Pathology images are crucial for diagnosing and managing various diseases by visualizing cellular and tissue-level abnormalities. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly multimodal models like ChatGPT, have shown promise in transforming medical image analysis through capabilities such as medical vision-language question answering. However, there remains a significant gap in integrating pathology image data with these AI models for clinical applications. This study benchmarks the performance of GPT on pathology images, assessing their diagnostic accuracy and efficiency in real-word clinical records. We observe significant deficits of GPT in bone diseases and a fair-level performance in diseases from other three systems. Despite offering satisfactory abnormality annotations, GPT exhibits consistent disadvantage in terminology accuracy and multimodal integration. Specifically, we demonstrate GPT's failures in interpreting immunohistochemistry results and diagnosing metastatic cancers. This study highlight the weakness of current generalist GPT model and contribute to the integration of pathology and advanced AI.

Temporal knowledge graph completion aims to infer the missing facts in temporal knowledge graphs. Current approaches usually embed factual knowledge into continuous vector space and apply geometric operations to learn potential patterns in temporal knowledge graphs. However, these methods only adopt a single operation, which may have limitations in capturing the complex temporal dynamics present in temporal knowledge graphs. Therefore, we propose a simple but effective method, i.e. TCompoundE, which is specially designed with two geometric operations, including time-specific and relation-specific operations. We provide mathematical proofs to demonstrate the ability of TCompoundE to encode various relation patterns. Experimental results show that our proposed model significantly outperforms existing temporal knowledge graph embedding models. Our code is available at https://github.com/nk-ruiying/TCompoundE.

We present the results of our observations using the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) to investigate the radio continuum and OH line emission of 10 OHM candidates from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey. Among these candidates, we have identified two sources, AGC115713 and AGC249507, which display compact OH line emission that are spatially associated with radio continuum emission. These characteristics align with the typical properties of OHM galaxies. Furthermore, the infrared (IR) properties of these two galaxies are consistent with those of known OHM galaxies. %Importantly, these two sources have been independently confirmed by alternative methods. Of the two sources, AGC 249507 has been confirmed through optical redshift, whereas AGC 115713 meets a WISE color selection criterion in the literature, providing additional support for this source being an OHM galaxy rather than a nearby \HI galaxy. On the contrary, no significant spectral line emission were detected in the remaining eight OHM candidates using our full GMRT dataset. This suggests that the spectral line emission initially detected by the ALFALFA survey may have been significantly resolved in our high-resolution observations. Additionally, the absence of radio continuum emission in 6 candidates also distinguishes them from known OHM galaxies documented in the literature. These findings support the notion that OHM emission may be distributed on a subarcsecond scale, underscoring the utility of arcsecond-scale observations in confirming OHM candidates, particularly those lacking optical redshift data., Comment: Accepted by A&A

Highly radio-loud quasars (HRLQs; $\log R>2.5$) at $z\gtrsim 4$ show apparent enhanced X-ray emission compared to matched HRLQs at lower redshifts, perhaps due to a redshift-dependent fractional contribution to the X-ray luminosity from inverse-Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons (IC/CMB). Using new {\it Chandra} observations and archival X-ray data, we investigate this phenomenon with an optically flux-limited sample of 41 HRLQs at $z = 4$--5.5 all with sensitive X-ray coverage, the largest sample utilized to date by a wide margin. X-ray enhancements are assessed using X-ray-to-optical flux ratios and spectral energy distributions. We confirm the presence of X-ray enhancements at a 4.9--5.3$\sigma$ significance level, finding that the median factor of enhancement is $\approx 1.8$ at our sample median redshift of $z\approx 4.4$. Under a fractional IC/CMB model, the expected enhancement at lower redshifts is modest; e.g., $\approx 4$% at $z\approx 1.5$. We also investigate a sample of seven radio-loud quasars (RLQs; $\log R>1$) at even higher redshifts of $z=5.6$--6.8, using new and archival X-ray data. These RLQs also show evidence for X-ray enhancements by a median factor of $\approx 2.7$ at a 3.7--4.9$\sigma$ significance level. The X-ray spectral and other properties of these $z=5.6$--6.8 RLQs, however, pose challenges for a straightforward fractional IC/CMB interpretation of their enhancements., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Weak-line quasars (WLQs) are a notable group of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that show unusually weak UV lines even though their optical-UV continuum shapes are similar to those of typical quasars. The physical mechanism for WLQs is an unsolved puzzle in the AGN unified model. We explore the properties of UV emission lines by performing extensive photoionization calculations based on Cloudy simulation with different spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of AGNs. The AGN continua are built from several observational empirical correlations, where the black-body emission from the cold disk, the power-law emission from the hot corona, and a soft X-ray excess component are considered. We find that the equivalent width (EW) of C {\footnotesize IV} from our models is systematically lower than observational values if the component of soft X-ray excess is neglected. The EW will increase several times and is roughly consistent with the observations after considering the soft X-ray excess component as constrained from normal type I AGNs. We find that the UV lines are weak for QSOs with quite large BH mass (e.g., $M_{\rm BH}>10^9M_{\odot}$) and weak soft X-ray emission due to the deficit of ionizing photons. As an example, we present the strength of C {\footnotesize IV} based on the multi-band SEDs for three nearby weak-line AGNs, where the weaker soft X-ray emission normally predicts the weaker lines., Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJ

X-ray emission is an important tracer of stellar magnetic activity. We carried out a systematic correlation analysis for the X-ray luminosity $\log L_{\rm X}$, bolometric luminosity $\log L_{\rm bol}$, and X-ray activity level $\log(L_{\textrm{X}}$/$L_{\textrm{bol}})$ versus the binary parameters including orbital period $P$, Rossby number $R_{\rm O}$, effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$, metallicity [Fe/H] and the surface gravity $\log g$, and the stellar mass $M$ \& radius $R$, by assembling a large sample of semi-detached (EB-type) binaries with X-ray emission (EBXs). The fact that both $\log L_{\rm X}$ and $\log L_{\rm bol}$ change in accordance with $\log P$ indicates that X-ray emission originates from the convection zone, while $\log L_{\rm X}$ is proportional to the convection zone area. We found that EBXs with main-sequence components exhibit an upward and then a downward trend in both the $\log T_{\rm eff}$-$\log L_{\textrm{X}}$ and $M$-$\log L_{\textrm{X}}$ relations, which is different from the monotonically decreasing trend shown by EBXs containing sub-giant and giant components. The magnetic activity level is negatively correlated with $\log T_{\rm eff}$ and stellar mass. Based on the magnetic dynamo model, the variations in the size and thickness of the surface convection zones can explain the observed relations. EBXs with main-sequence components have similar $R_{\rm O}$-$\log(L_{\textrm{X}}/L_{\textrm{bol}})$ relationship to that of the binaries in the clusters as Praesepe and Hyade. We use LCOGT observations (MJD $59434-59600$) with a total exposure time of $\simeq 50$ hours and a median cadence of $0.5$ days to measure the inter-band time delays (with respect to $u$) in the $g$, $r$, and $i$ continua of a highly variable AGN, 6dFGS gJ022550.0-060145. We also calculate the expected time delays of the X-ray reprocessing of a static Shakura \& Sunyaev disk (SSD) according to the sources' luminosity and virial black-hole mass; the two parameters are measured from the optical spectrum of our spectroscopic observation via the Lijiang \SI{2.4}{\meter} telescope. It is found that the ratio of the measured time delays to the predicted ones is $2.6_{-1.3}^{+1.3}$. With optical light curves (MJD $53650-59880$) from our new LCOGT and archival ZTF, Pan-SATRRS, CSS, and ATLAS observations, and infrared (IR) WISE data (MJD $55214-59055$), we also measured time delays between WISE $W1$/$W2$ and the optical emission. $W1$ and $W2$ have time delays (with respect to V), $9.6^{+2.9}_{-1.6}\times 10^2$ days and $1.18^{+0.13}_{-0.10}\times 10^3$ days in the rest-frame, respectively; hence, the dusty torus of 6dFGS gJ022550.0-060145 should be compact. The time delays of $W1$ and $W2$ bands are higher than the dusty torus size-luminosity relationship of~\cite{Lyu2019}. By comparing the IR and optical variability amplitude, we find that the dust covering factors of $W1$ and $W2$ emission regions are 0.7 and 0.6, respectively. Autonomous vehicles are exposed to various weather during operation, which is likely to trigger the performance limitations of the perception system, leading to the safety of the intended functionality (SOTIF) problems. To efficiently generate data for testing the performance of visual perception algorithms under various weather conditions, a hierarchical-level rain image generative model, rain conditional CycleGAN (RCCycleGAN), is constructed. RCCycleGAN is based on the generative adversarial network (GAN) and can generate images of light, medium, and heavy rain. Different rain intensities are introduced as labels in conditional GAN (CGAN). Meanwhile, the model structure is optimized and the training strategy is adjusted to alleviate the problem of mode collapse. In addition, natural rain images of different intensities are collected and processed for model training and validation. Compared with the two baseline models, CycleGAN and DerainCycleGAN, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of RCCycleGAN on the test dataset is improved by 2.58 dB and 0.74 dB, and the structural similarity (SSIM) is improved by 18% and 8%, respectively. The ablation experiments are also carried out to validate the effectiveness of the model tuning.

The widely adopted ``lamppost'' thermal reprocessing model, in which the variable UV/optical emission is a result of the accretion disk reprocessing of the highly fluctuating X-ray emission, can be tested by measuring inter-band time lags in quasars spanning a range of X-ray power. This work reports the inter-band time lag in an apparently X-ray weak quasar, SDSS J153913.47+395423.4. A significant cross-correlation with a time delay of $\sim 33$ days (observed-frame) is detected in the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) $g$ and $r$ light curves of SDSS J153913.47+395423.4. The observed X-ray power seems to be too weak to account for the observed inter-band cross-correlation with time delay. Hence the X-ray weak quasar SDSS J153913.47+395423.4 is either intrinsically X-ray normal (but observationally X-ray weak), or the X-ray emission is not the only mechanism to drive UV/optical variability. In the former case, the required X-ray power is at least 19 times stronger than observed, which requires either an exceptionally anisotropic corona or Compton-thick obscuration. We report the discovery of three HI absorbers toward low-power radio active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in a pilot HI absorption survey with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Compared to past studies, FAST observations have explored lower radio powers by $\sim$0.4 dex and detected these weakest absorbers at given redshifts. By comparing the gas properties and kinematics of sources along radio powers, we aim to explore the interplay between AGN and the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). Compared to brighter sources at similar redshifts, our observations suggest a slightly lower detection rate of HI absorption lines ($\sim$$11.5\%$) in low-power radio AGNs with $\text{log}(P_{\text{1.4 GHz}}/\text{W Hz}^{-1})=21.8-23.7$. The low-power sources with $\text{log}(P_{\text{1.4 GHz}}/\text{W Hz}^{-1})<23$ have a lower detection rate of $\sim$$6.7\%$. Due to the incompleteness of the sample, these detection rates may represent the lower limits. The selection of more extended sources and dilution by HI emission at lower redshifts may contribute to the lower detection rate of HI absorption lines. These detected absorbers present relatively narrow line widths and comparable column densities consistent with previous observations. One absorber has a symmetric profile with a large velocity offset, while the other two show asymmetric profiles that can be decomposed into multiple components, suggesting various possibilities of gas origins and kinematics. These HI absorbers may have connections with rotating disks, gas outflows, galactic gas clouds, gas fueling of the AGN, and jet-ISM interactions, which will be further investigated with the upcoming systematic survey and spatially resolved observations., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Stars form in galaxies, from gas that has been accreted from the intergalactic medium. Simulations have shown that recycling of gas-the reaccretion of gas that was previously ejected from a galaxy-could sustain star formation in the early Universe. We observe the gas surrounding a massive galaxy at redshift 2.3 and detect emission lines from neutral hydrogen, helium, and ionized carbon that extend 100 kiloparsecs from the galaxy. The kinematics of this circumgalactic gas is consistent with an inspiraling stream. The carbon abundance indicates that the gas had already been enriched with elements heavier than helium, previously ejected from a galaxy. Weak emission-line quasars (WLQs) are a subset of Type 1 quasars that exhibit extremely weak Ly$\alpha +$N V $\lambda$1240 and/or C IV $\lambda$1549 emission lines. We investigate the relationship between emission-line properties and accretion rate for a sample of 230 `ordinary' Type 1 quasars and 18 WLQs at $z < 0.5$ and $1.5 < z < 3.5$ that have rest-frame ultraviolet and optical spectral measurements. We apply a correction to the H$\beta$-based black-hole mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) estimates of these quasars using the strength of the optical Fe II emission. We confirm previous findings that WLQs' $M_{\rm BH}$ values are overestimated by up to an order of magnitude using the traditional broad emission-line region size-luminosity relation. With this $M_{\rm BH}$ correction, we find a significant correlation between H$\beta$-based Eddington luminosity ratios and a combination of the rest-frame C IV equivalent width and C IV blueshift with respect to the systemic redshift. This correlation holds for both ordinary quasars and WLQs, which suggests that the two-dimensional C IV parameter space can serve as an indicator of accretion rate in all Type 1 quasars across a wide range of spectral properties., Comment: 17 pages (AASTeX 6.3.1), 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Background: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the most common type of age-related dementia, affecting 6.2 million people aged 65 or older according to CDC data. It is commonly agreed that discovering an effective AD diagnosis biomarker could have enormous public health benefits, potentially preventing or delaying up to 40% of dementia cases. Tau neurofibrillary tangles are the primary driver of downstream neurodegeneration and subsequent cognitive impairment in AD, resulting in structural deformations such as hippocampal atrophy that can be observed in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Objective: To build a surface-based model to 1) detect differences between APOE subgroups in patterns of tau deposition and hippocampal atrophy, and 2) use the extracted surface-based features to predict cognitive decline. Methods: Using data obtained from different institutions, we develop a surface-based federated Chow test model to study the synergistic effects of APOE, a previously reported significant risk factor of AD, and tau on hippocampal surface morphometry. Results: We illustrate that the APOE-specific morphometry features correlate with AD progression and better predict future AD conversion than other MRI biomarkers. For example, a strong association between atrophy and abnormal tau was identified in hippocampal subregion cornu ammonis 1 (CA1 subfield) and subiculum in e4 homozygote cohort. Conclusion: Our model allows for identifying MRI biomarkers for AD and cognitive decline prediction and may uncover a corner of the neural mechanism of the influence of APOE and tau deposition on hippocampal morphology.

We present a deep optical imaging campaign on the starburst galaxy NGC 4631 with CFHT/MegaCam. By supplementing the HST/ACS and Chandra/ACIS archival data, we search for the optical counterpart candidates of the five brightest X-ray sources in this galaxy, four of which are identified as ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). The stellar environments of the X-ray sources are analyzed using the extinction-corrected color-magnitude diagrams and the isochrone models. We discover a highly asymmetric bubble nebula around X4 which exhibits different morphology in the H$\alpha$ and [O III] images. The [O III]/H$\alpha$ ratio map shows that the H$\alpha$-bright bubble may be formed mainly via the shock ionization by the one-sided jet/outflow, while the more compact [O III] structure is photoionized by the ULX. We constrain the bubble expansion velocity and interstellar medium density with the MAPPINGS V code, and hence estimate the mechanical power injected to the bubble as $P_w \sim 5\times10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and the corresponding bubble age of $\sim7\times 10^{5}$ yr. Relativistic jets are needed to provide such level of mechanical power with a mass-loss rate of $\sim10^{-7}\ M_{\odot}\ \rm yr^{-1}$. Relation prediction is a task designed for knowledge graph completion which aims to predict missing relationships between entities. Recent subgraph-based models for inductive relation prediction have received increasing attention, which can predict relation for unseen entities based on the extracted subgraph surrounding the candidate triplet. However, they are not completely inductive because of their disability of predicting unseen relations. Moreover, they fail to pay sufficient attention to the role of relation as they only depend on the model to learn parameterized relation embedding, which leads to inaccurate prediction on long-tail relations. In this paper, we introduce Relation-dependent Contrastive Learning (ReCoLe) for inductive relation prediction, which adapts contrastive learning with a novel sampling method based on clustering algorithm to enhance the role of relation and improve the generalization ability to unseen relations. Instead of directly learning embedding for relations, ReCoLe allocates a pre-trained GNN-based encoder to each relation to strengthen the influence of relation. The GNN-based encoder is optimized by contrastive learning, which ensures satisfactory performance on long-tail relations. In addition, the cluster sampling method equips ReCoLe with the ability to handle both unseen relations and entities. Experimental results suggest that ReCoLe outperforms state-of-the-art methods on commonly used inductive datasets.

Background: Beta-amyloid (A$\beta$) plaques and tau protein tangles in the brain are the defining 'A' and 'T' hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and together with structural atrophy detectable on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans as one of the neurodegenerative ('N') biomarkers comprise the ''ATN framework'' of AD. Current methods to detect A$\beta$/tau pathology include cerebrospinal fluid (CSF; invasive), positron emission tomography (PET; costly and not widely available), and blood-based biomarkers (BBBM; promising but mainly still in development). Objective: To develop a non-invasive and widely available structural MRI-based framework to quantitatively predict the amyloid and tau measurements. Methods: With MRI-based hippocampal multivariate morphometry statistics (MMS) features, we apply our Patch Analysis-based Surface Correntropy-induced Sparse coding and max-pooling (PASCS-MP) method combined with the ridge regression model to individual amyloid/tau measure prediction. Results: We evaluate our framework on amyloid PET/MRI and tau PET/MRI datasets from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). Each subject has one pair consisting of a PET image and MRI scan, collected at about the same time. Experimental results suggest that amyloid/tau measurements predicted with our PASCP-MP representations are closer to the real values than the measures derived from other approaches, such as hippocampal surface area, volume, and shape morphometry features based on spherical harmonics (SPHARM). Recent studies have revealed the global deposition on Earth of radioactive elements (e.g., $^{60}$Fe) resulting from the metal-enriched ejecta of nearby (within $\sim 100$ pc) supernova explosions. The majority of neutron stars in our Solar neighborhood remain to be discovered. Here we report the discovery of the nearest ($127.7 \pm 0.3$ pc) neutron star candidate in the single-lined spectroscopic binary LAMOST J235456.76+335625.7 (hereafter J2354). Utilizing the multi-epoch spectra and high-cadence periodic light curves, we measure the mass of the visible star ($M_{\rm vis}=0.70\pm 0.05\ M_{\odot}$) and determine the mass function of the invisible object $f(M)=0.525 \pm 0.004\ M_{\odot}$, i.e., the mass of the unseen compact object is $M_{\rm inv} \geq 1.26 \pm 0.03\ M_{\odot}$. The excess UV emission due to a hot supramassive white dwarf is absent. Hence, it is likely that J2354 harbors a neutron star. J2354 is X-ray dim (the $0.1$--$2.4$ keV luminosity $<10^{30}\ {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$) since it is not detected in the ROSAT all-sky surveys in X-ray. One-hour exceptionally sensitive radio follow-up observations with FAST, the largest single-dish radio telescope, failed to reveal any radio pulsating signals (the potential pulse power at $1.4$ GHz is $<6.8\times 10^{23}\ {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$). Hence, the neutron star candidate in J2354 can only be discovered via our time-resolved observations. The alternative scenario involving a nearby supramassive cold white dwarf cannot be fully excluded. Our discovery demonstrates a promising way to unveil the missing population of backyard inactive neutron stars or supramassive cold white dwarfs in binaries by exploring the optical time domain, thereby facilitating understanding of the supernovae explosion and metal-enrichment history in our Solar neighborhood., Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures, to be submitted

We report a single-lined white dwarf-main sequence binary system, LAMOST J172900.17+652952.8, which is discovered by LAMOST's medium resolution time-domain surveys. The radial velocity semi-amplitude and orbital period of the optical visible star are measured by using the Palomar 200-inch telescope follow-up observations and the light curves from TESS. Thus the mass function of the invisible candidate white dwarf is derived, $f(M_{\rm{2}}) = 0.120\,\pm\,0.003\,M_{\odot}$. The mass of the visible star is measured based on the spectral energy distribution fitting, $M_{\mathrm{1}}$ = $0.81^{+0.07}_{-0.06}\,M_{\odot}$. Hence, the mass of its invisible companion is $M_{\rm{2}}\,\gtrsim\,0.63\,M_{\odot}$. The companion ought to be a compact object rather than a main-sequence star owing to the mass ratio $q = M_{\rm{2}} / M_{\rm 1} \gtrsim 0.78$ and the single-lined spectra. The compact object is likely to be a white dwarf except for small inclination angle, $i\,\lesssim\,40^{\circ}$. By using the GALEX NUV flux, the effective temperature of the white dwarf candidate is constrained as $T_{\rm eff}^{\rm WD}\,\lesssim\,12000-13500$ K. It is difficult to detect white dwarfs which are outshone by their bright companions via single-epoch optical spectroscopic surveys. We present LAMOST~J041920.07+072545.4 (hereafter J0419), a close binary consisting of a bloated extremely low mass pre-white dwarf (pre-ELM WD) and a compact object with an orbital period of 0.607189~days. The large-amplitude ellipsoidal variations and the evident Balmer and He~I emission lines suggest a filled Roche lobe and ongoing mass transfer. No outburst events were detected in the 15 years of monitoring of J0419, indicating a very low mass transfer rate. The temperature of the pre-ELM, $T_\mathrm{eff} = 5793_{-133}^{+124}\,\rm K$, is cooler than the known ELMs, but hotter than most CV donors. Combining the mean density within the Roche lobe and the radius constrained from our SED fitting, we obtain the mass of the pre-ELM, $M_1 = 0.176\pm 0.014\,M_\odot$. The joint fitting of light and radial velocity curves yields an inclination angle of $i = 66.5_{-1.7}^{+1.4}$ degrees, corresponding to the compact object mass of $M_2 = 1.09\pm 0.05\,M_\odot$. The very bloated pre-ELM has a smaller surface gravity ($\log g = 3.9\pm 0.01$, $R_1 = 0.78 \pm 0.02\,R_\odot$) than the known ELMs or pre-ELMs. The temperature and the luminosity ($L_\mathrm{bol} = 0.62_{-0.10}^{+0.11}\,L_\odot$) of J0419 are close to the main sequence, which makes the selection of such systems through the HR diagram inefficient. Optical time-domain surveys can unveil and characterize exciting but less-explored non-accreting and/or non-beaming neutron stars (NS) in binaries. Here we report the discovery of such a NS candidate using the LAMOST spectroscopic survey. The candidate, designated LAMOST J112306.9+400736 (hereafter J1123), is in a single-lined spectroscopic binary containing an optically visible M star. The star's large radial velocity variation and ellipsoidal variations indicate a relatively massive unseen companion. Utilizing follow-up spectroscopy from the Palomar 200-inch telescope and high-precision photometry from TESS, we measure a companion mass of $1.24_{-0.03}^{+0.03}~M_{\odot}$. Main-sequence stars with this mass are ruled out, leaving a NS or a massive white dwarf (WD). Although a massive WD cannot be ruled out, the lack of UV excess radiation from the companion supports the NS hypothesis. Deep radio observations with FAST yielded no detections of either pulsed or persistent emission. J1123 is not detected in numerous X-ray and gamma-ray surveys. These non-detections suggest that the NS candidate is not presently accreting and pulsing. By assembling the largest sample to date of X-ray emitting EW-type binaries (EWXs), we carried out correlation analyses for the X-ray luminosity log$L_{\textrm{X}}$, and X-ray activity level log($L_{\textrm{X}}$/$L_{\textrm{bol}}$) versus the orbital period $P$ and effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$. We find strong $P$-log$L_{\textrm{X}}$ and $P$-log($L_{\textrm{X}}$/$L_{\textrm{bol}}$) correlations for EWXs with $P$ < 0.44 days and we provide the linear parametrizations for these relations, on the basis of which the orbital period can be treated as a good predictor for log$L_{\textrm{X}}$ and log($L_{\textrm{X}}$/$L_{\textrm{bol}}$). The aforementioned binary stellar parameters are all correlated with log$L_{\textrm{X}}$, while only $T_{\rm eff}$ exhibits a strong correlation with log($L_{\textrm{X}}$/$L_{\textrm{bol}}$). Then, EWXs with higher temperature show lower X-ray activity level, which could indicate the thinning of the convective area related to the magnetic dynamo mechanism. The total X-ray luminosity of an EWX is essentially consistent with that of an X-ray saturated main sequence star with the same mass as its primary, which may imply that the primary star dominates the X-ray emission. The monotonically decreasing $P$-log($L_{\textrm{X}}$/$L_{\textrm{bol}}$) relation and the short orbital periods indicate that EWXs could all be in the X-ray saturated state, and they may inherit the changing trend of the saturated X-ray luminosities along with the mass shown by single stars. For EWXs, the orbital period, mass, and effective temperature increase in concordance. We demonstrate that the period $P=0.44$ days corresponds to the primary mass of $\sim1.1 \rm M_\odot$, beyond which the saturated X-ray luminosity of single stars will not continue to increase with mass. We present ultraviolet spectroscopy covering the Ly$\alpha$ + N V complex of six candidate low-redshift ($0.9 < z < 1.5$) weak emission-line quasars (WLQs) based on observations with the Hubble Space Telescope. The original systematic searches for these puzzling Type 1 quasars with intrinsically weak broad emission lines revealed an $N \approx 100$ WLQ population from optical spectroscopy of high-redshift ($z > 3$) quasars, defined by a Ly$\alpha$ + N V rest-frame equivalent width (EW) threshold $< 15.4$ \r{A}. Identification of lower-redshift ($z < 3$) WLQ candidates, however, has relied primarily on optical spectroscopy of weak broad emission lines at longer rest-frame wavelengths. With these new observations expanding existing optical coverage into the ultraviolet, we explore unifying the low- and high-$z$ WLQ populations via EW[Ly$\alpha$+NV]. Two objects in the sample unify with high-$z$ WLQs, three others appear consistent with the intermediate portion of the population connecting WLQs and normal quasars, and the final object is consistent with typical quasars. The expanded wavelength coverage improves the number of available line diagnostics for our individual targets, allowing a better understanding of the shapes of their ionizing continua. The ratio of EW[Ly$\alpha$+NV] to EW[MgII] in our sample is generally small but varied, favoring a soft ionizing continuum scenario for WLQs, and we find a lack of correlation between EW[Ly$\alpha$+NV] and the X-ray properties of our targets, consistent with a "slim-disk" shielding gas model. We also find indications that weak absorption may be a more significant contaminant in low-$z$ WLQ populations than previously thought., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables. The black hole candidate MAXI J1348-630 was discovered on January 26th, 2019, with the Gas Slit Camera (GSC) on-board \textit{MAXI}. We report a detailed spectral analysis of this source by using the archived data of \textit{NuSTAR}. A total of 9 observations covered the complete outburst evolution of MAXI J1348-630 from the hard state to the soft state and finally back to the hard state. Additionally, the intermediate state is found in the transition from the hard state to the soft state. We use the state-of-art reflection model \verb'relxill' family to fit all the 9 spectra, and the spectra from two focal plane module detectors of \textit{NuSTAR} are jointly fitted for each observation. In particular, we concentrate on the results of the black hole spin parameter and the inclination of the accretion disk. Based on the analysis of the inner radius of the accretion disk, we obtain the spin parameter $a_* =0.78_{-0.04}^{+0.04}$, and the inclination angle of the inner disk $i = 29.2_{-0.5}^{+0.3}$ degrees. Furthermore, we also find that when the black hole is in the hard state, the accretion disk would show a significant truncation. The optical light curves of quiescent black hole low-mass X-ray binaries often exhibit significant non-ellipsoidal variabilities, showing the photospheric radiation of the companion star is veiled by other source of optical emission. Assessing this "veiling" effect is critical to the black hole mass measurement. Here in this work, we carry out a strictly simultaneous spectroscopic and photometric campaign on the prototype of black hole low-mass X-ray binary A0620-00. We find that for each observation epoch, the extra optical flux beyond a pure ellipsoidal modulation is positively correlated with the fraction of veiling emission, indicating the accretion disk contributes most of the non-ellipsoidal variations. Meanwhile, we also obtain a K2V spectral classification of the companion, as well as the measurements of the companion's rotational velocity $v \sin i = 83.8\pm1.9$ km s$^{-1}$ and the mass ratio between the companion and the black hole $q=0.063\pm0.004$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

As a transient X-ray binary, MAXI J1659-152 contains a black hole candidate as its compact star. MAXI J1659-152 was discovered on 2010 September 25 during its only known outburst. Previously-published studies of this outburst indicate that MAXI J1659-152 may have an extreme retrograde spin, which, if confirmed, would provide an important clue as to the origin of black hole spin. In this paper, utilizing updated dynamical binary-system parameters (i.e. the black hole mass, the orbital inclination and the source distance) provided by \cite{Torres2021}, we analyze 65 spectra of MAXI J1659-152 from \emph{RXTE}/PCA, in order to assess the spin parameter. With a final selection of 9 spectra matching our $f_{\mathrm{sc}} \lesssim 25 \%$, soft-state criteria, we apply a relativistic thin disk spectroscopic model \texttt{kerrbb2} over 3.0-45.0 keV. We find that inclination angle correlates inversely with spin, and, considering the possible values for inclination angle, we constrain spin to be $-1 < a_{*} \lesssim 0.44$ at 90\% confidence interval via X-ray continuum-fitting. We can only rule out an extreme prograde (positive) spin. We confirm that an extreme retrograde solution is possible and is not ruled out by considering accretion torques given the young age of the system., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables

Biomarker-assisted diagnosis and intervention in Alzheimer's disease (AD) may be the key to prevention breakthroughs. One of the hallmarks of AD is the accumulation of tau plaques in the human brain. However, current methods to detect tau pathology are either invasive (lumbar puncture) or quite costly and not widely available (Tau PET). In our previous work, structural MRI-based hippocampal multivariate morphometry statistics (MMS) showed superior performance as an effective neurodegenerative biomarker for preclinical AD and Patch Analysis-based Surface Correntropy-induced Sparse coding and max-pooling (PASCS-MP) has excellent ability to generate low-dimensional representations with strong statistical power for brain amyloid prediction. In this work, we apply this framework together with ridge regression models to predict Tau deposition in Braak12 and Braak34 brain regions separately. We evaluate our framework on 925 subjects from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). Each subject has one pair consisting of a PET image and MRI scan which were collected at about the same times. Humans express their opinions and emotions through multiple modalities which mainly consist of textual, acoustic and visual modalities. Prior works on multimodal sentiment analysis mostly apply Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) to model aligned multimodal sequences. However, it is unpractical to align multimodal sequences due to different sample rates for different modalities. Moreover, RNN is prone to the issues of gradient vanishing or exploding and it has limited capacity of learning long-range dependency which is the major obstacle to model unaligned multimodal sequences. In this paper, we introduce Graph Capsule Aggregation (GraphCAGE) to model unaligned multimodal sequences with graph-based neural model and Capsule Network. By converting sequence data into graph, the previously mentioned problems of RNN are avoided. In addition, the aggregation capability of Capsule Network and the graph-based structure enable our model to be interpretable and better solve the problem of long-range dependency. Experimental results suggest that GraphCAGE achieves state-of-the-art performance on two benchmark datasets with representations refined by Capsule Network and interpretation provided.

We present a definitive assessment of the role of Inverse Compton scattering of Cosmic Microwave Background photons (IC/CMB) in the context of radio galaxies. Owing to the steep increase of the CMB radiation energy density, IC/CMB is supposed to become progressively more important with respect to radio synchrotron cooling as the redshift increases. For typical energies at play, this process will up-scatter the CMB photons into the X-ray band, and is thus expected to yield a redshift-dependent, concurrent X-ray brightening and radio dimming of the jet-powered structures. Here we show how a conclusive proof of this effect hinges on high-resolution imaging data in which the extended lobes can be distinguished from the compact hot spots where synchrotron-self-Compton dominates the X-ray emission regardless of redshift. We analyze Chandra and Very Large Array data of 11 radio galaxies between 1.33 radio galaxies below <1 mJy, IC/CMB alone can not be responsible for a deficit in high-z, radio-loud AGN if--as we argue--such AGN typically have bright, compact hot spots., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables. MAXI J1820+070 is a low-mass black hole X-ray binary system with high luminosity in both optical and X-ray bands during the outburst periods. We present extensive photometry in X-ray, ultraviolet, and optical bands, as well as densely-cadenced optical spectra, covering the phase from the beginning of optical outburst to $\sim$550 days. During the rebrightening process, the optical emission preceded the X-ray by 20.80 $\pm$ 2.85 days. The spectra are characterized by blue continua and emission features of Balmer series, He I, He II lines and broad Bowen blend. The pseudo equivalent width (pEW) of emission lines are found to show anticorrelations with the X-ray flux measured at comparable phases, which is due to the increased suppression by the optical continuum. At around the X-ray peak, the full width at half maximums (FWHMs) of H$_{\beta}$ and He II $\lambda$4686 tend to stabilize at 19.4 Angstrom and 21.8 Angstrom, which corresponds to the line forming region at a radius of 1.7 and 1.3 R_sun within the disk. We further analyzed the absolute fluxes of the lines and found that the fluxes of H$_{\beta}$ and He II $\lambda$4686 show positive correlations with the X-ray flux, favoring that the irradiation model is responsible for the optical emission. However, the fact that X-ray emission experiences a dramatic flux drop at t$\sim$200 days after the outburst, while the optical flux only shows little variations suggests that additional energy such as viscous energy may contribute to the optical radiation in addition to the X-ray irradiation., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Biomarkers play an important role in early detection and intervention in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, obtaining effective biomarkers for AD is still a big challenge. In this work, we propose to use the worst transportation cost as a univariate biomarker to index cortical morphometry for tracking AD progression. The worst transportation (WT) aims to find the least economical way to transport one measure to the other, which contrasts to the optimal transportation (OT) that finds the most economical way between measures. To compute the WT cost, we generalize the Brenier theorem for the OT map to the WT map, and show that the WT map is the gradient of a concave function satisfying the Monge-Ampere equation. We also develop an efficient algorithm to compute the WT map based on computational geometry. We apply the algorithm to analyze cortical shape difference between dementia due to AD and normal aging individuals. Cognitive decline due to Alzheimer's disease (AD) is closely associated with brain structure alterations captured by structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI). It supports the validity to develop sMRI-based univariate neurodegeneration biomarkers (UNB). However, existing UNB work either fails to model large group variances or does not capture AD dementia (ADD) induced changes. We propose a novel low-rank and sparse subspace decomposition method capable of stably quantifying the morphological changes induced by ADD. Specifically, we propose a numerically efficient rank minimization mechanism to extract group common structure and impose regularization constraints to encode the original 3D morphometry connectivity. Further, we generate regions-of-interest (ROI) with group difference study between common subspaces of $A\beta+$ AD and $A\beta-$ cognitively unimpaired (CU) groups. A univariate morphometry index (UMI) is constructed from these ROIs by summarizing individual morphological characteristics weighted by normalized difference between $A\beta+$ AD and $A\beta-$ CU groups. We use hippocampal surface radial distance feature to compute the UMIs and validate our work in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) cohort. With hippocampal UMIs, the estimated minimum sample sizes needed to detect a 25$\%$ reduction in the mean annual change with 80$\%$ power and two-tailed $P=0.05$ are 116, 279 and 387 for the longitudinal $A\beta+$ AD, $A\beta+$ mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and $A\beta+$ CU groups, respectively. Additionally, for MCI patients, UMIs well correlate with hazard ratio of conversion to AD ($4.3$, $95\%$ CI=$2.3-8.2$) within 18 months. High Q optical resonators are a key component for ultra-narrow linewidth lasers, frequency stabilization, precision spectroscopy and quantum applications. Integration of these resonators in a photonic waveguide wafer-scale platform is key to reducing their cost, size and power as well as sensitivity to environmental disturbances. However, to date, the intrinsic Q of integrated all-waveguide resonators has been relegated to below 150 Million. Here, we report an all-waveguide Si3N4 resonator with an intrinsic Q of 422 Million and a 3.4 Billion absorption loss limited Q. The resonator has a 453 kHz intrinsic linewidth and 906 kHz loaded linewidth, with a finesse of 3005. The corresponding linear loss of 0.060 dB/m is the lowest reported to date for an all-waveguide design with deposited upper cladding oxide. These are the highest intrinsic and absorption loss limited Q factors and lowest linewidth reported to date for a photonic integrated all-waveguide resonator. This level of performance is achieved through a careful reduction of scattering and absorption loss components. We quantify, simulate and measure the various loss contributions including scattering and absorption including surface-state dangling bonds that we believe are responsible in part for absorption. In addition to the ultra-high Q and narrow linewidth, the resonator has a large optical mode area and volume, both critical for ultra-low laser linewidths and ultra-stable, ultra-low frequency noise reference cavities. These results demonstrate the performance of bulk optic and etched resonators can be realized in a photonic integrated solution, paving the way towards photonic integration compatible Billion Q cavities for precision scientific systems and applications such as nonlinear optics, atomic clocks, quantum photonics and high-capacity fiber communications systems on-chip., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

The rest-frame UV/optical variability of the quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 is used to test the Corona-Heated Accretion-disk Reprocessing (CHAR) model of Sun et al. 2020. We adopt our CHAR model and the observed black-hole masses ($M_{\mathrm{BH}}$) and luminosities ($L$) to generate mock light curves that share the same measurement noise and sampling as the real observations. Without any fine-tuning, our CHAR model can satisfactorily reproduce the observed ensemble structure functions for different $M_{\mathrm{BH}}$, $L$, and rest-frame wavelengths. Our analyses reveal that a luminosity-dependent bolometric correction is disfavored over the constant bolometric correction for UV/optical luminosities. We investigate systematically the X-ray emission from type 1 quasars using a sample of 1825 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) non-broad absorption line (non-BAL) quasars with Chandra archival observations. A significant correlation is found between the X-ray-to-optical power-law slope parameter ($\alpha_{\rm OX}$) and the 2500 $\r{A}$ monochromatic luminosity ($L_{\rm 2500~\r{A}}$), and the X-ray weakness of a quasar is assessed via the deviation of its $\alpha_{\rm OX}$ value from that expected from this relation. We demonstrate the existence of a population of non-BAL X-ray weak quasars, and the fractions of quasars that are X-ray weak by factors of $\ge6$ and $\ge10$ are $5.8\pm0.7\%$ and $2.7\pm0.5\%$, respectively. We classify the X-ray weak quasars (X-ray weak by factors of $\ge6$) into three categories based on their optical spectral features: weak emission-line quasars (WLQs; CIV REW $<16~\r{A}$), red quasars ($\Delta(g-i)>0.2$), and unclassified X-ray weak quasars. The X-ray weak fraction of $35_{- 9}^{+12}\%$ within the WLQ population is significantly higher than that within non-WLQs, confirming previous findings that WLQs represent one population of X-ray weak quasars. The X-ray weak fraction of $13_{- 3}^{+ 5}\%$ within the red quasar population is also considerably higher than that within the normal quasar population. We report on deep Chandra X-ray Telescope imaging observations of 4C 63.20, one of the few known radio galaxies at z>3.5. The X-ray counterpart is resolved into a core plus two off-nuclear sources that (combined) account for close to 30% of the total X-ray flux. Their morphology and orientation are consistent with a diffuse, lobe-like nature, albeit compact hotspots cannot be ruled out. The broadband spectral energy distribution of 4C 63.20 can be reproduced with a jet model where the majority of the radio flux can be ascribed to synchrotron emission from the hotspots, whereas the (non-nuclear) X-ray emission is produced via Inverse Compton (IC) off of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) photons within the extended lobes. This scenario is broadly consistent with the expectation from highly magnetized lobes in a hotter CMB, and supports the view that IC/CMB may quench less extreme radio lobes at high redshifts., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Radio-loud quasars (RLQs) are more X-ray luminous than predicted by the X-ray-optical/UV relation (i.e. $L_\mathrm{x}\propto L_\mathrm{uv}^\gamma$) for radio-quiet quasars (RQQs). The excess X-ray emission depends on the radio-loudness parameter ($R$) and radio spectral slope ($\alpha_\mathrm{r}$). We construct a uniform sample of 729 optically selected RLQs with high fractions of X-ray detections and $\alpha_\mathrm{r}$ measurements.We find that steep-spectrum radio quasars (SSRQs; $\alpha_\mathrm{r}\le-0.5$) follow a quantitatively similar $L_\mathrm{x}\propto L_\mathrm{uv}^\gamma$ relation as that for RQQs, suggesting a common coronal origin for the X-ray emission of both SSRQs and RQQs. However, the corresponding intercept of SSRQs is larger than that for RQQs and increases with $R$, suggesting a connection between the radio jets and the configuration of the accretion flow. Flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs; $\alpha_\mathrm{r}>-0.5$) are generally more X-ray luminous than SSRQs at given $L_\mathrm{uv}$ and $R$, likely involving more physical processes. The emergent picture is different from that commonly assumed where the excess X-ray emission of RLQs is attributed to the jets. We thus perform model selection to comparecritically these different interpretations, which prefers the coronal scenario with a corona-jet connection. A distinct jet component is likely important for only a small portion of FSRQs.The corona-jet, disk-corona, and disk-jet connections of RLQs are likely driven by independent physical processes. Furthermore, the corona-jet connection implies that small-scale processesin the vicinity of SMBHs, probably associated with the magnetic flux/topology instead of black-hole spin, are controlling the radio-loudness of quasars., Comment: 30 pages, 17 figures, published in MNRAS

The mass, origin and evolutionary stage of the binary system LB-1 has been the subject of intense debate, following the claim that it hosts an $\sim$70$M_{\odot}$ black hole, in stark contrast with the expectations for stellar remnants in the Milky Way. We conducted a high-resolution, phase-resolved spectroscopic study of the near-infrared Paschen lines in this system, using the 3.5-m telescope at Calar Alto Observatory. We find that Pa$\beta$ and Pa$\gamma$ (after proper subtraction of the stellar absorption component) are well fitted with a standard double-peaked model, typical of disk emission. We measured the velocity shifts of the red and blue peaks at 28 orbital phases: the line center has an orbital motion in perfect antiphase with the stellar motion, and the radial velocity amplitude ranges from 8 to 13 km/s for different choices of lines and profile modelling. We interpret this curve as proof that the disk is tracing the orbital motion of the primary, ruling out the circumbinary disk and the hierarchical triple scenarios. The phase-averaged peak-to-peak half-separation (proxy for the projected rotational velocity of the outer disk) is $\sim$70 km s$^{-1}$, larger than the stellar orbital velocity and also inconsistent with a circumbinary disk. From those results, we infer a primary mass 4--8 times higher than the secondary mass. Moreover, we show that the ratio of the blue and red peaks (V/R intensity ratio) has a sinusoidal behaviour in phase with the secondary star, which can be interpreted as the effect of external irradiation by the secondary star on the outer disk. Finally, we briefly discuss our findings in the context of alternative scenarios recently proposed for LB-1. We present the findings of "The Alzheimer's Disease Prediction Of Longitudinal Evolution" (TADPOLE) Challenge, which compared the performance of 92 algorithms from 33 international teams at predicting the future trajectory of 219 individuals at risk of Alzheimer's disease. Challenge participants were required to make a prediction, for each month of a 5-year future time period, of three key outcomes: clinical diagnosis, Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale Cognitive Subdomain (ADAS-Cog13), and total volume of the ventricles. The methods used by challenge participants included multivariate linear regression, machine learning methods such as support vector machines and deep neural networks, as well as disease progression models. No single submission was best at predicting all three outcomes. For clinical diagnosis and ventricle volume prediction, the best algorithms strongly outperform simple baselines in predictive ability. However, for ADAS-Cog13 no single submitted prediction method was significantly better than random guesswork. Two ensemble methods based on taking the mean and median over all predictions, obtained top scores on almost all tasks. Better than average performance at diagnosis prediction was generally associated with the additional inclusion of features from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). We report the discovery of an extreme X-ray flux rise (by a factor of > 20) of the weak-line quasar SDSS J153913.47+395423.4 (hereafter SDSS J1539+3954) at z = 1.935. SDSS J1539+3954 is the most-luminous object among radio-quiet type 1 AGNs where such dramatic X-ray variability has been observed. Before the X-ray flux rise, SDSS J1539+3954 appeared X-ray weak compared with the expectation from its UV flux; after the rise, the ratio of its X-ray flux and UV flux is consistent with the majority of the AGN population. We also present a contemporaneous HET spectrum of SDSS J1539+3954, which demonstrates that its UV continuum level remains generally unchanged despite the dramatic increase in the X-ray flux, and its C iv emission line remains weak. The dramatic change only observed in the X-ray flux is consistent with a shielding model, where a thick inner accretion disk can block our line of sight to the central X-ray source. This thick inner accretion disk can also block the nuclear ionizing photons from reaching the high-ionization broad emission-line region, so that weak high-ionization emission lines are observed. Under this scenario, the extreme X-ray variability event may be caused by slight variations in the thickness of the disk. All stellar mass black holes have hitherto been identified by X-rays emitted by gas that is accreting onto the black hole from a companion star. These systems are all binaries with black holes below 30 M$_{\odot}$$^{1-4}$. Theory predicts, however, that X-ray emitting systems form a minority of the total population of star-black hole binaries$^{5,6}$. When the black hole is not accreting gas, it can be found through radial velocity measurements of the motion of the companion star. Here we report radial velocity measurements of a Galactic star, LB-1, which is a B-type star, taken over two years. We find that the motion of the B-star and an accompanying H$\alpha$ emission line require the presence of a dark companion with a mass of $68^{+11}_{-13}$ M$_{\odot}$, which can only be a black hole. The long orbital period of 78.9 days shows that this is a wide binary system. Most dynamically confirmed stellar-mass black holes and the candidates were originally selected from X-ray outbursts. In the present work, we search for black hole candidates in the LAMOST survey by using the spectra along with photometry from the ASAS-SN survey, where the orbital period of the binary may be revealed by the periodic light curve, such as the ellipsoidal modulation type. Our sample consists of 9 binaries, where each source contains a giant star with large radial velocity variation ($\Delta V_{\rm R} > 70~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$) and periods known from light curves. We focus on the 9 sources with long periods ($T_{\rm ph} > 5$ days) and evaluate the mass $M_2$ of the optically invisible companion. Since the observed $\Delta V_{\rm R}$ from only a few repeating spectroscopic observations is a lower limit of the real amplitude, the real mass $M_2$ can be significantly higher than the current evaluation. It is likely an efficient method to place constraints on $M_2$ by combining $\Delta V_{\rm R}$ from LAMOST and $T_{\rm ph}$ from ASAS-SN, particularly by the ongoing LAMOST Medium Resolution Survey., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal

The Gamma-Ray Integrated Detectors (GRID) is a space mission concept dedicated to monitoring the transient gamma-ray sky in the energy range from 10 keV to 2 MeV using scintillation detectors onboard CubeSats in low Earth orbits. The primary targets of GRID are the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the local universe. The scientific goal of GRID is, in synergy with ground-based gravitational wave (GW) detectors such as LIGO and VIRGO, to accumulate a sample of GRBs associated with the merger of two compact stars and study jets and related physics of those objects. It also involves observing and studying other gamma-ray transients such as long GRBs, soft gamma-ray repeaters, terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, and solar flares. With multiple CubeSats in various orbits, GRID is unaffected by the Earth occultation and serves as a full-time and all-sky monitor. Assuming a horizon of 200 Mpc for ground-based GW detectors, we expect to see a few associated GW-GRB events per year. With about 10 CubeSats in operation, GRID is capable of localizing a faint GRB like 170817A with a 90% error radius of about 10 degrees, through triangulation and flux modulation. GRID is proposed and developed by students, with considerable contribution from undergraduate students, and will remain operated as a student project in the future. The current GRID collaboration involves more than 20 institutes and keeps growing. We propose a method to search for stellar-mass black hole (BH) candidates with giant companions from spectroscopic observations. Based on the stellar spectra of LAMOST Data Release 6, we obtain a sample of seven giants in binaries with large radial velocity variation $\Delta V_R > 80~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$. With the effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity provided by LAMOST, and the parallax given by {\it Gaia}, we can estimate the mass and radius of the giant, and therefore evaluate the possible mass of the optically invisible star in the binary. We show that the sources in our sample are potential BH candidates, and are worthy of dynamical measurement by further spectroscopic observations. We have investigated the jet-linked \mbox{X-ray} emission from highly radio-loud quasars (HRLQs; $\log R>2.5$) at high redshift. We studied the X-ray properties of 15 HRLQs at $z>4$, using new {\it Chandra} observations for six objects and archival {\it XMM-Newton} and {\it Swift} observations for the other nine. We focused on testing the apparent enhancement of jet-linked \mbox{X-ray} emission from HRLQs at $z>4$. Utilizing an enlarged (24 objects) optically flux-limited sample with complete X-ray coverage, we confirmed that HRLQs at $z>4$ have enhanced X-ray emission relative to that of HRLQs at $z\approx$ 1--2 with matched UV/optical and radio luminosity, at a \mbox{4.0--4.6}~$\sigma$ level; the X-ray enhancements are confirmed considering both two-point spectral indices and inspection of broad-band spectral energy distributions. The typical factor of enhancement is revised to $1.9^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$, which is smaller than but consistent with previous results. A fractional IC/CMB model can still explain our results at high redshift, which puts tighter constraints on the fraction of IC/CMB X-rays at lower redshifts, assuming the physical properties of quasar jets do not have a strong redshift dependence. The connected door space is an enigmatic topological space in which every proper nonempty subset is either open or closed, but not both. This paper provides an elementary proof of the classification theorem of connected door spaces. More importantly, we show that connected door topologies can be viewed as solutions of the valuation $f(A)+f(B)=f(A\cup B)+f(A\cap B)$ and the equation $f(A)+f(B)=f(A\cup B)$, respectively. We present XMM-Newton imaging spectroscopy of ten weak emission-line quasars (WLQs) at $0.928\leq z \leq 3.767$, six of which are radio quiet and four which are radio intermediate. The new X-ray data enabled us to measure the power-law photon index, at rest-frame energies $>2$ keV, in each source with relatively high accuracy. These measurements allowed us to confirm previous reports that WLQs have steeper X-ray spectra, suggesting higher accretion rates with respect to 'typical' quasars. A comparison between the photon indices of our radio-quiet WLQs and those of a control sample of 85 sources shows that the first are significantly higher, at the >~$3\sigma$ level. Collectively, the four radio-intermediate WLQs have lower photon indices with respect to the six radio-quiet WLQs, as may be expected if the spectra of the first group are contaminated by X-ray emission from a jet. Therefore, in the absence of significant jet emission along our line of sight, these results are in agreement with the idea that WLQs constitute the extreme high end of the accretion rate distribution in quasars. We detect soft excess emission in our lowest-redshift radio-quiet WLQ, in agreement with previous findings suggesting that the prominence of this feature is associated with a high accretion rate. We have not detected signatures of Compton reflection, Fe K$\alpha$ lines, or strong variability between two X-ray epochs in any of our WLQs, which can be attributed to their relatively high luminosity., Comment: 14 pages (emulateapj), 7 figures. The demand for high-performance chip-scale lasers has driven rapid growth in integrated photonics. The creation of such low-noise laser sources is critical for emerging on-chip applications, ranging from coherent optical communications, photonic microwave oscillators remote sensing and optical rotational sensors. While Brillouin lasers are a promising solution to these challenges, new strategies are needed to create robust, compact, low power and low cost Brillouin laser technologies through wafer-scale integration. To date, chip-scale Brillouin lasers have remained elusive due to the difficulties in realization of these lasers on a commercial integration platform. In this paper, we demonstrate, for the first time, monolithically integrated Brillouin lasers using a wafer-scale process based on an ultra-low loss Si3N4/SiO2 waveguide platform. Cascading of stimulated Brillouin lasing to 10 Stokes orders was observed in an integrated bus-coupled resonator with a loaded Q factor exceeding 28 million. We experimentally quantify the laser performance, including threshold, slope efficiency and cascading dynamics, and compare the results with theory. The large mode volume integrated resonator and gain medium supports a TE-only resonance and unique 2.72 GHz free spectral range, essential for high performance integrated Brillouin lasing. The laser is based on a non-acoustic guiding design that supplies a broad Brillouin gain bandwidth. Characteristics for high performance lasing are demonstrated due to large intra-cavity optical power and low lasing threshold power. Consistent laser performance is reported for multiple chips across multiple wafers. In an effort to understand the cause of the apparent depletion in the number density of radio-loud AGNs at $z>3$, this work investigates the viability of the so-called Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) quenching mechanism of intrinsically jetted, high-z AGNs, whereby Inverse Compton scattering of CMB photons off electrons within the extended lobes results in a substantial dimming of the lobe synchrotron emission at GHz frequencies, while simultaneously boosting their diffuse X-ray signal. We focus on five $z>3.5$ radio galaxies that have sufficiently deep Chandra exposure (> 50 ks) to warrant a meaningful investigation of any extended X-ray emission. For those objects with evidence for statistically significant extended X-ray lobes (4C 41.17 and 4C 03.24), we combine the Chandra measurements with literature data at lower frequencies to assemble the systems' Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs), and utilize state-of-the-art SED modelling (Ghisellini et al. 2015) -- including emission from the disk, torus, jet, hotspots, and lobes -- to infer their physical parameters. For both radio galaxies, the magnetic energy density in the hotspots is found to exceed the energy density in CMB photons, wheres the opposite is true for the lobes. This implies that any extended synchrotron emission likely originates from the hotspots themselves, rather than the lobes. Conversely, Inverse Compton scattering of CMB photons dominates the extended X-ray emission from the lobes, which are effectively "radio-quenched". As a result, CMB quenching is effective in these systems in spite of the fact that the observed X-ray to radio luminosity ratio does not bear the signature $(1+z)^4$ dependence of the CMB energy density., Comment: MNRAS in press; 17 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables

We present the results of a photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the Galactic Bulge Survey X-ray source CXOGBS J174954.5-294335 (hereafter, referred to as CX19). CX19 is a long period, eclipsing intermediate polar type cataclysmic variable with broad, single-peaked Balmer and Paschen emission lines along with HeII $\lambda4686$ and Bowen blend emission features. With coverage of one full and two partial eclipses and archival photometry, we determine the ephemeris for CX19 to be HJD(eclipse) = 2455691.8581(5) + 0.358704(2)$\times$N. We also recovered the white dwarf spin period of P$_{\rm spin}$ = 503.32(3) seconds which gives a P$_{\rm spin}$/P$_{\rm orb}$ = 0.016(6), comparable to several confirmed, long period intermediate polars. CX19 also shows a clear X-ray eclipse in the 0.3-8.0 keV range observed with Chandra. Two optical outbursts were observed lasting between 6-8 hours (lower limits) reaching $\sim$1.3 mags in amplitude. The outbursts, both in duration and magnitude, the accretion disc dominated spectra and hard X-ray emission are reminiscent of the intermediate polar V1223 Sgr sharing many of the same characteristics. If we assume a main sequence companion, we estimate the donor to be an early G-type star and find a minimum distance of $d \approx$ 2.1 kpc and a 0.5-10.0 keV X-ray luminosity upper limit of 2.0 $\times$ 10$^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Such an X-ray luminosity is consistent with a white dwarf accretor in a magnetic cataclysmic variable system. As part of the Chandra Galactic Bulge Survey (GBS), we present a catalogue of optical sources in the GBS footprint. This consists of two regions centered at Galactic latitude b = 1.5 degrees above and below the Galactic Centre, spanning (l x b) = (6x1) degrees. The catalogue consists of 2 or more epochs of observations for each line of sight in r', i' and H{\alpha} filters. It is complete down to r' = 20.2 and i' = 19.2 mag; the mean 5{\sigma} depth is r' = 22.5 and i' = 21.1 mag. The mean root-mean-square residuals of the astrometric solutions is 0.04 arcsec. We cross-correlate this optical catalogue with the 1640 unique X-ray sources detected in Chandra observations of the GBS area, and find candidate optical counterparts to 1480 X-ray sources. We use a false alarm probability analysis to estimate the contamination by interlopers, and expect ~ 10 per cent of optical counterparts to be chance alignments. To determine the most likely counterpart for each X-ray source, we compute the likelihood ratio for all optical sources within the 4{\sigma} X-ray error circle. This analysis yields 1480 potential counterparts (~ 90 per cent of the sample). 584 counterparts have saturated photometry (r'<17, i'<16), indicating these objects are likely foreground sources and the real counterparts. 171 candidate counterparts are detected only in the i'-band.
