A Type Ia supernova (SN) at $z=1.78$ was discovered in James Webb Space Telescope Near Infrared Camera imaging of the galaxy cluster PLCK G165.7+67.0 (G165; $z = 0.35$). The SN is situated 1.5-2 kpc from the host-galaxy nucleus and appears in three different locations as a result of gravitational lensing by G165. These data can yield a value for Hubble's constant using time delays from this multiply-imaged SN Ia that we call "SN H0pe." Over the cluster, we identified 21 image multiplicities, confirmed five of them using the Near-Infrared Spectrograph, and constructed a new lens model that gives a total mass within 600 kpc of ($2.6 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{14}$ $M_{\odot}$. The photometry uncovered a galaxy overdensity coincident with the SN host galaxy. NIRSpec confirmed six member galaxies, four of which surround the SN host galaxy with relative velocity $\lesssim$900 km s$^{-1}$ and projected physical extent $\lesssim$33 kpc. This compact galaxy group is dominated by the SN host galaxy, which has a stellar mass of $(5.0 \pm 0.1) \times 10^{11}$ $M_{\odot}$. The group members have specific star-formation rates of 2-260 Gyr$^{-1}$ derived from the H$\alpha$-line fluxes corrected for stellar absorption, dust extinction, and slit losses. Another group centered on a strongly-lensed dusty star forming galaxy is at $z=2.24$. The total (unobscured and obscured) SFR of this second galaxy group is estimated to be ($\gtrsim$100 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$), which translates to a supernova rate of $\sim$1 SNe yr$^{-1}$, suggesting that regular monitoring of this cluster may yield additional SNe., Comment: 29 pages, Accepted to ApJ on November 24, 2023

The massive galaxy cluster El Gordo (z=0.87) imprints multitudes of gravitationally lensed arcs onto James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) images. Eight bands of NIRCam imaging were obtained in the ``Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science'' (``PEARLS'') program. PSF-matched photometry across Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and NIRCam filters supplies new photometric redshifts. A new light-traces-mass lens model based on 56 image multiplicities identifies the two mass peaks and yields a mass estimate within 500 kpc of ~(7.0 +/- 0.30) x 10^14 Msun. A search for substructure in the 140 cluster members with spectroscopic redshifts confirms the two main mass components. The southeastern mass peak that contains the BCG is more tightly bound than the northwestern one. The virial mass within 1.7 Mpc is (5.1 +/- 0.60) x 10^14 Msun, lower than the lensing mass. A significant transverse velocity component could mean the virial mass is underestimated. We contribute one new member to the previously known z=4.32 galaxy group. Intrinsic (delensed) positions of the five secure group members span a physical extent of ~60 kpc. Thirteen additional candidates selected by spectroscopic/photometric constraints are small and faint with a mean intrinsic luminosity ~2.2 mag fainter than L*. NIRCam imaging admits a fairly wide range of brightnesses and morphologies for the group members, suggesting a more diverse galaxy population in this galaxy overdensity., Comment: 24 pages, accepted by ApJ

The COVID-19 pandemic has had high mortality rates in the elderly and frail worldwide, particularly in care homes. This is driven by the difficulty of isolating care homes from the wider community, the large population sizes within care facilities (relative to typical households), and the age/frailty of the residents. To quantify the mortality risk posed by disease, the case fatality risk (CFR) is an important tool. This quantifies the proportion of cases that result in death. Throughout the pandemic, CFR amongst care home residents in England has been monitored closely. To estimate CFR, we apply both novel and existing methods to data on deaths in care homes, collected by Public Health England and the Care Quality Commission. We compare these different methods, evaluating their relative strengths and weaknesses. Using these methods, we estimate temporal trends in the instantaneous CFR (at both daily and weekly resolutions) and the overall CFR across the whole of England, and dis-aggregated at regional level. We also investigate how the CFR varies based on age and on the type of care required, dis-aggregating by whether care homes include nursing staff and by age of residents. This work has contributed to the summary of measures used for monitoring the UK epidemic.

Using the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope, we present low-resolution (64 < lambda / dlambda < 124), mid-infrared (20-38 micron) spectra of 23 high-redshift ULIRGs detected in the Bootes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. All of the sources were selected to have 1) fnu(24 micron) > 0.5 mJy; 2) R-[24] > 14 Vega mag; and 3) a prominent rest-frame 1.6 micron stellar photospheric feature redshifted into Spitzer's 3-8 micron IRAC bands. Of these, 20 show emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), usually interpreted as signatures of star formation. The PAH features indicate redshifts in the range 1.5 < z < 3.0, with a mean of =1.96 and a dispersion of 0.30. Based on local templates, these sources have extremely large infrared luminosities, comparable to that of submillimeter galaxies. Our results confirm previous indications that the rest-frame 1.6 micron stellar bump can be efficiently used to select highly obscured starforming galaxies at z~2, and that the fraction of starburst-dominated ULIRGs increases to faint 24 micron flux densities. Using local templates, we find that the observed narrow redshift distribution is due to the fact that the 24 micron detectability of PAH-rich sources peaks sharply at z = 1.9. We can analogously explain the broader redshift distribution of Spitzer-detected AGN-dominated ULIRGs based on the shapes of their SEDs. Finally, we conclude that z~2 sources with a detectable 1.6 micron stellar opacity feature lack sufficient AGN emission to veil the 7.7 micron PAH band., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ; references corrected in Section 3.2 and Figure 8

Observations with Spitzer Space Telescope have recently revealed a significant population of high-redshift z~2 dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs) with large mid-IR to UV luminosity ratios. These galaxies have been missed in traditional optical studies of the distant universe. We present a simple method for selecting this high-z population based solely on the ratio of the observed mid-IR 24um to optical R-band flux density. In the 8.6 sq.deg Bootes NDWFS Field, we uncover ~2,600 DOG candidates (= 0.089/sq.arcmin) with 24um flux densities F24>0.3mJy and (R-[24])>14 (i.e., F[24]/F[R] > 1000). These galaxies have no counterparts in the local universe, and become a larger fraction of the population at fainter F24, representing 13% of the sources at 0.3~mJy. DOGs exhibit evidence of both star-formation and AGN activity, with the brighter 24um sources being more AGN- dominated. We have measured spectroscopic redshifts for 86 DOGs, and find a broad z distribution centered at ~2.0. Their space density is 2.82E-5 per cubic Mpc, similar to that of bright sub-mm-selected galaxies at z~2. These redshifts imply very large luminosities LIR>~1E12-14 Lsun. DOGs contribute ~45-100% of the IR luminosity density contributed by all z~2 ULIRGs, suggesting that our simple selection criterion identifies the bulk of z~2 ULIRGs. DOGs may be the progenitors of ~4L* present-day galaxies seen undergoing a luminous,short- lived phase of bulge and black hole growth.
