sensor's sensitivity has small bias dependency and the device can operate even at modest voltage. Plastic scintillator detectors have been studied as dosimeters, since they provide a cost-effective alternative to conventional ionization chambers. On the other hand, several articles have reported undesired response dependencies on beam energy and temperature, which enhances the necessity to determine appropriate correction factors. In this work, we studied the light yield temperature dependency of four plastic scintillators (BCF-10, BCF-60, BC-404 and RP-200A) and two clear fibers (BCF-98 and SK-80). Measurements were made using a 50 kVp X-ray beam to produce the scintillation and/or radioluminescence signal. Worldwide several radiation sources contribute to the delivered dose to the human population. This radiation also acts as natural background when detecting radiation, for instance from radioactive sources. In this work a medium-size plastic scintillation detector is used to evaluate the dose delivered by natural radiation sources. Calibration of the detector involved the use of radioactive sources and Monte Carlo simulation of the energy deposition per disintegration. A measurement of the annual dose due to background radiation to the body was then estimated. A dose value compatible with the value reported by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation was obtained., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables

AlfaMC is a Monte Carlo simulation code for the transport of alpha particles. The code is based on the Continuous Slowing Down Approximation and uses the NIST/ASTAR stopping-power database. The code uses a powerful geometrical package allowing the coding of complex geometries. A flexible histogramming package is used which greatly easies the scoring of results. The code is tailored for microdosimetric applications where speed is a key factor. Comparison with the SRIM code is made for transmitted energy in thin layers and range for air, mylar, aluminum and gold. The general agreement between the two codes is good for beam energies between 1 and 12 MeV. The code is open-source and released under the General Public Licence., Comment: 39 pages, 14 figures

Purpose: For more than a decade that plastic optical fiber based dosimeters have been developed for medical applications. The feasibility of dosimeters using optical fibers that are almost Cherenkov light free has been demonstrated in some prototypes, particularly suitable for photon high-energy beams. In the energy range up to a few hundred keV, where the production of Cherenkov light by secondary electrons is negligible or small, the largest source of background are the fluorescence mechanisms. Methods: In recent years our group has developed an optical fiber dosimeter with photodiode readout named DosFib, which has small energy dependence in the range below 100 keV relevant for radiology. Photodiodes are robust photodetectors, presenting good stability over time and enough sensitivity to allow the use of an electrometer as a measuring device without extra electronics. Results: In-vitro tests using a High Dose Rate 192Ir source have demonstrated its suitability for brachytherapy applications using this important radioactive source. Attenuation curves have been obtained in water with the DosFib dosimeter and an ionization chamber and the depth dose profiles shown to be identical. Conclusions: This new dosimeter can thus be calibrated and used in clinical measurements with good competitive advantages over other dosimeters., Comment: Submitted to Medical Physics
