Semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides of group VI are well-known for their prominent excitonic effects and the transition from an indirect to a direct band gap when reduced to monolayers. While considerable efforts have elucidated the Rydberg series of excitons in monolayers, understanding their properties in multilayers remains incomplete. In these structures, despite an indirect band gap, momentum-direct excitons largely shape the optical response. In this work, we combine magneto-reflectance experiments with theoretical modeling based on the $\mathbf {k\cdot p}$ approach to investigate the origin of excitonic resonances in WSe$_2$ bi-, tri-, and quadlayers. For all investigated thicknesses, we observe a series of excitonic resonances in the reflectance spectra, initiated by a ground state with an amplitude comparable to the ground state of the 1$s$ exciton in the monolayer. Higher energy states exhibit a decrease in intensity with increasing energy, as expected for the excited states of the Rydberg series, although a significant increase in the diamagnetic shift is missing in tri- and quadlayers. By comparing the experimental observations with theoretical predictions, we discover that the excitonic resonances observed in trilayers originate from two Rydberg series, while quadlayers exhibit four such series, and bilayers host a single Rydberg series similar to that found in monolayers., Comment: 31 pages, 16 figures, published in Phys. Recent research focused on single photon emitters (SPEs) hosted by layered semiconductors, particularly hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), has revealed a promising alternative to quantum dots (QDs) for generating single, indistinguishable photons. hBN-based SPEs offer lower material costs, room temperature emission, and easy integration into potential optoelectronic devices due to the layered structure of the host crystal. This work presents compact hybrid electroluminescence devices, in which GaN laser diodes (LDs) are used for bottom-to-top excitation of hBN nanoflakes deposited on the laser facets. Our approach circumvents the issue of electroluminescence generation from hBN and provides access to the SPE's signal without optical driving by an external laser. Using laser diodes upgraded with Bragg reflectors a room-temperature generation of single photons from hBN is confirmed by an 80%-dip in their g(2) second-order correlation. The on-demand emission of single photons at room temperature is demonstrated by driving the laser diodes in pulsed operation, with confidence supported by a measured g(2)(0) value of 0.37.

The interaction between light and matter in condensed matter excitations and electromagnetic resonators serves as a rich playground for fundamental research and lies at the core of photonic and quantum technologies. Herein, we present comprehensive experimental and theoretical studies of the photon-mediated hybridization of magnons and phonons in the terahertz (THz) range. We demonstrate the intriguing concept of composite states formed by distinct electric and magnetic quasiparticles strongly coupled to the same optical cavity modes. Specifically, we explore magnons excited in a slab of an antiferromagnetic crystal and phonons excited in a distinct specimen of an insulating material. The crystal slabs form an optical cavity with Fabry-P\'erot oscillations in the THz range. We demonstrate hybridized phonon-magnon polariton modes and their tunability by adjusting the distance between the slabs, showing that hybridization persists even at separations up to several millimeters. The experimental results are interpreted using both classical and quantum electrodynamical models. The quantum description allows us to quantify the degree of hybridization that is linked to a topological behavior of the electric field phasor, in agreement with the classical electrodynamics expectations. Importantly, the presented results refer to temperature conditions and cavities of millimeter size, paving the way for engineering realistic, frequency-tunable THz devices through the hybridization of electric (phononics) and magnetic (spintronics) elementary excitations of matter.

Magnon gap excitations selectively coupled to phonon modes have been studied in FePSe$_3$ layered antiferromagnet with magneto-Raman scattering experiments performed at different temperatures. The bare magnon excitation in this material has been found to be split (by $\approx~1.2$ cm$^{-1}$) into two components each being selectively coupled to one of the two degenerated, nearby phonon modes. Lifting the degeneracy of the fundamental magnon mode points out toward the biaxial character of the FePS$_3$ antiferromagnet, with an additional in-plane anisotropy complementing much stronger, out-of-plane anisotropy. Moreover, the tunability, with temperature, of the phonon- versus the magnon-like character of the observed coupled modes has been demonstrated., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

A key advantage of utilizing van der Waals materials as defect-hosting platforms for quantum applications is the controllable proximity of the defect to the surface or the substrate for improved light extraction, enhanced coupling with photonic elements, or more sensitive metrology. However, this aspect results in a significant challenge for defect identification and characterization, as the defect's optoelectronic properties depend on the specifics of the atomic environment. Here we explore the mechanisms by which the environment can influence the properties of carbon impurity centres in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). We compare the optical and electronic properties of such defects between bulk-like and few-layer films, showing alteration of the zero-phonon line energies, modifications to their phonon sidebands, and enhancements of their inhomogeneous broadenings. To disentangle the various mechanisms responsible for these changes, including the atomic structure, electronic wavefunctions, and dielectric screening environment of the defect center, we combine ab-initio calculations based on a density-functional theory with a quantum embedding approach. By studying a variety of carbon-based defects embedded in monolayer and bulk hBN, we demonstrate that the dominant effect of the change in the environment is the screening of the density-density Coulomb interactions within and between the defect orbitals. Our comparative analysis of the experimental and theoretical findings paves the way for improved identification of defects in low-dimensional materials and the development of atomic scale sensors of dielectric environments., Comment: 38 pages, 7 figures

Using four-wave mixing microscopy, we measure the coherent response and ultrafast dynamics of excitons and trions in MoSe$_2$ monolayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy on thin films of hexagonal boron nitride. We assess inhomogeneous and homogeneous broadenings in the transition spectral lineshape. The impact of phonons on the homogeneous dephasing is inferred via the temperature dependence of the dephasing. Four-wave mixing mapping, combined with the atomic force microscopy, reveals spatial correlations between exciton oscillator strength, inhomogeneous broadening and the sample morphology. The quality of coherent optical response of the epitaxially grown transition metal dichalcogenides becomes now comparable with the samples produced by mechanical exfoliation, enabling coherent nonlinear spectroscopy of innovative materials, like magnetic layers or Janus semiconductors.

Quantifying and controlling the coherent dynamics and couplings of optically active excitations in solids is of paramount importance in fundamental research in condensed matter optics and for their prospective optoelectronic applications in quantum technologies. Here, we perform ultrafast coherent nonlinear spectroscopy of a charge-tunable MoSe$_2$ monolayer. The experiments show that the homogeneous and inhomogeneous line width and the population decay of exciton complexes hosted by this material can be directly tuned by an applied gate bias, which governs the Fermi level and therefore the free carrier density. By performing two-dimensional spectroscopy, we also show that the same bias-tuning approach permits us to control the coherent coupling strength between charged and neutral exciton complexes.

We report on magneto-optical studies of the quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals antiferromagnet FePS$_3$. Our measurements reveal an excitation that closely resembles the antiferromagnetic resonance mode typical of easy-axis antiferromagnets, nevertheless, it displays an unusual, four-times larger Zeeman splitting in an applied magnetic field. We identify this excitation with an $|S_z|=4$ multipolar magnon -- a single-ion 4-magnon bound state -- that corresponds to a full reversal of a single magnetic moment of the Fe$^{2+}$ ion. We argue that condensation of multipolar magnons in large-spin materials with a strong magnetic anisotropy can produce new exotic states., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures + supplement

The possibility of almost linear tuning of the band gap and of the electrical and optical properties in monolayers (MLs) of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide (S-TMD) alloys opens up the way to fabricate materials with on-demand characteristics. By making use of photoluminescence spectroscopy, we investigate optical properties of WSSe MLs with a S/Se ratio of 57/43 deposited on SiO$_2$/Si substrate and encapsulated in hexagonal BN flakes. Similarly to the $"parent"$ WS$_2$ and WSe$_2$ MLs, we assign the WSSe MLs to the ML family with the dark ground exciton state. We find that, in addition to the neutral bright A exciton line, three observed emission lines are associated with negatively charged excitons. The application of in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields allows us to assign undeniably the bright and dark (spin- and momentum-forbidden) negative trions as well as the phonon replica of the dark spin-forbidden complex. Furthermore, the existence of the single photon emitters in the WSSe ML is also demonstrated, thus prompting the opportunity to enlarge the wavelength range for potential future quantum applications of S-TMDs., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, +ESI

Magnetic layered materials have emerged recently as promising systems to introduce magnetism in structures based on two-dimensional (2D) materials and to investigate exotic magnetic ground states in the 2D limit. In this work, we apply high hydrostatic pressures up to P = 8.7 GPa to the bulk layered antiferromagnet FePS$_3$ to tune the collective lattice excitations (phonons) in resonance with magnetic excitations (magnons). Close to P = 4 GPa, the magnon-phonon resonance is achieved and the strong coupling between these collective modes leads to the formation of new quasi-particles, the magnon-polarons, evidenced in our low temperature Raman scattering experiments by a particular avoided crossing behavior between the phonon and the doubly degenerate antiferromagnetic magnon. At the pressure-induced magnon-phonon resonance, three distinct coupled modes emerge. As it is mainly defined by intralayer properties, we show that the energy of the magnon is nearly pressure independent. We additionally apply high magnetic fields up to B = 30 T to fully identify and characterize the magnon excitations, and to explore the different magnon-polaron regimes for which the phonon has an energy lower-, equal to-, or higher- than the magnon energy. Single spin defects in 2D transition-metal dichalcogenides are natural spin-photon interfaces for quantum applications. Here we report high-field magneto-photoluminescence spectroscopy from three emission lines (Q1, Q2 and Q*) of He-ion induced sulfur vacancies in monolayer $\text{MoS}_2$. Analysis of the asymmetric PL lineshapes in combination with the diamagnetic shift of Q1 and Q2 yields a consistent picture of localized emitters with a wavefunction extent of $\sim$ 3.5 nm. The distinct valley-Zeeman splitting in out-of-plane $B$-fields and the brightening of dark states through in-plane $B$-fields necessitates spin-valley selectivity of the defect states and lifted spin-degeneracy at zero field. Comparing our results to ab-initio calculations identifies the nature of Q1 and Q2 and suggests that Q* is the emission from a chemically functionalized defect. Analysis of the optical degree of circular polarization reveals that the Fermi level is a parameter that enables the tunability of the emitter. These results show that defects in 2D semiconductors may be utilized for quantum technologies.

Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides display a strong excitonic optical response. Additionally encapsulating the monolayer with hexagonal boron nitride allows to reach the limit of a purely homogeneously broadened exciton system. On such a MoSe$_{2}$-based system we perform ultrafast six-wave mixing spectroscopy and find a novel destructive photon echo effect. This process manifests as a characteristic depression of the nonlinear signal dynamics when scanning the delay between the applied laser pulses. By theoretically describing the process within a local field model we reach an excellent agreement with the experiment. We develop an effective Bloch vector representation and thereby demonstrate that the destructive photon echo stems from a destructive interference of successive repetitions of the heterodyning experiment.

We report magneto-photoluminescence spectroscopy of gated MoS$_2$ monolayers in high magnetic fields to 28 T. At B = 0T and electron density $n_s\sim 10^{12}cm^-2$, we observe three trion resonances that cannot be explained within a single-particle picture. Employing ab initio calculations that take into account three-particle correlation effects as well as local and non-local electron-hole exchange interaction, we identify those features as quantum superpositions of inter- and intravalley spin states. We experimentally investigate the mixed character of the trion wave function via the filling factor dependent valley Zeeman shift in positive and negative magnetic fields. Since their theoretical prediction by Peierls in the 30s, charge density waves (CDW) have been one of the most commonly encountered electronic phases in low dimensional metallic systems. The instability mechanism originally proposed combines Fermi surface nesting and electron-phonon coupling but is, strictly speaking, only valid in one dimension. In higher dimensions, its relevance is questionable as sharp maxima in the static electronic susceptibility \chi(q) are smeared out, and are, in many cases, unable to account for the periodicity of the observed charge modulations. Here, we investigate the quasi twodimensional LaAgSb2, which exhibits two CDW transitions, by a combination of diffuse xray scattering, inelastic x-ray scattering and ab initio calculations. We demonstrate that the CDW formation is driven by phonons softening. The corresponding Kohn anomalies are visualized in 3D through the momentum distribution of the x-ray diffuse scattering intensity. We show that they can be quantitatively accounted for by considering the electronic susceptibility calculated from a Dirac-like band, weighted by anisotropic electron-phonon coupling. Using a novel approach to ultrafast resonant pump-probe spectroscopy we investigate the spectral shape and dynamics of absorption features related to the A exciton in an hBN/MoSe$_2$/hBN van der Waals heterostructure. While in a pure two-level system a pump-probe experiment measures the occupation or the polarization dynamics, depending on the time ordering of the pulse pair, in the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) system both quantities get thoroughly mixed by strong exciton-exciton interaction. We find that for short positive delays the spectral lines experience pronounced changes in their shape and energy and they relax to the original situation on a picosecond time scale. For negative delays distinctive spectral oscillations appear indicating the first-time observation of perturbed free induction decay for a TMD system. The comparison between co-circular and cross-circular excitation schemes further allows us to investigate the rapid inter-valley scattering. By considering a three-level system as a minimal model including the local field effect, excitation induced dephasing and scattering between the excited states we explain all phenomena observed in the experiment with excellent consistency. Our handy model can be even further reduced to two levels in the case of a co-circular excitation, for which we derive analytic expressions to describe the detected signals. This allows us to trace back the spectral shapes and shifts to the impact of local field effect and excitation induced dephasing thus fully reproducing the complex behavior of the observed effects.

Strong Coulomb correlations together with multi-valley electronic bands in the presence of spin-orbit interaction and possible new optoelectronic applications are at the heart of studies of the rich physics of excitons in semiconductor structures made of monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD). In intrinsic TMD monolayers the basic, intravalley excitons are formed by a hole from the top of the valence band and an electron either from the lower or upper spin-orbit-split conduction band subbands: one of these excitons is optically active, the second one is "dark", although possibly observed under special conditions. Here we demonstrate the s-series of Rydberg dark exciton states in monolayer WSe$_2$, which appears in addition to a conventional bright exciton series in photoluminescence spectra measured in high in-plane magnetic fields. The comparison of energy ladders of bright and dark Rydberg excitons is shown to be a method to experimentally evaluate one of the missing band parameters in TMD monolayers: the amplitude of the spin-orbit splitting of the conduction band., Comment: Manuscript: 9 pages, 4 figures; SM: 3 pages, 2 figures

We report magneto-optical spectroscopy of gated monolayer MoS$_2$ in high magnetic fields up to 28T and obtain new insights on the many-body interaction of neutral and charged excitons with the resident charges of distinct spin and valley texture. For neutral excitons at low electron doping, we observe a nonlinear valley Zeeman shift due to dipolar spin-interactions that depends sensitively on the local carrier concentration. As the Fermi energy increases to dominate over the other relevant energy scales in the system, the magneto-optical response depends on the occupation of the fully spin-polarized Landau levels in both $K/K^{\prime}$ valleys. This manifests itself in a many-body state. Our experiments demonstrate that the exciton in monolayer semiconductors is only a single particle boson close to charge neutrality. We make use of micro-magneto Raman scattering spectroscopy to probe magneto-phonon resonances (MPR) in suspended mono- to penta-layer graphene. MPR correspond to avoided crossings between zone-center optical phonons (G-mode) and optically-active inter Landau level (LL) transitions and provide a tool to perform LL spectroscopy at a fixed energy ($\approx 197~\rm{meV}$) set by the G-mode phonon. Using a single-particle effective bilayer model, we readily extract the velocity parameter associated with each MPR. A single velocity parameter slightly above the bulk graphite value suffices to fit all MPR for $N\geq2$ layer systems. In contrast, in monolayer graphene, we find that the velocity parameter increases significantly from $(1.23\pm 0.01) \times 10^6~\mathrm{m.s^{-1}}$ up to $(1.45\pm0.02) \times 10^6~\mathrm{m.s^{-1}}$ as the first to third optically-active inter LL transition couple to the G-mode phonon. This result is understood as a signature of enhanced many-body effects in unscreened graphene., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Zeeman effect induced by the magnetic field introduces a splitting between the two valleys at K$^+$ and K$^-$ points of the Brillouin zone in monolayer semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides. In consequence, the photoluminescence signal exhibits a field dependent degree of circular polarization. We present a comprehensive study of this effect in the case of a trion in monolayer MoTe$_2$, showing that although time integrated data allows us to deduce a g-factor of the trion state, such an analysis cannot be substantiated by the timescales revealed in the time-resolved experiments.

We report experimental and theoretical studies on the magnetoelastic interactions in MnPS$_3$. Raman scattering response measured as a function of temperature shows a blue shift of the Raman active modes at 120.2 and 155.1 cm$^{-1}$, when the temperature is raised across the antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to estimate the effective exchange interactions and calculate the Raman active phonon modes. The calculations lead to the conclusion that the peculiar behavior with temperature of the two low energy phonon modes can be explained by the symmetry of their corresponding normal coordinates which involve the virtual modification of the super-exchange angles associated with the leading antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions., Comment: Main: 9 pages, 7 figures. We investigate dynamics of resonantly excited excitons in single-layers of MoSe$_2$ and WS$_2$ down to 4.5 K. To this end, we measure the delay dependence of the heterodyne four-wave mixing (FWM) amplitude induced by three, short laser pulses. This signal depends not only on the population of optically active excitons, which affects the absorption of the probe, but also on the population of optically inactive states, by interaction-induced energy shift, influencing the refractive index experienced by the probe. As such, it offers insight into density dynamics of excitons which do not directly couple to photons. Reproducing the coherent signal detected in amplitude and phase, the FWM delay dependence is modeled by a coherent superposition of several exponential decay components, with characteristic time constants from 0.1 picosecond up to 1 nanosecond. With increasing excitation intensity and/or temperature, we observe strong interference effects in the FWM field amplitude, resulting in progressively more complex and nonintuitive signal dynamics. We attribute this behaviour to increasingly populated exciton dark states, which change the FWM field phase by the relative effect on absorption and refractive index. We observe that exciton recombination occurs on a significantly longer timescale in WS$_2$ with respect to MoSe$_2$, which is attributed to the dark character of exciton ground state in the former and the bright in the latter.

We perform coherent nonlinear spectroscopy of excitons in single-layers of MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ encapsulated between thin films of hexagonal boron nitride. Employing four-wave mixing microscopy we identify virtually disorder free areas, generating exciton optical response at the homogeneous limit. Focussing on such areas, we measure exciton homogeneous broadening as a function of environmental factors, namely temperature and exciton density. Exploiting FWM imaging, we find that at such locations, nonlinear absorption of the exciton excited states and their coherent couplings can be observed. Using the WSe$_2$ heterostructure, we infer coherence and density dynamics of the exciton 2S state. Owing to its increased radiative lifetime, at low temperatures, the dephasing of the 2S state is longer than of the 1S transition. While scanning various heterostructures across tens of micrometers, we conclude that the disorder, principally induced by strain variations, remain to be present creating spatially varying inhomogeneous broadening.

At cryogenic temperatures, the photoluminescence spectrum of monolayer WSe2features a num-ber of lines related to the recombination of so-called localized excitons. The intensity of these lines strongly decreases with increasing temperature. In order to understand the mechanism behind this phenomenon, we carried out a time-resolved experiment, which revealed a similar trend in the photoluminescence decay time. Our results identify the opening of additional nonradiative relaxation channels as a primary cause of the observed temperature quenching of the localized excitons' photoluminescence.

We perform absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy of trions in hBN-encapsulated WSe$_2$, WS$_2$, MoSe$_2$, and MoS$_2$ monolayers, depending on temperature. The different trends for W- and Mo-based materials are excellently reproduced considering a Fermi-Dirac distribution of bright and dark trions. We find a dark trion, $\rm{X_D^-}$ 19 meV $\textit{below}$ the lowest bright trion, $\rm{X}_1^-$ in WSe$_2$ and WS$_2$. In MoSe$_2$, $\rm{X_D^-}$ lies 6 meV $\textit{above}$ $\rm{X}_1^-$, while $\rm{X_D^-}$ and $\rm{X}_1^-$ almost coincide in MoS$_2$. Monolayers and multilayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) offer an ideal platform to explore valley-selective physics with promising applications in valleytronics and information processing. Here we manipulate the energetic degeneracy of the $\mathrm{K}^+$ and $\mathrm{K}^-$ valleys in few-layer TMDCs. We perform high-field magneto-reflectance spectroscopy on WSe$_2$, MoSe$_2$, and MoTe$_2$ crystals of thickness from monolayer to the bulk limit under magnetic fields up to 30 T applied perpendicular to the sample plane. Because of a strong spin-layer locking, the ground state A excitons exhibit a monolayer-like valley Zeeman splitting with a negative $g$-factor, whose magnitude increases monotonically when thinning the crystal down from bulk to a monolayer. Using the $\mathbf{k\cdot p}$ calculation, we demonstrate that the observed evolution of $g$-factors for different materials is well accounted for by hybridization of electronic states in the $\mathrm{K}^+$ and $\mathrm{K}^-$ valleys. The mixing of the valence and conduction band states induced by the interlayer interaction decreases the $g$-factor magnitude with an increasing layer number. The effect is the largest for MoTe$_2$, followed by MoSe$_2$, and smallest for WSe$_2$. We study the relaxation dynamics of the electron system in graphene flakes under Landau quantization regime using a novel approach of time-resolved Raman scattering. The non-resonant character of the experiment allows us to analyze the field dependence of the relaxation rate. Our results clearly evidence sharp increase in the relaxation rate upon the resonance between the energy of the Landau transition and the G-band and shed new light on relaxation mechanism of the Landau-quantized electrons in graphene beyond the previously studied Auger scattering.

The effect of bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonimide (TFSI, superacid) treatment on the optical properties of MoS$_2$ monolayers is investigated by means of photoluminescence, reflectance contrast and Raman scattering spectroscopy employed in a broad temperature range. It is shown that when applied multiple times, the treatment results in progressive quenching of the trion emission/absorption and in the redshift of the neutral exciton emission/absorption associated with both the A and B excitonic resonances. Based on this evolution, a trion complex related to the B exciton in monolayer MoS$_2$ is unambiguously identified. A defect-related emission observed at low temperatures also disappears from the spectrum as a result of the treatment. Our observations are attributed to effective passivation of defects on the MoS$_{2}$ monolayer surface. The passivation reduces the carrier density, which in turn affects the out-of-plane electric field in the sample. The observed tuning of the carrier concentration strongly influences also the Raman scattering in the MoS$_2$ monolayer. An enhancement of Raman scattering at resonant excitation in the vicinity of the A neutral exciton is clearly seen for both the out-of-plane A$_1^{'}$ and in-plane E$^{'}$ modes. On the contrary, when the excitation is in resonance with a corresponding trion, the Raman scattering features become hardly visible. These results confirm the role of the excitonic charge state plays in the resonance effect of the excitation energy on the Raman scattering in transition metal dichalcogenides., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We present comprehensive optical studies of recently discovered single photon sources in boron nitride, which appear in form of narrow lines emitting centres. Here, we aim to compactly characterise their basic optical properties, including the demonstration of several novel findings, in order to inspire discussion about their origin and utility. Initial inspection reveals the presence of narrow emission lines in boron nitride powder and exfoliated flakes of hexagonal boron nitride deposited on Si/SiO2 substrates. Generally rather stable, the boron nitride emitters constitute a good quality visible light source. However, as briefly discussed, certain specimens reveal a peculiar type of blinking effects, which are likely related to existence of meta-stable electronic states. More advanced characterisation of representative stable emitting centres uncovers a strong dependence of the emission intensity on the energy and polarisation of excitation. On this basis, we speculate that rather strict excitation selectivity is an important factor determining the character of the emission spectra, which allows the observation of single and well-isolated emitters. Finally, we investigate the properties of the emitting centres in varying external conditions. Quite surprisingly, it is found that the application of a magnetic field introduces no change in the emission spectra of boron nitride emitters. Further analysis of the impact of temperature on the emission spectra and the features seen in second-order correlation functions is used to provide an assessment of the potential functionality of boron nitride emitters as single photon sources capable of room temperature operation.

The crystallographic stacking order in multilayer graphene plays an important role in determining its electronic properties. It has been predicted that a rhombohedral (ABC) stacking displays a conducting surface state with flat electronic dispersion. In such a flat band, the role of electron-electron correlation is enhanced possibly resulting in high Tc superconductivity, charge density wave or magnetic orders. Clean experimental band structure measurements of ABC stacked specimens are missing because the samples are usually too small in size. Here, we directly image the band structure of large multilayer graphene flake containing approximately 14 consecutive ABC layers. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments reveal the flat electronic bands near the K point extends by 0.13 {\AA}-1 at the Fermi level at liquid nitrogen temperature. First-principle calculations identify the electronic ground state as an antiferromagnetic state with a band gap of about 40 meV.

We present a comprehensive optical study of thin films of tungsten disulfide (WS$_2$) with layer thicknesses ranging from mono- to octalayer and in the bulk limit. It is shown that the optical band-gap absorption of monolayer WS$_2$ is governed by competing resonances arising from one neutral and two distinct negatively charged excitons whose contributions to the overall absorption of light vary as a function of temperature and carrier concentration. The photoluminescence response of monolayer WS$_2$ is found to be largely dominated by disorder/impurity- and/or phonon-assisted recombination processes. The indirect band-gap luminescence in multilayer WS$_2$ turns out to be a phonon-mediated process whose energy evolution with the number of layers surprisingly follows a simple model of a two-dimensional confinement. The energy position of the direct band-gap response (A and B resonances) is only weakly dependent on the layer thickness, which underlines an approximate compensation of the effect of the reduction of the exciton binding energy by the shrinkage of the apparent band gap. The A-exciton absorption-type spectra in multilayer WS$_2$ display a non-trivial fine structure which results from the specific hybridization of the electronic states in the vicinity of the K-point of the Brillouin zone. Resonant Raman scattering is investigated in monolayer WS$_2$ at low temperature with the aid of an unconventional spectroscopy technique, $i.e.$, Raman scattering excitation (RSE). The RSE spectrum is made up by sweeping the excitation energy, when the detection energy is fixed in resonance with excitonic transitions related to neutral and/or charged excitons. We demonstrate that the shape of the RSE spectrum strongly depends on a selected detection energy. The out-going resonance with the neutral exciton leads to an extremely rich RSE spectrum displaying several Raman scattering features not reported so far, while no clear effect on the associated background photoluminescence is observed. Instead, a strong enhancement of the emission due to the negatively charged exciton is apparent when the out-going photons resonate with this exciton. Presented results show that the RSE spectroscopy can be a useful technique to study electron-phonon interactions in thin layers of transition metal dichalcogenides., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Optical orientation of localized/bound excitons is shown to be effectively enhanced by the application of magnetic fields as low as 20 mT in monolayer WS$_2$. At low temperatures, the evolution of the polarization degree of different emission lines of monolayer WS$_2$ with increasing magnetic fields is analyzed and compared to similar results obtained on a WSe$_2$ monolayer. We study the temperature dependence of this effect up to $T=60$ K for both materials, focusing on the dynamics of the valley pseudospin relaxation. A rate equation model is used to analyze our data and from the analysis of the width of the polarization deep in magnetic field we conclude that the competition between the dark exciton pseudospin relaxation and the decay of the dark exciton population into the localized states are rather different in these two materials which are representative of the two extreme cases for the ratio of relaxation rate and depolarization rate.

We present the results of a comprehensive magneto-optical characterization of single CdTe quantum dots containing a few Mn2+ ions. We find that some quantum dots exhibit an unexpected evolution of excitonic photoluminescence spectrum with the magnetic field. At a certain value of the magnetic field, specific for every quantum dot, each of the broad spectral lines related to the recombination of various excitonic complexes confined inside the dot transforms into a pair of narrow lines split by several meV. We interpret this abrupt change in the character of excitonic emission spectrum as a consequence of a transition from a non-polarized state of the Mn2+ spins in a low field regime to a highly (almost fully) polarized state above the critical magnetic field. Various optical experiments, including polarization-resolved studies, investigation of different excitation regimes and time-resolved measurements corroborate this scenario. However, these measurements indicate also that the observed effect is not related or influenced by the photo-created charge carriers, but it is rather originating from unusual spin configuration in the cluster of Mn2+ ions.

By implementing four-wave mixing (FWM) micro-spectroscopy we measure coherence and population dynamics of the exciton transitions in monolayers of MoSe$_2$. We reveal their dephasing times T$_2$ and radiative lifetime T$_1$ in a sub-picosecond (ps) range, approaching T$_2$=2T$_1$, and thus indicating radiatively limited dephasing at a temperature of 6$\,$K. We elucidate the dephasing mechanisms by varying the temperature and by probing various locations on the flake exhibiting a different local disorder. At a nanosecond range, we observe the residual FWM produced by the incoherent excitons, which initially disperse towards the dark states, but then relax back to the optically active states within the light cone. By introducing polarization-resolved excitation, we infer inter-valley exciton dynamics, showing an initial polarization degree of around 30$\,\%$, constant during the initial sub-picosecond decay, followed by the depolarization on a picosecond timescale. The FWM hyperspectral imaging reveals the doped and undoped areas of the sample, allowing to investigate the neutral exciton, the charged one or both transitions at the same time. In the latter case, we observe the exciton-trion beating in the coherence evolution indicating their coherent coupling.

We present the micro-photoluminescence ($\mu$PL) and micro-reflectance contrast spectroscopy studies on thin films of MoSe2 with layer thicknesses ranging from a monolayer (1L) up to 5L. The thickness dependent evolution of the ground and excited state excitonic transitions taking place at various points of the Brillouin zone is determined. Temperature activated energy shifts and linewidth broadenings of the excitonic resonances in 1L, 2L and 3L flakes are accounted for by using standard formalisms previously developed for semiconductors. A peculiar shape of the optical response of the ground state (A) exciton in monolayer MoSe2 is tentatively attributed to the appearance of Fano-type resonance. Rather trivial and clearly decaying PL spectra of monolayer MoSe2 with temperature confirm that the ground state exciton in this material is optically bright in contrast to a dark exciton ground state in monolayer WSe2., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, excitons, MoSe2, 2D semiconductors, Transition metal dichalcogenides, excited states of excitons, Fano-resonance

We study the evolution of the band-gap structure in few-layer MoTe$_2$ crystals, by means of low-temperature micro-reflectance (MR) and temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) measurements. The analysis of the measurements indicate that, in complete analogy with other semiconducting transition metal dichalchogenides (TMDs), the dominant PL emission peaks originate from direct transitions associated to recombination of excitons and trions. When we follow the evolution of the PL intensity as a function of layer thickness, however, we observe that MoTe$_2$ behaves differently from other semiconducting TMDs investigated earlier. Specifically, the exciton PL yield (integrated PL intensity) is identical for mono and bilayer and it starts decreasing for trilayers. A quantitative analysis of this behavior and of all our experimental observations is fully consistent with mono and bilayer MoTe$_2$ being direct band-gap semiconductors, with tetralayer MoTe$_2$ being an indirect gap semiconductor, and with trilayers having nearly identical direct and indirect gaps.This conclusion is different from the one reached for other recently investigated semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, for which only monolayers are found to be direct band-gap semiconductors, with thicker layers having indirect band gaps that are significantly smaller, by hundreds of meV, than the direct gap. Refined infrared magnetotransmission experiments have been performed in magnetic fields B up to 35 T on a series of multilayer epitaxial graphene samples. Following the main optical transition involving the n=0 Landau level (LL), we observe a new absorption transition increasing in intensity with magnetic fields B>26 T. Our analysis shows that this is a signature of the breaking of the SU(4) symmetry of the n=0 LL. Using a quantitative model, we show that the only symmetry-breaking scheme consistent with our experiments is a charge density wave (CDW).

We present optical spectroscopy (photoluminescence and reflectance) studies of thin layers of the transition metal dichalcogenide WSe2, with thickness ranging from mono- to tetra-layer and in the bulk limit. The investigated spectra show the evolution of excitonic resonances as a function of layer thickness, due to changes in the band structure and, importantly, due to modifications of the strength of Coulomb interaction as well. The observed temperature-activated energy shift and broadening of the fundamental direct exciton are well accounted for by standard formalisms used for conventional semiconductors. A large increase of the photoluminescence yield with temperature is observed in WSe2 monolayer, indicating the existence of competing radiative channels. The observation of absorption-type resonances due to both neutral and charged excitons in WSe2 monolayer is reported and the effect of the transfer of oscillator strength from charged to neutral exciton upon increase of temperature is demonstrated., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

The absence of an energy gap separating valence and conduction bands makes the low-energy electronic properties of graphene and its multi-layers sensitive to electron-electron interactions. In bilayers, for instance, interactions are predicted to open a gap at charge neutrality, turning the system into an insulator, as observed experimentally. In mono and (Bernal-stacked) trilayers, interactions, although still important, do not have an equally drastic effect, and these systems remain conducting at low temperature. It may be expected that interaction effects become weaker for thicker multilayers, whose behavior should eventually converge to that of graphite. Here we show that this expectation does not correspond to reality by investigating the case of Bernal-stacked tetralayer graphene (4LG). We reveal the occurrence of a robust insulating state in a narrow range of carrier densities around charge neutrality, incompatible with the behavior expected from the single-particle band structure. The phenomenology resembles that observed in bilayers, but the stronger conductance suppression makes the insulating state in 4LG visible at higher temperature. To account for our findings, we suggest a natural generalization of the interaction-driven, symmetry-broken states proposed for bilayers. We probe electronic excitations between Landau levels in freestanding $N-$layer graphene over a broad energy range, with unprecedented spectral and spatial resolution, using micro-magneto Raman scattering spectroscopy. A characteristic evolution of electronic bands in up to five Bernal-stacked graphene layers is evidenced and shown to remarkably follow a simple theoretical approach, based on an effective bilayer model. $(N>3)$-layer graphene appear as appealing candidates in the quest for novel phenomena, particularly in the quantum Hall effect regime. Our work paves the way towards minimally-invasive investigations of magneto-excitons in other emerging low-dimensional systems, with a spatial resolution down to 1$~\mu$m., Comment: to appear in Nano Letters

We study the absorption spectra of the yellow excitons in Cu$_2$O in high magnetic fields using polarization-resolved optical absorption measurements with a high frequency resolution. We show that the symmetry of the yellow exciton results in unusual selection rules for the optical absorption of polarized light and that the mixing of ortho- and para- excitons in magnetic field is important. Our calculation of the energies of the yellow exciton series in an arbitrary magnetic field gives an excellent fit to experimental data and allows us to understand the complex structure of excitonic levels and their magnetic field dependence, which resolves the old-standing disagreement between the results of optical absorption and cyclotron resonance measurements., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

We study the carrier dynamics in epitaxially grown graphene in the range of photon energies from 10 - 250 meV. The experiments complemented by microscopic modeling reveal that the carrier relaxation is significantly slowed down as the photon energy is tuned to values below the optical phonon frequency, however, owing to the presence of hot carriers, optical phonon emission is still the predominant relaxation process. For photon energies about twice the value of the Fermi energy, a transition from pump-induced transmission to pump-induced absorption occurs due to the interplay of interband and intraband processes.

Since its inception in 2001, the science and technology of epitaxial graphene on hexagonal silicon carbide has matured into a major international effort and is poised to become the first carbon electronics platform. A historical perspective is presented and the unique electronic properties of single and multilayered epitaxial graphenes on electronics grade silicon carbide are reviewed. Early results on transport and the field effect in Si-face grown graphene monolayers provided proof-of-principle demonstrations. Besides monolayer epitaxial graphene, attention is given to C-face grown multilayer graphene, which consists of electronically decoupled graphene sheets. Production, structure, and electronic structure are reviewed. The electronic properties, interrogated using a wide variety of surface, electrical and optical probes, are discussed. An overview is given of recent developments of several device prototypes including resistance standards based on epitaxial graphene quantum Hall devices and new ultrahigh frequency analog epitaxial graphene amplifiers., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures to be published in J. Multi-layer epitaxial graphene (MEG) is investigated using far infrared (FIR) transmission experiments in the different limits of low magnetic fields and high temperatures. The cyclotron-resonance like absorption is observed at low temperature in magnetic fields below 50 mT, allowing thus to probe the nearest vicinity of the Dirac point and to estimate the conductivity in nearly undoped graphene. The carrier mobility is found to exceed 250,000 cm$^2$/(V.s). In the limit of high temperatures, the well-defined Landau level (LL) quantization is observed up to room temperature at magnetic fields below 1 T, a phenomenon unique in solid state systems. A negligible increase in the width of the cyclotron resonance lines with increasing temperature indicates that no important scattering mechanism is thermally activated, supporting recent expectations of high room-temperature mobilities in graphene., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Graphene multilayers are grown epitaxially on single crystal silicon carbide. This system is composed of several graphene layers of which the first layer is electron doped due to the built-in electric field and the other layers are essentially undoped. Unlike graphite the charge carriers show Dirac particle properties (i.e. an anomalous Berry's phase, weak anti-localization and square root field dependence of the Landau level energies). Epitaxial graphene shows quasi-ballistic transport and long coherence lengths; properties which may persists above cryogenic temperatures. Paradoxically, in contrast to exfoliated graphene, the quantum Hall effect is not observed in high mobility epitaxial graphene. It appears that the effect is suppressed due to absence of localized states in the bulk of the material.Epitaxial graphene can be patterned using standard lithography methods and characterized using a wide array of techniques. These favorable features indicate that interconnected room temperature ballistic devices may be feasible for low dissipation high-speed nanoelectronics., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, submitted to Solid State Communications.

In two-beam magneto-photoluminescence spectra of a two-dimensional valence hole gas we identify the three-level energy spectrum of a free positive trion with a field-induced singlet-triplet transition. The recombination spectrum of acceptor-bound trions is also detected, including a cyclotron replica corresponding to the hole shake-up process. The emergence of a shake-up peak at low temperature is shown to be a sensitive probe of the presence of a small number of impurities inside the high-mobility quantum well, and its relative position is directly related to the hole cyclotron mass., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the interband transitions in several ensembles of self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots by using photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy under strong magnetic field. Well defined resonances are observed in the spectra. A strong anticrossing between two transitions is observed in all samples, which cannot be accounted for by a purely excitonic model. The coupling between the mixed exciton-LO phonon states is calculated using the Fr\"{o}hlich Hamiltonian. The excitonic polaron energies as well as the oscillator strengths of the interband transitions are determined. An anticrossing is predicted when two exciton-LO phonon states have close enough energies with phonon occupations which differ by one. A good agreement is found between the calculations and the experimental data evidencing the existence of excitonic polarons.

Density of states (DOS) and absorption spectrum of weakly doped, narrow quantum wells in high magnetic fields are calculated by realistic exact diagonalization. The systems containing an electron--hole pair with and without an additional, second electron are compared. In DOS, the exciton--electron interaction is shown to fill the gaps between Landau levels and to yield additional discrete peaks corresponding to bound trion states. In absorption, interaction with the additional free electron causes no shift or renormalization of main, excitonic peaks. However, it results in additional, weaker peaks associated with bound trions in the lowest or higher Landau levels. The calculation is supplemented with experimental photoluminescence and photoluminescence-excitation studies of two-dimensional holes and electrons in high magnetic fields., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures
