This paper discusses the results for the second edition of the Monocular Depth Estimation Challenge (MDEC). This edition was open to methods using any form of supervision, including fully-supervised, self-supervised, multi-task or proxy depth. The challenge was based around the SYNS-Patches dataset, which features a wide diversity of environments with high-quality dense ground-truth. This includes complex natural environments, e.g. forests or fields, which are greatly underrepresented in current benchmarks. The challenge received eight unique submissions that outperformed the provided SotA baseline on any of the pointcloud- or image-based metrics. The top supervised submission improved relative F-Score by 27.62%, while the top self-supervised improved it by 16.61%. Supervised submissions generally leveraged large collections of datasets to improve data diversity. Self-supervised submissions instead updated the network architecture and pretrained backbones. These results represent a significant progress in the field, while highlighting avenues for future research, such as reducing interpolation artifacts at depth boundaries, improving self-supervised indoor performance and overall natural image accuracy., Comment: Published at CVPRW2023

Fast charging has attracted increasing attention from the battery community for electrical vehicles (EVs) to alleviate range anxiety and reduce charging time for EVs. However, inappropriate charging strategies would cause severe degradation of batteries or even hazardous accidents. To optimize fast-charging strategies under various constraints, particularly safety limits, we propose a novel deep Bayesian optimization (BO) approach that utilizes Bayesian recurrent neural network (BRNN) as the surrogate model, given its capability in handling sequential data. In addition, a combined acquisition function of expected improvement (EI) and upper confidence bound (UCB) is developed to better balance the exploitation and exploration. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated on the PETLION, a porous electrode theory-based battery simulator. Our method is also compared with the state-of-the-art BO methods that use Gaussian process (GP) and non-recurrent network as surrogate models. The results verify the superior performance of the proposed fast charging approaches, which mainly results from that: (i) the BRNN-based surrogate model provides a more precise prediction of battery lifetime than that based on GP or non-recurrent network; and (ii) the combined acquisition function outperforms traditional EI or UCB criteria in exploring the optimal charging protocol that maintains the longest battery lifetime.

Large-scale capture of human motion with diverse, complex scenes, while immensely useful, is often considered prohibitively costly. Meanwhile, human motion alone contains rich information about the scene they reside in and interact with. For example, a sitting human suggests the existence of a chair, and their leg position further implies the chair's pose. In this paper, we propose to synthesize diverse, semantically reasonable, and physically plausible scenes based on human motion. Our framework, Scene Synthesis from HUMan MotiON (SUMMON), includes two steps. It first uses ContactFormer, our newly introduced contact predictor, to obtain temporally consistent contact labels from human motion. Based on these predictions, SUMMON then chooses interacting objects and optimizes physical plausibility losses; it further populates the scene with objects that do not interact with humans. Experimental results demonstrate that SUMMON synthesizes feasible, plausible, and diverse scenes and has the potential to generate extensive human-scene interaction data for the community., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. A novel hybrid deep neural network architecture is designed to capture the spatial-temporal features of unsteady flows around moving boundaries directly from high-dimensional unsteady flow fields data. The hybrid deep neural network is constituted by the convolutional neural network (CNN), improved convolutional Long-Short Term Memory neural network (ConvLSTM) and deconvolutional neural network (DeCNN). Flow fields at future time step can be predicted through flow fields by previous time steps and boundary positions at those steps by the novel hybrid deep neural network. Unsteady wake flows around a forced oscillation cylinder with various amplitudes are calculated to establish the datasets as training samples for training the hybrid deep neural networks. The trained hybrid deep neural networks are then tested by predicting the unsteady flow fields around a forced oscillation cylinder with new amplitude. The effect of neural network structure parameters on prediction accuracy was analyzed. The hybrid deep neural network, constituted by the best parameter combination, is used to predict the flow fields in the future time. The predicted flow fields are in good agreement with those calculated directly by computational fluid dynamic solver, which means that this kind of deep neural network can capture accurate spatial-temporal information from the spatial-temporal series of unsteady flows around moving boundaries. The fast and accurate prediction of unsteady flow becomes a serious challenge in fluid dynamics, due to the high-dimensional and nonlinear characteristics. A novel hybrid deep neural network (DNN) architecture was designed to capture the unsteady flow spatio-temporal features directly from the high-dimensional unsteady flow fields. The hybrid deep neural network is constituted by the convolutional neural network (CNN), convolutional Long Short Term Memory neural network (ConvLSTM) and deconvolutional neural network (DeCNN). The flow around a cylinder at various Reynolds numbers and the flow around an airfoil at higher Reynolds number are carried out to establish the datasets used to train the networks separately. The trained hybrid DNNs were then tested by the prediction of the flow fields at future occasions. Materials design can be cast as an optimization problem with the goal of achieving desired properties, by varying material composition, microstructure morphology, and processing conditions. Existence of both qualitative and quantitative material design variables leads to disjointed regions in property space, making the search for optimal design challenging. Limited availability of experimental data and the high cost of simulations magnify the challenge. This situation calls for design methodologies that can extract useful information from existing data and guide the search for optimal designs efficiently. To this end, we present a data-centric, mixed-variable Bayesian Optimization framework that integrates data from literature, experiments, and simulations for knowledge discovery and computational materials design. Our framework pivots around the Latent Variable Gaussian Process (LVGP), a novel Gaussian Process technique which projects qualitative variables on a continuous latent space for covariance formulation, as the surrogate model to quantify "lack of data" uncertainty. Expected improvement, an acquisition criterion that balances exploration and exploitation, helps navigate a complex, nonlinear design space to locate the optimum design. The proposed framework is tested through a case study which seeks to concurrently identify the optimal composition and morphology for insulating polymer nanocomposites. We also present an extension of mixed-variable Bayesian Optimization for multiple objectives to identify the Pareto Frontier within tens of iterations. These findings project Bayesian Optimization as a powerful tool for design of engineered material systems.

Numerical modeling of viscoelastic properties is critical to developing the structure-property relationship of polymer nanocomposites. While it is recognized that the altered polymer region near filler particles, the interphase, significantly contributes to enhancements of composite properties, the spatial distribution of interphase properties is rarely considered due to lack of local property measurements. In recent years, the Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) technique has begun to make local property measurements of the interphase available. In the light of the increasing availability of AFM data, in this work a new interphase representation for modeling the viscoelastic properties of polymer nanocomposites is proposed. The proposed interphase representation disentangles the interphase behavior by two separate components -- single-body interphase gradient and multi-body compound effect, whose functional forms are learned via data mining. The proposed interphase representation is integrated into a Finite Element model, and the effects of each component of the interphase representations are numerically studied. In addition, the advantages of the proposed interphase representation are demonstrated by comparison to a prior simulation work in which only a uniform effective property of the interphase is considered. Superconductivity and ferromagnetism are antagonistic forms of order, and rarely coexist. Many interesting new phenomena occur, however, in hybrid superconducting/ferromagnetic systems. For example, a Josephson junction containing a ferromagnetic material can exhibit an intrinsic phase shift of pi in its ground state for certain thicknesses of the material. Such "pi-junctions" were first realized experimentally in 2001, and have been proposed as circuit elements for both high-speed classical superconducting computing and for quantum computing. Here we demonstrate experimentally that the phase state of a Josephson junction containing two ferromagnetic layers can be toggled between 0 and pi by changing the relative orientation of the two magnetizations. These controllable 0-pi junctions have immediate applications in cryogenic memory where they serve as a necessary component to an ultra-low power superconducting computer. Such a fully superconducting computer is estimated to be orders of magnitude more energy-efficient than current semiconductor-based supercomputers. Phase controllable junctions also open up new possibilities for superconducting circuit elements such as superconducting "programmable logic," where they could function in superconducting analogs to field-programmable gate arrays.

Josephson junctions containing multiple ferromagnetic layers can carry spin-triplet supercurrent under certain conditions. Large-area junctions containing multiple domains are expected to have a random distribution of 0 or pi coupling across the junction surface, whereas magnetized samples should have uniquely pi coupling everywhere. We have measured the area dependence of the critical current in such junctions, and confirm that the critical current scales linearly with area in magnetized junctions. For as-grown (multi-domain) samples, the results are mixed. Samples grown on a thick Nb base exhibit critical currents that scale sub-linearly with area, while samples grown on a smoother Nb/Al multilayer base exhibit critical currents that scale linearly with area. The latter results are consistent with a theoretical picture due to Zyuzin and Spivak that predicts that the as-grown samples should have global pi/2 coupling., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys. In 2010, several experimental groups obtained compelling evidence for spin-triplet supercurrent in Josephson junctions containing strong ferromagnetic materials. Our own best results were obtained from large-area junctions containing a thick central Co/Ru/Co "synthetic antiferromagnet" and two thin outer layers made of Ni or PdNi alloy. Because the ferromagnetic layers in our samples are multi-domain, one would expect the sign of the local current-phase relation inside the junctions to vary randomly as a function of lateral position. Here we report measurements of the area dependence of the critical current in several samples, where we find some evidence for those random sign variations. When the samples are magnetized, however, the critical current becomes clearly proportional to the area, indicating that the current-phase relation has the same sign across the entire area of the junctions., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, submitted to the proceedings of the 26th International Conference on Low Temperature Physics (LT-26)

In the past year, several groups have observed evidence for long-range spin-triplet supercurrent in Josephson junctions containing ferromagnetic (F) materials. In our work, the spin-triplet pair correlations are created by non-collinear magnetizations between a central Co/Ru/Co "synthetic antiferromagnet" (SAF) and two outer thin F layers. Here we present data showing that the spin-triplet supercurrent is enhanced up to 20 times after our samples are subject to a large in-plane magnetizing field. This surprising result can be explained if the Co/Ru/Co SAF undergoes a "spin-flop" transition, whereby the two Co layer magnetizations end up perpendicular to the magnetizations of the two thin F layers.
