We analyze the general relation between canonical and grand canonical ensembles in the thermodynamic limit. We begin our discussion by deriving, with an alternative approach, some standard results first obtained by Kac and coworkers in the late 1970s. Then, motivated by the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of trapped gases with a fixed number of atoms, which is well described by the canonical ensemble and by the recent groundbreaking experimental realization of BEC with photons in a dye-filled optical micro-cavity under genuine grand canonical conditions, we apply our formalism to a system of non-interacting Bose particles confined in a two-dimensional harmonic trap. We discuss in detail the mathematical origin of the inequivalence of ensembles observed in the condensed phase, giving place to the so-called grand canonical catastrophe of density fluctuations. We also provide explicit analytical expressions for the internal energy and specific heat and compare them with available experimental data. The standard phase-ordering process is obtained by quenching a system, like the Ising model, to below the critical point. This is usually done with periodic boundary conditions to insure ergodicity breaking in the low temperature phase. With this arrangement the infinite system is known to remain permanently out of equilibrium, i.e. there exists a well defined asymptotic state which is time-invariant but different from the ordered ferromagnetic state. In this paper we establish the critical nature of this invariant state, by demonstrating numerically that the quench dynamics with periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions are indistinguishable one from the other. However while the asymptotic state does not coincide with the equilibrium state for the periodic case, it coincides instead with the equilibrium state of the antiperiodic case, which in fact is critical. The specific example of the Ising model is shown to be one instance of a more general phenomenon, since an analogous picture emerges in the spherical model, where boundary conditions are kept fixed to periodic, while the breaking or preserving of ergodicity is managed by imposing the spherical constraint either sharply or smoothly., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

In this paper we take a fresh look at the long standing issue of the nature of macroscopic density fluctuations in the grand canonical treatment of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). Exploiting the close analogy between the spherical and mean-spherical models of magnetism with the canonical and grand canonical treatment of the ideal Bose gas, we show that BEC stands for different phenomena in the two ensembles: an ordering transition of the type familiar from ferromagnetism in the canonical ensemble and condensation of fluctuations, i.e. growth of macroscopic fluctuations in a single degree of freedom, without ordering, in the grand canonical case. We further clarify that this is a manifestation of nonequivalence of the ensembles, due to the existence of long range correlations in the grand canonical one. The ferromagnetic transition in the Ising model is the paradigmatic example of ergodicity breaking accompanied by symmetry breaking. It is routinely assumed that the thermodynamic limit is taken with free or periodic boundary conditions. More exotic symmetry-preserving boundary conditions, like cylindrical antiperiodic, are less frequently used for special tasks, such as the study of phase coexistence or the roughening of an interface. Here we show, instead, that when the thermodynamic limit is taken with these boundary conditions, a novel type of transition takes place below $T_c$ (the usual Ising transition temperature) without breaking neither ergodicity nor symmetry. Then, the low temperature phase is characterized by a regime (condensation) of strong magnetization's fluctuations which replaces the usual ferromagnetic ordering. We study analytically the probability distribution of the heat released by an ensemble of harmonic oscillators to the thermal bath, in the nonequilibrium relaxation process following a temperature quench. We focus on the asymmetry properties of the heat distribution in the nonstationary dynamics, in order to study the forms taken by the Fluctuation Theorem as the number of degrees of freedom is varied. After analysing in great detail the cases of one and two oscillators, we consider the limit of a large number of oscillators, where the behavior of fluctuations is enriched by a condensation transition with a nontrivial phase diagram, characterized by reentrant behavior. Numerical simulations confirm our analytical findings. We also discuss and highlight how concepts borrowed from the study of fluctuations in equilibrium under symmetry breaking conditions [Gaspard, J. Stat. Mech. We argue that a strict relation exists between two in principle unrelated quantities: The size of the growing domains in a coarsening system, and the kinetic roughening of an interface. We study numerically the roughening properties of an interface in a two-dimensional Ising model with either random bonds or random fields, which are representative of universality classes where disorder acts only on the interface or also away from it, in the bulk. The dynamical structure factor shows a rich crossover pattern from the form of a pure system at large wavevectors $k$, to a different behavior, typical of the kind of disorder, at smaller $k$'s. For the random field model a second crossover is observed from the typical behavior of a system where disorder is only effective on the surface, as the random bond model, to the truly large scale behavior, where bulk-disorder is important, that is observed at the smallest wavevectors., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

We study numerically the phase-ordering kinetics of the site-diluted and bond-diluted Ising models after a quench from an infinite to a low temperature. We show that the speed of growth of the ordered domain's size is non-monotonous with respect to the amount of dilution $D$: Starting from the pure case $D=0$ the system slows down when dilution is added, as it is usually expected when disorder is introduced, but only up to a certain value $D^*$ beyond which the speed of growth raises again. The so-called grand canonical catastrophe of the density fluctuations in the ideal Bose gas is shown to be a particular instance of the much more general phenomenon of condensation of fluctuations, taking place in a large system, in or out of equilibrium, when a single degree of freedom makes a macroscopic contribution to the fluctuations of an extensive quantity. We study numerically the coarsening dynamics of the Ising model on a regular lattice with random bonds and on deterministic fractal substrates. We propose a unifying interpretation of the phase-ordering processes based on two classes of dynamical behaviors characterized by different growth-laws of the ordered domains size - logarithmic or power-law respectively. The Chapter is devoted to reviewing the main features of aging in non disordered systems relaxing via domain growth, after an istantaneous temperature quench. Using the autocorrelation and autoresponse functions to gauge the deviation from equilibrium, an hierarchy of processes is obtained by changing the temperature of the quench and the space dimensionality. The special role of the lower critical dimensionality is highlighted. Basic properties like the separation of the time scales and the splitting of degrees of freedom into fast and slow variables are treated in detail, both in general terms and through analytical calculations in solvable models. Fluctuations of energy and heat are investigated during the relaxation following the instantaneous temperature quench of an extended system. Results are obtained analytically for the Gaussian model and for the large $N$ model quenched below the critical temperature $T_C$. The main finding is that fluctuations exceeding a critical threshold do condense. Though driven by a mechanism similar to that of Bose-Einstein condensation, this phenomenon is an out-of-equilibrium feature produced by the breaking of energy equipartition occurring in the transient regime. Condensation of fluctuations is an interesting phenomenon conceptually distinct from condensation on average. One stricking feature is that, contrary to what happens on average, condensation of fluctuations may occurr even in the absence of interaction. The explanation emerges from the duality between large deviation events in the given system and typical events in a new and appropriately biased system. This surprising phenomenon is investigated in the context of the Gaussian model, chosen as paradigmatical non interacting system, before and after an istantaneous temperature quench. It is shown that the bias induces a mean-field-like effective interaction responsible of the condensation on average. We study numerically the phase-ordering kinetics of the two-dimensional site-diluted Ising model. The data can be interpreted in a framework motivated by renormalization-group concepts. Apart from the usual fixed point of the non-diluted system, there exist two disorder fixed points, characterized by logarithmic and power-law growth of the ordered domains. We use state-of-the-art molecular dynamics simulations to study hydrodynamic effects on aging during kinetics of phase separation in a fluid mixture. The domain growth law shows a crossover from a diffusive regime to a viscous hydrodynamic regime. There is a corresponding crossover in the autocorrelation function from a power-law behavior to an exponential decay. While the former is consistent with theories for diffusive domain growth, the latter results as a consequence of faster advective transport in fluids for which an analytical justification has been provided., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The off-equilibrium probability distribution of the heat exchanged by a ferromagnet in a time interval after a quench below the critical point is calculated analytically in the large-N limit. The distribution is characterized by a singular threshold Qc < 0, below which a macroscopic fraction of heat is released by the k = 0 Fourier component of the order parameter. The mathematical structure producing this phenomenon is the same responsible of the order parameter condensation in the equilibrium low temperature phase. The heat exchanged by the individual Fourier modes follows a non trivial pattern, with the unstable modes at small wave vectors warming up the modes around a characteristic finite wave vector kM. We study the nonconserved phase ordering dynamics of the d = 2, 3 random field Ising model, quenched to below the critical temperature. Motivated by the puzzling results of previous work in two and three di- mensions, reporting a crossover from power-law to logarithmic growth, together with superuniversal behavior of the correlation function, we have undertaken a careful investigation of both the domain growth law and the autocorrelation function. Our main results are as follows: We confirm the crossover to asymptotic logarithmic behavior in the growth law, but, at variance with previous findings, the exponent in the preasymptotic power law is disorder-dependent, rather than being the one of the pure system. Furthermore, we find that the autocorre- lation function does not display superuniversal behavior. This restores consistency with previous results for the d = 1 system, and fits nicely into the unifying scaling scheme we have recently proposed in the study of the random bond Ising model., Comment: To be published in Physical Review E

We study two-spin entanglement and order parameter fluctuations as a function of the system size in the XY model in a transverse field and in the isotropic XXX model. Both models are characterized by the occurrence of ground state degeneracy also when systems of finite size are considered. This is always true for the XXX model, but only at the factorizing field for the XY model. We study the size dependence of symmetric states, which, in the presence of degeneracy, can be expanded as a linear combination of broken symmetry states. We show that, while the XY model looses its quantum superposition content exponentially with the size $N$, a decrease of the order of 1/N is observed when the XXX model is considered. The emergence of two qualitatively different regimes is directly related to the difference in the symmetry of the models.

We present comprehensive numerical results for domain growth in the two-dimensional {\it Random Bond Ising Model} (RBIM) with nonconserved Glauber kinetics. We characterize the evolution via the {\it domain growth law}, and two-time quantities like the {\it autocorrelation function} and {\it autoresponse function}. Our results clearly establish that the growth law shows a crossover from a pre-asymptotic regime with "power-law growth with a disorder-dependent exponent" to an asymptotic regime with "logarithmic growth". We compare this behavior with previous results on one-dimensional disordered systems and we propose a unifying picture in a renormalization group framework. We also study the corresponding crossover in the scaling functions for the two-time quantities. Super-universality is found not to hold. We study coarsening dynamics in the ferromagnetic random bond Ising model in d = 1; 2. We focus on the validity of super-universality and the scaling properties of the response functions. In the d = 1 case, we obtain a complete understanding of the evolution, from pre- asymptotic to asymptotic behavior. The corresponding response function shows a clear violation of super-universality. Further, our results for d = 1; 2 settle the controversy regarding the decay exponent which characterizes the response function.

We study the fluctuations of the autocorrelation and autoresponse functions and, in particular, their variances and co-variance. In a first general part of the Article, we show the equivalence of the variance of the response function with the second-order susceptibility of a composite operator, and we derive an equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation theorem beyond-linear order relating it to the other variances. In a second part of the paper we apply the formalism to the study to non-disordered ferromagnets, in equilibrium or in the coarsening kinetics following a critical or sub-critical quench. We show numerically that the variances and the non-linear susceptibility obey scaling with respect to the coherence length $\xi$ in equilibrium, and with respect to the growing length $L(t)$ after a quench, similarly to what is known for the autocorrelation and the autoresponse functions., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures. We discuss the relation between the fluctuation-dissipation relation derived by Chatelain and Ricci-Tersenghi [C.Chatelain, J.Phys. A {\bf 36}, 10739 (2003); F. Ricci-Tersenghi, Phys.Rev.E 68, 065104(R) (2003)] and that by Lippiello-Corberi-Zannetti [E. Lippiello, F. Corberi and M. Zannetti Phys. Rev. E {\bf 72}, 056103 (2005)]. In order to do that, we re-derive the fluctuation-dissipation relation for systems of discrete variables evolving in discrete time via a stochastic non-equilibrium Markov process. The calculation is carried out in a general formalism comprising the Chatelain, Ricci-Tersenghi result and that by Lippiello-Corberi-Zannetti as special cases. The applicability, generality, and experimental feasibility of the two approaches is thoroughly discussed. Extending the analytical calculation to the variance of the response function we show the vantage of field-free numerical methods with respect to the standard method where the perturbation is applied. We also show that the signal to noise ratio is better (by a factor $\sqrt 2$) in the algorithm of Lippiello-Corberi-Zannetti with respect to that of Chatelain-Ricci Tersenghi., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures. We present a theoretical study of a system with competing short-range ferromagnetic attraction and a long-range anti-ferromagnetic repulsion, in the presence of a uniform external magnetic field. The interplay between these interactions, at sufficiently low temperature, leads to the self-tuning of the magnetization to a value which triggers phase coexistence, even in the presence of the external field. The investigation of this phenomenon is performed using a Ginzburg-Landau functional in the limit of an infinite number of order parameter components (large $N$ model). The scalar version of the model is expected to describe the phase separation taking place on a cell surface when this is immersed in a uniform concentration of chemical stimulant. A phase diagram is obtained as function of the external field and the intensity of the long-range repulsion. A unified derivation of the off equilibrium fluctuation dissipation relations (FDR) is given for Ising and continous spins to arbitrary order, within the framework of Markovian stochastic dynamics. Knowledge of the FDR allows to develop zero field algorithms for the efficient numerical computation of the response functions. Two applications are presented. In the first one, the problem of probing for the existence of a growing cooperative length scale is considered in those cases, like in glassy systems, where the linear FDR is of no use. The effectiveness of an appropriate second order FDR is illustrated in the test case of the Edwards-Anderson spin glass in one and two dimensions. In the second one, the important problem of the definition of an off equilibrium effective temperature through the nonlinear FDR is considered. It is shown that, in the case of coarsening systems, the effective temperature derived from the second order FDR is consistent with the one obtained from the linear FDR., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures

We study the role of the quench temperature $T_f$ in the phase-ordering kinetics of the Ising model with single spin flip in $d=2,3$. Equilibrium interfaces are flat at $T_f=0$, whereas at $T_f>0$ they are curved and rough (above the roughening temperature in $d=3$). We show, by means of scaling arguments and numerical simulations, that this geometrical difference is important for the phase-ordering kinetics as well. In particular, while the growth exponent $z=2$ of the size of domains $L(t)\sim t^{1/z}$ is unaffected by $T_f$, other exponents related to the interface geometry take different values at $T_f=0$ or $T_f>0$. For $T_f>0$ a crossover phenomenon is observed from an early stage where interfaces are still flat and the system behaves as at $T_f=0$, to the asymptotic regime with curved interfaces characteristic of $T_f>0$. Furthermore, it is shown that the roughening length, although sub-dominant with respect to $L(t)$, produces appreciable correction to scaling up to very long times in $d=2$., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures. We derive the exact beyond-linear fluctuation dissipation relation, connecting the response of a generic observable to the appropriate correlation functions, for Markov systems. The relation, which takes a similar form for systems governed by a master equation or by a Langevin equation, can be derived to every order, in large generality with respect to the considered model, in equilibrium and out of equilibrium as well. On the basis of the fluctuation dissipation relation we propose a particular response function, namely the second order susceptibility of the two-particle correlation function, as an effective quantity to detect and quantify cooperative effects in glasses and disordered systems. Motivated by recent numerical findings [M. Henkel, T. Enss, and M. Pleimling, J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 39 (2006) L589] we re-examine via Monte Carlo simulations the linear response function of the two-dimensional Ising model with Glauber dynamics quenched to the critical point. At variance with the results of Henkel et al., we detect discrepancies between the actual scaling behavior of the response function and the prediction of Local Scale Invariance. Such differences are clearly visible in the impulse autoresponse function, whereas they are drastically reduced in integrated response functions. Accordingly, the scaling form predicted on the basis of Local Scale Invariance simply provides an accurate fitting form for some quantities but cannot be considered to be exact., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures

In this Article we review some recent progresses in the field of non-equilibrium linear response theory. We show how a generalization of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem can be derived for Markov processes, and discuss the Cugliandolo-Kurchan \cite{Cugliandolo93} fluctuation dissipation relation for aging systems and the theorem by Franz {\it et. al.} \cite{Franz98} relating static and dynamic properties. We than specialize the subject to phase-ordering systems examining the scaling properties of the linear response function and how these are determined by the behavior of topological defects. We discuss how the connection between statics and dynamics can be violated in these systems at the lower critical dimension or as due to stochastic instability., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

We study numerically the aging dynamics of the two-dimensional p-state clock model after a quench from an infinite temperature to the ferromagnetic phase or to the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase. The system exhibits the general scaling behavior characteristic of non-disordered coarsening systems. For quenches to the ferromagnetic phase, the value of the dynamical exponents, suggests that the model belongs to the Ising-type universality class. Specifically, for the integrated response function $\chi (t,s)\simeq s^{-a_\chi}f(t/s)$, we find $a_\chi $ consistent with the value $a_\chi =0.28$ found in the two-dimensional Ising model., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures (please contact the authors for figures)

In order to check on a recent suggestion that local scale invariance [M.Henkel et al. Phys.Rev.Lett. {\bf 87}, 265701 (2001)] might hold when the dynamics is of Gaussian nature, we have carried out the measurement of the response function in the kinetic Ising model with Glauber dynamics quenched to $T_C$ in $d=4$, where Gaussian behavior is expected to apply, and in the two other cases of the $d=2$ model quenched to $T_C$ and to below $T_C$, where instead deviations from Gaussian behavior are expected to appear. We find that in the $d=4$ case there is an excellent agreement between the numerical data, the local scale invariance prediction and the analytical Gaussian approximation. No logarithmic corrections are numerically detected. Conversely, in the $d=2$ cases, both in the quench to $T_C$ and to below $T_C$, sizable deviations of the local scale invariance behavior from the numerical data are observed. These results do support the idea that local scale invariance might miss to capture the non Gaussian features of the dynamics. The considerable precision needed for the comparison has been achieved through the use of a fast new algorithm for the measurement of the response function without applying the external field. From these high quality data we obtain $a=0.27 \pm 0.002$ for the scaling exponent of the response function in the $d=2$ Ising model quenched to below $T_C$, in agreement with previous results., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures. We have repeated the simulations of Henkel, Paessens and Pleimling (HPP) [Phys.Rev.E {\bf 69}, 056109 (2004)] for the field-cooled susceptibility $\chi_{FC}(t) - \chi_0 \sim t^{-A}$ in the quench of ferromagnetic systems to and below $T_C$. We show that, contrary to the statement made by HPP, the exponent $A$ coincides with the exponent $a$ of the linear response function $R(t,s) \sim s^{-(1+a)}f_R(t/s)$. We point out what are the assumptions in the argument of HPP that lead them to the conclusion $A

We overview the general scaling behavior of the effective temperature in the que nches of simple non disordered systems, like ferromagnets, to and below $T_C$. Emphasis is on the behavior as d imensionality is varied. Consequences on the shape of the asymptotic parametric representation are derived. In particu lar, this is always trivial in the critical quenches with $T_C>0$. We clarify that the quench to $T_C=0$ at the lower critical dimensionality $d_L$, cannot be regarded as a critical quench. The aging part $R_{ag}(t,s)$ of the impulsive response function of the two dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model, quenched below the critical point, is studied numerically employing a new algorithm without the imposition of the external field. We find that the simple scaling form $R_{ag}(t,s)=s^{-(1+a)}f(t/s)$, which is usually believed to hold in the aging regime, is not obeyed. We analyse the data assuming the existence of a correction to scaling. We find $a=0.273 \pm 0.006$, in agreement with previous numerical results obtained from the zero field cooled magnetization. We investigate in detail also the scaling function $f(t/s)$ and we compare the results with the predictions of analytical theories. We make an ansatz for the correction to scaling, deriving an analytical expression for $R_{ag}(t,s)$. This gives a satisfactory qualitative agreement with the numerical data for $R_{ag}(t,s)$ and for the integrated response functions. With the analytical model we explore the overall behavior, extrapolating beyond the time regime accessible with the simulations. We explain why the data for the zero field cooled susceptibility are not too sensitive to the existence of the correction to scaling in $R_{ag}(t,s)$, making this quantity the most convenient for the study of the asymptotic scaling properties., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures. We derive for Ising spins an off-equilibrium generalization of the fluctuation dissipation theorem, which is formally identical to the one previously obtained for soft spins with Langevin dynamics [L.F.Cugliandolo, J.Kurchan and G.Parisi, J.Phys.I France \textbf{4}, 1641 (1994)]. The result is quite general and holds both for dynamics with conserved and non conserved order parameter. On the basis of this fluctuation dissipation relation, we construct an efficient numerical algorithm for the computation of the linear response function without imposing the perturbing field, which is alternative to those of Chatelain [J.Phys. A \textbf{36}, 10739 (2003)] and Ricci-Tersenghi [Phys.Rev.E {\bf 68}, 065104(R) (2003)]. As applications of the new algorithm, we present very accurate data for the linear response function of the Ising chain, with conserved and non conserved order parameter dynamics, finding that in both cases the structure is the same with a very simple physical interpretation. We also compute the integrated response function of the two dimensional Ising model, confirming that it obeys scaling $\chi (t,t_w)\simeq t_w^{-a}f(t/t_w)$, with $a =0.26\pm 0.01$, as previously found with a different method., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

The integrated response function in phase-ordering systems with scalar, vector, conserved and non conserved order parameter is studied at various space dimensionalities. Assuming scaling of the aging contribution $\chi_{ag} (t,t_w)= t_w ^{-a_\chi} \hat \chi (t/t_w)$ we obtain, by numerical simulations and analytical arguments, the phenomenological formula describing the dimensionality dependence of $a_\chi$ in all cases considered. The primary result is that $a_\chi$ vanishes continuously as $d$ approaches the lower critical dimensionality $d_L$. Drawing from exact, approximate and numerical results an overview of the properties of the out of equilibrium response function in phase ordering kinetics is presented. Focusing on the zero field cooled magnetization, emphasis is on those features of this quantity which display non trivial behavior when relaxation proceeds by coarsening. Prominent among these is the dimensionality dependence of the scaling exponent $a_{\chi}$ which leads to failure of the connection between static and dynamic properties at the lower dimensionality $d_L$, where $a_{\chi}=0$. In this paper we investigate the relation between the scaling properties of the linear response function $R(t,s)$, of the thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) and of the zero field cooled magnetization (ZFC) in the context of phase ordering kinetics. We explain why the retrival of the scaling properties of $R(t,s)$ from those of TRM and ZFC is not trivial. Preasymptotic contributions generate a long crossover in TRM, while ZFC is affected by a dangerous irrelevant variable. Lack of understanding of both these points has generated some confusion in the literature. The full picture relating the exponents of all the quantities involved is explicitely illustrated in the framework of the large $N$ model. Following this scheme, an assessment of the present status of numerical simulations for the Ising model can be made. We reach the conclusion that on the basis of the data available up to now, statements on the scaling properties of $R(t,s)$ can be made from ZFC but not from TRM. From ZFC data for the Ising model with $d=2,3,4$ we confirm the previously found linear dependence on dimensionality of the exponent $a$ entering $R(t,s) \sim s^{-(1+a)}f(t/s)$. The problem of the equivalence of the spherical and mean spherical models, which has been thoroughly studied and understood in equilibrium, is considered anew from the dynamical point of view during the time evolution following a quench from above to below the critical temperature. It is found that there exists a crossover time $t^* \sim V^{2/d}$ such that for $t < t^*$ the two models are equivalent, while for $t > t^*$ macroscopic discrepancies arise. The relation between the off equilibrium response function and the structure of the equilibrium state, which usually holds for phase ordering systems, is found to hold for the spherical model but not for the mean spherical one. The dynamics of a binary system with non conserved order parameter under a plain shear flow with rate $\gamma $ is solved analytically in the large-N limit. A phase transition is observed at a critical temperature $T_c(\gamma)$. After a quench from a high temperature equilibrium state to a lower temperature $T$ a non-equilibrium stationary state is entered when $T>T_c(\gamma)$, while aging dynamics characterizes the phases with $T\leq T_c(\gamma)$. The relation between the autocorrelation $C(t,t_w)$ and the integrated linear response function $\chi(t,t_w)$ is studied in the context of the large-N model for phase-ordering systems subjected to a shear flow. In the high temperature phase $T>T_c$ a non-equilibrium stationary state is entered which is characterized by a non-trivial fluctuation-dissipation relation $\chi (t-t_w)=\tilde \chi(C(t-t_w))$. For quenches below $T_c$ the splitting of the order parameter field into two statistically independent components, responsible for the stationary $C^{st}(t-t_w)$ and aging $C^{ag}(t/t_w)$ part of the autocorrelation function, can be explicitly exhibited in close analogy with the undriven case. In the regime $t-t_w\ll t_w$ the same relation $\chi (t-t_w)=\tilde \chi (C^{st}(t-t_w))$ is found between the response and $C^{st}(t-t_w)$, as for $T>T_c$ . The aging part of $\chi (t,t_w)$ is negligible for $t_w\to \infty$, as without drive, resulting in a flat $\chi (C)$ in the aging regime $t-t_w\gg t_w$., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

The off-equilibrium response function $\chi (t,t_w)$ and autocorrelation function $C(t,t_w)$ of an Ising chain with spin-exchange dynamics are studied numerically and compared with the same quantities in the case of spin-flip dynamics. It is found that, even though these quantities are separately different in the two cases, the parametric plot of $\chi (t,t_w)$ versus $C(t,t_w)$ is the same. While this result could be expected in higher dimensionality, where $\chi (C)$ is related to the equilibrium state, it is far from trivial in the one dimensional case where this relation does not hold. The origin of the universality of $\chi(C)$ is traced back to the optimization of domains position with respect to the perturbing external field. A thorough numerical investigation of the slow dynamics in the d=1 random field Ising model in the limit of an infinite ferromagnetic coupling is presented. Crossovers from the preasymptotic pure regime to the asymptotic Sinai regime are investigated for the average domain size, the autocorrelation function and staggered magnetization. By switching on an additional small random field at the time tw the linear off equilibrium response function is obtained, which displays as well the crossover from the nontrivial behavior of the d=1 pure Ising model to the asymptotic behavior where it vanishes identically., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

The basic features of the slow relaxation phenomenology arising in phase ordering processes are obtained analytically in the large $N$ model through the exact separation of the order parameter into the sum of thermal and condensation components. The aging contribution in the response function $\chi_{ag}(t,t_w)$ is found to obey a pattern of behavior, under variation of dimensionality, qualitatively similar to the one observed in Ising systems. There exists a critical dimensionality $(d=4)$ above which $\chi_{ag}(t,t_w)$ is proportional to the defect density $\rho_D(t)$, while for $d<4$ it vanishes more slowly than $\rho_D(t)$ and at $d=2$ does not vanish. The connection between the out of equilibrium linear response function and static properties established by Franz, Mezard, Parisi and Peliti for slowly relaxing systems is analyzed in the context of phase ordering processes. Separating the response in the bulk of domains from interface response, we find that in order for the connection to hold the interface contribution must be asymptotically negligible. How fast this happens depends on the competition between interface curvature and the perturbing external field in driving domain growth. This competition depends on space dimensionality and there exists a critical value $d_c=3$ below which the interface response becomes increasingly important eventually invalidating the connection between statics and dynamics as the limit $d=1$ is reached. The relationship between statics and dynamics proposed by Franz, Mezard, Parisi and Peliti (FMPP) for slowly relaxing systems [Phys.Rev.Lett. {\bf 81}, 1758 (1998)] is investigated in the framework of non disordered coarsening systems. Separating the bulk from interface response we find that for statics to be retrievable from dynamics the interface contribution must be asymptotically negligible. How fast this happens depends on dimensionality. There exists a critical dimensionality above which the interface response vanishes like the interface density and below which it vanishes more slowly. At $d=1$ the interface response does not vanish leading to the violation of the FMPP scheme. The exact relation between the response function $R(t,t^{\prime})$ and the two time correlation function $C(t,t^{\prime})$ is derived analytically in the one dimensional kinetic Ising model subjected to a temperature quench. Separated flows past complex geometries are modelled by discrete vortex techniques. The flows are assumed to be rotational and inviscid, and a new technique is described to determine the streamfunctions for linear shear profiles. The geometries considered are the snow cornice and the backward-facing step, whose edges allow for the separation of the flow and reattachment downstream of the recirculation regions. A point vortex has been added to the flows in order to constrain the separation points to be located at the edges, while the conformal mappings have been modified in order to smooth the sharp edges and let the separation points be free to oscillate around the points of maximum curvature. Unsteadiness is imposed on the flow by perturbing the vortex location, either by displacing the vortex from equilibrium, or by imposing a random perturbation with zero mean on the vortex in equilibrium. The trajectories of passive scalars continuously released upwind of the separation point and trapped by the recirculating bubble are numerically integrated, and concentration time series are calculated at fixed locations downwind of the reattachment points. This model proves to be capable of reproducing the trapping and intermittent release of scalars, in agreement with the simulation of the flow past a snow cornice performed by a discrete multi-vortex model, as well as with direct numerical simulations of the flow past a backward-facing step. The simulation results indicate that for flows undergoing separation and reattachment the unsteadiness of the recirculating bubble is the main mechanism responsible for the intense large-scale concentration fluctuations downstream., Comment: 23 pages latex, 9 figures .gif

The phenomenology from the time of the quench to the asymptotic behavior in the phase-ordering kinetics of a system with conserved order parameter is investigated in the Bray-Humayun model and in the Cahn-Hilliard-Cook model. From the comparison of the structure factor in the two models the generic pattern of the overall time evolution, based on the sequence ``early linear - intermediate mean field - late asymptotic regime'' is extracted. It is found that the time duration of each of these regimes is strongly dependent on the wave vector and on the parameters of the quench, such as the amplitude of the initial fluctuations and the final equilibrium temperature.
