Search

Powerful relativistic jets are one of the ubiquitous features of accreting black holes in all scales. GRS 1915+105 is a well-known fast-spinning black-hole X-ray binary with a relativistic jet, termed as a ``microquasar'', as indicated by its superluminal motion of radio emission. It exhibits persistent x-ray activity over the last 30 years, with quasi-periodic oscillations of $\sim 1-10$ Hz and 34 and 67 Hz in the x-ray band. These oscillations likely originate in the inner accretion disk, but other origins have been considered. Radio observations found variable light curves with quasi-periodic flares or oscillations with periods of $\sim 20-50$ minutes. Here we report two instances of $\sim$5 Hz transient periodic oscillation features from the source detected in the 1.05-1.45 GHz radio band that occurred in January 2021 and June 2022, respectively. We analyze a Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observation of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 during a transition from type-C to type-B quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs). We find that below ~2 keV, for the type-B QPOs the rms amplitude is lower and the magnitude of the phase lags is larger than for the type-C QPOs. Above that energy, the rms and phase-lag spectra of the type-B and type-C QPOs are consistent with being the same. We perform a joint fit of the time-averaged spectra of the source, and the rms and phase-lag spectra of the QPOs with the time-dependent Comptonization model vkompth to study the geometry of the corona during the transition. We find that the data can be well-fitted with a model consisting of a small and a large corona that are physically connected. The sizes of the small and large coronae increase gradually during the type-C QPO phase whereas they decrease abruptly at the transition to type-B QPO. At the same time, the inner radius of the disc moves inward at the QPO transition. Combined with simultaneous radio observations showing that discrete jet ejections happen around the time of the QPO transition, we propose that a corona that expands horizontally during the type-C QPO phase, from ~10^{4} km (~800 Rg) to ~10^{5} km (~8000 Rg) overlying the accretion disc, transforms into a vertical jet-like corona extending over ~10^{4} km (~800 Rg) during the type-B QPO phase., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We have performed a spectral-timing analysis on the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1535--571 during its 2017 outburst, with the aim of exploring the evolution of the inner accretion flow geometry. X-ray reverberation lags are observed in the hard-intermediate state (HIMS) and soft-intermediate state (SIMS) of the outburst. During the HIMS, the characteristic frequency of the reverberation lags $\nu_0$ (the frequency at which the soft lag turns to zero in the lag-frequency spectra) increases when the spectrum softens. This reflects a reduction of the spatial distance between the corona and accretion disc, when assuming the measured time lags are associated with the light travel time. We also find a strong correlation between $\nu_0$ and type-C Quasi Periodic Oscillation (QPO) centroid frequency $\nu_{QPO}$, which can be well explained by the Lense-Thirring (L-T) precession model under a truncated disk geometry. Despite the degeneracy in the spectral modellings, our results suggest that the accretion disc is largely truncated in the low hard state (LHS), and moves inward as the spectrum softens. Combine the spectral modelling results with the $\nu_0$ - $\nu_{QPO}$ evolution, we are inclined to believe that this source probably have a truncated disk geometry in the hard state.

We analyzed two observations of the low-mass black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1348-630 from Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) during low hard state and hard intermediate state in the 2019 outburst. The reflection components are found in the X-ray spectra, and the spectral fittings give an inclination angle of $\sim 25^\circ-35^\circ$ for the binary system, and there is an absorption line around $\sim 7$ keV coming from highly ionized iron. The photoionization code XSTAR is used to fit the absorption line, which is attributed to outflows with a velocity of $\sim 10^{4}\rm km\ s^{-1}$ along our line of sight and the column density reaching $10^{23}\rm cm^{-2}$ in low hard and hard intermediate states. The physical mechanism launching fast disk winds from the black hole accretion system is still uncertain. MAXI J1348-630 is a low-mass X-ray black hole binary located in the Galaxy and undergone the X-ray outburst in 2019. We analyzed the observation data in very soft state during the outburst between MJD 58588 and MJD 58596 based on the Insight-HXMT observations from 2 -- 20 keV via the continuum fitting method to measure the spin of the stellar-mass black hole in MAXI J1348-630. The inner disk temperature and the apparent inner disk radius were found to be $0.47\pm 0.01 \rm keV$ and $5.33\pm 0.10 \ R_{g}$ from the observation data modeled by the multicolor disc blackbody model. Assuming the distance of the source $D\sim 3.4 \rm kpc$, the mass of the black hole $M\sim 11 \ M_{\odot}$, and the inclination of the system $i\sim 29.2^{\circ}$, the spin is determined to be $a_{\star}=0.41\pm 0.03$ for fixing hardening factor at 1.6 and $n_{H}=8.6\times 10^{21} \rm cm^{-2}$. Besides, considering the uncertainty of the parameters $D, M, i$ of this system, with the Monte Carlo analysis, we still confirm the moderate spin of the black hole as $a_{\star}=0.42^{+0.13}_{-0.50}$. The first X-ray source catalog of Insight-HXMT Galactic Plane (|b|<10deg) Scanning Survey (GPSS) is presented based on the data accumulated from June 2017 to August 2021. The 4 yr limit sensitivities at main energy bands can reach 8.2x10^(-12) erg/s/cm^2} (2-6 keV), 4.21x10^(-11) erg/s/cm^2 (7-40 keV) and 2.78x10^(-11) erg/s/cm^2 (25-100 keV). More than 1300 sources have been monitored at a wide band (1$-$100\,keV), of which 223 sources have a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 5. We combined the GPSS data of Insight-HXMT and MAXI and found it is feasible to obtain more complete long-term light curves from their scanning results. The flux variabilities at different energy bands of the 223 bright sources are analyzed based on the excess variances. It is found that the fluxes of X-ray binaries are more active than those of supernova remnants and isolated pulsars. Different types of binaries, e.g., low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), neutron star binaries, and black hole binaries, also distinctively show different regularities. In addition, the relations between the hardness ratio (HR) and excess variances, and HR and source types are analyzed. It is obvious that the HRs of HMXBs tend to be harder than those of LMXBs and HMXBs tend to be more active than those of LMXBs., Comment: 43 pages, 26 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS

Here we report the spectral-timing results of the black hole X-ray binary 4U 1630-47 during its 2021 outburst using observations from the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in 1.6--4.2 Hz and quasi-regular modulation (QRM) near 60 mHz are detected during the outburst. The mHz QRM has a fractional rms of 10%--16% in the 8--35 keV energy band with a Q factor (frequency/width) of 2--4. Benefiting from the broad energy band of hxmt, we study the energy dependence of the 60 mHz QRM in 1--100 keV for the first time. We find that the fractional rms of the mHz QRM increases with photon energy, while the time lags of the mHz QRM are soft and decrease with photon energy. Fast recurrence of the mHz QRM, in a timescale of less than one hour, has been observed during the outburst. During this period, the corresponding energy spectra moderately change when the source transitions from the QRM state to the non-QRM state. The QRM phenomena also shows a dependence with the accretion rate. We suggest that the QRM could be caused by an unknown accretion instability aroused from the corona.

The origin(s) and mechanism(s) of fast radio bursts (FRBs), which are short radio pulses from cosmological distances, have remained a major puzzle since their discovery. We report a strong Quasi-Periodic Oscillation(QPO) of 40 Hz in the X-ray burst from the magnetar SGR J1935+2154 and associated with FRB 200428, significantly detected with the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) and also hinted by the Konus-Wind data. QPOs from magnetar bursts have only been rarely detected; our 3.4 sigma (p-value is 2.9e-4) detection of the QPO reported here reveals the strongest QPO signal observed from magnetars (except in some very rare giant flares), making this X-ray burst unique among magnetar bursts. The two X-ray spikes coinciding with the two FRB pulses are also among the peaks of the QPO. Our results suggest that at least some FRBs are related to strong oscillation processes of neutron stars. A black hole X-ray binary produces hard X-ray radiation from its corona and disk when the accreting matter heats up. During an outburst, the disk and corona co-evolves with each other. However, such an evolution is still unclear in both its geometry and dynamics. Here we report the unusual decrease of the reflection fraction in MAXI J1820+070, which is the ratio of the coronal intensity illuminating the disk to the coronal intensity reaching the observer, as the corona is observed to contrast during the decay phase. We postulate a jet-like corona model, in which the corona can be understood as a standing shock where the material flowing through. In this dynamical scenario, the decrease of the reflection fraction is a signature of the corona's bulk velocity. We present the observational results from a detailed timing analysis of the black hole candidate EXO 1846-031 during its outburst in 2019 with the observations of Insight-HXMT, NICER and MAXI. This outburst can be classfied roughly into four different states. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed by NICER (about 0.1-6Hz) and Insight-HXMT (about 0.7-8Hz) are also reported in this work. Meanwhile, we study various physical quantities related to QPO frequency.The QPO rms-frequency relationship in three energy band 1-10 keV indicates that there is a turning pointing in frequency around 2 Hz,which is similar to that of GRS 1915+105. A possible hypothesis for the relationship above may be related to the inclination of the source, which may require a high inclination to explain it. The relationships between QPO frequency and QPO rms,hardness,total fractional rms and count rate have also been found in other transient sources, which can indicate that the origin of type-C QPOs is non-thermal.

Low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) are commonly found in black hole X-ray binaries, and their origin is still under debate. The properties of LFQPOs at high energies (above 30 keV) are closely related to the nature of the accretion flow in the innermost regions, and thus play a crucial role in critically testing various theoretical models. The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) is capable of detecting emissions above 30 keV, and is therefore an ideal instrument to do so. Here we report the discovery of LFQPOs above 200 keV in the new black hole MAXI J1820+070 in the X-ray hard state, which allows us to understand the behaviours of LFQPOs at hundreds of kiloelectronvolts. The phase lag of the LFQPO is constant around zero below 30 keV, and becomes a soft lag (that is, the high-energy photons arrive first) above 30 keV. The soft lag gradually increases with energy and reaches ~0.9s in the 150-200 keV band. The detection at energies above 200 keV, the large soft lag and the energy-related behaviors of the LFQPO pose a great challenge for most currently existing models, but suggest that the LFQPO probably originates from the precession of a small-scale jet., Comment: 36 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables; published in Nature Astronomy

The Galactic plane scanning survey is one of the main scientific objectives of the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (known as Insight-HXMT). During the two-year operation of Insight-HXMT, more than 1000 scanning observations have been performed and the whole Galactic plane ($\rm 0^{\circ}

We make the in-orbit calibration to the point-spread functions (PSFs) of the collimators of the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope with the scanning observation of the Crab. We construct the empirical adjustments to the theoretically calculated geometrical PSFs. The adjustments contain two parts: a rotating matrix to adjust the directional deviation of the collimators and a paraboloidal function to correct the inhomogeneity of the real PSFs. The parameters of the adjusting matrices and paraboloidal functions are determined by fitting the scanning data with lower scanning speed and smaller intervals during the calibration observations. After the PSF calibration, the systematic errors in source localization in the Galactic plane scanning survey are 0.010 deg, 0.015 deg, 0.113 deg for the Low-Energy Telescope (LE), the Medium-Energy telescope (ME) and the High-Energy telescope (HE), respectively; meanwhile, the systematic errors in source flux estimation are 1.8%, 1.6%, 2.7% for LE, ME and HE, respectively., Comment: 15 pages, 27 figures, accepted for publication in JHEAP

As China's first X-ray astronomical satellite, the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT), which was dubbed as Insight-HXMT after the launch on June 15, 2017, is a wide-band (1-250 keV) slat-collimator-based X-ray astronomy satellite with the capability of all-sky monitoring in 0.2-3 MeV. It was designed to perform pointing, scanning and gamma-ray burst (GRB) observations and, based on the Direct Demodulation Method (DDM), the image of the scanned sky region can be reconstructed. The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) named Insight is China's first X-ray astronomical satellite. The Low Energy X-ray Telescope (LE) is one of its main payloads onboard. The detectors of LE adopt swept charge device CCD236 with L-shaped transfer electrodes. Charges in detection area are read out continuously along specific paths, which leads to a time response distribution of photons readout time. We designed a long exposure readout mode to measure the time response distribution. In this mode, CCD236 firstly performs exposure without readout, then all charges generated in preceding exposure phase are read out completely. Through analysis of the photons readout time in this mode, we obtained the probability distribution of photons readout time.

The recently discovered neutron star transient Swift J0243.6+6124 has been monitored by {\it the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope} ({\it Insight-\rm HXMT). Based on the obtained data, we investigate the broadband spectrum of the source throughout the outburst. We estimate the broadband flux of the source and search for possible cyclotron line in the broadband spectrum. No evidence of line-like features is, however, found up to $\rm 150~keV$. In the absence of any cyclotron line in its energy spectrum, we estimate the magnetic field of the source based on the observed spin evolution of the neutron star by applying two accretion torque models. In both cases, we get consistent results with $B\rm \sim 10^{13}~G$, $D\rm \sim 6~kpc$ and peak luminosity of $\rm >10^{39}~erg~s^{-1}$ which makes the source the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray source hosting a neutron star., Comment: published

Finding the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart of binary compact star merger, especially the binary neutron star (BNS) merger, is critically important for gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, cosmology and fundamental physics. On Aug. 17, 2017, Advanced LIGO and \textit{Fermi}/GBM independently triggered the first BNS merger, GW170817, and its high energy EM counterpart, GRB 170817A, respectively, resulting in a global observation campaign covering gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio as well as neutrinos. The High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard \textit{Insight}-HXMT (Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope) is the unique high-energy gamma-ray telescope that monitored the entire GW localization area and especially the optical counterpart (SSS17a/AT2017gfo) with very large collection area ($\sim$1000 cm$^2$) and microsecond time resolution in 0.2-5 MeV. In addition, \textit{Insight}-HXMT quickly implemented a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation to scan the GW localization area for potential X-ray emission from the GW source. Although it did not detect any significant high energy (0.2-5 MeV) radiation from GW170817, its observation helped to confirm the unexpected weak and soft nature of GRB 170817A. Meanwhile, \textit{Insight}-HXMT/HE provides one of the most stringent constraints (~10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-6}$ erg/cm$^2$/s) for both GRB170817A and any other possible precursor or extended emissions in 0.2-5 MeV, which help us to better understand the properties of EM radiation from this BNS merger. We present a theoretical study of degradation mechanisms for photoinduced oxidation in organic polymers in the condensed phase, using poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT) as an example. Applying density functional theory with a hybrid density functional and periodic boundary conditions that account for steric effects and permit the modeling of interchain chemical reactions, we investigate reaction pathways that may lead to the oxidation of thiophene backbone as a critical step toward disrupting the polymer conjugation. We calculate energy barriers for reactions of the P3HT backbone with oxidizing agents including hydroxyl radical (OH$\cdot$), hydroperoxide (ROOH), and peroxyl radical (ROO$\cdot$), following a UV-driven radical reaction starting at the $\alpha$-carbon of the alkyl side chain as suggested by infrared (IR) and X-ray photoemission (XPS) spectrosocopy studies. The results strongly suggest that an attack of OH$\cdot$ on sulfur in P3HT is unlikely to be thermodynamically favored. On the other hand, an attack of a peroxyl radical on the side chain on the P3HT backbone may provide low barrier reaction pathways to photodegradation of P3HT and other polymers with side chains. Fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) shows promise as an electrolyte additive for improving passivating solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) films on silicon anodes used in lithium ion batteries (LIB). We apply density functional theory (DFT), ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD), and quantum chemistry techniques to examine excess-electron-induced FEC molecular decomposition mechanisms that lead to FEC-modified SEI. We consider one- and two-electron reactions using cluster models and explicit interfaces between liquid electrolyte and model Li(x)Si(y) surfaces, respectively. FEC is found to exhibit more varied reaction pathways than unsubstituted ethylene carbonate. The initial bond-breaking events and products of one- and two-electron reactions are qualitatively similar, with a fluoride ion detached in both cases. However, most one-electron products are charge-neutral, not anionic, and may not coalesce to form effective Li+-conducting SEI unless they are further reduced or take part in other reactions. Interface dipole determines the electronic energy alignment in donor/acceptor interfaces and plays an important role in organic photovoltaics. Here we present a study combining first principles density functional theory (DFT) with ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) to investigate the interface dipole, energy level alignment, and structural properties at the interface between CuPc and C60. DFT finds a sizable interface dipole for the face-on orientation, in quantitative agreement with the UPS measurement, and rules out charge transfer as the origin of the interface dipole. Using TOF-SIMS we show that the interfacial morphology for the bilayer CuPc/C60 film is characterized by molecular intermixing, containing both the face-on and the edge-on orientation. The complementary experimental and theoretical results provide both insight into the origin of the interface dipole and direct evidence for the effect of interfacial morphology on the interface dipole., Comment: 4 figures

We propose a new substitutional impurity complex in diamond composed of a lithium atom that is tetrahedrally coordinated by four nitrogen atoms (LiN_4). Density functional calculations are consistent with the hydrogenic impurity model, both supporting the prediction that this complex is a shallow donor with an activation energy of 0.27 +/- 0.06 eV. We use first-principles computational methods to examine hole trapping in organic molecular crystals. We present a computational scheme based on the tuning of the fraction of exact exchange in hybrid density functional theory to eliminate the many-electron self-interaction error. With small organic molecules, we show that this scheme gives accurate descriptions of ionization and dimer dissociation. We demonstrate that the excess hole in perfect molecular crystals form self-trapped molecular polarons. The predicted absolute ionization potentials of both localized and delocalized holes are consistent with experimental values., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Organic/inorganic donor-acceptor interfaces are gaining growing attention in organic photovoltaic applications as each component of the interface offers unique attributes. Here we use hybrid-density functional theory to examine the electronic structure of sexithiophene/ZnO interfaces. We find that interfacial molecular orientations strongly influence the adsorption energy, the energy level alignment, and the open circuit voltage. We attribute the orientation dependence to the varied strength of electronic coupling between the molecule and the substrate. Our study suggests that photovoltaic performance can be optimized by controlling the interfacial design of molecular orientations., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We apply first principles computational techniques to analyze the two-electron, multi-step, electrochemical reduction of CO2 to CO in water using cobalt porphyrin as a catalyst. Density Functional Theory calculations with hybrid functionals and dielectric continuum solvation are used to determine the steps at which electrons are added. This information is corroborated with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations in an explicit aqueous environment which reveal the critical role of water in stabilizing a key intermediate formed by CO2 bound to cobalt. Using potential of mean force calculations, the intermediate is found to spontaneously accept a proton to form a carboxylate acid group at pH<9.0, and the subsequent cleavage of a C-OH bond to form CO is exothermic and associated with a small free energy barrier. These predictions suggest that the proposed reaction mechanism is viable if electron transfer to the catalyst is sufficiently fast. The variation in cobalt ion charge and spin states during bond breaking, DFT+U treatment of cobalt 3d orbitals, and the need for computing electrochemical potentials are emphasized., Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures

Using first-principles density functional theory, we investigate the interfacial magnetoelectric coupling in a tri-component superlattice composed of a ferromagnetic metal (FM), ferroelectric (FE), and normal metal (NM). Using Fe/FE/Pt as a model system, we show that a net and cumulative interfacial magnetization is induced in the FM metal near the FM/FE interface. A carefully analysis of the magnetic moments in Fe reveals that the interfacial magnetization is a consequence of a complex interplay of interfacial charge transfer, chemical bonding, and spin dependent electrostatic screening. The last effect is linear in the FE polarization, is switchable upon its reversal, and yields a substantial interfacial magnetoelectric coupling., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

Ferromagnet-ferroelectric-metal superlattices are proposed to realize the large room-temperature magnetoelectric effect. Spin dependent electron screening is the fundamental mechanism at the microscopic level. We also predict an electric control of magnetization in this structure. The naturally broken inversion symmetry in our tri-component structure introduces a magnetoelectric coupling energy of $P M^2$. Such a magnetoelectric coupling effect is general in ferromagnet-ferroelectric heterostructures, independent of particular chemical or physical bonding, and will play an important role in the field of multiferroics., Comment: 5 pages including 3 figures and 1 table

We study the ferroelectric stability and surface structural properties of an oxygen-terminated hexagonal YMnO$_3$ ultra-thin film using density functional theory. Under an open circuit boundary condition, the ferroelectric state with the spontaneous polarization normal to the (0001) surface, is found to be metastable in a single domain state despite the presence of a depolarizing field. We establish a connection between the result and the role of improper ferroelectric transition. Our results imply that improper ferroelectric ultrathin films can have rather unique properties that are distinctive from those of very thin films of ordinary ferroelectrics., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We report first-principles GW-Bethe Salpeter Equation and Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the optical and electronic properties of molecular and crystalline rubrene (C$_{42}$H$_{28}$). Many-body effects dominate the optical spectrum and quasi-particle gap of molecular crystals. We interpret the observed yellow-green photoluminescence in rubrene microcrystals as a result of the formation of intermolecular, charge-transfer spin-singlet excitons. In contrast, spin-triplet excitons are localized and intramolecular with a predicted phosphorescence at the red end of the optical spectrum. We find that the exchange energy plays a fundamental role in raising the energy of intramolecular spin-singlet excitons above the intermolecular ones. Exciton binding energies are predicted to be around 0.5 eV (spin singlet) to 1 eV (spin triplet). The calculated electronic gap is 2.8 eV. We report on the structural and electronic properties of the interface between the multiferoic oxide YMnO$_3$ and wide band-gap semiconductor GaN studied with the Hubbard-corrected local spin density approximation (LSDA+U) to density-functional theory (DFT). We find that the band offsets at the interface between antiferromagnetically ordered YMnO$_3$ and GaN are different for spin-up and spin-down states. This behavior is due to the spin splitting of the valence band induced by the interface. The energy barrier depends on the relative orientation of the electric polarization with respect to the polarization direction of the GaN substrate suggesting an opportunity to create magnetic tunnel junctions in this materials system., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We show that the results in their comment should not be taken as an indication that the viscosity corrections to the conductance of real nanoscale structures are small. So far transport properties of nanoscale contacts have been mostly studied within the static scattering approach. The electron dynamics and the transient behavior of current flow, however, remain poorly understood. We present a numerical study of microscopic current flow dynamics in nanoscale quantum point contacts. We employ an approach that combines a microcanonical picture of transport with time-dependent density-functional theory. We carry out atomic and jellium model calculations to show that the time evolution of the current flow exhibits several noteworthy features, such as nonlaminarity and edge flow. We attribute these features to the interaction of the electron fluid with the ionic lattice, to the existence of pressure gradients in the fluid, and to the transient dynamical formation of surface charges at the nanocontact-electrode interfaces. The electron current density in nanoscale junctions is typically several orders of magnitude larger than the corresponding one in bulk electrodes. Consequently, the electron-electron scattering rate increases substantially in the junction. This leads to local electron heating of the underlying Fermi sea in analogy to the local ionic heating that is due to the increased electron-phonon scattering rates. We predict the bias dependence of local electron heating in quasi-ballistic nanoscale conductors, its effect on ionic heating, and discuss possible experimental tests of our results., Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure, Latex

We examine the application of short-circuit electrical boundary conditions in density functional theory calculations of ferroelectric thin films. Modeling PbTiO$_3$ films with Pt electrodes, we demonstrate that under periodic boundary conditions of supercells, short-circuit conditions for the electrodes are equivalently satisfied in two repeated slab geometries: a PbTiO$_3$/metal superlattice geometry and a periodic metal/PbTiO$_3$/metal/vacuum geometry, where the metal is Pt or SrRuO$_3$. We report studies of ferroelectricity in ultra-thin perovskite films with realistic electrodes. The results reveal stable ferroelectric states in thin films less than 10 \AA thick with polarization normal to the surface. Under short-circuit boundary conditions, the screening effect of realistic electrodes and the influence of real metal/oxide interfaces on thin film polarization are investigated. Our studies indicate that metallic screening from the electrodes is affected by the difference in work functions at oxide surfaces. We show, using a tight-binding model and time-dependent density-functional theory, that a quasi-steady state current can be established dynamically in a finite nanoscale junction without any inelastic effects. This is simply due to the geometrical constriction experienced by the electron wavepackets as they propagate through the junction. We also show that in this closed non-equilibrium system two local electron occupation functions can be defined on each side of the nanojunction which approach Fermi distributions with increasing number of atoms in the electrodes. We develop and solve a continuum theory for the piezoelectric response of one dimensional nanotubes and nanowires, and apply the theory to study electromechanical effects in BN nanotubes. We find that the polarization of a nanotube depends on its aspect ratio, and a dimensionless constant specifying the ratio of the strengths of the elastic and electrostatic interactions. The solutions of the model as these two parameters are varied are discussed. Using time-dependent current-density functional theory, we derive analytically the dynamical exchange-correlation correction to the DC conductance of nanoscale junctions. The correction pertains to the conductance calculated in the zero-frequency limit of time-dependent density-functional theory within the adiabatic local-density approximation. In particular, we show that in linear response the correction depends non-linearly on the gradient of the electron density; thus, it is more pronounced for molecular junctions than for quantum point contacts. We combine ab initio, tight-binding methods and analytical theory to study piezoelectric effect of boron nitride nanotubes. We find that piezoelectricity of a heteropolar nanotube depends on its chirality and diameter and can be understood starting from the piezoelectric response of an isolated planar sheet, along with a structure specific mapping from the sheet onto the tube surface. We demonstrate that coupling between the uniaxial and shear deformation are only allowed in the nanotubes with lower chiral symmetry. We have developed and implemented a formalism for computing the structural response of a periodic insulating system to a homogeneous static electric field within density-functional perturbation theory (DFPT). We consider the thermodynamic potentials E(R,eta,e) and F(R,eta,e) whose minimization with respect to the internal structural parameters R and unit cell strain eta yields the equilibrium structure at fixed electric field e and polarization P, respectively. First-order expansion of E(R,eta,e) in e leads to a useful approximation in which R(P) and eta(P) can be obtained by simply minimizing the zero-field internal energy with respect to structural coordinates subject to the constraint of a fixed spontaneous polarization P. To facilitate this minimization, we formulate a modified DFPT scheme such that the computed derivatives of the polarization are consistent with the discretized form of the Berry-phase expression. We then describe the application of this approach to several problems associated with bulk and short-period superlattice structures of ferroelectric materials such as BaTiO3 and PbTiO3. These include the effects of compositionally broken inversion symmetry, the equilibrium structure for high values of polarization, field-induced structural phase transitions, and the lattice contributions to the linear and the non-linear dielectric constants., Comment: 19 pages, with 15 postscript figures embedded. We carry out first-principles density-functional calculations of the antiferrodistortive (AFD) and ferroelectric (FE) soft-mode instabilities in tetragonal SrTiO3, with the structural degrees of freedom treated in a classical, zero-temperature framework. In particular, we use frozen-phonon calculations to make a careful study of the anisotropy of the AFD and FE mode frequencies in the tetragonal ground state, in which an R-point AFD soft phonon has condensed. Because of the anharmonic couplings, the presence of this AFD distortion substantially affects both the AFD and FE mode frequencies. The AFD mode is found to be softer for rotations around a perpendicular axis (Eg mode) than for rotations about the tetragonal axis (A1g mode), in agreement with experimental results. The FE mode, on the other hand, is found to be softer when polarized perpendicular to the tetragonal axis (Eu mode) than parallel to it (A2u mode). The sign of this frequency splitting is consistent with the experimentally reported anisotropy of the dielectric susceptibility and other evidence. Ternary cubic perovskite compounds of the form A_(1/3)A'_(1/3)A''_(1/3)BO_3 and AB_(1/3)B'_(1/3)B''_(1/3)O_3, in which the differentiated cations form an alternating series of monolayers, are studied using first-principles methods. Such compounds are representative of a possible new class of materials in which ferroelectricity is perturbed by compositional breaking of inversion symmetry. For isovalent substitution on either sublattice, the ferroelectric double-well potential is found to persist, but becomes sufficiently asymmetric that minority domains may no longer survive. The strength of the symmetry breaking is enormously stronger for heterovalent substitution, so that the double-well behavior is completely destroyed.
