Mathematics - Algebraic Geometry - Abstract
In this paper, we completely classify the canonical threefolds on the Noether line with geometric genus $p_g \ge 11$ by studying their moduli spaces. For every such moduli space, we establish an explicit stratification, estimate the number of its irreducible components and prove the dimension formula. A new and unexpected phenomenon is that the number of irreducible components grows linearly with the geometric genus, while the moduli space of canonical surfaces on the Noether line with any prescribed geometric genus has at most two irreducible components. The key idea in the proof is to relate the canonical threefolds on the Noether line to the simple fibrations in $(1, 2)$-surfaces by proving a conjecture stated by two of the authors in [CP]., Comment: Comments are welcome

The temporal credit assignment problem is a central challenge in Reinforcement Learning (RL), concerned with attributing the appropriate influence to each actions in a trajectory for their ability to achieve a goal. However, when feedback is delayed and sparse, the learning signal is poor, and action evaluation becomes harder. Canonical solutions, such as reward shaping and options, require extensive domain knowledge and manual intervention, limiting their scalability and applicability. In this work, we lay the foundations for Credit Assignment with Language Models (CALM), a novel approach that leverages Large Language Models (LLMs) to automate credit assignment via reward shaping and options discovery. CALM uses LLMs to decompose a task into elementary subgoals and assess the achievement of these subgoals in state-action transitions. Every time an option terminates, a subgoal is achieved, and CALM provides an auxiliary reward. This additional reward signal can enhance the learning process when the task reward is sparse and delayed without the need for human-designed rewards. We provide a preliminary evaluation of CALM using a dataset of human-annotated demonstrations from MiniHack, suggesting that LLMs can be effective in assigning credit in zero-shot settings, without examples or LLM fine-tuning. Our preliminary results indicate that the knowledge of LLMs is a promising prior for credit assignment in RL, facilitating the transfer of human knowledge into value functions., Comment: 9 pages

As Deep Reinforcement Learning (Deep RL) research moves towards solving large-scale worlds, efficient environment simulations become crucial for rapid experimentation. However, most existing environments struggle to scale to high throughput, setting back meaningful progress. Interactions are typically computed on the CPU, limiting training speed and throughput, due to slower computation and communication overhead when distributing the task across multiple machines. Ultimately, Deep RL training is CPU-bound, and developing batched, fast, and scalable environments has become a frontier for progress. Among the most used Reinforcement Learning (RL) environments, MiniGrid is at the foundation of several studies on exploration, curriculum learning, representation learning, diversity, meta-learning, credit assignment, and language-conditioned RL, and still suffers from the limitations described above. In this work, we introduce NAVIX, a re-implementation of MiniGrid in JAX. NAVIX achieves over 200 000x speed improvements in batch mode, supporting up to 2048 agents in parallel on a single Nvidia A100 80 GB. This reduces experiment times from one week to 15 minutes, promoting faster design iterations and more scalable RL model development.

A re-calculation of a known family of formulas of PI is carried out, revisiting the old Archimedes' algorithm. This allows to identify a general family equation and three new simple formulas of Pi in terms of the golden ratio PHI in the form of infinite nested square roots, with some geometrical properties that enhance the link between the circle and the golden ratio. Applying the same criteria, a fourth formula is given, that brings to the known Dixon's squaring the circle approximation, thus an easier approach to this problem is suggested, by a rectangle with both sides proportional to the golden ratio PHI., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures - review process for publishing in JAMP Journal of Applied Mathematics and Physics

Temperature is a major source of inaccuracy in high-sensitivity accelerometers and gravimeters. Active thermal control systems require power and may not be ideal in some contexts such as airborne or spaceborne applications. We propose a solution that relies on multiple thermometers placed within the accelerometer to measure temperature and thermal gradient variations. Machine Learning algorithms are used to relate the temperatures to their effect on the accelerometer readings. However, obtaining labeled data for training these algorithms can be difficult. Therefore, we also developed a training platform capable of replicating temperature variations in a laboratory setting. Our experiments revealed that thermal gradients had a significant effect on accelerometer readings, emphasizing the importance of multiple thermometers. The proposed method was experimentally tested and revealed a great potential to be extended to other sources of inaccuracy, such as rotations, as well as to other types of measuring systems, such as magnetometers or gyroscopes.

The Credit Assignment Problem (CAP) refers to the longstanding challenge of Reinforcement Learning (RL) agents to associate actions with their long-term consequences. Solving the CAP is a crucial step towards the successful deployment of RL in the real world since most decision problems provide feedback that is noisy, delayed, and with little or no information about the causes. These conditions make it hard to distinguish serendipitous outcomes from those caused by informed decision-making. However, the mathematical nature of credit and the CAP remains poorly understood and defined. In this survey, we review the state of the art of Temporal Credit Assignment (CA) in deep RL. We propose a unifying formalism for credit that enables equitable comparisons of state-of-the-art algorithms and improves our understanding of the trade-offs between the various methods. We cast the CAP as the problem of learning the influence of an action over an outcome from a finite amount of experience. We discuss the challenges posed by delayed effects, transpositions, and a lack of action influence, and analyse how existing methods aim to address them. Finally, we survey the protocols to evaluate a credit assignment method and suggest ways to diagnose the sources of struggle for different methods. Overall, this survey provides an overview of the field for new-entry practitioners and researchers, it offers a coherent perspective for scholars looking to expedite the starting stages of a new study on the CAP, and it suggests potential directions for future research., Comment: 56 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables

In this work we classify all smooth surfaces with geometric genus equal to three and an action of a group G isomorphic to (Z/2)^k such that the quotient is a plane. We find 11 families. We compute the canonical map of all of them, finding in particular a family of surfaces with canonical map of degree 16 that we could not find in the literature. We discuss the quotients by all subgroups of G finding several K3 surfaces with symplectic involutions. In particular we show that six families are families of triple K3 burgers in the sense of Laterveer., Comment: 30 pages. v2: added a comment on the dependence of the three involutions that determine the structure of triple K3 burgers. Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is characterized by disorganised electrical activity in the atria and is known to be sustained by the presence of regions of fibrosis (scars) or functional cellular remodeling, both of which may lead to areas of slow conduction. Estimating the effective conductivity of the myocardium and identifying regions of abnormal propagation is therefore crucial for the effective treatment of AF. We hypothesise that the spatial distribution of tissue conductivity can be directly inferred from an array of concurrently acquired contact electrograms (EGMs). We generate a dataset of simulated cardiac AP propagation using randomised scar distributions and a phenomenological cardiac model and calculate contact EGMs at various positions on the field. EGMs are enriched with noise extracted from biological data acquired in the lab. A deep neural network, based on a modified U-net architecture, is trained to estimate the location of the scar and quantify conductivity of the tissue with a Jaccard index of 91%. We adapt a wavelet-based surrogate testing analysis to confirm that the inferred conductivity distribution is an accurate representation of the ground truth input to the model. We find that the root mean square error (RMSE) between the ground truth and our predictions is significantly smaller ($p_{val}<0.01$) than the RMSE between the ground truth and surrogate samples., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures

There he constructed and described a $3$-fold of the type $X^{22}_3$ in ${\mathbb P}^{13}$ with canonical curve section, which we like to call Fano's last Fano. We report on Fano's construction, providing various (in our opinion missing) proofs, in modern language and trying to use results and techniques available at that time. We introduce the notion of a simple fibration in $(1,2)$-surfaces. That is, a hypersurface inside a certain weighted projective space bundle over a curve such that the general fibre is a minimal surface of general type with $p_g=2$ and $K^2=1$. We prove that almost all Gorenstein simple fibrations over the projective line with at worst canonical singularities are canonical threefolds "on the Noether line" with $K^3=\frac43 p_g-\frac{10}3$, and we classify them. Among them, we find all the canonical threefolds on the Noether line that have previously appeared in the literature. The Gorenstein simple fibrations over $\mathbb{P}^1$ are Cartier divisors in a toric $4$-fold. This allows to us to show among other things, that the previously known canonical threefolds on the Noether line form an open subset of the moduli space of canonical threefolds, that the general element of this component is a Mori Dream Space, and that there is a second component when the geometric genus is congruent to $6$ modulo $8$; the threefolds in this component are new., Comment: 38 pages. Poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene, P(VDF-TrFE)) and P(VDF-TrFE)/barium titanate nanoparticle (BTNP) films are prepared and tested as substrates for neuronal stimulation through direct piezoelectric effect. Films are characterized in terms of surface, mechanical, and piezoelectric features before in vitro testing on SH-SY5Y cells. In particular, BTNPs significantly improve piezoelectric properties of the films (4.5-fold increased d31). Both kinds of films support good SH-SY5Y viability and differentiation. Ultrasound (US) stimulation is proven to elicit Ca2+ transients and to enhance differentiation in cells grown on the piezoelectric substrates. For the first time in the literature, this study demonstrates the suitability of polymer/ceramic composite films and US for neuronal stimulation through direct piezoelectric effect.

Mathematics - Algebraic Geometry - Abstract
The Coleman-Oort conjecture says that for large $g$ there are no positive-dimensional Shimura subvarieties of $\mathsf{A}_g$ generically contained in the Jacobian locus. Counterexamples are known for $g\leq 7$. They can all be constructed using families of Galois coverings of curves satisfying a numerical condition. These families are already classified in cases where: a) the Galois group is cyclic, b) it is abelian and the family is 1-dimensional, and c) $g\leq 9$. By means of carefully designed computations and theoretical arguments excluding a large number of cases we are able to prove that for $g\leq 100$ there are no other families than those already known., Comment: Accepted for publication on Revista de la Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, F\'isicas y Naturales. We investigate the performance of fully convolutional networks to simulate the motion and interaction of surface waves in open and closed complex geometries. We focus on a U-Net architecture and analyse how well it generalises to geometric configurations not seen during training. We demonstrate that a modified U-Net architecture is capable of accurately predicting the height distribution of waves on a liquid surface within curved and multi-faceted open and closed geometries, when only simple box and right-angled corner geometries were seen during training. We also consider a separate and independent 3D CNN for performing time-interpolation on the predictions produced by our U-Net. This allows generating simulations with a smaller time-step size than the one the U-Net has been trained for.

Dynamical systems can be modelled by partial differential equations and numerical computations are used everywhere in science and engineering. In this work, we investigate the performance of recurrent and convolutional deep neural network architectures to predict the surface waves. The system is governed by the Saint-Venant equations. We improve on the long-term prediction over previous methods while keeping the inference time at a fraction of numerical simulations. We also show that convolutional networks perform at least as well as recurrent networks in this task. Finally, we assess the generalisation capability of each network by extrapolating in longer time-frames and in different physical settings.

Conformable Electronics refers to a class of electronic devices that have the ability to conformally adhere onto non-planar surfaces and materials, resulting particularly appealing for skin applications, such as the case of skin-worn unobtrusive (bio)sensors for healthcare monitoring. Conformability can be addressed by integrating basic electronic components on ultrathin polymeric film substrates. Among other basic electronic components, capacitors are fundamental ones for energy storage, sensing, frequency tuning, impedance adaptation and signal processing. In this work we present a novel approach for conformable capacitors based on a free-standing, ultrathin and ultra-conformable nanosheets of poly (vinyl formal) (PVF), which serve both as structural and dielectric component of the capacitor. A novel fabrication approach is proposed and applied to fully free-standing ultrathin capacitors fabrication, having an overall thickness as low as 200 nm; that represents, to the best of our knowledge, the thinnest free-standing capacitors ever reported. Thanks to the ultra-low thickness, the proposed capacitors are able to sustain flexure to extremely small curvature radii (as low as 1.5 {\mu}m) and to conform to complex surfaces, such as a nylon mesh with micrometric texture without compromising their operation.

Mathematics - Algebraic Geometry - Abstract
We study mixed surfaces, the minimal resolution S of the singularities of a quotient (C x C)/G of the "square" of a curve by a finite group G of automorphisms that contains elements not preserving the factors. We study them through the "further quotients" by (C x C)/G' where G' contains G. As a first application we prove that if the irregularity is at least 3, then S is also minimal. The result is sharp. The main result is a complete description of the Albanese morphism of S through a determined further quotient (C x C)/G' that is an \'etale cover of the symmetric square of a curve. In particular, if the irregularity of S is at least 2, then S has maximal Albanese dimension. We apply our result to all the "semi-isogenous" mixed surfaces of maximal Albanese dimension constructed by Cancian and Frapporti, relating them with the other constructions appearing in the literature of surfaces of general type having the same invariants., Comment: 18 pages, final version to appear on Rev. Mathematics - Dynamical Systems - Abstract
Many natural systems are organized as networks, in which the nodes interact in a time-dependent fashion. The object of our study is to relate connectivity to the temporal behavior of a network in which the nodes are (real or complex) logistic maps, coupled according to a connectivity scheme that obeys certain constrains, but also incorporates random aspects. We investigate in particular the relationship between the system architecture and possible dynamics. In the current paper we focus on establishing the framework, terminology and pertinent questions for low-dimensional networks. A subsequent paper will further address the relationship between hardwiring and dynamics in high-dimensional networks. For networks of both complex and real node-maps, we define extensions of the Julia and Mandelbrot sets traditionally defined in the context of single map iterations. For three different model networks, we use a combination of analytical and numerical tools to illustrate how the system behavior (measured via topological properties of the Julia sets) changes when perturbing the underlying adjacency graph. We differentiate between the effects on dynamics of different perturbations that directly modulate network connectivity: increasing/decreasing edge weights, and altering edge configuration by adding, deleting or moving edges. We discuss the implications of considering a rigorous extension of Fatou-Julia theory known to apply for iterations of single maps, to iterations of ensembles of maps coupled as nodes in a network., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures

Mathematics - Algebraic Geometry ,14J29 - Abstract
By a theorem of Reider, a twisted bicanonical system, that means a linear system of divisors numerically equivalent to a bicanonical divisor, on a minimal surface of general type, is base point free if $K^2_S \geq 5$. Twisted bicanonical systems with base points are known in literature only for $K^2=1,2$. We prove in this paper that all surfaces in a family of surfaces with $K^2=3$ constructed in a previous paper with G. Bini and J. Neves have a twisted bicanonical system (different from the bicanonical system) with two base points. We show that the map induced by the above twisted bicanonical system is birational, and describe in detail the closure of its image and its singular locus. Inspired by this description, we reduced the problem of constructing a minimal surface of general type with $K^2=3$ whose bicanonical system has base points, under some reasonable assumptions, to the problem of constructing a curve in $\mathbb{P}^3$ with certain properties., Comment: 20 pages. Concrete, a mixture formed by mixing cement, water, and fine and coarse mineral aggregates is used in the construction of nuclear power plants (NPPs), e.g., to construct the reactor cavity concrete that encases the reactor pressure vessel, etc. In such environments, concrete may be exposed to radiation (e.g., neutrons) emanating from the reactor core. Until recently, concrete has been assumed relatively immune to radiation exposure. Direct evidence acquired on Ar$^+$-ion irradiated calcite and quartz indicates, on the contrary, that, such minerals, which constitute aggregates in concrete, may be significantly altered by irradiation. Specifically, while quartz undergoes disordering of its atomic structure resulting in a near complete lack of periodicity, i.e., similar to glassy silica, calcite only experiences random rotations, and distortions of its carbonate groups. As a result, irradiated quartz shows a reduction in density of around 15%, and an increase in chemical reactivity, described by its dissolution rate, similar to a glassy silica; i.e., an increase of around 3 orders of magnitude. Calcite however, shows little change in dissolution rates - although its density noted to reduce by around 9%. These differences are correlated with the nature of bonds in these minerals, i.e., being dominantly ionic or covalent, and the rigidity of the mineral's atomic network that is characterized by the number of topological constraints (n$_c$) that are imposed on the atoms in the network. The outcomes are discussed within the context of the durability of concrete structural elements formed with calcitic/quartzitic aggregates in nuclear power plants.

Like many others, silicate solids dissolve when placed in contact with water. In a given aqueous environment, the dissolution rate depends highly on the composition and the structure of the solid, and can span several orders of magnitude. Although the kinetics of dissolution depends on the complexities of both the dissolving solid and the solvent, a clear understanding of which critical structural descriptors of the solid control its dissolution rate is lacking. Through pioneering dissolution experiments and atomistic simulations, we correlate the dissolution rates - ranging over four orders of magnitude - of a selection of silicate glasses and crystals, to the number of chemical topological constraints acting between the atoms of the dissolving solid. The number of such constraints serves as an indicator of the effective activation energy, which arises from steric effects, and prevents the network from reorganizing locally to accommodate intermediate units forming over the course of the dissolution.

Long-term creep (i.e., deformation under sustained load) is a significant material response that needs to be accounted for in concrete structural design. However, the nature and origin of creep remains poorly understood, and controversial. Here, we propose that concrete creep at RH (relative humidity) > 50%, but fixed moisture-contents (i.e., basic creep), arises from a dissolution-precipitation mechanism, active at nanoscale grain contacts, as is often observed in a geological context, e.g., when rocks are exposed to sustained loads, in moist environments. Based on micro-indentation and vertical scanning interferometry experiments, and molecular dynamics simulations carried out on calcium-silicate-hydrates (C-S-H's), the major binding phase in concrete, of different compositions, we show that creep rates are well correlated to dissolution rates - an observation which supports the dissolution-precipitation mechanism as the origin of concrete creep. C-S-H compositions featuring high resistance to dissolution, and hence creep are identified - analysis of which, using topological constraint theory, indicates that these compositions present limited relaxation modes on account of their optimally connected (i.e., constrained) atomic networks.

Although quartz ($\rm \alpha$-form) is a mineral used in numerous applications wherein radiation exposure is an issue, the nature of the atomistic defects formed during radiation-induced damage have not been fully clarified. Especially, the extent of oxygen vacancy formation is still debated, which is an issue of primary importance as optical techniques based on charged oxygen vacancies have been utilized to assess the level of radiation damage in quartz. In this paper, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are applied to study the effects of ballistic impacts on the atomic network of quartz. We show that the defects that are formed mainly consist of over-coordinated Si and O, as well as Si--O connectivity defects, e.g., small Si--O rings and edge-sharing Si tetrahedra. Oxygen vacancies, on the contrary, are found in relatively low abundance, suggesting that characterizations based on $E^{\prime}$ centers do not adequately capture radiation-induced structural damage in quartz. Finally, we evaluate the dependence on the incident energy, of the amount of each type of the point defects formed, and quantify unambiguously the threshold displacement energies for both O and Si atoms. These results provide a comprehensive basis to assess the nature and extent of radiation damage in quartz.

Mathematics - Dynamical Systems - Abstract
The behavior of orbits for iterated logistic maps has been widely studied since the dawn of discrete dynamics as a research field, in particular in the context of the complex quadratic family. However, little is is known about orbit behavior if the map changes along with the iterations. We investigate in which ways the traditional theory of Fatou-Julia may still apply in this case, illustrating how the iteration pattern (symbolic template) can affect the topology of the Julia and Mandelbrot sets. We briefly discuss the potential of this extension towards a variety of applications in genetic and neural coding, since it investigates how an occasional or a reoccurring error in a replication or learning algorithm may affect the dynamic outcome., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 2 appendices

In this article we suggest a new approach to the systematic, computer-aided construction and to the classification of product-quotient surfaces, introducing a new invariant, the integer gamma, which depends only on the singularities of the quotient model X=(C_1 x C_2)/G. It turns out that gamma is related to the codimension of the subspace of H^{1,1} generated by algebraic curves coming from the construction (i.e., the classes of the two fibers and the Hirzebruch-Jung strings arising from the minimal resolution of singularities of X). Profiting from this new insight we developped and implemented an algorithm which constructs all regular product-quotient surfaces with given values of gamma and geometric genus in the computer algebra program MAGMA. Being far better than the previous algorithms, we are able to construct a substantial number of new regular product-quotient surfaces of geometric genus zero. We prove that only two of these are of general type, raising the number of known families of product-quotient surfaces of general type with genus zero to 75. This gives evidence to the conjecture that there is an effective bound of the form gamma < Gamma(p_g,q)., Comment: 33 pages, 3 figures

A mixed quasi-\'etale quotient is the quotient of the product of a curve of genus at least 2 with itself by the action of a group which exchanges the two factors and acts freely out of a finite subset. A mixed quasi-\'etale surface is the minimal resolution of its singularities. We produce an algorithm computing all mixed quasi-\'etale surfaces with given geometric genus, irregularity, and self-intersection of the canonical class. We prove that all irregular mixed quasi-\'etale surfaces of general type are minimal. As application, we classify all irregular mixed quasi \'etale surfaces of general type with genus equal to the irregularity, and all the regular ones with K^2>0, thus constructing new examples of surfaces of general type with \chi=1. We mention the first example of a minimal surface of general type with p_g=q=1 and Albanese fibre of genus bigger than K^2., Comment: 27 pages; v2: minor corrections, to be published in Glasgow Mathematical Journal

We classify the subgroups of the automorphism group of the product of 4 projective lines admitting an invariant anticanonical smooth divisor on which the action is free. As a first application, we describe new examples of Calabi-Yau 3-folds with small Hodge numbers. In particular, the Picard number is 1 and the number of moduli is 5. Furthermore, the fundamental group is non-trivial. We also construct a new family of minimal surfaces of general type with geometric genus zero, K^2=3 and fundamental group of order 16. We show that this family dominates an irreducible component of dimension 4 of the moduli space of the surfaces of general type., Comment: 18 pages; v2: simplified some arguments in the last section, final version to appear on Communications in Contemporary Mathematics

We settle the first step for the classification of surfaces of general type with K^2 = 8, p_g = 4 and q = 0, classifying the even surfaces (K is 2-divisible). The first even surfaces of general type with $K^2=8$, $p_g=4$ and $q=0$ were found by Oliverio as complete intersections of bidegree (6,6) in a weighted projective space P(1,1,2,3,3). In this article we prove that the moduli space of even surfaces of general type with K^2 = 8, p_g = 4 and q = 0 consists of two 35 -dimensional irreducible components intersecting in a codimension one subset (the first of these components is the closure of the open set considered by Oliverio). For the surfaces in the second component the canonical models are always singular, hence we get a new example of generically nonreduced moduli spaces. Our result gives a posteriori a complete description of the half-canonical rings of the above even surfaces. The method of proof is, we believe, the most interesting part of the paper. After describing the graded ring of a cone we are able, combining the explicit description of some subsets of the moduli space, some deformation theoretic arguments, and finally some local algebra arguments, to describe the whole moduli space. This is the first time that the classification of a class of surfaces can only be done using moduli theory: up to now first the surfaces were classified, on the basis of some numerical inequalities, or other arguments, and later on the moduli spaces were investigated., Comment: 29 pages, the method of proof has been more carefully explained

In this paper we construct, for every n, smooth varieties of general type of dimension n with the first $\lfloor \frac{n-2}{3} \rfloor$ plurigenera equal to zero. Hacon-McKernan, Takayama and Tsuji have recently shown that there are numbers $r_n$ such that, for all r > $r_n$, the r-canonical map of every variety of general type of dimension n is birational. Our examples show that $r_n$ grows at least quadratically as a function of n. Moreover they show that the minimal volume of a variety of general type of dimension n is smaller than $\frac{3^{n+1}}{(n-1)^{n}}$. In addition we prove that for every positive rational number q there are smooth varieties of general type with volume q and dimension arbitrarily big., Comment: 7 pages; v2: minor corrections, final version to be published in Communications in Algebra

We construct a 4-dimensional family of surfaces of general type with p_g=0 and K^2=3 and fundamental group Z/2xQ_8, where Q_8 is the quaternion group. The family constructed contains the Burniat surfaces with K^2=3. Additionally, we construct the universal coverings of the surfaces in our family as complete intersections on (\PP^1)^4 and we also give an action of Z/2xQ_8 on (\PP^1)^4 lifting the natural action on the surfaces. The strategy is the following. We consider an \'etale (Z/2)^3-cover T of a surface with p_g=0 and K^2=3 and assume that it may be embedded in a Fano 3-fold V. We construct V by using the theory of parallel unprojection. Since V is an Enriques--Fano 3-fold, considering its Fano cover yields the simple description of the universal covers above., Comment: 29 pages, 3 figures. Final version. To appear in Ann. A product-quotient surface is the minimal resolution of the singularities of the quotient of a product of two curves by the action of a finite group acting separately on the two factors. We classify all minimal product-quotient surfaces of general type with geometric genus 0: they form 72 families. We show that there is exactly one product-quotient surface of general type with big canonical class which is not minimal, and describe its (-1) curves. We classify the minimal surfaces of general type with $K^2 \leq 4\chi-8$ whose canonical map is composed with a pencil, up to a finite number of families. More precisely we prove that there is exactly one irreducible family for each value of $\chi \gg 0$, $4\chi-10 \leq K^2 \leq 4\chi-8$. All these surfaces are complete intersections in a toric $4-$fold and bidouble covers of Hirzebruch surfaces. (Abridged) Context. This is the second paper of a series devoted to the WIde Field Nearby Galaxy-cluster Survey (WINGS). WINGS is a long term project which is gathering wide-field, multi-band imaging and spectroscopy of galaxies in a complete sample of 77 X-ray selected, nearby clusters (0.04
=20deg). The main goal of this project is to establish a local reference for evolutionary studies of galaxies and galaxy clusters. Aims. This paper presents the optical (B,V) photometric catalogs of the WINGS sample and describes the procedures followed to construct them. Methods. We have constructed photometric catalogs based on wide-field images in B and V bands using SExtractor. Photometry has been performed on images in which large galaxies and halos of bright stars were removed after modeling them with elliptical isophotes. Results. We publish deep optical photometric catalogs (90% complete at V~21.7, which translates to ~M*(V)+6 at mean redshift), giving positions, geometrical parameters, and several total and aperture magnitudes for all the objects detected. For each field we have produced three catalogs containing galaxies, stars and objects of "unknown" classification (~16%)., Comment: Typo corrected in the initial of one of the authors (A. Cava). The first main purpose of this paper is to contribute to the existing knowledge about the complex projective surfaces $S$ of general type with $p_g(S) = 0$ and their moduli spaces, constructing 19 new families of such surfaces with hitherto unknown fundamental groups. We also provide a table containing all the known such surfaces with K^2 <=7. Our second main purpose is to describe in greater generality the fundamental groups of smooth projective varieties which occur as the minimal resolutions of the quotient of a product of curves by the action of a finite group. We classify, in the two dimensional case, all the surfaces with q=p_g = 0 obtained as the minimal resolution of such a quotient, having rational double points as singularities. We show that all these surfaces give evidence to the Bloch conjecture., Comment: v2: substantially improved and expanded version (56 pages instead of the former 37, new results and state of the art for surfaces with p_g =0). v3: title change

D. Jaffe and D. Ruberman proved in 1997 that a sextic hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^3$ has at most 65 nodes (the bound is sharp by Barth's construction). Almost at the same time, J. Wahl proposed a much shorter proof of the same result, by proving that a linear code $V\subset \F^{66}$ with weights in $\{24,32,40\}$ has dimension $\dim(V)\leq12$. He claimed that Jaffe-Ruberman's theorem follows as a corollary since the code associated to a sextic with n nodes has dimension at least $n-53$ and an incorrect result stated by Casnati and Catanese asserted that the possible cardinalities of an even set of nodes on a sextic were only 24, 32 and 40. Recently Catanese and Tonoli showed that the possible cardinalities of an even set of nodes on a sextic are exactly 24, 32, 40, 56. According to the above cardinalities, the theorem of Jaffe and Ruberman reduces to the following: Let $V\subset \F^{66}$ be a code with weights in $\{24,32,40,56\}$. Then $\dim(V)\leq12$. In this short note we give an elementary proof of this theorem using and integrating Wahl's ideas., Comment: 5 pages

In this paper we classify completely all regular minimal surfaces with K^2=8, p_g=4 whose canonical map is composed with an involution. We obtain six unirational families of respective dimensions 28,28,32,33,38,34. The last two are irreducible components of the moduli space of minimal surfaces with K^2=8, p_g=4. These families hit three different topological types., Comment: 23 pages. In this version we correct an error (which does not change the main theorem) and simplify substantially some proofs.
