In this book, the author pays tribute to Bernhard Riemann (1826-1866), a mathematician with revolutionary ideas, whose work on the theory of integration, the Fourier transform, the hypergeometric differential equation, etc. contributed immensely to mathematical physics. The text concentrates in particular on Riemann's only work on prime numbers, including ideas – new at the time – such as analytical continuation into the complex plane and the product formula for entire functions. A detailed analysis of the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function is presented. The impact of Riemann's ideas on regularizing infinite values in field theory is also emphasized. This revised and enhanced new edition contains three new chapters, two on the application of Riemann's zeta-function regularization to obtain the partition function of a Bose (Fermi) oscillator and one on the zeta-function regularization in quantum electrodynamics. Appendix A2 has been re-written to make the calculations more transparent. A summary of Euler-Riemann formulae completes the book.

Cal Elgot was a very serious and thoughtful researcher, who with great determi­ nation attempted to find basic explanations for certain mathematical phenomena­ as the selection of papers in this volume well illustrate. His approach was, for the most part, rather finitist and constructivist, and he was inevitably drawn to studies of the process of computation. It seems to me that his early work on decision problems relating automata and logic, starting with his thesis under Roger Lyndon and continuing with joint work with Biichi, Wright, Copi, Rutledge, Mezei, and then later with Rabin, set the stage for his attack on the theory of computation through the abstract treatment of the notion of a machine. This is also apparent in his joint work with A. Robinson reproduced here and in his joint papers with John Shepherdson. Of course in the light of subsequent work on decision problems by Biichi, Rabin, Shelah, and many, many others, the subject has been placed on a completely different plane from what it was when Elgot left the area. But I feel that his papers, results-and style-were very definitely influential at the time and may well have altered the course of the investigation of these problems. As Sammy Eilenberg explains, the next big influence on Elgot's thinking was category theory, which gave him a way of expressing his ideas in a sharply algebraic manner. The joint book with Eilenberg is one illustration of this influence.

This is the final volume of Heisenberg's Collected Works. It contains his papers on a (nonlinear) unified theory of elementary particles, as well as his contribution to superconductivity and multiparticle production. Especially interesting is the first group of papers, which is split intotwo sections dealing with, firstly, the formulation of the famous nonlinear spinor equation and, secondly,its applications. Among others the reader willfind a thorough discussion of Heisenberg's collaboration with W. Pauli on these matters. This second Series A volume of Werner Heisenberg's Collected Works covers a period of about 15 years beginning with the early papers on quantum field theory in 1929/30 and ending with those on the scattering matrix (up to 1946). The theory of nonlinear oscillations and stability of motion is a fundamental part of the study of numerous real world phenomena. These phenomena, particularly auto-oscillations of the first and second kind, capture, para­ metric, subharmonic and ultraharmonic resonance, asymptotic behavior and orbits'stability, constitute the core of problems treated in'Nonlinear Mechanics', and their study is connected with the names of H. Poincare, A. M. Lyapunov, N. M. Krylov and N. N. Bogolyubov. Professor Demetrios Magiros, a widely known scientist in the theories of oscillations and nonlinear differential equations, has devoted his numerous works to this significant part of modern physical science. His scientific results can be classified in the following way: I) creation of methods of analysis of subharmonic resonances under the nonlinear effect, 2) determination and analysis of the main modes of nonlinear oscillations on the basis of infinite determinants, 3) analysis of problems of celestial mechanics, 4) classification of stability of solutions of dynamic systems concepts, 5) mathematical analogs of physical and social systems. He has developed new methods and solutions for a great number of difficult problems of nonlinear mechanics making a significant contri­ bution to the theory and applications of the field. This open access book features a selection of articles written by Erich Ch. Wittmann between 1984 to 2019, which shows how the “design science conception” has been continuously developed over a number of decades. The articles not only describe this conception in general terms, but also demonstrate various substantial learning environments that serve as typical examples. In terms of teacher education, the book provides clear information on how to combine (well-understood) mathematics and methods courses to benefit of teachers. The role of mathematics in mathematics education is often explicitly and implicitly reduced to the delivery of subject matter that then has to be selected and made palpable for students using methods imported from psychology, sociology, educational research and related disciplines. While these fields have made significant contributions to mathematics education in recent decades, it cannot be ignored that mathematics itself, if well understood, provides essential knowledge for teaching mathematics beyond the pure delivery of subject matter. For this purpose, mathematics has to be conceived of as an organism that is deeply rooted in elementary operations of the human mind, which can be seamlessly developed to higher and higher levels so that the full richness of problems of various degrees of difficulty, and different means of representation, problem-solving strategies, and forms of proof can be used in ways that are appropriate for the respective level. This view of mathematics is essential for designing learning environments and curricula, for conducting empirical studies on truly mathematical processes and also for implementing the findings of mathematics education in teacher education, where it is crucial to take systemic constraints into account.

The book intends to be a collection of research papers on algebra and related topics, most of which were presented at the international'Workshop on Associative Rings and Algebras with additional structures (WARA22)'. The purpose of the workshop WARA22 was to present the current state of the art both in the Theory of Lie structures of associative rings and algebras and in the Theory of functional identities in rings. This volume comprises selected papers from the SIAM International Meshing Roundtable Workshop 2023, SIAM IMR 2023, held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, March 6-9, 2023. The IMR was started by Sandia National Laboratories in 1992 and, since 2021, it has been held under the umbrella of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). The SIAM IMR 2023 was the first in-situ conference to be held since 2019, after two online conferences. It consisted of short courses, technical presentations from keynotes, contributed talks and research notes, a poster session and meshing contest, and discussion panels. The papers in these proceedings present novel contributions that range from theoretical advances to technical applications in engineering, geometric modeling, computer graphics, visualization, and machine learning.

Herman Geuvers is a full professor at Radboud University Nijmegen and holds a part-time professorship at Eindhoven University of Technology. He received his PhD from Radboud University in 1993 and he was promoted to full professor in Computer Assisted Reasoning in 2006. Prof. Geuvers is an internationally renowned researcher in the field of proof assistants, logic in computer science, lambda calculus, and type theory. He has been a steering committee chair of the TYPES and FSCD conferences, chair of related EU Cost Action projects, and program chair or editor of related conferences and special issues in the area of computer science logic. He is a successful, generous and inspiring advisor and educator. He has been director of education and director of research of the Computer Science Institute at Radboud University Nijmegen, and he is currently chair of the examination board of computer science and chair of the board of the Institute for Programming Research and Algorithmics, a Dutch national inter-university research school. The contributions in this volume reflect Prof. Geuvers'main research interests.

John Corcoran was a very well-known logician who worked on several areas of logic. He produced decisive works giving a better understanding of two major figures in the history of logic, Aristotle and Boole. Corcoran had a close association with Alfred Tarski, a prominent 20th-century logician. This collaboration manifested in Corcoran's substantial introduction to Tarski's seminal book, Logic, Semantics, Metamathematics (1956). Additionally, Corcoran's posthumous editorial involvement in'What are logical notions?'(1986) breathed new life into this seminal paper authored by Tarski. His scholarly pursuits extended to the intricate explication of fundamental concepts in modern logic, including variables, propositions, truth, consequences, and categoricity. Corcoran's academic curiosity extended further to the intersection of ethics and logic, reflecting his contemplation of their interrelation. Beyond these theoretical contributions, Corcoran was deeply engaged in the pedagogical dimensions of logic instruction. In particular, the second part focuses on a problem that remained open until 1985, when Professor Robert John Aumann (Nobel laureate in Economics, 2005) and Professor Michael Maschler solved it using game-theoretic techniques. Simple alternative solutions are given, which are suitable for high schools and other educational institutions.

In this volume, I have collected several papers which were presented at the international conference called'Venice-2/Symposium on Applied and In­ dustrial Mathematics'. Such a conference was held in Venice, Italy, between June 11 and 16,1998, and was intended as the follow-up of the very successful similar event (called'Venice-1/Symposium on Applied and Industrial Math­ ematics'), that was also organized in Venice in October 1989. The Venice-1 conference ended up with a Kluwer volume like this one. I am grateful to Kluwer for having accepted to publish the present volume, the aim of which is to update somehow the state-of-the-art in the field of Ap­ plied Mathematics as well as in that of the nowadays rather more developed area of Industrial Mathematics. The most of the invited (key-note) speakers contributed to this volume with a paper related to their talk. There are, in addition·, a few significant contributed papers, selected on the basis of their quality and relevance to the present-time research activities. The topics considered in the conference range from rather general sub­ jects in applied and numerical analysis, to more specialized subjects such as polymers and disordered media, granular flow, semiconductor mathematics, superconductors, elasticity, tomography and other inverse problems, financial modeling, photographic sciences, etc. The papers collected in this volume provide a selection of them. It is clear from the previous list that some attention has been paid to relatively new and emerging fields.

Finsler's papers on set theory are presented, here for the first time in English translation, in three parts, and each is preceded by an introduction to the field written by the editors. In the philosophical part of his work Finsler develops his approach to the paradoxes, his attitude toward formalized theories and his defense of Platonism in mathematics. He insisted on the existence of a conceptual realm within mathematics that transcends formal systems. From the foundational point of view, Finsler's set theory contains a strengthened criterion for set identity and a coinductive specification of the universe of sets. The notion of the class of circle free sets introduced by Finsler is potentially a very fertile one although not very widespread today. Combinatorially, Finsler considers sets as generalized numbers to which one may apply arithmetical techniques. The introduction to this third section of the book extends Finsler's theory to non-well-founded sets. The present volume makes Finsler's papers on set theory accessible at long last to a wider group of mathematicians, philosophers and historians of science. A technical background is not necessary to appreciate the satisfying interplay of philosophical and mathematical ideas that characterizes this work.

Mathematical modelling and computer simulations are playing a crucial role in the solution of the complex problems arising in the field of biomedical sciences and provide a support to clinical and experimental practices in an interdisciplinary framework.Indeed, the development of mathematical models and efficient numerical simulation tools is of key importance when dealing with such applications.Moreover, since the parameters in biomedical models have peculiar scientific interpretations and their values are often unknown, accurate estimation techniques need to be developed for parameter identification against the measured data of observed phenomena. Every two years the members of GIRET (= Centre for International Re­ search on Economic Tendency Surveys) meet at conferences in order to promote the scientific discussion and to encourage the exchange of ideas. CIRET is an international study group for research in the field of business cycle surveys. CIRET was founded in 1960 and has at present about 350 full and corresponding members in 35 different coun­ tries. The members either carry out business, investment or consumer 1 surveys or are working on a practical or methodological level with the results of such surveys. The most important topics of the GIRET conferences are the predictive value of survey data as trade cycle indicators, the utilization of qualitative data in econometric models, forecasts of capital expenditures based on plans of private companies, the usefulness of consumer surveys for trade cycle analyses. In September 1977 the 13th CIRET Conference took place in Munich. On the occasion of the three-day conference 27 papers were presented.
