The strong exchange interaction between 3$d$-4$f$ magnetic sublattice in rare-earth perovskites introduces a variety of complex magnetic states hosting fascinating electronic ground states with exotic properties. Especially when it comes to rare-earth nickelate and cobaltite perovskites, tuning their rich magnetic phase diagram and spin-state transitions make them potential candidates for spintronic applications. Here, we report the observation of antiferromagnetic coupling between Pr 4$f$ and Ni/Co 3$d$ magnetic sublattices and its tunability with strain in PrCo$_{0.5}$Ni$_{0.5}$O$_{3-\delta}$ (PCNO) thin films. SQUID magnetization measurements reveal ferromagnetic (FM) ordering around 25 K, followed by a spin glass transition at low temperatures subject to spin reorientation. Competing magnetic interactions arise owing to the 3$d$-4$f$ antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling between Pr and Co/Ni sublattice as revealed by the X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Pr $M_{4,5}$ and Co/Ni $L_{2,3}$ absorption edges. Strain dependence on these AFM coupling reveals an increase (decrease) in the AFM exchange interaction for tensile (compressive) strained films, leading to a net decrease (increase) in the magnetization of PCNO films at low temperatures. The relative increase in low-temperature negative magnetoresistance for compressively strained films also reflects the enhanced ferromagnetic ordering in the system. The angle-dependent magnetoresistance measurements reveal a two-fold anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) in tensile strained PCNO films. In contrast, temperature-dependent switching of AMR accompanied by a two- to four-fold symmetry crossover is observed for LaAlO$_3$-grown compressive strained films.

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures combining layered ferromagnets and other two-dimensional (2D) crystals are promising building blocks for the realization of ultra-compact devices with integrated magnetic, electronic and optical functionalities. Their implementation in various technologies depends strongly on the development of a bottom-up scalable synthesis approach allowing to realize highly uniform heterostructures with well-defined interfaces between different 2D layered materials. It also requires that each material component of the heterostructure remains functional, which ideally includes ferromagnetic order above room temperature for 2D ferromagnets. Here, we demonstrate large-area growth of Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_{2}$/graphene heterostructures achieved by vdW epitaxy of Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_{2}$ on epitaxial graphene. Structural characterization confirmed the realization of a continuous vdW heterostructure film with a sharp interface between Fe$_{5-x}$GeTe$_{2}$ and graphene. Magnetic and transport studies revealed that the ferromagnetic order persists well above 300 K with a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. In addition, epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) continues to exhibit a high electronic quality. These results represent an important advance beyond non-scalable flake exfoliation and stacking methods, thus marking a crucial step toward the implementation of ferromagnetic 2D materials in practical applications.

Inducing a magnetic gap at the Dirac point of the topological surface state (TSS) in a 3D topological insulator (TI) is a route to dissipationless charge and spin currents. Ideally, magnetic order is present only at the surface and not in the bulk, e.g. through proximity of a ferromagnetic (FM) layer. However, such a proximity-induced Dirac mass gap has not been observed, likely due to insufficient overlap of TSS and the FM subsystem. Here, we take a different approach, namely FM extension, using a thin film of the 3D TI Bi$_2$Te$_3$, interfaced with a monolayer of the lattice-matched van der Waals ferromagnet MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. Robust 2D ferromagnetism with out-of-plane anisotropy and a critical temperature of $\text{T}_\text{c}\approx$~15 K is demonstrated by X-ray magnetic dichroism and electrical transport measurements. Using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we observe the opening of a sizable magnetic gap in the 2D FM phase, while the surface remains gapless in the paramagnetic phase above T$_c$. This sizable gap indicates a relocation of the TSS to the FM ordered Mn moments near the surface, which leads to a large mutual overlap., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Effective models focused on pertinent low-energy degrees of freedom have substantially contributed to our qualitative understanding of quantum materials. An iconic example, the Kondo model, was key to demonstrating that the rich phase diagrams of correlated metals originate from the interplay of localized and itinerant electrons. Modern electronic structure calculations suggest that to achieve quantitative material-specific models, accurate consideration of the crystal field and spin-orbit interactions is imperative. This poses the question of how local high-energy degrees of freedom become incorporated into a collective electronic state. Here, we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) on CePd$_3$ to clarify the fate of all relevant energy scales. We find that even spin-orbit excited states acquire pronounced momentum-dependence at low temperature - the telltale sign of hybridization with the underlying metallic state. Our results demonstrate how localized electronic degrees of freedom endow correlated metals with new properties, which is critical for a microscopic understanding of superconducting, electronic nematic, and topological states.

Multiple intriguing phenomena have recently been discovered in tetragonal Heusler compounds, where $D_{2d}$ symmetry sets a unique interplay between Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) and magnetic dipolar interactions. In the prototype $D_{2d}$ compound Mn$_{1.4}$PtSn, this has allowed the stabilization of exotic spin textures such as first-reported anti-skyrmions or elliptic Bloch-type skyrmions. While less attention has so far been given to the low-field spiral state, this remains extremely interesting as a simplest phase scenario on which to investigate the complex hierarchy of magnetic interactions in this materials family. Here, via resonant small-angle soft x-ray scattering experiments on high-quality single crystals of Mn$_{1.4}$PtSn at low temperatures, we evidence how the underlying $D_{2d}$ symmetry of the DMI in this material is reflected in its magnetic texture. Our studies reveal the existence of a novel and complex metastable phase, which possibly has a mixed character of both the N\'{e}el-type cycloid and the Bloch-type helix, that forms at low temperature in zero fields upon the in-plane field training. This hybrid spin-spiral structure has a remarkable tunability, allowing to tilt its orientation beyond high-symmetry crystallographic directions and control its spiral period. These results broaden the reachness of Heusler $D_{2d}$ materials exotic magnetic phase diagram and extend its tunability, thus enhancing a relevant playground for further fundamental explorations and potential applications in energy saving technologies.

We performed x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements on heterostructures comprising topological insulators (TIs) of the (Bi,Sb)$_2$(Se,Te)$_3$ family and the magnetic insulator EuS. XMCD measurements allow us to investigate element-selective magnetic proximity effects at the very TI/EuS interface. A systematic analysis reveals that there is neither significant induced magnetism within the TI nor an enhancement of the Eu magnetic moment at such interface. Magnetic Tunnel Junctions whose basic element consists of two ferromagnetic electrodes separated by an insulating non-magnetic barrier have become intensely studied and used in non-volatile spintronic devices. Since ballistic tunnel of spin-polarized electrons sensitively depends on the chemical composition and the atomic geometry of the lead/barrier interfaces their proper design is a key issue for achieving the required functionality of the devices such as e.g. a high tunnel magneto resistance. An important leap in the development of novel spintronic devices is to replace the insulating barrier by a ferroelectric which adds new additional functionality induced by the polarization direction in the barrier giving rise to the tunnel electro resistance (TER). The multiferroic tunnel junction Co/PbZr$_{0.2}$Ti$_{0.8}$O$_{3}$/La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ (Co/PZT/LSMO) represents an archetype system for which - despite intense studies - no consensus exists for the interface geometry and their effect on transport properties. Here we provide the first analysis of the Co/PZT interface at the atomic scale using complementary techniques, namely x-ray diffraction and extended x-ray absorption fine structure in combination with x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and ab-initio calculations. The Co/PZT interface consists of one perovskite-type cobalt oxide unit cell [CoO$_{2}$/CoO/Ti(Zr)O$_{2}$] on which a locally ordered cobalt film grows. Magnetic moments (m) of cobalt lie in the range between m=2.3 and m=2.7$\mu_{B}$, while for the interfacial titanium atoms they are small (m=+0.005 $\mu_{B}$) and parallel to cobalt which is attributed to the presence of the cobalt-oxide interface layers. These insights into the atomistic relation between interface and magnetic properties is expected to pave the way for future high TER devices.

Magnetic rare-earth / non-magnetic metal superlattices are well-known to display chiral spin helices in the rare-earth layers that propagate coherently across the non-magnetic layers. However, the underlying mechanism that preserves the magnetic phase and chirality coherence across the non-magnetic layers has remained elusive. In this Letter, we use resonant and element-specific x-ray scattering to evidence directly the formation of two fundamentally different long-range modulations in a Holmium/Yttrium (Ho/Y) multilayer: the known Ho chiral spin helix with periodicity 25 {\AA}, and a newly observed charge density wave with periodicity 16 {\AA} that propagates through both the Ho and non-magnetic Y layer. With x-ray circular magnetic dichroism measurements ruling out the existence of a magnetic proximity effect induced moment in the non-magnetic Y layers, we propose that the charge density wave is also chiral, thus providing the means for the transmittance of magnetic chirality coherence between Ho layers.

A room-temperature skyrmion-hosting compound Co$_8$Zn$_8$Mn$_4$ has been examined by means of soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy, resonant small-angle scattering and extended reference holography. An element-selective study was performed by exciting the $2p$-to-$3d$ transitions near Co and Mn $L_{2,3}$ absorption edges. By utilizing the coherence of soft X-ray beams the element-specific real-space distribution of local magnetization at different temperatures has been reconstructed using iterative phase retrieval and holography with extended reference. It was shown that the magnetic moments of Co and Mn are ferromagnetically coupled and exhibit similar magnetic patterns. Both imaging methods provide a real-space resolution of 30 nm and allowed to record a magnetic texture in the temperature range between $T\,=\,20$ K and $T\,=120\,$ K, demonstrating the elongation of the skyrmions along the principal crystallographic axes at low temperatures. Micromagnetic simulations have shown that such deformation is driven by decreasing ratio of symmetric exchange interaction to antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the system and effect of the cubic anisotropy.

The layered van der Waals antiferromagnet MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has been predicted to combine the band ordering of archetypical topological insulators such as Bi$_2$Te$_3$ with the magnetism of Mn, making this material a viable candidate for the realization of various magnetic topological states. We have systematically investigated the surface electronic structure of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$(0001) single crystals by use of spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. In line with theoretical predictions, the results reveal a surface state in the bulk band gap and they provide evidence for the influence of exchange interaction and spin-orbit coupling on the surface electronic structure., Comment: Revised version

The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) has recently been reported to emerge in magnetically-doped topological insulators. Although its general phenomenology is well established, the microscopic origin is far from being properly understood and controlled. Here we report on a detailed and systematic investigation of transition-metal (TM)-doped Sb$_2$Te$_3$. By combining density functional theory (DFT) calculations with complementary experimental techniques, i.e., scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), resonant photoemission (resPES), and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), we provide a complete spectroscopic characterization of both electronic and magnetic properties. Our results reveal that the TM dopants not only affect the magnetic state of the host material, but also significantly alter the electronic structure by generating impurity-derived energy bands. Our findings demonstrate the existence of a delicate interplay between electronic and magnetic properties in TM-doped TIs. In particular, we find that the fate of the topological surface states critically depends on the specific character of the TM impurity: while V- and Fe-doped Sb$_2$Te$_3$ display resonant impurity states in the vicinity of the Dirac point, Cr and Mn impurities leave the energy gap unaffected. The single-ion magnetic anisotropy energy and easy axis, which control the magnetic gap opening and its stability, are also found to be strongly TM impurity-dependent and can vary from in-plane to out-of-plane depending on the impurity and its distance from the surface. Hybrid Graphene/magnetic structures offer a unique playground for fundamental research, and opportunities for emerging technologies. Graphene-spaced ultrathin structures with antiferromagnetic exchange-coupling (AFC) seem a relevant scenario, analogous to that of conventional metallic multilayer devices. Unfortunately, the AFC found so far between bulk magnetic single crystals and Graphene-spaced adatoms, clusters or molecules either requires low temperatures, is too weak, or of complex nature, for realistic exploitation. Here we show theoretically and experimentally that a strong perpendicular AFC can be established in ultrahin-film structures such as Fe/Gr/Co on Ir(111), first-time enabling Graphene-based synthetic antiferromagnet and ferrimagnet materials with unprecedented magnetic properties and appearing suitable for applications. Remarkably, the established AFC is robust on structure thicknesses, thermally stable up to room temperature, very strong but field-controllable, and occurs in perpendicular orientation with opposite high remanent layer magnetizations. Our atomistic first-principle simulations provide further ground for the feasibility of Graphene-mediated AFC ultra-thin film structures, revealing that Graphene acts not only as mere spacer but has a direct role in sustaining antiferromagnetic superexchange-coupling between the magnetic layers. The particle wave duality sets a fundamental correspondence between optics and quantum mechanics. Within this framework, the propagation of quasiparticles can give rise to superposition phenomena which, like for electromagnetic waves, can be described by the Huygens principle. However, the utilization of this principle by means of propagation and manipulation of quantum information is limited by the required coherence in time and space. Here we show that in topological insulators, which in their pristine form are characterized by opposite propagation directions for the two quasiparticles spin channels, mesoscopic focusing of coherent charge density oscillations can be obtained at large nested segments of constant energy contours by magnetic surface doping. Our findings provide evidence of strongly anisotropic Dirac fermion-mediated interactions. Even more remarkably, the validity of our findings goes beyond topological insulators but applies for systems with spin orbit lifted degeneracy in general. It demonstrates how spin information can be transmitted over long distances, allowing the design of experiments and devices based on coherent quantum effects in this fascinating class of materials.

Ultra-thin Pt films grown on insulating ferrimagnetic CoFe2O4 (111) epitaxial films display a magnetoresistance upon rotating the magnetization of the magnetic layer. We report here X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) recorded at Pt-L2,3 and Pt-M3 edges. The results indicate that the Pt magnetic moment, if any, is below the detection limit (< 0.001 {\mu}$_B$/Pt), thus strongly favoring the view that the presence of CoFe2O4 does not induce the formation of magnetic moments in Pt. Therefore, the observed magnetoresistance cannot be attributed to some sort of proximity-induced magnetic moments at Pt ions and subsequent magnetic-field dependent scattering. It thus follows that either bulk (spin Hall and Inverse spin Hall Effects) or interface (Rashba) spin-orbit related effects dominate the observed magnetoresistance. Furthermore, comparison of bulk magnetization and XMCD data at (Fe,Co)-L2,3 edges suggests the presence of some spin disorder in the CoFe2O4 layer which may be relevant for the observed anomalous non-saturating field-dependence of spin Hall magnetoresistance., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures PDF of revised manuscript as finally accepted for publication in Phys. We report a study of the local magnetism in thin films of SrRuO3 grown on (111) and (001) oriented SrTiO3 substrates using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy (XMCD) at the Ru-L2,3 edges. The application of the sum rules to the XMCD data gives an almost quenched orbital moment and a spin moment close to the value expected for the low spin state S = 1 . Full-multiplet cluster calculations indicate that the low spin state is quite stable and suggest that the occurrence of a transition to the high spin state S = 2 in strained thin films of SrRuO3 is unlikely as it would be too expensive in energy., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys Rev B
