Canada's research productivity in Library and Information Science (LIS) is significant: studies have found that Canada ranks third globally in terms of output. As the LIS field continues to grow, the pace of output accelerates, and the scope of this work expands. The recently launched Canadian Publications in Library and Information Science Database compiles all Canadian scientific publications, including those authored by faculty members and academic librarians. This database offers the advantage of encompassing articles and librarian publications that may not be typically included in traditional bibliometric surveys, such as those conducted using databases like Web of Science, Scopus, and Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA). Using this data, this study maps the scholarly contributions of Canadian LIS scholars and academic librarians to the field of LIS and examines whether Canadian LIS research is characterized by silos. This paper examines the similarities and differences in research output, impact, topics, and publication venues between academic librarians and scholars in Canada, as well as the extent to which academics and practitioners engage in research collaborations or reference each other's work. We find that while there is some degree of overlap in research topics and publication venues between LIS academics and academic librarians, the two groups appear to act as distinct research communities with distinct topical foci and publishing habits. The two groups also do not appear to engage with each other strongly, either through collaboration or citing each other's work.

The aim of the Canadian publications in Library and Information Science (LIS) database is to help break down the silos in which the two main target audiences - LIS faculty members and academic librarians - conduct their research. As part of a larger project entitled "Breaking down research silos", we created a database of research contributions by Canadian LIS researchers (academics and practitioners). This was motivated by a desire to make research by Canadian LIS scholars and practitioners more visible and foster collaboration between these two groups. The aim of this paper is to introduce the database, describe the process through which it was created, provide descriptive statistics of the database content, and highlight areas for future development.

Clarivate's Web of Science (WoS) and Elsevier's Scopus have been for decades the main sources of bibliometric information. Although highly curated, these closed, proprietary databases are largely biased towards English-language publications, underestimating the use of other languages in research dissemination. Launched in 2022, OpenAlex promised comprehensive, inclusive, and open-source research information. While already in use by scholars and research institutions, the quality of its metadata is currently being assessed. This paper contributes to this literature by assessing the completeness and accuracy of OpenAlex's metadata related to language, through a comparison with WoS, as well as an in-depth manual validation of a sample of 6,836 articles. Results show that OpenAlex exhibits a far more balanced linguistic coverage than WoS. However, language metadata is not always accurate, which leads OpenAlex to overestimate the place of English while underestimating that of other languages. If used critically, OpenAlex can provide comprehensive and representative analyses of languages used for scholarly publishing. Quantum computers hold the promise of solving certain problems that lie beyond the reach of conventional computers. Establishing this capability, especially for impactful and meaningful problems, remains a central challenge. One such problem is the simulation of nonequilibrium dynamics of a magnetic spin system quenched through a quantum phase transition. State-of-the-art classical simulations demand resources that grow exponentially with system size. Here we show that superconducting quantum annealing processors can rapidly generate samples in close agreement with solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation. We demonstrate area-law scaling of entanglement in the model quench in two-, three- and infinite-dimensional spin glasses, supporting the observed stretched-exponential scaling of effort for classical approaches. We assess approximate methods based on tensor networks and neural networks and conclude that no known approach can achieve the same accuracy as the quantum annealer within a reasonable timeframe. Thus quantum annealers can answer questions of practical importance that classical computers cannot.

Coating detector materials with films highly reflective in the ultraviolet region improves sensitivity of the rare-event detectors that use liquid xenon. In this work, we investigate the MgF$_2$-Al-MgF$_2$ coating designed to achieve high reflectance at 175 nm, the mean wavelength of liquid xenon (LXe) scintillation. The coating was applied to an unpolished, passivated copper substrate mimicking a realistic detector component of the proposed nEXO experiment, as well as to two unpassivated substrates with "high" and "average" levels of polishing. After confirming the composition and morphology of the thin-film coating using TEM and EDS, the samples underwent reflectance measurements in LXe and gaseous nitrogen (GN2). Measurements in LXe exposed the coated samples to -100 $\deg$C for several hours. No peeling of the coatings was observed after several thermal cycles. Polishing is found to strongly correlate with the measured specular reflectance ($R_{\mathrm{spec}}$). In particular, 5.8(5)% specular spike reflectance in LXe was measured for the realistic sample at 20$\deg$ of incidence, while the values for similar angles of incidence on the high and average polish samples are 62.3(1.3)% and 27.4(7)%, respectively. At large angles (66\deg--75$\deg$), the $R_{\mathrm{spec}}$ in LXe for the three samples increases to 23(5)%, 80(8)%, and 84(18)%, respectively. The $R_{\mathrm{spec}}$ at around 45$\deg$ was measured in both GN2 and LXe for average polish sample and shows a reasonable agreement. Importantly, the total reflectance of the samples is comparable and estimated to be 92(8)%, 85(8)%, and 83(8)% in GN2 for the realistic, average, and high polish samples, respectively. This is considered satisfactory for the next-generation LXe experiments that could benefit from using reflective films, such as nEXO and DARWIN, thus validating the design of the coating., Comment: As accepted to JINST

We demonstrate the storage and retrieval of heralded single photons in a fiber-based cavity quantum memory. The photons are stored, and retrieved, from the memory using quantum frequency conversion which switches the photon into, and out of, resonance with the cavity. The photons, generated in the telecom O-band with a bandwidth of 81\,GHz, are retrieved from the memory with a $1/e$ lifetime of 1.64$\mu$s, or 32.8 cavity round trips. We show that non-classical photon statistics remain for 70 round trips. The internal memory efficiency after 0.5$\mu$s of storage is $10.9 \pm 0.5$%; a coupling efficiency of 60% into the memory cavity yields a total efficiency of $6.0\pm0.3$%. These results mark a crucial step forward in the development of fiber-based quantum memories, and high-bandwidth memories operating at telecom wavelengths, with applications to photon source multiplexing and fiber-based quantum networking., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate the generation of photons within a fiber-cavity quantum memory, followed by later on-demand readout. Signal photons are generated by spontaneous four-wave mixing in a fiber cavity comprising a birefringent fiber with dichroic reflective end facets. The detection of the partner herald photon indicates the creation of the stored signal photon. After a delay, the signal photon is switched out of resonance with the fiber cavity by intracavity frequency translation using Bragg scattering four-wave mixing, driven by ancillary control pulses. We measure sub-Poissonian statistics in the output signal mode, with $g^{(2)}_{AC}=0.54(1)$ in the first readout bin and a readout frequency translation efficiency of $\approx$80%. The 1/e memory lifetime is $\approx$67 cavity cycles, or 1.68$\mu$s. In an alternate fiber cavity, we show a strategy for noise reduction and measure $g^{(2)}_{AC}=0.068(10)$ after one cavity cycle., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Stable sources of entangled photons are important requirements for quantum communications. In recent years, cascaded downconversion has been demonstrated as an effective method of directly producing three-photon entanglement. However, to produce polarization entanglement these sources have until now relied on intricate active phase stabilization schemes, thus limiting their robustness and usability. In this work, we present a completely phase-stable source of three-photon entanglement in the polarization degree of freedom. With this source, which is based on a cascade of two pair sources based on Sagnac configurations, we produce states with over 96\% fidelity with an ideal GHZ state. Moreover, we demonstrate the stability of the source over several days without any ongoing optimization. We expect this source to be a useful tool for applications requiring multiphoton entanglement, such as quantum secret sharing and producing heralded entangled photon pairs., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Work-related upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders (WRUED) are a major problem in modern societies as they affect the quality of life of workers and lead to absenteeism and productivity loss. According to studies performed in North America and Western Europe, their prevalence has increased in the last few decades. This challenge calls for improvements in prevention methods. One avenue is through the development of wearable sensor systems to analyze worker's movements and provide feedback to workers and/or clinicians. Such systems could decrease the physical work demands and ultimately prevent musculoskeletal disorders. This paper presents the development and validation of a data fusion algorithm for inertial measurement units to analyze worker's arm elevation. The algorithm was implemented on two commercial sensor systems (Actigraph GT9X and LSM9DS1) and results were compared with the data fusion results from a validated commercial sensor (XSens MVN system). Cross-correlation analyses [r], root-mean-square error (RMSE) and average absolute error of estimate were used to establish the construct validity of the algorithm. Five subjects each performed ten different arm elevation tasks. The results show that the algorithm is valid to evaluate shoulder movements with high correlations between the results of the two different sensors and the commercial sensor (0.900-0.998) and relatively low RMSE value for the ten tasks (1.66-11.24{\deg}). The proposed data fusion algorithm could thus be used to estimate arm elevation.

Automatically analyzing dialogue can help understand and guide behavior in domains such as counseling, where interactions are largely mediated by conversation. In this paper, we study modeling behavioral codes used to asses a psychotherapy treatment style called Motivational Interviewing (MI), which is effective for addressing substance abuse and related problems. Specifically, we address the problem of providing real-time guidance to therapists with a dialogue observer that (1) categorizes therapist and client MI behavioral codes and, (2) forecasts codes for upcoming utterances to help guide the conversation and potentially alert the therapist. For both tasks, we define neural network models that build upon recent successes in dialogue modeling. Our experiments demonstrate that our models can outperform several baselines for both tasks. Heralded single photon sources are often implemented using spontaneous parametric downconversion, but their quality can be restricted by optical loss, double pair emission and detector dark counts. Here, we show that the performance of such sources can be improved using cascaded downconversion, by providing a second trigger signal to herald the presence of a single photon, thereby reducing the effects of detector dark counts. We find that for a setup with fixed detectors, an improved heralded second-order correlation function $g^{(2)}$ can always be achieved with cascaded downconversion given sufficient efficiency for the second downconversion, even for equal single-photon production rates. Furthermore, the minimal $g^{(2)}$ value is unchanged for a large range in pump beam intensity. We report on the site-selected growth of bright single InAsP quantum dots embedded within InP photonic nanowire waveguides emitting at telecom wavelengths. We demonstrate a dramatic dependence of the emission rate on both the emission wavelength and the nanowire diameter. With an appropriately designed waveguide, tailored to the emission wavelength of the dot, an increase in count rate by nearly two orders of magnitude (0.4kcps to 35kcps) is obtained for quantum dots emitting in the telecom O-band. Using emission-wavelength-optimised waveguides, we demonstrate bright, narrow linewidth emission from single InAsP quantum dots with an unprecedented tuning range from 880nm to 1550nm. These results pave the way towards efficient single photon sources at telecom wavelengths using deterministically grown InAsP/InP nanowire quantum dots.

The new spectropolarimetric observations of HD 22920 with ESPaDOnS at CFHT reveal a strong variability of its spectral line profiles with the phase of stellar rotation. We have obtained Teff = 13640 K, logg=3.72 for this star from the best fit of its nine Balmer line profiles. The respective model of stellar atmosphere was calculated to perform abundance analysis of HD 22920 using the spectra obtained for three different phases of stellar rotation. We have found that silicon and chromium abundances appear to be vertically stratified in the atmosphere of HD 22920. We demonstrate a photonic circuit with integrated long-lived quantum memories. Pre-selected quantum nodes - diamond micro-waveguides containing single, stable, and negatively charged nitrogen vacancy centers - are deterministically integrated into low-loss silicon nitride waveguides. Each quantum memory node efficiently couples into the single-mode waveguide (> 1 Mcps collected into the waveguide) and exhibits long spin coherence times of up to 120 {\mu}s. Our system facilitates the assembly of multiple quantum memories into a photonic integrated circuit with near unity yield, paving the way towards scalable quantum information processing., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Optical frequency combs represent a revolutionary technology for high precision spectroscopy due to their narrow linewidths and precise frequency spacing. Generation of such combs in the mid-infrared (IR) spectral region (2-20 um) is of great interest due to the presence of a large number of gas absorption lines in this wavelength regime. Recently, frequency combs have been demonstrated in the MIR in several platforms, including fiber combs, mode-locked lasers, optical parametric oscillators, and quantum cascade lasers. However, these platforms are either relatively bulky or challenging to integrate on-chip. An alternative approach using parametric mixing in microresonators is highly promising since the platform is extremely compact and can operate with relatively low powers. However, material and dispersion engineering limitations have prevented the realization of a microresonator comb source past 2.55 um. Although silicon could in principle provide a CMOS compatible platform for on-chip comb generation deep into the mid-IR, to date, silicon's linear and nonlinear losses have prevented the realization of a microresonator-based comb source. Here we overcome these limitations and realize a broadband frequency comb spanning from 2.1 um to 3.5 um and demonstrate its viability as a spectroscopic sensing platform. Such a platform is compact and robust and offers the potential to be versatile and durable for use outside the laboratory environment for applications such as real-time monitoring of atmospheric gas conditions., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

According to a generalization of black hole thermodynamics to a cosmological framework, it is possible to define a temperature for the cosmological horizon. The hypothesis of thermal equilibrium between the dark energy and the horizon has been considered by many authors. We find the restrictions imposed by this hypothesis on the energy transfer rate ($Q_i$) between the cosmological fluids, assuming that the temperature of the horizon have the form $T=b/2\pi R$, where $R$ is the radius of the horizon. We more specifically consider two types of dark energy: holographic dark energy (HDE) and dark energy with a constant EoS parameter ($w$DE). In each case, we show that for a given radius $R$, there is an unique term $Q_{de}$ that is consistent with thermal equilibrium. We also consider the situation where, in addition to dark energy, other fluids (cold matter, radiation) are in thermal equilibrium with the horizon. We find that the interaction terms required for this will generally violate energy conservation ($\sum_i Q_i=0$).

Motivated by the cosmological constant and the coincidence problems, we consider a cosmological model where the dark sectors are interacting together through a phenomenological decay law $\dot{\rho}_{\Lambda}=Q\rho_{\Lambda}^n$ in a FRW spacetime with spatial curvature. We show that the only value of $n$ for which the late-time matter energy density to dark energy density ratio ($r_m=\rho_m/\rho_{\Lambda}$) is constant (which could provide an explanation to the coincidence problem) is $n=3/2$. For each value of $Q$, there are two distinct solutions. One of them involves a spatial curvature approaching zero at late times ($\rho_k\approx0$) and is stable when the interaction is weaker than a critical value ${Q_0=-\sqrt{32\pi G/c^2}}$. The other one allows for a non-negligible spatial curvature ($\rho_k\napprox0$) at late times and is stable when the interaction is stronger than $Q_0$. We constrain the model parameters using various observational data (SNeIa, GRB, CMB, BAO, OHD). The limits obtained on the parameters exclude the regions where the cosmological constant problem is significantly ameliorated and do not allow for a completely satisfying explanation for the coincidence problem., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

Silicon nitride (Si3N4) ring resonators are critical for a variety of photonic devices. However the intrinsically high film stress of silicon nitride has limited both the optical confinement and quality factor (Q) of ring resonators. We show that stress in Si3N4 films can be overcome by introducing mechanical trenches for isolating photonic devices from propagating cracks. We demonstrate a Si3N4 ring resonator with an intrinsic quality factor of 7 million, corresponding to a propagation loss of 4.2 dB/m. This is the highest quality factor reported to date for high confinement Si3N4 ring resonators in the 1550 nm wavelength range.

We demonstrate photonic devices based on standard 3C SiC epitaxially grown on silicon. We achieve high optical confinement by taking advantage of the high stiffness of SiC and undercutting the underlying silicon substrate. We demonstrate a 20 um radius suspended microring resonator with Q of 18000 fabricated on commercially available SiC-on-silicon substrates.

Significant effort in optical-fiber research has been put in recent years into realizing mode-division multiplexing (MDM) in conjunction with wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) to enable further scaling of the communication bandwidth per fiber. In contrast almost all integrated photonics operate exclusively in the single-mode regime. MDM is rarely considered for integrated photonics due to the difficulty in coupling selectively to high-order modes which usually results in high inter-modal crosstalk. Here we show the first demonstration of simultaneous on-chip mode and wavelength division multiplexing with low modal crosstalk and loss. Our approach can potentially increase the aggregate data rate by many times for on-chip ultra-high bandwidth communications.

Motivated by the cosmological constant and the coincidence problems, we consider a cosmological model where the cosmological constant $\Lambda_0$ is replaced by a cosmological term $\Lambda(t)$ which is allowed to vary in time. More specifically, we are considering that this dark energy term interacts with dark matter through the phenomenological decay law $\dot{\rho}_{\Lambda}=-Q\rho_{\Lambda}^{n}$. We have constrained the model for the range $n\in[0,10]$ using various observational data (SNeIa, GRB, CMB, BAO, OHD), emphasizing the case where $n=3/2$. This case is the only one where the late-time value for the ratio of dark energy density and matter energy density $\rho_{\Lambda}/\rho_{m}$ is constant, which could provide an interesting explanation to the coincidence problem. We obtain strong limits on the model parameters which however exclude the region where the coincidence or the cosmological constant problems are significantly ameliorated., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

In their rocksalt structure, rare-earth monosulfides offer a more stable alternative to alkali metals to attain low or negative electron affinity when deposited on various III-V and II-VI semiconductor surfaces. In this article, we first describe the successful deposition of Lanthanum Monosulfide via pulsed laser deposition on Si and MgO substrates and alumina templates. These thin films have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, ellipsometry, Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and Kelvin probe measurements. For both LaS/Si and LaS/MgO thin films, the effective work function of the submicron thick thin films was determined to be about 1 eV from field emission measurements using the Scanning Anode Field Emission Microscopy technique. The physical reasons for these highly desirable low work function properties were explained using a patchwork field emission model of the emitting surface. In this model, nanocrystals of low work function materials having a <100> orientation perpendicular to the surface and outcropping it are surrounded by a matrix of amorphous materials with higher work function. To date, LaS thin films have been used successfully as cold cathode emitters with measured emitted current densities as high as 50 A/cm2. Finally, we describe the successful growth of LaS thin films on InP substrates and, more recently, the production of LaS nanoballs and nanoclusters using Pulsed Laser Ablation., Comment: 61 pages, 24 figures

The ability to render objects invisible using a cloak - not detectable by an external observer - for concealing objects has been a tantalizing goal1-6. Here, we demonstrate a cloak operating in the near infrared at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The cloak conceals a deformation on a flat reflecting surface, under which an object can be hidden. The device has an area of 225 um2 and hides a region of 1.6 um2. It is composed of nanometre size silicon structures with spatially varying densities across the cloak. Reliable control of the deposition process of optical films and coatings frequently requires monitoring of the refractive index profile throughout the layer. In the present work a simple in situ approach is proposed which uses a WKBJ matrix representation of the optical transfer function of a single thin film on a substrate. Mathematical expressions are developed which represent the minima and maxima envelopes of the curves transmittance-vs-time and reflectance-vs-time. The refractive index and extinction coefficient depth profiles of different films are calculated from simulated spectra as well as from experimental data obtained during PECVD of silicon-compound films. Variation of the deposition rate with time is also evaluated from the position of the spectra extrema as a function of time.
