Search

Extracting tables from documents is a critical task across various industries, especially on business documents like invoices and reports. Existing systems based on DEtection TRansformer (DETR) such as TAble TRansformer (TATR), offer solutions for Table Detection (TD) and Table Structure Recognition (TSR) but face challenges with diverse table formats and common errors like incorrect area detection and overlapping columns. This research introduces RAPTOR, a modular post-processing system designed to enhance state-of-the-art models for improved table extraction, particularly for product tables. RAPTOR addresses recurrent TD and TSR issues, improving both precision and structural predictions. For TD, we use DETR (trained on ICDAR 2019) and TATR (trained on PubTables-1M and FinTabNet), while TSR only relies on TATR. A Genetic Algorithm is incorporated to optimize RAPTOR's module parameters, using a private dataset of product tables to align with industrial needs. We evaluate our method on two private datasets of product tables, the public DOCILE dataset (which contains tables similar to our target product tables), and the ICDAR 2013 and ICDAR 2019 datasets. The results demonstrate that while our approach excels at product tables, it also maintains reasonable performance across diverse table formats. Inspired by recent experimental observations of a harmonically excited elastic foil hovering near a wall while supporting substantial weight, we develop a theoretical framework that describes the underlying physical effects. Using elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory, we quantify how the dynamic deformation of the soft foil couples to the viscous fluid flow in the intervening gap. Our analysis shows that the soft foil rectifies the reversible forcing, breaking time-reversal symmetry; the relative spatial support of the forcing determines whether the sheet is attracted to or repelled from the wall. A simple scaling law predicts the time-averaged equilibrium hovering height and the maximum weight the sheet can sustain before detaching from the surface. Numerical simulations of the governing equation corroborate our theoretical predictions, are in qualitative agreement with experiments, and might explain the behavior of organisms while providing design principles for soft robotics., Comment: 4 pages

Deep surveys reveal tidal debris and associated compact stellar systems. Euclid's unique combination of capabilities (spatial resolution, depth, and wide sky coverage) will make it a groundbreaking tool for galactic archaeology in the local Universe, bringing low surface brightness (LSB) science into the era of large-scale astronomical surveys. Euclid's Early Release Observations (ERO) demonstrate this potential with a field of view that includes several galaxies in the Dorado group. In this paper, we aim to derive from this image a mass assembly scenario for its main galaxies: NGC 1549, NGC 1553, and NGC 1546. We detect internal and external diffuse structures, and identify candidate globular clusters (GCs). By analysing the colours and distributions of the diffuse structures and candidate GCs, we can place constraints on the galaxies' mass assembly and merger histories. The results show that feature morphology, surface brightness, colours, and GC density profiles are consistent with galaxies that have undergone different merger scenarios. We classify NGC 1549 as a pure elliptical galaxy that has undergone a major merger. NGC 1553 appears to have recently transitioned from a late-type galaxy to early type, after a series of radial minor to intermediate mergers. NGC 1546 is a rare specimen of galaxy with an undisturbed disk and a prominent diffuse stellar halo, which we infer has been fed by minor mergers and then disturbed by the tidal effect from NGC 1553. Finally, we identify limitations specific to the observing conditions of this ERO, in particular stray light in the visible and persistence in the near-infrared bands. Once these issues are addressed and the extended emission from LSB objects is preserved by the data-processing pipeline, the Euclid Wide Survey will allow studies of the local Universe to be extended to statistical ensembles over a large part of the extragalactic sky., Comment: 25 pages, 20 figures

A recent study of the distribution of dwarf galaxies in the MATLAS sample in galaxy groups revealed an excess of flattened satellite structures, reminiscent of the co-rotating planes of dwarf galaxies discovered in the local Universe. If confirmed, this lends credence to the plane-of-satellite problem and further challenges the standard model of hierarchical structure formation. However, with only photometric data and no confirmation of the satellite membership, the study could not address the plane-of-satellite problem in full detail. Here we present spectroscopic follow-up observations of one of the most promising planes-of-satellites candidates in the MATLAS survey, the satellite system of NGC 474. Employing MUSE at the VLT and full spectrum fitting, we studied 13 dwarf galaxy candidates and confirmed nine to be members of the field around NGC 474. Measuring the stellar populations of all observed galaxies, we find that the MATLAS dwarfs have lower metallicities than the Local Group dwarfs at given luminosity. Two dwarf galaxies may form a pair of satellites based on their close projection and common velocity. Within the virial radius, we do not find a significant plane-of-satellites, however, there is a sub-population of six dwarf galaxies which seem to be anti-correlated in phase-space. Due to the low number of dwarf galaxies, this signal may arise by chance. With over 2000 dwarf galaxy candidates found in the MATLAS survey, this remains an intriguing data set to study the plane-of-satellites problem in a statistical fashion once more follow-up observations have been conducted., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. The Privacy Preserving Federated Learning Document VQA (PFL-DocVQA) competition challenged the community to develop provably private and communication-efficient solutions in a federated setting for a real-life use case: invoice processing. The competition introduced a dataset of real invoice documents, along with associated questions and answers requiring information extraction and reasoning over the document images. Thereby, it brings together researchers and expertise from the document analysis, privacy, and federated learning communities. Participants fine-tuned a pre-trained, state-of-the-art Document Visual Question Answering model provided by the organizers for this new domain, mimicking a typical federated invoice processing setup. The base model is a multi-modal generative language model, and sensitive information could be exposed through either the visual or textual input modality. Participants proposed elegant solutions to reduce communication costs while maintaining a minimum utility threshold in track 1 and to protect all information from each document provider using differential privacy in track 2. The competition served as a new testbed for developing and testing private federated learning methods, simultaneously raising awareness about privacy within the document image analysis and recognition community. Ultimately, the competition analysis provides best practices and recommendations for successfully running privacy-focused federated learning challenges in the future., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures

Large language models (LLMs) have shown impressive potential in helping with numerous medical challenges. Deploying LLMs in high-stakes applications such as medicine, however, brings in many concerns. One major area of concern relates to biased behaviors of LLMs in medical applications, leading to unfair treatment of individuals. To pave the way for the responsible and impactful deployment of Med LLMs, rigorous evaluation is a key prerequisite. Due to the huge complexity and variability of different medical scenarios, existing work in this domain has primarily relied on using manually crafted datasets for bias evaluation. In this study, we present a new method to scale up such bias evaluations by automatically generating test cases based on rigorous medical evidence. We specifically target the challenges of a) domain-specificity of bias characterization, b) hallucinating while generating the test cases, and c) various dependencies between the health outcomes and sensitive attributes. To that end, we offer new methods to address these challenges integrated with our generative pipeline, using medical knowledge graphs, medical ontologies, and customized general LLM evaluation frameworks in our method. Through a series of extensive experiments, we show that the test cases generated by our proposed method can effectively reveal bias patterns in Med LLMs at larger and more flexible scales than human-crafted datasets. We publish a large bias evaluation dataset using our pipeline, which is dedicated to a few medical case studies. This study reports the successful fabrication of high-positive refractive index change waveguides, exceeding 0.02 in fluoride glasses, marking a significant advancement in integrated optical components for visible to mid-infrared applications. This research overcomes longstanding challenges in direct-write photonics and therefore enables the realization of true 3D geometries in optical elements, access to novel visible lasing wavelengths typically suppressed in high phonon hosts, and the miniaturization of mid-infrared optical devices. The investigation into the waveguides' origin attributes the exceptionally high index change to material densification driven by the migration of specific elements, mainly barium, within the glass composition. These waveguides, characterized by low insertion losses, and highly customizable V-numbers evidenced by multimode operation at 3.5 um, offers substantial potential for chip laser technology and the creation of advanced optical devices for sensing and spectroscopy., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Large Language Models (LLMs) have emerged as promising solutions for a variety of medical and clinical decision support applications. However, LLMs are often subject to different types of biases, which can lead to unfair treatment of individuals, worsening health disparities, and reducing trust in AI-augmented medical tools. Aiming to address this important issue, in this study, we present a new model alignment approach for aligning LLMs using a preference optimization method within a knowledge distillation framework. Prior to presenting our proposed method, we first use an evaluation framework to conduct a comprehensive (largest to our knowledge) empirical evaluation to reveal the type and nature of existing biases in LLMs used for medical applications. We then offer a bias mitigation technique to reduce the unfair patterns in LLM outputs across different subgroups identified by the protected attributes. We show that our mitigation method is effective in significantly reducing observed biased patterns. Ultra diffuse galaxies, characterized by their low surface brightness and large physical size, constitute a subclass of dwarf galaxies that challenge our current understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. In this paper, we probe the properties of 74 UDGs, identified in the MATLAS survey, based on a comprehensive study of their globular cluster (GC) populations. We obtained high resolution HST imaging of these galaxies using the ACS F606W and F814W filters, allowing us to select GCs based on color and concentration index. After background subtraction and completeness correction, we calculate an overall total of 387 GCs. The number of GCs per galaxy ranges from 0 to 38, with the majority (64%) having low counts (0-2 GCs). On average, the more massive UDGs host a larger number of GCs. We find that our UDGs have specific frequencies (S_N) ranging from 0 to 91, with a small population (9%) with S_N > 30. The median S_N of our sample is similar to the one for the Perseus cluster UDGs, despite the fact that our UDGs are found in lower density environments. The S_N measurements for individual galaxies can extend beyond those found in Perseus, but remain below the values found for UDGs in the Virgo and Coma cluster. Based on a trending analysis of the S_N values with the host galaxy properties, we find trends with host galaxy size, roundness, color, and local density. For the UDGs with sufficiently high statistics, we study 2D density maps of the GC distributions, which show a variety of appearances: symmetric, asymmetric, off-center, and elongated. The UDGs with disturbed density maps also show disturbed stellar light morphologies. We further quantify the distribution by modeling it with a Sersic profile, finding R_{e,GC}/R_{e,gal} ~ 1.0, which indicates that the GCs follow the stellar light of the host galaxy., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

Among various aspects of ensuring the responsible design of AI tools for healthcare applications, addressing fairness concerns has been a key focus area. Specifically, given the wide spread of electronic health record (EHR) data and their huge potential to inform a wide range of clinical decision support tasks, improving fairness in this category of health AI tools is of key importance. While such a broad problem (mitigating fairness in EHR-based AI models) has been tackled using various methods, task- and model-agnostic methods are noticeably rare. In this study, we aimed to target this gap by presenting a new pipeline that generates synthetic EHR data, which is not only consistent with (faithful to) the real EHR data but also can reduce the fairness concerns (defined by the end-user) in the downstream tasks, when combined with the real data. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed pipeline across various downstream tasks and two different EHR datasets. Our proposed pipeline can add a widely applicable and complementary tool to the existing toolbox of methods to address fairness in health AI applications, such as those modifying the design of a downstream model. Extragalactic globular clusters (EGCs) are an abundant and powerful tracer of galaxy dynamics and formation, and their own formation and evolution is also a matter of extensive debate. The compact nature of globular clusters means that they are hard to spatially resolve and thus study outside the Local Group. In this work we have examined how well EGCs will be detectable in images from the Euclid telescope, using both simulated pre-launch images and the first early-release observations of the Fornax galaxy cluster. The Euclid Wide Survey will provide high-spatial resolution VIS imaging in the broad IE band as well as near-infrared photometry (YE, JE, and HE). We estimate that the galaxies within 100 Mpc in the footprint of the Euclid survey host around 830 000 EGCs of which about 350 000 are within the survey's detection limits. For about half of these EGCs, three infrared colours will be available as well. For any galaxy within 50Mpc the brighter half of its GC luminosity function will be detectable by the Euclid Wide Survey. The detectability of EGCs is mainly driven by the residual surface brightness of their host galaxy. We find that an automated machine-learning EGC-classification method based on real Euclid data of the Fornax galaxy cluster provides an efficient method to generate high purity and high completeness GC candidate catalogues. We confirm that EGCs are spatially resolved compared to pure point sources in VIS images of Fornax. Our analysis of both simulated and first on-sky data show that Euclid will increase the number of GCs accessible with high-resolution imaging substantially compared to previous surveys, and will permit the study of GCs in the outskirts of their hosts. We make use of the unprecedented depth, spatial resolution, and field of view of the Euclid Early Release Observations of the Perseus galaxy cluster to detect and characterise the dwarf galaxy population in this massive system. The Euclid high resolution VIS and combined VIS+NIR colour images were visually inspected and dwarf galaxy candidates were identified. Their morphologies, the presence of nuclei, and their globular cluster (GC) richness were visually assessed, complementing an automatic detection of the GC candidates. Structural and photometric parameters, including Euclid filter colours, were extracted from 2-dimensional fitting. Based on this analysis, a total of 1100 dwarf candidates were found across the image, with 638 appearing to be new identifications. The majority (96%) are classified as dwarf ellipticals, 53% are nucleated, 26% are GC-rich, and 6% show disturbed morphologies. A relatively high fraction of galaxies, 8%, are categorised as ultra-diffuse galaxies. The majority of the dwarfs follow the expected scaling relations. Globally, the GC specific frequency, S_N, of the Perseus dwarfs is intermediate between those measured in the Virgo and Coma clusters. While the dwarfs with the largest GC counts are found throughout the Euclid field of view, those located around the east-west strip, where most of the brightest cluster members are found, exhibit larger S_N values, on average. The spatial distribution of the dwarfs, GCs, and intracluster light show a main iso-density/isophotal centre displaced to the west of the bright galaxy light distribution. The Euclid ERO programme targeted the Perseus cluster of galaxies, gathering deep data in the central region of the cluster over 0.7 square degree, corresponding to approximately 0.25 r_200. The data set reaches a point-source depth of IE=28.0 (YE, JE, HE = 25.3) AB magnitudes at 5 sigma with a 0.16" and 0.48" FWHM, and a surface brightness limit of 30.1 (29.2) mag per square arcsec. The exceptional depth and spatial resolution of this wide-field multi-band data enable the simultaneous detection and characterisation of both bright and low surface brightness galaxies, along with their globular cluster systems, from the optical to the NIR. This study advances beyond previous analyses of the cluster and enables a range of scientific investigations summarised here. We derive the luminosity and stellar mass functions (LF and SMF) of the Perseus cluster in the Euclid IE band, thanks to supplementary u,g,r,i,z and Halpha data from the CFHT. We adopt a catalogue of 1100 dwarf galaxies, detailed in the corresponding ERO paper. We identify all other sources in the Euclid images and obtain accurate photometric measurements using AutoProf or AstroPhot for 138 bright cluster galaxies, and SourceExtractor for half a million compact sources. Cluster membership for the bright sample is determined by calculating photometric redshifts with Phosphoros. Our LF and SMF are the deepest recorded for the Perseus cluster, highlighting the groundbreaking capabilities of the Euclid telescope. Both the LF and SMF fit a Schechter plus Gaussian model. The LF features a dip at M(IE)=-19 and a faint-end slope of alpha_S = -1.2 to -1.3. The SMF displays a low-mass-end slope of alpha_S = -1.2 to -1.35. We present an analysis of Euclid observations of a 0.5 deg$^2$ field in the central region of the Fornax galaxy cluster that were acquired during the performance verification phase. With these data, we investigate the potential of Euclid for identifying GCs at 20 Mpc, and validate the search methods using artificial GCs and known GCs within the field from the literature. Our analysis of artificial GCs injected into the data shows that Euclid's data in $I_{\rm E}$ band is 80% complete at about $I_{\rm E} \sim 26.0$ mag ($M_{V\rm } \sim -5.0$ mag), and resolves GCs as small as $r_{\rm h} = 2.5$ pc. In the $I_{\rm E}$ band, we detect more than 95% of the known GCs from previous spectroscopic surveys and GC candidates of the ACS Fornax Cluster Survey, of which more than 80% are resolved. We identify more than 5000 new GC candidates within the field of view down to $I_{\rm E}$ mag, about 1.5 mag fainter than the typical GC luminosity function turn-over magnitude, and investigate their spatial distribution within the intracluster field. We then focus on the GC candidates around dwarf galaxies and investigate their numbers, stacked luminosity distribution and stacked radial distribution. While the overall GC properties are consistent with those in the literature, an interesting over-representation of relatively bright candidates is found within a small number of relatively GC-rich dwarf galaxies. The Euclid ERO showcase Euclid's capabilities in advance of its main mission, targeting 17 astronomical objects, from galaxy clusters, nearby galaxies, globular clusters, to star-forming regions. A total of 24 hours observing time was allocated in the early months of operation, engaging the scientific community through an early public data release. We describe the development of the ERO pipeline to create visually compelling images while simultaneously meeting the scientific demands within months of launch, leveraging a pragmatic, data-driven development strategy. The pipeline's key requirements are to preserve the image quality and to provide flux calibration and photometry for compact and extended sources. The pipeline's five pillars are: removal of instrumental signatures; astrometric calibration; photometric calibration; image stacking; and the production of science-ready catalogues for both the VIS and NISP instruments. We report a PSF with a full width at half maximum of 0.16" in the optical and 0.49" in the three NIR bands. Our VIS mean absolute flux calibration is accurate to about 1%, and 10% for NISP due to a limited calibration set; both instruments have considerable colour terms. The median depth is 25.3 and 23.2 AB mag with a SNR of 10 for galaxies, and 27.1 and 24.5 AB mag at an SNR of 5 for point sources for VIS and NISP, respectively. Euclid's ability to observe diffuse emission is exceptional due to its extended PSF nearly matching a pure diffraction halo, the best ever achieved by a wide-field, high-resolution imaging telescope. Euclid offers unparalleled capabilities for exploring the LSB Universe across all scales, also opening a new observational window in the NIR. The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. Large Language Models (LLMs) have emerged as powerful candidates to inform clinical decision-making processes. While these models play an increasingly prominent role in shaping the digital landscape, two growing concerns emerge in healthcare applications: 1) to what extent do LLMs exhibit social bias based on patients' protected attributes (like race), and 2) how do design choices (like architecture design and prompting strategies) influence the observed biases? To answer these questions rigorously, we evaluated eight popular LLMs across three question-answering (QA) datasets using clinical vignettes (patient descriptions) standardized for bias evaluations. We employ red-teaming strategies to analyze how demographics affect LLM outputs, comparing both general-purpose and clinically-trained models. Our extensive experiments reveal various disparities (some significant) across protected groups. We also observe several counter-intuitive patterns such as larger models not being necessarily less biased and fined-tuned models on medical data not being necessarily better than the general-purpose models. Furthermore, our study demonstrates the impact of prompt design on bias patterns and shows that specific phrasing can influence bias patterns and reflection-type approaches (like Chain of Thought) can reduce biased outcomes effectively. Consistent with prior studies, we call on additional evaluations, scrutiny, and enhancement of LLMs used in clinical decision support applications.

Variations with oxygen concentration of titanium lattice parameters are obtained by means of ab initio calculations, considering the impact of oxygen ordering. The quasiharmonic approximation is used to take into account the thermal expansion at finite temperature. Results show that lattice parameters depend mainly on oxygen concentration and, to a lesser extent, on the ordering state. Knowing these theoretical variations, one can get insights into the composition of ordered compounds existing in Ti-O binary alloys from their lattice mismatch measured experimentally by x-ray diffraction. The approach is used in a binary alloy containing 6000 ppm in weight of oxygen. It is concluded that the ordered compounds, which are observed after a recrystallization heat treatment, do not have the expected Ti6O stoichiometry but have a composition close to the nominal concentration. Oxygen ordering proceeds, therefore, before oxygen partitioning in titanium.

The 2nd generation VLTI instrument GRAVITY is a two-field infrared interferometer operating in the K band between 1.97 and 2.43 $\mu$m with either the four 8 m or the four 1.8 m telescopes of the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Beams collected by the telescopes are corrected with adaptive optics systems and the fringes are stabilized with a fringe-tracking system. A metrology system allows the measurement of internal path lengths in order to achieve high-accuracy astrometry. High sensitivity and high interferometric accuracy are achieved thanks to (i) correction of the turbulent phase, (ii) the use of low-noise detectors, and (iii) the optimization of photometric and coherence throughput. Beam combination and most of the beam transport are performed with single-mode waveguides in vacuum and at low temperature. In this paper, we present the functions and performance achieved with weakly birefringent standard single-mode fiber systems in GRAVITY. Fibered differential delay lines (FDDLs) are used to dynamically compensate for up to 6 mm of delay between the science and reference targets. Fibered polarization rotators allow us to align polarizations in the instrument and make the single-mode beam combiner close to polarization neutral. The single-mode fiber system exhibits very low birefringence (less than 23{\deg}), very low attenuation (3.6-7 dB/km across the K band), and optimized differential dispersion (less than 2.04 $\mu$rad cm2 at zero extension of the FDDLs). As a consequence, the typical fringe contrast losses due to the single-mode fibers are 6% to 10% in the lowest-resolution mode and 5% in the medium- and high-resolution modes of the instrument for a photometric throughput of the fiber chain of the order of 90%. We study framizations of algebras through the idea of Schur--Weyl duality. We provide a general setting in which framizations of algebras such as the Yokonuma--Hecke algebra naturally appear and we obtain this way a Schur--Weyl duality for many examples of these algebras which were introduced in the study of knots and links. We thereby provide an interpretation of these algebras from the point of view of representations of quantum groups. In this approach the usual braid groups is replaced by the framed braid groups. This gives a natural procedure to construct framizations of algebras and we discuss in particular a new framized version of the Birman--Murakami--Wenzl algebra. Document Visual Question Answering (DocVQA) has quickly grown into a central task of document understanding. But despite the fact that documents contain sensitive or copyrighted information, none of the current DocVQA methods offers strong privacy guarantees. In this work, we explore privacy in the domain of DocVQA for the first time, highlighting privacy issues in state of the art multi-modal LLM models used for DocVQA, and explore possible solutions. Specifically, we focus on invoice processing as a realistic document understanding scenario, and propose a large scale DocVQA dataset comprising invoice documents and associated questions and answers. We employ a federated learning scheme, that reflects the real-life distribution of documents in different businesses, and we explore the use case where the data of the invoice provider is the sensitive information to be protected. We demonstrate that non-private models tend to memorise, a behaviour that can lead to exposing private information. We then evaluate baseline training schemes employing federated learning and differential privacy in this multi-modal scenario, where the sensitive information might be exposed through either or both of the two input modalities: vision (document image) or language (OCR tokens). A photoelectron, emitted due to the absorption of light quanta as described by the photoelectric effect, is often characterized experimentally by a classical quantity, its momentum. However, since the photoelectron is a quantum object, its rigorous characterization requires the reconstruction of the complete quantum state, the photoelectron's density matrix. Here, we use quantum state tomography to fully characterize photoelectrons emitted from helium and argon atoms upon absorption of ultrashort, extreme ultraviolet light pulses. While in helium we measure a pure photoelectronic state, in argon, spin-orbit interaction induces entanglement between the ion and the photoelectron, leading to a reduced purity of the photoelectron state. Our work shows how state tomography gives new insights into the fundamental quantum aspects of light-induced electronic processes in matter, bridging the fields of photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum information, and offering new spectroscopic possibilities for quantum technology.

We study a compact nucleus embedded in an early-type dwarf galaxy, MATLAS-167, which is in the process of disruption by the tidal force of the neighboring giant S0 galaxy, NGC 936, in a group environment. Using the imaging data of the MATLAS survey, we analyze the stellar tidal tail of MATLAS-167 and its central compact nucleus, designated as NGC 936_UCD. We find that NGC 936_UCD has a luminosity of M$_{g}$ = $-$11.43$\pm$0.01 mag and a size of 66.5$\pm$17 pc, sharing the global properties of Ultra Compact Dwarf galaxies (UCDs) but significantly larger and brighter compared to the typical UCD populations observed in the Virgo cluster. By integrating the total luminosity of both the tidal stream and MATLAS-167, we estimate that the disrupted dwarf progenitor possesses a luminosity of M$_{g}$ = $-$15.92$\pm$0.06 mag, a typical bright dE luminosity. With the help of the optical spectrum observed by the SDSS survey, we derive the simple stellar population properties of NGC 936_UCD: a light-weighted age of 5.6$\pm$0.7 Gyr and metallicity of [Z/H] = $-$0.83$\pm$0.3 dex. We compute the matrix elements of $SO(3)$ in any finite-dimensional irreducible representation of $sl_3$. They are expressed in terms of a double sum of products of Krawtchouk and Racah polynomials which generalize the Griffiths-Krawtchouk polynomials. Their recurrence and difference relations are obtained as byproducts of our construction. The proof is based on the decomposition of a general three-dimensional rotation in terms of elementary planar rotations and a transition between two embeddings of $sl_2$ in $sl_3$. The former is related to monovariate Krawtchouk polynomials and the latter, to monovariate Racah polynomials. The appearance of Racah polynomials in this context is algebraically explained by showing that the two $sl_2$ Casimir elements related to the two embeddings of $sl_2$ in $sl_3$ obey the Racah algebra relations. We investigate the spatial characteristics of high-order harmonic radiation generated in argon, and observe cross-like patterns in the far field. An analytical model describing harmonics from an astigmatic driving beam reveals that these patterns result from the order and generation position dependent divergence of harmonics. Even small amounts of driving field astigmatism may result in cross-like patterns, coming from the superposition of individual harmonics with spatial profiles elongated in different directions. By correcting the aberrations using a deformable mirror, we show that fine-tuning the driving wavefront is essential for optimal spatial quality of the harmonics.

This paper gives an algebraic presentation of the fused Hecke algebra which describes the centraliser of tensor products of the $U_q(gl_N)$-representation labelled by a one-row partition of any size with vector representations. It is obtained through a detailed study of a new algebra that we call the symmetric one-boundary Hecke algebra. In particular, we prove that the symmetric one-boundary Hecke algebra is free over a ring of Laurent polynomials in three variables and we provide a basis indexed by a certain subset of signed permutations. We show how the symmetric one-boundary Hecke algebra admits the one-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra as a quotient, and we also describe a basis of this latter algebra combinatorially in terms of signed permutations with avoiding patterns. The quotients corresponding to any value of $N$ in $gl_N$ (the Temperley-Lieb one corresponds to $N=2$) are also introduced. Finally, we obtain the fused Hecke algebra, and in turn the centralisers for any value of $N$, by specialising and quotienting the symmetric one-boundary Hecke algebra. In particular, this generalises to the Hecke case the description of the so-called boundary seam algebra, which is then obtained (taking $N=2$) as a quotient of the fused Hecke algebra., Comment: 35 pages

For a Mach 4.5 flat-plate adiabatic boundary layer, we study the sensitivity of the first, second Mack modes and streaks to steady wall-normal blowing/suction and wall heat flux. The global instabilities are characterised in frequency space with resolvent gains and their gradients with respect to wall-boundary conditions are derived through a Lagrangian-based method. The implementation is performed in the open-source high-order finite-volume code BROADCAST and Algorithmic Differentiation is used to access the high-order state derivatives of the discretised governing equations. For the second Mack mode, the resolvent optimal gain decreases when suction is applied upstream of Fedorov's mode S/mode F synchronisation point leading to stabilisation and conversely when applied downstream. The largest suction gradient is in the region of branch I of mode S neutral curve. For heat flux control, strong heating at the leading edge stabilises both the first and second Mack modes, the former being more sensitive to wall-temperature control. Streaks are less sensitive to any boundary control in comparison with the Mack modes. Eventually, we show that an optimal actuator consisting of a single steady heating strip located close to the leading edge manages to damp all the instabilities together.

Developing AI tools that preserve fairness is of critical importance, specifically in high-stakes applications such as those in healthcare. However, health AI models' overall prediction performance is often prioritized over the possible biases such models could have. In this study, we show one possible approach to mitigate bias concerns by having healthcare institutions collaborate through a federated learning paradigm (FL; which is a popular choice in healthcare settings). While FL methods with an emphasis on fairness have been previously proposed, their underlying model and local implementation techniques, as well as their possible applications to the healthcare domain remain widely underinvestigated. Therefore, we propose a comprehensive FL approach with adversarial debiasing and a fair aggregation method, suitable to various fairness metrics, in the healthcare domain where electronic health records are used. Not only our approach explicitly mitigates bias as part of the optimization process, but an FL-based paradigm would also implicitly help with addressing data imbalance and increasing the data size, offering a practical solution for healthcare applications. We empirically demonstrate our method's superior performance on multiple experiments simulating large-scale real-world scenarios and compare it to several baselines. Dwarf galaxies have been extensively studied in the Local Group, in nearby groups, and selected clusters, giving us a robust picture of their global stellar and dynamical properties in particular locations in the Universe. Intense study of these properties has revealed correlations between them, including the well known universal stellar mass-metallicity relation. However, since dwarfs play a role in a vast range of different environments, much can be learned about galaxy formation and evolution through extending the study of these objects to various locations. We present MUSE spectroscopy of a sample of 56 dwarf galaxies as a follow-up to the MATLAS survey in low-to-moderate density environments beyond the Local Volume. The dwarfs have stellar masses in the range of $M_{*}/M_{\odot}$ = 10$^{6.1}$-10$^{9.4}$ and show a distance range of D = 14-148 Mpc, the majority (75%) of which are located in the range targeted by the MATLAS survey (10-45 Mpc). We thus report a 75% (79% for dwarf ellipticals) success rate for the semi-automatic identification of dwarf galaxies in the MATLAS survey on the here presented subsample. Using pPXF full spectrum fitting, we determine their line-of-sight velocity and can match the majority of them with their massive host galaxy. Close inspection of their spectra reveals that ~30% show clear emission lines and thus star formation activity. We estimate their stellar population properties (age and metallicity) and compare our results with other works investigating Local Volume and cluster dwarf galaxies. We find that the dwarf galaxies presented in this work show a systematic offset from the stellar mass-metallicity relation towards lower metallicities at the same stellar mass. We propose a new generalized compressible diphasic Navier-Stokes Cahn-Hilliard model that we name G-NSCH. This new G-NSCH model takes into account important properties of diphasic compressible fluids such as possible non-matching densities and contrast in mechanical properties (viscosity, friction) between the two phases of the fluid. the model also comprises a term to account for possible exchange of mass between the two phases. Our G-NSCH system is derived rigorously and satisfies basic mechanics of fluids and thermodynamics of particles. Under some simplifying assumptions, we prove the existence of global weak solutions. We also propose a structure preserving numerical scheme based on the scalar auxiliary variable method to simulate our system and present some numerical simulations validating the properties of the numerical scheme and illustrating the solutions of the G-NSCH model., Comment: 32 pages + appendix + bibliography

The massive use of digital documents due to the substantial trend of paperless initiatives confronted some companies to find ways to process thousands of documents per day automatically. To achieve this, they use automatic information retrieval (IR) allowing them to extract useful information from large datasets quickly. In order to have effective IR methods, it is first necessary to have an adequate dataset. Although companies have enough data to take into account their needs, there is also a need for a public database to compare contributions between state-of-the-art methods. Public data on the document exists as DocVQA[2] and XFUND [10], but these do not fully satisfy the needs of companies. XFUND contains only form documents while the company uses several types of documents (i.e. structured documents like forms but also semi-structured as invoices, and unstructured as emails). Compared to XFUND, DocVQA has several types of documents but only 4.5% of them are corporate documents (i.e. invoice, purchase order, etc). All of this 4.5% of documents do not meet the diversity of documents required by the company. We propose CHIC a visual question-answering public dataset. This dataset contains different types of corporate documents and the information extracted from these documents meet the right expectations of companies.

We prove an infinite family of identities satisfied by the Rankin-Cohen brackets involving the Racah polynomials. A natural interpretation in the representation theory of sl(2) is provided. From these identities and known properties of the Racah polynomials follows a short new proof of the associativity of the Eholzer product. This document is a thesis presented for the ``Habilitation \`a diriger des recherches''. The first chapter provides some background and sketch the story of the classical Schur-Weyl duality and its quantum analogue involving the Hecke algebra. Quantum groups and their centralisers are discussed along with their connections with the braid group, the Yang-Baxter equation and the construction of link invariants. A quick review of several related notions of Hecke algebras concludes the first chapter. The second chapter presents the fused Hecke algebras and an application to the construction of solutions for the Yang-Baxter equation. The third chapter summarises recent works on diagonal centralisers of Lie algebras, and gives an application to the study of the missing label for sl(3). We propose a definition by generators and relations of the rank $n-2$ Askey-Wilson algebra $\mathfrak{aw}(n)$ for any integer $n$, generalising the known presentation for the usual case $n=3$. The generators are indexed by connected subsets of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ and the simple and rather small set of defining relations is directly inspired from the known case of $n=3$. Our first main result is to prove the existence of automorphisms of $\mathfrak{aw}(n)$ satisfying the relations of the braid group on $n+1$ strands. We also show the existence of coproduct maps relating the algebras for different values of $n$. An immediate consequence of our approach is that the Askey-Wilson algebra defined here surjects onto the algebra generated by the intermediate Casimir elements in the $n$-fold tensor product of the quantum group ${\rm U}_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ or, equivalently, onto the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of the $(n+1)$-punctured sphere. We also obtain a family of central elements of the Askey-Wilson algebras which are shown, as a direct by-product of our construction, to be sent to $0$ in the realisation in the $n$-fold tensor product of ${\rm U}_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$, thereby producing a large number of relations for the algebra generated by the intermediate Casimir elements.

Attosecond photoelectron spectroscopy is often performed with interferometric experimental setups that require outstanding stability. We demonstrate and characterize in detail an actively stabilized, versatile, high spectral resolution attosecond beamline. The active-stabilization system can remain ultra-stable for several hours with an RMS stability of 13 as and a total pump-probe delay scanning range of \sim 400 fs. A tunable femtosecond laser source to drive high-order harmonic generation allows for precisely addressing atomic and molecular resonances. Furthermore, the interferometer includes a spectral shaper in 4f-geometry in the probe arm as well as a tunable bandpass filter in the pump arm, which offer additional high flexibility in terms of tunability as well as narrowband or polychromatic probe pulses. We show that spectral phase measurements of photoelectron wavepackets with the rainbow RABBIT technique (reconstruction of attosecond beating by two photon transitions) with narrowband probe pulses can significantly improve the photoelectron energy resolution. In this setup, the temporal-spectral resolution of photoelectron spectroscopy can reach a new level of accuracy and precision.

Bivariate P-polynomial association scheme of type $(\alpha,\beta)$ are defined as a generalization of the P-polynomial association schemes. This generalization is shown to be equivalent to a set of conditions on the intersection parameters. A number of known higher rank association schemes are seen to belong to this broad class. Bivariate Q-polynomial association schemes are similarly defined.

We study experimentally the dynamics of a water droplet on a tilted and vertically oscillating rigid fibre. As we vary the frequency and amplitude of the oscillations the droplet transitions between different modes: harmonic pumping, subharmonic pumping, a combination of rocking and pumping modes, and a combination of pumping and swinging modes. We characterise these responses and report how they affect the droplet's sliding speed along the fibre. Coral reef science is a fast-growing field propelled by the need to better understand coral health and resilience to devise strategies to slow reef loss resulting from environmental stresses. Key to coral resilience are the symbiotic interactions established within a complex holobiont, i.e. the multipartite assemblages comprising the host coral organism, endosymbiotic dinoflagellates, bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses. Tara Pacific is an ambitious project built upon the experience of previous Tara Oceans expeditions, and leveraging state-of-the-art sequencing technologies and analyses to dissect the biodiversity and biocomplexity of the coral holobiont screened across most archipelagos spread throughout the entire Pacific Ocean. Here we detail the Tara Pacific workflow for multi-omics data generation, from sample handling to nucleotide sequence data generation and deposition. This unique multidimensional framework also includes a large amount of concomitant metadata collected side-by-side that provide new assessments of coral reef biodiversity including micro-biodiversity and shape future investigations of coral reef dynamics and their fate in the Anthropocene.

We introduce an inhomogeneous model of free fermions on a $(D-1)$-dimensional lattice with $D(D-1)/2$ continuous parameters that control the hopping strength between adjacent sites. We solve this model exactly, and find that the eigenfunctions are given by multidimensional generalizations of Krawtchouk polynomials. We construct a Heun operator that commutes with the chopped correlation matrix, and compute the entanglement entropy numerically for $D=2,3,4$, for a wide range of parameters. For $D=2$, we observe oscillations in the sub-leading contribution to the entanglement entropy, for which we conjecture an exact expression. The evolution of any complex dynamical system is described by its state derivative operators. However, the extraction of the exact N-order state derivative operators is often inaccurate and requires approximations. The open-source CFD code called BROADCAST discretises the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and then extracts the linearised Nderivative operators through Algorithmic Differentiation (AD) providing a toolbox for laminar flow dynamic analyses. Furthermore, the gradients through adjoint derivation are extracted either by transposition of the linearised operator or through the backward mode of the AD tool. The software includes base-flow computation and linear global stability analysis via eigen-decomposition of the linearised operator or via singular value decomposition of the resolvent operator. Sensitivity tools as well as weakly nonlinear analysis complete the package. The numerical method for the spatial discretisation of the equations consists of a finite-difference high-order shock-capturing scheme applied within a finite volume framework on 2D curvilinear structured grids. The stability and sensitivity tools are demonstrated on two cases: a cylinder flow at low Mach number and a hypersonic boundary layer.

An increasing amount of research is being devoted to applying machine learning methods to electronic health record (EHR) data for various clinical purposes. This growing area of research has exposed the challenges of the accessibility of EHRs. MIMIC is a popular, public, and free EHR dataset in a raw format that has been used in numerous studies. The absence of standardized pre-processing steps can be, however, a significant barrier to the wider adoption of this rare resource. Additionally, this absence can reduce the reproducibility of the developed tools and limit the ability to compare the results among similar studies. In this work, we provide a greatly customizable pipeline to extract, clean, and pre-process the data available in the fourth version of the MIMIC dataset (MIMIC-IV). The pipeline also presents an end-to-end wizard-like package supporting predictive model creations and evaluations. The pipeline covers a range of clinical prediction tasks which can be broadly classified into four categories - readmission, length of stay, mortality, and phenotype prediction. Ocean surface monitoring, especially oil slick detection, has become mandatory due to its importance for oil exploration and risk prevention on ecosystems. For years, the detection task has been performed manually by photo-interpreters using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images with the help of contextual data such as wind. This tedious manual work cannot handle the increasing amount of data collected by the available sensors and thus requires automation. Literature reports conventional and semi-automated detection methods that generally focus either on oil slicks originating from anthropogenic (spills) or natural (seeps) sources on limited data collections. As an extension, this paper presents the automation of offshore oil slicks on an extensive database with both kinds of slicks. It builds upon the slick annotations of specialized photo-interpreters on Sentinel-1 SAR data for 4 years over 3 exploration and monitoring areas worldwide. All the considered SAR images and related annotation relate to real oil slick monitoring scenarios. Further, wind estimation is systematically computed to enrich the data collection. Paper contributions are the following : (i) a performance comparison of two deep learning approaches: semantic segmentation using FC-DenseNet and instance segmentation using Mask-RCNN. (ii) the introduction of meteorological information (wind speed) is deemed valuable for oil slick detection in the performance evaluation. The main results of this study show the effectiveness of slick detection by deep learning approaches, in particular FC-DenseNet, which captures more than 92% of oil instances in our test set. Furthermore, a strong correlation between model performances and contextual information such as slick size and wind speed is demonstrated in the performance evaluation. These are the extended notes of a mini-course given at the school WinterBraids X. We discuss algebras simultaneously related to: the braid group, the Yang-Baxter equation and the representation theory of quantum groups. The main goal is to explain the idea of the fusion procedure for the Yang-Baxter equation and to show how it leads to new examples of such algebras: the fused Hecke algebras.

Zirconium fluoride (ZBLAN) glass, the standard material used in fiber-based mid-infrared photonics, has been re-designed to enable the fabrication of high index-contrast low-loss waveguides via femtosecond laser direct writing. We demonstrate that in contrast to pure ZBLAN, a positive index change of close to 10$^{-2}$ can be induced in hybrid zirconium/hafnium (Z/HBLAN) glasses during ultrafast laser inscription and show that this can be explained by an electron cloud distortion effect that is driven by the existence of two glass formers with contrasting polarizability. High numerical aperture (NA) type-I waveguides that support a well confined 3.1 $\mu$m wavelength mode with a mode-field diameter (MFD) as small as 12 $\mu$m have successfully been fabricated. These findings open the door for the fabrication of mid-infrared integrated photonic devices that can readily be pigtailed to existing ZBLAN fibers.

Objective: Data clustering is a common exploration step in the omics era, notably in genomics and proteomics where many genes or proteins can bequantified from one or more experiments. Bayesian clustering is a powerful algorithm that can classify several thousands of genes or proteins. AutoClass C, its original implementation, handles missing data, automatically determines the best number of clusters but is not user-friendly.Results: We developed an online tool called AutoClassWeb, which provides an easy-to-use web interface for Bayesian clustering with AutoClass. Input data are entered as TSV files. Results are provided in formats that ease further analyses with spreadsheet programs or with programming languages, such as Python or R. AutoClassWeb is implemented in Python and is published under the 3-Clauses BSD license. The source code is available athttps://github.com/pierrepo/autoclassweb along with a detailed documentation.

Increasing interest in the acquisition of biotic and abiotic resources from within the deep sea (e.g. fisheries, oil-gas extraction, and mining) urgently imposes the development of novel monitoring technologies, beyond the traditional vessel-assisted, time-consuming, high-cost sampling surveys. The implementation of permanent networks of seabed and water-column cabled (fixed) and docked mobile platforms is presently enforced, to cooperatively measure biological features and environmental (physico-chemical) parameters. Video and acoustic (i.e. optoacoustic) imaging are becoming central approaches for studying benthic fauna (e.g. quantifying species presence, behaviour, and trophic interactions) in a remote, continuous, and prolonged fashion. Imaging is also being complemented by in situ environmental-DNA sequencing technologies, allowing the traceability of a wide range of organisms (including prokaryotes) beyond the reach of optoacoustic tools. Organic aerosol (OA) is a key component to total submicron particulate matter (PM1), and comprehensive knowledge of OA sources across Europe is crucial to mitigate PM1 levels. Europe has a well-established air quality research infrastructure from which yearlong datasets using 21 aerosol chemical speciation monitors (ACSMs) and 1 aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) were gathered during 2013-2019. It includes 9 non-urban and 13 urban sites. This study developed a state-of-the-art source apportionment protocol to analyse long-term OA mass spectrum data by applying the most advanced source apportionment strategies (i.e., rolling PMF, ME-2, and bootstrap). This harmonised protocol enables the quantifications of the most common OA components such as hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA), biomass burning OA (BBOA), cooking-like OA (COA), more oxidised-oxygenated OA (MO-OOA), and less oxidised-oxygenated OA (LO-OOA). Other components such as coal combustion OA (CCOA), solid fuel OA (SFOA: mainly mixture of coal and peat combustion), cigarette smoke OA (CSOA), sea salt (mostly inorganic but part of the OA mass spectrum), coffee OA, and ship industry OA could also be separated at a few specific sites. Oxygenated OA (OOA) components make up most of the submicron OA mass (average = 71.1%, a range of 43.7-100%). Solid fuel combustion-related OA components (i.e., BBOA, CCOA, and SFOA) are still considerable with in total 16.0% yearly contribution to the OA, yet mainly during winter months (21.4%). Overall, this comprehensive protocol works effectively across all sites governed by different sources and generates robust and consistent source apportionment results. Our work presents a comprehensive overview of OA sources in Europe with a unique combination of high time resolution and long-term data coverage (9-36 months), providing essential information to improve/validate air quality, health impact, and climate models.

The Keller-Segel model is a well-known system representing chemotaxis in living organisms. We study the convergence of a generalized nonlinear variant of the Keller-Segel to the degenerate Cahn-Hilliard system. This analysis is made possible from the observation that the Keller-Segel system is equivalent to a relaxed version of the Cahn-Hilliard system. Furthermore, this latter equivalent system has an interesting application in the modelling of living tissues. Indeed, compressible and incompressible porous medium type equations are widely used to describe the mechanical properties of living tissues. The relaxed degenerate Cahn-Hilliard system, can be viewed as a compressible living tissue model for which the movement is driven by Darcy's law and takes into account the effects of the viscosity as well as surface tension at the surface of the tissue. We study the convergence of the Keller-Segel system to the Cahn-Hilliard equation and some of the analytical properties of the model such as the incompressible limit of our model. Our analysis relies on a priori estimates, compactness properties, and on the equivalence between the Keller-Segel system and the relaxed degenerate Cahn-Hilliard system.
