Current formal verification of security protocols relies on specialized researchers and complex tools, inaccessible to protocol designers who informally evaluate their work with emulators. This paper addresses this gap by embedding symbolic analysis into the design process. Our approach implements the Dolev-Yao attack model using a variant of CSP based on Interaction Trees (ITrees) to compile protocols into animators -- executable programs that designers can use for debugging and inspection. To guarantee the soundness of our compilation, we mechanised our approach in the theorem prover Isabelle/HOL. As traditionally done with symbolic tools, we refer to the Diffie-Hellman key exchange and the Needham-Schroeder public-key protocol (and Lowe's patched variant). We demonstrate how our animator can easily reveal the mechanics of attacks and verify corrections. The demands of ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) in ``NextG" cellular networks necessitate innovative approaches for efficient resource utilisation. The current literature on 6G O-RAN primarily addresses improved mobile broadband (eMBB) performance or URLLC latency optimisation individually, often neglecting the intricate balance required to optimise both simultaneously under practical constraints. This paper addresses this gap by proposing a DRL-based resource allocation framework integrated with meta-learning to manage eMBB and URLLC services adaptively. Our approach efficiently allocates heterogeneous network resources, aiming to maximise energy efficiency (EE) while minimising URLLC latency, even under varying environmental conditions. We highlight the critical importance of accurately estimating the traffic distribution flow in the multi-connectivity (MC) scenario, as its uncertainty can significantly degrade EE. The development of sustainable transportation and communication systems requires an increase in both energy density and capacity retention of Li-batteries. Using substrates forming a solid solution with body centered cubic Li enhances the cycle stability of anode-less batteries. However, it remains unclear how the substrate microstructure affects the lithiation behavior. Here, we deploy a correlative, near-atomic scale probing approach through combined ion- and electron-microscopy to examine the distribution of Li in Li-Ag diffusion couples as model system. We reveal that Li regions with over 93.8% at.% nucleate within Ag at random high angle grain boundaries, whereas grain interiors are not lithiated. We evidence the role of kinetics and mechanical constraint from the microstructure over equilibrium thermodynamics in dictating the lithiation process. The findings suggest that grain size and grain boundary character are critical to enhance the electrochemical performance of interlayers/electrodes, particularly for improving lithiation kinetics and hence reducing dendrite formation.

The structural and magnetic properties of Ge0.5Mn0.5Co2O4 (GMCO) have been investigated in detail utilizing neutron powder diffraction (NPD), x-ray diffraction (XRD), DC magnetometry, and heat capacity analysis and compared with GeCo2O4. Despite both compounds exhibiting a cubic structure at room temperature, a substantial difference on low temperature structural properties have been observed for GMCO, indicating the effect of Mn substitution on crystal structure. The magnetic and heat capacity data reveal a ferrimagnetic ordering around 108 K in GMCO. A minor secondary phase is confirmed which undergoes long range AFM ordering at further lower temperatures. This secondary phase remains undetected in XRD due to identical lattice parameters. Furthermore, the analysis of heat capacity data indicates a broadening of the high-temperature transition, attributing to the short-range correlation persisting up to higher temperatures. The estimated magnetic entropy amounts is 63% of the value expected for GMCO. The missing entropy is likely linked with the short-range magnetic correlations persisting well above the transition temperature. Cation distribution at the A and B sites has been estimated in GMCO using NPD. Magnetic structures are also confirmed in the main phase as well as in the secondary phase using NPD analysis. The high-temperature transition corresponds to the ferrimagnetic ordering of A and B site cations in the main phase. A collinear ferrimagnetic arrangement of A and B site spins aligned parallel to c axis is observed. The average values of A and B site moments in the ferrimagnetic phase at 5 K are 2.31(3) and 1.82(3)mB, respectively, with the temperature dependence of moments following the expected power law behavior. The low-temperature ordering is attributed to the antiferromagnetic ordering of B site ions associated with the secondary phase, something similar to GeCo2O4., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

This paper introduces v0.5 of the AI Safety Benchmark, which has been created by the MLCommons AI Safety Working Group. The AI Safety Benchmark has been designed to assess the safety risks of AI systems that use chat-tuned language models. We introduce a principled approach to specifying and constructing the benchmark, which for v0.5 covers only a single use case (an adult chatting to a general-purpose assistant in English), and a limited set of personas (i.e., typical users, malicious users, and vulnerable users). We created a new taxonomy of 13 hazard categories, of which 7 have tests in the v0.5 benchmark. We plan to release version 1.0 of the AI Safety Benchmark by the end of 2024. The v1.0 benchmark will provide meaningful insights into the safety of AI systems. However, the v0.5 benchmark should not be used to assess the safety of AI systems. We have sought to fully document the limitations, flaws, and challenges of v0.5. This release of v0.5 of the AI Safety Benchmark includes (1) a principled approach to specifying and constructing the benchmark, which comprises use cases, types of systems under test (SUTs), language and context, personas, tests, and test items; (2) a taxonomy of 13 hazard categories with definitions and subcategories; (3) tests for seven of the hazard categories, each comprising a unique set of test items, i.e., prompts. There are 43,090 test items in total, which we created with templates; (4) a grading system for AI systems against the benchmark; (5) an openly available platform, and downloadable tool, called ModelBench that can be used to evaluate the safety of AI systems on the benchmark; (6) an example evaluation report which benchmarks the performance of over a dozen openly available chat-tuned language models; (7) a test specification for the benchmark.

Autonomous systems are becoming increasingly prevalent in new vehicles. Due to their environmental friendliness and their remarkable capability to significantly enhance road safety, these vehicles have gained widespread recognition and acceptance in recent years. Automated Driving Systems (ADS) are intricate systems that incorporate a multitude of sensors and actuators to interact with the environment autonomously, pervasively, and interactively. Consequently, numerous studies are currently underway to keep abreast of these rapid developments. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in ADS technologies. It provides in-depth insights into the detailed information about how data and information flow in the distributed system, including autonomous vehicles and other various supporting services and entities. Data validation and system requirements are emphasised, such as security, privacy, scalability, and data ownership, in accordance with regulatory standards. Heightened interest from nation states to perform content censorship make it evermore critical to identify the impact of censorship efforts on the Internet. We undertake a study of Internet architecture, capturing the state of Internet topology with greater completeness than existing state-of-the-art. We describe our methodology for this, including the tooling we create to collect and process data from a wide range of sources. We analyse this data to find key patterns in nation states with higher censorship, discovering a funnelling effect wherein higher Internet censorship effort is reflected in a constraining effect on a state's Internet routing architecture. However, there are a small number of nation states that do not follow this trend, for which we provide an analysis and explanation, demonstrating a relationship between geographical factors in addition to geopolitics. In summary, our work provides a deeper understanding of how these censorship measures impact the overall functioning and dynamics of the Internet.

Automated Driving Systems (ADSs) are being manufactured at an accelerated rate, leading to improvements in traffic safety, reduced energy consumption, pollution, and congestion. ADS relies on various data streams from onboard sensors, external road infrastructure, and other vehicles to make driving decisions. For effective traffic accident reconstruction, investigators must produce, collect, store, and access real-time data. To ensure meaningful investigation, the data used by investigators must be accurate and maintain its integrity. Given the imperative for advanced wireless networks in the next generation and the rise of real-time applications within wireless communication, there is a notable focus on investigating data rate performance across various fading scenarios. This research delved into analyzing the effective throughput of the shadowed Beaulieu-Xie (SBX) composite fading channel using the PDF-based approach. To get the simplified relationship between the performance parameter and channel parameters, the low-SNR and the high-SNR approximation of the effective rate are also provided. The proposed formulations are evaluated for different values of system parameters to study their impact on the effective throughput. Also, the impact of the delay parameter on the EC is investigated. As the prevalence of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices becomes more and more dominant, so too do the associated management and security challenges. One such challenge is the exploitation of vulnerable devices for recruitment into botnets, which can be used to carry out Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks. The recent Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) standard has been proposed as a way to mitigate this problem, by allowing manufacturers to define communication patterns that are permitted for their IoT devices, with enforcement at the gateway home router. In this paper, we present a novel integrated system implementation that uses a MUD manager (osMUD) to parse an extended set of MUD rules, which also allow for rate-limiting of traffic and for setting appropriate thresholds. Additionally, we present two new backends for MUD rule enforcement, one based on eBPF and the other based on the Linux standard iptables. Ni$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{8}$ is a pyroelectric honeycomb antiferromagnet exhibiting peculiar changes of its electric polarization at magnetic transitions. Ni$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{8}$ stands out from the isostructural magnetic compounds, showing an anomalously low magnetic transition temperature and unique magnetic anisotropy. We determine the magnetic structure of Ni$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{8}$ utilizing high-resolution powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction. A noncollinear stripy antiferromagnetic order is found in the honeycomb planes. The magnetic space group is \textit{P$_C$na}2$_1$. The in-plane magnetic connection is of the stripy type both for the $ab$-plane and the $c$-axis spin components. This is a simpler connection than the one proposed previously. The ferromagnetic interlayer order of the $c$-axis spin components in our model is also distinct. The magnetic anisotropy of Ni$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{8}$ is characterized by orientation-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements on a single crystal, consistent with neutron diffraction analysis. The local magnetoelectric tensor analysis using our magnetic models provides new insights into its magnetoelectric coupling and polarization. Thus, our results deliver essential information for understanding both the unusual magnetoelectric properties of Ni$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{8}$ and the prospects for observation of exotic nonreciprocal, Hall, and magnonic effects characteristic to this compound family., Comment: 28 pages, 23 figures, 14 tables

We present a molecular orbital candidate Ba$_{4}$TaMn$_{3}$O$_{12}$ with a face-sharing octahedra trimer, by comparing it with a related compound Ba$_{4}$NbMn$_{3}$O$_{12}$. The synthesis of the polycrystalline powder is optimized by suppressing the secondary impurity phase via x-ray diffraction. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on the optimized samples reveal a weak magnetic hysteresis with magnetic transitions consistent with heat capacity results. The effective magnetic moments from susceptibility indicate a strongly coupled $S=2$ antiferromagnetic trimer at around room temperature, whereas the estimated magnetic entropy from heat capacity suggests the localized $S=3/2$ timer. These results can be explainable by a partial molecular orbital state, in which three $t_{2g}$ electrons are localized in each Mn ion and one $e_{g}$ electron is delocalized over two-end Mn ions of the trimer based on density functional theory calculations. This unconventional 3$d$ orbital state is comprehended as a consequence of competition between the hybrid interatomic orbitals within the Mn trimer and the local moment formation by on-site Coulomb correlations., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables

Advancements in wireless communication and the increased accessibility to low-cost sensing and data processing IoT technologies have increased the research and development of urban monitoring systems. Most smart city research projects rely on deploying proprietary IoT testbeds for indoor and outdoor data collection. Such testbeds typically rely on a three-tier architecture composed of the Endpoint, the Edge, and the Cloud. Managing the system's operation whilst considering the security and privacy challenges that emerge, such as data privacy controls, network security, and security updates on the devices, is challenging. This work presents a systematic study of the challenges of developing, deploying and managing urban monitoring testbeds, as experienced in a series of urban monitoring research projects, followed by an analysis of the relevant literature. By identifying the challenges in the various projects and organising them under the V-model development lifecycle levels, we provide a reference guide for future projects. Interactions between lecturers and students are the key to learning in the higher education environment. In this paper, the investigation pursues two different contexts to understand these interactions and the impact of anonymity and privacy in different interactions in the Computer Science (CS) department. The first context "different interaction between a lecturer and students" is investigated using phenomenological research approach by interviewing lecturer in CS ($N_a = 5$). The second context "the significance of anonymity and privacy in interactions" is investigated using a quantitative and qualitative questionnaire-based research method using an online student questionnaire ($N_b = 53$). The study finds a large gap between students' perception of preferred communication methods and the use of the same communication method. From the second context study, it is evident that "anonymity and privacy" in online surveys and module evaluations are preferred by all student participants, thus supporting diversity and inclusivity., Comment: 15 pages

Edge computing has gained attention in recent years due to the adoption of many Internet of Things (IoT) applications in domestic, industrial and wild settings. The resiliency and reliability requirements of these applications vary from non-critical (best delivery efforts) to safety-critical with time-bounded guarantees. The network connectivity of IoT edge devices remains the central critical component that needs to meet the time-bounded Quality of Service (QoS) and fault-tolerance guarantees of the applications. Therefore, in this work, we systematically investigate how to meet IoT applications mixed-criticality QoS requirements in multi-communication networks. We (i) present the network resiliency requirements of IoT applications by defining a system model (ii) analyse and evaluate the bandwidth, latency, throughput, maximum packet size of many state-of-the-art LPWAN technologies, such as Sigfox, LoRa, and LTE (CAT-M1/NB-IoT) and Wi-Fi, (iii) implement and evaluate an adaptive system Resilient Edge and Criticality-Aware Best Fit (CABF) resource allocation algorithm to meet the application resiliency requirements using Raspberry Pi 4 and Pycom FiPy development board having five multi-communication networks. Medical AI has tremendous potential to advance healthcare by supporting the evidence-based practice of medicine, personalizing patient treatment, reducing costs, and improving provider and patient experience. We argue that unlocking this potential requires a systematic way to measure the performance of medical AI models on large-scale heterogeneous data. To meet this need, we are building MedPerf, an open framework for benchmarking machine learning in the medical domain. MedPerf will enable federated evaluation in which models are securely distributed to different facilities for evaluation, thereby empowering healthcare organizations to assess and verify the performance of AI models in an efficient and human-supervised process, while prioritizing privacy. We describe the current challenges healthcare and AI communities face, the need for an open platform, the design philosophy of MedPerf, its current implementation status, and our roadmap. We call for researchers and organizations to join us in creating the MedPerf open benchmarking platform.

Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices are known to be the source of many security problems, and as such, they would greatly benefit from automated management. This requires robustly identifying devices so that appropriate network security policies can be applied. We address this challenge by exploring how to accurately identify IoT devices based on their network behavior, while leveraging approaches previously proposed by other researchers. We compare the accuracy of four different previously proposed machine learning models (tree-based and neural network-based) for identifying IoT devices. We use packet trace data collected over a period of six months from a large IoT test-bed. We show that, while all models achieve high accuracy when evaluated on the same dataset as they were trained on, their accuracy degrades over time, when evaluated on data collected outside the training set. We show that on average the models' accuracy degrades after a couple of weeks by up to 40 percentage points (on average between 12 and 21 percentage points). Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices are known to be the source of many security problems, and as such they would greatly benefit from automated management. This requires robustly identifying devices so that appropriate network security policies can be applied. We address this challenge by exploring how to accurately identify IoT devices based on their network behavior, using resources available at the edge of the network. In this paper, we compare the accuracy of five different machine learning models (tree-based and neural network-based) for identifying IoT devices by using packet trace data from a large IoT test-bed, showing that all models need to be updated over time to avoid significant degradation in accuracy. In order to effectively update the models, we find that it is necessary to use data gathered from the deployment environment, e.g., the household. We therefore evaluate our approach using hardware resources and data sources representative of those that would be available at the edge of the network, such as in an IoT deployment. We show that updating neural network-based models at the edge is feasible, as they require low computational and memory resources and their structure is amenable to being updated. The popularity of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices makes it increasingly important to be able to fingerprint them, for example in order to detect if there are misbehaving or even malicious IoT devices in one's network. The aim of this paper is to provide a systematic categorisation of machine learning augmented techniques that can be used for fingerprinting IoT devices. This can serve as a baseline for comparing various IoT fingerprinting mechanisms, so that network administrators can choose one or more mechanisms that are appropriate for monitoring and maintaining their network. We carried out an extensive literature review of existing papers on fingerprinting IoT devices -- paying close attention to those with machine learning features. This is followed by an extraction of important and comparable features among the mechanisms outlined in those papers. As a result, we came up with a key set of terminologies that are relevant both in the fingerprinting context and in the IoT domain. This enabled us to construct a framework called IDWork, which can be used for categorising existing IoT fingerprinting mechanisms in a way that will facilitate a coherent and fair comparison of these mechanisms. We found that the majority of the IoT fingerprinting mechanisms take a passive approach -- mainly through network sniffing -- instead of being intrusive and interactive with the device of interest. Due to the advancement of IoT devices in both domestic and industrial environments, the need to incorporate a mechanism to build accountability in the IoT ecosystem is paramount. In the last few years, various initiatives have been started in this direction addressing many socio-technical concerns and challenges to build an accountable system. The solution that has received a lot of attention in both industry and academia is the Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) specification. It gives the possibility to the IoT device manufacturers to describe communications needed by each device to work properly. MUD implementation is challenging not only due to the diversity of IoT devices and manufacturer/operator/regulators but also due to the incremental integration of MUD-based flow control in the already existing Internet infrastructure. To provide a better understanding of these challenges, in this work, we explore and investigate the prototypes of three implementations proposed by different research teams and organisations, useful for the community to understand which are the various features implemented by the existing technologies. By considering that there exist some behaviours which can be only defined by local policy, we propose a MUD capable network integrating our User Policy Server(UPS). The UPS provides network administrators and endusers an opportunity to interact with MUD components through a user-friendly interface. Effects of Sr substitution at A-site in ordered perovskite Ba3-xSrxMnNb2O9 (x = 1 and 3) have been investigated using X-ray diffraction, magnetization, dielectric/magnetodielectric and neutron diffraction measurements. The parent compound Ba3MnNb2O9 having a large spin (S=5/2) is known to exhibit type-II multiferroic properties with quasi 2D triangular lattice antiferromagnetic ground state. A slight perturbation in exchange interaction due to substitution of smaller size isovalent ion at the A-site in Ba3-xSrxMnNb2O9 (x = 1 and 3) has been found to alter the ground states drastically and hence the multiferroicity. The crucial role of various fluctuations (quantum and/or thermal), weak lattice distortion induced by Sr-substitution and slight imbalance between different fluctuations in determining the ground states and the multiferroicity is discussed and compared with the results of smaller spin compounds (S = 1/2 or 1)., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

Recent advancements in ultra-low-power machine learning (TinyML) hardware promises to unlock an entirely new class of smart applications. However, continued progress is limited by the lack of a widely accepted benchmark for these systems. Benchmarking allows us to measure and thereby systematically compare, evaluate, and improve the performance of systems and is therefore fundamental to a field reaching maturity. In this position paper, we present the current landscape of TinyML and discuss the challenges and direction towards developing a fair and useful hardware benchmark for TinyML workloads. Furthermore, we present our four benchmarks and discuss our selection methodology. Incommensurate (IC) charge-order (CO) and spin density wave (SDW) order in electron doped SrMn1-xWxO3-{\delta} (x= 0.08 to 0.1875) have been studied using neutron diffraction.The study highlights the drastic effect of electron doping on the emergence of magnetic ground states which were not revealed in manganites before. With increasing (x) the crystal structure changes from simple tetragonal (P4/mmm) to an IC-CO modulated structure with super space-group P2/m({\alpha}\b{eta}0)00 having ab-planer ferro order of 3dx2-y2 orbitals in a compressed tetragonal (c 0.1, a different C-type AFM order with propagation vector k = (1/2,0,1/2), coexists with an incommensurate SDW order with k = (0.12, 0.38, 1/2).For compositions with 0.1625 < x < 0.175, while the structural features of CDW and orbital-order remain qualitatively the same, the magnetic interaction gets modified and results another SDW phase with single incommensurate propagation vector k = (0.07, 0.43, 1/2). A detail magnetic and structural phase-diagram, as a function of W substitution for SrMn1-xWxO3 (0.08 < x < 0.4) is presented.

We continue to see increasingly widespread deployment of IoT devices, with apparent intent to embed them in our built environment likely to accelerate if smart city and related programmes succeed. In this paper we are concerned with the ways in which current generation IoT devices are being designed in terms of their ill-considered dependencies on network connectivity and services. Our hope is to provide evidence that such dependencies need to be better thought through in design, and better documented in implementation so that those responsible for deploying these devices can be properly informed as to the impact of device deployment (at scale) on infrastructure resilience. We believe this will be particularly relevant as we feel that commodity IoT devices are likely to be commonly used to retrofit `smart' capabilities to existing buildings, particularly domestic buildings. To the existing body of work on network-level behaviour of IoT devices, we add \one~a protocol-level breakdown and analysis of periodicity, \two~an exploration of the service and infrastructure dependencies that will implicitly be taken in `smart' environments when IoT devices are deployed, and \three~examination of the robustness of device operation when connectivity is disrupted. We find that many devices make use of services distributed across the planet and thus appear dependent on the global network infrastructure even when carrying out purely local actions. Some devices cease to operate properly without network connectivity (even where their behaviour appears, on the face of it, to require only local information, e.g.,~the Hive thermostat). SrTi0.5Mn0.5O3 (STMO) is a chemically disordered perovskite having random distribution of Ti and Mn over 1b site. Striking discrepancies about the structural and magnetic properties of STMO demands detailed analysis which is addressed. To explore the magnetic ground state of STMO, static and dynamic magnetic properties were studied over a broad temperature range (2-300 K). The dc, ac magnetization show a cusp like peak at Tf ~ 14 K, which exhibits field and frequency dependence. The thermoremanent magnetization is characterized by using stretched exponential function and characteristic time suggests the existence of spin clusters. Also the other features observed in magnetic memory effect, muon spin resonance/rotation and neutron powder diffraction confirm the existence of cluster spin glass state in STMO, rather than the long range ordered ground state. Intriguingly, the observed spin relaxation can be attributed to the dilute magnetism due to non-magnetic doping at Mn-site and competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions resulting from the site disorder., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

In this paper, we introduce Zest (REST over ZeroMQ), a middleware technology in support of an Internet of Things (IoT). Our work is influenced by the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) but emphasises systems that can support fine-grained access control to both resources and audit information, and can provide features such as asynchronous communication patterns between nodes. We achieve this by using a hybrid approach that combines a RESTful architecture with a variant of a publisher/subscriber topology that has enhanced routing support. The primary motivation for Zest is to provide inter-component communications in the Databox, but it is applicable in other contexts where tight control needs to be maintained over permitted communication patterns.

Tunability of the partially ordered double perovskite (PODP) and coexisting spin-glass phase in SrMn1-xWxO3 (x=0.20 to 0.40) have been studied using neutron powder diffraction (NPD), muon spin relaxation (MuSR), and magnetic susceptibility (X) measurements. Structural studies reveal that SrMn1-xWxO3 undergoes a quasi-continuous transformation from simple perovskite (Pm-3m) to PODP (P21/n) phase as x increases. Xdc(T) and Xac(T) measurements show a sharp cusp-like peak at a spin glass transition, Tg. The muon relaxation rate ({\lambda}) peaks at Tg following a critical growth, given by {\lambda}={\lambda}(0).t-w [t=(T-Tg)/Tg]. However, no long-range magnetic order is observed in NPD below Tg. These measurements confirm a tunable spin-glass freezing in SrMn1-xWxO3 with Tg monotonously decreasing with W content, which we attribute to tuning the relative concentration of the coexisting Mn-O-Mn and Mn-O-W-O-Mn anti-ferromagnetic super-exchange pathways altering the geometric frustration.

Volunteer computing (VC) or distributed computing projects are common in the citizen cyberscience (CCS) community and present extensive opportunities for scientists to make use of computing power donated by volunteers to undertake large-scale scientific computing tasks. Volunteer computing is generally a non-interactive process for those contributing computing resources to a project whereas volunteer thinking (VT) or distributed thinking, which allows volunteers to participate interactively in citizen cyberscience projects to solve human computation tasks. In this paper we describe the integration of three tools, the Virtual Atom Smasher (VAS) game developed by CERN, LiveQ, a job distribution middleware, and CitizenGrid, an online platform for hosting and providing computation to CCS projects. This integration demonstrates the combining of volunteer computing and volunteer thinking to help address the scientific and educational goals of games like VAS. In the last few years, contributions of the general public in scientific projects has increased due to the advancement of communication and computing technologies. Internet played an important role in connecting scientists and volunteers who are interested in participating in their scientific projects. However, despite potential benefits, only a limited number of crowdsourcing based large-scale science (citizen science) projects have been deployed due to the complexity involved in setting them up and running them. In this paper, we present CitizenGrid - an online middleware platform which addresses security and deployment complexity issues by making use of cloud computing and virtualisation technologies. CitizenGrid incentivises scientists to make their small-to-medium scale applications available as citizen science projects by: 1) providing a directory of projects through a web-based portal that makes applications easy to discover; 2) providing flexibility to participate in, monitor, and control multiple citizen science projects from a common interface; 3) supporting diverse categories of citizen science projects. In recent years, the networks of low-power devices have gained popularity. Typically these devices are wireless and interact to form large networks such as the Machine to Machine (M2M) networks, Internet of Things (IoT), Wearable Computing, and Wireless Sensor Networks. The collaboration among these devices is a key to achieving the full potential of these networks. A major problem in this field is to guarantee robust communication between elements while keeping the whole network energy efficient. In this paper, we introduce an extended and improved emergent broadcast slot (EBS) scheme, which facilitates collaboration for robust communication and is energy efficient. In the EBS, nodes communication unit remains in sleeping mode and are awake just to communicate. The EBS scheme is fully decentralized, that is, nodes coordinate their wake-up window in partially overlapped manner within each duty-cycle to avoid message collisions. In recent years, citizen science has grown in popularity due to a number of reasons, including the emphasis on informal learning and creativity potential associated with these initiatives. Citizen science projects address research questions from various domains, ranging from Ecology to Astronomy. Due to the advancement of communication technologies, which makes outreach and engagement of wider communities easier, scientists are keen to turn their own research into citizen science projects. However, the development, deployment and management of these projects remains challenging. One of the most important challenges is building the project itself. There is no single tool or framework, which guides the step-by-step development of the project, since every project has specific characteristics, such as geographical constraints or volunteers' mode of participation. Therefore, in this article, we present a series of conceptual frameworks for categorisation, decision and deployment, which guide a citizen science project creator in every step of creating a new project starting from the research question to project deployment. The frameworks are designed with consideration to the properties of already existing citizen science projects and could be easily extended to include other dimensions, which are not currently perceived.

Online Citizen Science platforms are good examples of socio-technical systems where technology-enabled interactions occur between scientists and the general public (volunteers). Citizen Science platforms usually host multiple Citizen Science projects, and allow volunteers to choose the ones to participate in. Recent work in the area has demonstrated a positive feedback loop between participation and learning and creativity in Citizen Science projects, which is one of the motivating factors both for scientists and the volunteers. This emphasises the importance of creating successful Citizen Science platforms, which support this feedback process, and enable enhanced learning and creativity to occur through knowledge sharing and diverse participation. In this paper, we discuss how scientists' and volunteers' motivation and participation influence the design of Citizen Science platforms. We present our summary as guidelines for designing these platforms as user-inspired socio-technical systems. We also present the case-studies on popular Citizen Science platforms, including our own CitizenGrid platform, developed as part of the CCL EU project, as well as Zooniverse, World Community Grid, CrowdCrafting and EpiCollect+ to see how closely these platforms follow our proposed guidelines and how these may be further improved to incorporate the creativity enabled by the collective knowledge sharing., Comment: In Review process

In this manuscript, we investigated the accuracy of the entire chain of phase space files generated by the TrueBeam VirtuaLinac system in clinical treatment plans. Good agreement was obtained between the MC simulation and the clinical golden data for both flattened and FFF beams. The relative magnitude of agreement between MC and golden beam data presented in this research may assist a physicist in terms of the percent dose deviation that one may expect when using MC data for verification purposes.

Purpose: To quantitatively compare the dosimetric and biologic differences in treatment plans from flattened and flattening-filter-free (FFF) beam for three anatomic cancer sites. Methods and Materials: Treatment plans with static intensity-modulated radiotherapy beams and volumetric modulated arc therapy beams were generated for 13 patients for both the flattened beam and the FFF beam of the TrueBeam system. Beam energies of 6 MV and 10 MV were chosen for planning. A total of 104 treatment plans were generated in 13 patients. In order to analyze the biological effectiveness of treatment plans, dose volume histograms (DVH) were utilized. Flattened and FFF beam plans are quantitatively compared. Results: In head and neck cases, for VMAT plans, dose reduction in the FFF beam plans compared to the flattened beam in left cochlea, right submandibular gland and right parotid gland reached up to 2.36 Gy, 1.21 Gy and 1.45 Gy, respectively. Similarly, for static IMRT plans, the dose reduction of the FFF beam plans compared to the flattened beam plans for the same organs reached up to 0.34 Gy, 1.36 Gy and 1.46 Gy, respectively. Overall, for head and neck, the FFF beam plans achieved mean dose reduction of up to 5%, 7% and 9%, respectively for above organs at risk. For lung and prostate cases, the FFF beams provided lower or comparable NTCP values to organ-at-risk (OAR) compared to the flattened beam for all plans. Conclusions: In general, we observed treatment plans utilizing FFF beams can improve dose sparing to OARs without compromising the target coverage. Significant dose sparing effect is obtained for head and neck cancer cases, especially for the cases with relatively large field sizes (about 16x20 cm^2). For lung and prostate cases, compared to the flattened beam, the FFF beam based treatment plans provide lower or comparable dose to most OARs.

Automated face recognition and identification softwares are becoming part of our daily life; it finds its abode not only with Facebook's auto photo tagging, Apple's iPhoto, Google's Picasa, Microsoft's Kinect, but also in Homeland Security Department's dedicated biometric face detection systems. Most of these automatic face identification systems fail where the effects of aging come into the picture. Little work exists in the literature on the subject of face prediction that accounts for aging, which is a vital part of the computer face recognition systems. In recent years, individual face components' (e.g. eyes, nose, mouth) features based matching algorithms have emerged, but these approaches are still not efficient. Therefore, in this work we describe a Face Prediction Model (FPM), which predicts human face aging or growth related image variation using Principle Component Analysis (PCA) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) learning techniques.
