We report on the multi-year evolution of the population of X-ray sources in the nuclear region of NGC 3621 based on Chandra, XMM-Newton and Swift observations. Among these, two sources, X1 and X5, after their first detection in 2008, seem to have faded below the detectability threshold, a most interesting fact as X1 is associated with the AGN of the galaxy. Two other sources, X3 and X6 are presented for the first time, the former showing a peculiar short-term variability in the latest available dataset, suggesting an egress from eclipse, hence belonging to the handful of known eclipsing ultra-luminous X-ray sources. One source, X4, previously known for its "heart-beat", i.e. a characteristic modulation in its signal with a period of $\approx1$ h, shows a steady behaviour in the latest observation. Finally, the brightest X-ray source in NGC 3621, here labelled X2, shows steady levels of flux across all the available datasets but a change in its spectral shape, reminiscent of the behaviours of Galactic disk-fed X-ray binaries., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, 2 appendices available online. Non-neural Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) models are often used to predict system failures in the context of industrial maintenance. However, only a few researches jointly assess the effect of varying the amount of past data used to make a prediction and the extension in the future of the forecast. This study evaluates the impact of the size of the reading window and of the prediction window on the performances of models trained to forecast failures in three data sets concerning the operation of (1) an industrial wrapping machine working in discrete sessions, (2) an industrial blood refrigerator working continuously, and (3) a nitrogen generator working continuously. The problem is formulated as a binary classification task that assigns the positive label to the prediction window based on the probability of a failure to occur in such an interval. Six algorithms (logistic regression, random forest, support vector machine, LSTM, ConvLSTM, and Transformers) are compared using multivariate telemetry time series. The results indicate that, in the considered scenarios, the dimension of the prediction windows plays a crucial role and highlight the effectiveness of DL approaches at classifying data with diverse time-dependent patterns preceding a failure and the effectiveness of ML approaches at classifying similar and repetitive patterns preceding a failure.

In both industrial and residential contexts, compressor-based machines, such as refrigerators, HVAC systems, heat pumps and chillers, are essential to fulfil production and consumers' needs. The diffusion of sensors and IoT connectivity supports the development of monitoring systems that can detect and predict faults, identify behavioural shifts and forecast the operational status of machines and their components. The focus of this paper is to survey the recent research on such tasks as FD, FP, Forecasting and CPD applied to multivariate time series characterizing the operations of compressor-based machines. These tasks play a critical role in improving the efficiency and longevity of machines by minimizing downtime and maintenance costs and improving the energy efficiency. Specifically, FD detects and diagnoses faults, FP predicts such occurrences, forecasting anticipates the future value of characteristic variables of machines and CPD identifies significant variations in the behaviour of the appliances, such as a change in the working regime. We identify and classify the approaches to the tasks mentioned above, compare the algorithms employed, highlight the gaps in the current status of the art and discuss the most promising future research directions in the field.

Gravitational lensing is the relativistic effect generated by massive bodies, which bend the space-time surrounding them. It is a deeply investigated topic in astrophysics and allows validating theoretical relativistic results and studying faint astrophysical objects that would not be visible otherwise. In recent years Machine Learning methods have been applied to support the analysis of the gravitational lensing phenomena by detecting lensing effects in data sets consisting of images associated with brightness variation time series. However, the state-of-art approaches either consider only images and neglect time-series data or achieve relatively low accuracy on the most difficult data sets. This paper introduces DeepGraviLens, a novel multi-modal network that classifies spatio-temporal data belonging to one non-lensed system type and three lensed system types. It surpasses the current state of the art accuracy results by $\approx 3\%$ to $\approx 11\%$, depending on the considered data set. Such an improvement will enable the acceleration of the analysis of lensed objects in upcoming astrophysical surveys, which will exploit the petabytes of data collected, e.g., from the Vera C. Mars exploration motivates the search for extraterrestrial life, the development of space technologies, and the design of human missions and habitations. Here we seek new insights and pose unresolved questions relating to the natural history of Mars, habitability, robotic and human exploration, planetary protection, and the impacts on human society. Key observations and findings include:(1)high escape rates of early Mars' atmosphere, including loss of water, impact present-day habitability;(2)putative fossils on Mars will likely be ambiguous biomarkers for life;(3)microbial contamination resulting from human habitation is unavoidable;(4)based on Mars' current planetary protection category, robotic payload(s) should characterize the local martian environment for any life-forms prior to human habitation. Some of the outstanding questions are:(1)which interpretation of the hemispheric dichotomy of the planet is correct;(2)to what degree did deep-penetrating faults transport subsurface liquids to Mars' surface;(3)in what abundance are carbonates formed by atmospheric processes;(4)what properties of martian meteorites could be used to constrain their source locations;(5)the origin(s) of organic macromolecules;(6)was/is Mars inhabited;(7)how can missions designed to uncover microbial activity in the subsurface eliminate potential false positives caused by microbial contaminants from Earth;(8)how can we ensure that humans and microbes form a stable and benign biosphere;(9)should humans relate to putative extraterrestrial life from a biocentric viewpoint (preservation of all biology), or anthropocentric viewpoint of expanding habitation of space? Studies of Mars' evolution can shed light on the habitability of extrasolar planets. In addition, Mars exploration can drive future policy developments and confirm (or put into question) the feasibility and/or extent of human habitability of space.

The presence of non-zero helicity in intergalactic magnetic fields is a smoking gun for their primordial origin since they have to be generated by processes that break CP invariance. As an experimental signature for the presence of helical magnetic fields, an estimator $Q$ based on the triple scalar product of the wave-vectors of photons generated in electromagnetic cascades from, e.g., TeV blazars, has been suggested previously. We propose to apply deep learning to helicity classification employing Convolutional Neural Networks and show that this method outperforms the $Q$ estimator., Comment: 14 pages, extended version of a contribution to the proceedings of the 37.th ICRC 2021

We evaluate what will be the effectiveness of the ExoMars Raman Laser Spectrometer (RLS) to determine the degree of serpentinization of olivine-rich units on Mars. We selected terrestrial analogues of martian ultramafic rocks from the Leka Ophiolite Complex (LOC) and analyzed them with both laboratory and flight-like analytical instruments. We first studied the mineralogical composition of the samples (mostly olivine and serpentine) with state-of-the-art diffractometric and spectroscopic laboratory systems. We compared these results with those obtained using our RLS ExoMars Simulator. Our work shows that the RLS ExoMars Simulator successfully identified all major phases. Moreover, when emulating the automatic operating mode of the flight instrument, the RLS ExoMars simulator also detected several minor compounds, some of which were not observed by NIR and XRD. Thereafter, we produced RLS dedicated calibration curves (R2 between 0.9993 and 0.9995 with an uncertainty between 3.0% and 5.2% with a confidence interval of 95%) to estimate the relative content of olivine and serpentine in the samples. Our results show that RLS can be very effective to identify serpentine, a scientific target of primary importance for the potential detection of biosignatures on Mars the main objective of the ExoMars rover mission.

It is known that there is at least an invariant analytic curve passing through each of the components in the complement of nodal singularities, after the reduction of singularities of a germ of singular foliation in ${\mathbb C}^2,0$}. One of the most well known random fractals is the so-called Fractal percolation set. This is defined as follows: we divide the unique cube in $\mathbb{R}^d$ into $M^d$ congruent sub-cubes. For each of these cubes a certain retention probability is assigned with which we retain the cube. The interior of the discarded cubes contain no points from the Fractal percolation set. In the retained ones we repeat the process ad infinitum. The set that remains after infinitely many steps is the Fractal percolation set. The homogeneous case is when all of these probabilities are the same. Recently, there have been considerable developments in regards with the projection and slicing properties in the homogeneous case. In the first part of this note we give an account of some of these recent results and then we discuss the difficulties and provide some new partial results in the non-homogeneous case., Comment: 16 pages

In this note we present some one-parameter families of homogeneous self-similar measures on the line such that - the similarity dimension is greater than $1$ for all parameters and - the singularity of some of the self-similar measures from this family is not caused by exact overlaps between the cylinders. We can obtain such a family as the angle-$\alpha$ projections of the natural measure of the Sierpi\'nski carpet. We present more general one-parameter families of self-similar measures $\nu_\alpha$, such that the set of parameters $\alpha$ for which $\nu_\alpha$ is singular is a dense $G_\delta$ set but this "exceptional" set of parameters of singularity has zero Hausdorff dimension.

In this paper we consider fractal percolation random Cantor sets $E$ on the plane constructed with non-homogeneous probabilities. We focus on the case when the probabilities are large enough to guarantee that the almost sure dimension of $E$ is greater than $1$. Under this assumption in the case of homogeneous (equal) probabilities it was proved by Rams and the first author that the orthogonal projection of $E$ contains an interval simultaneously in all directions. Moreover, Peres and Rams proved the stronger result that the orthogonal projection of the natural measure on $E$ to every line is absolutely continuous with H\"older-continuous density. We point out that in the case of non-homogeneous probabilities neither of the two previous assertions remain valid. However, we also prove that in the non-homogeneous case every line whose tangent is neither a rational nor a Liouville number is non-exceptional. That is, almost surely for all of these directions the projection of $E$ contains some interval and the projection of the natural measure has H\"older-continuous density., Comment: This paper contains a crucial error in the proof of Lemma 4.3. which affects the main result Theorem 2.1. as well. Here we state a conjecture concerning a local version of Brunella's alternative: any codimension one foliation in $({\mathbb C}^3,0)$ without germ of invariant surface has a neighborhood of the origin formed by leaves containing a germ of analytic curve at the origin. We prove the conjecture for the class of codimension one foliations whose reduction of singularities is obtained by blowing-up points and curves of equireduction and such that the final singularities are free of saddle-nodes. The concept of "partial separatrix" for a given reduction of singularities has a central role in our argumentations, as well as the quantitative control of the generic Camacho-Sad index in dimension three. The "nodal components" are the only possible obstructions to get such germs of analytic curves. We use the partial separatrices to push the leaves near a nodal component towards compact diacritical divisors, finding in this way the desired analytic curves.

We consider fractal percolation (or Mandelbrot percolation) which is one of the most well studied example of random Cantor sets. Rams and the first author studied the projections (orthogonal, radial and co-radial) of fractal percolation sets on the plane. This paper studies Random and Evolving Apollonian networks (RANs and EANs), in d dimension for any d>=2, i.e. dynamically evolving random d dimensional simplices looked as graphs inside an initial d-dimensional simplex. We determine the limiting degree distribution in RANs and show that it follows a power law tail with exponent tau=(2d-1)/(d-1). We further show that the degree distribution in EANs converges to the same degree distribution if the simplex-occupation parameter in the n-th step of the dynamics is q_n->0 and sum_{n=0}^infty q_n =infty. This result gives a rigorous proof for the conjecture of Zhang et al. that EANs tend to show similar behavior as RANs once the occupation parameter q->0. We also determine the asymptotic behavior of shortest paths in RANs and EANs for arbitrary d dimensions. For RANs we show that the shortest path between two uniformly chosen vertices (typical distance), the flooding time of a uniformly picked vertex and the diameter of the graph after n steps all scale as constant times log n. We determine the constants for all three cases and prove a central limit theorem for the typical distances. We prove a similar CLT for typical distances in EANs.

This paper is devoted to studying the structure of codimension one singular holomorphic foliations on $({\mathbb C}^3,0)$ without invariant germs of analytic surface. We focus on the so-called CH-foliations, that is, foliations without saddle nodes in two dimensional sections. Considering a reduction of singularities, we detect the possible existence of "nodal components", which are a higher dimensional version of the nodal separators in dimension two. If the foliation is without nodal components, we prove that all the leaves in a neighborhood of the origin contain at least one germ of analytic curve at the origin. We also study the structure of nodal components for the case of "Relatively Isolated CH-foliations" and we show that they cut the dicritical components or they exit the origin through a non compact invariant curve. This allows us to give a precise statement of a local version of Brunella's alternative: if we do not have an invariant surface, all the leaves contain a germ of analytic curve or it is possible to detect the nodal components in the generic points of the singular curves before doing the reduction of singularities.

Albert-Laszlo Barabasi introduced a model which exhibits the bursty nature of the arrival times of events in systems determined by decisions of some humans. In Barabasi's model tasks are selected to execution according to some rules which depends on the priorities of the tasks. In this paper we generalize the selection rule of the A.-L. Barabasi priority queuing model. We show that the bursty nature of human behavior can be explained by a model where tasks are selected proportional to their priorities. In addition, we extend some of Vazquez's heuristic arguments to analytic proofs., Comment: 3 figures

Given any compact manifold M, we construct a non-empty open subset O of the space of C^1-diffeomorphisms of M and a dense subset D of O such that the centralizer of every diffeomorphism in D is uncountable, hence non-trivial.

Suppose that f and g are Markov surjections, each defined on a wedge of circles, each fixing the branch point and having the branch point as the only critical value. We show that if the points in the inverse limit spaces associated with f and g corresponding to the branch point are distinguished then these inverse limit spaces are homeomorphic if and only if the substitutions associated with f and g are weakly equivalent. This, and related results, are applied to one-dimensional substitution tiling spaces, one-dimensional unstable manifolds of hyperbolic sets, and inverse limits of tent maps with periodic critical points., Comment: 14 pages
