We study the effect of a varying pion mass on the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) phase diagram in the presence of an external magnetic field, aiming to understand it using Nambu\textendash Jona-Lasinio like effective models. We compare results from both its local and nonlocal versions. In both cases, we find that the inverse magnetic catalysis (IMC) near the crossover is eliminated with increasing pion mass, while the decreasing trend of crossover temperature with increasing magnetic field persists for pion mass values at least up to $440$ MeV. Thus, the models are capable of capturing qualitatively the results found by lattice QCD (LQCD) for heavy (unphysical) pions. The key feature in the models is the incorporation of the effect of a reduction in the coupling constant with increasing energy. Along with reproducing the IMC effect, it enables models to describe the effects of heavier current quark masses without introducing additional parameters. For the local NJL model, this agreement depends on how the parameters of the model are fit at the physical point. Decentralized learning (DL) offers a powerful framework where nodes collaboratively train models without sharing raw data and without the coordination of a central server. In the iterative rounds of DL, models are trained locally, shared with neighbors in the topology, and aggregated with other models received from neighbors. Sharing and merging models contribute to convergence towards a consensus model that generalizes better across the collective data captured at training time. In addition, the energy consumption while sharing and merging model parameters is negligible compared to the energy spent during the training phase. Leveraging this fact, we present SkipTrain, a novel DL algorithm, which minimizes energy consumption in decentralized learning by strategically skipping some training rounds and substituting them with synchronization rounds. These training-silent periods, besides saving energy, also allow models to better mix and finally produce models with superior accuracy than typical DL algorithms that train at every round. Our empirical evaluations with 256 nodes demonstrate that SkipTrain reduces energy consumption by 50% and increases model accuracy by up to 12% compared to D-PSGD, the conventional DL algorithm.

Decentralized learning (DL) faces increased vulnerability to privacy breaches due to sophisticated attacks on machine learning (ML) models. Secure aggregation is a computationally efficient cryptographic technique that enables multiple parties to compute an aggregate of their private data while keeping their individual inputs concealed from each other and from any central aggregator. To enhance communication efficiency in DL, sparsification techniques are used, selectively sharing only the most crucial parameters or gradients in a model, thereby maintaining efficiency without notably compromising accuracy. However, applying secure aggregation to sparsified models in DL is challenging due to the transmission of disjoint parameter sets by distinct nodes, which can prevent masks from canceling out effectively. This paper introduces CESAR, a novel secure aggregation protocol for DL designed to be compatible with existing sparsification mechanisms. CESAR provably defends against honest-but-curious adversaries and can be formally adapted to counteract collusion between them. We provide a foundational understanding of the interaction between the sparsification carried out by the nodes and the proportion of the parameters shared under CESAR in both colluding and non-colluding environments, offering analytical insight into the working and applicability of the protocol. Experiments on a network with 48 nodes in a 3-regular topology show that with random subsampling, CESAR is always within 0.5% accuracy of decentralized parallel stochastic gradient descent (D-PSGD), while adding only 11% of data overhead. Moreover, it surpasses the accuracy on TopK by up to 0.3% on independent and identically distributed (IID) data.

Decentralized learning (DL) enables collaborative learning without a server and without training data leaving the users' devices. However, the models shared in DL can still be used to infer training data. Conventional privacy defenses such as differential privacy and secure aggregation fall short in effectively safeguarding user privacy in DL. We introduce Shatter, a novel DL approach in which nodes create virtual nodes (VNs) to disseminate chunks of their full model on their behalf. This enhances privacy by (i) preventing attackers from collecting full models from other nodes, and (ii) hiding the identity of the original node that produced a given model chunk. We theoretically prove the convergence of Shatter and provide a formal analysis demonstrating how Shatter reduces the efficacy of attacks compared to when exchanging full models between participating nodes. We evaluate the convergence and attack resilience of Shatter with existing DL algorithms, with heterogeneous datasets, and against three standard privacy attacks, including gradient inversion. Our evaluation shows that Shatter not only renders these privacy attacks infeasible when each node operates 16 VNs but also exhibits a positive impact on model convergence compared to standard DL. This enhanced privacy comes with a manageable increase in communication volume.

This paper introduces ZIP-DL, a novel privacy-aware decentralized learning (DL) algorithm that exploits correlated noise to provide strong privacy protection against a local adversary while yielding efficient convergence guarantees for a low communication cost. The progressive neutralization of the added noise during the distributed aggregation process results in ZIP-DL fostering a high model accuracy under privacy guarantees. ZIP-DL further uses a single communication round between each gradient descent, thus minimizing communication overhead. We provide theoretical guarantees for both convergence speed and privacy guarantees, thereby making ZIP-DL applicable to practical scenarios. Our extensive experimental study shows that ZIP-DL significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art in terms of vulnerability/accuracy trade-off. In particular, ZIP-DL (i) reduces the efficacy of linkability attacks by up to 52 percentage points compared to baseline DL, (ii) improves accuracy by up to 37 percent w.r.t. the state-of-the-art privacy-preserving mechanism operating under the same threat model as ours, when configured to provide the same protection against membership inference attacks, and (iii) reduces communication by up to 10.5x against the same competitor for the same level of protection.

We present Epidemic Learning (EL), a simple yet powerful decentralized learning (DL) algorithm that leverages changing communication topologies to achieve faster model convergence compared to conventional DL approaches. At each round of EL, each node sends its model updates to a random sample of $s$ other nodes (in a system of $n$ nodes). We provide an extensive theoretical analysis of EL, demonstrating that its changing topology culminates in superior convergence properties compared to the state-of-the-art (static and dynamic) topologies. Considering smooth non-convex loss functions, the number of transient iterations for EL, i.e., the rounds required to achieve asymptotic linear speedup, is in $O(n^3/s^2)$ which outperforms the best-known bound $O(n^3)$ by a factor of $s^2$, indicating the benefit of randomized communication for DL. We empirically evaluate EL in a 96-node network and compare its performance with state-of-the-art DL approaches. Our results illustrate that EL converges up to $ 1.7\times$ quicker than baseline DL algorithms and attains $2.2 $\% higher accuracy for the same communication volume., Comment: Accepted paper at NeurIPS 2023

Decentralized learning (DL) systems have been gaining popularity because they avoid raw data sharing by communicating only model parameters, hence preserving data confidentiality. However, the large size of deep neural networks poses a significant challenge for decentralized training, since each node needs to exchange gigabytes of data, overloading the network. In this paper, we address this challenge with JWINS, a communication-efficient and fully decentralized learning system that shares only a subset of parameters through sparsification. JWINS uses wavelet transform to limit the information loss due to sparsification and a randomized communication cut-off that reduces communication usage without damaging the performance of trained models. We demonstrate empirically with 96 DL nodes on non-IID datasets that JWINS can achieve similar accuracies to full-sharing DL while sending up to 64% fewer bytes. Additionally, on low communication budgets, JWINS outperforms the state-of-the-art communication-efficient DL algorithm CHOCO-SGD by up to 4x in terms of network savings and time.

We perform a comprehensive analysis of medium modifications on ungroomed jet angularities, $\tau_a$, within the framework of Soft-Collinear Effective Theory with Glauber gluons (SCET$_{\rm G}$). Angularities are a one-parameter family of jet substructure observables with angularity exponent $a<2$ for infrared safety. Variation of the angularity exponent allows to modify the relative weighting of the collinear-to-soft radiations in the jet. In this article, we focus on angularity exponents $a<1$ and provide detailed results for $a=-1,0$, and $0.5$. Within SCET$_{\rm G}$, the interaction between jet and medium constituents is comprehended by off-shell Glauber gluons generated from the color gauge fields in the medium. While the medium modifications are incorporated in the jet function via the use of in-medium splitting functions, the soft function remains unmodified for $a<1$. For all values of $a$, we find that in the medium, the distributions are narrower and have a steeper fall compared to the vacuum ones. This redistribution of the ungroomed angularity spectrum is more apparent for a jet with a larger cone size. We also present results for the medium sensitivity towards $p_T$ of the jet and for a jet initiated in a less central event ($10-30\%$ centrality). Decentralized learning (DL) has gained prominence for its potential benefits in terms of scalability, privacy, and fault tolerance. It consists of many nodes that coordinate without a central server and exchange millions of parameters in the inherently iterative process of machine learning (ML) training. In addition, these nodes are connected in complex and potentially dynamic topologies. Assessing the intricate dynamics of such networks is clearly not an easy task. Often in literature, researchers resort to simulated environments that do not scale and fail to capture practical and crucial behaviors, including the ones associated to parallelism, data transfer, network delays, and wall-clock time. In this paper, we propose DecentralizePy, a distributed framework for decentralized ML, which allows for the emulation of large-scale learning networks in arbitrary topologies. We demonstrate the capabilities of DecentralizePy by deploying techniques such as sparsification and secure aggregation on top of several topologies, including dynamic networks with more than one thousand nodes.

Decentralized learning (DL) leverages edge devices for collaborative model training while avoiding coordination by a central server. Due to privacy concerns, DL has become an attractive alternative to centralized learning schemes since training data never leaves the device. In a round of DL, all nodes participate in model training and exchange their model with some other nodes. Performing DL in large-scale heterogeneous networks results in high communication costs and prolonged round durations due to slow nodes, effectively inflating the total training time. Furthermore, current DL algorithms also assume all nodes are available for training and aggregation at all times, diminishing the practicality of DL. This paper presents Plexus, an efficient, scalable, and practical DL system. Plexus (1) avoids network-wide participation by introducing a decentralized peer sampler that selects small subsets of available nodes that train the model each round and, (2) aggregates the trained models produced by nodes every round. Plexus is designed to handle joining and leaving nodes (churn). We extensively evaluate Plexus by incorporating realistic traces for compute speed, pairwise latency, network capacity, and availability of edge devices in our experiments. Our experiments on four common learning tasks empirically show that Plexus reduces time-to-accuracy by 1.2-8.3x, communication volume by 2.4-15.3x and training resources needed for convergence by 6.4-370x compared to baseline DL algorithms.

In this paper, we critically examine hierarchies between energy scales that determine quarkonium dynamics in the quark gluon plasma. A particularly important role is played by the ratio of the binding energy of species ($E_b$) and the medium scales; temperature ($T$) and Debye mass ($m_D$). It is well known that if these ratios are much larger than one then the dominant process governing quarkonium evolution is dissociation by thermal gluons (gluo-dissociation). On the other hand, if this ratio is much smaller than one then quarkonium dynamics is dominated by screening and Landau damping of the exchanged gluons. Here we show that over most of the evolution, the scale hierarchies do not fall in either limit and one needs to use the full structure of the gluonic spectral function to follow the dynamics of the $Q\bar{Q}$ pair. This has a significant bearing when we follow the quantum dynamics of quarkonia in the medium. The inverse medium relaxation time is also $\sim T$ and if $E_b$ is comparable (or larger) in magnitude to $T$, the quantum evolution of $Q\bar{Q}$ is non-local in time within the Brownian approximation., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

With the advent of multi-core systems, GPUs and FPGAs, loop parallelization has become a promising way to speed-up program execution. In order to stay up with time, various performance-oriented programming languages provide a multitude of constructs to allow programmers to write parallelizable loops. Correspondingly, researchers have developed techniques to automatically parallelize loops that do not carry dependences across iterations, and/or call pure functions. However, in managed languages with platform-independent runtimes such as Java, it is practically infeasible to perform complex dependence analysis during JIT compilation. In this paper, we propose AutoTornado, a first of its kind static+JIT loop parallelizer for Java programs that parallelizes loops for heterogeneous architectures using TornadoVM (a Graal-based VM that supports insertion of @Parallel constructs for loop parallelization). AutoTornado performs sophisticated dependence and purity analysis of Java programs statically, in the Soot framework, to generate constraints encoding conditions under which a given loop can be parallelized. The generated constraints are then fed to the Z3 theorem prover (which we have integrated with Soot) to annotate canonical for loops that can be parallelized using the @Parallel construct. We have also added runtime support in TornadoVM to use static analysis results for loop parallelization. Our evaluation over several standard parallelization kernels shows that AutoTornado correctly parallelizes 61.3% of manually parallelizable loops, with an efficient static analysis and a near-zero runtime overhead. To the best of our knowledge, AutoTornado is not only the first tool that performs program-analysis based parallelization for a real-world JVM, but also the first to integrate Z3 with Soot for loop parallelization.

We construct a measure of transverse momentum loss of jets in nuclear collisions at LHC directly using measurements of jet cross sections in PbPb and pp collisions. The proposal is shown to be equivalent to R_AA and is equally straightforward to construct. Using data from the ATLAS collaboration at two different collision energies, we show that the proposed measure has small statistical uncertainties. We argue that systematic errors can be easily improved over our estimates by the experimental collaboration to such an extent that it directly probes whether the jet-medium interaction is due to a strongly interacting medium or a weakly interacting plasma. We argue that the current data may marginally favour a strongly interacting medium. On the other hand, assuming that the medium is weakly interacting, we are able to provide estimates of the jet quenching parameter qhat which are in rough agreement with previously reported estimates.

Federated learning (FL) enables a set of client devices to collaboratively train a model without sharing raw data. This process, though, operates under the constrained computation and communication resources of edge devices. These constraints combined with systems heterogeneity force some participating clients to perform fewer local updates than expected by the server, thus slowing down convergence. Exhaustive tuning of hyperparameters in FL, furthermore, can be resource-intensive, without which the convergence is adversely affected. In this work, we propose GeL, the guess and learn algorithm. GeL enables constrained edge devices to perform additional learning through guessed updates on top of gradient-based steps. These guesses are gradientless, i.e., participating clients leverage them for free. Our generic guessing algorithm (i) can be flexibly combined with several state-of-the-art algorithms including FedProx, FedNova or FedYogi; and (ii) achieves significantly improved performance when the learning rates are not best tuned. We conduct extensive experiments and show that GeL can boost empirical convergence by up to 40% in resource-constrained networks while relieving the need for exhaustive learning rate tuning., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

The capsule network is a distinct and promising segment of the neural network family that drew attention due to its unique ability to maintain the equivariance property by preserving the spatial relationship amongst the features. The capsule network has attained unprecedented success over image classification tasks with datasets such as MNIST and affNIST by encoding the characteristic features into the capsules and building the parse-tree structure. However, on the datasets involving complex foreground and background regions such as CIFAR-10, the performance of the capsule network is sub-optimal due to its naive data routing policy and incompetence towards extracting complex features. This paper proposes a new design strategy for capsule network architecture for efficiently dealing with complex images. The proposed method incorporates wide bottleneck residual modules and the Squeeze and Excitation attention blocks upheld by the modified FM routing algorithm to address the defined problem. A wide bottleneck residual module facilitates extracting complex features followed by the squeeze and excitation attention block to enable channel-wise attention by suppressing the trivial features. This setup allows channel inter-dependencies at almost no computational cost, thereby enhancing the representation ability of capsules on complex images. We extensively evaluate the performance of the proposed model on three publicly available datasets, namely CIFAR-10, Fashion MNIST, and SVHN, to outperform the top-5 performance on CIFAR-10 and Fashion MNIST with highly competitive performance on the SVHN dataset., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

In presence of magnetic field we have done a systematic analysis to constrain the strength of 't Hooft determinant term using LQCD data within a non-local version of two flavour NJL model. The charged and neutral pion mass difference can be attributed to both the QED and QCD contributions. The current quark mass difference ($\Delta m$) is the source of the QCD contribution. Here, in a two-flavour non-local NJL model, we try to estimate the QCD contribution. Interestingly, we find that the strength of the $U(1)_A$ symmetry-breaking parameter $c$ plays a crucial role in obtaining the pion mass difference while intertwined with the current quark mass difference. To obtain the QCD contribution for the pion mass difference, we scan the parameter space in $\{\Delta m,\; c\}$, and by comparing this with the existing results, we constrained the parameter space. Further, using a fitted value of $c$, we determine the allowed range for the $\Delta m$ in the model. The model estimated $\Delta m$ ranges enable us to extract the chiral perturbation theory low-energy constant, $l_7$ and verify the dependence of the pion mass difference on $\Delta m$. In relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC, a quark gluon plasma (QGP) is created for a short duration of about 10fm/c. Quarkonia (bound states of $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$) are sensitive probes of this phase on length scales comparable to the size of the bound states which are less than 1fm. Observations of quarkonia in these collisions provide us with a lot of information about how the presence of a QGP affects various quarkonium states. This has motivated the development of the theory of heavy quarks and their bound states in a thermal medium, and its application to the phenomenology of quarkonia in heavy ion collisions. In our world the standard model of particle physics contains within it the fairly intractable theory called QCD. A toy version with two colours is often studied as a model confining and chiral symmetry breaking field theory. Here we investigate the cascade of changes at various distance scales if we make this change within the standard model. It is possible to limit the changes at the hadronic scale. However, the minor changes that occur actually cascade down to the far infrared, into nuclear and atomic physics, and chemistry. Through this it also possibly affects the evolution of stars and galaxies. We study the two flavour non-local Nambu\textemdash Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model in the presence of a magnetic field and explore the chiral crossover in presence of a non-local form of the 't Hooft determinant term. Its coupling is governed by a dimensionless parameter $c$. This term is responsible for the explicit breaking of $U(1)_A$ symmetry. We have attempted a systematic analysis of the model parameters by fitting to self-consistent lattice QCD calculations. Three parameters of the model are fixed by $eB=0$ results from published lattice QCD on the chiral condensate, the pion decay constant ($F_\pi$), and the pion mass ($m_\pi$). The difference of the $u$ and $d$ quark condensates in the presence of a magnetic field ($eB$) is quite sensitive to $c$ and we fix $c$ using published lattice QCD results for this observable. We see no evidence that $c$ depends on $eB$. The crossover temperature decreases with increasing $eB$ only for condensate values at the lower end of the allowed values (as already seen in~\cite{Pagura:2016pwr}) and $F_\pi$ at the upper end of the allowed values. We further check our model predictions by calculating the topological susceptibility with the fitted $c$ values and comparing it with lattice results. Since the topological susceptibility is related to the extent of the $U(1)_A$ symmetry breaking, we find that it is sensitive to the value of $c$., Comment: 24 pages, 13 captioned figures, Results substantially improved: now we have a better prediction for the 't Hooft determinant strength

Lattice measurements provide adequate information to fix the parameters of long distance effective field theories in Euclidean time. Using such a theory, we examine the analytic continuation of long distance correlation functions of composite operators at finite temperature from Euclidean to Minkowski space time. We show through an explicit computation that the analytic continuation of the pion correlation function is possible and gives rise to non-trivial effects. Among them is the possibility, supported by lattice computations of Euclidean correlators, that long distance excitations can be understood in terms of (very massive) pions even at temperatures higher than the QCD cross over temperature.

This paper presents EinsteinPy (version 0.3), a community-developed Python package for gravitational and relativistic astrophysics. Python is a free, easy to use a high-level programming language which has seen a huge expansion in the number of its users and developers in recent years. Specifically, a lot of recent studies show that the use of Python in Astrophysics and general physics has increased exponentially. We aim to provide a very high level of abstraction, an easy to use interface and pleasing user experience. EinsteinPy is developed keeping in mind the state of a theoretical gravitational physicist with little or no background in computer programming and trying to work in the field of numerical relativity or trying to use simulations in their research. Currently, EinsteinPy supports simulation of time-like and null geodesics and calculates trajectories in different background geometries some of which are Schwarzschild, Kerr, and KerrNewmann along with coordinate inter-conversion pipeline. It has a partially developed pipeline for plotting and visualization with dependencies on libraries like Plotly, matplotlib, etc. One of the unique features of EinsteinPy is a sufficiently developed symbolic tensor manipulation utilities which are a great tool in itself for teaching yourself tensor algebra which for many beginner students can be overwhelmingly tricky. In the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), it is well known that the evolution of quarkonia is affected by the screening of the interaction between the quark and the anti-quark. In addition, exchange of energy and color with the surrounding medium can be included via the incorporation of noise terms in the evolution Hamiltonian. For noise correlated locally in time, these dynamics have been studied in a simple setting by Kajimoto et al.[PHYS. REV. D 97, 014003(2018)]. We extend this calculation by considering non-Abelian dynamics for a three-dimensional wavefunction. We also propose a modification of the noise correlation, allowing it to have a finite correlation in time with the motivation to include long-lived gluonic correlations. Lattice measurements provide adequate information to fix the parameters of long distance effective field theories in Euclidean time. There are two definitions of mass in each regime; in Euclidean these are the screening and pole masses. The analytic continuation of these mass parameters to real time is non-trivial. This is in contrast to the situation at zero temperature.

In this paper we introduce Curriculum GANs, a curriculum learning strategy for training Generative Adversarial Networks that increases the strength of the discriminator over the course of training, thereby making the learning task progressively more difficult for the generator. We demonstrate that this strategy is key to obtaining state-of-the-art results in image generation. We also show evidence that this strategy may be broadly applicable to improving GAN training in other data modalities.

In typical machine learning tasks and applications, it is necessary to obtain or create large labeled datasets in order to to achieve high performance. Unfortunately, large labeled datasets are not always available and can be expensive to source, creating a bottleneck towards more widely applicable machine learning. The paradigm of weak supervision offers an alternative that allows for integration of domain-specific knowledge by enforcing constraints that a correct solution to the learning problem will obey over the output space. In this work, we explore the application of this paradigm to 2-D physical systems governed by non-linear differential equations. We demonstrate that knowledge of the partial differential equations governing a system can be encoded into the loss function of a neural network via an appropriately chosen convolutional kernel. We demonstrate this by showing that the steady-state solution to the 2-D heat equation can be learned directly from initial conditions by a convolutional neural network, in the absence of labeled training data. We also extend recent work in the progressive growing of fully convolutional networks to achieve high accuracy (< 1.5% error) at multiple scales of the heat-flow problem, including at the very large scale (1024x1024). Finally, we demonstrate that this method can be used to speed up exact calculation of the solution to the differential equations via finite difference.

Cross-validation is the workhorse of modern applied statistics and machine learning, as it provides a principled framework for selecting the model that maximizes generalization performance. In this paper, we show that the cross-validation risk is differentiable with respect to the hyperparameters and training data for many common machine learning algorithms, including logistic regression, elastic-net regression, and support vector machines. Leveraging this property of differentiability, we propose a cross-validation gradient method (CVGM) for hyperparameter optimization. Our method enables efficient optimization in high-dimensional hyperparameter spaces of the cross-validation risk, the best surrogate of the true generalization ability of our learning algorithm., Comment: 11 pages

With the advent of e-commerce and online banking it has become extremely important that the websites of the financial institutes (especially, banks) implement up-to-date measures of cyber security (in accordance with the recommendations of the regulatory authority) and thus circumvent the possibilities of financial frauds that may occur due to vulnerabilities of the website. Here, we systematically investigate whether Indian banks are following the above requirement. To perform the investigation, recommendations of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), European Union Agency for Network and Information Security (ENISA) and Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) are considered as the benchmarks. Phase segregation, the process by which the components of a binary mixture spontaneously separate, is a key process in the evolution and design of many chemical, mechanical, and biological systems. In this work, we present a data-driven approach for the learning, modeling, and prediction of phase segregation. A direct mapping between an initially dispersed, immiscible binary fluid and the equilibrium concentration field is learned by conditional generative convolutional neural networks. Concentration field predictions by the deep learning model conserve phase fraction, correctly predict phase transition, and reproduce area, perimeter, and total free energy distributions up to 98% accuracy., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1709.02432

Deep generative models are powerful tools that have produced impressive results in recent years. These advances have been for the most part empirically driven, making it essential that we use high quality evaluation metrics. In this paper, we provide new insights into the Inception Score, a recently proposed and widely used evaluation metric for generative models, and demonstrate that it fails to provide useful guidance when comparing models. We discuss both suboptimalities of the metric itself and issues with its application. Finally, we call for researchers to be more systematic and careful when evaluating and comparing generative models, as the advancement of the field depends upon it., Comment: Proc. Using only global symmetries of QCD, we set up an effective model of quarks at finite temperature near the cross over, including all possible terms up to dimension 6. We first treat this in mean field theory. Then we investigate low-energy fluctuations around it up to one-loop order in fermions below the cross over. Static correlation functions of pions and the cross over temperature, both measured on the lattice, completely suffice to fix all parameters of the theory. We examine predictions of this theory, including those for thermodynamic quantities. The results are encouraging., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

We present new results for the suppression of high transverse momentum charmonium [$J/\psi, \psi(2S)$] and bottomonium [$\Upsilon(1S),\Upsilon(2S),\Upsilon(3S)$] states in Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Our theoretical formalism combines the collisional dissociation of quarkonia, as they propagate in the quark-gluon plasma, with the thermal wavefunction effects due to the screening of the $Q\bar{Q}$ attractive potential in the medium. We find that a good description of the relative suppression of the ground and higher excited quarkonium states, transverse momentum and centrality distributions is achieved, when comparison to measurements at a center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV is performed. We discuss the mean field theory, the fixing of parameters, and a prediction for the curvature of the critical line. We present the first calculation of the shear viscosity for two-flavor plane wave (FF) color superconducting quark matter. This is a member of the family of crystalline color superconducting phases of dense quark matter that may be present in the cores of neutron stars. The paired quarks in the FF phase feature gapless excitations on surfaces of crescent shaped blocking regions in momentum space and participate in transport. We calculate their contribution to the shear viscosity. We note that they also lead to dynamic screening of transverse $t^1$, $t^2$, $t^3$ gluons which are undamped in the 2SC phase. The exchange of these gluons is the most important mechanism of the scattering of the paired quarks. We find that the shear viscosity of the paired quarks is roughly a factor of $100$ smaller compared to the shear viscosity of unpaired quark matter. A feasible, secure and collusion-attack-free quantum sealed-bid auction protocol is proposed using a modified scheme for multi-party circular quantum key agreement. In the proposed protocol, the set of all ($n$) bidders is grouped in to $l$ subsets (sub-circles) in such a way that only the initiator (who prepares the quantum state to be distributed for a particular round of communication and acts as the receiver in that round) is a member of all the subsets (sub-circles) prepared for a particular round, while any other bidder is part of only a single subset. All $n$ bidders and auctioneer initiate one round of communication, and each of them prepares $l$ copies of a $\left(r-1\right)$-partite entangled state (one for each sub-circle), where $r=\frac{n}{l}+1$. The efficiency and security\textcolor{blue}{{} }of the proposed protocol are critically analyzed. It is shown that the proposed protocol is free from the collusion attacks that are possible on the existing schemes of quantum sealed-bid auction. Further, it is observed that the security against collusion attack increases with the increase in $l$, but that reduces the complexity (number of entangled qubits in each entangled state) of the entangled states to be used and that makes the scheme scalable and implementable with the available technologies. The additional security and scalability is shown to arise due to the use of a circular structure in place of a complete-graph or tree-type structure used earlier., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

We present a proposal to measure anisotropic shear viscosity in a strongly interacting, ultra-cold, unitary Fermi gas confined in a harmonic trap. We introduce anisotropy in this setup by strongly confining the gas in one of the directions with relatively weak confinement in the remaining directions. This system has a close resemblance to anisotropic strongly coupled field theories studied recently in the context of gauge-gravity duality. Computations in such theories (which have gravity duals) revealed that some of the viscosity components of the anisotropic shear viscosity tensor can be made much smaller than the entropy density, thus parametrically violating the bound proposed by Kovtun, Son and Starinets (KSS): $\frac {\eta} {s} \geq \frac{1}{4 \pi}$. A Boltzmann analysis performed in a system of weakly interacting particles in a linear potential also shows that components of the viscosity tensor can be reduced. Motivated by these exciting results, we propose two hydrodynamic modes in the unitary Fermi gas whose damping is governed by the component of shear viscosity expected to violate the KSS bound. One of these modes is the well known scissor mode. We estimate trap parameters for which the reduction in the shear viscosity is of order unity and find that the trap geometry, the damping timescales, and mode amplitudes are within the range of existing experimental setups on ultra-cold Fermi gases., Comment: Shorter version of arXiv:1607.04799

We theoretically investigate the dynamic structure factor of a strongly interacting Fermi gas at the crossover from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superfluids to Bose-Einstein condensates, by developing an improved random phase approximation within the framework of a density functional theory - the so-called superfluid local density approximation. Compared with the previous random-phase-approximation studies based on the standard Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, the use of the density functional theory greatly improves the accuracy of the equation of state at the crossover, and leads to a better description of both collective Bogoliubov-Anderson-Goldstone phonon mode and single-particle fermionic excitations at small transferred momentum. Near unitarity, where the s-wave scattering length diverges, we show that the single-particle excitations start to significantly contribute to the spectrum of dynamic structure factor once the frequency is above a threshold of the energy gap at $2\Delta$. The sharp rise in the spectrum at this threshold can be utilized to measure the pairing gap $\Delta$. Together with the sound velocity determined from the phonon branch, the dynamic structure factor provides us some key information of the crossover Fermi superfluid. Our predictions could be examined in experiments with $^{6}$Li or $^{40}$K atoms using Bragg spectroscopy., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Private comparison is a primitive for many cryptographic tasks, and recently several schemes for the quantum private comparison (QPC) have been proposed, where two users can compare the equality of their secrets with the help of a semi-honest third party (TP) without knowing each other's secret and without disclosing the same to the TP. In the exisiting schemes, secrecy is obtained by using conjugate coding, and considering all participants as quantum users who can perform measurement(s) and/or create states in basis other than computational basis. In contrast, here we propose two new protocols for QPC, first of which does not use conjugate coding (uses orthogonal states only) and the second one allows the users other than TP to be classical whose activities are restricted to either reflecting a quantum state or measuring it in computational basis. We consider a system consisting of a strongly interacting, ultracold unitary Fermi gas under harmonic confinement. Our analysis suggests the possibility of experimentally studying, in this system, an anisotropic shear viscosity tensor driven by the anisotropy in the trapping potential. In particular, we suggest that this experimental setup could mimic some features of anisotropic geometries that have recently been studied for strongly coupled field theories which have a gravitational dual. Results using the AdS/CFT correspondence in these theories show that in systems with a background linear potential, certain viscosity components can be made much smaller than the entropy density, parametrically violating the bound proposed by Kovtun, Son and Starinets (KSS). This intuition, along with results from a Boltzmann analysis that we perform, suggests that a violation of the KSS bound can perhaps occur in the unitary Fermi gas system when it is subjected to a suitable anisotropic trapping potential which may be approximated to be linear in a suitable range of parameters. We give a concrete proposal for an experimental setup where an anisotropic shear viscosity tensor may arise. In such situations, it may also be possible to observe a reduction in the spin one component of the shear viscosity from its lowest value observed so far in ultracold Fermi gases. In extreme anisotropic situations, the reduction may be enough to reduce the shear viscosity to entropy ratio below the proposed KSS bound, although this regime is difficult to analyze in a theoretically controlled manner., Comment: 56 pages, 8 figures

Recently Tian, Zhang and Li (TZL) have proposed a protocol for voting based on controlled quantum teleportation (Int. J. Theor. Phys. DOI 10.1007/s10773-015-2868-8). We have critically analyzed the protocol and have shown that it's neither efficient nor secure. Further, it is shown that in the TZL protocol, the scrutineer Charlie does not have the required control over the voting process. Apart from showing the limitations of TZL protocol, two improved protocols for quantum voting along the line of TZL protocol are proposed here. One of the proposed protocols is designed using a standard scheme of controlled deterministic secure quantum communication, and the other one is designed using the idea of quantum cryptographic switch which uses a technique known as permutation of particles (PoP). A few possible alternative approaches to accomplish the same task have also been discussed. In secure quantum communication protocols, a set of single qubits prepared using 2 or more mutually unbiased bases or a set of $n$-qubit ($n\geq2$) entangled states of a particular form are usually used to form a verification string which is subsequently used to detect traces of eavesdropping. The qubits that form a verification string are referred to as decoy qubits, and there exists a large set of different quantum states that can be used as decoy qubits. In the absence of noise, any choice of decoy qubits provides equivalent security. In this paper, we examine such equivalence for noisy environment (e.g., in amplitude damping, phase damping, collective dephasing and collective rotation noise channels) by comparing the decoy-qubit assisted schemes of secure quantum communication that use single qubit states as decoy qubits with the schemes that use entangled states as decoy qubits. Our study reveals that the single qubit assisted scheme perform better in some noisy environments, while some entangled qubits assisted schemes perform better in other noisy environments. Specifically, single qubits assisted schemes perform better in amplitude damping and phase damping noisy channels, whereas a few Bell-state-based decoy schemes are found to perform better in the presence of the collective noise. Thus, if the kind of noise present in a communication channel (i.e., the characteristics of the channel) is known or measured, then the present study can provide the best choice of decoy qubits required for implementation of schemes of secure quantum communication through that channel., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

The superfluid transition of liquid Helium shares an interesting phenomenon with the chiral limit of QCD: the specific heat is finite at the critical point, but has a cusp. From this follows an interesting mixture of universal and non-universal features at the critical point. Through the CP symmetry of chiral QCD, this has implications for the fourth order baryon number susceptibility and susceptibilities of higher orders. We study the impact of the nucleon-$\alpha$ P-wave resonances on neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung. Because of the non-central spin-orbit interaction, these resonances lead to an enhanced contribution to the nucleon spin structure factor for temperatures $T \lesssim 4$ MeV. If the $\alpha$-particle fraction is significant and the temperature is in this range, this contribution is competitive with neutron-neutron bremsstrahlung. This may be relevant for neutrino production in core-collapse supernovae or other dense astrophysical environments. We argue that the relative yields of $\Upsilon$ states observed at the LHC can be understood as bottomonium states coming to early thermal equilibrium and then freezing out. We present a comparison between simulated dynamics of the unitary fermion gas using the superfluid local density approximation (SLDA) and a simplified bosonic model, the extended Thomas Fermi (ETF) with a unitary equation of state. Small amplitude fluctuations have similar dynamics in both theories for frequencies far below the pair breaking threshold and wave vectors much smaller than the Fermi momentum, and the low frequency linear responses match well for surprisingly large wave vectors, even up to the Fermi momentum. For non-linear dynamics such as vortex generation, the ETF provides a semi-quantitative description of SLDA dynamics as long as the fluctuations do not have significant power near the pair breaking threshold, otherwise the dynamics of the ETF cannot be trusted. Nonlinearities in the ETF tends to generate high-frequency fluctuations, and with no normal component to remove this energy from the superfluid, features like vortex lattices cannot relax and crystallize as they do in the SLDA. We present an efficient and general method to compute vortex-pinning interactions - which arise in neutron stars, superconductors, and trapped cold atoms - at arbitrary separations using real-time dynamics. This method overcomes uncertainties associated with matter redistribution by the vortex position and the related choice of ensemble that plague the typical approach of comparing energy differences between stationary pinned and unpinned configurations: uncertainties that prevent agreement in the literature on the sign and magnitude of the vortex-nucleus interaction in the crust of neutron stars. We demonstrate and validate the method with Gross-Pitaevskii-like equations for the unitary Fermi gas, and demonstrate how the technique of adiabatic state preparation with time-dependent simulation can be used to calculate vortex-pinning interactions in fermionic systems such as the vortex-nucleus interaction in the crust of neutron stars., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We calculate the yields of quarkonia in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC as a function of their transverse momentum. Based upon non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics, our results include both color-singlet and color-octet contributions and feed-down effects from excited states. In reactions with ultra-relativistic nuclei, we focus on the consistent implementation of dynamically calculated nuclear matter effects, such as coherent power corrections, cold nuclear matter energy loss, and the Cronin effect in the initial state. In the final state, we consider radiative energy loss for the color-octet state and collisional dissociation of quarkonia as they traverse through the QGP. Theoretical results are presented for J/psi and Upsilon and compared to experimental data where applicable. At RHIC, a good description of the high-pT J/psi modification observed in central Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions can be achieved within the model uncertainties. We find that measurements of J/psi yields in proton-nucleus reactions are needed to constrain the magnitude of cold nuclear matter effects. At the LHC, a good description of the experimental data can be achieved only in mid-central and peripheral Pb+Pb collisions.
