The novel electron spectrometry method proposed by the PTOLEMY relic neutrino experiment requires a real-time, non-destructive estimate of the parallel and transverse momentum splits of tritium $\beta$-decay electrons. The collaboration has proposed to obtain this estimate using cyclotron-radiation emission spectroscopy (CRES), in which the kinetic energy of a charged particle is determined by measuring the relativistic frequency shift of the cyclotron radiation emitted by the particle in a magnetic field. However, no suitable approach to extract this information in a non-destructive manner has been developed to date. In this paper, we characterize the performance of a configuration that can be feasibly integrated directly into the existing design for the transverse drift filter proposed by the PTOLEMY collaboration. We study a geometry incorporating a cavity resonator to enhance a ${\sim}\mathcal{O}(1) \hspace{1mm}\mathrm{fW}$ cyclotron radiation signal and derive key features of the expected observed radiation specific to our radio-frequency (RF) tracking configuration. We estimate the performance of our design using electromagnetic simulations and propose a general signal reconstruction algorithm capable of matching an observed signal to electron kinematic parameters. The projected signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of this technique suggests that a non-destructive RF tracking system based on an array of these components as building blocks is applicable for extracting the kinematic parameters of tritium endpoint electrons to the precision required for the PTOLEMY experiment., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures Corrected calculation errors in Section 8; corrected minor typos

In the reconstruction of physics events at future e$^+$e$^-$ colliders the calorimeter design has a crucial role in the overall detector performance. The reconstruction of events with many jets in their final state sets stringent requirements on the jet energy and angular resolutions. The energy resolution for jets with energy of about 45 GeV is required to be at the 4-5\% level to enable an efficient separation of the W and Z boson invariant masses. We demonstrate in this paper how such a performance can be achieved by exploiting a particle flow algorithm tailored for a hybrid dual-readout calorimeter made of segmented crystals and fibers. The excellent energy resolution and linearity of such calorimeter for both photons and neutral hadrons ($3\%/\sqrt{E}$ and $26\%/\sqrt{E}$, respectively), inherent to the homogeneous crystals and dual-readout technological choices, provides a powerful handle for the development of a new approach for particle identification and jet reconstruction. While the dual-readout particle flow algorithm (DR-PFA) presented in this paper is at its early stage of development, it already demonstrates the potential of a hybrid dual-readout calorimeter for jet reconstruction by improving the jet energy resolution with respect to a calorimeter-only reconstruction from 6.0\% to about 4.5\% for 45 GeV jets.

The Cosmic Neutrino Background (C$\nu$B) anisotropies for massive neutrinos are a unique probe of large-scale structure formation. The redshift-distance measure is completely different for massive neutrinos as compared to electromagnetic radiation. The C$\nu$B anisotropies in massive neutrinos grow in response to non-relativistic motion in gravitational potentials seeded by relatively high $k$-modes. Differences in the early phases of large-scale structure formation in Warm Dark Matter (WDM) versus Cold Dark Matter (CDM) cosmologies have an impact on the magnitude of the C$\nu$B anisotropies for contributions to the angular power spectrum that peak at high $k$-modes. We take the examples of WDM consisting of 2, 3 or 7 keV sterile neutrinos and show that the C$\nu$B anisotropies for 0.05 eV neutrinos drop off at high-$l$ multipole moment in the angular power spectrum relative to CDM. At the same angular scales that one can observe baryonic acoustical oscillations in the CMB, the C$\nu$B anisotropies begin to become sensitive to differences in WDM and CDM cosmologies. The precision measurement of high-$l$ multipoles in the C$\nu$B neutrino sky map is a potential possibility for the PTOLEMY experiment with thin film targets of spin-polarized atomic tritium superfluid that exhibit significant quantum liquid amplification for non-relativistic relic neutrino capture.

With centre-of-mass energies covering the Z pole, the WW threshold, the HZ production, and the top-pair threshold, the FCC-ee offers unprecedented possibilities to measure the properties of the four heaviest particles of the Standard Model (the Higgs, Z, and W bosons, and the top quark), and also those of the b and c quarks and of the $\tau$ lepton. At these moderate energies, the role of the calorimeters is to complement the tracking systems in an optimal (a.k.a. particle-flow) event reconstruction. In this context, precision measurements and searches for new particles can fully profit from the improved electromagnetic and hadronic object reconstruction offered by new technologies, finer transverse and longitudinal segmentation, timing capabilities, multi-signal readout, modern computing techniques and algorithms. The corresponding requirements arise in particular from the resolution on reconstructed hadronic masses, energies, and momenta, e.g., of H, W, Z, needed to reach the FCC-ee promised precision. Extreme electromagnetic energy resolutions are also instrumental for $\pi^0$ identification, $\tau$ exclusive decay reconstruction, and physics sensitivity to processes accessible via radiative return. The massive neutrinos of the Cosmic Neutrino Background (C$\nu$B) are fundamental ingredients of the radiation-dominated early universe and are important non-relativistic probes of the large-scale structure formation in the late universe. The dominant source of anisotropies in the neutrino flux distribution on the sky are highly amplified integrals of metric perturbations encountered during the non-relativistic phase of the C$\nu$B. This paper numerically compares the line-of-sight methods for computing C$\nu$B anisotropies with the Einstein-Boltzmann hierarchy solutions in linear theory for a range of neutrino masses. Angular power spectra are computed that are relevant to a future polarized tritium target run of the PTOLEMY experiment. Correlations between the C$\nu$B sky maps and galactic survey data are derived using line-of-sight techniques and discussed in the context of multi-messenger astrophysics.

Crystal calorimeters have a long history of pushing the frontier on high-resolution electromagnetic (EM) calorimetry. We explore in this paper major innovations in collider detector performance that can be achieved with crystal calorimetry when longitudinal segmentation and dual-readout capabilities are combined with a new high EM resolution approach to PFA in multi-jet events, such as $e^+e^+\rightarrow HZ$ events in all-hadronic final-states at Higgs factories. We demonstrate a new technique for pre-processing $\pi^0$ momenta through combinatoric di-photon pairing in advance of applying jet algorithms. This procedure significantly reduces $\pi^0$ photon splitting across jets in multi-jet events. The correct photon-to-jet assignment efficiency improves by a factor of 3 with a $3\%/\sqrt{E}$ EM resolution. In addition, the technique of bremsstrahlung photon recovery significantly improves electron momentum measurements. A high EM resolution calorimeter increases the Z boson recoil mass resolution in Higgstrahlung events for decays into electron pairs to 80% of that for muon pairs. We present the design and optimization of a highly segmented crystal detector concept that achieves the required energy resolution, and a time resolution better than 30 ps providing exceptional particle identification capabilities. We demonstrate that, contrary to previous detector designs that suffered from large neutral hadron resolution degradation from one interaction length of crystals in front of a sampling hadron calorimeter, the implementation of dual-readout on crystals permits to achieve a resolution better than $30\%/\sqrt{E}\oplus 2\%$ for neutral hadrons. Our studies find that the integration of crystal calorimetry into future Higgs factory collider detectors can open new perspectives by yielding the highest level of combined EM and neutral hadron resolution in the PFA paradigm.

We propose two-dimensional materials as targets for direct detection of dark matter. Using graphene as an example, we focus on the case where dark matter scattering deposits sufficient energy on a valence-band electron to eject it from the target. We show that the sensitivity of graphene to dark matter of MeV to GeV mass can be comparable, for similar exposure and background levels, to that of semiconductor targets such as silicon and germanium. Moreover, a two-dimensional target is an excellent directional detector, as the ejected electron retains information about the angular dependence of the incident dark matter particle. X-ray computed tomography (CT) has an indispensable role in constructing 3D images of objects made from light materials. However, limited by absorption coefficients, X-rays cannot deeply penetrate materials such as copper and lead. Here we show via simulation that muon beams can provide high resolution tomographic images of dense objects and of structures within the interior of dense objects. The effects of resolution broadening from multiple scattering diminish with increasing muon momentum. As the momentum of the muon increases, the contrast of the image goes down and therefore requires higher resolution in the muon spectrometer to resolve the image. The variance of the measured muon momentum reaches a minimum and then increases with increasing muon momentum. The impact of the increase in variance is to require a higher integrated muon flux to reduce fluctuations. The flux requirements and level of contrast needed for high resolution muon computed tomography are well matched to the muons produced in the pion decay pipe at a neutrino beam facility and what can be achieved for momentum resolution in a muon spectrometer. Such an imaging system can be applied in archaeology, art history, engineering, material identification and whenever there is a need to image inside a transportable object constructed of dense materials.

Neutrino capture on tritium has emerged as a promising method for detecting the cosmic neutrino background (CvB). We show that relic neutrinos are captured most readily when their spin vectors are anti-aligned with the polarization axis of the tritium nuclei and when they approach along the direction of polarization. As a result, CvB observatories may measure anisotropies in the cosmic neutrino velocity and spin distributions by polarizing the tritium targets. A small dipole anisotropy in the CvB is expected due to the peculiar velocity of the lab frame with respect to the cosmic frame and due to late-time gravitational effects. The PTOLEMY experiment, a tritium observatory currently under construction, should observe a nearly isotropic background. This would serve as a strong test of the cosmological origin of a potential signal. The polarized-target measurements may also constrain non-standard neutrino interactions that would induce larger anisotropies and help discriminate between Majorana versus Dirac neutrinos., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

The pattern of quantum numbers in the leptons and quarks indicate that precisely two fixed hypercharge splittings are observed in nature. The $|\Delta Y|=1$ splitting corresponds to the $SU(2)_L$ scalar and doublet spacing, indicative of the Yukawa interactions of the Higgs mechanism. A $|\Delta Y|=4/3$ splitting is identified between corresponding $SU(3)_C$ scalars and triplets. The properties of this splitting are the basis for the prediction of a new kind of scalar particle that directly couples quarks and leptons. Possible experimental methods for detecting a strongly interacting, charge -1$e$/3 scalar particle are presented for the examples of exotic decay modes of the top quark and the analysis of $t\bar{t}\tau^+\tau^-$ production at hadron colliders., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures
