As AI-enhanced academic search systems become increasingly popular among researchers, investigating their AI transparency is crucial to ensure trust in the search outcomes, as well as the reliability and integrity of scholarly work. This study employs a qualitative content analysis approach to examine the websites of a sample of 10 AI-enhanced academic search systems identified through university library guides. The assessed level of transparency varies across these systems: five provide detailed information about their mechanisms, three offer partial information, and two provide little to no information. These findings indicate that the academic community is recommending and using tools with opaque functionalities, raising concerns about research integrity, including issues of reproducibility and researcher responsibility.

Arabic is a complex language with many varieties and dialects spoken by over 450 millions all around the world. Due to the linguistic diversity and variations, it is challenging to build a robust and generalized ASR system for Arabic. In this work, we address this gap by developing and demoing a system, dubbed VoxArabica, for dialect identification (DID) as well as automatic speech recognition (ASR) of Arabic. We train a wide range of models such as HuBERT (DID), Whisper, and XLS-R (ASR) in a supervised setting for Arabic DID and ASR tasks. Our DID models are trained to identify 17 different dialects in addition to MSA. We finetune our ASR models on MSA, Egyptian, Moroccan, and mixed data. Additionally, for the remaining dialects in ASR, we provide the option to choose various models such as Whisper and MMS in a zero-shot setting. We integrate these models into a single web interface with diverse features such as audio recording, file upload, model selection, and the option to raise flags for incorrect outputs. Overall, we believe VoxArabica will be useful for a wide range of audiences concerned with Arabic research. Arabic dialect identification (ADI) tools are an important part of the large-scale data collection pipelines necessary for training speech recognition models. As these pipelines require application of ADI tools to potentially out-of-domain data, we aim to investigate how vulnerable the tools may be to this domain shift. With self-supervised learning (SSL) models as a starting point, we evaluate transfer learning and direct classification from SSL features. We undertake our evaluation under rich conditions, with a goal to develop ADI systems from pretrained models and ultimately evaluate performance on newly collected data. In order to understand what factors contribute to model decisions, we carry out a careful human study of a subset of our data. Our analysis confirms that domain shift is a major challenge for ADI models. We also find that while self-training does alleviate this challenges, it may be insufficient for realistic conditions.

A persistent spatial organization of eddies is identified in the lowest portion of the stably-stratified planetary boundary layer. The analysis uses flow realizations from published large-eddy simulations (Sullivan et al., J Atmos Sci 73(4):1815-1840, 2016) ranging in stability from neutral to nearly z-less stratification. The coherent turbulent structure is well approximated as a series of uniform momentum zones (UMZs) and uniform temperature zones (UTZs) separated by thin layers of intense gradients that are significantly greater than the mean. This pattern yields stairstep-like instantaneous flow profiles whose shape is distinct from the mean profiles that emerge from long-term averaging. However, the scaling of the stairstep organization is closely related to the resulting mean profiles. The differences in velocity and temperature across the thin gradient layers remain proportional to the surface momentum and heat flux conditions regardless of stratification. The vertical thickness of UMZs and UTZs is proportional to height above the surface for neutral and weak stratification, but becomes thinner and less dependent on height as the stability increases. Deviations from the logarithmic mean profiles for velocity and temperature observed under neutral conditions are therefore predominately due to the reduction in zone size with increasing stratification, which is empirically captured by existing Monin-Obukhov similarity relations for momentum and heat. The zone properties are additionally used to explain trends in the turbulent Prandtl number, thus providing a connection between the eddy organization, mean profiles, and turbulent diffusivity in stably stratified conditions., Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures

ASR systems designed for native English (L1) usually underperform on non-native English (L2). To address this performance gap, \textbf{(i)} we extend our previous work to investigate fine-tuning of a pre-trained wav2vec 2.0 model \cite{baevski2020wav2vec,xu2021self} under a rich set of L1 and L2 training conditions. We further \textbf{(ii)} incorporate language model decoding in the ASR system, along with the fine-tuning method. Quantifying gains acquired from each of these two approaches separately and an error analysis allows us to identify different sources of improvement within our models. We find that while the large self-trained wav2vec 2.0 may be internalizing sufficient decoding knowledge for clean L1 speech \cite{xu2021self}, this does not hold for L2 speech and accounts for the utility of employing language model decoding on L2 data., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2110.00678

To address the performance gap of English ASR models on L2 English speakers, we evaluate fine-tuning of pretrained wav2vec 2.0 models (Baevski et al., 2020; Xu et al., 2021) on L2-ARCTIC, a non-native English speech corpus (Zhao et al., 2018) under different training settings. We compare \textbf{(a)} models trained with a combination of diverse accents to ones trained with only specific accents and \textbf{(b)} results from different single-accent models. Our experiments demonstrate the promise of developing ASR models for non-native English speakers, even with small amounts of L2 training data and even without a language model. Our models also excel in the zero-shot setting where we train on multiple L2 datasets and test on a blind L2 test set., Comment: All authors contributed equally. We describe test observations made with a customized 640 x 512 pixel Indium Gallium Arsenide (InGaAs) prototype astronomical camera on the 100" DuPont telescope. This is the first test of InGaAs as a cost-effective alternative to HgCdTe for research-grade astronomical observations. The camera exhibits an instrument background of 113 e-/sec/pixel (dark + thermal) at an operating temperature of -40C for the sensor, maintained by a simple thermo-electric cooler. The optical train and mechanical structure float at ambient temperature with no cold stop, in contrast to most IR instruments which must be cooled to mitigate thermal backgrounds. Measurements of the night sky using a reimager with plate scale of 0.4 arc seconds / pixel show that the sky flux in Y is comparable to the dark current. At J the sky brightness exceeds dark current by a factor of four, and hence dominates the noise budget. The sensor read noise of ~43e- falls below sky+dark noise for exposures of t>7 seconds in Y and 3.5 seconds in J. We present test observations of several selected science targets, including high-significance detections of a lensed Type Ia supernova, a type IIb supernova, and a z=6.3 quasar. Deeper images are obtained for two local galaxies monitored for IR transients, and a galaxy cluster at z=0.87. Finally, we observe a partial transit of the hot JupiterHATS34b, demonstrating the photometric stability required over several hours to detect a 1.2% transit depth at high significance. A tiling of available larger-format sensors would produce an IR survey instrument with significant cost savings relative to HgCdTe-based cameras, if one is willing to forego the K band. Such a camera would be sensitive for a week or more to isotropic emission from r-process kilonova ejecta similar to that observed in GW170817, over the full 190 Mpc horizon of Advanced LIGO's design sensitivity for neutron star mergers., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, submitted to AJ

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is a NASA-sponsored Explorer mission that will perform a wide-field survey for planets that transit bright host stars. Here, we predict the properties of the transiting planets that TESS will detect along with the eclipsing binary stars that produce false-positive photometric signals. The predictions are based on Monte Carlo simulations of the nearby population of stars, occurrence rates of planets derived from Kepler, and models for the photometric performance and sky coverage of the TESS cameras. We expect that TESS will find approximately 1700 transiting planets from 200,000 pre-selected target stars. This includes 556 planets smaller than twice the size of Earth, of which 419 are hosted by M dwarf stars and 137 are hosted by FGK dwarfs. Approximately 130 of the $R < 2~R_\oplus$ planets will have host stars brighter than K = 9. Approximately 48 of the planets with $R < 2~R_\oplus$ lie within or near the habitable zone ($0.2 < S/S_\oplus < 2$), and between 2-7 such planets have host stars brighter than K = 9. We also expect approximately 1100 detections of planets with radii 2-4 R_Earth, and 67 planets larger than $4~R_\oplus$. Additional planets larger than $2~R_\oplus$ can be detected around stars that are not among the pre-selected target stars, because TESS will also deliver full-frame images at a 30-minute cadence. The planet detections are accompanied by over one thousand astrophysical false positives. We discuss how TESS data and ground-based observations can be used to distinguish the false positives from genuine planets. Originally designed for night-vision equipment, InGaAs detectors are beginning to achieve background-limited performance in broadband imaging from the ground. The lower cost of these detectors can enable multi-band instruments, arrays of small telescopes, and large focal planes that would be uneconomical with high-performance HgCdTe detectors. We developed a camera to operate the FLIR AP1121 sensor using deep thermoelectric cooling and up-the-ramp sampling to minimize noise. We measured a dark current of 163$~e$- s$^{-1}$ pix$^{-1}$, a read noise of 87$~e$- up-the-ramp, and a well depth of 80k$~e$-. Laboratory photometric testing achieved a stability of 230 ppm hr$^{-1/2}$, which would be required for detecting exoplanet transits. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) will search for planets transiting bright and nearby stars. TESS has been selected by NASA for launch in 2017 as an Astrophysics Explorer mission. The spacecraft will be placed into a highly elliptical 13.7-day orbit around the Earth. During its two-year mission, TESS will employ four wide-field optical CCD cameras to monitor at least 200,000 main-sequence dwarf stars with I = 4-13 for temporary drops in brightness caused by planetary transits. Each star will be observed for an interval ranging from one month to one year, depending mainly on the star's ecliptic latitude. The longest observing intervals will be for stars near the ecliptic poles, which are the optimal locations for follow-up observations with the James Webb Space Telescope. Brightness measurements of preselected target stars will be recorded every 2 min, and full frame images will be recorded every 30 min. TESS stars will be 10-100 times brighter than those surveyed by the pioneering Kepler mission. This will make TESS planets easier to characterize with follow-up observations. TESS is expected to find more than a thousand planets smaller than Neptune, including dozens that are comparable in size to the Earth. Public data releases will occur every four months, inviting immediate community-wide efforts to study the new planets. We have designed, constructed, and tested an InGaAs near-infrared camera to explore whether low-cost detectors can make small (<1 m) telescopes capable of precise (<1 mmag) infrared photometry of relatively bright targets. The camera is constructed around the 640x512 pixel APS640C sensor built by FLIR Electro-Optical Components. We designed custom analog-to-digital electronics for maximum stability and minimum noise. The InGaAs dark current halves with every 7 deg C of cooling, and we reduce it to 840 e-/s/pixel (with a pixel-to-pixel variation of +/-200 e-/s/pixel) by cooling the array to -20 deg C. Beyond this point, glow from the readout dominates. The single-sample read noise of 149 e- is reduced to 54 e- through up-the-ramp sampling. Laboratory testing with a star field generated by a lenslet array shows that 2-star differential photometry is possible to a precision of 631 +/-205 ppm (0.68 mmag) hr^-0.5 at a flux of 2.4E4 e-/s. Employing three comparison stars and de-correlating reference signals further improves the precision to 483 +/-161 ppm (0.52 mmag) hr^-0.5. Photometric observations of HD80606 and HD80607 (J=7.7 and 7.8) in the Y band shows that differential photometry to a precision of 415 ppm (0.45 mmag) hr^-0.5 is achieved with an effective telescope aperture of 0.25 m. Next-generation InGaAs detectors should indeed enable Poisson-limited photometry of brighter dwarfs with particular advantage for late-M and L types. In addition, one might acquire near-infrared photometry simultaneously with optical photometry or radial velocity measurements to maximize the return of exoplanet searches with small telescopes., Comment: Accepted to PASP

We present Spitzer/IRAC 4.5-micron transit photometry of GJ3470b, a Neptune-size planet orbiting a M1.5 dwarf star with a 3.3-day period recently discovered in the course of the HARPS M-dwarf survey. We refine the stellar parameters by employing purely empirical mass-luminosity and surface brightness relations constrained by our updated value for the mean stellar density, and additional information from new near-infrared spectroscopic observations. We derive a stellar mass of M_star = 0.539+0.047-0.043 M_sun and a radius of R_star = 0.568+0.037-0.031 R_sun. We determine the host star of GJ3470b to be metal-rich, with a metallicity of [Fe/H] = +0.20 +/- 0.10 and an effective temperature of Teff = 3600 +/- 100 K. The revised stellar parameters yield a planetary radius R_pl = 4.83+0.22-0.21 R_Earth that is 13 percent larger than the value previously reported in the literature. We find a planetary mass M_pl = 13.9+1.5-1.4 M_Earth that translates to a very low planetary density, rho_pl = 0.72+0.13-0.12 gcm-3, which is 33% smaller than the original value. With a mean density half of that of GJ436b, GJ3470b is an example of a very low-density low-mass planet, similar to Kepler-11d, Kepler-11e, and Kepler-18c but orbiting a much brighter nearby star that is more conducive to follow-up studies., Comment: 9 pages and 6 figures. In typical astrophysical environments, the abundance of heavy elements ranges from 0.001 to 2 times the solar concentration. Lower abundances have been seen in select stars in the Milky Way's halo and in two quasar absorption systems at redshift z=3. These are widely interpreted as relics from the early universe, when all gas possessed a primordial chemistry. Before now there have been no direct abundance measurements from the first Gyr after the Big Bang, when the earliest stars began synthesizing elements. Here we report observations of hydrogen and heavy element absorption in a quasar spectrum at z=7.04, when the universe was just 772 Myr old (5.6% its present age). We detect a large column of neutral hydrogen but no corresponding heavy elements, limiting the chemical abundance to less than 1/10,000 the solar level if the gas is in a gravitationally bound protogalaxy, or less than 1/1,000 solar if it is diffuse and unbound. If the absorption is truly intergalactic, it would imply that the universe was neither ionized by starlight nor chemically enriched in this neighborhood at z~7. If it is gravitationally bound, the inferred abundance is too low to promote efficient cooling, and the system would be a viable site to form the predicted but as-yet unobserved massive population III stars in the early universe., Comment: Accepted for publication in Nature (6 December 2012). We characterize the near-IR sky background from 308 observations with the FIRE spectrograph at Magellan. A subset of 105 observations selected to minimize lunar and thermal effects gives a continuous, median spectrum from 0.83 to 2.5 microns which we present in electronic form. The data are used to characterize the broadband continuum emission between atmospheric OH features and correlate its properties with observing conditions such as lunar angle and time of night. We find that the moon contributes significantly to the inter-line continuum in the Y and J bands whereas the observed H band continuum is dominated by the blended Lorentzian wings of multiple OH line profiles even at R=6000. Lunar effects may be mitigated in Y and J through careful scheduling of observations, but the most ambitious near-IR programs will benefit from allocation during dark observing time if those observations are not limited by read noise. In Y and J our measured continuum exceeds space-based average estimates of the Zodiacal light, but it is not readily identified with known terrestrial foregrounds. If further measurements confirm such a fundamental background, it would impact requirements for OH-suppressed instruments operating in this regime., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures, accepted to PASP
