For every given $\beta<0$, we study the problem of maximizing the first Robin eigenvalue of the Laplacian $\lambda_\beta(\Omega)$ among convex (not necessarily smooth) sets $\Omega\subset\mathbb{S}^{n}$ with fixed perimeter. In particular, denoting by $\sigma_n$ the perimeter of the $n$-dimensional hemisphere, we show that for fixed perimeters $P<\sigma_n$, geodesic balls maximize the eigenvalue. Moreover, we prove a quantitative stability result for this isoperimetric inequality in terms of volume difference between $\Omega$ and the ball $D$ of the same perimeter.

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. In this paper, we establish a comparison principle in terms of Lorentz norms and point-wise inequalities between a positive solution $u$ to the Poisson equation with non-homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions and a specific positive solution $v$ to the Schwartz symmetrized problem, which is related to $u$ through an additional boundary condition.

An $\mathbb{F}_q$- linear set $L=L_U$ of $\Lambda=\mathrm{PG}(V, \mathbb{F}_{q^n}) \cong \mathrm{PG}(r-1,q^n)$ is a set of points defined by non-zero vectors of an $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspace $U$ of $V$. The integer $\dim_{\mathbb{F}_q} U$ is called the rank of $L$. In [G. Lunardon, O. Polverino: Translation ovoids of orthogonal polar spaces. Forum Math. 16 (2004)], it was proven that any $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear set $L$ of $\Lambda$ of rank $u$ such that $\langle L \rangle=\Lambda$ is either a canonical subgeometry of $\Lambda$ or there are a $(u-r-1)$-dimensional subspace $\Gamma$ of $\mathrm{PG}(u-1,q^n) \supset \Lambda$ disjoint from $\Lambda$ and a canonical subgeometry $\Sigma \cong \mathrm{PG}(u-1,q)$ disjoint from $\Gamma$ such that $L$ is the projection of $\Sigma$ from $\Gamma$ onto $\Lambda$. The subspace $\Gamma$ is called the vertex of the projection. In this article, we will show a method to reconstruct the vertex $\Gamma$ for a peculiar class of linear sets of rank $u = n(r - 1)$ in $\mathrm{PG}(r - 1, q^n)$ called evasive linear sets. Also, we will use this result to characterize some families of linear sets of the projective line $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ introduced from 2018 onward, by means of certain properties of their projection vertices, as done in [B. Csajb\'{o}k, C. Zanella: On scattered linear sets of pseudoregulus type in $\mathrm{PG}(1, q^t)$, Finite Fields Appl. 41 (2016)] and in [C. Zanella, F. Zullo: Vertex properties of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1, q^n)$. Discrete Math. 343(5) (2020)].

Quantum computing represents a cutting-edge frontier in artificial intelligence. It makes use of hybrid quantum-classical computation which tries to leverage quantum mechanic principles that allow us to use a different approach to deep learning classification problems. The work presented here falls within the context of the AGILE space mission, launched in 2007 by the Italian Space Agency. We implement different Quantum Convolutional Neural Networks (QCNN) that analyze data acquired by the instruments onboard AGILE to detect Gamma-Ray Bursts from sky maps or light curves. We use several frameworks such as TensorFlow-Quantum, Qiskit and PennyLane to simulate a quantum computer. The aim of this paper is to study supersoluble skew braces, a class of skew braces that encompasses all finite skew braces of square-free order. It turns out that finite supersoluble skew braces have Sylow towers, and that in an arbitrary supersoluble skew brace $B$ many relevant skew brace-theoretical properties are easier to identify: for example, a centrally nilpotent ideal of $B$ is $B$-centrally nilpotent, a fact that simplifies the computational search for the Fitting ideal; also, $B$ has finite multipermutational level if and only if $(B,+)$ is nilpotent. Given a finite presentation of the structure skew brace $G(X,r)$ associated with a finite non-degenerate solution of the Yang--Baxter Equation (YBE), there is an algorithm that decides if $G(X,r)$ is supersoluble or not. In this paper, we prove a Serrin-type result for an elliptic system of equations, overdetermined with both Dirichlet and a generalized Neumann conditions. With this tool, we characterize the critical shapes under volume constraint of some domain functionals.

The subgroup lattice of a group is a great source of information about the structure of the group itself. The aim of this paper is to use a similar tool for studying profinite groups. In more detail, we study the lattices of closed or open subgroups of a profinite group and its relation with the whole group. We show, for example, that procyclic groups are the only profinite groups with a distributive lattice of closed or open subgroups, and we give a sharp characterization of profinite groups whose lattice of closed (or open) subgroups satisfies the Dedekind modular law; we actually give a precise description of the behaviour of modular elements of the lattice of closed subgroups. We also deal with the problem of carrying some structural information from a profinite group to another one having an isomorphic lattice of closed (or open) subgroups. Some interesting consequences and related results concerning decomposability and the number of profinite groups with a given lattice of closed (or open) subgroups are also obtained., Comment: 23 pages

Methods are studied to compute the boosting effects produced by the observer motion that modifies and transfers to higher l the isotropic monopole frequency spectrum of the cosmic background. Explicit analytical solutions for spherical harmonic coefficients are presented and applied to various background spectra, alleviating computational effort. High l frequency spectra are led by higher order derivatives of the spectrum. Tabulated frequency spectra are computed with a relatively poor frequency resolution in comparison with the Doppler shift, calling for interpolation. They are affected by uncertainties due to intrinsic inaccuracies in modelling, observational data or limited computation accuracy, propagate and increase with the derivative order, possibly preventing a trustworthy computation to higher l and of the observed monopole. We filter the original function and the multipole spectra to derive reliable predictions of the harmonic coefficients. For spectra expressed in Taylor series, we derive explicit solutions for the harmonic coefficients up to l=6 in terms of spectra derivatives. We consider filters and study the quality of these methods on suitable analytical approximations, polluted with simulated noise. We consider the extragalactic sources microwave background from radio loud AGN and the 21cm line superimposed to the CMB. Gaussian pre-filtering coupled to a real space filtering of derivatives allows accurate predictions up to l=6, while log-log polynomial representation gives accurate solutions at any l. Describing the 21 cm model variety is difficult, so it is relevant to relax assumptions. Pre-filtering gives accurate predictions up to l=3-4, while further filtering or boosting amplification/deamplification method improves the results allowing reasonable estimations. Nipotency of skew braces is related to certain types of solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. This paper delves into the study of centrally nilpotent skew braces. In particular, we study their torsion theory (Section 4.1) and we introduce an "index" for subbraces (Section 4.2), but we also show that the product of centrally nilpotent ideals need not be centrally nilpotent (Example B), a rather peculiar fact. To cope with these examples, we introduce a special type of nilpotent ideal, using which, we define a {\it good} Fitting ideal. Also, a Frattini ideal is defined and its relationship with the Fitting ideal is investigated. A key ingredient in our work is the characterisation of the commutator of ideals in terms of absorbing polynomials (Section 3); this solves Problem 3.4 of arXiv:2109.04389. Let $\sigma=\{\sigma_j\,:\, j\in J\}$ be a partition of the set $\mathbb{P}$ of all prime numbers. A subgroup $X$ of a finite group $G$ is~\textit{$\sigma$-subnormal} in $G$ if there exists a chain of subgroups $$X=X_0\leq X_1\leq\ldots\leq X_n=G$$ such that, for each $1\leq i\leq n-1$, $X_{i-1}\trianglelefteq X_i$ or $X_i/(X_{i-1})_{X_i}$ is a $\sigma_{j_i}$-group for some $j_i\in J$. Skiba~[12] studied the main properties of $\sigma$-subnormal subgroups in finite groups and showed that the set of all $\sigma$-subnormal subgroups plays a relevant role in the structure of a finite soluble group. In [5], we laid the foundation of a general theory of $\sigma$-subnormal subgroups (and $\sigma$-series) in locally finite groups. It turns out that the main difference between the finite and the locally finite case concerns the behaviour of the join of $\sigma$-subnormal subgroups: in finite groups, $\sigma$-subnormal subgroups form a sublattice of the lattice of all subgroups [3], but this is no longer true for arbitrary locally finite groups. This is similar to what happens with subnormal subgroups, so it makes sense to study the class $\mathfrak{S}_\sigma^\infty$ (resp. $\mathfrak{S}_\sigma$) of locally finite groups in which the join of (resp. of finitely many) $\sigma$-subnormal subgroups is $\sigma$-subnormal. Our aim is to study how much one can extend a group in one of these classes before going outside the same class (see for example Theorems~3.6, 3.8, 5.5 and 5.7). Also, $\sigma$-subnormality criteria for the join of $\sigma$-subnormal subgroups are obtained: similarly to a celebrated theorem of Williams (see [15]), we give a necessary and sufficient conditions for a join of two $\sigma$-subnormal subgroups to always be $\sigma$-subnormal; consequently, we show that the join of two orthogonal $\sigma$-subnormal subgroups is $\sigma$-subnormal (extending a result of Roseblade [11])., Comment: 26pp

By exploiting the connection between scattered $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^3$ and minimal non degenerate $3$-dimensional rank metric codes of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^{n}$, $n \geq m+2$, described in [2], we will exhibit a new class of codes with parameters $[m+2,3,m-2]_{q^m/q}$ for infinite values of $q$ and $m \geq 5$ odd. Moreover, by studying the geometric structures of these scattered subspaces, we determine the rank weight distribution of the associated codes.

Seafloor deformation monitoring is now performed in the marine sector of the Campi Flegrei volcanic area. MEDUSA infrastructure consists of 4 buoys at depths of 40-96m equipped with cGPS receivers, accelerometers and magnetic compasses to monitor buoy status and a seafloor module with a bottom pressure recorder. We study the seafloor deformation in the caldera. Previously we show that cGPS onland network and MEDUSA timeseries for the years 2017-2020 are in agreement with the deformation predicted by a Mogi model describing the observed deformation of an active volcano. Only for buoy A data differ significantly from model, at 6.9sigma and 23.7sigma for the horizontal speed (v) and direction. We devised a new method to reconstruct the sea bottom displacement including cGPS and compass data. The method, applied to buoy A and validated also on C, uses compass data to correct cGPS positions accounting for pole inclination. Including systematic errors, the internal consistency, within 3sigma (2sigma) for the speed (angle), between the results derived for different maximum inclinations of the buoy pole up to 3.5deg shows that the method allows to significantly reduce the impact of the pole inclination which can alter the estimation. We find good convergence of the velocity and deformation angle for increasing values of the buoy pole inclination. We found v=3.521+-0.039(stat)+-0.352(syst)cm/yr and an angle -115.159+-0.670(stat)+-7.630(syst)deg. The relative impact of potential systematics (statistical) effects increases (decreases) with cutoff. Our analysis gives v consistent with Mogi at 5.2sigma(stat) or 0.5sigma(stat and syst), and a deformation angle consistent at 4.3sigma(stat) or at 0.3sigma. The module of the vectorial difference between v from the data and Mogi diminishes by a factor 7.65+-1.23(stat) or +-5.78(stat+syst) compared with previous work. We are interested in the thermal insulation of a bounded open set $\Omega$ surrounded by a set whose thickness is locally described by $\varepsilon h$, where $h$ is a non-negative function defined on the boundary $\partial\Omega$. We study the problem in the limit for $\varepsilon$ going to zero using a first-order asymptotic development by $\Gamma$-convergence.

In this paper, we introduce a symmetrization technique for the gradient of a $\BV$ function, which separates its absolutely continuous part from its singular part (sum of the jump and the Cantorian part). In particular, we prove an $\text{\emph{L}}^{\text{1}}$ comparison between the function and its symmetrized. Furthermore, we apply this result to obtain Saint-Venant type inequalities for some geometric functionals.

If $(X,r)$ is a finite non-degenerate set-theoretic solution of the Yang--Baxter equation, the additive group of the structure skew brace $G(X,r)$ is an $FC$-group, i.e. a group whose elements have finitely many conjugates. Moreover, its multiplicative group is virtually abelian, so it is also close to an $FC$-group itself. If one additionally assumes that the derived solution of $(X,r)$ is indecomposable, then for every element $b$ of $G(X,r)$ there are finitely many elements of the form $b*c$ and $c*b$, with $c\in G(X,r)$. This naturally leads to the study of a brace-theoretic analogue of the class of $FC$-groups. For this class of skew braces, the fundamental results and their connections with the solutions of the YBE are described: we prove that they have good torsion and radical theories and they behave well with respect to certain nilpotency concepts and finite generation., Comment: 24 pages. In [A. Neri, P. Santonastaso, F. Zullo. Extending two families of maximum rank distance codes], the authors extended the family of $2$-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2t}}$-linear MRD codes recently found in [G. Longobardi, G. Marino, R. Trombetti, Y. Zhou. A large family of maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ and their associated MRD codes]. Also, for $t \geq 5$ they determined equivalence classes of the elements in this new family and provided the exact number of inequivalent codes in it. In this article, we complete the study of the equivalence issue removing the restriction $t \geq 5$. Moreover, we prove that in the case when $t=4$, the linear sets of the projective line $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^{8})$ ensuing from codes in the relevant family, are not equivalent to any one known so far.

By means of a suitable weighted rearrangement, we obtain various apriori bounds for the solutions to a Robin problem. Among other things, we derive a family of Faber-Krahn type inequalities.

We study the thermal insulation of a bounded body $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, under a prescribed heat source $f>0$, via a bulk layer of insulating material. We consider a model of heat transfer between the insulated body and the environment determined by convection; this corresponds to Robin boundary conditions on the free boundary of the layer. We show that a minimal configuration exists and that it satisfies uniform density estimates.

We revisit and extend the connections between $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$-linear rank-metric codes and evasive $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^k$. We give a unifying framework in which we prove in an elementary way how the parameters of a rank-metric code are related to special geometric properties of the associated evasive subspace, with a particular focus on the generalized rank weights. In this way, we can also provide alternative and very short proofs of known results on scattered subspaces. We then use this simplified point of view in order to get a geometric characterization of near MRD codes and a clear bound on their maximal length. Finally we connect the theory of quasi-MRD codes with $h$-scattered subspaces of maximum dimension, extending to all the parameters sets the already known results on MRD codes., Comment: 20 pages

The aim of this short note is to provide a proof to a statement of Sierpi\'nski concerning the number of possible sums of a series (of type $\lambda<\aleph_1$) of arbitrary ordinal numbers.

We study a shape optimization problem involving a solid $K\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ that is maintained at constant temperature and is enveloped by a layer of insulating material $\Omega$ which obeys a generalized boundary heat transfer law. We minimize the energy of such configurations among all $(K,\Omega)$ with prescribed measure for $K$ and $\Omega$, and no topological or geometrical constraints. In the convection case (corresponding to Robin boundary conditions on $\partial\Omega$) we obtain a full description of minimizers, while for general heat transfer conditions, we prove the existence and regularity of solutions and give a partial description of minimizers.

We study the behaviour, when $p \to +\infty$, of the first $p$-Laplacian eigenvalues with Robin boundary conditions and the limit of the associated eigenfunctions. We prove that the limit of the eigenfunctions is a viscosity solution to an eigenvalue problem for the so-called $\infty$-Laplacian.

In this paper we study the $\Gamma$-limit, as $p\to 1$, of the functional $$ J_{p}(u)=\frac{\displaystyle\int_\Omega |\nabla u|^p + \beta\int_{ \partial \Omega} |u|^p}{\displaystyle \int_\Omega |u|^p}, $$ where $\Omega$ is a smooth bounded open set in $\mathbb R^{N}$, $p>1$ and $\beta$ is a real number. Among our results, for $\beta >-1$, we derive an isoperimetric inequality for \[ \Lambda(\Omega,\beta)=\inf_{u \in BV(\Omega), u\not \equiv 0} \frac{\displaystyle |Du|(\Omega) + \min(\beta,1)\int_{ \partial \Omega} |u|}{\displaystyle \int_\Omega |u|} \] which is the limit as $p\to 1^{+}$ of $ \lambda(\Omega,p,\beta)= \displaystyle \min_{u\in W^{1,p}(\Omega)} J_{p}(u). $ We show that among all bounded and smooth open sets with given volume, the ball maximizes $\Lambda(\Omega, \beta)$ when $\beta \in$ $(-1,0)$ and minimizes $\Lambda(\Omega, \beta)$ when $\beta \in[0, \infty)$.

Artificial Neuronal Networks are models widely used for many scientific tasks. One of the well-known field of application is the approximation of high-dimensional problems via Deep Learning. In the present paper we investigate the Deep Learning techniques applied to Shape Functionals, and we start from the so--called Torsional Rigidity. Our aim is to feed the Neuronal Network with digital approximations of the planar domains where the Torsion problem (a partial differential equation problem) is defined, and look for a prediction of the value of Torsion. Dealing with images, our choice fell on Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), and we train such a network using reference solutions obtained via Finite Element Method. Then, we tested the network against some well-known properties involving the Torsion as well as an old standing conjecture. In all cases, good approximation properties and accuracies occurred.

In this paper we provide a comparison result between the solutions to the torsion problem for the Hermite operator with Robin boundary conditions and the one of a suitable symmetrized problem.

The Planck sub-mm surveys detected the brightest strongly gravitationally lensed dusty galaxies in the sky. The combination of their extreme gravitational flux boosting and image stretching offers the unique possibility of measuring in detail, via high-resolution imaging and spectroscopic follow-up, the galaxy structure and kinematics in early evolutionary phases, thus gaining otherwise unaccessible direct information on physical processes in action. The extraction of candidate strongly lensed galaxies (SLGs) from Planck catalogues is hindered by the fact that they are generally detected with poor S/N, except for the few brightest ones, their photometric properties are strongly blurred and they are difficult to single out. We devised a method to increase by a factor of 3 to 4 the number of identified Planck-detected SLGs, although with an unavoidably limited efficiency. Our approach uses the fact that SLGs have sub-mm colours colder than nearby dusty galaxies (the large majority of Planck extragalactic sources). The sub-mm colours of the 47 confirmed or very likely Planck-detected SLGs are used to estimate the colour range of these objects. Moreover, most nearby galaxies and radio sources can be picked up by cross-matching with IRAS and PCNT catalogues, respectively. We present samples of 177, 97, 104 lensed candidates at 545, 857, 353 GHz, respectively. The efficiency of our approach, tested on the SPT survey covering 2,500 sq. deg., is estimated to be of 30%-40%. We also discuss stricter selection criteria increasing efficiency to 50% but with a somewhat lower completeness. Our analysis of SPT data has identified a dozen of galaxies that can be reliably considered previously unrecognized Planck-detected SLGs. Extrapolating the number of Planck-detected confirmed or very likely SLGs found within the SPT and H-ATLAS areas, we expect from 150 to 190 such sources over the|b|>20deg sky., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables, 1 Appendix. We aim at assessing the states of the nodes in a network by means of end-to-end monitoring paths. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we consider a static failure scenario. In this context, we aim at minimizing the number of probes to obtain failure identification. To face this problem, we propose a progressive approach to failure localization based on stochastic optimization, whose solution is the optimal sequence of monitoring paths to probe. We address the complexity of the problem by proposing a greedy strategy in two variants: one considers exact calculation of posterior probabilities of node failures, given the observation, whereas the other approximates these values by means of a novel failure centrality metric. Secondly, we adapt these two strategies to a dynamic failure scenario where nodes states can change throughout a monitoring period. By means of numerical experiments conducted on real network topologies, we demonstrate the practical applicability of our approach. Our performance evaluation evidences the superiority of our algorithms with respect to state of the art solutions based on classic Boolean Network Tomography as well as approaches based on sequential group testing.

The concept of linear set in projective spaces over finite fields was introduced by Lunardon in 1999 and it plays central roles in the study of blocking sets, semifields, rank-distance codes and etc. A linear set with the largest possible cardinality and rank is called maximum scattered. Despite two decades of study, there are only a limited number of maximum scattered linear sets of a line $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$. In this paper, we provide a large family of new maximum scattered linear sets over $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ for any even $n\geq 6$ and odd $q$. In particular, the relevant family contains at least \[ \begin{cases} \left\lfloor\frac{q^t+1}{8rt}\right\rfloor,& \text{ if }t\not\equiv 2\pmod{4};\\[8pt] \left\lfloor\frac{q^t+1}{4rt(q^2+1)}\right\rfloor,& \text{ if }t\equiv 2\pmod{4}, \end{cases} \] inequivalent members for given $q=p^r$ and $n=2t>8$, where $p=\mathrm{char}(\mathbb{F}_q)$. This is a great improvement of previous results: for given $q$ and $n>8$, the number of inequivalent maximum scattered linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n)$ in all classes known so far, is smaller than $q^2$. Moreover, we show that there are a large number of new maximum rank-distance codes arising from the constructed linear sets.

We describe an extension of the most recent version of the Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources (PCCS2), produced using a new multi-band Bayesian Extraction and Estimation Package (BeeP). BeeP assumes that the compact sources present in PCCS2 at 857 GHz have a dust-like spectral energy distribution, which leads to emission at both lower and higher frequencies, and adjusts the parameters of the source and its SED to fit the emission observed in Planck's three highest frequency channels at 353, 545, and 857 GHz, as well as the IRIS map at 3000 GHz. In order to reduce confusion regarding diffuse cirrus emission, BeeP's data model includes a description of the background emission surrounding each source, and it adjusts the confidence in the source parameter extraction based on the statistical properties of the spatial distribution of the background emission. BeeP produces the following three new sets of parameters for each source: (a) fits to a modified blackbody (MBB) thermal emission model of the source; (b) SED-independent source flux densities at each frequency considered; and (c) fits to an MBB model of the background in which the source is embedded. BeeP also calculates, for each source, a reliability parameter, which takes into account confusion due to the surrounding cirrus. We define a high-reliability subset (BeeP/base), containing 26 083 sources (54.1 per cent of the total PCCS2 catalogue), the majority of which have no information on reliability in the PCCS2. The results of the BeeP extension of PCCS2, which are made publicly available via the PLA, will enable the study of the thermal properties of well-defined samples of compact Galactic and extra-galactic dusty sources., Comment: 55 pages. In this article, constant dimension subspace codes whose codewords have subspace distance in a prescribed set of integers, are considered. The easiest example of such an object is a {\it junta}; i.e. a subspace code in which all codewords go through a common subspace. We focus on the case when only two intersection values for the codewords, are assigned. In such a case we determine an upper bound for the dimension of the vector space spanned by the elements of a non-junta code. In addition, if the two intersection values are consecutive, we prove that such a bound is tight, and classify the examples attaining the largest possible dimension as one of four infinite families.

We show, using symmetrization techniques, that it is possible to prove a comparison principle (we are mainly focused on $L^1$ comparison) between solutions to an elliptic partial differential equation on a smooth bounded set $\Omega$ with a rather general boundary condition, and solutions to a suitable related problem defined on a ball having the same volume as $\Omega$. This includes for instance mixed problems where Dirichlet boundary conditions are prescribed on part of the boundary, while Robin boundary conditions are prescribed on its complement.

We study thermal insulating of a bounded body $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^n$. Under a prescribed heat source $f\geq 0$, we consider a model of heat transfer between $\Omega$ and the environment determined by convection; this corresponds, before insulation, to Robin boundary conditions. The body is then surrounded by a layer of insulating material of thickness of size $\varepsilon>0$, and whose conductivity is also proportional to $\varepsilon$. This corresponds to the case of a small amount of insulating material, with excellent insulating properties. We then compute the $\Gamma$-limit of the energy functional $F_\varepsilon$ and prove that this is a functional $F$ whose minimizers still satisfy an elliptic PDEs system with a non uniform Robin boundary condition depending on the distribution of insulating layer around $\Omega$. In a second step we study the maximization of heat content (which measures the goodness of the insulation) among all the possible distributions of insulating material with fixed mass, and prove an optimal upper bound in terms of geometric properties. Eventually we prove a conjecture which states that the ball surrounded by a uniform distribution of insulating material maximizes the heat content.

We present the NPIPE processing pipeline, which produces calibrated frequency maps in temperature and polarization from data from the Planck Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) and High Frequency Instrument (HFI) using high-performance computers. NPIPE represents a natural evolution of previous Planck analysis efforts, and combines some of the most powerful features of the separate LFI and HFI analysis pipelines. The net effect of the improvements is lower levels of noise and systematics in both frequency and component maps at essentially all angular scales, as well as notably improved internal consistency between the various frequency channels. Based on the NPIPE maps, we present the first estimate of the Solar dipole determined through component separation across all nine Planck frequencies. The amplitude is ($3366.6 \pm 2.7$)$\mu$K, consistent with, albeit slightly higher than, earlier estimates. From the large-scale polarization data, we derive an updated estimate of the optical depth of reionization of $\tau = 0.051 \pm 0.006$, which appears robust with respect to data and sky cuts. There are 600 complete signal, noise and systematics simulations of the full-frequency and detector-set maps. As a Planck first, these simulations include full time-domain processing of the beam-convolved CMB anisotropies. The observer peculiar motion produces boosting effects in the background anisotropies with frequency spectral behaviours related to its spectrum. We study how the frequency spectrum of the background isotropic monopole emission is modified and transferred to the frequency spectra at higher multipoles, l. We perform the analysis in terms of spherical harmonic expansion up to a certain lmax, for various models from radio to far-IR. We derive a system of linear equations to obtain spherical harmonic coefficients and provide explicit solutions up to lmax=6 as linear combinations of the signals at N=lmax+1 colatitudes. The associated Legendre polynomials symmetry with respect to {\pi}/2 is used to separate the system into two subsystems, one for l=0 and even l, the other for odd l. This improves the solutions accuracy with respect to an arbitrary colatitudes choice. We apply the method to analytical or semi-analytical representions of monopole spectra, i.e. to four types of CMB distortions, four types of extragalactic backgrounds superimposed to the CMB Planckian spectrum and some combinations of them. We present our results in terms of spherical harmonic coefficients, relationships between the observed and intrinsic monopoles, maps, angular power spectra. We compare the method results with the ones obtained using more computationally demanding numerical integrations or map generation/inversion. The method is generalized to include the effect of the observer motion relative to the Sun. Its simplicity and efficiency can significantly alleviate the computational effort needed for accurate predictions and for the analysis of future data. In this paper we consider a minimization problem which arises from thermal insulation. A compact connected set $K$, which represents a conductor of constant temperature, say $1$, is thermally insulated by surrounding it with a layer of thermal insulator, the open set $\Omega\setminus K$ with $K\subset\bar\Omega$. The heat dispersion is then obtained as \[ \inf\left\{ \int_{\Omega}|\nabla \varphi|^{2}dx +\beta\int_{\partial^{*}\Omega}\varphi^{2}d\mathcal H^{n-1} ,\;\varphi\in H^{1}(\mathbb R^{n}), \, \varphi\ge 1\text{ in } K\right\}, \] for some positive constant $\beta$. We mostly restrict our analysis to the case of an insulating layer of constant thickness. We let the set $K$ vary, under prescribed geometrical constraints, and we look for the best (or worst) geometry in terms of heat dispersion. We show that under perimeter constraint the disk in two dimensions is the worst one. The same is true for the ball in higher dimension but under different constraints. We finally discuss few open problems.

Let $V$ denote an $r$-dimensional vector space over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$, the finite field of $q^n$ elements. Then $V$ is also an $rn$-dimension vector space over $\mathbb{F}_q$. An $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspace $U$ of $V$ is $(h,k)_q$-evasive if it meets the $h$-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-subspaces of $V$ in $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of dimension at most $k$. The $(1,1)_q$-evasive subspaces are known as scattered and they have been intensively studied in finite geometry, their maximum size has been proved to be $\lfloor rn/2 \rfloor$ when $rn$ is even or $n=3$. We investigate the maximum size of $(h,k)_q$-evasive subspaces, study two duality relations among them and provide various constructions. In particular, we present the first examples, for infinitely many values of $q$, of maximum scattered subspaces when $r=3$ and $n=5$. The largest temperature anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is the dipole, which has been measured with increasing accuracy for more than three decades, particularly with the Planck satellite. The simplest interpretation of the dipole is that it is due to our motion with respect to the rest frame of the CMB. Since current CMB experiments infer temperature anisotropies from angular intensity variations, the dipole modulates the temperature anisotropies with the same frequency dependence as the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect. We present the first, and significant, detection of this signal in the tSZ maps and find that it is consistent with direct measurements of the CMB dipole, as expected. The signal contributes power in the tSZ maps, which is modulated in a quadrupolar pattern, and we estimate its contribution to the tSZ bispectrum, noting that it contributes negligible noise to the bispectrum at relevant scales., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. More precisely, in the space $\mathrm{H}_n(q^2)$ of Hermitian matrices over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}$ we have two possible equivalence: the classical one coming from the maps that preserve the rank in $\mathbb{F}_{q^2}^{n\times n}$, and the one that comes from restricting to those maps preserving both the rank and the space $\mathrm{H}_n(q^2)$. Comparison results of Talenti type for Elliptic Problems with Dirichlet boundary conditions have been widely investigated in the last decades. In this paper, we deal with Robin boundary conditions. Surprisingly, contrary to the Dirichlet case, Robin boundary conditions make the comparison sensitive to the dimension, and while the planar case seems to be completely settled, in higher dimensions some open problems are yet unsolved.

This paper discusses the science case for a sensitive spectro-polarimetric survey of the microwave sky. Such a survey would provide a tomographic and dynamic census of the three-dimensional distribution of hot gas, velocity flows, early metals, dust, and mass distribution in the entire Hubble volume, exploit CMB temperature and polarisation anisotropies down to fundamental limits, and track energy injection and absorption into the radiation background across cosmic times by measuring spectral distortions of the CMB blackbody emission. In addition to its exceptional capability for cosmology and fundamental physics, such a survey would provide an unprecedented view of microwave emissions at sub-arcminute to few-arcminute angular resolution in hundreds of frequency channels, a data set that would be of immense legacy value for many branches of astrophysics. We propose that this survey be carried-out with a large space mission featuring a broad-band polarised imager and a moderate resolution spectro-imager at the focus of a 3.5m aperture telescope actively cooled to about 8K, complemented with absolutely-calibrated Fourier Transform Spectrometer modules observing at degree-scale angular resolution in the 10-2000 GHz frequency range. The cosmic background radiation has been observed to deviate from the Planck law expected from a blackbody at $\sim$ 2.7 K at frequencies below $\sim 3$ GHz. We discuss the abundance of the low-energy photons from the perspective of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. We propose a mechanism of stochastic frequency-diffusion, the counterpart to stochastic acceleration for charged particles in a turbulent plasma, to modify the standard Kompaneets equation. The resulting violation of the Einstein relation allows to take advantage of low-frequency localization and finally leads to photon cooling. The new equation predicts a frequency distribution in agreement with the absolute temperature measurements of the cosmic background radiation down to about 20 MHz, for which we offer here an updated compilation. In that sense, the so called 'space roar' we observe today is interpreted as a nonequilibrium echo of the early universe, and of nonequilibrium conditions in the primordial plasma more specifically., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. The cosmological reionization can be studied in the radio through the tomographic view offered by the redshifted 21-cm line and the integrated information carried out by the diffuse free-free emission, coupled to the Comptonization distortion, relevant at higher frequencies. Current predictions span a wide range of possibilities, while the recent EDGES observations disagree with the standard models and call, if confirmed, for non-standard physical processes and/or for an early population of extragalactic sources producing a remarkable background at high redshifts almost consistent with the ARCADE 2 claim of a significant excess of CMB absolute temperature at low frequency. These signatures can be observed in global signal and fluctuations, from very large to small angular scales. The observer peculiar motion with respect to a reference frame in rest with respect to the CMB produces boosting effects in various observable quantities, remarkable at low multipoles, and particularly in the dipole, with frequency spectral behaviours depending on the monopole emission spectrum. We present a novel investigation at radio frequencies, aimed at predicting the imprints expected in the redshifted 21-cm line signal and in the diffuse free-free emission plus the Comptonization distortion for several models. Furthermore, we consider the same type of signal but expected from the cosmological radio background determining the offset for 21-cm line. The combination of these signals and their relevance in the various frequency ranges are studied. This approach, linking monopole and anisotropy analyses, can be applied on wide sky coverage surveys as well as to sets of sky patches. This paper describes the 2018 Planck CMB likelihoods, following a hybrid approach similar to the 2015 one, with different approximations at low and high multipoles, and implementing several methodological and analysis refinements. With more realistic simulations, and better correction and modelling of systematics, we can now make full use of the High Frequency Instrument polarization data. The low-multipole 100x143 GHz EE cross-spectrum constrains the reionization optical-depth parameter $\tau$ to better than 15% (in combination with with the other low- and high-$\ell$ likelihoods). We also update the 2015 baseline low-$\ell$ joint TEB likelihood based on the Low Frequency Instrument data, which provides a weaker $\tau$ constraint. At high multipoles, a better model of the temperature-to-polarization leakage and corrections for the effective calibrations of the polarization channels (polarization efficiency or PE) allow us to fully use the polarization spectra, improving the constraints on the $\Lambda$CDM parameters by 20 to 30% compared to TT-only constraints. Tests on the modelling of the polarization demonstrate good consistency, with some residual modelling uncertainties, the accuracy of the PE modelling being the main limitation. Using our various tests, simulations, and comparison between different high-$\ell$ implementations, we estimate the consistency of the results to be better than the 0.5$\sigma$ level. Minor curiosities already present before (differences between $\ell$<800 and $\ell$>800 parameters or the preference for more smoothing of the $C_\ell$ peaks) are shown to be driven by the TT power spectrum and are not significantly modified by the inclusion of polarization. Overall, the legacy Planck CMB likelihoods provide a robust tool for constraining the cosmological model and represent a reference for future CMB observations. Planck, SPT and ACT surveys have clearly demonstrated that Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments, while optimised for cosmological measurements, have made important contributions to the field of extragalactic astrophysics in the last decade. Future CMB experiments have the potential to make even greater contributions. One example is the detection of high-z galaxies with extreme gravitational amplifications. The combination of flux boosting and of stretching of the images has allowed the investigation of the structure of galaxies at z ~3 with the astounding spatial resolution of about 60 pc. Another example is the detection of proto-clusters of dusty galaxies at high z when they may not yet possess the hot intergalactic medium allowing their detection in X-rays or via the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. Next generation CMB experiments, like PICO, CORE, CMB-Bharat from space and Simons Observatory and CMB-S4 from the ground, will discover several thousands of strongly lensed galaxies out to z~6 or more and of galaxy proto-clusters caught in the phase when their member galaxies where forming the bulk of their {stars. They will also detect tens of thousands of local dusty galaxies and thousands of radio sources at least up to z~5. Moreover they will measure the polarized emission of thousands of radio sources and of dusty galaxies at mm/sub-mm wavelengths., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures. Let $k,n,m \in \mathbb{Z}^+$ integers such that $k\leq n \leq m$, let $\mathrm{G}_{n,k}\in \mathbb{F}_{q^m}^n$ be a Delsarte-Gabidulin code. Wachter-Zeh proven that codes belonging to this family cannot be efficiently list decoded for any radius $\tau$, providing $\tau$ is large enough. This achievement essentially relies on proving a lower bound for the list size of some specific words in $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^n \setminus \mathrm{G}_{n,k}$. In 2016, Raviv and Wachter-Zeh improved this bound in a special case, i.e. when $n\mid m$. As a consequence, they were able to detect infinite families of Delsarte-Gabidulin codes that cannot be efficiently list decoded at all. In this article we determine similar lower bounds for Maximum Rank Distance codes belonging to a wider class of examples, containing Generalized Gabidulin codes, Generalized Twisted Gabidulin codes, and examples recently described by the first author and Yue Zhou. By exploiting arguments suchlike those used in the above mentioned papers, when $n\mid m$, we also show infinite families of generalized Gabidulin codes that cannot be list decoded efficiently at any radius greater than or equal to $\left\lfloor \frac{d-1}2 \right\rfloor+1$, where $d$ is its minimum distance. Nonetheless, in all other examples belonging to above mentioned class, we detect infinite families that cannot be list decoded efficiently at any radius greater than or equal to $\left\lfloor \frac{d-1}2 \right\rfloor+2$, where $d$ is its minimum distance. Finally, relying on the properties of a set of subspace trinomials recently presented by McGuire and Mueller, we are able to prove that any rank metric code of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^n$ of order $q^{kn}$ with $n$ dividing $m$, such that $4n-3$ is a square in $\mathbb{Z}$ and containing $\mathrm{G}_{n,2}$, is not efficiently list decodable at some values of the radius $\tau$.

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimiter Array (ALMA) high sensitivity ($\sigma_P \simeq 0.4\,$mJy) polarimetric observations at $97.5\,$GHz (Band 3) of a complete sample of $32$ extragalactic radio sources drawn from the faint Planck-ATCA Co-eval Observations (PACO) sample ($b<-75^\circ$, compact sources brighter than $200\,$mJy at $20\,$GHz). We achieved a detection rate of $~97\%$ at $3\,\sigma$ (only $1$ non-detection). We complement these observations with new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) data between $2.1$ and $35\,$GHz obtained within a few months and with data published in earlier papers from our collaboration. Adding the co-eval GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison widefield array (GLEAM) survey detections between $70\,$ and $230\,$MHz for our sources, we present spectra over more than $3$ decades in frequency in total intensity and over about $1.7$ decades in polarization. The spectra of our sources are smooth over the whole frequency range, with no sign of dust emission from the host galaxy at mm wavelengths nor of a sharp high frequency decline due, for example, to electron ageing. We do however find indications of multiple emitting components and present a classification based on the number of detected components. We analyze the polarization fraction behaviour and distributions up to $97\,$GHz for different source classes.
