Search

A major hurdle for building a large-scale quantum computer is to scale up the number of qubits while maintaining connectivity between them. In trapped-ion devices, this connectivity can be provided by physically moving subregisters consisting of a few ions across the processor. The topology of the connectivity is given by the layout of the ion trap where one-dimensional and two-dimensional arrangements are possible. Here, we focus on an architecture based on a rectangular two-dimensional lattice, where each lattice site contains a subregister with a linear string of ions. We refer to this architecture as the Quantum Spring Array (QSA). Subregisters placed in neighboring lattice sites can be coupled by bringing the respective ion strings close to each other while avoiding merging them into a single trapping potential. Control of the separation of subregisters along one axis of the lattice, known as the axial direction, uses quasi-static voltages, while the second axis, the radial, requires control of radio frequency signals. In this work, we investigate key elements of the 2D lattice quantum computation architecture along both axes: We show that the coupling rate between neighboring lattice sites increases with the number of ions per site and the motion of the coupled system can be resilient to noise. The coherence of the coupling is assessed, and an entangled state of qubits in separate trapping regions along the radial axis is demonstrated. Moreover, we demonstrate control over radio frequency signals to adjust radial separation between strings, and thus tune their coupling rate. We further map the 2D lattice architecture to code primitives for fault-tolerant quantum error correction, providing a step towards a quantum processor architecture that is optimized for large-scale fault-tolerant operation., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures (15 in main text, 4 in appendices)

This paper presents a risk mitigating, time-varying feedback control algorithm for crop production when state dynamics are subject to uncertainty. The model based case study concerns a 40 day production round of lettuce in a greenhouse where control input consists of daily and nightly temperature set points. The control problem was formulated in terms of a stochastic Markov decision process with the objective to maximize the expected net revenue at harvest time. The importance of time-varying feedback and of risk mitigation was investigated by making a comparison with a controller that takes uncertainty into account but is static and a controller which is dynamic but ignores the uncertainty in the state dynamics. For the case of heat limited crop growth, and strict requirements on harvest weight precision, the dynamic stochastic controller outperformed the static controller in terms of both maximal expected net revenue (by 19 %) and state precision at harvest time (with 50 % less standard deviation). It also outperformed the deterministic controller for both criteria (15 % in maximal expected net revenue and 8 % less standard deviation). A detailed sensitivity analysis showed that such improvements in performance levels are robust, since they hold over large ranges of uncertainty in state dynamics, required harvest precision levels, starting days, and initial weights. The results provide insights in potential of dynamic feedback and risk mitigation strategies for high precision requirements under uncertainty. Although the results should be interpreted with caution, they illustrate the considerable potential benefit for stochastic greenhouse climate control under uncertainty when high precision is required.

We demonstrate a novel experimental toolset that enables irreversible multi-qubit operations on a quantum platform. To exemplify our approach, we realize two elementary nonunitary operations: the OR and NOR gates. The electronic states of two trapped $^{40}$Ca$^{+}$ ions encode the logical information, and a co-trapped $^{88}$Sr$^{+}$ ion provides the irreversibility of the gate by a dissipation channel through sideband cooling. We measure $87\%$ and $81\%$ success rates for the OR and NOR gates, respectively. This paper presents a new approach to the FNC-1 fake news classification task which involves employing pre-trained encoder models from similar NLP tasks, namely sentence similarity and natural language inference, and two neural network architectures using this approach are proposed. Methods in data augmentation are explored as a means of tackling class imbalance in the dataset, employing common pre-existing methods and proposing a method for sample generation in the under-represented class using a novel sentence negation algorithm. Comparable overall performance with existing baselines is achieved, while significantly increasing accuracy on an under-represented but nonetheless important class for FNC-1.

Quantum information carriers, just like most physical systems, naturally occupy high-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Instead of restricting them to a two-level subspace, these high-dimensional (qudit) quantum systems are emerging as a powerful resource for the next generation of quantum processors. Yet harnessing the potential of these systems requires efficient ways of generating the desired interaction between them. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an implementation of a native two-qudit entangling gate in a trapped-ion qudit system up to dimension $5$. This is achieved by generalizing a recently proposed light-shift gate mechanism to generate genuine qudit entanglement in a single application of the gate. We use the newly introduced spanning stress tensor trajectory $U_{\sigma}$-space construction within next generation quantum theory of atoms in molecules (NG-QTAIM) for a chirality investigation of singly and doubly substituted ethane with halogen substituents: F, Cl, Br. A lack of achiral character in $U_{\sigma}$-space was discovered for singly substituted ethane. The resultant axial bond critical point (BCP) sliding responded more strongly to the increase in atomic number of the substituted halogen than the chirality. We introduce a development of next generation quantum theory of atoms in molecules (NG-QTAIM) for an investigation of the chirality of ethane and discover a $Q_{\sigma}$ isomer in addition to $S_{\sigma}$ and $R_{\sigma}$ stereoisomers in the stress tensor trajectory $U_{\sigma}$-space. The $Q_{\sigma}$ isomer is defined to be a 'null-isomer' since the value of the chirality-helicity function $\approx 0$. The presence of chiral contributions suggests that steric effects, rather than hyper-conjugation, explain the staggered geometry of ethane. The steric effects, within the NG-QTAIM interpretation, are reduced by a factor of two using an applied electric-field directed down a C-H bond.

The performance of quantum gate operations is experimentally determined by how correct operational parameters can be determined and set, and how stable these parameters can be maintained. In addition, gates acting on different sets of qubits require unique sets of control parameters. Thus, an efficient multi-dimensional parameter estimation procedure is crucial to calibrate even medium sized quantum processors. Here, we develop and characterize an efficient calibration protocol to automatically estimate and adjust experimental parameters of the widely used Molmer-Sorensen entangling gate operation in a trapped ion quantum information processor. The protocol exploits Bayesian parameter estimation methods which includes a stopping criterion based on a desired gate infidelity. We experimentally demonstrate a median gate infidelity of $1.3(1)\cdot10^{-3}$, requiring only $1200\pm500$ experimental cycles, while completing the entire gate calibration procedure in less than one minute. We investigate the energy dynamics of non-crystallized (melted) ions, confined in a Paul trap. The non-periodic Coulomb interaction experienced by melted ions forms a medium for non-conservative energy transfer from the radio-frequency (rf) field to the ions, a process known as rf heating. We study rf heating by analyzing numerical simulations of non-crystallized ion motion in Paul trap potentials, in which the energy of the ions' secular motion changes at discrete intervals, corresponding to ion-ion collisions. The analysis of these collisions is used as a basis to derive a simplified model of rf heating energy dynamics, from which we conclude that the rf heating rate is predominantly dependent on the rf field strength. We confirm the predictability of the model experimentally: Two trapped $^{40}$Ca$^{+}$ ions are deterministically driven to melt, and their fluorescence rate is used to infer the ions' energy. From simulation and experimental results, we generalize which experimental parameters are required for efficient recrystallization of melted trapped ions.

To enable automated software testing, the ability to automatically navigate to a state of interest and to explore all, or at least sufficient number of, instances of such a state is fundamental. When testing a computer game the problem has an extra dimension, namely the virtual world where the game is played on. This world often plays a dominant role in constraining which logical states are reachable, and how to reach them. So, any automated testing algorithm for computer games will inevitably need a layer that deals with navigation on a virtual world. Unlike e.g. navigating through the GUI of a typical web-based application, navigating over a virtual world is much more challenging. This paper discusses how concepts from geometry and graph-based path finding can be applied in the context of game testing to solve the problem of automated navigation and exploration. As a proof of concept, the paper also briefly discusses the implementation of the proposed approach.

We investigate the heterogeneity of outcomes of repeated instances of percolation experiments in complex networks using a message passing approach to evaluate heterogeneous, node dependent probabilities of belonging to the giant or percolating cluster, i.e. the set of mutually connected nodes whose size scales linearly with the size of the system. We evaluate these both for large finite single instances, and for synthetic networks in the configuration model class in the thermodynamic limit. For the latter, we consider both Erdos-Renyi and scale free networks as examples of networks with narrow and broad degree distributions respectively. For real-world networks we use an undirected version of a Gnutella peer-to-peer file-sharing network with $N=62,568$ nodes as an example. We derive the theory for multiple instances of both uncorrelated and correlated percolation processes. We describe, realize, and experimentally investigate a method to perform physical rotations of ion chains, trapped in a segmented surface Paul trap, as a building block for large scale quantum computational sequences. Control of trapping potentials is achieved by parametrizing electrode voltages in terms of spherical harmonic potentials. Voltage sequences that enable crystal rotations are numerically obtained by optimizing time-dependent ion positions and motional frequencies, taking into account the effect of electrical filters in our set-up. We minimize rotation-induced heating by expanding the sequences into Fourier components, and optimizing the resulting parameters with a machine-learning approach. Optimized sequences rotate $^{40}$Ca$^+$ - $^{40}$Ca$^+$ crystals with axial heating rates of $\Delta\bar{n}_{com}=0.6^{(+3)}_{(-2)}$ and $\Delta\bar{n}_{str}=3.9(5)$ phonons per rotation for the common and stretch modes, at mode frequencies of 1.24 and 2.15 MHz. Qubit coherence loss is 0.2(2)$\%$ per rotation. We also investigate rotations of mixed species crystals ($^{40}$Ca$^+$ - $^{88}$Sr$^+$) and achieve unity success rate.

The current work investigates candidate building blocks based on molecular junctions from hydrogen transfer tautomerization in the benzoquinone-like core of an azophenine molecule with QTAIM and the recently-introduced stress tensor trajectory analysis. We find that in particular the stress tensor trajectories are well suited to describe the mechanism of the switching process. The effects of an Fe-dopant atom coordinated to the quinone ring, as well as F and Cl substitution of different ring-hydrogens, are investigated and the new QTAIM and stress tensor analysis is used to draw conclusions on the effectiveness of such molecules as molecular switches in nano-sized electronic circuits. We find that the coordinated Fe-dopant greatly improves the switching properties, both in terms of the tautomerisation barrier that has to be crossed in the switching process and the expected conductance behavior, while the effects of hydrogen substitution are more subtle. The absence of the Fe-dopant atom led to impaired functioning of the switch 'OFF' mechanism as well as coinciding with the formation of closed-shell H---H bond critical points that indicated a strained or electron deficient environment. Azophenine has previously been identified as a controllable molecular switch when deposited on a Cu(110) surface, where it can be in two symmetry-equivalent states. Each of the two states can be set as well as read by means of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). We propose a family of molecules based on the same quinone core, which show similar switching behavior without a supporting metal surface. Such a molecule could be an element in a molecular circuit or computer. Using the example of a simple hypothetical molecule, we show that it is possible to create molecules that show the necessary properties: two conformations with similar energy but different electric conductivity, and the possibility to switch between those by applying an external electric field.

In the past two decades, functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging has been used to relate neuronal network activity to cognitive processing and behaviour. Recently this approach has been augmented by algorithms that allow us to infer causal links between component populations of neuronal networks. Multiple inference procedures have been proposed to approach this research question but so far, each method has limitations when it comes to establishing whole-brain connectivity patterns. In this work, we discuss eight ways to infer causality in fMRI research: Bayesian Nets, Dynamical Causal Modelling, Granger Causality, Likelihood Ratios, LiNGAM, Patel's Tau, Structural Equation Modelling, and Transfer Entropy. We finish with formulating some recommendations for the future directions in this area.

A femtosecond pump-probe setup is described that is optimised for broadband transient reflectivity experiments on solid samples over a wide range of temperatures. By combining a temporal resolution of 45 fs and a broad detection range between 1.75 and 2.85 eV, this apparatus can provide insightful information on the interplay between coherent collective modes and high-energy electronic excitations, which is one of the distinctive characteristics of strongly interacting and correlated quantum systems. The use of a single-shot readout CMOS array detector at frame rates up to 10 kHz allows to resolve coherent oscillations with amplitudes below 10$^{-4}$ in $\Delta$R/R. We demonstrate the operation of this setup on the prototypical charge-transfer insulator La$_2$CuO$_4$, revealing the presence of coherent optical phonons with frequencies as high as 13 THz., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

We report on the design of a cryogenic setup for trapped ion quantum computing containing a segmented surface electrode trap. The heat shield of our cryostat is designed to attenuate alternating magnetic field noise, resulting in 120~dB reduction of 50~Hz noise along the magnetic field axis. We combine this efficient magnetic shielding with high optical access required for single ion addressing as well as for efficient state detection by placing two lenses each with numerical aperture 0.23 inside the inner heat shield. The cryostat design incorporates vibration isolation to avoid decoherence of optical qubits due to the motion of the cryostat. We measure vibrations of the cryostat of less than $\pm$20~nm over 2~s. In addition to the cryogenic apparatus, we describe the setup required for an operation with $^{\mathrm{40}}$Ca$^{\mathrm{+}}$ and $^{\mathrm{88}}$Sr$^{\mathrm{+}}$ ions. The instability of the laser manipulating the optical qubits in $^{\mathrm{40}}$Ca$^{\mathrm{+}}$ is characterized yielding a minimum of its Allan deviation of 2.4$\cdot$10$^{\mathrm{-15}}$ at 0.33~s. To evaluate the performance of the apparatus, we trapped $^{\mathrm{40}}$Ca$^{\mathrm{+}}$ ions, obtaining a heating rate of 2.14(16)~phonons/s and a Gaussian decay of the Ramsey contrast with a 1/e-time of 18.2(8)~ms.

In cuprates, a precursor state of superconductivity is speculated to exist above the critical temperature $\mathrm{T_C}$. Here we show via a combination of far-infrared ellipsometry and ultrafast broadband optical spectroscopy that signatures of such a state can be obtained via three independent observables in an underdoped sample of NdBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+\delta}$. The pseudogap correlations were disentangled from the response of laser-broken pairs by clocking their characteristic time-scales. The onset of a superconducting precursor state was found at a temperature $\mathrm{T_{ONS}}$ $>$ $\mathrm{T_C}$, consistent with the temperature scale identified via static optical spectroscopy. Furthermore, the temperature evolution of the coherent vibration of the Ba ion, strongly renormalized by the onset of superconductivity, revealed a pronounced anomaly at the same temperature $\mathrm{T_{ONS}}$. The microscopic nature of such a precursor state is discussed in terms of pre-formed pairs and enhanced bilayer coherence.

Symmetry breaking across phase transitions often causes changes in selection rules and emergence of optical modes which can be detected via spectroscopic techniques or generated coherently in pump-probe experiments. In second-order or weakly first-order transitions, fluctuations of the order parameter are present above the ordering temperature, giving rise to intriguing precursor phenomena, such as critical opalescence. Here, we demonstrate that in magnetite (Fe$_3$O$_4$) light excitation couples to the critical fluctuations of the charge order and coherently generates structural modes of the ordered phase above the critical temperature of the Verwey transition. Our findings are obtained by detecting coherent oscillations of the optical constants through ultrafast broadband spectroscopy and analyzing their dependence on temperature. To unveil the coupling between the structural modes and the electronic excitations, at the origin of the Verwey transition, we combine our results from pump-probe experiments with spontaneous Raman scattering data and theoretical calculations of both the phonon dispersion curves and the optical constants. Our methodology represents an effective tool to study the real-time dynamics of critical fluctuations across phase transitions.

Tailoring the properties of correlated oxides is accomplished by chemical doping, pressure, temperature or magnetic field. Photoexcitation is a valid alternative to reach out-of-equilibrium states otherwise inaccessible. Here, we quantitatively estimate the coupling between a lattice distortion and the charge-transfer excitation in (La$_2$CuO$_{4+\delta}$). We photoinduce a coherent La ion vibration and monitor the response of the optical constants in a broad energy range, providing quantitative information on the electron-phonon matrix element that can be compared to theoretical models. We propose the same methodology to probe electron-electron interactions in other materials.

We present diffraction patterns from micron-sized areas of mono-crystalline graphite obtained with an ultracold and ultrafast electron source. We show that high spatial coherence is manifest in the visibility of the patterns even for picosecond bunches of appreciable charge, enabled by the extremely low source temperature (~ 10 K). For a larger, ~ 100 um spot size on the sample, spatial coherence lengths > 10 nm result, sufficient to resolve diffraction patterns of complex protein crystals. This makes the source ideal for ultrafast electron diffraction of complex macromolecular structures such as membrane proteins, in a regime unattainable by conventional photocathode sources. By further reducing the source size, sub-um spot sizes on the sample become possible with spatial coherence lengths exceeding 1 nm, enabling ultrafast nano-diffraction for material science., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We consider a variation of the prototype combinatorial-optimisation problem known as graph-colouring. Our optimisation goal is to colour the vertices of a graph with a fixed number of colours, in a way to maximise the number of different colours present in the set of nearest neighbours of each given vertex. This problem, which we pictorially call "palette-colouring", has been recently addressed as a basic example of problem arising in the context of distributed data storage. Even though it has not been proved to be NP complete, random search algorithms find the problem hard to solve. Heuristics based on a naive belief propagation algorithm are observed to work quite well in certain conditions. In this paper, we build upon the mentioned result, working out the correct belief propagation algorithm, which needs to take into account the many-body nature of the constraints present in this problem. This method improves the naive belief propagation approach, at the cost of increased computational effort. We also investigate the emergence of a satisfiable to unsatisfiable "phase transition" as a function of the vertex mean degree, for different ensembles of sparse random graphs in the large size ("thermodynamic") limit., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

We compute spectra of symmetric random matrices describing graphs with general modular structure and arbitrary inter- and intra-module degree distributions, subject only to the constraint of finite mean connectivities. We also evaluate spectra of a certain class of small-world matrices generated from random graphs by introducing short-cuts via additional random connectivity components. Both adjacency matrices and the associated graph Laplacians are investigated. For the Laplacians, we find Lifshitz type singular behaviour of the spectral density in a localised region of small $|\lambda|$ values. In the case of modular networks, we can identify contributions local densities of state from individual modules. For small-world networks, we find that the introduction of short cuts can lead to the creation of satellite bands outside the central band of extended states, exhibiting only localised states in the band-gaps. Results for the ensemble in the thermodynamic limit are in excellent agreement with those obtained via a cavity approach for large finite single instances, and with direct diagonalisation results., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

We introduce models of heterogeneous systems with finite connectivity defined on random graphs to capture finite-coordination effects on the low-temperature behavior of finite dimensional systems. Our models use a description in terms of small deviations of particle coordinates from a set of reference positions, particularly appropriate for the description of low-temperature phenomena. A Born-von-Karman type expansion with random coefficients is used to model effects of frozen heterogeneities. The key quantity appearing in the theoretical description is a full distribution of effective single-site potentials which needs to be determined self-consistently. If microscopic interactions are harmonic, the effective single-site potentials turn out to be harmonic as well, and the distribution of these single-site potentials is equivalent to a distribution of localization lengths used earlier in the description of chemical gels. For structural glasses characterized by frustration and anharmonicities in the microscopic interactions, the distribution of single-site potentials involves anharmonicities of all orders, and both single-well and double well potentials are observed, the latter with a broad spectrum of barrier heights. The appearance of glassy phases at low temperatures is marked by the appearance of asymmetries in the distribution of single-site potentials, as previously observed for fully connected systems. Double-well potentials with a broad spectrum of barrier heights and asymmetries would give rise to the well known universal glassy low temperature anomalies when quantum effects are taken into account., Comment: 35 pages, 8 Figures

We study a variation of the graph colouring problem on random graphs of finite average connectivity. Given the number of colours, we aim to maximise the number of different colours at neighbouring vertices (i.e. one edge distance) of any vertex. Two efficient algorithms, belief propagation and Walksat are adapted to carry out this task. We present experimental results based on two types of random graphs for different system sizes and identify the critical value of the connectivity for the algorithms to find a perfect solution. We obtain exact expressions for the asymptotic behaviour of the average probability of the block decoding error for ensembles of regular low density parity check error correcting codes, by employing diagrammatic techniques. Furthermore, we show how imposing simple constraints on the code ensemble (that can be practically implemented in linear time), allows one to suppress the error probability for codes with more than 2 checks per bit, to an arbitrarily low power of $N$. The problem of vertex coloring in random graphs is studied using methods of statistical physics and probability. Our analytical results are compared to those obtained by exact enumeration and Monte-Carlo simulations. We critically discuss the merits and shortcomings of the various methods, and interpret the results obtained. The performance of ``typical set (pairs) decoding'' for ensembles of Gallager's linear code is investigated using statistical physics. In this decoding, error happens when the information transmission is corrupted by an untypical noise or two or more typical sequences satisfy the parity check equation provided by the received codeword for which a typical noise is added. We show that the average error rate for the latter case over a given code ensemble can be tightly evaluated using the replica method, including the sensitivity to the message length. Our approach generally improves the existing analysis known in information theory community, which was reintroduced by MacKay (1999) and believed as most accurate to date., Comment: 7 pages

In this paper we analyse both the dynamics and the high density physics of the infinite dimensional lattice gas model for random heteropolymers recently introduced in \cite{jort}. Restricting ourselves to site-disordered heteropolymers, we derive exact closed deterministic evolution equations for a suitable set of dynamic order parameters (in the thermodynamic limit), and use these to study the dynamics of the system for different choices of the monomer polarity parameters. We also study the equilibrium properties of the system in the high density limit, which leads to a phase diagram exhibiting transitions between swollen states, compact states, and regions with partial compactification. We propose and solve a simple model describing secondary structure formation in random hetero-polymers. It describes monomers with a combination of one-dimensional short-range interactions (representing steric forces and hydrogen bonds) and infinite range interactions (representing polarity forces). We solve our model using a combination of mean field and random field techniques, leading to phase diagrams exhibiting second-order transitions between folded, partially folded and unfolded states, including regions where folding depends on initial conditions. Our theoretical results, which are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations, lead to an appealing physical picture of the folding process: the polarity forces drive the transition to a collapsed state, the steric forces introduce monomer specificity, and the hydrogen bonds stabilise the conformation by damping the frustration-induced multiplicity of states., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures

We propose a general scheme in which disordered systems are allowed to sacrifice energy equi-partitioning and separate into a hierarchy of ergodic sub-systems (clusters) with different characteristic time-scales and temperatures. The details of the break-up follow from the requirement of stationarity of the entropy of the slower cluster, at every level in the hierarchy. We apply our ideas to the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, and show how the Parisi solution can be {\it derived} quantitatively from plausible physical principles. We propose a general quantitative scheme in which systems are given the freedom to sacrifice energy equi-partitioning on the relevant time-scales of observation, and have phase transitions by separating autonomously into ergodic sub-systems (clusters) with different characteristic time-scales and temperatures. The details of the break-up follow uniquely from the requirement of zero entropy for the slower cluster. Complex systems, such as the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, are found to minimise their free energy by spontaneously decomposing into a hierarchy of ergodically equilibrating degrees of freedom at different (effective) temperatures. This leads exactly and uniquely to Parisi's replica symmetry breaking scheme. Our approach, which is somewhat akin to an earlier one by Sompolinsky, gives new insight into the physical interpretation of the Parisi scheme and its relations with other approaches, numerical experiments, and short range models. We introduce $\infty$-dimensional versions of three common models of random hetero-polymers, in which both the polymer density and the density of the polymer-solvent mixture are finite. These solvable models give valuable insight into the problems related to the (quenched) average over the randomness in statistical mechanical models of proteins, without having to deal with the hard geometrical constraints occurring in finite dimensional models. Our exact solution, which is specific to the $\infty$-dimensional case, is compared to the results obtained by a saddle-point analysis and by the grand ensemble approach, both of which canalso be applied to models of finite dimension. We find, somewhat surprisingly, that the saddle-point analysis can lead to qualitatively incorrect results., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures

A model of noise reduction (NR) for signal processing is introduced. Each noise source puts a symmetric constraint on the space of the signal vector within a tolerable overlap. When the number of noise sources increases, sequences of transitions take place, causing the solution space to vanish. We found that the transition from an extended solution space to a shrunk space is retarded because of the symmetry of the constraints, in contrast to the analogous problem of pattern storage. For low tolerance, the solution space vanishes by volume reduction, whereas for high tolerance, the vanishing becomes more and more like percolation. A lattice model of a hetero-polymer with random hydrophilic-hydrophobic charges interacting with the solvent is introduced, whose continnuum counterpart has been proposed by T. Garel, L. Leibler and H. Orland {J. Phys. II France 4, 2139 (1994)]. The transfer matrix technique is used to study various constrained annealed systems which approximate at various degrees of accuracy the original quenched model. For highly hydrophobic chains an ordinary $\theta$-point transition is found from a high temperature swollen phase to a low temperature compact phase. Depending on the type of constrained averages, at very low temperatures a swollen phase or a coexistence between compact and swollen phases are found. We propose a novel method for the determination of the effective interaction potential between the amino acids of a protein. The strategy is based on the combination of a new optimization procedure and a geometrical argument, which also uncovers the shortcomings of any optimization procedure. The strategy can be applied on any data set of native structures such as those available from the Protein Data Bank (PDB). In this work, however, we explain and test our approach on simple lattice models, where the true interactions are known a priori. Excellent agreement is obtained between the extracted and the true potentials even for modest numbers of protein structures in the PDB.
